Worcester Park History David Rymill continues his series about the history of the Cheam Common schools at the top of Central Road Last month we began looking at the history of the Cheam Common schools. This month we continue with memories of the Infants’ School in the 1920s when it was housed in a ‘tin tabernacle’, sometimes known as the ‘tin-tab’ or ‘tin-tack’ close to the present Nursery site near the corner of Balmoral Road, and in the 1930s when it moved to the present buildings in Balmoral Road. Joyce Fellgett (née Featherstone), a pupil in the 1920s, recalls “We had three teachers: Miss Jefferies, first class, and Miss Stone, a teacher I loved, very strict and north-country, where one was promoted to at the age of six – we all had to read, write and knit, and if a child could not do this she was given extra tuition after school. When we were seven we went into Miss Coles’ class (the head teacher) and, joy of joy, we were given pens and ink and rulers to write with. We had to write compositions which were drawn from a box, and each one was different (no copying). I remember one boy drawing a composition to be written on ‘A Thunderstorm’. He wrote ‘In a thunderstorm I ran home to my mother’ – the teacher didn’t expect one sentence, and no mention of the lightning etc. “In ‘break’, which was called ‘playtime’, we skipped and played ‘he’ and hide-and-seek. There was no milk – we were allowed to bring a piece of cake, biscuit, apple or orange, or a bar of chocolate, to be placed on the teacher’s desk for ‘elevenses’, but if we were thirsty we had to drink water.” On 3 February 1930 Miss Robina Harper began duties as Headmistress. In her first weeks there were cases of scarlet fever, diphtheria and mumps, and it was decided to spray the school with formalin. In 1931 overcrowding became a problem. On 13 April about fifty children had to be refused entry for lack of space, and no transfers to junior schools could take place because of a lack of space elsewhere. On 4 May, however, additional temporary rooms were ready for
use, and 61 new children were admitted in three days. The new building in Balmoral Road was handed over for use on 4 April 1932. On 7 April Miss Harper recorded “12 kindergarten tables arrived this morning. No chairs, so far, have come, so the children have had to use the tables, today, for seats. For three days they have had to sit on the floor.” Next day: “No more furniture, so far… Numbers of new children admitted this week is 50, making a total on the register of 431.” Fortunately, on 14 April, “Kindergarten chairs (48) and teachers’ chairs (24) arrived this morning.” In 1936 the temporary buildings were in use again, for two additional classes. Life in the Infants’ School in the 1930s followed an annual pattern. In late May, Empire Day was celebrated: pupils gathered to listen to a broadcast and a talk, followed by songs and the National Anthem, and a half-holiday. Armistice Day was also marked, with the children listening to the Cenotaph ceremony on the radio. At Christmas there might be a children’s party and puppet u

show or a display to parents. Health visitors and nurses often visited. School milk was introduced in 1930, and when the charge was reduced in 1934 to ½d per one-third of a pint the numbers taking it almost tripled to 340. It was recognised, however, that local health problems were less than those of the depressed North, and in November 1934 £2 5s was collected towards a scheme for helping Jarrow. Closer to home, a “Pound Day” for the Sutton and Cheam Hospital in 1936 produced 408 packages or lbs, with 8 marrows, 3 eggs and 2s 9½d in cash. In the summer of 1939 the approach of war prompted gas mask drills, and in September the beginning of the new term was delayed. As we shall see next month, the effects of the war would feature prominently in the life of the school, and in Miss Harper’s entries in the log
book, over the following years. Our illustrations this month were provided by Jean Harrison-Smith née Everett (seen here wearing a grass skirt), and show Miss Harper and pupils on Empire Day, and a class outside the Tin-Tack, in about 1930. Whilst Empire Day was a regular event in May, that was, and still is, also the month of the Cheam Charter Fair. The right to hold this fair, which takes place in Park Road in Cheam Village, supposedly dates back to the 13th century. Richard Marston has recently taken over organising and promoting the annual fair, and is keen to hear from charities, local groups and local businesses interested in having a stall. February - the month of hope
According to the Georgian calendar, February is the second month of the year. Its name is derived from the Latin word ‘februum’ the meaning of which is ’purification’. In the time of Julius Caesar, 15th of February was celebrated as a purification feast, marking the changing from the chills of winter to the first signs of spring. The month was also signified as the last one of winter, and one of atonement and reparation. As the poet Shelley said, a few hundred years later - “If winter comes, can spring be far behind”? February gives us hope that there will be better days to come. January, with its sombre grey skies, can make the most positive of us feel low in spirits. Indeed, during the winter months, many people can fall prey to Seasonal Affective Disorder, a condition brought on by long dark days, that rob us of adequate sunlight and the Vitamin D it provides. As the days gradually get longer and we in the northern hemisphere begin to see the first stirrings of spring, even the most miserable curmudgeon cannot fail to be moved by the sight of catkins on trees or the emergence of tiny snowdrops shoots, as they shyly peep above the cold soil. We cannot expect that winter has forgotten us, but the brilliance of forsythia flowers along the streets and avenues of Worcester Park surely makes us walk with a spring in our step again? As crocuses, daffodils, aconites and heliotropes feel the first weak rays of February sunshine enticing them to also emerge into the cold landscape, how can we fail to feel a little brighter? My love of gardening was instigated on a February day over half a century ago. When I was a girl I attended St. Joseph’s School in Epsom, a short journey from Worcester Park. One of our teachers was a very strict elderly nun called Sister Attracta. Her habit consisted of long black flowing robes, underneath which could be glimpsed the occasional sight of her black and white striped petticoat. Her severe features were framed by a frilled bonnet.The boys and girls who attended the school lived in fear of her wrath. Any misdemeanour was promptly dealt by her applying two rulers to girls’ thighs or three rulers to boys’ hands. Hence our quietly sung ditty “Glory, glory Hallelujah - Sister hit

Our school (which in those days occupied a large Georgian mansion in Dorking Road) had a playing field behind it, at the rear of which was a large dew pond, shaded by tall trees. On that chilly aforementioned morning Sister Attracta took our class for a nature walk around the pond. (She warned us sternly not to wander off in the direction of a water-filled air-raid shelter that was nearby. It was a grim reminder of the recent Second World War, and proved to be a constant magnet to the more daring boys!) She knew her subject well, and from that day onward I never forgot what the first signs of spring were. We stood shivering by the pond, watching the trees casting ever-changing patterns on the water, drinking in every word she said. As the nun explained to us the miracle of nature’s annual rebirth, I became hooked on the wonder of it all, and have been a gardening afficionado ever since. The romantics, of course, look forward to February’s association with St,

Valentine. As Tennyson said “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love”. Even cynics hope that a Valentine card will wing its way to them. One of the first Valentine cards I ever received was when I was in my teens. A young postman had met me when he had delivered a parcel to my home. At the time I had been wearing hair rollers, so you can never tell when a young man will be moved to passion by the sight of you!. I’ve tried the rollers technique many times since, but for some reason they don’t have the same effect as you get older ……………..Norah Batty excepted! Joking apart , as we watch birds starting to be coy with each other each spring, how can we not give a wistful sigh, and smile as we recall loves lost - or hopefully gained? Earth’s relentless seasonal rhythms have always ensured that people, plants and animals are driven to inhabit the planet with their own species. It is a primal compulsion that makes each living thing want to emerge from the dark days of winter with hope of new life to come. Henry Vlll’S vision of a palace without rival In 1538 Henry V111 was determined to outdo his rival Francois 1er of France and so the concept of NONSUCH PALACE was born. Its grandeur and beauty were to be the envy of the world and there would be ‘None Such’ like it!
Originally conceived as a hunting lodge, when his son Edward was born and also to celebrate thirty years of his reign, Henry decided to make it a truly magnificent palace. The Royal Court was unique. The lower part of the inside wall was constructed of freestone but the rest of the building was of massive oak timer framing with spaces between filled with stucco dura panels, said to have been inspired by Homer’s description of the carved marble walls of Troy. Others represented the labours of Hercules. The decorations on the inside of the Court are thought to have been intended to inspire the true virtues befitting a Christian Prince. Both Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn said that they were ‘of Holbein or Rubens doing’. Notably for the time, the tower in the South East contained a large cistern in the upper story which was filled from a spring on nearby Howell Hill; cistern water was piped to wherever it was needed in the Palace and also to the fountains in the gardens. In the centre of the Privy Garden was the Diana fountain around which it is said six lilac trees, presented to Queen Elizabeth by Sir Walter Raleigh, were planted. Henry VIII was present at Nonsuch in 1545 but died in 1547 so it finally comes into the hands of Queen Elizabeth 1st who spent a lot of her time at Nonsuch because she ‘liked well of Nonsuch air.’ Its walls could tell many more stories but, unfortunately, all this history and beauty was finally destroyed by Barbara Villiers, Mistress of Charles 11, by 1682. Lengthy, painstaking investigations by Professor Martin Biddle subsequent to his excavation of the site in 1959, has enabled the renowned modeller Ben Taggart to recreate this masterpiece which beautifully demonstrates

the magnificence of the original palace built between 1538-1545. The date of the model is 1610 and it would have looked like this when young Prince Henry, son of James I was studying there with his tutor Lord Lumley who died in 1609. The Friends of Nonsuch will be 21 in 2012 and it is thanks to their far-sightedness in running volunteer working parties and various book sales with other fund-raising events that we are able to actually see the original Palace brought to life. The model was totally funded by The Friends of Nonsuch and is housed in The Nonsuch Gallery, Nonsuch Mansion, Ewell Road, Cheam, Surrey SM3 8AL.The Friends of Nonsuch will open the Gallery every Sunday, 11a.m. – 2 p.m. during January, February and March. £2.50 adults. 50p. View from the city Do you believe in the gift of foresight? Justin Urquhart Stewart shares his thoughts on the reality At the start of the year all the investment houses like to roll out their investment plans with such confidence and aplomb. This year, you will be assured, they will have thought it through even better than before and should no doubt have a good chance of appearing to get it right. Graphs, ratios and long earnest tracts of well argued prose will back their views and inevitably will have the convincing air of credibility. Sadly though for all the effort, thought, and no doubt cost, that has gone into it, the day it is published is also the day it is out of date. Asset allocation of client assets is a dynamic operation, and as such may vary from day to
day. As events over the past few months will have clearly shown, such moves could be swift and drastic, causing significant damage before much can be done. Trying to second guess the future is a mug’s game, but you can at least take action to mitigate the situation and to try and maximise the opportunity for longer term gains and to minimise the losses. This, as I have bored many with before, is down to a rigorous process, structure and discipline of asset allocation. Broadly spread across assets across the globe - it may sound dull, but in the longer term it has been shown to work.Yes, you can take a view and make some adjustments but fundamentally the blend of asset classes will result in a compound return reverting to a “mean” and a more predictable line. Of course there will be exceptions and some very clever (or arguably, lucky) people will make a good call, but can you do that consistently? All too often the damage caused by the bad calls will outweigh the benefit of the good calls. After all, a 50% drop means that you need to find a 100% gain, just to get back to where you started – not so easily done. I was looking at last year’s asset class movements, and whilst we can all sagely nod with the benefit of hindsight, just how many of us were able to call it right at the beginning of the year, let alone judge the timing of some of the dramatic asset value swings that we saw? So what can we learn from the change in asset values? In 2009 for example, the best performing asset class

seemed to be emerging market equities - which came a very creditable third in 2010 too. However 2011 was a completely different story, and despite the siren calls of certain fund managers, this asset sector came bottom of the rankings. Similarly, take a look at Private Equity, the star of the past two years, which also flopped, to the penultimate place in the rankings. Fashion and fads make financial fools with consummate regularity. Reversing this same process, we should then cast a jaundiced eye over the 2011 wunderkinds and wonder if their day in the sun will turn out to be somewhat shorter than their keen proponents have been telling us. It was Index Linked Bonds that topped the list last year, but with inflation apparently on the wane for the moment, 2012 could be more challenging. With Gilt yields at record lows, their prices drove them to second place turning the “no risk yield” into a “no yield risk”. It was gold that remained in the top three, albeit at a lower return than 2010, and this has to be the bet on the chances of Armageddon. So depending on your view, gold may also have had its period of lustre (excuse the pun). WPLife

Safer Neighbourhoods by PCSO Gary Weaving Metal & Copper Cable Theft The Metropolitan Police Service is launching its first ever dedicated unit to tackle metal theft - a spiralling problem which is costing the UK economy an estimated £770 million a year and causing the deaths of two offenders a month, according to the most recent research. The new multi-agency Waste and Metal Theft Taskforce, whose team includes experts from BT and the local authority’s environmental crime unit, is based in Bexley, one of the boroughs most severely affected by metal theft due to its high number of scrap metal yards. In the first two weeks of December officers across the Met carried out a total of 275 inspections and searches of scrap metal dealer yards, arrested 15 people for offences ranging from burglary to transporting waste metal illegally without a licence, and seized 16 vehicles. Telephone exchanges, electricity substations and railway lines are regularly being disabled by having cabling stripped out. • Live cable theft costs BT Openreach over £10,000 on average, per attack • Impact on Health & Safety, manhole covers left open or missing after attacks • Restricted access to emergency services • Cable Thefts leave communities isolated- no access to communications for vulnerable people The metal is being taken to feed a global market where demand in developing countries such as China and India has sent prices soaring to record levels. It is used in a vast number of areas, including telecoms, power generation, computers and household goods. A few years ago metal theft was described by police as the fastest-growing crime in the UK and the array of items being looted is ever ¬mounting. Lead is being stripped off church roofs, cast-iron manhole covers are disappearing while beer kegs, car catalytic converters and even bus shelters are being taken and melted down. Everything from brass door knobs to aluminium road signs are targets and there is little respect for heritage, culture or remembrance either. Here are just a few reasons why copper theft in particular has become so appealing to criminals: • There are no new significant mines planned. Ores could cease by 2025. • Existing mines are producing less and poorer quality product • Stocks are currently satisfying demand but global inventories are down 26%

Local clubs Epsom Rotaract, a local social and community group for 18 to 30 year olds, has had a great 2011 with a variety of community and fundraising event occuring throughout the year. A sold out crowd attended the Kingswood Village Club on Saturday 19th March and placed their bets at the Tote and bought horses in droves, for the Irish themed Epsom Rotaract Race Night. The event was in aid of the children’s charity Lifelites (www.lifelites.org).
Lifelites provides technology to children in hospices for play, learning and a sense of independence. Rotarians, Rotaractors, friends and relatives helped to raise over £1,126 on the night! Raffle tickets and ‘stand up bingo’ tickets were also on sale. Guests of all ages bought raffle tickets, bingo tickets, tote tickets and horses. The efforts of all involved made the event a big success, in what was the highest grossing race night in Epsom Rotaract History! There have been other significant events throughout 2011.Volunteers consisting of Epsom Rotaract, Epsom Rotary, Ewell Rotary and friends of the clubs (aka the Epsom Community Projects Group) converged in Leatherhead in October 2011. The several rooms at the Pitstop (www.pitstop.ik.com) facility (near Leatherhead football club) were in need of a new look and the team began stage one of the makeover. The project will be continuing into 2012. Throughout November 2011 Epsom Rotaract raised money for Movember (a global cancer awareness project). Using the team name ‘Motaract’ 6 men from

the club grew moustaches for charity and raised £421 for Movember (uk.movember.com) in the process! Also in November 2011 Rotaractors wrapped
presents for operation Christmas Child www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk. The Rotaractors filled shoeboxes with childrens toys and wrapped them. They were then sent off to underprivileged children. Epsom Rotaract made some worthy contributions to the community in 2011. Here’s to more of the same in 2012! Epsom Rotaract meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month from 8:00pm at The Haywain (Brewers Fayre/Travel Inn), 2-4 St Margarets Drive, Epsom, Surrey, KT18 7LB (near Epsom Hospital). Chicken Goulash - Serves 4 Here’s a delicious winter warming midweek supper that can be rustled up in less than 40 minutes, We’ve used chicken fillets, but you can use cheaper boneless chicken thighs or try strips of lean sirloin steak or pork fillet instead. 2 tbsp sunflower oil 600g skinless chicken fillets, thinly sliced 1 red onion, peeled and chopped 200g button mushrooms, wiped 1 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp plain flour 150ml passata (see tip) 150ml chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tbsp soured cream Boiled potatoes, to serve Fresh chopped parsley, to garnish
Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the chicken and onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until both are lightly browned. Add the mushrooms and fry for a further 2 minutes. Mix together the paprika and flour and stir into the pan. Cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in the passata and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. Serve topped with soured cream and boiled potatoes. Sprinkle over the chopped parsley to garnish. WPLife

What is your all time favourite song and artist? I actually normally listen to 70’s and 80’s stuff but if i had to pick a song i think Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” is a song that means the most. If you didn’t work here where would you like to work and why? Without any doubt I would have to say Hawaii, the most beautiful and relaxing place I have ever been lucky enough to visit. What is great about Worcester Park and what would you change? Worcester Park has such a great mixture of people from all over the world and has such great community spirit. I think evenings like the Worcester Park Christmas fayre is a prime example of a community all coming together and they are always filled with so much fun & activities all provided by locals people. What would I change? I think I would have to agree with Darren from last month and say the constant road works on Central Road! Describe the events in your typical day. My day normally starts by being woken up by my four year old son’s smiling face and hearing my two year old daughter calling ‘Daddy’ through the monitor. After we have all got ready I drop them both to nursery with a big sigh of relief and start making my way to either of the shops depending on the work load. After that my
day is very varied and diverse i could be doing retail all day, or up to my elbow doing our service, or having a meeting with a corporate customer - often all these these things can happen in one day. Finishing my days work at 6.30pm I head home to eat dinner with my loving wife and children. Best thing thats happened to you recently? I recently had the opportunity to expand the business with a second shop in Epsom. It took a lot of blood sweat and tears to get there but finally opening the doors for business was very exciting. Favourite one liner or silliest thing you have heard. Being a man that wears alot of jewelry i like. Dont forget the golden rule the man with the gold makes the rules. Your Future Goal? As mentioned above we have recently opened our 2nd shop in Epsom and I guess I would love to see the business grow and be able to give more back into the community we have recently sponsored a local girls football team and hope to take part in many more new adventures like that. The Harpist Of Madrid by Gordon Thomas A lot of retired people live in Worcester Park and I’m just one of them. We all have different hobbies to keep us busy and occupied. My wife Janet, for example, does upholstery. But I have a different kind of hobby, more of an obsession: I write. At nearly 67, I’ve just had my first novel published and I’m over halfway through my second. It all started while, just before I retired from the Home Office, I took Spanish at GCE Advanced level at SCOLA. I had to choose a topic for the oral exam and, as I’ve always been interested in music, I chose Spanish composers. I picked about half a dozen and could hardly find anything about one called Juan Hidalgo, except that he lived Madrid in the 17th century, played the harp for the king and wrote the first two Spanish operas. Instead of giving up on him, I decided that I would find out more and possibly write a book about him. After about two years of research - conducted between playing golf and travelling - I found that I didn’t have enough to write his biography, so I wrote a novel about him instead. It starts with a shocking event in a Madrid theatre which Hidalgo sees on the day he starts writing his book. It tells of his time in the Spanish Inquisition, his friendship with Velazquez, the painter, his falling in love with Francisca and the birth of their son. It shows Hidalgo spying in Italy for the king of Spain and his growing excitement as he tackles new ambitions. Several authors I read inspired me. But Stephen King

encouraged me most by saying that if you could write a thousand words a day you would have a novel in six months. And that’s what I did! Then the hard work really began: the shaping, the editing and the polishing. I asked friends and relatives what they thought, what they would cut or rewrite; what they would expand or restructure. Between us we ended up with a manuscript which I could test on publishers and, at the tenth attempt, I found one: Olympia, who will be for ever in my debt. They wanted me to rewrite one chapter, almost completely, and half of another. They designed the spectacular cover, they published the novel on 30 November and are now marketing it, bless them. So five years after starting the research on Juan Hidalgo and with a lot of help, not least from Janet, and my publisher, I have a novel in print. I think you’d love to read it. If you’d like to, you can buy it on-line at Amazon, Book Depository or from Olympia Publishers themselves. If you’d rather buy it in a shop, it’s on sale at the Post Office in Stoneleigh! Raphael’s Celebrates Its 25th anniversary In April 1987 St Raphael’s Hospice opened its doors for the first time. In the first 12 months the hospice cared for 128 patients. Today, 25 years on, the hospice helps over 900 patients and families each year and in the intervening years has supported over 15,000 patients.
The hospice relies on charitable donations, fundraising and legacies for the three-quarters of what it costs to run each year. There are medical and nursing teams who help each patient on a one to one basis, tailoring care and support to each individual, supporting patients and their families. Last month staff, local supporters including actress June Whitfield, and the Chairman of the Hospice Dr Ron McKeran plus journalists from the Sutton and Wimbledon Guardian newspapers met at St Raphael’s to launch a year long appeal being supported by the local Guardian, a “Give Your Quid” appeal. Voice for wildlife Carol Williams looks how some of the wildlife around us get through winter In February 2011, appropriately on Valentine’s Day, the new pond in Shadbolt Park came alive. Frogs appeared from ‘nowhere’ and laid an abundance of spawn and then entertained us with their croaking and froggy antics for 3 or 4 weeks, before scampering away again, leaving us waiting with baited breath for the appearance of the tadpoles. We had a hard Winter, followed by a very warm and dry Spring. The water level in the pond was seriously compromised by the lack of April rain, which meant that we had to top it up on a weekly basis so that our froglets and baby newts could thrive. Our work was rewarded with a great burst of life. We were, in fact, still finding tiny newts in the water in October. So far this Winter the rain has been good to us - the water level in the pond is quite high,so we wait excitedly for the frogs
to arrive. If the weather continues mild, we can expect them soon, though a cold snap would delay things a little. Come along to Shadbolt Park and see if you can spot a frog. Bubbles on the water could be a sign of their presence. February is a good month to put up nest boxes in the garden. Preferably, they should be at least 10ft from the ground, and on a wall, which makes them less accessible to predators. It is important not to disturb a box once a pair of birds has adopted it. If it is sited in full view of a window you will have the pleasure of watching the comings and goings easily. Leave it undisturbed all Summer and clean out the old nest material in late Autimn. February is the month when the dawn chorus begins to get interesting as birds advertise for mates. If you put out food, continue even in mild weather, as females are building up their strength for breeding now. Once nesting activity begins, mature shrubs and hedges should be left undisturbed. They can be trimmed later when the fledglings are gone. If you have buddleia in the garden and need to prune it, February is a good month to do it. Any tiny new leaves that have already started to form should be left. Though

not a native species it provides excellent butterfly food, so it’s a useful addition to a wildlife area. It is also tough and can be neglected and still flourish. Cotoneaster, another good shrub for wildlife because of its berries, can also be pruned now. If you are not sure of the correct method, check it out before reaching for the secateurs. Doing it wrongly can mean no flowers or fruit that year Some good plants to put in are lily of the valley, violets and hellebores, all of which like a woodland habitat so will do well in shade beneath trees. They will provide nectar for early insects. Any existing clumps can also be divided. Celandines, snowdrops and crocus begin to appear too, and also offer useful insect food. An abundance of insects means there will be plenty of food for baby birds. A couple of years ago BBC Springwatch coined this phrase “Do One Thing For Wildlife” Let that be the resolution this year - to do one thing for wildlife in the garden and encourage the neighbours to do the same, whether it’s making a hedgehog hole

under the fence, leaving some dead wood and leaves in a corner, planting a shrub or hedge that will provide cover and natural food, putting up nest boxes and feeders, creating a small pond, or just resisting the urge to be too tidy -providing that little ‘breathing place’ that could mean the difference between life and death for some small creature. Every little action does make a difference. Think about this - one small bird dies. That means it won’t be able to breed -ever. It might mean the brood it already has, dies too. Which means that none of them will grow up to breed. WIth all the pressures wildlife is under, some species are in serious trouble, so any loss we can prevent is worth a go. This is why I admire the work that Wildlife hospitals do - they make a difference, one animal or bird at a time. Supporting them would be another small action to consider this year. Winter Perfume Plants by Pippa Greenwood There’s no escaping the fact that the winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But don’t forget that one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant, especially when I’m out in the garden. So at this time of year, think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now, often in pride of place. The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual orientallooking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning and provided they are kept adequately moist during drier weather they should thrive, especially if you have an acidic soil. If not, they also look good in large tubs such as half-barrels. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. For best results, ensure the roots are just moist at all times and position the shrub somewhere that you can see as well as smell it.Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy. Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another great shrub for winter. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multi-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space allocated to it. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display. If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the

Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well in a really large tub or half barrel - for this I would suggest a loam-based John Innes type compost mixed with about 30% loam-free multi-purpose compost to ensure that drainage remains good. The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down. Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eye-catching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right through from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Their only downside is their leaves which can be a real hazard if the mahonia has been planted in the wrong place - once it grows the stems protrude in to nearby paths, seating areas or thoroughfares. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering honeysuckles. They are not as showy as their summer flowering relations, but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without. The bare stems are covered with small whitecream flowers which produce a tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. Unlike the summer flowering species those that have winter appeal are not climbers, but informal shrubs. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you WPLife try.
