“Prodigy” would have to be the word that I’d use to describe Cooper McGill, the 15 year old Canadian who recently relocated to Atlanta to pursue his dream of becoming a Grammy award winning producer. Having just secured his first major placement (“Buy It, Upgrade It”) on the upcoming Too Short project, he has been making tremendous strides in a relatively short amount of time.

Excelling both academically and musically, Coop plans to complete his High School education by age sixteen so that he will have more time to devote to his musical endeavors.

In addition to pursuing placements Coop has been working closely with singer/songwriter D. Brown (former American Idol contestant) out of his private studio, located in Atlanta’s Artist Factory.

Zaytoven

By K. Cannick

Many of you may be most familiar with Super-producer Xavier “Zaytoven” Dotson from his many hit records with Atlanta’s own Gucci Mane but this one of a kind talent has been quietly on his grind for over a decade. A military child born in Germany, Zaytoven lived all over the world before his family finally settled down in California. Getting his start playing the church organ, Zaytoven soon mastered playing the guitar, drums and piano by ear. After high school his family relocated to Georgia but Zaytoven stayed behind a while to pursue his music working with artist JT the Bigga Figga before eventually following down to Georgia. Enrolling in barber school Zaytoven would be introduced to Gucci Mane through a fellow student. The two had an immediate connection and www.MakinItMag.com

undeniable work chemistry scoring big in 2005 with Gucci Mane’s hit single “So Icy” featuring Young Jeezy, which peaked at #23 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks chart. Working closely with Gucci, Zaytoven went on to work with many popular southern artists, such as OJ Da Juiceman, Yung LA, Yung Ralph, Gorilla Zoe and recent placements on R&B Grammy winner Usher’s upcoming album as well as Brandon & Brian Casey of Jagged Edge. With all the success that Zaytoven has attained he continues to reach back and help independent artists offering track bundles affordably priced up and coming artists on his website, ZaytovenBeats.com.

K-Digga

By K. Cannick

The music business is not for the timid or the weak hearted. If you want to succeed in this industry you’ve got to be bold and ready to take what’s yours. These days, it seems like everybody with a computer and the right software got an album coming soon. But it takes more than just music. It takes drive, ambition, faith, work and dedication. These are all qualities that you’ll find in K-Digga, Lead artist and CEO of R.E.D.I. Entertainment. In an industry overrun with people gambling on a dream, it’s refreshing to see artists like K-Digga, who actually invest into their careers. Patiently putting the pieces together, he has been assembling his team. With artists like Breezy and Dr. Jekyll, a versatile production powerhouse, KDigga is already off to a strong start. Born & Raised in Talladega, Alabama, K-Digga began rapping in High School. While he enjoyed it and always had a desire to be in the entertainment industry, he never took rapping that serious. With his natural hustle and leadership skills, he saw himself more fit for the role of a CEO. It wasn’t until years later when managing his first group out of Tampa, Florida that K-Digga would realize his place as an artist. After featuring on one of the groups songs Digga began to rethink his stance on being an artist after all of the positive feedback he received from the record. In just two years K-Digga has accomplished more than many artists have in their career, currently workwww.MakinItMag.com

ing on the third installment of his “Str8 Drop” Mixtape series, he has two singles in the streets “Trunk” featuring Gucci Mane and “Its Like That” featuring Yo Gotti, which recently began receiving radio play on select stations. Tapping in to his industry connections K-Digga has worked with Zaytoven, Shawty Red, Rocko Da Don, Project Pat and looks forward to soon adding Scarface and Drumma Boi to that list. Speaking on the state of hip hop, K-Digga expressed his frustration with the lack of authenticity in the game today. As he put it, He’d rather sound good saying “SOMETHING” than just saying something to sound good. So while other artists are trying to live the life they rap about he just raps about the life he’s lived. I think this is the key to the following he’s built with his fans. As he plans out the 4th quarter release of his Album, Mr. Alabama, K-Digga anticipates the biggest obstacle of the release to be unifying his home state. With so much talent in Montgomery, Birmingham, Talladega, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and just spread out through the whole state, he feels there’s too much division in the music scene. This is why he is going so hard with this project. It’s not just about K-Digga and RED-I Entertainment, it’s about BAMA Pride. He wants to step out strong and show not just the industry but the world what Alabama has to offer. For booking, info or business inquiries contact kdiggafan@gmail.com or call 770.485.9147 9

MZ. Nicky By K. Cannick

Since the age of ten Mz. Nicky has always had a unique talent for poetry and music. Battling with the acceptance of losing her father and learning how to express her self she began writing her feelings down and channeling her anger in the form of Poetry and Music. Mz. Nicky has been awarded as Legend of The Stage and through her poetic abilities and writing skillz she returned to school and later published a book entitled “Skin Deep” in 2006 She began rapping but really did not know she had a gift for music, just basically doing it as a hobby. Her inspirations in life were the female pioneers in rap, for example Mia X, Da Brat and Shawnna. Mz. Nicky had a vision that she wanted to be able to take care of her family like her Father but with a different approach. She inherited her Mother’s wisdom on life and humbleness and her Father’s hustler mentality and steered herself in a more positive direction, which was the music. 10

As she has gotten older her lyrical abilities have drastically caught the eyes of many people and her swag is like no other female artist. Mz. Nicky is often compared to her childhood idol Mia X and a female version of Lil Wayne. She enjoys the thrill of being on stage in front of a crowd, Performing and opening for major artist like Juvenile, Yo Gotti, Roxy And Terrance(106 & Park) and performing at over thirty venues in her first year in and around the Cincinnati Tri-State area. She is receiving great reviews about her music and performances; she works hard on improving to make each performance unique. With the feedback she has received it has inspired her more and made her want to become a star more than ever before. This is her lifetime dream and destiny Mz. Nicky is determined to be a star. Tank Dizzle

William Taylor (born September 3, 1982 in Birmingham, AL) is better known as Tank Dizzle, a nickname given to him by his grandmother for being a hard hitter on the football field. An American rapper and songwriter, this heavy hitter in the rap game was raised in the Atlanta suburb of College Park, GA. He was very athletic growing up, involved in everything from gymnastics to swimming to football. Although quiet by nature, he was known to be wild when the situation warranted. Putting his best effort into any and everything he works for, his grandmother’s words of “Put God First” still rings in his ears and influences his lyrics. Committed to living life on his own terms, Tank has been an

artist all his life. From writing lyrics at the age of 9 to custom painting 18-wheelers, a love he shares with his father, to aspirations of the big screen, Tank is guaranteed to crush whatever he touches. With influences ranging from Tupac to Easy E he describes his work as versatile with a positive tilt that’s sure to reach many audiences. Tank has already been receiving a great response from records like “Exotic” and his current single “Go Ham” generating a notable following overseas, especially in key European markets. Never content he continues to seek opportunities to further expand his fan base here in the states by connecting with DJs and Promoters in

all markets. Aiming high with his career goals his work ethic keeps him focus. While many other artists make excuses he’s to busy making the neccesarry adjustments to succeed. Backed by a strong partner Detria-D, founder and CEO of Master Mind Enterprises and MasterMind Records, Tank is poised to make his impact on the game in a big way. Online branding One of my marketing snafu pet peeves is when I hear an artist in an interview or on stage being asked how the public can contact them and they start by saying Myspace.com forward slash Yada Yada Yah - SMH. The branding opportunity missed by shouting your Myspace page is Huge! Trust me, Myspace has enough money to handle their own brand promotion without your help. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting Myspace down. I think Myspace is a wonderful tool to showcase your music and information. Especially when you’re first starting out. Yes Myspace has lost some of it’s social network appeal as the newness has worn, but ounce for ounce pound for pound, it’s one of the easiest ways to get your music and information up and out. And quiet as kept, they still are in the top 10 trafficked websites on earth. So

www.MakinItMag.com

when people say Myspace is dead, trust me their not talking about the traffic generated to the site. Where else can you go and potentially reach millions of fans? Facebook? I rest my case. Branding is the art of promoting your own brand, your own identity, the tradename of your product or service. So when you promote Myspace, not only do you miss branding ops, but you miss the opportunity to drive traffic to your own domain name. Why is this important? Well, let’s say for instance that you decide to take your Myspace page down, or it’s hacked or let’s say Myspace changes their music policy? Think of the people who now don’t know how to find you. An option to all of this is obtaining your own domain name. Your own www. online real estate. Depending on

where you go to purchase your domain, a .com address will run you about $10.00 per year. On the other hand a .info domain extension can cost you as little as .89. You can then take your domain name and forward it to your Myspace page similar to forwarding your phone to another number. I recommend using Go Daddy as your domain registrar. Go Daddy is easy to use and their dashboard makes it really simple to forward the doman and with masking. Masking allows you to mask the domain you’re forwarding to with your own domain name. So you’re on Myspace, but it says your domain name. Branding accomplished.

You must learn to integrate your online presence. Your Twitter page should point people to your Myspace and FB pages and vice versa. The more pages that you have that point to one another the more important the search engines perceive you. The more important you are in Search engines the easier it is for someone to find your brand! Until the next time, Happy Marketing -Chuck Woo appears courtesy of www.chuckwoo.com www.onlinemarketingtools.net www.earwaxrecords.com

Being successful online is about doing a number of small things and branding your identity is one of them. Ideally, you should have your own website in addition to a Myspace page.

DJ Ace By K. Cannick

Holding down the southeast side of Atlanta DJ Ace has built a loyal following in the streets as well as strong relationships with some of the A-town’s biggest names. With over 13 years in the industry, Ace has played a role in breaking artists such as Yung Ralph, Gucci Mane, Alley Boy and a host of others. Talking with Ace, you will quickly realize his passion for the game and his disgust with DJs who just hop on the coattails of any artist with a buzz instead of getting behind them early on and helping create that buzz. Ace’s code and work ethic have earned him a strong reputation in the streets for being one of the few DJs who will get out in the trenches alongside the artist, promoting the project, setting up shows, making connections and putting it in the people’s face. Ace explains that he’s comfortable doing this because he doesn’t just work with any artist. If you want hime to be involved with a project the music has to be up to par. For him it’s not just about a check. It’s about accomplishing a goal. “Artists come to me from these streets and they looking for a another way of living. That’s why I go in like I do. It’s about the personal relationships more than anything.”

Reflecting back on the last 13 years, Ace talks about how he first started out promoting High School parties at the skating rinks and his time running with Kizzy Rock, Raheem the Dream and DJ smurf all the way to him having managed Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman. As he moved on to Promoting Bigger and Bigger Shows including those with Ying Yang Twins, Pastor Troy, TI & PSC and Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy it was only natural that his next step would be club ownership. So in 2007, after coming off the road with Gucci Mane, Ace and a long time friend partnered to purchase Club J Pauls, the first 21 and up club that Ace ever spun at. As co-owner of the Gate, Ace has spent the past 3 years do ing what he has always done, breaking records. Combining his mixtape following with club crowd and a venue to book shows for artists he has been providing a platform for new artists to really reach potential fans and get their name out in these streets. “A light-skinned African American with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,” these are the words I heard echoing from CNN as I sat down to work on our Drake cover story. It was Monday morning and the news had just broken about comments made by Senator Harry Reid during the 2008 Democratic Primaries when describing why he thought America was ready to embrace, then Senator, Barrack Obama as the first black president. Staring at pictures of Drake as I listened to the story I began to notice the similarities in both Drake and Obamas story. Both seemingly came out of nowhere to claim the top spot in their respective fields. Both embraced technology using the internet to promote, building strong grass roots campaigns with a huge followings on college campuses. Both arrived at a point in time when the game was at its worse and people were waiting for a change. And as I sat listening to CNN I couldn’t help but notice that like Obama, Drake is “light skinned” and having been raised by his white Jewish mother in an affluent area

@TatumThePhotog Tatum Forbes, ATL

of Toronto, has limited “Negro Dialect” (unless he wants to have one). Reflecting on that last similarity I began to question the role of race in the entertainment industry. When you look back on a history of black firsts such as Vanessa Williams being the first black woman to win the Miss America Pageant or Halle Berry being the first black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress, you can’t help but notice that they are mixed. Seeing as how white people account for a majority of the population and make up the majority of the hip hop consumer base I went to my twitter followers to ask, “How do you feel skin tone or race in general affects the success of an artist?”

Below are just a few of the responses we received. If you want to make your opinions heard join the conversation at www.MakinItMag.com

For men I don’t think skin tone effects their popularity that much. The “so called” best rapper with the most sales in the world looks something like a gremlin and is dark complected. And if skin tone mattered or looks in general for that matter I doubt he would have gotten very far in his career. I think as far as crossing over though it IS easier for “urban artist” who are of lighter complexion to grab a white audience. White people might feel less threatened by them.. maybe. Well thats my two cents. xo Tatum

himself with Lil Wayne and Young Money and opening many of his songs on his mixtape with referencing how high he is. If anything, Drake can be argued to represent a perfect black masculinity as the Obama of Hip Hop because he can codeswitch with the best of them. It is no surprise (or shouldn’t be) that black performers in hip hop live in two extremities – either OVER masculinated (the thug, the ‘bad nigga’ if you will) or not threatening at all. Outside of business aspects of the industry, Drake is so successful because he resides in a gray area of identity where he uses his “mulatto” status to achieve what those who live within in the extremities of black masculinity can’t – acceptance not only as a performer but as a human being as well.

@RedClayScholar Regina Barnett, ATL

@IAmBreakBread AV from that BBE

Interesting take on Drake. I’ve been playing around with idea of Drake’s success for a minute and I think you may have given me an angle. I dont think skintone really has ANYthing to do with the success of a performer or not. The key to his success is Drake’s understanding, performance, and catering to one’s audience. What Drake masterfully does is “flip-flop” (pun intended) into whatever class or racial space he is forced into. He can go from EXTREMELY non-threatening (the dude was on DeGrassi for God’s sake) to trying to stunt a concevied “Hip Hop” masculinity by affiliating

www.MakinItMag.com

The color aesthetic that continues to dominate our culture has more to do with the way we are perceived by the public than some of us want to acknowledge. Because the majority of the world, even countries with brown skin people, have lighter tones, there is more of acceptance of the lighter skin Blacks from a world perspective. When people aren’t intimidated by you, regardless of their reason and rationale, they are more likely to embrace you. On that same note, Drake is a rapper with a mixtape and compilation album. He has positioned himself with a team that has

dominated the airwaves for at least the last five years, and has a management team to keep him visible. So there are many other factors that play into his success outside of his skin color. However, with a mixtape and a buzz you dont deserve comparisons to the leader of the free world. I’m sorry.

@DJKingSpin DJ King $pin, ATL

unlike “obama” drake is under an actual “negro” aka lil wayne who is under another negro aka “birdman”. Although they both seemed amazing @ first and seemed 2 just come out of nowhere we all know that they both have been working 4 years in their respective fields and were not known to the public because they were not in the public eye. I myself had never heard of John McCain either until he ran for election. But as with every trend in the record business it will seem as if his dialect and skin color will have everything to do with his success when in fact it’s just the fact that he’s a new artist under a bigger artist that has more to do with his success than anything else. There are thousands of artists that come out everyday with no accent from light to white skinned but because they do not have the marketing machine behind them they aren’t as exposed as a drake is to the public. So to say that his skin color and dialect has anything to do with his success would be asinine!.

Sparkz

By K. Cannick

Dead for One minute and Thirty Seven seconds, from a near fatal car accident while being airlifted to a local hospital in California, Zu, an up and coming artist, was given a second chance at life and through his artist Sparkz a second chance at his dreams. Sitting across from Sparkz in their hotel room discussing the music industry, I can’t help but notice his confidence as he speaks on his career aspirations. While many Cali artists are obsessed with bringing the “West Back” Sparkz has set his goal much higher as he Talks about rejuvenating the game. 360 Deals “I’m an independent R&B Artist. I’ve been putting in a lot of work over the past three years consistantly building up my buzz and now I have a few deals on the table. Everybody is telling me that I’m going to have to sign a 360 deal. I hear a lot of people talk about 360 Deals and its never anything positive but I personally don’t know what the term means. What is a “360” Deal and How will it affect my career long term If I choose to go that route?” -Tony Hey Tony, That is a very good question and also an important one these days. Most industry people that I speak with have no idea of the 360 deal concept. 360 deals have become increasingly popular amongst major/independent Record Labels. Due to the declining record sales (recession)….Record Companies have been scrambling for quite a while now to find a way

20

to recoup funds used to market, promote and release an artist’s album (yes I still use that word.) “360 deals”/ “multiple rights deals”/”ancillary rights”/ “nonrecording income” deals are contracts that allow a record company to receive a percentage of income from an Artist, in relation to activities pertaining to the entertainment industry as a whole. Now record companies may receive a portion of in-

come from ventures that used to go solely to the Artist such as: * Touring revenue * Merchandise sales * Endorsement deals * Ringtone income * Movies The industry has changed and the labels are changing their business models to go along with it. Record Labels look at it like this--- most Artist will not be given the opportunites (touring/mechandising/author/ actor) without the fact that they have became popular because of their status as an recording Artist. How did the Artist become popular???- through the marketing and promotion work of the Record Label. Yes- this seems unfair but most labels say in exchange for these rights- they will commit to promoting the Artist at longer lengths and will try to develop

opportunities for them to make money. Does this look familiar- Yes- some industry insiders have compared this to the role of the manager- in which the label is focusing on the Artist’s entire career instead of just the record sales. So if you are an up and coming Artist and are looking to get signed by a major/independent Record Label, be prepared to give up those rights. My advicebefore you sign to any Record Label, have an Entertainment Attorney look over your contract in order to make sure that your rights are fully protected. -TiQuisha Tobin, Esq. Producer Panel

How to Sell more Beats If you’re a producer and you’re not making any money then you need do one of two things: Stop Producing or Change the way you think. Personally, I’ve always been confused by the number of Producers that I meet who complain about not making enough money selling beats or even worse, not making any money at all, especially, when I hear so many artists rapping and singing over industry tracks because they don’t have any beats of their own. As a producer, you are in a better position than anyone else in the industry to make money. The #1 thing that’s stopping you is YOU. In this article I will go over the three deadly sins responsible for killing the careers of many producer before they even began

Sin 1: CHEAPNESS – As the publisher of Makin’ it Magazine I can count on one hand the number of producers that have ever purchased an ad from us in the 3 Years that we’ve been in business. Of those producers, every single one connected with new clients and made money selling beats. What amazes me about the situation is how artists can invest so much money in beats, studio time, CDs, Flyers, Posters, Radio Promo, Videos, Showcases, etc. in hopes of one

day, possibly, down the line making some of that money back but a producer, who makes his money up front from the sell or lease of the beat, won’t spend $50 to promote his own career and reach new clients. There are no excuses for you not to advertise or have business cards, flyers and your own website. Being cheap keeps you broke. Sin 2: GREED – You can’t have all the money. Your biggest opportunity to see some real money in this new industry is through publishing. That publishing money comes from sources like radio, television and film licensing. Too often producers get greedy when they see a record that they’ve produce begin to grow legs. Asking for ridiculously high advances because you think a song is about to blow will most likely lead to one of these three outcomes: 1) They kill the song and run with another single, You lose! 2) They get someone else to do a new beat for the record & You Lose! 3) They pay you the money and you severely hinder the promotion of the project & you think you win but in actuality you still lose! That $5,000 advance you’re asking for could’ve gotten radio spins or any number of other things that would’ve contributed to the

overall success on the record leading to bigger money on the back end. Sin 3: ARROGANCE – Don’t ever make the mistake that your beat is a complete song. At the end of the day you need artists just as bad as they need you. Quit pricing tracks based on your opinion of your own music and start pricing them based on your accomplishments. Why are you asking for $1,000 for a beat when you’ve never had a major placement, a song on the radio, placement on a mixtape or even sold a beat for that matter. The truth is your beats probably aren’t as hot as you think they are and even if they are, you don’t have a monopoly on hot tracks. There are thousands of other producers out there that will happily take the money you’re leaving on the table by charging too much. Eliminating these three sins is the first step to making more money selling beats. In our next article we will talk about a few fundamental changes you can make to the way you approach selling beats that will help you sale. Until then make sure you log on to www.MakinItMag.com and check out our other articles.

The name 325 stems from an address where a band of friends would gather for afterschool freestyle sessions. Over time this shared passion turned into a movement taking Hip Hop back to its roots. The goal has always been to have fun making music and incorporating a variety of themes spanning from classic hip-hop to video game fusion. Now on their 4th release this camp is looking to further expand their fan base by connecting with DJs and others who appreciate the type of music they create.
