MAPC conducts downtown Malden parking study

he Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) released a report of preliminary findings on a Malden Center Parking Study that highlights the needs and challenges facing local businesses, consumers and visitors to the downtown Malden area. The MAPC is the regional planning agency for cities and towns in Metro Boston and focuses on a number of issues, including land use, transportation and economic development. The study is being funded in part through a state grant and by the off-street parking program of the Malden Redevelopment Authority (MRA). With the number of transformative changes taking place in the downtown, including new developments and businesses, the study will be an essential tool to assist the city and the MRA to better understand how parking is currently being used in and around Malden Square. Parking patterns and capacity were examined, including parking lots, garages and on-street parking. Parking regulations, consistency and enforcement were also carefully studied. Additionally, an online survey encouraged residents, business owners, employees and visitors to identify their perceptions about parking, in-

cluding busiest times of day, and asked for their suggestions about potential solutions. The study will help Malden and MRA officials make decisions about the installation of on-street parking meters, the price of parking in garages and

parking lots, proper signage, and marketing as the area in and around Malden Square continues to be revitalized. A more comprehensive report of findings, data and recommendations will be issued at the end of the summer.

But it may be too early to tell if there will be a primary in any of the races pending certification of nomination papers by potential candidates, which are due in the Registrar of Voters Office on July 27, and the filing of certified nomination papers with the City Clerk’s Office on August 11. A preliminary race would be held, depending on the number of candidates, on September 22. Mayor Gary Christenson finds himself unopposed as there has been no indication of any candidate willing

to throw his hat in the ring. In the councillor-at-large race, incumbents David D’Arcangelo, Debbie DeMaria and Craig Spadafora could face School Committeeman Adam Weldai. In the ward races, incumbents without opposition are Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, Ward 5 Councillor Barbara Murphy, Ward 7 Councillor Neal Anderson and Ward 8 Councillor Jadeane Sica. So far, running without a challenger for the ward 2 seat being vacated by State Rep. Steve Ultrino is former Councillor Paul Condon; and for the vacant ward 4 seat are candidates former Councillor Jeffrey Donahue and Ryan O’Malley. Longtime Ward 4 Councillor Jim Nestor decided to not seek re-election. In ward 3, Council Presi-
