FRONTSTREET

by K Cannick

With a street campaign that even Obama would envy, 2013 belonged to Good Life Music’s Frontstreet. While his face may be new to many, this Atlanta native is no stranger to the industry. Signing with Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Records as a part of the group, The City Boys, Frontstreet received his first gold plaque at just 15 years old. Later taking a break from the music to focus on family, he made his resurgence into the industry as one of the pioneers of snap music. Working out of D4L studios, Frontstreet formed a close bond with Shawty Lo as well as other members of D4L and eventually helped shape the groups sound. Having penned records such as “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me”, “Bankhead”, “Cut the Check” and “Gettin Money” featuring Wiz Khalifa & Rocky Fontaine, Frontstreet has rocked stages alongside platinum selling artists including Rick Ross, Nelly, FloRida and many others.

and promotional engagements, he remains busy in the studio working on his forthcoming project. His current singles “All I Ever Wanted” and “Ray Allen” have garnered the attention of many DJ coalitions and can be found in rotation in clubs far beyond Atlanta.

Having accomplished goals that many independent artists only dream of, Frontstreet remains humble and focused on pressing forward to exceed his past achievements. Between performances

Balancing the demand of his fans and supporters with his desire to deliver the best project possible, he admits he’s in no rush to release the project. More than anything, he wants to ensure the people get the quality of music they deserve. With a strong team behind him, he expects to have it completed this spring in time for a scheduled promotional tour with other notable Atlanta acts. SWISHER SLEEP

The other side of Seattle’s Hip Hop Scene.

6 | Makin’ It Magazine

www.MakinItMag.com

Discovering music at 15 years old while serving a Juvenile Life sentence in Green Hill, Swisher Sleep was introduced to the music at an early age. Unfortunately for him, he was introduced to the streets at a much younger one. With a checkered past that probably closely resembles that of most young black men pursuing a career as a rapper, Swisher intimately knows the streets and the hustle. But unlike many aspiring artists with similar pasts, he doesn’t lean on it as a crutch. He doesn’t regale listeners with idle talk of violence and selling drugs. He doesn’t wear his incarceration or any part of his past as a badge of honor. Nor does he use it as a gimmick in an attempt to get ahead. Instead, when you press play on Swisher’s music you hear BARS. You hear passion. You hear the fine-tuned delivery and lyricism of a 15 year old kid who spent every bit of free time honing his skills as an emcee, literally writing himself a new future. Upon regaining his freedom, Swisher turned the same hustle and drive that got him incarcerated toward the music. Striking a delicate balance between recording and promoting, he’s amassed a healthy archive of records which he’s putting to good use. Not one to sit around cataloging music in hopes of landing a deal, he’s already released several successful projects selling well over 18,000 units cumulatively out the trunk. Campaigning in the trenches, he’s developed a genuine fan base that has him booked monthly for paid shows throughout the west coast and as far south as Texas. Commanding upwards of $2,500 a show, he’s looking to network with DJs and Promoters in new markets to expand his fan base and put together a possible promotional tour.

he looks forward to booking at least 40 dates. “My goal for this year was to do at least $100K from shows, music and merchandise, but after I sat down and went over my numbers from last year, I’m aiming to do $250k. And I know I can do it… Hell, I gotta do it. My son wants to go to Disney World!” As we discussed Seattle’s music scene and the success of Macklemore, Swisher explained, “I got a lot of respect for Macklemore. He’s put in a lot of work over the years and his success has brought a lot of attention to the city. There’s a light shining on our music scene that wasn’t there before, and we have a ton of great talent that’s ready for it. You got artist like Syko and Gift uh Gab. Then there’s Swindle and Church of Cetified out in Spokane, which is only 4 hours away, on the other side of Washington State. We got Mac Wayne, Jarve D, Nacho Picasso, Sam Iachow, Raz Samone and even John Silva with High Powered Entertainment who’s done a lot of production and engineering for me over the years. There are a few new acts that are bubbling too, but everyone I named is someone I recognize not only they talent, but their hustle and push to make a name for themselves. I’m proud to be from the same place as them, Straight up!”

“The great thing about not fitting in is you always stand out!” - Swisher Sleep

All of his hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed by the industry. Having performed at Summer Jam, Showcased for Sony reps and sat down with A&Rs from RocNation, he notes his biggest accomplishment was receiving a call from West Coast legend, E-40. Personally calling Swisher to commend him on his music and the work he was doing, he took time to also drop a few jewels about the game and how to stay prosperous. Over this next year, Swisher plans to release his next project Swisher Guts late first quarter and spend the next 12 months promoting it. He’s already planning to shoot videos for the singles “Nightmares” and “Slide Up on ‘Em”. Aiming to double his show dates for 2014,

Twitter & Instagram: @MakinItMag

Speaking with Swisher about his plans moving forward, he explained that his greatest area for improvement was online. Over the past years, he has been so focused on personally connecting with the people that he hasn’t been as diligent about his online presence. Now doubling back, he’s converting those real world fans into likes and follows on his various social networks. Putting an emphasis on further building his brand in 2014, Swisher is looking to add a publicist to his team. DJ MALONE by D Banks

P. SANDERS by B Walker

At just 19 years old, P Sanders is already on a trajectory to be the Next Big Thing in Hip-Hop Music. A quick look at his social networks reveals more than 200,000 followers on Twitter and another 130,000 on Instagram (numbers that by themselves would be questionable if not for the shear level of fan engagement). With his every Instagram post receiving THOUSANDS of LIKES and HUNDREDS of COMMENTS within a matter of hours from rabid fans, there’s no questioning that he’s the real deal. He’s achieved this level of success as a white rapper by being authentic, both to the art and to himself. Hip Hop is a culture, one that has become almost synonymous with baggy clothes, sagging pants and a gangster lifestyle. But Hip Hop is also a genre of music. Never getting the two confused, he’s able to entrench himself in the art and retaining a healthy respect for the culture without losing his own identity. He’s a normal, white, teenage boy from Atlanta who loves sports, music and girls, and that’s exactly what you get from his music. There’s no embellishment and nothing sounds forced; just great music from someone

who’s both a student and a fan of Hip Hop. Sitting with his manager, Aaron “AP” Phillips, I can say I was truly impressed as he played through the catalog. Hearing P do everything from flip classic Biggie records to delivering Bay-area style club joints, his delivery and songwriting ability is consistent on whatever track is put before him. Tackling authentic subject matter, his most recent single “Fallen Soldiers” pays homage to our troops and helps bring awareness to the loved ones they’ve left behind. Fusing broader relatable themes and upbeat production with core hip hop fundamentals, he’s carved out his own unique style which many have referred to as Hip-Pop. Preparing to shoot the video for his next single, he’s been busy in the studio cooking up new material and out on the circuit packing out rooms across the country for both Meet & Greets and his live acoustic shows. With everything that’s coming down the pipeline, P Sanders is already what many would call Independently Major. For more information, booking or press inquiries contact ap3.dmg@gmail.com

Since we last checked in with DJ Malone, the Chicago mixtape specialist’s demand has been on a steady increase. His recent mixtape release, “Mo City Takeover” quickly shot up to 20,000 downloads on Datpiff, gaining him even more attention. Now pulling in up to $500 for mixtape hosting, he still prides himself on working with the best independent acts he can find. Having just celebrated the two year anniversary of his online

radio show, Malone’s Hotline, DJ Malone is preparing to collaborate with Makin’ It Magazine on another volume of his successful New Land mixtape series. One fourth of the up-andcoming group, STAMP GANG, PPaul doesn’t allow Little Rock’s lack of industry presence to prevent him from delivering industry quality records. With hard hitting singles like “20s, 50s, 100s”, the project promises us a glimpse of what to expect from Paris’ forthcoming, first solo effort, “Parismatic”. HOW WHITE BOYS STOLE RAP 16 | Makin’ It Magazine

www.MakinItMag.com

“How the %@$# did Macklemore just win for BEST Hip Hop Album over Jay-Z AND Kendrick Lamar?” - The Internet The night of the American Music Awards, my social media timelines exploded with hundreds of comments expressing this general sentiment. This anger was only compounded by the fact that he took the ONLY two awards that evening in the Hip Hop category. I could only sit back and watch as social media conversations quickly jumped to music industry conspiracies and the fact that white people are taking over hip hop, a growing undertone spurred by the success of artists like MGK, Ke$ha and Mac Miller. Earlier last year, Scarface further crystallized this school of thought when he professed that in 25 years the face of hip hop will be white, alluding to the similar fates of Jazz, Blues and Rock & Roll. While his comments inspired a lot of conversations and blogs, I believe many still found it hard to believe that such a thing could even be possible with hip hop (Until the AMAs at least). So are white boys taking over hip hop? [insert dramatic pause here] Yes, Yes they are. Lets just look at the facts. There are over 309 Million people in the United States. 224 Million of which are white (72%) and 39 Million are black (12%). The AMAs select nominees based on an amalgam [mixture] of different things (Sales, Radio Play, Social Media, Youtube Views, etc). The winners are selected based on a poll of music buyers and the general public. Generally speaking, the public is white (72% to be exact) and it’s pretty safe to say that percentage is higher for retail music buyers. So while many blasted Macklemore for his AMA wins, those same people failed to acknowledge the awards he received were for FAVORITE Hip Hop Album and Artist,

not BEST. And based on the numbers, lets just assume that Macklemore got the white vote in much the same way Obama got the black vote (Hey he looks like me. I can relate to that). We can all agree that record labels aren’t finding and cultivating talent anymore. They are merely fulfillment houses that pluck music (that has proven to be a safe investment) from the independent scene and plugs it into their system for generating money. So the idea of a cabal [small group of individuals working together for a larger common goal] dedicating time, energy and resources in an effort to take hip hop away from black people seems a bit far fetched. I will however concede that there is one devoting time, energy, and resources into maximizing their own return on investment at ANY cost. So if a white rapper can be more profitable (based on demographics), then tell me where you would expect them to invest THEIR money? The idea that there is malevolent presence in the industry that is just seeking to destroy black people and rob them of their music is cartoonish (like a super-villain trying to destroy the WHOLE universe). Everything comes down to money. Slavery wasn’t about a hatred of Africans; it was about money (people working and not getting any). Racism was a bi-product of that slavery (de-humanizing the people enslaved to reconcile the atrocities committed with deeply held religious and social principles). The true enemy of black rappers, is black rappers (and I’m not even referring to the beefs and violence).

In general, Black rappers only make music for black people. You disagree? Then you must think it’s fine for white people to use the N word. Ohhh…. you don’t? Well you’re deceiving yourself if you think you’re making music for everyone while simultaneously telling 72% of them that they can’t sing along. That’s like legalizing the recreational use of marijuana but not the growing, selling or distribution of it (WTF?). Black rappers have marginalized themselves. Hip hop has slowly regressed from rapping about issues to rapping about topics, to now just rapping to fill bars between choruses. This is a cultural issue within the black community, not the music industry. The “White, Jewish Label Heads” aren’t trolling the hoods of Atlanta listening to demo tapes. They are signing the acts that the hoods have cosigned as safer investments through independent sales and consistent booking. Unfortunately, the music today’s black consumers support is disproportionately ratchet to the point of being unable to crossover into broader (whiter) audiences. You can’t simultaneously claim that hip hop is a culture that has united a generation of people from across the spectrum of race, religion, nationality and sex, while also maintaining that its sole stuarts should be black. If it’s acceptable for white people to be fans of the music (purchasing CDs and concert tickets), then it is equally acceptable for them to be artists. Otherwise, you might as well say white rappers are only three-fifths of an Emcee.

TOMMY GUNNA by K Cannick

“For me, it all started when I was a youngster watching my dad and uncles performing for the block parties in Minneapolis. I knew then, that music was what I wanted to do and that nothing was going to stop me from reaching my goals. I first started experimenting with rapping when I was about 13. It was me and my little brothers, Dedo G and Lil Rod. One of the homeboys from the hood showed us the ins and outs of freestyling. Next thing you know, I’m in the cafeteria of Kankakee Junior High freestyling for lunch money. Outside of music though, there wasn’t much to do in Kankakee but get into trouble. After getting jumped and nearly killed behind gang related activity, my father thought it would be best for me to go stay with my cousins in Eau Claire, WI. It was a tough adjustment but it was great to be around my cousins who were far more advanced on the music shit than I was. I soaked it all up like a sponge and hit the ground running. Now I’m out here with my Throttle Clan fam and we ready to dominate the game.” Tommy “Gunna” Watkins Twitter & Instagram: @MakinItMag
