THEME1 the school

A. PLAN The structure of the second level (i.e. the main classroom) is presented in plan.

B.1. SECTION The section demonstrates the school’s symmetrical structure with its triangular frame, its three stories and the floating platform.

FUN FACT: The architects were considering a circle or a rectangle for the building’s shape. However, a triangle seemed to fit best as it is the most stable form for floating on

FUN FACT: The building served as a primary school but also as a community center and tourist attraction.

B.2. ELEVATION The elevation exhibits the school’s facade, composed of a wooden frame with horizontal hardwood beams and the roof, made of aluminum.

C. AXONOMETRIC The axonometric is presented as an isometric drawing.

The surrounding context (i.e. the Lagos lagoon’s waters) is represented by a hatch. This emphasizes the ‘‘isolation of the structure’’.

FUN FACT: NLÉ architect Kunlé Adeyemi came up with the idea of ‘‘floating island’’ to overcome the problem of floodings in Makoko.

D. RENDER

The render reveals a perspective of the school’s interior from the first floor. It highlights the use of wood in the building’s construction, along with its open structure.

THEME2 the collapse

The structure was quickly built and had some minor problems which made it more vulnerable to such conditions. The wind from the rainstorm hit the weakest points which led to the structure deteriorating.

A. CONDITIONS In Makoko, at 9:52 am on June 7th 2016, after a joint broke in the structure, there was a rainstorm that caused the Makoko Floating School to collapse with only its roof intact.

s

B. INVESTIGATION PROCESS We exploded our axonometric drawing and placed bounding boxes and meshes around each part. We used kangaroo to create a script that would apply gravity to these individual components and allow them to physically collapse onto a solid plane.

C. COLLAPSE INVESTIGATIVE DRAWING The symmetrical structure is represented through the mirrored parts that are arrayed downwards, until it scatters into pieces, imitating the most destructed parts of the school.

The blue roof is the only piece that stayed intact. Everything else is shown in an exploded axonometric view with the chairs on the classroom floor to see the original building and be aware of its program before and after the events occurred.

D. TO REMEMBER : Makoko Floating School was built in 2012 Nigeria by NLÉ architects in the Makoko neighbourhood of Lagos, Nigeria.

The structure stands on floaters, on the water, emulating how many habitations in Makoko are constructed. The school was constructed as an attempt to help and provide education for the community in Makoko.

The structure is triangular in elevation, and is made only out of wood. However, it collapsed due to poor maintenace followed by heavy rainstorm and winds.
