Background

Hawaiian/Polynesian mythology rivals that of the Greeks in significance and depth. Tracing roots back into Polynesian antiquity, Aukele was a cultural hero cut in a classic mold. The last born in a family of twelve sons, Aukele had to fight his way to distinction at an early age. Particularly excelling in swimming, his many feats included swimming vast distances across the surface of the ocean and swimming to the bottom to retrieve the Water of Life. This was the first work I created with the use of the computer [1987]. - JT

Performance

Like many orchestral works of the 20th century, Sinfonia in F has a literary source – that of the mythic hero Aukele’s early conflict with his brothers and his winning the protection of the dragon Ka-mo’o-inanea, his grandmother. I’ve striven to create a vivid and dramatic score, and the outlining of the unfolding drama is paramount to the overall interpretation of the music. Likewise, the strong rhythmic passages should be robustly emphasized, as in hula kahiko [ancient style]. - JT

About the composer

Jerré Tanner (b. 1939 - ), a long-time resident of Hawaii, has devoted much of his energy to the creation of a repertory of music based in Hawaiian culture including opera, symphonies and other symphonic music, art songs, original choral works and settings of traditional Hawaiian songs. He holds an MA degree in composition from San Francisco State University, has been awarded the Hawaii Artist Fellowship from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts [HSFCA], has received grants from the HSFCA, the National and Hawaii Bicentennial Commissions, two commissions from the American Composers Forum’s “Continental Harmony” Millenium program for the states of New Mexico and North Carolina, and has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Chamber Orchestra, among others.

Program Notes SINFONIA IN F “AUKELE (THE SWIMMER)” is based on the ancient Hawaiian/Polynesian myth Aukele-nui-a-Iku [great swimmer son of Iku], one of the few heroes singled out for his swimming prowess, a remarkable distinction given by a people who are nearly all good swimmers. The music begins with a grand percussion and brass fanfare, stating the head of Aukele’s heroic theme, then moves on to a sparkling, lyrical passage depicting his joy in swimming. As Aukele emerges from the sea his jealous brothers lie in wait and attack him. Aukele defeats them one by one in wrestling, felling each with a single throw. Enraged, his ten brothers all attack him at once. Strong hula rhythms for percussion describe this dramatic conflict. The passage ends with Aukele being beaten mercilessly and cast into a deep pit which is known as the home of a fearsome, man-eating mo’o [dragon] called Ka-mo’o-Inanea. He struggles in vain to climb from the pit but falls back to the bottom. The full string choir plumbs the depths of his pain and despair, stating for the first time Aukele’s full theme (in a minor key). The approach of the dreaded mo’o is felt. The brass choir intones the emergence of the giant mo’o, rising from deep recesses in the earth. Aukele musters the strength to defend himself, and a trumpet flourish challenges the monster. His heroic stance causes the mo’o to recognize the youth as her grandson. The full orchestra swells to a shimmering pitch as she gives Aukele seven miraculous gifts to aid in his future heroic feats (Aukele’s full theme, in a major key). She then picks him up and lifts him out of the pit, setting him free. – Harvey Hess
