n apparent argument between three men on a Ridgewood street ended in gunfire on the afternoon of Oct. 31 when one of those involved pulled out a gun and shot his two foes, police said. According to authorities, the shooting occurred at about 5:43 p.m. on Oct. 31 in front of a home on Norman Street between Seneca and Cypress avenues. Law enforcement sources said the gunman, described as a male standing 6 feet tall, exited from a silver Hyundai parked on Norman Street and engaged in a dispute with the two victims, a 23-year-old male and a 29-year-old male. Seconds later, authorities said, the gunman opened fire, shooting the 23-year-old in the arm and the 29-year-old man in both legs. The suspect was observed entering a gold BMW that fled eastbound on Norman Street. The 23-year-old victim was taken by private means to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. After the 104th Precinct and EMS units arrived on scene, the 29-year-old victim was also taken to Wyckoff Hospital. Both men were listed in stable condition with injuries not considered life-threatening. The investigation is ongoing.

Man arrested for Maspeth BBQ joint shooting

his beef came with a side of bullets. A New Jersey man was arrested early Saturday morning for shooting a man during an apparent argument outside of a Maspeth barbecue joint over the weekend, authorities said. According to the criminal complaint provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, 30-year-old Carlos Suarez-Moytoya of Lodi, NJ, allegedly got into a verbal altercation — which quickly turned physical — with three individuals outside of the SLIDE Bar-B-Q restaurant, located at 52-75 65th Pl., between 3:20 and 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 29. Eyewitnesses told investigators that Suarez-Moytoya allegedly went to a vehicle parked outside the restaurant, reached inside and allegedly pulled out a silver revolver. The eyewitness then heard a gunshot and saw the 23-year-old male victim on the ground and in engaged in a struggle with Suarez-Moytoya, who then fled the location. Ramirez was brought to an area hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his abdomen, two fractured ribs and multiple contusions to his face and body, cops said. Su a rez-Moy toy a w a s arrested by officers of the 104th Precinct on charges of attempted murder, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon for the loaded firearm, and second degree assault. He was arraigned on Oct. 30 and bail was set at $500,000. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 11.

Ridgewood ready to celebrate landmark status of nearly a thousand historic homes BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT

ew street signs will soon point the way to Ridgewood‘s latest historic district. The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), which had unanimously approved landmark designation of central Ridgewood in December 2014, will officially unveil the signs marking the area as a historic district on Friday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. LPC Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan and LPC Foundation Chair Christina Davis will be joined by Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley and Ridgewood Property Owners and Civic Association (RPOCA) President Paul Kerzner, at the corner of 70th Avenue and Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood for the celebration. The Central Ridgewood Historic District covers 990 buildings which consist “mostly of brick row houses, and represents one of the most harmonious and architecturally distinguished enclaves of working class dwellings in New York City,” according to the LPC. Back in the 19th century, Ridgewood was mostly open farmland, but improved transportation contributed to the neighborhood’s evolution and

Most of the houses in the district were constructed between 1906 and World War I by German-Americans and German immigrants, the LPC said. The detailing of the buildings are mainly Renaissance Revival Style, mixed with other styles such as the Romanesque Revival and neo-Grec.
Streets within the new historic district include 69th Avenue, Madison Street, Catalpa Avenue and more. Roughly a third of the 2,982 Ridgewood buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places have received landmark status from the city. The RPOCA has campaigned for years to have all buildings on the register to be declared city landmarks.

en-hut! The Queens Veterans Day Parade Committee has announced the honorees for the 2016 march to be held on Nov. 6, in Middle Village. The 2016 honorees for the parade include Gold Star Mother Yolanda David, fallen Marine Corporal Julian Ramon, and World War II veterans Gary “Casper” Inzerillo from Howard Beach and Luke Gasparre from Astoria — both of whom will serve as grand marshals — and several other individuals who have served the country in different branches of the military.
Ramon, 22, of Flushing, died on July 20, 2006, while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The parade is scheduled to kick off at noon at 80th Street and Metropolitan Avenue, and will conclude with a special ceremony followed by refreshments at Christ the King Regional High School, located at 6802 Metropolitan Ave. As always, the marching members of the military will be joined on the parade route by civic groups and organizations, Boy and Girl Scout troops, local marching bands and baton twirlers,
local civic leaders, authentic military vehicles, along with classic cars from the East Coast Car Association. The committee is hoping this year’s parade will be the largest in Queens in over a decade. Residents from all across Queens are invited to attend the parade, and are asked to bring their flags and thank-you signs for a touching tribute to the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much — some making the ultimate sacrifice — to protect the US and our way of life at home and overseas. Any groups or organizations that would like to participate in this year’s parade can send an email to qvdpcomittee@gmail.com or call NY Guardsman Michael Bilski at 917-607-3961. The Queens Veterans Day Parade Committee is also looking for donations of any amount, which can be mailed or brought to Middle Village Veterans Day Parade Committee, C/O Salvatore Candela, 75-16 Metropolitan Ave., Middle Village, NY 11379. The nation observes Veterans Day on Nov. 11 each year to honor all those who served in defense of the country.

This Glendale bakery is rated one of the best businesses in North America BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GUIDICEREPORT
T
he owners of Mahalo New York Bakery have turned their small bakery in Glendale into a top-rated business on one of the internet’s most popular customer review sites, Yelp. Through hard work, dedication and community outreach, Sunita and Michael Shiwdin were able to garner a 4.5-star rating on Yelp, with rave reviews from customers who couldn’t get enough of their delicious desserts. Both Sunita and Michael make it a priority to engage with their customers on Yelp and in-store, listening to feedback — both positive and negative — and even asking for their opinions on new recipes. “Sue’s relationships that she makes with her customers, she always treats them like family,” Michael said. “Especially on Yelp I think people appreciate that. Whether if it’s a bad or good review, there is generally some sort of dialogue we try to have with the customer, whether it’s on Yelp or here in the store.

Michael and Sunita Shiwdin, owners of Mahalo New York Bakery. We also use that feedback to better our products or better our service.” A prime example of this community dialogue is that this is the first year that Mahalo is making pumpkin-flavored desserts, simply because they had an overwhelming number of requests for it. You can’t have a successful bakery without delicious food. Michael and Sunita also attribute some of their success and high Yelp reviews to the
desserts they serve. The bakery is known for having unique flavors that aren’t found at many places in the neighborhood, with some of their most popular items like Pineapple Guava Cupcakes, Hibiscus Cupcakes, Matcha with Blueberry Vegan Cupcake, Haupia Pie and Mango Passion Fruit Whipped Cheesecake. “I think bringing quality dessert at a decent price definitely plays a role in it,” Sunita said. “We do try to fit as much
tropical flavors into our desserts as possible, and I think that makes us stand out.” As part of being named to Yelp’s top 100 businesses, in November Michael and Sunita will be brought to Yelp’s headquarters in San Francisco, CA, for the company’s second annual business leader summit, Coast-To-Coast: Community Powered Progress! The Shiwdins are looking to make the most of this opportunity and learn as much as they can from the other businesses at the conference and bring that knowledge back to Glendale to better Mahalo, for themselves as small business owners, and for their customers. “It would be nice to get the feedback and experience from some of the businesses there that have multiple locations,” Michael said. “Should we continue at this pace and want to open up a second location we would want to know from them, what’s that process like, what are some things we should lookout for?” Mahalo New York Bakery is located at 66-40 Myrtle Ave. and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.

MASPETH SHELTER WAR
Stringer says locals must be involved in shelter planning BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT
W
ith local residents feeling ignored and disrespected by Mayor Bill de Blasio, his administration, and the local elected officials regarding a proposed homeless shelter in Maspeth, City Comptroller Scott Stringer visited the Juniper Park Civic Association in Middle Village on Thursday night to address their concerns about the plan. Stringer, one of many speculated challengers to de Blasio in next year’s mayoral election, sought to answer the questions of community members in order to open a dialogue with them and talk about long-term and lasting solutions to the city’s historic homelessness crisis, rather than just continue to put the homeless in hotel rooms. “I wanted to come here so you could see the face, the hands, the eyes, to speak to you, to talk to you and think about the issues that we face,” Stringer told the crowd. “Look, I will tell you this, I know homelessness is on everyone’s mind, this is a crisis. You may not know your apartment is rent-stabilized BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT
A
re Ridgewood-area landlords raking in tax breaks, while not listing their apartments as rent stabilized? A new analysis published by ProPublica shows that nearly two-thirds of over 6,000 rental properties across New York City are receiving tax benefits from the city’s 421-a program do not have approved applications on file, and most haven’t even registered the apartments for rent stabilization, as required by law. By not registering for rent stabilization, the owners can hike up rents as high as they like which leads to the gentrification of low-income neighborhoods, which has become a major problem in places like Ridgewood and the surrounding areas. The 421-a program was created to spur developers of new apartment buildings to build low-income housing by offering property tax breaks for registering and listing their rental units as rent stabilized, which limits rent increases by small amounts established by New York City. In order to take part in the 421-a program, developers must fill out an

Many owners have not registered their buildings in the 421-a program, but are reaping the tax benefits. application where they agree to register their apartments for rent stabilization. After the new rental units are built, city officials verify that they’ve registered for the program and issue a certificate of approval. Once they receive the certificate, it must be filed with the city’s Finance Department so the owner can begin getting the tax break. The ProPublica analysis shows that these procedures are not being followed. ProPublica estimates that together, these landlords have saved close to $300 million a year in property taxes without having to show that they’ve qualified for the 421-a tax break, or providing rent-stabilized units. According to ProPublica’s database*, in the greater Ridgewood area, Maspeth has the lowest number of rent-stabilized
buildings with 35 (14 without 421-a approval on file, while 21 were on file); Ridgewood has 46 rent-stabilized buildings (17 not on file, 29 on file); Middle Village has 61 rent-stabilized buildings (39 not on file, 22 on file); and Glendale has the most with 66 rent-stabilized buildings (42 not filed, 24 filed). Users can search the database for their specific address to see if the landlord has been approved for the 421-a program and registered the building for rent stabilization. If not, the tenant may be paying much more than they are supposed to. One way to make these landlords register their buildings, if eligible, is through enforcement. The Department of Housing, Preservation and Development and the Department of Finance have identified the
owners who do not adhere to the law and plan to notify them that they must comply or lose their benefits, ProPublica stated. According to ProPublica, Mayor Bill de Blasio has also proposed reforms that would require owners to meet all 421-a criteria before the tax benefits are handed out. *Approval data indicate whether the landlord has obtained an OK from the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development to receive a post-construction 421-a tax break and provided that approval to the city’s Finance Department to obtain it. In some cases, the housing agency may give its approval but the paperwork may be missing from Finance’s books. Status may change as lagging approvals get filed; the data shown here is current as of March 2016. To show landlords are abiding by the 421-a program’s rent stabilization requirement, they must register their buildings and apartments for rent stabilization with the state’s Division of Housing and Community Renewal. Buildings that began receiving benefits after 2014, the latest registration data available, would not have an obligation to register as of that year, while those that received benefits prior to 2014 would.

Help send Maspeth HS student to Africa for special project BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT
B
efore the students of Maspeth High School’s (MHS) International Club can make a difference across the world, they need your help getting there. Next summer, the boys and girls of the International club will be going on an 11-day mission to Tanzania in Africa to participate in the club’s first international service-learning project. During their mission they will be working side by side with locals to gain insight into the challenges they face and build lasting solutions to help empower the community. The cost for each student to travel to Africa is $4,930, which includes eight overnight stays, round-trip flights, daily meals, local transportation, a sustainable service project with Free the Children — including 20+ service hours — and a safari day. MHS is reaching out to the community to help defray the cost of sending one student to Tanzania for this life-changing experience. “Ms. Polson and I have been inspired to give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of a new country, but we wanted
more than that. We noticed that our students were feeling empathetic towards the less fortunate children we wanted them to have the opportunity to help,” said Nicole Evanisko, Maspeth International Adviser. “One of the best things about this trip is that we listen directly to what the people of Longido, Tanzania need at the time, and we do the best we can to work together to build lasting solutions to help empower their community. We may end up assisting with library construction, building and restoring a school, or helping to provide clean drinking water.” The mission of MHS’ International Club is to become better connected to the world. In the club, students learn about the culture and history of countries from across the globe and by participating in international travel, such as next summer’s trip to Africa, they have the ability become more confident, well-rounded young adults. Evanisko believes that through experiential learning, the students can gain new perspectives, develop important skills, and become true global citizens. “Tanzania is a country ridden with poverty and we want to be able to help in whatever way we can,” Evanisko said. “But anyone that has

FOUR MEN INDICTED IN QUEENS ON OVER 900 COUNTS OF GRAND LARCENY FOR ATM SCHEME Man snatches purse from 85-yearold woman on Forest Hills street Police need the public’s help in finding a purse snatcher who robbed an elderly woman in Forest Hills recently. On Oct. 23 at 6:45 p.m., the man approached an 85-year-old woman from behind near 72nd Road. He snatched her purse, whichcausedhertofalltotheground. The woman suffered from a laceration to her left ankle but refused medical treatment, police said. The theft was reported to the 112th Precinct. The individual is described as a white male who was last seen wearing a light-colored hat, black jeans and a light-colored coat.
They’ve got way more than 99 problems now. Four men have been indicted on 908 counts in an indictment announced Tuesday for their alleged roles in a scheme to steal identities through ATM skimmers placed at banks across the city. Brooklyn’s Ionut Gherasim, 29, Ionut Paraschiu, 31, Zsolt Dezsy, 37, and Robert Duczon, 37, were charged in the indictment with criminal possession of forgery devices, second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, second-degree unlawful possession of personal identification information and fifth-degree conspiracy.
www.qns.com
Compiled by Ridgewood Times Staff In footage obtained during the course of the investigation, according to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown, the defendants were allegedly seen tinkering with ATM devices. They either removed and replaced the top panel of the ATM, or manipulated the bottom part of the machine in order to install the skimmer. Skimmers read the magnetic strip on the back of credit and debit cards, which contains the personal and bank account information of the user. Thieves typically sell the information obtained by the skimmers to other fraudsters, or use the info to create fraudulent credit and debit cards to withdraw cash or complete transactions. Detectives executed a court-authorized search of Paraschiu’s home and recovered skimmers as well as false ATM panels with cameras angled to record victims entering their PIN and
numerous re-encoded cards from a number of financial institutions. Similar gadgets were allegedly thrown out of the window during a raid in the apartment of defendants Duczon, Dezsy and Gherasim, prosecutors said. After an additional search warrant was executed in their home, law enforcement allegedly recovered skimmers, false ATM panels, plastic cards and other objects. “For most people, ATMs are an access point to acquiring cash easily and quickly. But just as swiftly as one swipes their bank card, their account details can be stolen,” Brown said in a statement. “The four defendants in this case are accused of conspiring to steal the identity of ATM users by replacing whole ATM panels with pinhole cameras aimed to record customers inputting their PIN numbers and skimmers. This kind of stealth thievery will not be tolerated in Queens County.” If convicted, the defendants each face up to seven years in prison. Brown recommends that people who believe they may be victims of identity theft should contact credit reporting bureaus and their local police precinct, and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission or the United States Postal Service.

It’s your choice, make it a good one
W
e’re less than a week away from an election most people want to forget-- but the one thing you shouldn’t forget to do is to vote this Tuesday, Nov. 8. Election Day gives everyone the same power to dictate the course of their government’s future, whether
race at the top of the ballot. You should know, however, that there are a number of local legislative races downballot that are just as important to your state’s future, your community’s future, your future. Although our sister papers have offered their endorsements, the Ridgewood Times and Times Newsweekly have opted not to make any endorsements, continuing a time-honored tradition that began when this publication was launched in 1908. However, we would like to offer our readers some advice before they head to the polls on Election Day. We need to elect competent men and women into office who we can rely upon to do the right thing, who won’t look to instinct alone when deciding the fate of our city, our state, our republic. We should demand that our representatives are well-informed, level-headed, tolerant of difference and willing to compromise in order to get things done. In order to elect the right people to government, we need to make
it’s in Washington, D.C. or in the confines of the State Capitol in Albany. This is the most important opportunity you have to truly speak out on what you want your government to do in the choices you make at the ballot box. It’s easy to think of the entire election coming down to the presidential
well-informed decisions at the polls. That means tuning out the noisy pundits on the major network news networks and ignoring the memes in your Facebook or Twitter feeds. That means investing a few spare moments of your busy schedule to read up on the candidates looking to represent you in the halls of the State Capitol, on Capitol Hill and, yes, in the White House. Read your local and national newspapers, in print and online. Visit the candidates’ websites and see where they stand on the issues that matter to you. Try not to make a contest about one thing that you may hold dear; think of several things that are important and find out which candidate best suits your needs. We all take the time to research lesser matters such as where to vacation, where to shop, what car to lease or what brand of television or computer we should buy. We should make the same vigorous effort before heading to the polls. The choice is yours, Queens. Go vote on Tuesday, Nov. 8!

LETTERS AND COMMENTS DIVERSITY TRUMPS IGNORANCE IN QUEENS
I
t is ironic that with hard-won inclusiveness of the American dream Queens County has trumped Donald Trump in making the dream come true for a participatory sharing. Compassion and justice are the keynote to the creation of a community in which each individual can realize himself or herself not by brashly talking loudly but by the quiet voice of community. Donald Trump, will you listen? The miracle of Queens is contained in the harmonious life of its residents who have come here from the four corners of the Earth. They live a peaceful life here, in spirited celebration of their harmonious existence with their fellow travelers to this country. Most of these arrivals are the first or second generation of their families to this country. They share a common experience of life being expanded by the old world values that underlie the reason for their exodus and the enhancement of their entry. Together they represent a new America premised upon respect for the freedom of their individual lives at the same time as they are living as members of groups from all parts of the world who benefit from the American Dream. This dream provides the recognition of the success of our country in uniting the whole world within its borders and must serve as a guidepost to the world. It is the American vision that the entire world must pursue to create a state of being which provides to each individual respect for all other individuals. Sigmund R. Balka, Forest Hills
TIME TO REFORM HOUSING COURT The City Council is weighing legislation that would pay lawyers to represent indigent men, women and children threatened with eviction in housing court. It’s about time. But the major flaw with housing court is that it exists; it is a forum where society treats hapless tenants like criminals, and that won’t change if the Council’s bill becomes law. Rent disputes should be removed altogether from the court system. However, the problems confronting individuals trapped in housing court surpass their judicial travails.
As matters now stand, housing court is just one shameful element in a grotesque and devious phenomenon that I call Welfare World. I don’t have the space to discuss in detail my own experiences in Welfare World. Taxpayer money and charitable donations are being squandered on the current system; what is desperately needed is a new approach to those facing eviction and poverty. Howard Schneider, Rego Park
CITY SHOULD FOCUS ON THE REAL PROBLEMS Recently several members of our elected City Council proposed legislation that would ban the use of “wild and exotic animals” for shows (circuses, etc). In addition several members proposed to change the name of several NYCHA Facilities which were named after our founding fathers (Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, etc) since they were slave owners. Meanwhile the Administration for Children Services (ACS) often fails to protect innocent, defenseless children, sometimes the consequences are tragic, injury or worse ( death). In addition, the City has a homeless population of at least 60,000 according to published reports. The policies proposed by the de Blasio administration are being protested by middle class, hardworking homeowners in neighborhoods throughout the city including in Queens. When will these elected officials stop with their feel good activism and start addressing the real problems which exists? Thomas Murawski, Glendale

OP-ED
Our Schools, Our Voices BY PUBLIC ADVOCATE LETITIA JAMES
A
s parents, we should have a say in every aspect of our child’s life, especially the ones that will be most consequential. But far too often, I’ve found parents to be shut out of the decision-making process in their child’s school. For example, meetings in our city’s public schools where important policy and budget decisions are made have been strictly closed to the public, including parents. But there’s good news: thanks to a lawsuit I worked on along with courageous education advocates, parents will once again be welcomed to share input on how our schools are run. Every New York City public school is required to have a School Leadership Team (SLT), which includes the principal, parent association president, teachers union representative, and an elected parent and staff member. The point of an SLT is to create roadmaps for the school’s annual goals, which are required to be reflected in the school budget. The teams are also consulted for new hires and new policies. Since the establishment of mayoral control in 2002, SLT meetings have been closed to the public, robbing parents and community members of an opportunity to engage with school governance, denying them a voice in decisions that directly impact their children. Behind closed doors, SLTs decide the future of our schools. They decide where the school’s budget will be spent. They decide where to allocate that money, whether it be to books, computers or class trips. They decide how our classroom spaces will be improved and how suspensions policies will be changed,
and even discuss the potential for co-locations and school closings. Parents and teachers have a right to participate in this process, so when a former teacher was barred from attending an SLT meeting at his former school, I went to the Department of Education (DOE) to advocate for his right to attend. But instead of working together, the DOE pushed back against increased transparency and instead engaged in a lengthy legal battle. Just last week, the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled unanimously in favor of our lawsuit against the administration, concluding that the DOE must make School Leadership Team meetings open to the public. Our schools should be like parks with open fields and boundless room for ideas and knowledge, not dark dungeons with concrete walls that keep people out. By not allowing community members to participate, DOE created a veiled practice that cast a shadow of secrecy and opaqueness. Our success in opening up the SLT process is not only a victory for parents, students and educators, but for all New Yorkers who believe in a transparent and accountable government. As public advocate for the City of New York, Letitia James is the second-highest ranking official in the city and serves as a watchdog over city agencies, and investigates complaints about city services.

CAMPAIGN 2016
Queens voters will get their say on Election Day
BY ROBERT POZARYCKI RPOZARYCKI@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @ROBBPOZ
E
veryone’s talking about the presidential race as Election Day nears, but Queens voters will have to also decide this Tuesday, Nov. 8, who they want to represent them on Capitol Hill and in the state Legislature. All seats in the House of Representatives, the state Assembly and the state Senate are up for grabs this Tuesday; New Yorkers will also elect a U.S. Senator, as incumbent Democratic Senator Charles Schumer is being challenged by Republican nominee Wendy Long. Polls will be open on Nov. 8 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; for more information on where to vote, visit www.voting.nyc. Here’s a rundown of the legislative contests in the Ridgewood Times’ coverage area:
CONGRESS
Sixth Congressional District: Congresswoman Grace Meng is seeking
her third term on Capitol Hill; the Democrat is being challenged by Republican Danniel Maio, a cartographer from Forest Hills. The Sixth District covers much of Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village and extends into eastern Queens. Seventh Congressional District: Southern areas of Ridgewood and Glendale are part of the Seventh District that extends into Brooklyn and Manhattan. Democratic Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, who has held the seat since 1992, is facing Republican nominee Allan E. Romaguera, banker and businessman from Brooklyn.
STATE SENATE
12th Senatorial District: State Senator Michael Gianaris, the Democratic incumbent, is facing a challenge from Republican veterans advocate Marvin Jeffcoat of Woodside for the right to represent the 12th District encompassing much of western Queens, including areas of Ridgewood and Glendale
near the Brooklyn/Queens border. 15th Senatorial District: State Senator Joe Addabbo, the Democratic incumbent, is seeking a fifth term in office against Republican challenger Michael Conigliaro of Rego Park. Woodhaven, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Howard Beach, Broad Channel and the western Rockaways are all neighborhoods within the 15th District. 16th Senatorial District: Seeking her ninth full term in Albany, Democratic state Senator Toby Ann Stavisky is squaring off against Republican District Leader Carlos Giron of Woodside. The 16th District stretches out across central and eastern Queens and includes slivers of Maspeth, Middle Village, Rego Park and Woodside.
ASSEMBLY
30th Assembly District: Democratic attorney Brian Barnwell of Woodside and Republican businessman Tony Nunziato of Maspeth are squaring off for the right to succeed
the outgoing Assemblywoman Margaret Markey as representative of the 30th District, which covers much of Astoria, Long Island City, Maspeth, Middle Village, Sunnyside and Woodside. Barnwell defeated Markey in the September Democratic primary. 38th Assembly District: Democratic Assemblyman Mike Miller is seeking his fourth full term in office against Republican Joseph Maldonado, a retired Sanitation Department supervisor from Ozone Park. The 38th District includes Woodhaven and much of Ozone Park and Richmond Hill. Two local Assembly members are running unopposed: Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi of the 28th District (parts of Forest Hills, Glendale, Kew Gardens, Maspeth, Middle Village, Rego Park, Richmond Hill and Ridgewood) and Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan of the 37th District (areas of Astoria, Long Island City, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ridgewood, Sunnyside and Woodside).

CAMPAIGN 2016
Here’s how to exercise your right to vote free of worry BY ROBERT POZARYCKI RPOZARYCKI@QNS.COM/@ROBBPOZ
D
on’t listen to a particular presidential candidate’s claims about the election being “rigged.” Queens voters have the right to vote free of intimidation, and they can be assured that their votes will indeed count. This election will be the first for a whole generation of people, while for others, it may be the first time in years that they’ve gone to a polling place to vote. Even so, here’s what you need to know when heading to vote on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8.
WHERE AND WHEN DO I VOTE?
All polling places are open in Queens from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day. You may only cast your ballot at your designated polling site. The Board of Elections mailed out reminders to registered voters, but if you are unsure of where you can vote, you can find your local poll site on the board’s website or by calling 866-VOTE-NYC. You can also email your adress to vote@boe.nyc.ny.us, and the board will email your polling
place location (write the name of your borough in the subject line). If you are going to be out of town on Election Day, you can cast an absentee ballot at the Board of Elections office anytime on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Election Day. The office will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6, to accept absentee ballots. The Queens Board of Elections office is located at 118-35 Queens Blvd. in Forest Hills. Almost all of the Queens polling sites are ADA-accessible locations. If for any reason your polling site is inaccessible, call the Queens Board of Elections office at 718-730-6730.
WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET THERE?
When you arrive at your polling place, you should go the Election District numbered on your voter registration card. If you don’t know your Election District, ask the election officials on site; they are usually seated near the entrance and have a log book to help you find your Election District (be sure to bring your identification with you). Head over to the officials at your Election District table and tell
them your name. They will look it up in their listing of registered voters. Once they find you, sign in and a poll worker will provide you with a voter card, a ballot and a privacy sleeve. They will then direct you to a privacy booth or a ballot marking device where you can cast your vote. The paper ballots are double-sided. Read the directions and, with the pen provided at the booth, fill in the circles of the candidates of your choice. Seek assistance if you have a difficult time reading the ballot, if you do not speak English and require an interpreter or if you have any questions regarding how to vote. Once completed, place the paper ballot in the privacy sleeve, then head over to the scanning booths. A poll worker will take your voter card, but you will need to place your ballot in the scanner. Once the scanner confirms that it has received and counted your vote, you can go. If, for whatever reason, the scanners do not work at the time you vote, you can place the ballot in a secure, emergency box located within the scanner; these ballots will be scanned later by election officials. All ballots will be counted.

WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS AS A VOTER?
As a registered voter, you are entitled to cast a secret ballot, free from coercion or intimidation by election officials or any other person at or near the polling place. There are Democratic and Republican election officials at every polling place to ensure the election is conducted with integrity; there are also police officers on duty to keep things safe. Electioneering near polling sites is illegal; if you see people electioneering, or if you are approached and/or harassed by someone about voting, alert the election officials and police immediately. Don’t let anyone dissuade you from exercising your right to vote as you please! Because this is a federal election, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District will accept complaints about possible violations of federal election law. To file a complaint, call 718-254-6323 or call the FBI’s New York Office at 718-384-1000. If you go to vote and learn that your name is not on the registered voter roll, you have the right to request and cast an affidavit ballot. The ballots will be collected and counted later upon further review.

HALLOWEEN 2016
Halloween parades through Glendale and Maspeth were real treats BY THE RIDGEWOOD TIMES STAFF EDITORIAL@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM/@ RIDGEWOODTIMES
F
rom the looks of things, everyone had thrills and chills enjoying at parades through Maspeth and Glendale on Halloween night. The ghosts and ghouls were out in force in Glendale on Halloween night for the annual Glendale Halloween Parade hosted by the Glendale Kiwanis Club. The parade kicked off at 7 p.m. in front of the Stop and Shop located
at 64-65 Myrtle Ave., and everyone marched their way down to St. Pancras School for a spooky costume contest. Participants — which included people and their four-legged friends — were dressed up as superheroes, storm troopers, Pokemon, and much more. More of the same could be found in Maspeth during the annual Ragamuffin Parade hosted by the Maspeth Lions Club. Trick-or-treaters of all ages marched along Grand Avenue from Mount Olivet Cemetery to Maspeth Federal Savings Bank at 69th Street.

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: THE WAY IT WAS
A snapshot of Woodhaven’s rich history Presented By The Woodhaven Cultural And Historical Society
T
he residents of Woodhaven are very fortunate to have so much of its history still preserved and visible. To walk through the streets of Woodhaven is to walk through history, if you know where to look. Helping you know what to look for will be the goal of a presentation given by the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society this Sunday, Nov. 6, starting at 2:30 p.m. at the home of the Queens Historical Society at 143-35 37th Ave. in Flushing. Perhaps the oldest remnant of the very earliest days of Woodhaven is a plot of land approximately 80 feet wide and 270 feet long containing the remains of the area’s Dutch settlers. The Wyckoff-Snediker Family Cemetery on 96th Street and 86th Avenue is nestled between All Saints Episcopal Church and the backyards of neighboring homes. Some of the earliest markers go back to the 1700s and many of the names are known to those who are familiar with local history, and some of them were immortalized in the street names around us. One landmark well over 100 years old with an interesting history is technically not in Woodhaven anymore. The clocktower of the old LaLance-Grosjean factory was built after the great fire of February 1876 destroyed the original building. As legend has it, the original fire swept through the factory and rapidly destroyed everything except for the tall wooden clocktower which remained
standing until approximately 2 a.m. Then, with nearly the entire community watching, it collapsed in a spectacular fireball which many saw as the final sign that Woodhaven was finished. Florian Grosjean, the owner of the factory, may have felt the same way when he arrived at the scene of destruction the next morning. As most of the residents of the small village of Woodhaven worked at the factory, the fire put nearly everyone out of work and a mass evacuation was underway. But Mr. Grosjean acted quickly and kept his workers on half-salary, and hired many of them full-time to help rebuild. By August, a new and improved complex was opened with a taller, modern, brick clocktower that could be seen for miles. Today, the borders have been altered so that the site of the factory now sits in Ozone Park, and most of the complex is gone, torn down to make way for a supermarket. But the clocktower remains, standing tall over the communities it once served, telling the story of a group of people long ago who refused to give up in the face of adversity. Another local landmark well over a century old is actually fast approaching two centuries: Neir’s Tavern on 78th Street and 88th Avenue opened in 1829 and sat outside the main entrance of the Union Course Racetrack and has been serving up suds to locals ever since. The Union Course was the largest track in the United States, running

Dealing with grief during the holidays Seek Balance at This Hectic Time: Holidays are a time of parties and pressures, of frenzied schedules and frazzled nerves. Make time for exercise — a great pick-me-up. Go easy on alcoholic beverages. Eat nourishing, light meals. Avoid Over-Doing It: Feelings of loss will probably leave you fatigued. Respect what your body and mind are telling you. Lower your expectations for now. Don’t feel obligated to do all the cleaning, baking and decorating you might have done in the past. Set limitations. Do What is Right For You During the Holidays: Well-meaning friends and family often try to prescribe what is good for you during the holidays. Instead of going along with their plans, focus on what you personally want to do. If you feel that the upcoming holiday season will be very difficult for you to manage emotionally, ask your family funeral director for the name of a local bereavement counselor who can help you. Remember the words of Helen Keller, “What we have once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”

T
he holiday season can be overwhelming for those who have recently lost a loved one or for those who are still experiencing grief from an earlier loss. Demands on our time and energy to have a perfect holiday “just like it used to be” are unrealistic and unhealthy for everyone and especially so for the bereaved. New York State’s largest hospice program, the Community Hospice, has shared suggestions to help the bereaved cope with the emotional demands of the season: Celebrate Life: In this season of peace and joy, acknowledge that life is worth living. Treasure the Old and Welcome the New: Every holiday is filled with expectations, memories of holidays past, as well as people we have loved who may no longer be in our lives. Treasure your memories but allow this holiday season to evolve, with its own special surprises and cherished moments. Take Care of Yourself: Consider what supportive and caring things you can do for yourself this holiday season. Find those people who encourage you to be yourself and accept your feelings - both happy and sad.
A longtime resident of Ridgewood, Queens, died September 30th In Tucson Arizona at the age of 86. She was the wife of John Kropf and loving mother Of Manfred Kropf, Hilda DeNigris and Valentine Buchner. She is survived by two grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was kind, a loving parent and had a great sense of humor to the last.

How many billionaires would it take to buy Queens? BY ANGELA MATUA AMATUA@QNS.COM @ANGELAMATUA
R
eal estate search engine PropertyShark answered an interesting question in their latest study: How many billionaires would it take to purchase each borough? To answer the question, researchers poured over Forbes’ World Billionaires List. They also multiplied the total number of residential units in a neighborhood (single- and two-family houses, condo and coop units) by the average sale price recorded in that neighborhood for the third quarter of 2016, resulting in an approximate value for said neighborhood. The study focused on Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Queens was the cheapest of the three and the top three billionaires could purchase the entire borough for $192.5 billion. Who are the world’s top
three billionaires? Bill Gates, Amancio Ortega and Warren Buffet. Gates, the founder of Microsoft, has a net worth of $75 billion, according to Forbes. Ortega, the founder of clothing company Zara, is a new addition on the list and is worth $67 billion. He
knocked off Mexico’s Carlos Slim, who owns global conglomerate company Grupo Carso. Buffet, who is worth $60.8 billion, is the founder of conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway. The world’s top six billionaires could purchase Brooklyn for $245
billion and it would take the top 12 billionaires to put down approximately $578 billion to purchase Manhattan. Photos courtesy of Wikimedia Commons/Sebastian Derungs and USA International Trade Administration Courtesy of PropertyShark

ith the basketball season upon us, the Maspeth High School (MHS) teams are looking to get back to the championship game this year, but they need your help to do so. The MHS Argonauts basketball teams are looking for donations from the community to get gear for the upcoming season, to help pay tournament fees, a team project adventure trip to help build player-to-player relationships and teamwork, and more, said MHS boys varsity basketball head coach Anastasia Bitis said. “The last thing we are trying to get is a shooting machine this year,” Bitis said. “Having a shooting machine will help us with form and continuity in our shooting. We will be able to set goals for our guys which will motivate them to work harder to see the results that they want.” Last season, the boys varsity team suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Elite Eight round of a tournament where they lost a nail-biter in overtime. “This season we are determined to get back to the championship game,” Bitis said. “We learned a lot from our playoff run this year and the guys are motivated by those end-of-season emotions that they felt last year.” The Argonauts’ season kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 22, with a non-league game against Aviation High School at 4:30 p.m. at home. The players will be dedicating that game to Ryan Halligan — a student who killed himself in 2003 after being bullied in real life and online — and his family to raise awareness for bullying. To help the MHS basketball team this year, visit their donation page on GoFundMe.

Gottschee teams enjoy big weekend in Queens
BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT
I
t was a busy few weeks for the Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG) teams. On Oct. 30, as part of the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) league, the younger BWG teams traveled to meet their rival, Met Oval, at the Metropolitan Oval soccer field in Maspeth. It started with early games played by the 2007 teams. In the first game, the teams tied each other 5-5, while Blue Weiss Gottschee won the second game 5-4. After, the 2006 teams took the field, Met Oval won both of the games with a very entertaining first game 4-3. Lastly,
the 2005 groups took the field, and BWG won both of those games. On the Academy side, the 2002 Academy team traveled to North Carolina for the USSF Academy Showcase. The team played three games in three days, winning the first two and playing to a draw in the final contest. BWG 14s defeated the Triangle Futbol Club 3-0; BWG 14s beat Richmond United 2-0; and BWG 14s tied with Boca United 1-1. Also, the BWG U12 girls team won their second State Cup game against Washingtonville by the score of 4-2. Mila Sadeghi scored two goals, while Monica Lopez and Eva Gonzalez each scored one.
