SAFETY TRAVELS According to Wikipedia, there are two slightly different meanings of safety. For example, home safety may indicate a building's ability to protect against external harm events (such as weather, home invasion, etc.), or may indicate that its internal installations (such as appliances, stairs, etc.) are safe (not dangerous or harmful) for its inhabitants. Discussions of safety often include mention of related terms. Security is such a term. With time the definitions between these two have often become interchanged, equated, and frequently appear juxtaposed in the same sentence. Readers unfortunately are left to conclude whether they comprise a redundancy. This confuses the uniqueness that should be reserved for each by itself. When seen as unique, as we intend here, each term will assume its rightful place in influencing and being influenced by the other.

Safety is the condition of a “steady state” of an organisation or place doing what it is supposed to do. “What it is supposed to do” is defined in terms of public codes and standards, associated architectural and engineering designs, corporate vision and mission statements, and operational plans and personnel policies. For any organisation, place, or function, large or small, safety is a normative concept. It complies with situation-specific definitions of what is expected and acceptable. Using this definition, protection from a home’s external threats and protection from its internal structural and equipment failures (see Meanings, above) are not two types of safety but rather two aspects of a home’s steady state. Security is the process or means, physical or human, of delaying, preventing, and otherwise protecting against external or internal, defects, dangers, loss, criminals, and other individuals or actions that threaten, hinder or destroy an organisations “steady state,” and deprive it of its intended purpose for being. Using this generic definition of safety it is possible to specify the elements of a security program.

THE HIKING According to Wikipedia, Hiking is the preferred term, in Canada and the United States, for a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails (footpaths), in the countryside, while the word walking is used for shorter, particularly urban walks. On the other hand, in the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, the word "walking" is acceptable to describe all forms of walking, whether it is a walk in the park or backpacking in the Alps. The word hiking is also often used in the UK, along with rambling (a slightly old-fashioned term), hillwalking, and fell walking (a term mostly used for hillwalking in northern England). In New Zealand a long, vigorous walk or hike is called tramping. It is a popular activity with numerous hiking organizations worldwide, and studies suggest that all forms of walking have health benefits.

REISE | PAGE 4

Hiking sometimes involves bushwhacking and is sometimes referred to as such. This specifically refers to difficult walking through dense forest, undergrowth, or bushes, where forward progress requires pushing vegetation aside. In extreme cases of bushwhacking, where the vegetation is so dense that human passage is impeded, a machete is used to clear a pathway.

KEEP THEM HAPPY WORDS BY LAUREN SARGEANT

Choosing the perfect bridesmaids' dresses, whilst avoiding sartorial-related fights, can seem like a mammoth task. How do you ensure everybody (including you!) is satisfied with their options, without feeling like any of your friendships have been compromised in the process?

In short, we’ve found that timeline of your checklist has a powerful part to play: it allows for you to set up clear goals and boundaries. It gives your bridesmaids time to explore their budgetary limitations (hey, sometimes it takes sitting down for a few hours with a calculator!), choose their preferred styles, organise the string of necessary fittings, and- lets be honest- provides the time- cushion that’s so often needed to hash out any remaining style issues. This checklist is just a guideline and doesn't necessarily need to be followed exactly, but it should offer some helpful tips.

So, make sure you and your maid of honour have a copy of this list, talk about things throughout the whole process, and it should all be relatively smooth sailing. Ask the bridesmaids to work with the maid of honour to start scouting for suitable dress styles. If they're emailing each other, make sure that they CC you in, so you can offer feedback and suggestions. Get the girls to visit a dressmaker, to have their measurements professionally taken.

Send the maids out on a dress-search expedition. Once they've narrowed down a few options, you can tag along with them to the stores and choose your favourite dress for the occasion. As soon as you've come to a decision, make sure that all of your maids put down their deposits and order their dress in the right size. If they're having the dresses tailormade, make sure the dressmaker has all of the correct measurements. Check in with the maid of honour and make sure that the financial side of the bridesmaids' dresses has been taken care of.

FROM THE EDITOR

There was a time when all you heard about were summer weddings: Ooh, she’s going to be a June bride, and all that. But in the past several years, cooler-weather weddings have been significantly on the rise; the fall is always absolutely packed with them, and more and more people seem to be using the holidays — let’s ring in the new year at our reception! — as an already-festive reason to celebrate during that time of year. I can tell from talking with wedding industry professionals and brides-to-be picking their dates. I can tell from the invitations landing in my mailbox. And I can tell by the three-wedding Saturdays the Center City church below my balcony (on which I may or may not be peeping) hosts once Labor Day has passed. And I have to admit, it’s my personal favorite time of year for a wedding.

I just think the whole season — the colors, the smells, the weather, the aforementioned festive vibe — sets the perfect atmosphere for the biggest, most important party of your life. So when we started planning this issue, we wanted to capture all that the season — and of course, everything our region’s best vendors — has to offer your fall/winter wedding There’s lots more inside this issue — from how to make sure you’ve got an iron-clad vendor contract, to how on earth you’re supposed to merge all your stuff (and finances, and families) together now that you’re getting married, to advice from a guy who’s been there on whether or not to invite your ex to the wedding. While a good conclusion is an important ingredient for newspaper articles, the immediacy of a deadline environment means that copy editing often takes the form of deleting everything past an arbitrary point in the story corresponding to the dictates of available space on a page. Therefore, newspaper reporters are trained to write in inverted pyramid style, with all the most important information in the first paragraph or two. ALL ABOUT GRAINS There are dozens of types of whole grains. here are some of the most common ones.

OATS The oat, sometimes called the common oat, is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is known by the same name. While oats are suitable for human consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, one of the most common uses is as livestock feed. Oats are grown in temperate regions. They have a lower summer heat requirement and greater tolerance of rain than other cereals, so are particularly important in areas with cool, wet summers.

BROWN RICE Brown rice (or “hulled” or “unmilled” rice) is whole grain rice. It has a mild, nutty flavor, and is chewier and more nutritious than white rice, but goes rancid more quickly because the bran and germ — which are removed to make white rice — contain fats that can spoil. Any rice, including long-grain, short-grain, or glutinous rice, may be eaten as brown rice.

ATTIC | JANUARY 2016 In a news story, the introductory paragraph tells the most important facts and answers the questions: who, what, where, when, why and how. In a featured story, the author may choose to open in any number of ways. The Five Ws, Five Ws and one H, or the Six Ws are questions whose answers are considered basic in information-gathering. They are often mentioned in journalism, research, and police investigations. They constitute a formula for getting the complete story on a subject. According to the principle of the Five Ws, a report can only be considered complete if it answers these questions starting with an interrogative word. Shelter Magazine A shelter magazine is a periodical publication with an editorial focus on interior design, architecture, home furnishings, and often gardening. The term is most often used in the U.S. magazine publishing trade. The earliest example of this meaning recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from a New York Times article published in 1946, in reference to Your Own Home, a "shelter magazine devoted to low-cost housing", reported to have gained a new advertising manager.

Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. The oldest consumer magazine still in print is The Scots Magazine, which was first published in 1739, though multiple changes in ownership and gaps in publication totaling over 90 years weaken that claim. Lloyd's List was founded in Edward Lloyd's England coffee shop in 1734; it is still published as a daily business newspaper. According to statistics from the end of 2013, subscription levels for 22 of the top 25 magazines declined from 2012 to 2013, with just Time, Glamour and ESPN The Magazine gaining numbers.

Painting, according to Wikipedia, is the practice of applying paint, pigment, or other medium to a surface. The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. Painting describes both the act and the result of the action. Paintings may have for their support surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay, leaf, copper or concrete, and may incorporate

other materials including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf as well as objects. Painting is a mode of creative expression, and the forms are numerous. Drawing, gesture, composition, narration, or abstraction, among other aesthetic modes, may serve to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational, photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolistic , emotive, or be political in nature.

Magazines are publications, usually periodical publications, that are printed or published electronically. (The online versions are called online magazines.) They are generally published on a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. They are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or a combination of the three. At its root, the word "magazine" refers to a collection or storage location. The emergence of the new media branch has to be seen in close connection with the simultaneous spread of the printing press from which the publishing press derives its name.

STELLA'S TOP TIPS

FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS

Stella shares words of wisdom from her years of experience as a young painter.

EXPERIMENT If you're undecided on which path to take, try several paths and then decide which one is the best fit. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

HAVE A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT YOU WANT.

“It's not hard to decide what you want your life to be about. What's hard, she said, is figuring out what you're willing to give up in order to do the things you really care about.”

WORK ON PERSONAL PROJECTS. Simeon Kondev once said, “I feel like every project I work on is a dream project, so long as I am learning.”
