n Ocoee The Ocoee Fire Department was awarded a three-year grant of nearly $1.5 million from the Department

of Homeland Securityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s SAFER â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response â&#x20AC;&#x201D; grant program. The program assists departments with the funding of personnel to ensure that their communities have the needed fire and emergency services protection. The Ocoee Fire Department applied for the FEMA grant to hire 12 new firefighters to staff a fire engine in one of the fast-growing areas of the city. When hired, the personnel and fire apparatus will continue to respond from the temporary fire station, located at Ocoee-Apopka and West roads. The Ocoee City Commission approved building a new fire station in the northwest area of the city, and it is expected to be completed in the next 24 to 36 months.

The Dr. Phillips High School football team battled West Orange High School once again for the Ole Orange Crate, a longstanding rivalry between the two teams. DPHS senior quarterback BeSean McCray threw a careerhigh of 295 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to senior Davarius Bargnare, who caught three passes for a career-high of 135 yards. As a team, the Panthers racked up a school record of 592 yards of offense and won the game 44-24. Devodney Alford scored two of the touchdowns, and Brandon Fields got one in the end zone with a total game of three touchdowns for the Panthers.

The United States Tennis Association National Campus at Lake Nona hosted the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships for 14-under and 18-under. The championships serve as the crown jewel of the USTA Junior Team Tennis season, as the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top teams compete for a national title. It featured the top 32 teams from each age group and included hundreds of players from across the country, including Hawaii and the Caribbean. A first-grader at Holy Family Catholic School and resident of Summerport, James is currently ranked No. 11 in the 6-and-under age group for the U.S. Kids Golf Tour in the state of Florida, and he accomplished that while he was still age 5. James recently finished third in the Orlando U.S. Kids Summer Tour and took first place in the Jacksonville U.S. Kids Summer Tour. That win guarantees James a spot in the U.S. Kids World Championship that takes place at Pinehurst in August 2018. While his friends at HFCS think of him as a normal classmate, Principal Sister Dorothy Sayers has another view: “I like to think all of our students are special in their own way, but there’s no denying Jacob has come out swinging,” she said.

Sophomore Roxanne Deisseroth’s 22:22 earned her a 13th-place finish, and senior Hannah Waddell placed in the top 15 with a time of 22:37. Mako Robotic-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery For State-of-the-Art Hip & Knee Replacements

Would you believe that with the help of a robot and cutting-edge, 3-D computer software, you could have a perfect, custom-fit implant to revive and increase the longevity of your knees and hips? Among the various, quality orthopedic services at Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital is the Mako robotic armassisted orthopedic surgery from Stryker that is revolutionizing what can be achieved in the success rate of partial knee and hip replacement surgeries. There are five orthopedic surgeons at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital trained in the Mako robotic system, including Chief of Surgery Travis B. Van Dyke, M.D., and David A. Padden, M.D., one of the first surgeons to use the Mako system in Florida. The goal is to ensure that a partial knee or hip replacement, with a customized implant, will create less hospital time and stress on the patient through the combined forces of surgeon and robot.

Inside Mako’s Design The preparation for a partial knee or hip replacement surgery using the Mako robotic arm begins long before a patient is in the operating room. Initial meetings between the surgeon and the patient determine if the patient is a candidate for the Mako surgery through tests, symptoms/complaints and assessment of the patient’s previous treatments. From there, a CT scan is performed on the knee or hip to create an individualized virtual anatomic 3-D model used in surgery to help position the implant. The robotic arm is then brought along the patient’s bedside, where the surgeon uses the robot and burr

(rotary cutting tool) to remove the bone as designated by the mapping software.
