2009 Team Preview

A

fter a record-setting 2008 season, the VMI Women's Soccer program is looking to continue that momentum into the upcoming 2009 campaign. Head coach Bryan Williams, the reigning Big South Conference Women's Soccer Coach of the Year, leads a team that returns 10 starters and 13 letter winners from a group that tied for second place in the league standings last season after never having won more than a single conference game over the program's first five years. The charge put to this year's squad is simple: prove that 2008 was no fluke, but the sign of a program on the rise. The Keydets look to be well-equipped to do just that. Returning two First Team All-Conference performers in defender Audrey Falconi and forward Olivia Moore,VMI also returns players responsible for 26 of the 37 goals scored last year and 18 of the 27 assists the team netted in 2008. Defensively,VMI enjoyed its best-ever season last year, setting school records with six shutouts and a 1.30 goals-against-average. This year, the defense returns five players that started at least 10 games on the back line in addition to both goalkeepers that saw action a season ago. "Coming off of a very successful 2008 season for our program, there are a lot of positive feelings with the number of players that we return," said Williams. "I am certainly looking forward to 2009 and the competitive schedule that we have in front of us. Defensively, we return a really strong nucleus, and in the midfield we'll look to mesh together our returning starters with some really talented freshmen. On the attack, we should be able to create dynamic scoring opportunities that will help us be extremely competitive with all of our opponents this fall." Those opponents will take on a different look this fall, as the Keydets will take on four different schools for the first time, including George Mason, Elon, UNC Wilmington and UMBC. "While we have focused on playing an entirely Division I schedule in the past, we now expand into playing several new conferences, both in the state and regionally," said Williams. "I feel like playing those teams, along with our traditional non-conference rivals, will prepare us well for the Big South Conference schedule that awaits us in October." Goalkeepers With the combination of juniors Angela Redmond and Heidi Beemer, the Keydets return one of the top goalkeeping duos in the Big South Conference. Their combined efforts last season played a major role in the team's ascension to an upper-echelon program within the conference, and their development over the next two seasons could again spell big things for the Red,White and Yellow. Redmond, a 2007 Big South All-Freshman Team honoree, saw action in seven games last season, notching three shutouts among her six starts. Coming off an extremely successful spring season, Redmond appears to have a leg up on the starting gig between the pipes entering the 2009 season, where she could once again contend for All-Conference accolades. Beemer stepped up in a big way during her sophomore season, making 15 starts in goal and running up a 6-3-1 record against Big South foes. She ranked among the league leaders in several categories last season, leading the conference in saves and saves per game in Big South play. This season, her athleticism and experience will give the Keydets another option in goal, especially against conference opponents. Defense A veteran core will lead the Keydet defense entering the 2009 season, led by seniors Audrey Falconi and Alexi Staton. Serving as tri-captains of the team, Falconi and Staton have combined to improve the team's defense dramatically over the past two seasons, and with an experienced cast joining the duo, the back line could again enjoy a record-setting season in 2009. "Audrey has been a three-year starter for this program and an All-Conference selection throughout her career,” said Williams. “Entering her senior season, she will once again play at sweeper, where her technical and tactical abilities give us an advantage. Alexi has battled through injuries throughout her career, but has proven a valuable asset for our defense. Her attacking ability from the outside back position gives us another weapon in the transition game.” Joining Falconi and Staton as returning starters from a season ago are junior Jen Ball and sophomores Kelly Morrison and Gabby McCarron. Ball has been a key cog in the team's defensive approach the past two seasons and, as an outside back, is regarded as one of the team's most tenacious defenders. Morrison's freshman campaign was cut short due to a midseason injury, but she has returned to 100% and will be a difference-maker while playing at central defender. McCarron, meanwhile, made 10 starts last season as an outside defender, where she will return this season as a strong defensive player and a dangerous aerial option. Midfield Several new faces will play roles in the midfield for VMI in 2009. While sophomores Sarah Strand and Amanda Berrios are expected to return to roles they assumed last year, freshmen Kacey Hall and Simone Jimenez could see starting duties in the midfield. "Sarah had a great freshman year for us at defensive midfield last season," said Williams. "She returns as a very strong central player who will help us balance our midfield and back line. Amanda also had a standout freshman season, and we'll look for her to use her creativity and attacking mentality to create even more offensive opportunities this year." In addition, senior Chrissy Beach, another tri-captain for this year's squad, could see more time in the midfield this season after playing primarily at the forward position over the past few seasons. "Chrissy returns as a three-year starter and is one of the leaders of this program," said Williams. "She gives us great versatility in being able to shift between forward and outside midfield. I'm looking forward to Chrissy getting back into a scoring role for us and her having the most effective and productive season of her career." A pair of newcomers appears to be slated for major roles in the midfield, as Hall and Jimenez are expected to see time either on the outside as at center midfield. "Kacey comes to VMI with a great deal of experience already," said Williams. "She has excelled as an attacking midfielder with a high work rate and a very good tactical sense on the field. Simone has also seen success on the attack as an outside midfielder, and gives us a very athletic and gifted player that I feel will be key to our growth and success over the next four years." Other veterans slated to see time in the midfield this season include senior Kat Underwood and junior Carolyn Kenaley. The two saw extensive action off the bench last year and will be expected to do the same in 2009. "Kat returns for her fourth season with our program, during which she has filled numerous roles for us," said Williams. "She is the emotional heart of the team and has always played all out in every way possible. Carolyn is recovering from offseason surgery, and we're looking forward to her return to health this season. She is a strong technical player that can create very good things for us on the field." Several other freshmen could see roles in the midfield this season. Taylor Armstrong, Chelsea Loy and Leigha Bocanegra are all expected to see time in various roles this season. "Taylor is another very experienced and seasoned athlete that joined our program this fall," said Williams. "She is a very aggressive player that I see developing into a strong player in our program. Chelsea comes to us after a successful high school career and is a versatile player that could see time either on the attack or as a defender. Leigha is another versatile and aggressive player that I expect to develop into a contributor for this program." Forward Offensively, the Keydets return one of the top freshman goal-scorers in the country in Olivia Moore. Last season, the Powhatan,Va. native became just the sec-

Rosters and Roster Breakdown ond player in Big South history to lead the league in both goals and points as a freshman. As a result, she earned Big South Freshman of the Year and Virginia Rookie of the Year honors, in addition to First Team All-Conference status. "Olivia returns after a tremendous freshman season," said Williams. "She is a truly dynamic forward who possesses the ability to return to the success and brilliance that she achieved a season ago." Joining Moore on the attack this season will be Beach, Berrios and Hall, who are each expected to split time between the midfield and attack. In addition, freshman Christelle Ndongo, the program's first international recruit, is also slated to see time up top. "We're very excited about Christelle joining our program," said Williams. "She possesses tremendous athletic ability, and I feel that her background and experience will positively affect our program.” Outlook Following last year’s breakthrough campaign, the ‘09 Keydets will need to adjust to a different mentality. After years of looking to spring the upset on teams overlooking them, the Keydets now must shift to having a target on their backs. Given a strong senior nucleus, a core of seasoned veterans and a talented freshman class, this year’s squad should be able to prove, once again, that even greater things are in store for the VMI women’s soccer program.

Head Coach Bryan Williams

Bryan Williams Head Coach • Fifth Season • Washington & Lee ‘81 2008 Big South Conference Coach of the Year

B

ryan Williams begins his fifth year at the helm of VMI women's soccer following a stellar 2008 campaign for his program. The Richmond,Va. native now looks to build on the success that the program has experienced over the first four years of his leadership. In 2008,Williams guided the Keydets to their most successful season in school history, one during which the team posted its most overall wins (10), most conference wins (5) and its first-ever postseason win. Williams was recognized for his efforts by his peers, earning Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors after his team jumped from eighth in the league standings into a tie for second in one season. The accolades didn't stop there, as Williams saw three of his players named AllConference, while Olivia Moore took home both Big South and All-State Freshman of the Year awards. Overall,VMI was listed as one of the most improved teams in the country in 2008, while establishing new school records in assists (27), shutouts (6), save percentage (81.9%) and goals-against-average (1.30). Williams was named the second coach of the VMI women's soccer program on July 12, 2005. In his first season,Williams led the squad to its most successful year in the program's history, collecting seven wins while also notching the team's first win over a Division I opponent and its first triumph over a Big South foe. Since that time, he has continued to build the Keydets into a competitive program, with the team claiming several milestone accomplishments over the past three seasons. In his time in Lexington,Williams has also seen several of his athletes recognized for their work on and off the field. Audrey Falconi became the first female athlete at VMI to earn a conference Freshman of the Year honor, and has since been named to the Big South's All-Conference team and to the CoSIDA Academic All-District squad. Additionally, Raevon Pulliam '06 was awarded a prestigious Graduate Fellowship from the Big South Conference, while Angela Redmond became the program's second All-Freshman Team honoree last season.

Coach of the Year honors, in 2002 with the women's team and 2003 with the men's team. In his tenure, he coached four Conference MVP's, two Academic All-Americans and one All-American. He also led his men's team to a conference championship and two runner-up finishes, while the women's team was four times the runners-up in the conference championship. Prior to his tenure at Thiel,Williams held coaching jobs at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Mo., where he was the head coach for the girls' team and both assistant head coach and later head coach with the men's team. While there, he helped lead the team to four state championship appearances in six seasons. While in Kansas City, he won two more Coach of the Year awards, one from the Kansas City Metro Conference, and one from District 7 of Missouri High Schools.Williams also served as the men's club soccer coach at the University of Kansas and the head boys' soccer coach at Shawnee Mission East HS, where he led the team to a regional championship. Williams competed collegiately for the Generals of Washington & Lee, where he was a standout player. Named the Team MVP three times,Williams was also named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's First Team and the VISA West All-State team on three occasions. As a junior, he earned a spot on the prestigious NSCAA All-South Team, while as a senior,Williams was captain of the team and received ODAC Player of the Year honors. As a scholastic player at St. Christopher's,Williams was the team captain as well, and received Richmond All-Metro, All-League and All-State honors. Williams holds both an Advanced Diploma and a National Diploma from the NSCAA, in addition to his USSF National B License. The 1981 graduate of Washington & Lee is married to the former Heather Cook of Doylestown, Pa. and has four children,Virginia (18), George (15), Emma (10) and Stewart (20 mos.).

However, the Keydet program is far from the first fledgling program Williams has taken under his wings. Before spending the spring of 2004 back in Richmond, leading St. Catherine's to a 10-6-1 record and a second place finish in the League of Independent Schools,Williams coached for six seasons at Thiel College in Pennsylvania, beginning the men's soccer program and taking over a women's team that was just two years old. Beginning in 1998,Williams shaped both programs into competitive forces in the Division III President's Athletic Conference.Williams was recognized for his efforts by his peers, being voted Women's Soccer Coach of the Year in 2001 and Men's Soccer Coach of the Year in 2002. However, his work with the Thiel soccer programs was only half of the story. In the winter and spring,Williams would then take over his responsibilities as the head coach for the college's men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams. In his five years at the helm of those programs, he was also received

Looking Back at 2008 TITANIC TURNAROUND- Entering the 2008 season, the Big South coaches voted VMI 10th of 10 teams in their preseason poll. And who could blame them? VMI was 2-29 in their first four seasons in the Big South, with last season’s 1-6 mark as the program’s best-ever League finish. My, how things changed! In 2008,VMI’s 5-3-1 mark not only more than doubled the program’s Conference wins total over the previous four seasons, but tied the Keydets for second in the League standings. It marked the first time in Big South history that a team had come from last in the League standings one season to as high as second place the next year. The team’s four-win improvement in Big South play is tied for the largest single-season turnaround with Radford’s 1999 team (2-3 in 1998, 6-0 in 1999) and Birmingham Southern’s 2004 squad (2-3 in 2003, 6-1 in 2004). Overall in ‘08,VMI’s 10 wins established a new standard for single-season wins by the Keydets, besting a 7-12 mark back in 2005. BIG SOUTH STATS SWEEP- Last season,VMI boasted the individual leaders in goals (Olivia Moore-13), points (Moore-29) and assists (Megan Strand-9). The last time that one Big South team had players with the outright lead in each category at season’s end was in 1999, when Liberty’s Nancy Davis led all three categories. MOORE MAKES FOR HISTORY- Olivia Moore wrapped up her freshman campaign as the Big South leader in both goals (13) and points (29). She became only the second freshman in Big South history to lead both categories, joining UNC Asheville’s Mackenzie Miller, who turned the trick with 13 goals and 32 points in 1995. Moore also became the first freshman to lead the Big South in points since Hilla Rantala of South Alabama did so in 1997. Freshmen leading the Big South in goals has been more common, as CSU’s Wendy Ennis did so in 1993, along with UNC Asheville’s Mackenzie Miller in 1995, while Coastal Carolina’s Blair Monroe tied for the League lead back in 2005. TO THE EARLY BIRD...- Getting off to a good start was paramount for the Keydets in 2008. VMI was 7-0-0 when leading at halftime in 2008, but 0-3-0 when trailing at the intermission. Additionally, the Keydets were 8-3-0 when scoring in the first half, outscoring opponents 23-12 in the opening 45 minutes. And once Coach Bryan Williams’ troops get a lead, watch out. The Keydets were 10-2-0 last season when holding a lead at any point during the match, with the only blemishes to that mark coming in a late season, 3-2 overtime loss to Presbyterian and the season finale, a 2-1 loss to Radford in the Big South Semifinals. SHE’S A DIFFERENCE MAKER- When defender Audrey Falconi went down with an injury in mid-season, you could say that she was sorely missed on the back line. The statistics tell the story, as in the 15 matches that she started last season,VMI has a 1.09 goals-against-average, while in the four matches that she was not among the starting 11, the Keydets’ GAA was 2.13. The Keydets dropped 4-1 decisions to both Radford and Austin Peay during that stretch, along with tying Charleston Southern 1-1 and defeating Winthrop 3-0. KEYDETS TAKE MAJOR HAUL AT BIG SOUTH HONORS BANQUET- VMI forward Olivia Moore earned Freshman of the Year honors while Bryan Williams earned Coach of the Year laurels as the Big South Conference announced its 2008 Women's Soccer Honors prior to the start of the league’s Conference Championship. The Keydets also saw defender Audrey Falconi join Moore on the First Team All-Conference listing, while senior defender Celine Ziobro was tabbed Second Team AllConference by the League's head coaches. Midfielder Sarah Strand also joined Moore on the Big South All-Freshman Team. In all, the women's soccer program netted the largest haul of any VMI sport in a single season since joining the Big South Conference five seasons ago. Williams became VMI’s second Coach of the Year in any sport since joining the League, while Moore and Falconi became the initial First Team All-Conference honorees in program history.

14

Moore also becomes VMI’s second Freshman of the Year honoree in three seasons, as Falconi was so honored in 2006. Additionally, a pair of Keydets went out in style, as seniors Megan Strand and Celine Ziobro were each named to the Big South All-Tournament team following VMI’s run to the Semifinals. FIRST-TIME VICTORS- Among VMI’s 10 wins in 2008 were first-ever wins over five different programs. The Keydets scored such wins over Campbell, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb this season, as well as first-ever conquests of in-state rivals Liberty and Richmond. Those wins marked the first time in VMI’s six seasons that they had defeated Division I teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia. KEYDETS COUNT SIX CLEAN SHEETS IN 2008- A major key to VMI’s success last season was the play of the team’s defense. Anchored by junior All-Conference standout Audrey Falconi and senior co-captain Celine Ziobro, the team’s back line was responsible for a school-record six shutouts in 2008. Among the six clean sheets for VMI were three against Big South opponents, the first Conference shutouts in VMI history. In fact,VMI pitched back-to-back shutouts of Liberty and Winthrop to open their Conference slate, along with a blanking of UNC Asheville. Overall,VMI had a three-game shutout streak in late September and went over 325 minutes without allowing a goal over a five-game span, the longest such streak in school history. SPREADING THE LOVE- In VMI’s 10 wins this season, six different Keydets scored the game-winning goals. Olivia Moore, Amanda Berrios, Chrissy Beach and Christina Gontarski each scored two game-winners, while sisters Megan and Sarah Strand accounted for the other two difference makers between them. FRESHMEN PROVIDE SCORING PUNCH- Led by offensive dynamo Olivia Moore, last year’s the VMI freshman class was a boon for Coach Williams’ offense. The Rats, as they are known in VMI vernacular, accounted for 23 of the team’s 37 goals, or nearly 62% of the team’s scoring. Moore led the way with 13 goals, while Amanda Berrios has five tallies, Sarah Strand and Christina Gontarski each found the back of the net twice, while Gabrielle McCarron scored VMI’s first-ever postseason goal, kick-starting the Keydets’ 2-1 win over Winthrop in the Big South Quarterfinals. Interestingly, all three goals that the Keydets scored in the Big South Championship last season were put in by freshmen. SHE DOES MORE THAN MAKE SAVES- Sophomore goalkeeper Heidi Beemer counted some impressive numbers among her stats in 2008, including a 81.2% save percentage, a 1.26 goals-against-average and two assists. That’s right. Beemer is believed to be the only keeper in the country with multiple assists while playing in net, assisting on a goal against Northern Arizona and the game-winning goal at High Point. She is also believed to be one of four keepers nationally to assist on a game-winner this season. Her feats are the first-ever goalkeeper assists in VMI’s program history. FALCONI EARNS COSIDA/ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT 3 HONORS - Junior defender Audrey Falconi was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team for District 3 last month. Falconi has been a key component to the team’s bestever defensive campaign, one that includes six shutouts already this season. This marks the second time that the defender has been named Academic All-District, being named to the Third Team a season ago. Falconi, a Big South Second Team All-Conference honoree a season ago, has earned a host of academic distinctions while at the Institute. She has twice been named Distinguished in Academic Merit and to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, while also being named a member of the 2007 Big South Women's Soccer AllAcademic Team. Falconi holds the rank of Batallion Sergeant in the VMI Corps of Cadets and carries a 3.81 GPA in Chemistry.

KEYDETS GO BACK-TO-BACK ON THE ROAD- In mid-October, the Keydets weren’t clicking on all cylinders. After running out to a 5-5-1 start, along with a 2-0-1 mark in the Big South, the team dropped back-to-back 4-1 losses to Radford and Austin Peay. Given almost a week to regroup, the Keydets came out and scored historic wins on the road at High Point (3-1) and UNC Asheville (1-0). It marked the first time that VMI had ever won matches in the State of North Carolina (0-8 all-time), and it was also the first time the Keydets had ever won back-to-back Big South road games. Senior midfielder Megan Strand scored the first gamewinner of her career in the 1-0 win over UNC Asheville after assisting on the game-winning goal scored by her sister, Sarah, at High Point. The Keydets nearly made it 3-for-3 just three days later. Making their third separate trip to the Carolinas in less than a week, the Keydets fell 1-0 at Coastal Carolina in a match that saw heavy rain for the entire 90 minutes. STRAND AWARDED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK LAURELS- VMI’s Megan Strand was selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for games played Oct. 27 – Nov. 2 last season. Strand (Fredericksburg,Va.) had an outstanding performance while playing in the final regular-season matches of her career. The senior midfielder scored her fifth goal of the season against Presbyterian before assisting on all three of VMI’s goals in a 3-2 overtime victory against Gardner-Webb on Senior Day. Against GWU, Strand found her sister, Sarah Strand, for the game’s opening goal, then twice saw her corner kicks headed in by freshman Amanda Berrios, including the gamewinner in the 108th minute. BEEMER EARNS BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES- Goalkeeper Heidi Beemer made it two in a row for VMI as she was named Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 7, 2008. Beemer (Virginia Beach,Va.) collected her second career shutout in VMI’s 3-0 win over Winthrop, making seven saves against the Eagles. Three days later, she made eight saves while allowing one goal over 110 minutes in a tie against Charleston Southern. At that point in the season, Beemer had started eight games, posting a 0.84 goals-against average while ranking in the top 25 nationally with a 86.8% save percentage. In league play, Beemer had allowed one goal in 290 minutes (0.31 GAA), making 21 saves on 22 shots on goal (95.5% Sv%). MOORE HONORED AS BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK- Olivia Moore (Powhatan,Va.) was selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for games played Sept. 22-28, 2008. Moore had a remarkable showing in two games that week, netting four goals, three of which came in VMI's 5-0 win over Delaware State. She notched her second hat trick of the season by scoring three straight goals in an eightminute span over the Hornets. That came just one game after Moore scored an insurance goal to secure a 2-0 win over Liberty, the Keydets' firstever win over the Lady Flames in five meetings. It also marked VMI's first-ever conference-opening win and the first win by the Keydets against a Division I opponent from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Moore matched a school record by recording a point in four straight contests, scoring goals in three straight. KEYDETS HEAD WEST- VMI made their maiden voyage west of the Mississippi in ‘08, participating in the Mountain Classic, hosted by Northern Arizona. The trip gave three Keydets, Nevadans Celine Ziobro, Audrey Falconi & Chrissy Beach, a chance to play in front of friends of family, as the three Las Vegas-area natives played approximately three hours from home. While the results did not go the way of the Keydets (3-1 loss to Northern Arizona and 2-1 loss to Boise State), the trip may have provided the team with some long-ranging benefits. Upon returning home from the 7,000-foot altitude the tournament was held at,VMI went 3-0-1 over the next four games, allowing only one goal over the 380 minutes in those matches.

VMI Administration "full swing." In addition to the new third barracks structure, this project will include modernization of all rooms in the current Old and New Barracks as well. General Peay and his staff have also spent hundreds of hours buried in the details of cadet leadership functions, cadet organizations, the regimental and class systems, the Honor System, and the cadet daily schedule. "We must have the daily schedule right; leadership, cadet life, study time, management skills, and everything else at VMI evolve around that," says General Peay.

VMI Superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay III General J. H. Binford Peay III,VMI Class of 1962, became the Institute's 14th Superintendent on July 1, 2003.Through Vision 2039, he has ushered in a period of enthusiasm, growth, and change throughout all aspects of VMI. Never losing sight of VMI's primary "academic focus," which he emphasizes as "first among equals," Vision 2039 sets forth a plan that will guide the Institute for decades to come, as it moves toward its 200th anniversary. Enhancing the physical and cultural environment is a key component for the future. Full renovations of Nichols Engineering Hall, Crozet Hall, Mallory Hall, and J.M. Hall have recently been completed, with a major modernization project at Kilbourne Hall, a new Leadership and Ethics Center, and a third Barracks all in

VMI Athletic Director Donny White The most ambitious capital improvements to athletic facilities in 20 years have been launched under the Vision 2039 initiative of VMI Superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay, and Athletic Director Donny White has been a guiding force in the process. Over the past several years, both the football and baseball programs have seen their facilities significantly upgraded with the additions of P.Wesley Foster, Jr. '56 Stadium and Gray-Minor Stadium. Also, the Keydet programs have hosted several highly-

Academically,VMI remains a clear leader among undergraduate colleges. In July 2007, the Institute, in a superb performance, successfully completed its ten-year Compliance Certification by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools receiving reaffirmation of accreditation. Modernized and technologically enhanced academic buildings and a full academic support staff complement splendid instructors. The Institute receives annual national and state recognition for its programs.

cadets receiving commissions has grown from 34% to 51%. A strong proponent of athletics,Vision 2039 (and "every cadet an athlete") calls for huge capital building efforts which will benefit intercollegiate teams, club teams, intramural sports, and the Corps in general. The initial and most obvious effort is the newly renovated football stadium at Alumni Memorial Field, dedicated - Foster Stadium - in September 2006 in honor of P.Wesley Foster, Jr.,VMI Class of 1956.The Gray-Minor Baseball Stadium, named in honor of Senator Elmon Gray '46 and G. Gilmer Minor, III '63, and the Paulette Locker Room complex in honor of Bill Paulette '69 were completed and dedicated in March 2007. A lacrossesoccer stadium, additional multi-purpose fields, new Corps confidence courses, tennis courts, RAT Challenge courses, and an improved cross country "Chessie Trail" are planned for the North Post area and will "round-out" what General Peay calls "leadership valley."

Military and athletics combine with academics to form the historic three-legged stool at VMI, and both play major roles in Vision 2039. A significant increase in commissioning is called for as General Peay emphasizes the importance of military service, not necessarily as a career, but rather for a couple of years in the true spirit of the citizen-soldier. Over the past five years, the percentage of graduating

General Peay considers his Superintendency as an opportunity to give something back to VMI which has had such a significant influence on his life and that of his family. His Father, J.H.B. Peay, Jr. was a graduate of the VMI Class of 1929, and he and his wife, Pamela, have two sons, who are also graduates: Jim, Class of '98, and Ryan, Class of '02. Born in Richmond, Virginia on 10 May 1940, General Peay, upon graduation, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery, embarking on a 35-year career in the United States Army. Upon his return in 1998,White immediately went to work addressing the challenging issues facing the VMI athletic department. His defensive backfields led the conference in pass defense three times.White also recruited seven football players who were selected all-conference.

In 2008-09, the Keydet programs posted several notable results:VMI basketball posted 24 wins and came within just one victory of the program's fourth NCAA tournament appearance, as twin brothers Chavis and Travis Holmes became the top scoring twins at the NCAA Division I level. In addition, runner Donnie Cowart earned All-American honors in the 3,000-meter

In the fall of 1981,White became VMI head baseball coach and began to resurrect a program that had not won a Southern Conference game the three previous years. His 1982 debut squad compiled six league wins and White was named Southern Conference Co-Coach of the Year. His
