E
ver wonder where mankind is going as a species? Read one or both of these two books: Makers: The New Industrial Revolution by Wired founder Chris Andersen and Program or be Programmed by Douglas Rushkoff. Both books make cohesive and concise arguments as to why everyone should understand the technology around them more expertly, and what the opportunities of doing so are. At the heart of both books is the idea that over the last two decades, technology has turned humans from creators into consumers. Our cars are built by robots, our shopping habits designed by algorithm. Other changes though include the ease with which anyone can build a phone app or a robot thanks to easily available programming tools and low cost hardware like Arduino boards and desktop 3D printers. Welcome to the life of the Maker, a culture that’s sweeping the planet and aside from putting complex robotics into the hands of artists, is also seeing engineers and hobbiests applying their skills to new challenges like distance learning or air quality. Here in Africa, Maker culture is already celebrated in the network of makerspaces
6 STUDENTBRANDS.CO.ZA Issue 2 2015
(you can find out more about these at makers.htxt.co.za) spread across the country, and at the Maker Faire Africa events held recently in Johannesburg and planned for August in Cape Town. Universities are getting in on the act too. The University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria have both recently opened Makerspaces where anyone - regardless of their educational background - can test out their ideas, that could revolutionise the world, on 3D printers and scanners. “It’s about teaching people to create stuff and not simply consume,” says Dennis Kriel, who helped design UP’s Makerspace in its library. “My son of ten recently discovered that rather than spending his pocket money, he can [design and] 3D print new Hero Factory weapons. He already has the mindshift that he is not just a consumer, but a creator too.” “We want students with maker characteristics to come together to learn,” he continues, “People who are willing to change the world for the better.” Noble causes. But how far are we, and more importantly, where does South Africa rank?

3D LED Tetris
As if we needed more proof that humans love playing games, one of the first things Vaal Triangle Makers from Binary Space put together was this giant LED game inspired by Tetris. Tethered to an old Atari controller and hooked up to an Arduino board and a bunch of RGB lights with laser cut plastic, this will surely secure your spot as King of the Hipsters.

Ever wonder where the Southern Cross really is or which directizon to look for Betegeuse? A team of UCT students did, so they built this star-finding laser pointer which can be programmed from your PC.

Extruder
A low cost, open source controller board that sits at the heart of many Maker projects. Uses a low power ARM processor and is easier to wire than a lamp during load shedding.
A credit card sized computer capable of running Linux. Often seen in homemade streaming media gadgets. The fact that it costs less than R500 is just gravy.
Most desktop 3D printers work by pushing thin strings of plastic through a red hot “extruder”. The extruder squirts out plastic in layers and is moved by motors.

Quentin Harley’s unusual RepRap Morgan mounts the print head on a SCARA arm mechanism, which makes Morgan lighter and faster than other printers. Morgan won the Gada Prize for Innovation as it’s capable of printing more of its own parts than other printers.
Gauteng carpenter Richard van As won international acclaim when he designed a 3D printed hand that can be used for low cost prosthetics. His RoboBeast printer is incredibly strong and built to print RoboHands in extreme conditions such as war zones and refugee camps.

OPEN SOURCE It’s not the biggest 3D printer in the world, but it’s not far off. Cheetah 3 is about the size of a garage and can print largescale models at high speeds for low cost industrial prototyping. So far, inventor Hans Fouche has printed a working lawn mower and a vacuum cleaner. 8 STUDENTBRANDS.CO.ZA Issue 2 2015
Most desktop 3D printers are based on open source designs produced as part of the RepRap project which seeks to build a 3D printer that can print itself. The first RepRap printer was started at the University of Bath in the UK a decade ago. Find out more at reprap.org

kick-ass tips to start ht your career off rigyou
Give yourself the best chances of success as start your journey towards CEO of earth Pictures CC by 2.0 flazingo.com
H
aving a plan for your career isn’t just a good idea, it shows that you’re serious about your future and have set very definite, particular goals that you plan to reach by the time you hit retirement age.
There are a number of ways that these plans can be thrown off course and your career path negatively affected. We’ve compiled below eight essential boxes to check to ensure that you’re the envy of all your friends at your 10-year high school reunion.
VISIT THE UNI CAREER PLANNING CENTRE.
FETCH COFFEE AS AN INTERN
You’re not going to get any better advice from us than you are from the pros at your University, so our first piece of wisdom is: book an appointment and get your questions ready. Every University has a career planning centre in one form or another with online help available at sites like UCTs Centre for Higher Education. Visit them: http://ow.ly/KtnnU WITS’ Counseling and Careers Development Unit even has an online Career Planning Tool at: http://ow.ly/Ktn3l
Ask any post-Graduate or worker bee and they will immediately stress the importance of practical knowledge over theoretical studying and exams. “It’s one thing to cram knowledge into your head, it’s quite another to put that knowledge to work in the real world” they’ll say. Internships in your chosen field will improve your chances of finding full-time work when the time comes and put you at an advantage over your competitors. An internship also means a foot in the door and possible permanent employment when the internship is up (provided you haven’t spent all three months playing Candy Crush.) Internships offer you the opportunity to test out your future career and adjust if necessary, get extra credit from uni, build a network and possibly find a mentor.
DRESS FOR THE JOB YOU WANT First impressions last. That’s a fact. So make it a good one. First off ask your employer what the staff typically wear or what the dress code for the job is. This ensures no first day fluff ups. Ladies keep your skirts moderately lengthened and go with black. You can’t go wrong with black. Gents shy away from patterns and colours like they’re your best friend’s sister. Save up for a good suit and polish your shoes. Both will pay dividends when your friends start getting married. Obviously this all depends on what industry you’re getting in to so when in doubt ask: what would my father say? 12 STUDENTBRANDS.CO.ZA Issue 2 2015

KEEP YOUR RESUME UPDATED Your resume is a representation of yourself. But that doesn’t mean that because you’re a Belieber that the cover letter should have a picture of JB front and centre. In fact, there’s no scenario we can think of in which that should happen. Instead opt for a more conventional approach to your resume: Make sure it’s organized, easy to read and formatted for easy, obvious navigation. Keep it concise and only include the relevant information that a potential employer will need. They don’t need to know that you were in the choir in High School unless you’re applying to judge the X Factor. Format it correctly. This means you’ll need to have an Internet-ready version prepped for emailing as well as a PDF format so that even the most IT-unaware fogey can gain access.
ASSESS YOURSELF ONLINE There are loads of free assessment tests online that will help you confirm that you’re on the right track towards a career that’s not only going to make you money, but more importantly keep you happy and motivated for the next 50 years. We cannot stress enough that these tests are only a starting point. It’s vital that you speak to a professional at your University about your career path and these test results. Find free tests at: EvaSolutions.co.za, UniquePurpose.co.za, Jobs.co.za, SkillsMapAfrica.com
DON’T POST STUPIDITY TO FACEBOOK In 2012 a study by the Journal of Applied Social Psychology reported that 37% of employers use Facebook to pre-screen potential job applicants. It’s 2015, so no doubt that number has swelled dramatically. Future employers will stalk you on Facebook looking for any negative activity including pictures of you in drag at a Uni res party, drunken posts from the back of an Uber cab and anything bad you ever said about past bosses. Whatever you’ve done to look good on your resume can be undone in a matter of seconds on Facebook. So keep it clean or make sure your privacy settings are set to high and limit your content to “friends only.” Still, with the amount of social networks you’re a member of, probably easier to just not post things you’ll regret. What if one day you want to run for president? Oh, the horror!
GET MENTORED Getting a mentor is like getting an informant with insider tips and a drinking buddy who will splurge on Single Malt whiskey for you. The best part about mentors is that they’re feeding you knowledge that will allow you to transcend the industry you’re in and succeed almost anywhere you choose. One snag: you’re gonna have to humble yourself fast and admit you know nothing to make the most of it. If you need proof of how important a mentor is, you should know that a relatively unknown Dr. Ed Roberts was in fact the inventor of the Altair 8800, one of the first microcomputers ever. And, who worked and learned from him? A young Bill Gates.
LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND YOU’LL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE Attributed to numerous famous and educated people over the last 2 500 years, the sentiment remains the same. They also suggest that the minute you stop loving it, find something else to pay the bills. As you start off the first years of your career you should have a very clear and definite goal of where you want to end up and what you want to spend your existence doing. For most this involves realising the joy of one day working for yourself and reaping the benefits of your hard work. Become a sponge, master your trade and prepare yourself for the day that you throw off the bonds of your bosses’ servitude and open up shop for yourself. Alternatively, become a valued, well-paid, indispensable employee in the job you’re in. Your choice really. Issue 2 2015 STUDENTBRANDS.CO.ZA 13

HOW YOU SAAAY...?

packing tips for any lightweight adventure
How to pack properly and still feel comfortable Words Roxy Kopping at @Bubolrox Pictures Adam Affuta at @afonography
P
acking to go on vac means prep a r i n g t o s ay goodbye to your belongings. But don’t stress, we’ve got your back and some basic advice to follow. - what you leave is just as important as what you pack - check the weather of your destination - be aware of the dress culture you’re entering Take this advice and apply it to the mathematical equation of packing. Here are the numbers. Packing toiletries is always the worst. Oh, the fear of shampoo leaking and your cologne shattering. Buy a small transparent toiletry bag and lots of resealable plastic bags. Now include “mini” everything inside. Minishampoo, mini-soap, mini-cologne, mini-toothpaste, etc. The little packets ensure no contamination from toiletry to toiletry. Genius. Undies, undies, undies! Yes of course they’re essential unless you’re really into your birthday suit, but packing one for each day is just lazy. “One to wear and one to wash” is the way to go. “Gross”? Yes. But also the traveler’s guide to packing. 16 STUDENTBRANDS.CO.ZA Issue 2 2015
Socks, believe it or not, are awkward essentials because they’re round and they create height in a suit-case. In order to eliminate socks as a problem item, place them inside your shoes, and in between your rolled up towel. You can even roll two pairs up into one roll to save space.
HOW YOU SAAAY...? Pack different clothes for different days. Instead of making a mess of your hotel room, just prepare outfits in advance and put them in a packet. This will give you an extra 10 minutes in bed in the morning.
Put your shoes in packets to avoid them tarnishing up the rest of your clothing. Shoes get dirty and they like to leave prints on dress shirts and nice clean jeans. Avoid this all by packing them inside a Pick ‘n Pay packet before leaving.
Find out in advance if your holiday destination supplies towels. Backpackers, 3-star hotels and hostels = probably not. When packing, roll the towel onto the side of your suit-case. It may be a tight romantic squeeze but you’ll be grateful for the scored shoe-space.
Start small. Always start with the smallest bag you have. Only use a bigger bag if you need to. You’d be surprised at how much you can fit and you’d be thankful that you didn’t take a bag you’d need a forklift to carry.
Wrap your bag at the airport. It protects against tampering theft and it keeps everything together. Also, don’t wrap your bag at the airport. It’s expensive, looks shite and that exact amount of plastic waste keeps Bono up at night. Your choice.
Pack one pair of simple shoes (ahem…sneakers) that will be there for you in times of cold, wet, thorns or even beach sand. This ensures that you’ll have one pair of reliable footwear as opposed to an assortment of things that you won’t even wear. Shoes are the heaviest things you’ll be packing.
It’s all well and good knowing what to do in life. But it’s almost as important, if not more so knowing what not to do. Image CC by 2.0 Paul Hussey - Flic.kr/p/9B94AD
Pack white because it goes with everything. Like the Coca Cola of clothing, white shirts will make sure you’re never left standing at the edge of a hotel bed wishing you had spent more time standing over your suitcase. Apply same rule to jeans. One pair only.
WHAT NOT TO PACK
PACK ONLY ONE JACKET. Jackets are heavy, hard to squish into bags and are an overall nuisance. If you’re going to a cold destination, pack one jacket, and wear it on the plane, during transit and to your destination so that you don’t have to schlep it all around town in your bag. DON’T PUT YOUR SUNNIES OR YOUR HEADPHONES IN YOUR BAG, WEAR THEM. The best known way to destroy a pair of sunglasses or headphones is by travelling with them. And, the more expensive they are, the more likely you’ll crush them. DON’T PACK HEELS. It’s not about what you want to pack, it’s about what you need to pack, and unfortunately for the girls, heels and wedges are definitely not a must have during holiday season, no matter how sexy they make you feel.

hile we’re in no way suggesting that there’s anything better than the feeling of a crisp R100 note that you’ve just slaved an hour behind a restaurant bar for, are you ready for your student job tips to start rolling in as SMSs on your Smartphone instead of coins in your pocket? The last few years have seen an acceleration of alternative methods of payment available to citizens of the world. And, now that South Africans seem to have gotten over their fear of security and privacy surrounding online payments, it looks like we too are going to start making use of
the array of online payment methods now available. These digital wallets come in the form of applications that sync with your credit card and existing bank account. This tech will allow you to simply touch your Smartphone to a compatible pad in a shop or at a petrol station (with the help of embedded NFC and Biometric technology present in most new Smartphones), taking away the need for tedious swiping of cards and signing of names. The future of commerce is in immediate purchases, and these are the services that you’re going to be using.
SNAPSCAN
APPLE PAY Apple calls Apple Pay an ‘easy, secure and private way to pay’ and is available on both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as well as the fresh on the market Apple Watch meaning owners of iPhone 5 range can also indulge. The problem is that these devices are not what we’d call affordable to most South Africans. That being said, Apple Pay certainly removes the danger of credit card fraud since the merchant you’re paying won’t see your name or credit card number. Lost phones are also not a worry as the payments can be suspended using Apple’s Find My Phone service.
Snapscan is Standard Bank’s digital wallet and comes in the form of a readily available free-to-download app. Other local offerings include Flickpay and Zapper and these services offer South Africans the opportunity to pay for everything from lunch to fruit on the side of the road at over 14 000 merchants nationwide. After downloading the app, you link your credit card. The recently launched Bluetooth-powered SnapBeacons will then alert you if you’re near a merchant that accepts Snapscan payments. After scanning the QR code and confirming with a pin or fingerprint scan, the merchant gets an SMS notification on their phone and life goes on. Mobile wallet BITCOIN Bitcoin is a form of digital currency (currently worth $236 each) created in 2009 that isn’t printed like notes and coins (something called Fiat currency) but rather “mined” by first dodgy online communities and now legit businesses who leave computers running 24/7 for just this reason. Bitcoin isn’t “owned” by anyone, but rather traded online for products and services at rates much lower than conventional credit card payments. 2014 was a terrible year for Bitcoin, seeing the currency drop almost 70% in value, but fans of the paperless payment method insist that the growing adoption rate by merchants and individuals keen to accept the currency for services is growing and 2015 is going to be a much better year. Let’s hope. Coming to SA: Already here From: www.bitcoin.com Available on: iOS, Android and Blackberry
PAYPAL While PayPal looks to be staying off of the in-store payment solution battlefield, there is no denying their popularity since birth in 2002. Available on anything with a browser, you can’t actually buy anything physically with PayPal. It’s geared rather towards online payments or transferring cash to someone independently using an email address and password and linked credit card. While it may be less secure than other methods, you still have to physically add funds to your account, which means that if someone does get in, they won’t have access to everything on your card. Paypal is supported in S.A. and FNB have partnered with them, essentially making PayPal an extension of your account. Coming to SA: Already here From: www.paypal.co.za Available on: iOS, Android and Blackberry
SAMSUNG PAY Pay attention, cos this gets a bit tangled. Samsung Pay works only on the Samsung S6 for now. Android Pay is another service that is available for developers to build a payment service on top of the Android OS using NFC and Biometrics like fingerprint readers. And, lastly there’s Google Wallet which will continue as a separate service to Android Pay, but will be reliant on Android Pay’s framework. This is why one girlfriend is enough. Whatever your poison, Samsung Pay supports payments from NFC, Magnetic Secure Transmission (present in all normal credit card machines) and barcodes. That middle one is important because it means that normal stores won’t need to get any new technology to accept payments from Samsung devices. Coming to SA: Soon, soon. Online Gladiators E-Sports: proudly bringing us the next generation of super athlete Words Tyron (Jabu) Barnard (@ATJabu)
E
lectronic Sports, or E-Sports as the Twitter generation calls it, are organized multiplayer video game competitions and they’re growing in popularity faster than MMA in Boksburg. E-Sports are where millennial sportsmen and women master the art of snake-like reactions and Don Juan-like finger speeds in arenas like real-time strategy maps, fighting scenes, first-person shooters, and multiplayer online battlefields. E-Sports by it’s nature is inclusive to everyone. Evident in the fact that as a viewer you are able to watch from a chosen player’s point of view, seeing the electronic world as they see it, without even needing to get off your couch. E-Sports are on the cusp of changing how mainstream sport is presented to viewers and could foster the emergence of more technological inclusions in to mainstream sports like the ref cam, as seen in rugby and MMA. Around since 1972, E-Sports is currently enjoying a boom in viewership, interest and importantly prize money worldwide (Jiao

Wang from China won $1.2 million in prize money in 2014). The challenge of E-Sports is that competitors face never-ending challenges thanks to constant updates and new games requiring complete changes in approach, mindset and skills. The growth in popularity of E-Sports has been thanks to video streaming websites like Twitch who allow spectatorship and monitoring of games from anywhere in the world. This growth has been such that YouTube, who tried unsuccessfully to purchase Twitch, have made a decision to relaunch YouTube live with a renewed focus on live gaming and e-Sports specifically. In competition, teams go up against each other in head-to-head matches featuring five players per side. The DoGaming Championship in South Africa works on a league basis akin to the Premier Soccer League in South Africa, while the International 2014, worked on the format of the UEFA Champions League with a group stage preceded by playoff games until there is an eventual champion.

SA’S TALENT
Twitch – the most popular e-sports streaming site site.
South Africa are currently lagging behind the world in E-sports. Despite this, we still have some outstanding potential stars like Ion Todd, who represented South Africa at the 2014 International e-Sports Federation World Championship, and Doni Teixeira, leading player for Bravado Gaming, the team currently dominating the Premier Division of the DoGaming Championships. In SA, there are three major tournaments: Do Gaming Championships (which paid more than R1 million in total prize money in 2014), the NAG Gaming League and the MSI Beat IT Qualifiers. All of these events are open to the public to enter. Globally excessive amounts of money are on offer including at “The International” for which tickets sold out within one hour of going on sale and more than 20 million people tuning in to watch. Team Newbee from China took top honours and $5 million home to share. Want in? That means getting yourself some gear, finding a game that you can obsess over and then sharpening your skills. Expensive, yes. But if you need some help visit any of the local gaming forums for some advice, help and maybe even some free hand-me-downs. Rather spectate? Then Google these names: PewDiePie, TobyGames and penguinz0. DOTA 2 (Defenders of the Anci ents) is amongst the most popular competitive games

Morizane Boyes
Morizane Boyes is a member of the management board of Mind Sports South Africa, the SASCOC affiliate for South African e-Sport, as well as the only fully qualified female umpire in South Africa for E-Sports. What’s her take on E-Sports? What has been your latest development in E-Sports? I am the only female qualified to umpire E-Sports in South Africa, which allows me to officiate at any level of the sport. What games are your speciality? Starcraft and Tekken, but I enjoy all games. What tournament stands out in your mind? In the 2013 MWEB Mpumalanga Championship I won the Starcraft 2title and then went on to win the Tekken Tag 2 title. This meant I was the first person to qualify for national team trials for 2 titles. Where have you been in the World as a result of E-Sports? I went to Azerbaijan to compete in the IeSF Championships in 2014. It was one of the best moments of my life! What is your preferred platform? I’m a PC fan and personally think it’s the best platform to learn on. A message to aspiring E-Sports players? Play what makes you happy and practice, practice, practice!
UNIVERSAL MUSIC SOUTH AFRICA James Bay Chaos and the Calm 2015 is already shaping up to be a breakout year for the internationally acclaimed UK singer and songwriter, and if this record’s single “Hold Back the River” is anything to go by, James Bay is poised to soon be known worldwide. Since his first-ever US television performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers a month ago, Bay has been profiled by tastemakers such as Spotify, Buzzfeed, Entertainment Weekly and The Guardian as an “Artist to Watch” and he is also a winner of the BRIT’s Critics Choice Award, joining prestigious past winners Adele, Florence + the Machine and Sam Smith.
Taylor Swift 1989 1989 is a touchstone - Swift’s songwriting and sonic evolution surprises us more than ever before. Heavily keyboard and beat driven, the pop sensibilities that have always been the hallmark of Taylor’s music now move front and centre on 1989. “I spent two years making 1989. Two years gives you enough time to grow and change and let things inspire you. I was listening to a lot of late 80’s pop music and how bold those songs were and how that time period was a time of limitless possibilities. In thinking about that, this album is a rebirth for me. This is my very first pop album. 1989 is the most sonically cohesive album I have ever made and my favourite album I have ever made.” said Taylor.
Imagine Dragons Smoke and Mirrors Formed in 2009 by Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman, Imagine Dragons earned a grassroots following by independently releasing a series of EPs. After Alex Da Kid signed them to his KIDinaKORNER/Interscope label, the band made its major-label debut with the release of Continued Silence, a 2012 EP featuring the 2x platinum breakthrough single “It’s Time.” The band’s double-platinum album Night Visions arrived later that year and Imagine Dragons found themselves on a skyward trajectory that saw the album debut at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, and became the No. 1 album on Spotify Worldwide for 2013. To date the band has sold more than 24 million tracks worldwide.

later (often quicker than that) and you’re playing with your order, all in the comfort of your own home. The biggest perk is that it is no more expensive than buying from a local outlet, and there are always ways to find some online bargains for sale. Here’s where…and how… KALAHARI.CO.ZA Do you know what we love? Sales is what we love, and Kalahari has a banner broadcasting its sales right across the top of its website. While Superbalist and Spree are aesthetically pleasing, Kalahari unfortunately is not. It feels like an online hardware store. It’s cold and extremely unexciting appearing schizophrenic at times. Case in point: a kettle being displayed just below 50 Shades of Grey. This can make finding what you want quite challenging.
Superbalist is best at simplistic and almost juvenile yet sophisticated interfaces and clearly labelled menus. This site offers not only men and women’s clothing, but other departments such as: home and décor, art and geekery made easily accessible under its menu “Shop By Department.” Easy and fun, sections are also accompanied by relatively high-res images of all the spunky products they are showcasing.

Main Stream Music now. Music Now!
L
Words Sabelo Mkhabela (@SabzaMK)
et’s face it, not many of us are into buying music anymore. We want it for free, and the music industry needs to adapt to our preferences or it will simply collapse...further. Streaming has somehow become the music industry’s saving grace. Streaming, for those who’ve been living under a rock, is when you listen to a song from a website or app without owning a copy of that song. Further to that, bet you didn’t know
that one of the world’s biggest streaming music sites is a video site. Youtube is one of the biggest online repositories of music (thanks to music videos) in the world. It’s so important in fact that researcher Nielsen reported in 2014 that Youtube was the top place for discovering music after terrestrial radio and friend recommendations. That fact though makes what the following music streaming services have accomplished all the more impressive.
SoundCloud
SoundCloud, established in 2007, has gained major popularity into the 2010s. Streaming on the site is free and some downloads too. You get your very own stream similar to a Facebook or Twitter news feed and can also repost songs or sets to your followers. Subscription fee coming soon soon, but for now, it’s for mahala. HOW MUCH: FREE OR PREMIUM FOR R40/MONTH AVAILABLE ON: IOS, BLACKBERRY & ANDROID WHERE: HTTP://SOUNDCLOUD.COM

Africa, big surprise, is not the biggest consumer of desktop broadband, sticking mainly to accessing media on our phones. Bozza abides with its feature phonefriendly streaming and downloading platform. Content is free and strictly African and includes videos, profiles and songs uploaded by artists on to one, accessible platform. HOW MUCH: FREE AVAILABLE ON: PC WHERE: HTTP://BOZZA.MOBI
Free streaming comes with advertising between songs. Paid-for streaming cost R60 a month, no ads and the option to listen offline and at a higher sound quality. Major record labels (EMI, Sony, Universal) on offer alongside established independent artists meaning an eclectic combination of over 35 million tracks. Bandcamp
YOUTUBE MUSIC KEY
Bandcamp was started in 2008 as an online music and merchandise store for mostly independent musicians. Artists are provided with a customizable microsite where the music they create can be uploaded and shared. All tracks can be played for free but listeners are provided with an option to purchase (if the artists sets so). These prices are decided by the fans and not the artist, a phenomenally socialistic philosophy that we really can get behind. Bandcamp recently revealed that they have raised $100 million for artists since 2008 with an average of $3.5 million each month. Payment on the site is made via credit card or PayPal. HOW MUCH: FREE AVAILABLE ON: IOS AND ANDROID WHERE: HTTP://BANDCAMP.COM
Simfy
One of the more vocal streaming sites in South Africa over the past few years, Simfy offers major tracks from the major four record labels that haven’t gone the way of the Dodo, as well as a collection of smaller, independent labels. Two big USPs make Simfy ideal for the African continent: firstly, they’re available on Blackberry which despite its international struggles still seems to have quite a loyalty here in Africa. Simfy also goes quite large on the social networking angle, allowing users to share playlists and see what friends are listening to. HOW MUCH: R25 TO R60/MONTH AVAILABLE ON: IOS, BLACKBERRY AND ANDROID WHERE: HTTP://SIMFY.CO.ZA
Youtube
When you consider the enormity of the world’s biggest video site, you are even more impressed that the other streaming services on this page that have managed to garner even the most humble of pieces of market share. Some perspective: Spotify, one of the world’s biggest music streaming services, conceded in February 2014 that in the eight months that Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” was available on their platform it had been accessed 200 million times. The same song had a play count of 450 million on Youtube in the same time. HOW MUCH: FREE W/ADS OR MUSIC KEY FOR R100/MONTH AVAILABLE ON: IOS, BLACKBERRY AND ANDROID WHERE: HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/MUSICKEY
Not content with resting on their laurels, Youtube c o n t i n u e s t o e v o l v e, launching their longawaited, paid-for music ser vice Music Key at the end of 2014. This announcement has had giants in the industry like Spotify and Last.fm a little nervous. The service offers a combo of audio and video streams of content from all major labels and a myriad of independent labels too. Off the bat Music Key is only available in a handful of European countries for free and a paid version of around R100 a month. The Music Key service works hand in hand with Google’s already successful Google Play music streaming service. Made sense just to extend the Youtube offering we guess. It’s only been a few months, so it’s hard to say if Music Key has been successful or not. But, at least there’s little chance of Music Key turning out as badly as Jay Z and Beyonce’s Tidal service did. Geeez! Like watching a nutshot in slo-motion and on repeat.

Outdoor Cinemas
L
ast year February, the Menlyn Park drive-In cinema closed down, the very last drive-in in South Africa. Nowadays, if you want to see a movie in a way that involves you putting on pants you must either visit your nearest mall where you run the risk of becoming a victim to a jewelery shop heist or go to an outdoor cinema. Outdoor cinemas aren’t a new concept. The first ones began popping up in the early 1900s in Germany in fact. But in the past few years (and in the face of increasing personal entertainment options) communal watching of movies has enjoyed a resurgence. According to The Galileo founder Huenu Solsona “People come to socialise, catch up with friends, spoil a girlfriend or simply do something different. The social aspect is just as important as the movie itself and often people come as soon as doors open to enjoy as much time as possible mingling before the movie starts”. We love the concept because of the social aspect. The movie is just a backdrop for people meeting up and having a good time.

The Return of e am dg ar Bo e got thwhat your grandparents It’s through the war
You may think that old favourites like “Scrabble” and “Monopoly” are a thing of the past, but the reality is that classic boardgames are actually more popular and easier to play now than ever before. “Monopoly” has been ported to the iPad and mobile app “Words with Friends” is the new Scrabble. This new playing platform means asynchronous gaming. One player starts a game with you, makes a move and closes the app. The opponent is notified of the move, makes their move and the process continues. Multiple games can go on for multiple days or weeks. Kickstarting an industry Thanks to online crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, more new boardgames are seeing the light of day than you probably think. Tim Fowers opened a
campaign to fund his game called “Burgle Bros” asking the crowd to show some love in the form of $10 000 (around R120 000). At the time of print the campaign was just closing with more than $100 000 (more than R1 200 000) being raised in name of production of the game. Breaking down barriers Te c h n o l o g y i s b e i n g embraced in other ways too by boardgame makers. PDF versions of games like “Dungeons and Dragons” are available for download online, negating the need for endless hobby shop skipping. Gamers now play each other over Skype and dedicated programs like RPtool which lets players see the same map, chat over audio and even has a dedicated dice roll button facilitate online interaction. The community helps develop the program and update it.
3D printers are currently available in South Africa for around R20 000 if you shop round. That’s a decent chunk of change right now, but in the next few years we’re going to see these prices drop dramatically and the speeds of printing increase as quickly. A company called Open Board have taken 3D printing and applied it to the table top gaming scene. Open Board want to bring people have been printing their own board game pieces together and introduce more people to the concept. Using Indiegogo, Open Board are looking for backing which will net you access into their members website where you can share you own projects and download other people’s. Their game “Rust 2 Dust” is a great display of the concept. The game sees clans of various robots, the surviving members of a dying civilization, fight with different movements, strengths, and weaknesses. Back them here: Ow.ly/KILR0

Car sharing
The future of cars means playing nice with others
S
outh African cities have never been more congested, traffic has never been more unforgiving and lines for coffee have never been longer. The reality of life in 2015 is that the major cities are busier than they’ve ever been. Bad news for tardy students. Car manufacturers are reacting to this trend by coming up with some intelligent solutions soon to be on offer to citizens of Earth’s cluttered metropolises. Leading the pack is Ford whose Smart Mobility solutions are solving today’s growing global
transportation challenges and changing the way the world moves around. The initiative uses new ideas and community cooperation to improve connectivity and mobility in everyone’s attempts to get from A to B. This concept is on test through mobility experiments that include more flexible user-ship models (like sharing the ownership of cars) and social collaboration that can reward customers (like car-pooling or ride sharing). Perfect for communities and cities that can’t afford or accommodate more sales of cars.

Dynamic social shuttle EXPERIMENT: DO SHUTTLES TO AND FROM POINTS WORK AS A SOLUTION? CITY: NEW YORK AND LONDON This shareable premium service offers riders a point-to-point pick-up and on-demand drop-off in an attempt to better understand the social dynamics and routing requirements of shared transportation. For example, how many people get off and get on in specific places or what days are busier than others? On a mobile app commuters enter a starting location and a destination and a shuttle that accommodates four to ten passengers picks up and drops off commuters at convenient locations all the while taking the most suitable route for all passengers on board.
Car swap EXPERIMENT: CAN A FLEET OF CARS BE MADE AVAILABLE DEPENDING ON A PERSON’S NEED? CITY: MICHIGAN, US Depending on their current need, Ford has offered up their fleet in Michigan to a small group of their employees who are testing to find out if humans can cooperate to make their personal travel habitat more efficient. These Ford employees use a mobile app that allows them to search for a vehicle that meets their needs (running rubbish to the dump versus taking the family to Spur for grannies birthday), and negotiate terms of the swap.
Share car EXPERIMENT: CAN FRIENDS SHARE A CAR LIKE THEY CAN A PIZZA? SHARE-CAR CITY: BANGALORE, INDIA Working in collaboration with Zoomcar, Ford is testing a concept that would allow small groups, such as co-workers, apartment dwellers and families, to share a vehicle among multiple drivers. Obviously this means that people who can’t afford a car on their own still get to own one with the help of communal buying. They’re working on a scheduling and ownership platform that makes sense, but in today’s cluttered cities and the cost of a tank a week, this makes so much sense for students who live together in res or digs.
