corte , pliegue , ensamble y modulación : memorias sobre papel cut, fold, assemble and modulation: memories on paper
This portfolio contains five projects I’ve done during my period of design study at the e[ad] PUCV (Escuela de Arquitectura y diseño de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso). Within this selection 3 projects are developed individually as a keepsake or a memory of three different events: the first corresponds to the memory of the subject matter contained in the Travesía to Sao Francisco do Sul, Brazil, 2009; the second is contitued in the context of the celebration of Athena Act, 2010 performed in Santiago, Chile; and the third corresponds to a data visualization that shows all the work done by the e[ad] PUCV. These three projects represent a synthesis of my interests and design perspective, since all three are mild simple construction elements that contain a simple and readable memory of an event. Besides these 3 projects are also two experiences (Travesías) where the projects were made on a group base in order to create a work that would be set up a gift to America.

travesía las lástimas : el primer regalo travesía las lástimas 2008: the first gift
Travesías are Poetical travels to different places of America that the e[ad] PUCV does each year since 1984. These trips are integrated by students and faculties of Architecture, Graphic Design and Industrial Design. In the Travesías works are made from the creativity of the craft and set somewhere in America determined by the study developed by each class. America has to be covered in its extent; is necesary to go to the coninent, go to recognize it and inhabit its emergency. The first Travesía that I participated in, was the travesía to the Andean foothills, where the given away work corresponds to a place for rest and celebration for the mule drivers that go there every January 20th to pray and Celebrate Saint Sebastian.

the trip The two most relevant aspects of this TravesĂa were the travel and work performed because, on one hand, the trip itself was a big enterprise and on the other hand, we needed a lot of effort to build this proyect in a place where there was no facilities for construction. The trip began in ViĂąa del Mar where we travel in different coaches to the city of Linares, a distance of 416.57 Kms in 6 hours. Arriving at Linares we took a break for lunch and around 14.00 hours we return to the trip another type of buses that would bring us to the side of the mountain range. This

second trip lasted 2 hours and from there we began our 2 hours trek to the camp “Las Mulas”. Here we spent the night, and the next day we left early to do the last stretch on horseback towards the Andes Mountains for 7-8 hours. The images I show here corresponds to the last stretch where a group of 100 horses took us to our destination: the sector “Bajo las Lágrimas”.

Working on the construction of the stone walls
The work finished
the work The work done corresponds to a place for rest of the muleteers who each year go up the mountains to celebrate San Sebastian to give thanks for the harvest. The difficulties that this project covers are: the journey itself, as there were no facilities to transport materials and many tools; the isolation: because the place did not have any camp facility or any type of communication with the outside world. For these two main reasons is that we raise the work with a minimal range of tools and materials: the

perimeter was built with low-rise stone walls and and volume was generated by some clean trunks vertically seted supporting light cubes brought by students of one of the classes participants in this journey. Our class also brought as a gift a poem printed in low relief tiles manufactured by ourselves in the work studio of Ciudad Abierta (Open City) 1
1. Open City is a territory whose space is built by its inhabitants through trades; always under the light of “Amereida” epic poem reveals a poetic vision of America. This place also is established as experimental field where teachers and students from around the world participate in various projects related to architecture and design. Several of the inhabitants of this city are also teachers and alumni of the e[ad] PUCV

memoria travesĂa sao francisco do sul : el manto modulado travesĂa sao francisco do sul memory: modulated mantle
This work was the final project of the second Graphic Design class. The requirement of the assignment was to build an exhibition mantle from a single module model that could join another of equal size and shape to finally build a mantle 3 meters high by 1.5 wide. The content of this mantle corresponds to the subjects studied during the TravesĂa to Sao Francisco do Sul where, in a similar way to this final project, the members of this class as a group built a mantle that constituted a backdrop for a stage marking the center point of the square built as global project of the enterprise. The colors of this mantle were printed through the printing technique of direct transfer of ink from paper to paper.

cortes y pliegues para el regalo y memoria del acto athenea 2010 cuts and folds for the 2010 athenea act gift and memory
As a closing of the journey to Santiago on 2010 was organized a ceremony to commemorate and promote the recovery of the “Athena” sculpture gifted in 1987 to the that city. It was located in one of the edges of the Mapocho river and because of the passage of time this sculpture deteriorate to nothing. To act is to perform. In addition to poetry reading and the design of a toast, we also design a gift for the guests who attend the event for which each of the students in the class made a proposal. The chosen gift corresponded to my proposal because it achieved the imitation of the gesture of the original sculpture by simple cuts and folds. Along with this gift for the guests a memory of this act was designed, so that all texts read and recited could be preserved over time within a printed element, therefore the format of this second project is much larger than the first one. The design of this memory corresponds to the Final Project of the third-year of graphic design class, where each student made his proposal individually.

corte y ensambe para visualizar la memoria de obras de la e [ ad ] pucv cutting and assembly for visualize the e[ad] PUCV works and publications memory
Together with my classmate Karen Carrera and some industrial designers, I participate in the 5th Chilean Biennial of Design exposing a module similar to a table in its structure built with curved wood and a tense paper as surface, characteristics that enable it to constitut an exhibition unit. Karen and I were responsible for designing the visualization that would be printed in the paper over the surface of the exhibition unit. To design this visualization we use data collected in the first of our degree project. These data compiled all works performed by the e[ad] PUCV since its beginings. As in previous projects the technies of cut and fold were integrated into the design of data visualization.

travesía sao paulo 2012: el regalo recitado travesía sao paulo 2012: the gift recited
This is the last journey in which I participated as a student in the Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño PUCV, and also corresponds to the Travesía made in the year that the Faculty celebrates its 60 years. This time we traveled to Sao Paulo because the Open City was invited to participate in the 30th Biennial of Art Sao Paulo, so, several professors from the School decided to participate with their classes in the design and installation of the exhibition that would take place in the Pavilion Cecilio Matarazzo. In this Travesía I participated as a teacher assistant of the Graphic Design third-year class. to this exhibition we bringed something very characteristic of the School and The Open City: The recited word.
27

the recited gift The relevance of this Traves铆a is the contrast its makes between this experience and the first Travedia I paticipated in, because in this occasion the grouo i was in was constituted exclusively by grapich design students, so the dimensions of the work were very different, even though the gift was very similar to the first given. This time the space was built by word and movement, there were no physical limits stablished by some construction, but this limit was constructed by displacement and scope of the volume of the voices of those who recited.

travesía sao paulo 2012: el regalo recitado
travesía sao paulo 2012: the recited gift
This work was ephemeral, unlike the one made in theTravesía Las Lástimas , because it was designed only in the context of the celebration of the 30th Biennial of Art in Sao Paulo, all that may remain of it are the texts given away to the viewers. However, they were just a part of the work gifted them In spite of this high contrast, the essence of the trip is the same, to travel around Ámerica, to recognize it and inhabit in it.
