Head Coach

Bill Nicholson SUNY New Paltz ‘95 z Eighth Season z

A

s head coach Bill Nicholson continues his eighth season at the Virginia Military Institute, he looks to build upon the success he has already accomplished with the VMI Swimming & Diving programs. After winning back-to-back men’s championships in the Northeast Conference (NEC), Nicholson has ushered in a new era, as the Keydets are in their third season in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA). The success the men’s program has experienced, however, is just part of the story of Nicholson’s recent work. In 2005-06, VMI added women’s swimming and diving as a varsity sport, and that season, Nicholson led the team to its first showing in the NEC Championship. In 2006-07,VMI finished ahead of Florida A&M at the NEC Championship, marking the first time the program had defeated an opponent at a conference championship, while last season, the team won its first-ever dual meet, a 52-51 decision at home against New Jersey Tech. In his time at the Institute, Nicholson has seen his Keydets claim 12 individual/team relay conference championships, including seven at the 2006 NEC Championships. Also in 2006, Nicholson saw saw Brenden Geoghagen claim Most Outstanding Diver honors, after the senior claimed both the one-meter and three-meter events. His team's work in the pool, however, only tells half the story. For six consecutive semesters, his men's team received recognition as part of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America National Honor Roll. Teams must post a cumulative 2.80 GPA to qualify for the honor. In addition to his team's academic excellence, Nicholson coached Tom Petykowski '05, who was VMI's valedictorian and an AllConference diver in 2005 and was named First Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine. Petykowski was one of 15 honorees nationwide that were chosen to the At-Large team that consisted of NCAA Division I playing members in gymnastics, golf, rifle, tennis, ice hockey, volleyball, fencing, lacrosse, swimming & diving, skiing and wrestling. He still stands as one of six Keydets to ever earn National First Team honors, and is the first to do so in a sport other than football or basketball. Nicholson (36) took over the VMI swimming and diving program on August 5, 2002. Previously, he spent the 2001-02 season coaching the USS Condors Swim Club in Pleasantville, N.Y., where he coached both the boys and girls programs. Nicholson spent the previous three years (1998-2001) as the men's and women's head swimming coach at Plattsburgh (N.Y.) State University. In his time at Plattsburgh, his teams broke 15 school records. The programs featured just 12 athletes when Nicholson took over, a number that grew to 35 by the time he departed. He improved the Cardinals men's team's performance at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) from a ninth place finish (16 points) in his first season to a sixth place finish (330 points) in his final season. From 1995 to 1998, Nicholson served as the assistant coach for his alma mater, SUNY New Paltz. He worked with the breast and individual medley swimmers primarily during his stint. He helped three swimmers qualify for the Division III NCAA Championships and the men's team's finished in the top four of the SUNYAC each year. As a collegiate swimmer, Nicholson qualified for the Division III NCAA Championships three times and captured eight school records. He won the SUNYAC title in the 400 medley relay in his junior year and was named the team's most valuable swimmer as a senior. In addition, Nicholson won the Coaches Award for Hardest Worker three years and won the team’s Scholar-Athlete Award each of the four seasons he competed. Nicholson graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1995. A native of Horseheads, N.Y., Nicholson swam four years at Horseheads High School and graduated in 1991. He and his wife, Emma, reside in Lexington with their daughter, Emily and son, Ben.

What’s New With VMI Swimming & Diving?

VMI to Sponsor Water Polo as Seventh Women's NCAA Sport Virginia Military Institute Athletic Director Donny White has announced that the Institute's intercollegiate athletic program will add Water Polo to sports sponsored for women's athletics. Plans will proceed to hire a coach by July 1, 2010 with competition to begin during the 2011-12 academic year. The addition of Water Polo will be VMI's seventh NCAA intercollegiate sport sponsored for women. The decision to initiate a women's Water Polo program was based on a study conducted by a committee composed of athletic administrators, faculty, cadets, alumni, and Board of Visitors members. The committee began its research last September examining numerous pros and cons of each team sport as they may pertain to implementation at VMI.The primary focus of the study evaluated the new sport's potential competitive success, operational and facility cost, acceptance by the Corps as a sport that fits well with the VMI culture, and the impact of the new sport on existing VMI sports in relationship to practice and competition facility needs. The committee presented two choices for the addition of a new women's sport and VMI Superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay III made the final decision in consultation with White. "We are pleased to add Water Polo to our women's intercollegiate sports programs," said White. "The decision was based on extensive research by our committee and we felt that it would be the best fit for the Institute at this time.We are also excited about the possibility of our women's swimming program being enhanced with the addition of Water Polo to the sports VMI sponsors on the NCAA Division I level." Women's Water Polo, a traditional spring sport season, has been sponsored as a Championship sport by the NCAA since 2001, although competition itself has taken place much longer. Currently, there are 33 Division I programs, eight Division II programs, and 19 Division III teams. Most colleges that field the sport are located either on the East or West coasts.Water Polo requires a minimum of 10 contests per season and they can be scheduled against teams from all three divisions. Conference affiliation options on the East Coast include the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The 2009 NCAA Championships were held in College Park, Md. and were hosted by the University of Maryland.Teams from all three divisions competed for the title, won by UCLA for the fifth straight year.Water Polo also became a women's Olympic sport in 2000, signifying its rise in popularity. When it begins competition,Water Polo will join Soccer, Cross Country, Indoor Track, Swimming and Diving, Outdoor Track and Field, and Rifle as women's NCAA sports fielded by VMI.

VMI Women’s Swimming & Diving Adds Scholarship Funding The Virginia Military Institute recently upgraded its women’s swimming & diving program to scholarship status, beginning in the Fall of 2010. This development shows a renewed commitment to building the program, especially when coupled with the recent addition of women’s water polo to the Institute’s athletic offerings. “We were excited to upgrade our women's swimming and diving program to scholarship status,” said VMI Athletic Director Donny White. “Athletes on the new women's water polo team, which we plan to recruit for next year, should arrive at VMI with some athletic scholarship assistance in the fall of 2011. We will gradually improve the total scholarships offered for both teams over the course of four years so that both programs will be funded to meet Division 1 requirements after four recruiting years for each program.” The women’s swimming & diving team was established in 2005-06, and has seen rapid improvement under head coach Bill Nicholson. The team first competed at a Conference Championship event in 2006, and the following year finished ahead of Florida A&M to mark the first time the program had defeated an opponent. In 2008, the Keydets scored their firstever dual victory, edging New Jersey Tech 52-51 at home. The addition of scholarships to the program will now stand as the next milestone as VMI Women’s Swimming & Diving continues to move forward. “The addition of scholarships will make a substantial difference in the recruiting efforts of VMI Women’s Swimming and Diving,” said Nicholson. “I’m really looking forward to the impact that this decision could make on this program and what the future holds for our cadet-athletes.”

VMI Superintendent receiving reaffirmation of accreditation. Modernized and technologically enhanced academic buildings and a full academic support staff complement splendid instructors. The Institute receives annual national and state recognition for its programs.

Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III General J. H. Binford Peay III,VMI Class of 1962, became the Institute's 14th Superintendent on July 1, 2003.Through Vision 2039, he has ushered in a period of enthusiasm, growth, and change throughout all aspects of VMI. Never losing sight of VMI's primary "academic focus," which he emphasizes as "first among equals," Vision 2039 sets forth a plan that will guide the Institute for decades to come, as it moves toward its 200th anniversary. Enhancing the physical and cultural environment is a key component for the future. Full renovations of Nichols Engineering Hall, Crozet Hall, Mallory Hall, and J.M. Hall have recently been completed, with a major modernization project at Kilbourne Hall, a new Leadership and Ethics Center, and a third Barracks all in "full swing." In addition to the new third barracks structure, this project will include modernization of all rooms in the current Old and New Barracks as well. General Peay and his staff have also spent hundreds of hours buried in the details of cadet leadership functions, cadet organizations, the regimental and class systems, the Honor System, and the cadet daily schedule. "We must have the daily schedule right; leadership, cadet life, study time, management skills, and everything else at VMI evolve around that," says General Peay. Academically,VMI remains a clear leader among undergraduate colleges. In July 2007, the Institute, in a superb performance, successfully completed its ten-year Compliance Certification by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Military and athletics combine with academics to form the historic three-legged stool at VMI, and both play major roles in Vision 2039. A significant increase in commissioning is called for as General Peay emphasizes the importance of military service, not necessarily as a career, but rather for a couple of years in the true spirit of the citizen-soldier. Over the past five years, the percentage of graduating cadets receiving commissions has grown from 34% to 51%. A strong proponent of athletics,Vision 2039 (and "every cadet an athlete") calls for huge capital building efforts which will benefit intercollegiate teams, club teams, intramural sports, and the Corps in general. The initial and most obvious effort is the newly renovated football stadium at Alumni Memorial Field, dedicated - Foster Stadium - in September 2006 in honor of P.Wesley Foster, Jr.,VMI Class of 1956.The Gray-Minor Baseball Stadium, named in honor of Senator Elmon Gray '46 and G. Gilmer Minor, III '63, and the Paulette Locker Room complex in honor of Bill Paulette '69 were completed and dedicated in March 2007. A lacrosse-soccer stadium, additional multi-purpose fields, new Corps confidence courses, tennis courts, RAT Challenge courses, and an improved cross country "Chessie Trail" are planned for the North Post area and will "round-out" what General Peay calls "leadership valley."

Field Artillery, embarking on a 35-year career in the United States Army. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from VMI, a Masters of Arts degree from George Washington University, and he is also a graduate of the United States Army War College. As a cadet, he was a quarterback on the football team, a member of the Honor Court, a Battalion Commander and awarded the Institute's prestigious Cincinnati Medal at graduation. He assumed command of the 101st Airborne Division on 3 August 1989 and led the Division throughout Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM in the Persian Gulf. Promoted to Lieutenant General in 1991, he was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, Department of the Army and Senior Army Member, United States Military Committee, United Nations and on 26 March 1993, he was promoted to the rank of General and appointed the 24th Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army. His last assignment was Commander-inChief, United States Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, from 5 August 1994 to 13 August 1997, with responsibility for the region encompassing twenty countries in Africa, the Middle East, Persian Gulf and South Asia. General Peay is currently Chairman, the Allied Defense Group, and a Director with BAE Systems, Inc.

General Peay considers his Superintendency as an opportunity to give something back to VMI which has had such a significant influence on his life and that of his family. His Father, J.H.B. Peay, Jr. was a graduate of the VMI Class of 1929, and he and his wife, Pamela, have two sons, who are also graduates: Jim, Class of '98, and Ryan, Class of '02. Born in Richmond,Virginia on 10 May 1940, General Peay, upon graduation, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of

VMI Athletic Director victory of the program's fourth NCAA tournament appearance, as twin brothers Chavis and Travis Holmes became the top scoring twins at the NCAA Division I level. In addition, runner Donnie Cowart earned All-American honors in the 3,000meter steeplechase, while women's soccer finished at .500 for the first time and earned its initial post-season win, a 2-1 win over Winthrop in the first round of the Big South Championship. Finally,VMI won the Big South Sportsmanship award for the fourth-consecutive season.

Donny White The most ambitious capital improvements to athletic facilities in 20 years have been launched under the Vision 2039 initiative of VMI Superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay, and Athletic Director Donny White has been a guiding force in the process. Over the past several years, both the football and baseball programs have seen their facilities significantly upgraded with the additions of P.Wesley Foster, Jr. '56 Stadium and Gray-Minor Stadium. Also, the Keydet programs have hosted several highly-regarded visitors and set attendance records during White's tenure, including during the 2008-09 campaign, as this past season saw VMI lacrosse host top-ranked Virginia and Keydet basketball draw 5,029 to a game with Big South rival Liberty in Cameron Hall.

White compiled a distinguished VMI coaching career in two sports spanning 15 years. He joined the football staff in 1971 and helped lead the Keydets to two Southern Conference Championships and a State Championship.White coached the defensive backs to a number one national ranking in 1975 and a number four ranking the following season. He served as VMI co-defensive coordinator from 1976 to 1981 and had the Southern Conference's top-ranked defense in 1977. His defensive backfields led the conference in pass defense three times. White also recruited seven football players who were selected all-conference. In the fall of 1981,White became VMI head baseball coach and began to resurrect a program that had not won a

Southern Conference game the three previous years. His 1982 debut squad compiled six league wins and White was named Southern Conference Co-Coach of the Year. His teams won 85 games in six years and his 1987 squad reached the Southern Conference championship game. While serving as baseball coach, White also taught on the Physical Education staff as an assistant professor. White is a 1965 graduate of VMI with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. As a cadet, he was a Distinguished Military Student, named Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and was awarded the VMI Intercollegiate Athletic Award for excellence.White co-captained the 1964 VMI football team and was selected All-Southern Conference in baseball for three consecutive years as a shortstop while also leading the team in batting. He was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. After graduation from VMI,White was commissioned as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. His decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. White and his wife, Bettie, have four children, Kyle, Katherine, Shannon and Bryan.

White is entering his 27th year in VMI Athletics, having spent 15 seasons as a coach and the past 11 years as Athletic Director. Upon his return in 1998,White immediately went to work addressing the challenging issues facing the VMI athletic department. At the same time, he has built support for intercollegiate athletics among the VMI community and its alumni. His effort has resulted in a change in conference affiliation, increased funding for operations, the development of women's athletics, and a better overall competitive environment for VMI sports. In 2008-09, the Keydet programs posted several notable results:VMI basketball posted 24 wins and came within just one

Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Four NCAA conferences announced the formation of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA), a Division I men’s and women’s swimming and diving Conference encompassing 12 members from four regional Conferences in the MidAtlantic and Southeast regions, on July 10, 2007. The CCSA was established through the cooperative efforts of the coaches, administrators and commissioners of the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Big South Conference, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southern Conference. “The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association creates a regional conference championship opportunity for all the swimming and diving programs in the four participating conferences,” said Atlantic Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart, Executive Director of the CCSA upon its foundation. “The process of building this new conference has been an extremely cooperative effort among all of the coaches and administrators, and we look forward to our inaugural championship meet this coming year. The main focus in establishing the CCSA has been the student-athletes, and we are excited that the swimmers and divers in each of our leagues now have a conference home and honors for which to compete.” The CCSA has 12 total members – 12 women’s swimming and diving teams and six men’s swimming and diving programs. The charter members of the CCSA in women’s swimming are Campbell (A-Sun), College of Charleston (SoCon), Davidson (SoCon), Florida A&M (MEAC), Florida Gulf Coast (A-Sun), Gardner-Webb (Big South), Georgia Southern (SoCon), Howard (MEAC), North Carolina A&T (MEAC), North Florida (A-Sun), Radford (Big South) and VMI (Big South). The six schools that comprise the CCSA men’s swimming members are College of Charleston, Davidson, Florida A&M, Gardner-Webb, Howard and VMI. The CCSA hosted its inaugural Conference Championship on Feb. 21-23, 2008. “The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association membership includes many excellent programs from the Southeast and Middle Atlantic, and will create a demanding and challenging meet for all of those involved,” said VMI swimming and diving coach Bill Nicholson upon the league’s founding. “This is a step up for our program here at VMI and we are looking forward to getting up on the blocks and racing against the higher level of competition the CCSA will present us.”
