According to Budowski, “tourism has a potential to act as a force to conserve natural resources” (1976). Thus, the intervention strategy is through an environmentally considerate resort and experiential learning center designed to accommodate for both passive and active ecotourists in order to help them reconnect with nature and be immersed in the mountainous identity of Al Galala City. The projects’ concept lies on the idea of experientially re-inhibiting the rock; through the phenomenological dimension of architecture to increase the user’s sense of belonging to the place. This happens through looking into contextual cues from the Red Sea Mountains. THE POWER OF THE PLACE, THE KNOW-HOW & THE HERITAGE

Semester 9: ARCH 4570- Senior Design Studio (Fall 2021) Dr. Heba Khalil Semester 10: ARCH 4981 - Senior Project (Spring 2022) Dr. Basil Kamel & Dr. Ashraf Botros Softwares Used: Revit, AutoCAD, Enscape, Photoshop New Galala City is labelled as a touristic hotspot. However, the types of tourism offered are only recreational form of tourism. Given the mountainous nature of the site buildings should respect the context it is part of. Buldings in such context should allow users to reconnect with nature with its three elements (Sky, Mountain and Sea). Yet, in New Galala City - buildings are imposed and are not reflective of the context they are part of.

Ecotourism is now defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015). Education is meant to be inclusive of both staff and guests.

The site is isolated from the city, the choice of secluded site is reflective of the intervension strategy. It also has a strong natural manifestation, through the interesting topography, duality of view (montain and sea) and future accesibility, through a connection yet to be established.

The building should act as a MEDIATOR between the different users, creating harmony between ALL of them and emphasizing on the idea of social networking and social sustainability.

The essence of the place falls into a series of broken promises that disturpts the balance of the community fabric throughout time, forcing users to constantly adapt. Thus, The interdependence of users as agents of the socio-economic network creates a strained heirachy that asserts each users expression of civic rights and their intense contestation of public space.

The concept of the project is to reaccess the positions of power in the context of Downtown Cairo through the empowerment of the users there by providing a platform where interconnections between the users (ie Venders and Startups) where they grow together, find a common ground and learn from one another.

AZBAKEYADECAYGARDEN:

Public historic gardens are an integral part of our heritage and they need to be conserved as much as any other heritage site. Up until mid-20th century, one can state that Azbakeya was the main node of attraction, people used to dwell inside the park and it was the focal point activating most of its surroundings. Afterwards, themain node of attraction became the Soor and the garden became a backdrop to the commercial activities happening along its gate. The deterioration of AzbakeyaGarden and its loss of 80% of its original size might have not been inevitable due to shifts in power through time and the changes in user’s demands and aspirations. However, throughout its history the garden was able to act as “an event in time, rather than an object in space” constantly adapting to the socio-political changes happening on a micro level. It is apparent thatthe true essence of the Park has been lost.

THE POLYCENTRIC HEARTS

The two main masses are divided accordingly: social &educational. In the library the knowledge in obtained through four ways; traditional, shared, experiential & virtual knowledge. Creating outdoor social spaces was a crucial stage in the design process as it helps to achieve the concept of bridging between the generations. As well as, create a safe space for the children to socialize. This building is there to serve the People of Darb Al Omary and might occasionally be used by tourists coming from the Museum of Islamic Artifacts due to its close proximity to the site.

HOW

The Polycentric Hearts of New Cairo

The concept of this building generated from the sites’ benefits & constraints. The form aims to mimic and built on the concept of “eye on the street” that is very predominate in the area there; this is done through the introduction of the pathways that connect Darb Al Omary Alley to Port Said Street.

Al Yasmeen is a non-gated housing district in North Eastern Side of New Cairo, with a schools’ spine passing through it that qualifies as apotential heart of activity. Due to the mixed use nature of the area a public library, hosting other activities will therefore act as an anchor bring ing different age groups and classes together in one place. This urban accupancture will activate the area by turning a large vacant land into a public lively place

The building as a connector, an enhencor of lives and a lively place Downtown is an Egyption balcony, It is the manifestation of the inside-outside exchange relationshipbetween Cairo and the world. In dbalaconies and downtown different stories and narrative are framed and they conistitute the context’s essence. The resulting geomtery adopts the idea of rotation to embrace the 360 degree dimension of the site, and the idea of carvings to physically frame multiple important contextual landmarks and intangibaly frame the different stories lived within them.

“DTC is envisioned to be a contemporary high-end hospitality and residential mixed-use development in a prestigious setting, adjacent to the Nile in Downtown Cairo, Egypt. The vision design is to take into consideration TSFE’s aspirations, international and regional high-profile benchmarks, Egypt’s Vision 2030, and the site’s context which includes Cairo’s heritage and urban fabric. DTC is therefore projected to become a major attraction for local, regional, and international investors and visitors; a global benchmark for environmental, sustainable and wellness design for high-end mixed-use development; and a major landmark for the City of Cairo.” - Extracted from Competiotion Brief

4] Building on the shared memory of the place, work with the intervension as a living memoryof what once was. PLAN

This map shows a potential strategy in order to have a greener city, through increasing the individual share of green spaces in Cairo. Four anchors are identified as potential green lungs for the city; Zamalek Island, Azabakeya District, Abdeen Square, and finally Al Azhar Park. Eventually they all connect to one another through a series of plant box, and roof gardens resulting into green arteries being created.

3] Opening towards the Nile, and the logic behind the kinetic facade as a treatment for the Western Facade.

The below diagram, shows how the site is embracing the 360 views dimension of the site1] Working with the already existing skyline and respecting it to generate the towers heights.

The development of traditional mashrabeyas were used for privacy, efficient shading and to regulate the temperature in the interior due to the hot arid climate of Cairo. Due to the Nile being on the western facade and to ensure having a good view also to make sure that there is no harmful sunlight penetrating the room. Accordingly, the retrofitted mashrabeya moves upwards as the person goes towards it and then back down to shade the room.

In a group of five stuednts, each group had to pick an architect and study his/ her design philosophy. Afterwards, pick a site in Egypt to place the lanndmark inspired by their philosophy at. The model should be made using 1:2 scale.

AL HOREYA is a landmark inspired by the dynamic and fluid work of Zaha Hadid.

After studying the design strategy of Zaha Hadid, each group should design a 1 to 2 landmark that reflects a relevant concept and decide on the landmark’s site, then come up with a suitable design for the landmark. Our chosen site is in Saad Zaghloul’s Square in front of (15th of May Bridge) which was an important gathering point during 2011 and the 2013 revolutions. Thus, we created a landmark that generated from the street network of the area and use it as a form generation strategy.
