A big thanks from Rotary The President of the New Malden Rotary Club would like to thank the residents of New Malden for their generosity during the Santa Claus street collections and the Saturday collections outside the Co-Op and Waitrose. The total sum raised was over £6,700 which is a first class result given the current economic climate. The proceeds together with other fund raising events throughout the year will go towards supporting many local causes and some international charities. Local causes include Christmas Gift vouchers for the needy, Christmas lunches for the lonely and disabled, support for the Youth Speaks competition, the Fircroft Trust, the Mary Preston Holiday scheme in association with the Inner Wheel and helping to arrange and support the High Street Christmas lights. This year has the Club’s activities have already started with the Youth Speaks competition which is held every year at the New Malden Methodist Church in the High Street. International help includes two shelter boxes to the Dadaab refugee camp in Northern Kenya, Lunchbox Network which ensures that street children in the slums of Nairobi receive at least one square meal a day reducing death incidence for children under five and Railway Children which provides shelter and rehabilitation for children at risk from sleeping rough in railway stations notably in India. Returning to “home” and for this year, on January 10th mock interviews started at Richard Challoner School. The Club arranges all the sessions now that the Kingston Club are assisting other schools. Each Tuesday up to the end of April our club members, four at a time, conduct interviews with pupils and then give feedback to assist them when attending forthcoming College, University or Job assessments. National Stroke Awareness Day. This is usually held in early April at venues throughout the country by

a variety of organisations. Our “stall” in New Malden High Street is open between 10am and 3pm. Members of the general public can have their blood pressure taken, at no cost, by a qualified nurse to check for abnormalities. If necessary it is suggested they contact their local GP. Kids Out. The Club supports local schools with a day visit to Thorpe Park in the summer. Other activities are planned for the year including “Big Band” events with the Dave Marrion Big Band held in the Methodist Church in the summer and winter months and not to be missed. Incidentally, when you are next in the High Street you may wish to check the time on the clock opposite Tudor Williams. “Not a lot of people know” that this was paid for by the New Malden Rotary Club and the Club meets the annual maintenance and running costs. The Common or The Park? There’s only one way to find out! Local author Carl Sims has a dilemma… Most mornings I have a dilemma. It involves the dog and he offers no help - all trees look the same to him. This dilemma is a happy one - where to go? I have a choice: Wimbledon Common or Richmond Park. All this since my eldest daughter wanted a dog (Me: “No, I don’t think it’s a good idea” Her: “Pleeeease Daddy”) Naturally, we got the dog - after a year or so, she promptly moved out, leaving me to dog-sit Mon – Fri and he holidaying with her at weekends, thus I found the excuse to visit these delightful places on a daily basis. Luckily New Malden is equally centric to both – 10 minutes or so either way. Before we start, it’s worth saying there’s a clue in the names as to their difference. Richmond Park is a ‘park’. For one thing it has a wall surround – a remarkable feat, with many of the trails gritted and maintained. Whereas, Wimbledon Common is just that; common land. It has no wall and most of the trails are made by footfall. Having said that it contains two golf courses, which are obviously manicured but not intrusive. Their landscapes differ considerably. The Park has hills and undulating vistas. The Common is largely flat with heavy woodland. The soil differs and thus the trees and flora differ. The Park has many hectares where nothing much happens, whereas the Common has more of a secluded feel. For what it’s worth, I find the Park windier! If you like long walks (2,360 acres) glimpsing fallow deer, views spanning for miles plus at least three places to enjoy refreshment, then Richmond Park is the place (the outside café at Pembroke Lodge serves a fabulous sausage or bacon baguette). The Park is steeped in history. In 1625 Charles I brought his court to Richmond Palace to escape the plague and turned it into a park. His decision, in 1637, to enclose the land was not popular with locals. Legal action in 1758 by John Lewis, (not I think the John Lewis), confirmed the right of access for pedestrians. If you prefer shorter walks with often-serendipitous features then it’s the Common for you. Majestic ponds secluded by towering trees - there’s over a million of them, and the wonderful Windmill with museum and tearooms (try a cup of tea and a toasted teacake). History abounds but less documented, for example; at

8 vvfeb12.indd 8

the southern end of the common are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort known as Caesar’s Camp, although it has no known connection with any Roman emperor! In both venues, you’ll occasionally stumble across brick foundations secluded in the undergrowth or paths suggesting a previous life long disappeared – then you can let your imagination, as well as feet, go o’wandering… Which is best? There’s only one way to find out! What ever I choose means dilemma over and of course, a happy dog. Carl is author of ‘Ahh! Sims’ available Kindle/Amazon and he thanks Wikipedia for some information. We two kings

Did you know that New Malden has important connections with two gentlemen who share the name John King. Our historian Robin Gill tells all.... Our first John was born in Norfolk in 1897, he came to Kingston before December 1818 (this was the date his first child Harriet was christened at Kingston Parish Church). He had married Hannah Gregory the widow of John Gregory of Thames Ditton. Later they had five sons born between 1820 and 1827. By 1836 John had acquired property in London Road (then Norbiton Street). Called Norbiton Lodge the house together with a garden and an adjacent meadow, stood almost opposite St Peters Church. It was bounded by a “lofty wall” The house contained an entrance hall, three reception rooms, kitchen and office space downstairs. On the first floor were a large drawing room, and three bedrooms. A further four bedrooms could be found on the second floor together with a large landing area. In a detached building there was a brew house, a double coach-house, and a large stable. Considering in later years the only occupants of the property were King and his daughter together with two

servants, it must have seemed quite empty. King kept a stud of horses which he used for hunting with the Surrey Stag Hounds. Successful man about town King had made his money through drapery and owned a shop at 1 Thames Street in Kingston (now a branch of Santander). He was appointed a magistrate in 1818, and was a bailiff in 1834-35 before becoming Mayor of Kingston in 1840. He is described as having silver hair and beard, and whilst portly in stature, he had a commanding presence. He enjoyed his field sports and was “the personification of the fine old English gentleman” In September 1834 work began on the railway line connecting Southampton and London. In March 1835 King bought 93 acres of land on what was Norbiton Common, subsequently, he sold some land to the railway company, and the line was opened in May 1838. He sold a further 57 acres in November 1850 to the National Freehold Land Society for £4562 (about £3.5 million today). The society started selling off plots of land for building at £30 each, and these became the Groves in New Malden. John’s wife Hannah died in July 1850, and one of his sons (Henry) died in June 1852. Henry was the surgeon on board the Earl Grey (a convict ship sailing between England and Australia), and had only qualified two years earlier. John himself died at Norbiton Lodge in September 1864 aged 67. According to one observer King was “one of the most important Kingstonians of his day”. He was a member of the old Corporation that used to govern Kingston pre 1835 and was an Alderman of the Borough. He was the senior magistrate, and took a great interest in all aspects that affected the town. As well as owning his property in Thames Street, he own another drapers shop in Kingston’s Market Place (run by Charles Butt) and further property in London. Well respected? On the day of his funeral his remains were taken from his house to Norwood Cemetery in a hearse drawn by four

horses. The hearse was preceded by the Mayor of Kingston with members of the Council, and the magistrates, together about 40 policemen. When they reached the boundary of the borough the party divided in two and the carriage passed between them. It was decided by his family that the stock of the drapery shop would be sold off at a reduced price while they decided what to do with the business. Meanwhile, at the next council meeting, the members were unable to decide how to show their respect to Mr King as they had never had to deal with such a situation before. So they decided against anything being officially entered in the minutes not wanting to set a precedent. Being a magistrate, and well informed about local affairs, Mr King would have been aware of the impending arrival of the railway in the Malden area, and also its intended route. He was also financially able to buy land locally, and had knowledge of the potential benefits it would bring. It was an astute piece of investment on the part of someone known for his “truthfulness and the denouncing of everything like hypocrisy and sham”. Iron man Our second John King was much more involved in Malden’s local affairs. He was born in Walworth Surrey in 1819. He was an ironmonger by trade, and also made iron bedsteads, and frames for carpet bags and portmanteaus. Originally living and working in Endell Street near Covent Garden, he moved to New Malden in 1859.

At the back of the house in Endell Street there was a sunken pool which was called Queen Anne’s Bath. The room which contained the water was converted into a small warehouse by King who boarded over the pool, though some of the Dutch tiles which surrounded the water were still visible. The water flowed from a nearby spring and was supposedly good for the system because of its rich iron content. Mystery surrounds the name, and the history of the water. When John and young family arrived in Malden they took up residence in a large house in Acacia Grove which they called Burlington Villa. John’s wife Jane was born in Bridlington Yorkshire, the former name of that town was Burlington, which is probably how the house got its name. It may be possible that Burlington Road was later named for a similar reason. The couple had two children John b1850, and Grace who was born in 1843. Grace married James Oliver Woollacott on 12th August 1863. He was the son of one of the founders of the Baptist Church in New Malden (Rev John Christopher Woollacott). Unfortunately the marriage did not last long as Grace died on 21st October 1876 aged only 33. Jane died in 1871, and John remarried this time to a widow called Alice Robertson, coincidently also from Bridlington. She brought with her, her three children Mary, George and James. George and James followed their stepfather into the iron business. Malden philanthropist Mr King was elected onto the New Malden Local Board

in the 1870s, achieving more votes than any other candidate, showing how popular he was in the local community. He gave money for more than 200 books to be purchased for the library of Holy Trinity Church (which became the Graham Spicer Institute) when the church started in 1871. In May 1876 he bought land on the east side of Poplar Walk (now Grove) facing Acacia Grove, and also built a large property called Cromwell House on the corner of what was to become Cromwell Avenue (the properties of 142-150 Malden Road now cover the area of the house and grounds). John and Alice had two more children both born there in New Malden (also called John and Alice). John seemed to have owned most of the land on that stretch of the Malden Road as he gave some for the building of the Congregational Church and manse (now United Reformed Church), [he was a non-conformist], and more for the building of Malden College which took place in 1874 on the site now covered by Welbeck Close, and the other houses on that side of the road. In her excellent book detailing the first 100 years of the New Malden and Worcester Park Congregational Church, Geraldine Swain relates that when an application was made by the church to Mr King for “a suitable piece of ground upon

which to build a place of worship”, Mr King gave land in the “High Road” measuring “88 foot in front and 200 or thereabouts in the depth”. On top of this, he also gave a donation of £400 provided the donor was listed purely as “a friend”. The foundation stone for the building was laid by him on13th January 1881. When John was taken ill onboard a train to Waterloo, he was taken to St Thomas Hospital where he died in March 1894, he was subsequently buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London. His second wife Alice survived him for another 25 years dying just after the end of the First World War. So two men, sharing a common name, who contributed in their own way to the development Of Malden. Whilst doing the preparation work for this article I was contacted by a gentleman from Wales asking for some details concerning his family (Lavender) who used to live in New Malden. His name was John King! My thanks to Shaan and Tim Everson for their help with this article.

Beating the winter blues Local massage therapist, Stella Mawhinney explains why having an aromatherapy treatment could be just the tonic to beat the winter blues. Having a massage is a fantastic way of truly relaxing the body – and therefore the mind. This can prove invaluable as we lead such busy, complicated lives. At this time of year we’ve typically set ambitious and often unrealistic targets for our bodies, careers and lifestyles only to get disheartened when we fail to stick to our resolutions. Treating ourselves to a massage can be energising and refreshing as well as extremely relaxing. It might feel unusual to start the year with what seems like a pampering but a treatment might actually help you feel better able to cope with the challenges of life. I am an experienced holistic massage therapist and aromatherapist and a fully insured member of the Complementary Therapists’ Association. Prior to becoming a therapist I was a human resources specialist in central government so I know about the pressures of work and how important it is to take steps to recharge

your batteries. I’m passionate about the benefits that can be achieved through massage because I get great feedback. Clients I treat regularly have reported improved sleep patterns, instant soothing of stress symptoms, more flexible joints and better energy levels. And there’s not a single client who doesn’t, after just one session, report feelings of immense bliss! So how does it work? Through gentle manipulation of the soft tissues, massage can help ease muscle tension, for example in the back and shoulders. Massage also works by helping to stimulate the immune system and encouraging lymphatic drainage, both important mechanisms for ridding the body of toxins and boosting its ability to fight infection. Incorporating aromatherapy – the use of natural essential oils for their beneficial properties – the treatment is enhanced further and can really help heal body, mind and spirit. Take that first step towards prioritising your health and wellbeing and call me directly on 07969 761348 to arrange an appointment or to discuss any queries. VVoice

f their ite cal nies, Festival so trees

View from the city Do you believe in the gift of foresight? Justin Urquhart Stewart shares his thoughts on the reality At the start of the year all the investment houses like to roll out their investment plans with such confidence and aplomb. This year, you will be assured, they will have thought it through even better than before and should no doubt have a good chance of appearing to get it right. Graphs, ratios and long earnest tracts of well argued prose will back their views and inevitably will have the convincing air of credibility. Sadly though for all the effort, thought, and no doubt cost, that has gone into it, the day it is published is also the day it is out of date. Asset allocation of client assets is a dynamic operation, and as such may vary from day to

day. As events over the past few months will have clearly shown, such moves could be swift and drastic, causing significant damage before much can be done. Trying to second guess the future is a mug’s game, but you can at least take action to mitigate the situation and to try and maximise the opportunity for longer term gains and to minimise the losses. This, as I have bored many with before, is down to a rigorous process, structure and discipline of asset allocation. Broadly spread across assets across the globe - it may sound dull, but in the longer term it has been shown to work.Yes, you can take a view and make some adjustments but fundamentally the blend of asset classes will result in a compound return reverting to a “mean” and a more predictable line. Of course there will be exceptions and some very clever (or arguably, lucky) people will make a good call, but can you do that consistently? All too often the damage caused by the bad calls will outweigh the benefit of the good calls. After all, a 50% drop means that you need to find a 100% gain, just to get back to where you started – not so easily done. I was looking at last year’s asset class movements, and whilst we can all sagely nod with the benefit of hindsight, just how many of us were able to call it right at the beginning of the year, let alone judge the timing of some of the dramatic asset value swings that we saw? So what can we learn from the change in asset values? In 2009 for example, the best performing asset class

PART-TIME SECURITY BARRIER OPERATOR A security guard is required on a part-time basis to operate a two-arm electric traffic barrier installed by Kingston Council on the private Coombe Estate at the junction of Warren Road and Coombe Lane West. The hours of work are 4.30 to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. The holder of this position will be required to stand on the barrier island between the two arms for the 2 hour period to alleviate the problem of rat running traffic by turning away unauthorised vehicles. Authorised vehicles are identified by means of windscreen stickers. A gateman’s hut is provided. This position could suit a recently retired member of a security company or a retired police officer. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact Mr Mick Taviner, Secretary to the Coombe Estate Residents’ Association by email at: micktaviner@blueyonder.co.uk or telephone on: 020 8337 2766. 18 vvfeb12.indd 18

seemed to be emerging market equities - which came a very creditable third in 2010 too. However 2011 was a completely different story, and despite the siren calls of certain fund managers, this asset sector came bottom of the rankings. Similarly, take a look at Private Equity, the star of the past two years, which also flopped, to the penultimate place in the rankings. Fashion and fads make financial fools with consummate regularity. Reversing this same process, we should then cast a jaundiced eye over the 2011 wunderkinds and wonder if their day in the sun will turn out to be somewhat shorter than their keen proponents have been telling us. It was Index Linked Bonds that topped the list last year, but with inflation apparently on the wane for the moment, 2012 could be more challenging. With Gilt yields at record lows, their prices drove them to second place turning the “no risk yield” into a “no yield risk”. It was gold that remained in the top three, albeit at a lower return than 2010, and this has to be the bet on the chances of Armageddon. So depending on your view, gold may also have had its period of lustre (excuse the pun). VVoice

Thu 23 Feb - Sat 17 Mar Directed and in a new translation by Stephen Unwin The award-winning film and television actress Joely Richardson makes a welcome return to the London stage for this major revival. Ellida (Joely Richardson) is married to Dr Wangel, and lives with him and his two daughters. But she feels claustrophobic and restless and swims in the sea every day. Ten years ago she promised herself to another man. On a late summer’s day he comes to claim her. Ibsen’s elusive masterpiece offers a surprisingly optimistic answer to the riddle that he posed in A Doll’s House: happiness in marriage is possible, but only under the right conditions… The Lady from the Sea is directed by Stephen Unwin, who has been widely hailed for his five productions of Ibsen, including an award winning Hedda Gabler at the Donmar. All Tickets £8 -£42 Box Office: 08444 821 556 (bkg fee) www.rosetheatrekingston.org (bkg fee) To win a pair of tickets all you need to do is send an email entitled The Gruffalo, or The Lady from the Sea to competitions@maldenmedia.co.uk, or on a postcard to Malden Media, 36 Rosebery Ave, KT3 4JS by 10th February

Community news We catch up with Korean volunteers who have marked one year anniversary at our New Malden Police office Three dedicated volunteers from the local Korean community are celebrating twelve months of providing interpreting services for New Malden police office’s front counter services Mrs SonHae Lee, Mrs Grace Ro, and Mrs Winnie Yoon have been trained by the Metropolitan Police to be able to deal with general front office queries and, between them, have manned each Tuesday afternoon shift from midday to 3pm shift with another long-serving experienced volunteer. Thanking the volunteers for their commitment to helping the local community, Sergeant Nick Ellis says ‘Some time ago we recognised we had a gap in the service that we offered to our community and thus recruited Korean speaking volunteers. Members of the Korean community who have limited English know that they can see a native Korean speaker who is trained to be able to help with general queries and know how to

source specialist advice. The New Malden front counter role in CI Tower role has grown into many additional support activities for our 20,000* Korean nationals in the New Malden area ‘ One of the volunteers, Sonhae Lee said ‘I feel privileged that I am able to make a contribution to the front counter service as it is the ideal conduit allowing the Korean community to more fully integrate into UK society. ‘I would encourage all Koreans with a query or just an interest in learning what we do to come in and see member of the team on a Tuesday afternoon.’ VVoice

Knitting for charity Do you have any spare wool you can donate to Barbara Robson who’s clicking her needles to help others When I was at school, we used to knit squares which would be sewn up into blankets for 3rd world kids. With a bit of spare time on my hands and lots of wool odds and ends lying about, I wondered if this was still happening. A Google search led me to a charity called Kascare (knit-a-square.com) which is asking people to knit blanket squares for AIDS orphans in South Africa. For those who can already knit, there are also simple and fun-to-knit patterns for jumpers and hats. The idea is not just to keep the kids warm, but also let them know that

someone cares about them. I have also found another charity called Helping Hands, which will take anything people are prepared to make for them, and find a good home for it. I particularly like the fact they are asking for scarves, hats and gloves for homeless people in the UK, not just needy people abroad. Knitting for charity gives you a nice warm feeling, an awareness of how lucky you are, and for beginners, a useful craft skill. Would anyone be interested in helping me to start up a local Knitting Group, to meet up for a couple of hours every week or two, knit and chat over a cup of coffee, and teach anyone who would like to learn? I would also appreciate donation of wool - these can be leftover part-balls as well as larger amounts. Thank You Barbara 020 8942 3505 VVoice

Barton Green Theatre Company The Rainmaker by N. Richard Nash A classic American romance, The Rainmaker is a refreshingly heartfelt fable about a con man, a country girl, and the way that love can overcome cynicism in even the most tired of souls. On a drought-stricken ranch in America’s heartland, a charismatic trickster named Starbuck arrives selling the promise of rain. But when he and Lizzie, the lone daughter of the family, discover a genuine chemistry, they begin to consider the possibility of a real miracle. Chicken Goulash - Serves 4 Here’s a delicious winter warming midweek supper that can be rustled up in less than 40 minutes, We’ve used chicken fillets, but you can use cheaper boneless chicken thighs or try strips of lean sirloin steak or pork fillet instead.

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the chicken and onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until both are lightly browned. Add the mushrooms and fry for a further 2 minutes. Mix together the paprika and flour and stir into the pan. Cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in the passata and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. Serve topped with soured cream and boiled potatoes. Sprinkle over the chopped parsley to garnish. VVoice

The Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch Malden & Coombe at their January meeting were proud and privileged to have the Mayor Councillor Patrick Codd at their meeting along with Peter Bruinvels. The Mayor joined the Branch last year and said he was proudto be a member of such an active Branch, and once his Mayoral year was over he would attend a lot more meetings. His main reason for attending the January meeting in his official capacity ws to present one or two BranchCertificates, a Brooch for 15 years and three Corporate Certificates. The first of theCertificates was presented to June Fairclough for her dedicated work as Treasurer and also asour Poppy Organiser along

with her husband John. The other two Certificates were to Peter and Pat Barnard who have for many years assisted the Branch by serving on the Committee and despite ill health Perter still struggles and helps with the Poppy Appeal. The Brooch for 15 years was presented to Mrs Scilla Millar. Corporate Certificates were awarded to The Royal Oak, BAe Systems and Woodies Bar all have collected for many years and have collecting boxes throughout the year Peter Bruinvels said a few words to the Branch. He commented that he was proud of Malden & Coombe because we were such a small Branch in numbers but still managed to collect the magnificent total of £35,350.24p. He said he had been honoured to be asked to take our Anniversary Service last August and he thanked the Branch for inviting him to come along to our meeting. VVoice

Winter Perfume Plants by Pippa Greenwood There’s no escaping the fact that the winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But don’t forget that one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant, especially when I’m out in the garden. So at this time of year, think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now, often in pride of place. The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual orientallooking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning and provided they are kept adequately moist during drier weather they should thrive, especially if you have an acidic soil. If not, they also look good in large tubs such as half-barrels. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. For best results, ensure the roots are just moist at all times and position the shrub somewhere that you can see as well as smell it.Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy. Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another great shrub for winter. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multi-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space allocated to it. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display.

44 vvfeb12.indd 44

If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well in a really large tub or half barrel - for this I would suggest a loam-based John Innes type compost mixed with about 30% loam-free multi-purpose compost to ensure that drainage remains good. The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down. Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eye-catching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right through from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Their only downside is their leaves which can be a real hazard if the mahonia has been planted in the wrong place - once it grows the stems protrude in to nearby paths, seating areas or thoroughfares. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering honeysuckles. They are not as showy as their summer flowering relations, but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without. The bare stems are covered with small whitecream flowers which produce a tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. Unlike the summer flowering species those that have winter appeal are not climbers, but informal shrubs. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you try. Book review Our resident historian Robin Gill reviews local author Tim Everson’s latest book, ‘New Malden Through Time” Books about New Malden are as rare as hens teeth, so any time one is produced it is worth savouring, especially when it is written by such an accomplished local historian as Mr Everson. Tim has already produced a previous title Kingston Upon Thames Through Time in May 2010 part of Amberley Publishing’s range of “Through Time” books with over 400 towns covered from Abingdon to Wotton Under Edge. He has also written local history books for Sutton Publishing, and The History Press. He edited the Surrey History Magazine for a number of years, and is the present chairman of the friends of Kingston Museum.

With a pedigree like that, you know you will be reading a well researched book, packed with interesting illustrations with modern day comparisons. The book takes you on a tour through Malden, starting at the railway station, through the Groves, New Malden, Coombe, and ending in Old Malden. A large number of the pictures were new to me, and packed with interest showing a way of life long gone. It is fascinating to note how some areas have changed dramatically, while others (with the exception of more cars!) have hardly changed at all. I was particularly interested in the many pictures showing the people of Malden at work and play, and wonder what they would think of the present day High Street and the “Twin Towers” The book with 96 pages is priced at £14.99 and available locally at WH Smith, and New Malden Library. Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there” The Go Between by LP Hartley The times they are a-changin’ I was looking, okay nosing, through some of my daughter’s school exercise books and was surprised to see how little there was in them. This wasn’t because she has been bunking lessons but because she gets some of her notes and her homework via the MLE. (Like all TLAs, Three Letter Acronyms, this is designed to keep those in the know in the know and those on the outside on the outside; knowledge is power and all that.) The Managed Learning Environment is a website which allows her to download her homework and any supporting notes as well as uploading her answers.

Will our children cope with all this change?

Your old road is rapidly agin’ I don’t know about you but my homework was given to me using slightly older technology, a technology that had been in use since my parent’s day . It was uploaded in a matter of seconds directly from the teachers brain onto an amazing gadget that the whole class could access simultaenously - these devices were known as chalk and a blackboard. Unlike pre-children who can use a computer before they can write, my first access to a PC (BBC Micro with 16kB of user RAM and floppy disks for storage for the IT geeks amongst you) was in the Upper Sixth Form, now Year 13, and in my first job we shared one in a department of sixteen people (IBM PC 256kB of RAM and a 10MB Hard disc). Now children play games on their smart phones – the computer in those are a million time cheaper, a thousand times more powerful and a hundred thousand times smaller than the the world’s first modern computer Whirlwind built at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. What used to fit in a building now fits in our pockets. Well, my grandmother was born in 1899 and died ninety two years later. Her generation experienced a huge amount of change and managed to cope: the invention of the car and development road network; the invention the aeroplane and development of commercial flying; two world wars; the invention of radio, television, cinema and the computer and do one. If her example is anything to go they’ll be fine although they might moan about how they don’t understand why their children don’t get their homework delivered directly to their mobile phone anymore.
