Granger to address Parliament on maritime decree

P

resident David Granger will address the National Assembly on the controversial May 26th maritime decree by Venezuela which has rocked relations with Guyana.

Caracas issued a new decree on July 6 which may help to ease tensions.

Following its May 26th decree which sought to appropriate most of Guyana’s Atlantic waters and to have this enforced by the Venezuelan navy, Caracas has been stung by a diplomatic offensive mounted by Georgetown which has seen strong support from the Commonwealth for this country’s territorial integrity and a statement from Caricom on Sunday calling for a withdrawal of parts of the decree.

In the aftermath of the Caricom summit from July2-4 which was dominated by the decree, there had been intimations that Venezuela was prepared to take steps to limit the uproar from the maritime escapade which had also angered Colombia to the west and Suriname to the east. This appeared to have found form in the July 6th decree which has since been welcomed

by Colombia. The July 6th decree is now stripped of detailed co-ordinates which had been present in the May 26th version. Importantly, in the maritime area pertaining to Guyana’s Atlantic waters: the Zones of Maritime and Island Integral Defence (Zodimain), the new decree says that the Zodimain pertains to borders “that are to be

determined between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Republic of Guyana according with the Geneva Agreement of the year 1966”. This had not been contained in the May 26th decree. The Geneva Agreement is the foundation for settling the border controversy between the two countries and would therefore move the discussion back to this track as opposed to being seen as a new claim on Guyana’s territory.

The new decree also deleted a reference to the mouth of the Essequibo River.

ne gambler's luck vanished when a crook snatched a wad of cash from his hand and disappeared at the Resorts World Casino in Queens, police said on Tuesday.

The 54-year-old victim was sitting at an electronic table game when the suspect slinked up behind him, grabbed about $2,000 in cash and took off running from the casino floor on July 2 around 11:30 p.m., authorities said.

Security cameras caught the thief hurdling down staircases as he made his getaway.

Police described the suspect as a light skinned man, 20- to 25-years-old with a thin build.

July 10 – 16, 2015 Granger to address from pg. 3 Nations and that Guyana would now move for a juridical settlement. This sentiment was conveyed by President Granger to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon when the two met on the sidelines of the Caricom summit in Barbados last week.

On Monday, the same day on which the new decree was issued, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro addressed the country’s legislature and announced that Caracas’ envoy here was being recalled for consultations and relations with Guyana would be reviewed. He had also accused Granger of unacceptable language against Venezuela. The belligerent tone in the legislature appeared to be cover for the issuing of the new decree.

Venezuela’s May 26th decree came days after US oil giant ExxonMobil confirmed a possible large oil deposit in Guyana’s waters. These waters were encompassed by the May 26th decree and had never been the subject of any prior claim by Venezuela. Analysts noted that Venezuela is firmly set against Guyana tapping its petroleum potential and has interfered in this area for decades. Speaking to reporters at his weekly post-cabinet meeting yesterday, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said that the issue was discussed at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting and the President informed of his intention to address the nation. The President will also inform the nation of Guyana’s response to the issue locally and internationally and to the statements made by Maduro.

Caribbean Star Newspaper Georgetown has said that the Decree of May 26 was a “baseless and shameless” bid to usurp Guyana’s territory and a “flagrant violation” of international law.

In his inaugural address to Caricom Heads at the summit Granger had underlined the threat that the maritime decree posed to the rest of the region and had accused Venezuela of aggression against Guyana.

“We have already demonstrated the capacity to collaborate to confront some of the most challenging transnational threats.

These threats have demanded that we increasingly seek regional rather than purely national responses. They form the basis of regional cooperation. Transnational threats, formidable as they are, pale in significance to a much more portentous threat – the threat to our territory, the very land and sea space on which we rely for our everyday existence.

“Our exclusive economic zones are integral to our national territory. They are essential to our survival because we depend on these waters for our economic sustenance — travel, trade, tourism, fishing and petroleum exploitation.

“Our exclusive economic zones are rich in resources. These zones represent potentially lucrative economic frontiers. Many of the exclusive economic zones of our member states are interlocked. More importantly, some have not been demarcated. This absence of maritime demarcation represents a possible source of conflict within the Community. It can also be exploited from forces external to the Community”, he said in a

clear reference to Caracas.

He said that the region’s maritime zones are of economic and strategic importance.

“These waters are our common patrimony; they are ours to possess, ours to protect, ours to bequeath to posterity. We must remove any potential sources of conflict among our member states by ensuring the process of maritime delimitation in accordance with the international Law of the Sea. “We must be prepared also to exercise absolute sovereignty over our maritime waters and resources. We must protect these resources from being invaded and annexed.

We must pursue the principle of collective security which provides that a threat to any of our members represents a threat to our entire community”, Granger said.

“Guyana faces such a threat. Decree No 1787, promulgated by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, was timed to coincide with Guyana’s Independence Day on 26th May and the actual day of my inauguration as President of my country. The Decree lays claim to much of the coastline and most of the exclusive economic zone of Guyana.

This Decree has dire implications for the entire Region but most particularly, the eastern tier of states – Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

“We consider the issuance of the Decree

by Venezuela as an act of aggression against Guyana’s sovereignty. It is an assault on our right to access and to develop our maritime resources. We ask this Conference to affirm its solidarity with Guyana to repudiate this Decree”, he urged.

DEATHS UNDER QUERY Children’s Life Fund investigation: Doctor raised concern after 2 children died post surgery at Colombia hospital

ONCERNS were raised by local doctors about one of the Colombian medical institutions sanctioned by the Children’s Life Fund Authority (CLFA) where sick children would be sent for urgent medical treatment.

The concerns surfaced this year following the deaths of at least two local children at the ­Colombian ­facility Fundacion Clinica Shaio in Bogota.

In a confidential letter the Express obtained, dated February 18, 2015, Dr Camille Greene, a paediatric consultant at the cardiology clinic at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, wrote to Dr Vindra Singh, clinical head of the Department of Paediatric Medicine, expressing concerns about the competency and capability of the doctors based there.

In the case of six-year-old Shania Hernandez, Greene indicated Shania was well-known to the medical team at Wolfson, Jacksonville, Florida, USA (where her

However, Shania’s mother said personnel at the Life Fund said they were having issues with the US hospital and despite her ­protests, her daughter was sent to Fundacion Clinica Shaio in ­Colombia.

Dead two days after surgery In her letter, Greene indicated Shania went for surgery on

January 20, 2015. And she noted: “During the surgery the right atrium was cut during the sternotomy. She bled for 15 minutes before being started on cardiopulmonary bypass. She required multiple blood products and had organ failure as a result.

“She died two days after surgery. One must query the skill of the team at this hospital as adhesions secondary to previous cardiac surgery should have been anticipated.”

Shania’s mother believes the accidental cut to her daughter’s heart proved her undoing.

“They did not do a proper pro-

cedure. I think that is the reason she died. That cut, I think that is why she died,” the grieving mother said, choking back tears.

Adverse outcomes not uncommon Interim chairman of the CLFA Dr Colin Furlonge first justified the reason for sending Shania to Colombia.

“We have sent it (medical reports) to paediatric surgeons abroad in the States, paediatric cardiologists. We have gotten reports from them. On the basis of those reports we have referred the case to the ministry in Colombia, which is the proper step.

There are patients who have adverse outcomes in hospitals all over the world,” said Furlonge in an interview last Friday.

Furlonge admitted an investigation had been ordered and said he had told officials there they needed to sort their hospital out, although he still praised the hospital for its service and excellent

clinical outcomes.

“I have personally spoken to their competency within their Ministry of Health. We have asked, sent all files, all the notes for an investigation. I have had a conversation with them two weeks ago. They are going to get a report and that report is expected by the eighth of July (yesterday).

Depending on that report and further discussions they would then refer that to the National Ethics Tribunal. They will then make a decision on what action to take pending on what they find,” Furlonge said.

Death four days after surgery In her letter, Greene also expressed concern over the death of another child—Sarai Reyes— who needed heart surgery. She died at four months old.

“Being a Parent” by Devi Heeralall Jai Sita Ram, I am a blessed parent of the Naujaavan Mandalee Youth Group, and a proud member of the Shaanti Bhavan Mandir. Today I would like to share my view on the topic of being a parent. The title of “parents” has lost a lot of its morals and meaning in today’s society.

T

hese days’ people think that being a parent is just providing food and shelter, which is true to some extent, but more so the first essential of good parenthood is the acceptance of the role. The world of affection which should surround a child should precede its birth. It is here that good parenthood begins. Being a good parent is in itself a process of growing up. One should have the capacity to love and to love wisely: it is this kind of person who makes a good parent. Share yourself with your children and they will love you and learn from you. We as parents must understand that our society has undergo many changes that affect our everyday lives, and two of the biggest being technology and character.

Technology is a blessing to have, however we often use it for the wrong things and the wrong reasons. For example, cyber bulling, hacking, and criminal activities are some of the wrong uses of technology. The worst effect in my opinion is children are using more technology now than they have ever used in the past. All of the negative effects that social media and television is having on adults are far greater when it comes to the developing minds of children. There is no way to know what long term effect technology will have on our children because this is the first generation to have unlimited access. So as parents we have to limit our children’s access to technology.

Character plays a pivotal role in one’s life, and with the liberation that has taken place over time, gives children opportunity to go astray. Most people want children to learn to have good character. Parents especially want their children to have positive character, so they will grow up to become successful, good people. Often they become disturbed when their children as teenagers act lazy and irresponsible, but they hope their children will grow out of that

phase. In many cases, parents will teach their children what is the correct behavior to have in many situations. Most of the time, the children learn by example. Unfortunately, children with abusive parents are taught that physical violence is the way to solve problems. So as parents we have to lead by examples.

In addition, with everything that mankind has gone through to be here, we should have learned many life lessons.

For example, GhandiJi was a man who moved a nation all fueled by his vision of non violence. How does any of this go back to being a parent? Well, simple - being a parent includes building and teaching your kids the right morals of life. Anyone can provide for a child, but a devoted parent provides and teaches a child that life is a journey, and being on the right path starts with having a good character, and having that power to know right from wrong when the opportunity presents itself. Our kids are the future, we hear that day in and day out, yet we don’t take the proper actions. Our kids can easily be manipulated in the arms of people with wrong intentions. Parents have the responsibility of cultivating qualities in their children which may help them to face life, make them brave and likeable human beings, and impart to them a sense of integrity and strength. Parenthood is a full-time task and the only way of cultivating the right habits in children is by providing an atmosphere which is conducive to the growth of these qualities. A child learns these virtues at home and the influence of his parents can counteract all other influences whether good or bad.

The world of obligations and work is 100% understandable, we have bills and deadlines to meet as working parents.

However, we have to use our resources to our advantage. There are millions of after school programs and clubs you can enroll your kids in. Not only will you know where and what your kids are

doing, you will know they are in a safe environment of an adult with the same intentions to build your child to be the best he/she can. We need to take charge as parents, not just think that our kids being locked in their room means they are studying and the house is at peace.

Break down the door if you have to and spend time with your children. Once they feel the love of their parents, they will be shaped into successful young men and women. I say that strongly, because yes some kids still end up going off track. However, I know with all my heart as a mother of five that we all have the power to steer our kids on the right track and bring them back if needed.

One recipe for good parenthood is love and understanding. These two envelop a whole world in themselves. Love means love in the right degree, love which does not ignore discipline, love which does not yield for the wrong reasons and for the wrong ends, love which can provide security and confidence for the growing child, and love which leads to sacrifices. Understanding means, including patience and self-control. There may be occasions when a child may be afraid of things: of participation in social and public functions, so understanding is another way of trying to find out the

reasons for the fear and perhaps giving in for the time being and helping the child to overcome it gradually.

In conclusion, overall being a parent is a 24/7 honor. I say honor because we are raising children that will lead the generation into the future. Once they are born and start to understand the little virtues of life, we have to take charge. Let’s go beyond just providing for them, and instill that knowledge that will carry on for generations. Kids will not say “Mom and dad I need help”, instead they will distant themselves from people, lock themselves in their rooms, do badly in school etc. We have to take these as wake up calls and do something about it, at the same time we will grow closer to our kids. We will understand who they are and learn to communicate.

There should be a balance of love, understanding and obligations. Let your child know the rules, but at the same time make sure they know you are always there for them. Our kids are the future, but we have to be right by their side mentally, physically and morally.

A good mind brings the right intentions and actions. With the proper actions comes a well-rounded child, and a proper child reflects the honor of what it truly means to be a parent. Jai Ho!

Caribbean Star Newspaper Court clears way for Jagdeo re-election bid GRA further amends Customs import policy -says term-limit unconstitutional

cting Chief Justice Ian Chang ruled that the presidential term limit is unconstitutional, clearing the way for former president Bharrat Jagdeo to make another run for the presidency.

The judgment, which was handed down in chambers in the High Court, was made on a petition brought by a citizen, Cedric Richardson, who had contended that amendments to the constitution to allow for re-election only once restricted the voters’ choice of candidates and such a restriction could only be effected through a referendum.

The term limit was put in place by virtue of Act No. 17 of 2001, which added two clauses to the 1980 constitution to allow for re-election only once. Clause 2 of Article 90 of the Constitution states, “A person elected as President after the year 2000 is eligible for re-election only once,” and Clause 3 states, “A person who acceded to the Presidency after the year 2000 and served therein on a single occasion for not less than such period as may be determined by the National Assembly is eligible for election as President only once.”

Richardson’s challenge was initiated in February, just three months before Guyanese headed to the polls on May 11 and its timing raised questions about his motives.

The 50-year-old West Ruimveldt resident, was represented by attorney Shaun Allicock, who previously described his client as a Guyanese who felt that his constitutional rights have been affected by the amendments.

Jagdeo, who was elected in 2001 and 2006, has repeatedly maintained that he is not interested in a third term.

Although feelers have been put out to gauge public support for a re-election bid in spite of the restriction, he has distanced himself from these efforts.

ffective July 20, importers and licensed Customhouse Brokers will be required to submit a third (3rd) copy of their Customs declarations (otherwise known as Form C 72) documents to the Guyana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Customs Lodging Area, a release from the GRA said today.

Copies of the accompanying Bill of Lading and/or commercial invoices where necessary will also be required. The GRA said that in cases where there are tax exemptions, a tax exemption copy in the form of a C72 should be prepared, showing revenue loss as a result of the tax exemptions granted.

The GRA said that importers and licensed Customhouse Brokers can be assured that these amendments will in no way impact negatively on them or cause undue delays to the processing time for import declarations lodged.

The GRA reminded that in the past Customs declaration documents had to be submitted in quadruplicate. However, the paperwork requirements were shortened as management sought to expedite processing time.

In wake of the new impending changes, the GRA said that plans are being drawn up to reorient current staff of the GRA, especially at the Entry Processing Unit and Customshouse brokers, particularly new recruits about the procedures involved in preparing and lodging customs declarations and the relevant documents.

Greene, in her letter, continued: “The problem in this case is not primarily subvalvar obstruction but obstruction at the pulmonary valve itself (pulmonary atresia).This child will only benefit from a shunt bypassing the atretic pulmonary artery.”

And she further stated: “So this child is now in our care and requires intervention again. This procedure was in effect unnecessary and incomplete.”

Audit recommended Greene’s letter ended: “These patients were discussed with Dr Torres and we are of the opinion that we have to raise awareness

about the quality of care at Fundacion Clinic Shaio in Colombia.

We are hoping you can address our concerns to the appropriate authority to ensure this hospital does no further surgeries until they are at least audited.”

Khan: Mortality rates high in these children In spite of the findings, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan sought to defend the decision to send children to the Colombian hospital, stating the morbidity and mortality cases are high in these children.

In an interview with Furlonge and other board members present last Friday, Khan said: “Now if you want to take one case out of multiple cases and say, okay one case had a problem so we must

The outcome from Colombia has been very good and the costs has been one tenth of the cost of that of the United States.”

He also argued that four of the children had received treatment in the United States compared to only two in Colombia. “At the end of the day, mishaps occur in all surgical aspects,” said Khan.

“Seriously you have to ask the question? Unfortunately I have to tell you the answer is no! It may not be a happy answer for those people who like to hear those kind of things, but clearly what the job we have been trying to do we would not be looking for kickbacks.”

Furlonge argued that losing six lives out of over 200 was a small price to pay.

It is alleged that on July 6 at Providence Plantation Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), Persaud of Lots 94-97 First Hill, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, drove motor lorry GLL 8197 in a dangerous manner, thereby causing the death of Constable Williams.

The 25-year-old was represented by attorney Glen Hanoman who made an application for bail to be granted. Hanoman explained to the court that the location where Persaud resides houses his family business involving a trucking service which deals with the transportation of sand throughout the country. Caribbean Star Newspaper Five-part security strategy formed to crush criminal network July 10 – 16, 2015

T

he government will be working closely with the Guyana Police Force to ensure that there is a serious approach to tackling the country’s escalating crime situation, according to Minister of State Joseph Harmon who announced that there is a five-part security strategy in the works to crush this criminal network.

“Criminals have no place or no home… we will go after them relentlessly with every tool, every asset of the state, and that the criminals and their handlers will understand that the state will not sit idly by and allow them to run riot on the streets of this country,” he said during his weekly post cabinet press briefing held.

On Tuesday, President David Granger chaired a high-level security meeting with the aim of formulating a national plan to effectively tackle the crime situation. Granger viewed such a meeting as a matter of high priority and importance given the almost daily occurrence ofviolent crimes. There has been a noticeable increase for the past six weeks or so.

Speaking to reporters in the media centre at the Ministry of the Presidency, Harmon, while stressing the state’s resolve to ensure that citizens are safe, said government is sending a clear message to all that “wherever the intelligence lead takes us we are going to follow it and there will be no sacred cows where this matter is concerned.”

Harmon pointed out that the Granger

administration has the benefit of the expertise of persons such as criminologists, security experts and persons who would have written extensively on the country’s crime-related issues.

“We are aware that criminals… unless they are like bicycle thieves and so on they have a linkage behind when it comes to certain things and over the years we have had the opportunity of studying these things.

We had advised the previous administration on certain aspects of crime and certain aspects of security…,” the minister said.

He pointed out that in the Disciplined Forces Commission (DFC) report there are certain recommendations made that point in “that direction.”

And in what appears to be a direct reference to the recent shooting of businessman Ganesh Ramlall, Harmon said that for gunmen to turn up at the home of a man located not far from a police station and shoot him and jump on a bicycle and ride away “there has to have some kind of complicity in it.”

The four gunmen who waylaid Ramlall in his yard and shot him dead were said to have fled the area on bicycles. The Den Amstel Police Station, according to reports, is located about five minutes from the man’s home but despite being called the police arrived on the scene more than an hour after the shooting, relatives had said.

certain criminal acts and walk away or drive away there must be some persons or element behind him.

“Who is providing the getaway car? Who is providing them the access for them to do these things? Who is doing it?” Harmon asked.

He said particularly when it comes to gun crime there is a “linkage backward” and it is “really getting to the backward linkage that helps you with dealing with not just one incident but several incidents that would have taken place.”

Harmon stated that the previous crime fighting tactics looked at symptoms of crime and not the source of items such as guns.

“You can’t be fighting gun crime in the streets of Georgetown and don’t know where the guns coming from because all you are doing is dealing with the symptoms.

But there is a bigger issue… and this is why we have sat down with the security people, the police, the army and all of them and we are putting our best brains to this matter so that we can deal with it condignly and in a manner which would basically break the back of crime in this country,” Minister Harmon said.

He pointed out that there are persons who benefit from the criminal acts and as such they cannot just focus on the man on the bicycle riding away with the gun and not look for the person who provided him with the gun and the bicycle.

According to Harmon there has been some attempt at increasing the number of ranks in the Force.

He said that when government reviews the manner in which resources are deployed its view is that there has to be some level of redeployment of the manpower resources of the force. He said government expects that the commissioner, in his proposal to the president on fighting crime, will identify areas of shortfall in manpower and equipment and that once those shortfalls are justified then the resources will be made available. He stressed that it is all about protection and service.

Harmon said that the crime situation took centre stage at the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday. He said cabinet was briefed by Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan and Granger who had earlier in the day summoned a meeting of the security personnel and defined the outline of a strategy to deal with the upsurge in crime.

Also at that meeting were Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Harmon, Ramjattan, Minister of Social Cohesion Amna Ally, Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force Colonel Khemraj Persaud Harmon informed the media that the President has outlined a draft strategy which Ramjattan will “flesh out and basically refine with the commissioner of police to ensure that the citizens in this country are safe; that the criminals and the criminal underworld and the intellectual authors of criminal activity understand that this government has a very strong resolve to root out crime wherever it exists.”

He said that in this regard government has given “a commitment” to the police force that it will put all of the assets of the

state at its disposal to ensure that wherever criminal activity exists it will be rooted out “most viciously.”

Nothing was said about what role the army will play.

According to him, the “overt and covert operation which will have to be undertaken in this matter will be given the full backing of the state.” He informed that the president discussed five aspects of what the overall strategy will entail.

The first element deals with the police administration and the requirement to identify and determine across all ten administrative regions where these criminal acts are being committed and to decide on a strategy to deal with them on a national basis. “It was felt that the high incidence in gun crimes has its genesis in the fact that we shared a very long border with countries that actually produce small arm weapons,” he said. In this regard, government’s strategy will include border control activities and activities involving the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) in relation to the way in which goods and services are imported into the country and how the available instruments for this are used.

The second element has to with the police organisation and training. Harmon pointed out that Ramjattan has already given an undertaking that there will be more policemen on the street. “There was a clear directive to the police that we have to put more policemen on patrol and to remove them out of the offices where they are engaged in non-core functions of the Guyana Police Force.” Harmon emphasized that this element also encapsulates the deployment of ranks, response times to complaints and the operation of the 911 facility; all of which would be subjected to serious review over the next few weeks.

Harmon identified the third element as the issue of illegal firearms in the country and the manner in which it will be dealt with. He noted government’s zero tolerance stance to the use of illegal firearms.

The fourth element has to do with police assets and equipment. “The government has given a clear undertaking to the Guyana Police Force that it will provide the assets to go after criminal activity wherever it exists,” he said. This includes the ability to utilize aircraft and helicopters to overlook certain terrain which includes land and high seas where acts of piracy are being committed. He said the strategy will deal with the utilization of these assets to give the police a greater early warning capability. This element he said also includes the resuscitation of the police marine wing to give ranks greater flexibility and greater access to inland waterways. “Animals… dogs to go after criminals are all going to be part of the strategy.”

The fifth element focuses on significant improvement in police communication using the internet and access to the CCTV cameras. According to Harmon, the police were given the assurance that government is prepared to ensure that the cameras are all across the country; this will aid in the fight against criminal activity. Another feature of this element he said would be the networking of police stations countrywide through internet access.

I’tikaaf

10 days and nights of absolute dedication to the worship of Allah.

HADITH: Abu Saeed Khudri (Radhiallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) once performed ‘I’tikaaf’ in a tent (inside the Masjid) for the first ten days of Ramadan. Thereafter, he extended it to the middle ten days. Thereafter, he put his head out of the tent and said: “Verily in search of “Laylatul Qadr” did I perform “I’tikaaf” for the first ten days and extended it to the next ten days for the same purpose; then I was told that this night is in the last ten days; so those with me should also continue the “I’tikaf”. I had indeed been shown that night and then made to forget which one it shall be. And verily did I see myself prostrating to Allah with my forehead in mud on the morning after that night.

Therefore, seek “Laylatul Qadr” among the last ten nights of Ramadan; seek it among the odd ones.” Abu Saeed (Radi Allaho anho) says: “That same night it rained. The roof of the Masjid leaked, and I saw Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ?layhi Wasallam) performing ‘Sujood’ (prostration) in muddy clay; and that was the morning of the 21 st night.”

COMMENTARY: It was the general practice of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) to perform “I’tikaaf” in Ramadhan. At times he used to remain in the mosque for the whole month and, during the last year of his life, he was in “I’tikaaf” for twenty days. Because he usually secluded himself in the Masjid for the last ten days of Ramadhan, the ‘ulama’ consider it “Sunnah Muakkadah” to perform “I’tikaaf” for that period.

From the above Hadith, it can be deduced that the major objet behind “I’tikaaf” was to search for “Laylatul Qadr”. What better manner can there be for this search to remain in “Ibaadah” all the time, as in “I’tikaaf”, whether one is awake or asleep. Furthermore, in “I’tikaaf” one is free from all daily tasks and thus has all the time to be devoted to “Zikruilah” (the remembrance of Allah) and meditation.

Throughout Ramadhan, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) remained in “Ibaadah” and particularly, when the last ten days came along, he set no limit in exerting himself. He himself remained awake throughout the night and set the example of waking up his family for the same purpose. Aa’isha (Radhiallaahu anha) reports: “During the last ten days of Ramadhan, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) tied his trouser-cloth tightly about him, staying awake all night, and waking his family (for the purpose of “Ibaadah)”.”Tied his

trouser-cloth tightly about him” could mean either that he set no limits in exerting himself in “Ibaadah”; or that he completely avoided all forms of sexual contact with his wives.

HADITH NO. 2 Ibn Abbas (Radi Allaho Anho) relates that Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) said: “The person performing “I’tikaaf” remains free from sins, and he is indeed given the same reward as for those who do righteous deeds (in spite of not having done these deeds) as a result of having been secluded in the masjid.”

(Note that one remaining secluded in the masjid is not allowed to depart from there for worldly deeds. He may only go outside for the call of nature, to perform ablution or bath or for attending “Jumu’aa” when that is not performed in the same masjid, after which he must return forthwith.

COMMENTARY Now this Hadith points to two great benefits of “I’tikaaf”.

First, one avoids sin. The world all around us is full of temptations and very often one falls into sin without even intending to do so. To commit sin in the blessed month of Ramadhan is indeed a great injury to ourselves. Through remaining secluded in the masjid, one completely avoids the temptation to sin.

Secondly, it would appear outwardly that, when one is secluded in the masjid, one is apparently at a disadvantage by not being able to perform certain good deeds like joining in funeral prayers, attending burials, visiting the sick, etc.

Therefore, according to this Hadith, one is rewarded for these deeds even though not performing them. What a great favor from Allah! How great is Allah’s bounty! If only we can understand and properly appreciate these favors, which can attract the Mercy of Allah, but we are very neglectful of this and place little value on our “Deen.”

HADITH NO. 3 Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RadhiAllaho anho) reports that, while he was once in “I’tikaaf” in the Masjid-e-Nabawi (Prophet’s mosque), a certain man came to him, greeted him and sat down. Ibn Abbas said to him, ‘I see that you seem sad and troubled.” The man replied: “Yes. O son of the uncle of Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam), I am indeed troubled in that I have an obligation to fulfil towards someone. I swear by the

holiness of the inmate of this honored resting place (Rasulullah’s (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) grave) that I am not able to fulfil this obligation.” Ibn Abbas inquired: “Shall I intercede with that person on your behalf?” The man replied “By all means, if you so wish.” Ibn Abbas put on his shoes and proceeded out from the mosque. The man, seeing this, said: “Have you then forgotten that you are in “I’tikaaf?” Tears filling his eyes, Ibn Abbas replied: ‘No, but the occasion is still fresh in my mind when I heard the esteemed inmate of this tomb say: “Whoever sets forth in the way of settling a necessary affair on behalf of his brother, that service shall be better for him than to perform “I’tikaaf” for ten years; and whosoever performs “I’tikaaf” for a day (thereby seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah will spread three trenches between him and the fire of Hell, the width of each trench being greater than the distance between Heaven and the Earth.”

COMMENTARY Two things are clear from this Hadith. In the first place, we are told that, by way of reward for one day’s ‘I’tikaaf’, Allah spreads three trenches between him and the fire of “Jahannam”, the width of which equals the distance between the Heavens and the Earth. In Kashful Ghummah, Allaama Sha’raani relates a Hadith wherein Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) said: “Whoever performs “I’tikaaf” for the final ten days of Ramadhan; for him is the reward of two Hajj and two Umrahs; and whoever performs “I’tikaaf” from ‘Maghrib’ until Eshaa, doing nothing except performing “Salaat” and reciting the Qur’an, Allah will prepare a place for him in “Jannah.”

In the second place, we are told that performing a service for one’s brother brings a reward greater than ten years of “I’tikaaf”. For this reason, Ibn Abbas (RadhiAllaho anho) broke off his “I’tikaaf”; it was of course possible for him to continue it afterwards. The Sufis say that Allah has such sympathy for very few things as He has for a broken heart. It is for this reason that we have been so much warned of the Appeals to Allah of that person whose heart has been hurt through any unjust treatment or persecution. Whenever the Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) appointed anyone as a governor, in addition to advising him, he would also warn him to beware of the invocation (to Allah) of the persecuted. Note that “I’tikaaf” terminates when one leaves the mosque even for a task on behalf of a fellow Muslim. When that “I’tikaaf” is “Waajib”, it will mean that it has to be performed all over again. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ?layhi Wasallam) never left the mosque during “I’tikaaf”, except for the calls of nature and “Wudhu”. As for Ibn Abbas (Radhi Allaho anho) leaving the mosque to do some favour to a friend, it was in the spirit that is reminiscent of the soldier lying near death on the battle field of Yarmouk, refusing to drink water until his wounded comrade had been given the drink. On the other hand,it is quite possible that Ibn Abbas (Radhi Allaho anho) was performing “Nafl “I’tikaaf”, in which case it was permissible for him to break it off.

In conclusion, I now quote a lengthy

Hadith, in which many virtues are mentioned, and with this I conclude the book.

HADITH NO. 4 Ibn Abbas (Radi Allaho anho) says that he heard our Nabi (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) say: “Jannah” (paradise) is made fragrant with the sweetest perfumes in Ramadhan. From the very beginning of the year till the end, it is brightly decorated for the coming of this blessed month. And when the first night of Ramadhan appears, a wind blows from beneath the Arsh (Throne). It is called ‘Mutheera’ and causes the leaves of the trees of “Jannah” to rustle and door handles to vibrate, thus giving forth such a melodious sound as had never been heard before. The dark-eyed damsels of ‘Jannah’ then step forth till they appear in the center of the balconies of “Jannah”, exclaiming, “ Is there anyone praying to Allah for us that Allah may join us in marriage with him?”

Then these damsels call out: “O Ridhwaan, Keeper of Jannah! What night is this?” He replies: “Labbaik”, it is indeed the first night of Ramadhan, when the doors of “Jannah” are opened to those who observe the fast from among the “Ummah” of Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) further said: “Allah says, “O Ridhwan, open the doors of “Jannah” and O Maalik (Keeper of “Jahannam”), close the doors of “Jahannam” for those who fast from among the “Ummah” of Ahmad (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam). O Jibraeel, proceed down to the Earth and bind all. the rebellious “Shayateen”, put them in chains, cast them in the oceans, so that they make no mischief, to spoil the fast of the “Ummah” of My beloved Muhammad (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam).’ Allah commands a caller from the heavens to call out three times on every one of the nights of Ramadhan: “Is there anyone begging of Me that I may grant him his desire? Is there anyone repenting to me that I may turn in mercy to him? Is there anyone begging my forgiveness that I may forgive him? Who is there who shall give a loan to the One whose wealth does not diminish, and the One Who duly pays back without any deductions.”

Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) said further: “Every day at the time of “Iftaar” Allah sets free one thousand such souls from the fire of “Jahannam” who had previously been found deserving Jahannam. On the last night, He sets free as many more as had been set free throughout the month. On the night of Laylatul Qadr, Allah commands Jibra’il to descend to the earth with a large group of “Malaaikah”. They descend carrying a green flag, which is then planted on top of the Ka’bah.

Jibra’il (Alayhis Salaam) himself has one hundred wings, two of which are spread out on this night only. He spreads out these two wings so that their width extends from east to west. Jibraaeel (Alayhis Salaam) then sends out the “Malaaikah” in all directions to offer salutation to anybody they find standing in prayer or sitting, performing “Salaat” or celebrating the praises of Allah. They shake hands with them and say “Aameen” to all their prayers (Duaas) until dawn. When dawn comes, Jibra’il (Alayhis Salaam) calls out: ‘Depart

“Mala’ikah” of Allah, depart.’ The Mala’ikah then inquire: ‘O, Jibraeel what did Allah do regarding the needs that the faithful ones from among the “Ummah” of Ahmad (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) put before Him?” Jibra’il (Alayhis Salam) replies: “Allah looked at them with Mercy and pardoned them all, except four kinds of people.”

Thereupon, we the “Sahaabah inquired: “Who are they, O Rasulullah?”

Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) replied: “They are the ones who are addicted to wine, those disobedient to their parents, those who cut themselves off from their near relatives, and those who harbour ill-will against their fellow beings and break off relations with them.”

And then the night of Eid ul Fitr, the night that is called “Laylatul Jaa’izah”, (the night of prize giving), comes along.

On the morning of Eid, Allah sends down the Malaa’ikah to all the lands of the Earth, where they take their positions on all the streets and lanes, calling out with a voice that is heard by all except men and Jinn: “O “Ummah” of Muhammad, (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) come forth from your houses towards the Lord, Who is Noble and Gracious, Who grants abundantly and pardons the major sins.” When they proceed for their Eid “Salaat”, Allah says to the Malaaikah: “What indeed is the reward of that employee who has rendered full service?” The “Malaaikah” reply: “O our Lord and Master, it is only right that he shall receive his reward in full for his services.” Allah then says: “I call you to witness, O My Malaa’ikah, that for their having fasted for Me during the month of Ramadhan, and for their having stood before Me in prayer by night, I have granted to them as a reward of My pleasure and have granted them forgiveness. O My servants, ask now of Me, for I swear by My Honour and Greatness, that whatsoever you shall beg of Me this day in this assembly of yours for the needs of Your Hereafter, I shall grant you; and whatever you shall ask for your worldly needs, I shall grant what is to your advantage. By My Honour do I swear, as long as you shall obey My commands, I shall cover up your faults. By My Honour and My Greatness do I swear, that I shall never disgrace you in front of the transgressors and disbelivers. Return now from here; you are forgiven. I have now come to the end of this book and, in conclusion, hope that this shall be of benefit to those who seek Allah’s pleasure. SA trucksBRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Wednesday July 8, 2015 – A day after calling out public servants to protest, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) has instructed employees its represents at the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) to stop working.

The action – Phase 2 of the industrial action sparked by the forced retirement of workers at the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) –

will mean no garbage collection or provision of grave digging services by the SSA. There will also be a “go-slow” at the Bridgetown Port.

And action will escalate to a national shutdown by Friday if there is no intervention to resolve the dispute, the union’s acting general secretary Roslyn Smith warned yesterday.

The NUPW wants the BIDC to reinstate the 10 employees over the age of 60 who

A total of 13 people over the age of 60 went home but the BIDC said two of the other three had indicated prior to the BIDC’s decision that they wanted to retire by August while the other was not appointed in a post.

With the BIDC standing its ground, the NUPW staged a march through the City on Monday, attracting around 5,000 public sector workers and supporters.

“We are announcing our second phase of action because to date we have not heard anything from the Minister of Labour or the Prime Minister on the issue, in terms of holding a meeting to discuss the issue,” Smith said at a media conference yesterday.

“If the government refuses to intervene, then between now and Friday you will see a total shutdown in Barbados . . .

For the sake of the nation we should hope that something happens, because we are not moving from our stance,” the NUPW general secretary insisted, adding that industrial action would continue for as long as necessary.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has indicated that he would broker talks between the two sides if asked.

he Police in ‘B’ Division are presently investigating an armed robbery which occurred on Monday evening in East Canje, Berbice leaving businesswoman Angela Hussain, 39 years, nursing a gunshot wound to the head.

Hussain is presently in the Intensive Care Unit of the New Amsterdam Hospital where she is undergoing treatment for the injury.

From all indications, the bullet grazed the right side of her head, from the temple to the ear. It made a clean exit. She is expected to recover.

Her husband, Faizal was treated for his injuries, but was not hospitalized.

According to reports, five masked gunmen invaded the premises of the Hussain family of Lot 62 Brehaspat Street, No.2 Village, East Canje sometime around 19:00hrs, terrorized the family and carted off a large quantity of jewellery and an undisclosed sum

Stabroek News was informed that the five bandits stormed the residence mere minutes before the family was scheduled to close the shop and retire for the evening. A relative related that after making their presence known, two of the bandits returned outside and stood guard at the gate periodically firing shots into the air while the other three entered the house via the shop at the front and demanded cash and jewellery.

“I was sitting outside of the shop and they run in and yelled nobody move and they kick in the door and come in,” the relative recalled. At this point the bandits gathered all five family members present and herded them into the kitchen where they were grilled on where money and jewellery was stashed. Meanwhile, two of the bandits were busy ransacking the shop. “They took money, all the sales for the day: the money we had in the bag and the bucket, they just take it and push it in their bags,” the relative said.

However, not satisfied with the loot, they gun butted Faizal Hussain in the head repeatedly as they demanded the family hand over their jewellery. “One of them took the gun and kept lashing (Faizal) in his head until (Angela) went bring out all the gold,” the relative stated.

Grabbing the jewellery and cash the men made their way out of the yard, but one of them apparently was still dissatisfied with the yield and returned, demanding more money. When Angela denied having more, she was shot in the head at point blank range. “They run out first, and then one of them said this is not all that we get and they come in back and snatch her, and she said she doesn’t have anything more and that’s when he shot her in her head. He was very close to her,” Shabana related.

The bandits made good their escape using a back street and straight to a waiting dark coloured car that had no number plate. The ordeal lasted some 45 minutes during which time neighbours upon hearing the gunshots and realizing what was transpiring tried to summon the police but were reportedly told that there were no patrol vehicles available for the ranks to respond. “When the police was summoned, they took forever to respond and when they eventually came, they just peep and patrol the area a little and took statements,” the relative noted.

The spent shells recovered from the scene appear to have come from hand guns. Investigations are ongoing. The Hussain family, who has been operating a shop at their residence for some two decades now, has been robbed several times, most notably in 2001 and 2005 when they were relieved of large sums of money. This is the first time someone was injured in the process.

The family was visited yesterday by Region Six Chairman David Armogan and former PPP/C Attorney General Anil Nandlall.

resident David Granger convened a high-level security meeting on developing a strategy to address the recent upsurge in crimes and government afterward emphasised that it would be going after criminals.

A report issued by the Government Information Agency (GINA) stated that Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Minister of State Joseph Harmon, Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Social Cohesion Amna Ally, Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force Colonel Khemraj Persaud were in attendance at the meeting with the president. The presence of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the GDF would suggest that the government was contemplating using it in the crime fight.

It was stated that there were initial dis-

cussions for the development of a broadbased strategic crime fighting approach that will deliver short and long term goals.

“The clear message coming out of this initial meeting is that the Administration intends to move swiftly and vigorously to arrest violent crime in Guyana,” the report said.

It added that more details of the meeting and information on further engagements will be made available to the public shortly as the government intensifies its efforts to tackle the escalating crime situation.

Efforts by this newspaper last evening to get more information on what was discussed were unsuccessful.

The GINA report also said that the administration’s message to criminals is: “We are coming after you.”

For the past six weeks, there have been

almost daily reports of serious crimes and some have resulted in death and serious injury. The situation has left many citizens feeling fearful.

Observers have pointed out that both the previous government and the Guyana Police Force have failed miserably to deal with the crime situation knowing that during the June to August period there would be a rise in crimes given the increase in commercial activity. Former police commissioner Henry Greene had said in 2010 that the force has recognised that there was a link between the upsurge in armed robberies for hard cash and big entertainment shows headlined by international artists during the July/August period. However, there was little to show that the force or the then government did anything to address this situation.

17-YEAR-OLD Moruga schoolboy was gunned down as he stood at his workbench hustling to complete some wrought iron windows for a customer in order to pay the insurance for a car he recently purchased..

A student of Moruga Composite School, Tylon Dyer of Petit Cafe, Indian Walk Road, collapsed between the workbench bench and material on being shot. He died on the spot. His father Victor “Ping” Marcano found his body with a gaping gunshot wound at the back of the head. Dyer would have entered Form Five at the start of the new school term in September.

Relatives believe the young welder paid the ultimate price for a close male relative who in 2010 faced murder charges but was released from prison two months ago and returned home to live.

Quick work by police officers resulted in them impounding a silver colored Nissan Tiida car believed to be used as the getaway vehicle. Police are also using footage from CCTV cameras installed on the premises to assist with their investigations.

Dyer’s death has come as a shock to those who watched him grow up in the close knit community. Everyone agreed that he was honest and hard working and was never involved in criminal activities.

“He worked hard and always worked honestly for his money. But good things don’t last long,” grieving father Marcano said yesterday of his son as he stood in shock outside the scene of the incident.

Ping is the owner of the welding/fabricating shop where he and his son worked. The teen was described as one of the best young welders in the community who had a bright future ahead of him.

“He was my right hand. He was disciplined although just a boy. If he told you he is finishing your job tomorrow, don’t waste your money betting against him keeping his promise. He worked very hard. At his age it was all about the girls and making an honest dollar,” Marcano said.

The shocked father said he had been suffering severe back pain and was at home nearby when the shooting took place. By the time reached the work area, his son was already dead. “When I saw the hole in the back of his head, I turned stupid,” Marcano said. At about 1.30 pm, Dyer was inside the welding shop when the Tiida car pulled up outside the businessplace and a masked gunman exited the vehicle. The gunman opened fire as he entered the shop, hitting the unsuspecting teen multiple times at the back of the head.

Inspector Don Gajadhar along with officers of the Princes Town CID, Southern Division Task Force and Southern Homicide Division visited the scene. The abandoned vehicle was found in the La Romaine area.

The teen’s mother Margaret Dyer of Contention Street in Princes Town was inconsolable as she arrived on the scene. “I begged to come and live with me. But he never wanted to, he always wanted to live with his father and learn the trade from him.

My son was doing so well. I can’t believe that is him lying there dead,” she cried.

“He got shot and paid the price for another relative who recently came out of prison after being cleared of a murder charge,” Dyer said. As her son’s body was being placed in the hearse, Dyer screamed. “Tylon! Don’t go in the dead people van. Come back home son,” she cried.

Friends of the youth man wept unashamedly at the side of the road near the welding shop.

No arrest has been made and investigati­ ons are continuing.

n Tuesday evening the board of trustees, Pandit Lakeram Maharaj, and the devotees, of Tulsi Mandir ended their nine nights of Yajnas to celebrate the temple’s first anniversary which was lovingly built and decorated with beautiful murtis and murals.

Mandirs, have a long history which started in India, where the scriptures were regularly read and discoursed upon, and the mass population was given free and regular access to the stories, the epics, and the scriptural tradition that was the foundation of their culture.

Tulsi Mandir is no different because the discourses and satsangs are available to all who are interested.

Previously Tulsi Mandir held satsangs in a basement for about ten years before this beautiful temple, was built.

Sanatan Dharma Each time devotees enter one of these beautiful mandirs to listen to the Hindu’s holy scriptures they become more deeply connected with Sanatan Dharma, which encapsulate these great laws and disciplines to uphold, sustain, and ultimately lead humanity to the heights of worldly and spiritual glory.

This was expounded on by Pandit Maharaj, when he explained the death of Vali, the Vanara King. He was good and pious but turned angry against his brother Sugriva, over one mistake he made. Sugriva escaped but Vali took his wife Ruma. As he laid on the ground dying from Shree Ram’s arrow: He asked “what was my crime?”

Shree Ram told him he was unforgiving towards his brother. Forgiveness and tolerance are important traits in life therefore Shree Ram had the right to punish evils and embrace righteousness. Yet the Lord was compassionate towards him, granted him moksha, and in his next life he became a hunter. But what was interesting was that although Vali was considered wicked he got to see Shree Ram face to face before his soul left the body and expressed his desire to the Lord who granted them. Only God knows what’s in our heart and only he can grant us our desires.

Conclusion As humans we don’t know how many more births we’ll take on earth so we should practice a devout life if we want to continue taking the human form. Many of us have the world in one hand and God in the other. In the end we allow the world to take precedence over the Divine which will destroy us.

Like the peacock with many eyes on it feathers which has no value but vanity so is the world. Perhaps we can rise above all the filth that surround us like the lotus flowers, said Pandit Maharaj.

The lotus plants grow in all kinds of impure water. It’s leaves and flowers are above the water and each time the water level rises it lifts itself above. What about us humans?

We all have a tiny spark of divinity in us have been given dominion over 8, 400,000 species. Surely we can rise above the maya that surround us and spend time with God. If we put God first place in our lives we need not to worry about anything. He will make our lives spiritually richer and we will exude happiness and contentment and prosper abundantly.

“Take accountability for your lazy devotional life and stop blaming time, faith, and God, for you are part of him,” said Pandit Maharaj.

Do some introspection and find out which part of your character you want to nurture because we have the capacity to be many things. We can be selfish, unloving, loving or we can experience condition of extreme confusion among many other emotions. This is where satsangs can help to overcome these feelings and build your spirituality. Spend time meditating on the scriptures. God is a loving God and doesn’t want us to experience pain and agony but to get us to pay attention we might be forced to experience some unhappiness.

As the yajna culminated Tulsi Mandir entered into its second year as a house of worship. There will be many more yajnas as God will open the flood gates for the devotees to prosper in every area of their Hindu Dharma.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL

n the New Testament Gospel of Luke, we read of Jesus’ disciples making a request of Him. “And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. (Luke 11:1)” You have to get this – they saw Him praying, waited until He was finished, then asked Him to teach them. Notice, they did not ask Him to teach them how to perform miracles or preach attractive sermons, not even how to communicate and attract crowds. They had observed Jesus in prayer many times. Jesus prayed early in the morning. He called on His Heavenly Father before feeding the five thousand with five loaves and two fishes.

After the crowd left, He went up a mountain and prayed in the night. He prayed all night before selecting the twelve disciples. Later, He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was always in the habit of praying. The disciples realized this was His source of power, so they went to the very Source.

Prayer is a wonderful privilege offered to every person.

Every person born into this world is wired to have a relationship with the Creator. The soul of man will never be at peace until it connects with Him, and that is through prayer. We were made to worship God, serve Him (many times by serving our fellow man), and exalt His name among the nations. People will find something to worship if they don’t know God through His Son Jesus Christ.

People will serve something, whether a philosophy, fellow man or an idol. Whilst the mind searches for something to idolize and the body craves appetites, the soul gets thirsty for the living God. Be assured that He loves you, cares about your concerns and wants to help you deal with every circumstances. “For he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6).” It is never the right of anyone to stand before our Holy God for we have all sinned and come short of His glory. It is a privilege granted to us because Jesus purchased our salvation on the Cross and now we are accepted.

There are many kinds of prayers.

Prayer will put a demand on your time, but it is time well spent and will prove more valuable than any other activity on our schedule. So, what can we pray for? It ought not to be a boring exercise. Christians know a simple way to remember high points of praying using the acrostic A-C-T-S.

A - stands for adoration. Most people use descriptions of God from the Psalms in worship and adoration. When you begin this sweet conversation, you will want to come back to it again and again.

C - stands for confession. Confess your sins to God and ask Him to forgive you. Remember thinking about it is not enough, you need speak it out, then by faith receive His forgiveness. Confess as many sins as come to mind. You will see what great freedom will come to your soul.

T - stands for thanksgiving. If we should count our blessings, it will take a very long time. Thank God for today’s blessings, the things He did recently, your family, your church, His Son Jesus, the Blessed Holy Spirit, and so on.

S - stands for supplication. This word implies you have tried and reached your limit, so you bring your situation to Him. Ask Him to supply your needs and the needs of others.

Prayer must become a normal part of our daily schedule.

If your doctor orders a certain medication taken daily, can you decide to take all at once because you don’t have time every day for that? No! You have to take the daily dose. Well, in the same way, we need a daily dose of prayer. The Bible exhorts us to pray consistently.

Psalm 55:17 “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”

Psalm 119:164 “Seven times a day do

I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.”

Psalm 34:1 “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Luke 18:1 “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”

Ephesians 6:18 “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

The soul is thirsty for God. Ps. 63:1 “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.”

The soul is desperate and obsessed for God. Without this vital connection with the living God, the soul will crave substitutes. We can try looking into various forms of pleasure, and keep going back with emptiness because that is not what the soul desires. We can try accomplishments and find dissatisfaction when we have achieved and yet feel unfulfilled because that is not what the soul desires.

We can try friendships or recognition and applause, but that is not what the soul desires. Psalm 42:1-4 expresses the cry of the soul so candidly: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.”

Take time to pray often. It is worth the time – every hour, every minute – reaching out to our Heavenly Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. God will give you more in that quiet time than you can strive to achieve by yourself. Take your family to church this weekend.

Caribbean Star Newspaper US nurse gets five years for cocaine smuggling plot July 10 – 16, 2015

United States citizen broke down in tears at the Providence Magistrate’s Court yesterday after she was sentenced to five years jail for supplying cocaine to be smuggled out of the country.

Dawn Saul-Khan maintained her innocence throughout the trial, which lasted almost two years. “I had no knowledge. I had no knowledge,” Saul-Khan shouted as she broke down before Magistrate Leron Daly, who handed down the sentence.

Saul-Khan was initially charged with being in possession of 365 grammes of cocaine for trafficking on October 12th, 2012.

The prosecution’s case, which was led

by Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Telford, was that Saul-Khan, a registered nurse from New York, had returned to Guyana on October 7th, 2012 and had procured another woman, Shaniqua Johnson and brought her to Guyana the following day. Four days later, Johnson was found with narcotics strapped to her body at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri (CJIA).

While in custody, Johnson had told the police that Saul-Khan had forced her to take the substance back to the United States of America. She testified against her at the trial.

The court had heard from Johnson that Saul-Khan had brought her from the United States and had housed her in a house at Alexander Village. She had explained that on the day in question, around 4AM, SaulKhan had woken her up and instructed her that she had to take the package back to the United States or she wouldn’t be able to leave. Johnson further told the court that Saul-Khan had all of her travel documents and had threatened that she would not return them unless she was willing to return to the United States on her terms and conditions. Johnson had recounted in depth to the court how Saul-Khan had strapped the

Saul-Khan was previously charged with obstructing the course of justice as it was alleged that she had threatened persons that were held in connection to smuggling drugs out of the country. That charge was later dismissed.

Truck driver from pg. 9 said the offence with which his client has been charged is a bailable one and he would be surprised if the prosecution objected to bail although he was quite aware that it was a police rank who was involved in the accident. Hanoman told David Persaud the court that the family of the defendant is well known to him and he would ensure that if granted bail Persaud would return for his trial. He described the incident as a freak accident.

But Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and the penalty it attracts. According to Jones, the accident was not a “freak” one as described by the defence attorney but rather it involved a young police officer who was on duty making preparation for an event, when the truck approached with a speed. Jones said it was therefore due to the negligence of Persaud that Williams’s head was crushed, while noting that the post-mortem examination found that he died as a result of a crushed chest and head.

After a lengthy proceeding the magistrate refused bail and suspended Persaud’s driver’s licence. The matter was adjourned to July 22.

Constable Williams, 19, of Lot 113, Number 53 Village, Berbice was killed on Monday when his head was crushed by a sand truck while he was assisting in making preparations for the ‘Soca on the Beach’ show at the new Hits and Jams Water World located at Providence, EBD. The dead man’s aunt had told Stabroek News that although she wasn’t present when the accident occurred, she was told that Edson was in the process of placing barricades on the access road to the Hits and Jams Water World when the truck, which was laden with sand and was heading to a nearby construction site, struck him down.

Caribbean Star Newspaper Warner's lawyers object to August adjournment date

A

ttorneys representing former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner said Thursday their client was legally obliged to ask for a dismissal of his extradition case if the formal request from US authorities was not received by July 26.

Senior Counsel Fyard Hosein made the submission as he objected to an application for the matter to be adjourned to August 10.

The request for the adjournment date came from special State prosecutor Queen's Counsel Allan Newman.

Newman requested the date to give the Attorney General Garvin Nicholas enough time to issue the authority to proceed in the matter.

Newman said it would take approximately two weeks for this to be done and if the formal request was received on the 60-day deadline, July 26, the first available court date will be August 10.

He is scheduled to re-appear on July 27 to determine if the official request was made and then again on August 10.

Warner was indicted via a provisional warrant in May after the US Department of Justice announced its results of their investigation into him and 13 of his col-

leagues.

Warner and his former colleagues face a total of 47 charges for allegedly taking part in a scheme involving the soliciting and collecting of bribes for media and marketing rights for several major international football tournaments.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation was initiated following allegations of corruption in the bidding process for the Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 World Cups but was eventually widened to include questionable deals spanning over two decades.

Warner, 72, of Cynthia Drive, Five Rivers, Arouca, is accused of 12 charges related to fraud, racketeering and for engaging in illegal wire transfers. The offences are alleged to have taken place in the United States, T&T and other jurisdictions between 1990 and when Warner quit Fifa in June 2011. He is currently on $2.5 million bail.

Caribbean Star Newspaper Farfan and Mendes launches billion-dollar complex

he $1B Farfan and Mendes Limited (FML) headquarters at Providence, East Bank Demerara was commissioned last evening and promises more space and security for customers.

There are also plans to implement measures to assist the timber industry.

Various past and current government officials such as Minister in the Ministry of Social Protection, Simona Broomes, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, Minister of Tourism, Cathy Hughes and former Prime Minister Sam Hinds were present at the grand opening ceremony and launch of the new headquarters.

The new facility will be the main hub for FML customers and there will be more space for customers and room for more than 60 vehicles to park. There is also additional space for heavy-duty vehicles to load equipment and other items comfortably.

Andrew Mendes, Managing Director of FML, said that the entire construction of the building and the preparation of the land cost around $1B in total, with the building amounting to approximately $850M.

The new building at Providence Mendes pointed out that business was slightly hindered at the previous Georgetown headquarters on Urquhart Street due to traffic congestion and parking issues. Mendes said it was difficult to reach out to new customers and bring them to the previous location.

“We are agents of change,” Mendes stated as he highlighted the growth FML has had since its 1967 launch in Guyana.

Mendes said that while FML is built on the foundation of integrity and supplying quality equipment, he hopes that the new building will rubbish the idea many people have that “Guyana doesn’t produce quality products and services”.

“We don’t provide the cheapest products but we provide the cheapest solutions,” Mendes said,

Magistrate Sherdel Marcus-Isaacs, in the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court on Tuesday, ruled that a prima facie case was made out against the defendant, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Peter Hugh.

Sunthgolam is expected to stand trial during the next sitting of the Berbice Assizes.

The police alleged that Sunthgolam had borrowed a sum of money, and had gone to the home of the deceased to make a partial payment and to collect his Guyana passport, which contained a U.S. visa. However, there was a disagreement and Mc Lean was fatally wounded.

MSC will be first cruise line to homeport in Cuba

ENOA, Italy, Wednesday July 8, 2015 – In what is widely viewed as a further sign that Cuba is set to consolidate its position as a major Caribbean tourism player, Italian-owned MSC Cruises will homeport in the communist Caribbean country from this winter.

MSC will be the first major cruise line to homeport in Cuba, with the 2,120-passenger MSC Opera embarking on week-long cruises from Havana starting December 22.

Travel Weekly reports that the cruises will include two nights and two-and-a-half days in Havana, and will also visit Montego Bay, Jamaica; Cozumel, Mexico; and Georgetown in the Cayman Islands. The seasonal schedule will end in April.

Shore excursions will be offered through Cubanacan, a Cu-

ba-based travel group, and will include the UNESCO World Heritage old quarter and the famous Malecon seafront promenade.

The first MSC cruise will depart from Havana following MSC Opera’s Grand Voyage from Genoa to Cuba.

The ship will leave Cuba for the season on April 12, 2016, for a Grand Voyage back to Europe, arriving in Germany on May 7.

MSC said it will have flycruise packages for passengers in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Canada, Brazil and Argentina.

MSC Opera is currently in dry dock as part of a $220 million plan to upgrade four of the cruise line’s older ships.

In a statement, MSC chief executive Gianni Onorato thanked the transportation and tourism ministers in Cuba for “their continued highly professional contribution.”

These restrictions are predicted to be overturned imminently, however.

Caribbean cruises calling at Cuba and already popular with Americans are offered by Star Clippers and the Celestyal Cruises offshoot Cuba Cruise, which uses the ship Celestyal Cristal.

Other small and mid-ship cruise lines already calling at Cuba include Thomson Cruises, Fred Olsen Cruise Line and Saga Cruises, as well as cultural cruise lines Swan Hellenic and Noble Caledonia.

Carnival, the world’s largest cruise ship company, is expected to add Cuba to its itinerary next year.

The new Cuba itineraries have replaced MSC Opera’s original winter 2015-16 schedule in the Canary Islands, Madeira and Morocco.

s 66-year-old actor-turned-politician, Hema Malini, has held the father of the deceased girl responsible for the accident in Dausa, in her tweet, the family members taking care of the injured, on Wednesday, said such thing was expected from celebrity like her.

The family has advised her to pray for the faster recovery of the injured rather than playing blame game.

It may be recalled that, on Thursday, one two-year-old girl Chinni was killed while five others including Chinni's family members and Hema Malini were injured in a collision between an Alto car and Mercedes near Dausa. After the accident, the family had said that had Hema Malini took their daughter along to the hospital, the life of the two-year-old girl could have been saved. Police registered a case under appropriate sections of IPC including section 304-A (Causing death due to negligence) against the driver of Mercedes who was later released on bail.

After returning to Mumbai following a massive accident, the actress, in her tweet on July, 6, wrote, "How I wish the girl's father had followed the traffic rules-then this accident could have been averted and the lil one's life safe!" [sic] This came after Hema's daughter Isha Deol, on Saturday, had promised financial aid for the family while her mother got discharged from the hospital.

The tweet also came when State Human Rights Commission has taken a suo motto cognizance of the incident and has sought explanation from the district SP, Dausa, and the chief medical and health officer, Dausa.

Terming it an expected thing, Ashok Gupta, cousin of Hanuaman Khandelwal who is undergoing treatment along with his wife Shikha, son Somil and sister-in-law Seema, said to TOI, "My brother Hanuman knows his skills of driving. He is well versed with the Dausa-Bharatpur highway and had never met with an accident. The fact that he had never applied for insurance claim for his vehicle clears that he is good at driving. That day he was turning after seeing on his left. Suddenly the Hema Malini's Mercedes came and hit the Alto car badly."

"She could be a big shot but rather than at least praying for the speedy recovery of the family, she has entered into this blame game. I will request her to keep calm, take care of her injury and pray or our family as we have already lost a little girl," Gupta added.

A senior doctor taking care of the injured family members, said, "All of them have fatal injuries. The 5-year-old Somil has five fractures, his mother has four fractures and muscle raptures and his father, Hanuman who was driving also have serious injuries."

tand-up comedian Russell Brand's cell phone was stolen during his latest visit to India.

The 40-year-old Get Him to the Greek star was in India to perform his stand-up show for the Comedy Central Chuckles Festival in cities Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore.

During his visit to the slums, where he went to meet the underprivileged residents, his cell phone was stolen from the pocket of his trousers, reported Contactmusic. Brand posted a video on Instagram, describing the incident.

Based on Art Linson's script, the production is slated to begin in New York early next year, reported Variety.

PROBE INTO KAMLA'S 'BABY'

NTERIM chairman of the Children's Life Fund Authority (CLFA) Dr Colin Furlonge is promising a thorough audit into all allegations of theft and financial misappropriation as uncovered in a TV6 News and Express investigation over the last few days.

The Children's Life Fund is the brainchild of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and she boasts of the number of less fortunate children it has helped with medical expenses.

Furlonge, who is also the Chief Medical Officer, said questions only arose in 13 cases of the 221 children the fund has helped.

Speaking on TV6's Morning Edition yesterday, Furlonge said the board of directors will determine whether an employee forged parents' signatures and took money owed to them for travel expenses.

“We are engaging in a forensic audit to look at all matters from the beginning to the end. Hopefully, we can expedite that because there is a need to clear the air. I don't think they will find that money was misappropriated in terms of hospitals. The other matter, we are taking it seriously but remember, out of 13 ca­ses in which money was handed to the CEO, four were to Miss Genevieve Madoo whereas she claims money went elsewhere,” he said Senior police sources told the Express Madoo was summoned to the Fraud Squad in Port of Spain yesterday, to give an official statement to police on allegations of the theft of US money she uncovered while she was CEO from March 2014 to May 2105.

After having brought that, Dr Furlonge got very upset with me and said he did not want me forwarding any of the information to him; he only wanted the printed e-mail of the contents of the message the supervisor sent,” said Madoo.

Madoo said she complied with this request and Dr Furlonge then asked the bank to forward the relevant information to him.

Clarke, also worked for sister companies KREM TV and KREM Radio, was described an intelligent, driven and promising young journalist.

Amandala editor Russell Vellos said it was terrible that his future had been cut short, and violently so.

“We will feel his loss; he will be hard to replace. He was intelligent, a good young man and a loyal worker. Through his work, he had made many friends in the media, and along with us, they will all miss him,” he said.

A statement issued yesterday by the newspaper added: “We are still in disbelief over the tragic loss of this very promising and ambitious young journalist. On a day like today, Kareem would have been hard at work, juggling several stories for publication in the mid-week edition of the Amandala newspaper. His murder has left a vacuum that will be very hard to fill.”

Caribbean Star Newspaper Caribbean fights to protect high-value, declining species

INGSTON, Jamaica, Tuesday July 7, 2015, IPS – Threats from climate change, declining reefs, overfishing and possible loss of several commercial species are driving the rollout of new policy measures to keep Caribbean fisheries sustainable.

Regional groups and the US-based NGO Wild Earth Guardians have petitioned for the listing of some of the Caribbean’s most economically valuable marine species as vulnerable, endangered or threatened with extinction.

In addition, regional scientists believe that climate change could alter the ranges of some of the larger species and perhaps wipe out existing ones.

Fisheries ministers of the Caribbean say they are concerned that “extra-national activities and decisions” could impact the social and economic well-being of their countries and their access to international markets. They have agreed to work together to protect both the sustainability and trade of several high value marine species.

At a meeting in November 2014, the Ministerial Council of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) expressed alarm at the US government’s decision to list the Nassau Grouper, a commercially traded species, under the US Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Even after successfully thwarting the listing of the Queen Conch (Strombus gigas), they fret that other species would go the way of the Nassau Grouper.

The conch and Nassau grouper are two of 19 Caribbean species the Wild Earth Guardians say are in need of protection.

The list includes one coral, one ray, five sharks, two sawfish, four groupers and the Queen Conch.

Regional fisheries officials know that such listings will shut down international trade of the affected species. Alternatively, it could lead to rigorous permits and quota systems that prevent trade by vulnerable populations in countries that are without working management structures.

The Guardians say they are driven by the critical state of many Caribbean species and the seemingly insatiable US demand for them. The 14 marine species named are already listed as protected or threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), endan-

gered species associate Taylor Jones told IPS. “Specifically in terms of the conch, we note that the US appetite for conch meat is having an impact on stocks in the Caribbean,” she said.

Jones noted that when the Guardians take action the aim is to limit the impact of US consumption patterns – which has already caused the collapse of its own conch fishery – on the rest of the world.

The United States is the largest importer of conch meat, consuming 78 per cent of production, estimated at between 2,000 and 2,500 pounds annually.

While the Guardians failed in their bid to have the conch included in the ESA, concern for the struggling populations of Conch continue. Even though the US closed Florida’s Conch fisheries in 1986, the population has still not recovered and the fisheries in its Caribbean territories are also in poor shape.

In the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), one of the region’s largest exporter of the mollusk, biologist Kathleen Woods reports that conch stocks are on the brink of collapse.

“TCI’s conch stocks are now in a critical phase,” she said. “Preliminary results of the conch visual survey indicate that TCI does not have sufficient densities of adult conch to sustain breeding and spawning. This means that unless the fishery is closed to allow the stocks to recover, it will probably collapse within the next four years.”

The CRFM Secretariat says it is already looking at management plans for the species most eaten or exploited by its member states. The secretariat says there is evidence that Nassau Grouper populations and spawning aggregations are in decline and is supporting the listing.

The Secretariat has drafted a strategy to implement minimum standards for the management, conservation and protection for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) across all 17 member states. The Secretariat cites concern for falling catches, declining habitats and the absence of adequate management systems in some countries.

Caribbean favorites like the Parrotfish and sea eggs (sea urchins) are in serious decline. Regional groups are seeking to

ban those and other species to protect remaining populations and the reef. Some countries have already restricted the capture of the Parrotfish and the IUCN has recommended its listing as a specially protected species under the Protocol for Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW Protocol).

CRFM has already implemented a management plan for the Eastern Caribbean Flying fish, which supports a small but lucrative trade in the countries that fish for the species. A coral reef action plan is

July 10 – 16, 2015 also in place, a review of the legislation of several member states has been completed, alongside the rollout of public awareness programmes for regional fishers.

One drawback: the rules are non-binding and left up to individual governments to implement.

Woods, who until mid-2014 headed the TCI government’s Environment and Marine Department, noted that despite the existence of regulations that exceed those introduced by the CRFM, conch and lobster habitats in that country “continue to be degraded and lost because of poor development practices like dredging, the use of caustic materials like bleach for fishing and other activities.”

Veteran TCI fisherman Oscar Talbot echoes Woods belief that a combination of factors, including a lack of political will, poor enforcement and corruption in the regulatory agencies, are the reasons the Conch stocks are close to collapsing.

“Poacher boats, illegal divers and some politicians with their own (processing) plants have played a role in the improper exploitation of the fish, lobster and conch. We also have a lot of fisherman and poachers taking juvenile conch in and out of season,” he said.

TCI is one of the few countries that continue to allow the capture and consumption of sea turtles and sharks, but Woods believes exploitation of these spe-

cies by locals is sustainable. Talbot wants fishers to stick to the rules and exploit the resources during the open seasons only.

A fisherman for over 40 years, Talbot said the unregulated catches are impacting all the islands’ local fisheries. He is concerned that undersized conchs of up to 18 to the pound have been taken, a sore point for the grandfather who sits on the fisheries advisory council of the TCI. But while regional leaders express “outrage” at the actions of the NGOs, regional fishers support Talbot’s view that only external pressure will force governments to act.

For most countries, the lack of personnel, funding and illegal fishing have hampered progress. This is not lost on the Guardians.

“In general it appears that the region is struggling with limited resources for conservation, including lack of funding and lack of personnel for enforcement of existing regulations,” Jones said.

And while Talbot and Woods lobby TCI Governor Peter Beckingham to champion immediate changes to the fisheries legislation approved and agreed by local fishers more than a year ago, Jones echoes their aspirations: “It is our hope that ESA listing would make more US funding and personnel available for use by local conservation programmes,” she said.

ounis Khan’s epic, unbeaten 171 led Pakistan to their highest successful chase, the second highest in Asia for any side, and the sixth highest in all Test cricket. It also gave them their first series win in Sri Lanka since 2006, and catapulted them to third in the ICC Test rankings.

The feat required the highest fourth-innings partnership for Pakistan, 242 between Younis and Shan Masood, who fell on the fifth morning for 125. Misbah-ul-Haq arrived with 122 needed, saw off Sri Lanka’s

quicks till lunch, and opened up after that to reel off an unbeaten 59, finishing the match with a six.

Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers put in a spirited effort, especially with the second new ball, but could not break down Younis and Misbah.

‘Have a feeling USA will finish in the top two’ - Shahid USA’s squad may lack the experience and preparation that other teams have had coming into the 2015 World Twenty20 Qualifier, but they certainly aren’t lacking in confidence.

ast bowling spearhead Hammad Shahid told ESPNcricinfo, on the eve of the team’s opening match against Nepal, that he has no doubt USA will qualify for next year’s ICC World Twenty20 in India.

“We’re going to finish in the top two,” Shahid said. “We have a good young side with talented guys. We needed a young team from the last tournament but we didn’t have a young team.

That’s why we finished 15th out of 16, but this time we’re going to finish higher than that. It’s just my feeling. I haven’t played with this many young and talented guys in a while. We have a good chance to win the whole thing.”

USA finished runner-up to Canada in the ICC Americas Division One championship in May and their only

match since then was a five-wicket win in the warm-up against North West Warriors interprovincial side on Monday. Their subsequent warmup scheduled for Tuesday at Bready was washed out, denying the team much-needed match practice.

The newest member of the USA squad, Alex Amsterdam, only arrived in Belfast on Thursday morning after having trouble securing a visa while star batsman Steven Taylor pulled out two weeks ago after securing a Caribbean Premier League contract.

Shahid said that even though Taylor’s absence hurts the team, they have enough depth to make up for it.

“It does affect the team and the top order,” Shahid said. “He’s played here before and scored a lot of centuries.

The other guys are coming along nicely but missing Taylor is a big factor.

I think Adil Bhatti in the top order and Shiva Vashishat, they’ll be key to our run-scoring and taking over Taylor’s spot because they are hard-hitting batsmen and run between the wickets really well.”

Vashishat top-scored in USA’s successful chase against the Warriors with an unbeaten 30. According to Shahid, the former USA U-19 captain Vashishat has also lifted the fielding standards on his debut senior team tour and his presence in the outfield could

have a ripple effect on the squad.

“He makes a big difference. He’s quick and can stop a lot of boundaries, take good catches. He’s just quick and energetic in the field. In our warmup game, he took a brilliant catch on the boundary that stopped a six and it was one I don’t think a lot of people would have done. It’s a young side and I think our fielding is the main key of any tournament and we didn’t have a fielding side the last time we played in the qualifiers. This time I think our fielding will win us a couple of games.”

The biggest news in USA cricket over the last month was the ICC’s decision to suspend the USA Cricket Association for a third time in a decade.

However, unlike previous suspensions, the national teams have been allowed to continue competing at ICC tournaments for now. Shahid says the administrative issues have not caused any distractions to the squad and they are focused on performing well in Ireland.

“We don’t worry about the board.

We just worry about playing the game as hard as we can and getting to the World Cup. That’s our number one goal. I just want the fans to support us until the end. We’re going to do well and we’re going to make it to the World Cup.”

Root result trumps process

heck the scorebook.” That’s what they say. Grizzled old cricket watchers who see the game through life’s bitter disappointment. They’ve heard every story, every excuse, every couldabeen tale.

It doesn’t matter. The scorebook matters.

Modern cricketers and coaches tell us it is about the process. We shouldn’t judge on results. We shouldn’t focus on what happened at the end, but how they went about it.

In that sacred scorebook, Joe Root made 134. But his processes were all over the place.

First ball he found the smallest amount of bat to stop a ball that was hooping back in at him better than any David Warner punch. Second ball he was dropped from an outside edge that Brad Haddin simply didn’t understand. And even third ball he was close enough that there was a stifled appeal, but Root made it through that over.

But then, part of his process was also attacking Australia. He used flawless off-drives, sensuous cover-drives and forced off the backfoot whenever there was a chance. Sometimes, he cut hard, sometimes up and over, sometimes it was a guide, sometimes it was a crack. When he reached his 40s, his balls faced had still not caught his runs.

They were the glorious processes. It was counterattack, it was new England, it dragged England away from a bad day.

The sort of innings Kevin Pietersen would have played. Hope like hell you end up the day on the back of papers for the right reasons. Cover yourself in glory if you do well. Or cover yourself in something far worse if you fail.

Root’s innings was a constant battle between his best and worst. Every great shot would be followed by luck or confusion. Inside edges went between midwicket to the finest of fine legs. Pull shots off balls that advised him via their length not to pull them.

Joe Root was severe on anything short and wide but his innings was full of near-misses him, too far, coming in, going out. And so many half and three quarter shouts.

Even his 50 was part of this. The result was two runs, he raised his bat, the crowd said his name. But the process was a leading edge through cover that floated past the field, rather than to it.

After another inside edge near-calamity, Root moved across to sweep Lyon, Lyon was sure he was out LBW. The first replays of the review seemed to agree with him. But hawkeye and its mystical digital eye believed the ball pitched outside legstump. Lyon stopped believing in science as it remained not out.

At one stage Root was almost caught/ run out/stumped (Ian Bell probably would have found a way to be out all three ways), when he flicked off his pad, and it ricocheted off short leg’s shin pads. That was soon followed by

another huge shout, followed by huge disappointment for Lyon when he thought he had an inside edge, that he thought Steve Smith should catch, that turned out to be neither hit nor caught.

Yet, Root still had the ability, calm, and timing to stroke a ball through covers. To cut, guide and flick. At one stage he steered a ball through point so perfectly it was like he’d pre-mapped it with a protractor.

When Mitchell Starc finally took Root’s wicket, he didn’t do a jig, or even put his finger to his lips, he just exhaled a very deep breath.

Root was in control for three-quarters of the balls he faced, the tenth-lowest control in a Test hundred since 2009. Twenty different times Australia thought they had him, or a chance of him, or they hope that he would soon be gone. He kept his wick-

et by millimetres. But does that make it better, or worse? Was he lucky or brave? Was this an epic rearguard or a failure to fail. Was it a victory for positive intent, or just one of those days?

Root’s day in gif form would look like this: Australia throw their hands up, cover turns to pick up the ball from the boundary, the crowd yelling “ROOOOOOOT”, bowlers shaking their heads, the ball scooting through Australia’s haunted vacant point region, Australia dropping their heads, Root slapping another boundary and ultimately Root celebrating a hard earned, well received, incredibly important very lucky hundred while Warner didn’t clap him.

Root played and missed. Root made a hundred. England survived the day. Today, the result beat the process.

Kochi Tuskers seek IPL re-entry after winning arbitration A court-appointed arbitrator has asked the BCCI to pay Kochi Tuskers Kerala compensation of approximately Rs 550 crore ($87 million approximately) for terminating the franchise agreement in September 2011.

hile the IPL governing council is considering an appeal against the order, the owners of the Kochi franchise are believed to be seeking re-entry into the league as opposed to a cash award.

“We are in possession of the arbitrator Justice Lahoti’s report and a majority of the governing council members are in favour of appealing against it. We have sought an opinion from our legal team,”

IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said after the governing council’s meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Mukesh Patel, chairman of the Kochi Tuskers consortium, said he could not comment on the matter since he was out of town.

An appeal against an arbitration proceeding, which is usually agreed upon mutually by both the parties at the start, can be admitted by a high court if it feels

that one of the parties is hard done by the outcome. The BCCI feels it may have a case here since they had followed their rulebook while terminating the controversial Kochi franchise in 2011.

The order, issued by the former Chief Justice of India RC Lahoti, was issued last week. Although the order doesn’t make a mention of Kochi returning to the IPL umbrella, a BCCI insider revealed that the Kochi franchise owners have expressed their desire to feature in IPL again.

If the BCCI appeals against the arbitrator’s order and if the appeal is admitted in the high court, then the question of Kochi Tuskers playing the IPL again will not arise unless the dispute is resolved in court. If the BCCI’s appeal is dismissed, then the Kochi owners will have to file a

plea in the court should they wish to be a part of IPL again.

The Kochi franchise, which was controversially admitted into the IPL in 2010, made its debut in 2011. But an internal dispute among co-owners resulted in the franchise defaulting on submitting the 10% bank guarantee of the total franchise fee ahead of the season. The BCCI claimed that several reminders sent to the consortium didn’t elicit a response and, as a result, the franchise was terminated.

Although the Bombay High Court declined to stay the BCCI verdict two days after the franchise’s termination, the consortium then filed a plea objecting to the BCCI’s manner of ousting them from the IPL. It had led to both the parties agreeing on arbitration proceedings.
