DEAR READERS January jenny@nmvv.co.uk Think that I may buck the trend, but after a manic December, I am looking forward to January and a bit of a ‘slow down’ on our social scene. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the stream of concerts, shows and parties (and that’s just for the children) but I’d much prefer that they were spread out and not all in the same week! I marvel at how friends with 3, 4 (or even 5!) children manage it – multi-tasking really does come into play and the term housewife/ husband/homemaker should be replaced with a job title Senior Domestic Project Manager! On our Santa list this year the girls asked for a visit to Cadbury World (near Birmingham) I’ve really discovered the value of presents, such as day trips and magazine subscriptions which can be enjoyed throughout the year. You can’t put a price tag on the treasured memories of a family outing – so much more valuable than a pile of plastic toys that are inevitably shoved under a bed and gathering dust by January! So, whilst I’m looking forward to the New Year, I know that for many of us, it can bring a bit of a ‘flat feeling’ – the weather’s cold and wet, money a bit tight after the excesses of Christmas and the summer still seems a very long way off! But, it’s also a great time to start thinking about getting fit, experimenting with a new-look hair style, treating yourself to a massage or maybe planning some renovations to your house and garden (have a look inside at some of our many local professionals who could help you achieve any of these goals, right on your doorstep!) Whatever 2011 holds for you, I wish all of you a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year and please keep on writing to us with your ideas, comments and views about life in New Malden. Warm wishes Jenny Stuart

illage oice V WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT NEW MALDEN Malden Fortnight by Jenny Stuart When we moved to New Malden in 2003, I was heavily pregnant and knew no-one. Family and friends were in Glasgow and old work colleagues scattered around London. We were lucky however to have some lovely neighbours in Coombe Gardens and I gradually grew my friendship circle. Having children arguably makes this challenge easier with a large number of drop in groups available but it wasn't until 2007 that I really got stuck into New Malden life. That year Rebecca started school, Louisa joined pre-school, I took over running the Village Voice and also joined the Malden Fortnight Committee. Yikes! Until then - with 2 small children - the extent of my involvement in Malden Fortnight had been standing on the pavement watching the parade go by whilst hearing tales of days gone by when

the parade was made up of hundreds of floats and stretched for miles – ok, slight exaggeration maybe, but you get my point. No longer! I wear a number of different hats on the committee and work with a truly dedicated group of people, some of whom take on huge roles each year - notably Jenny Hunt, David Wallis and Chair Peter Findlater. We've new members now on board too and recognise that for Malden Forntight to continue to add to, and build community, we also need support from you and also offer an all inclusive range of events. Last summer our 'fortnight' ran over the first 3 weekends of July , with over 20 events making up our programme. The theme we followed was 'Music and the Musicals' which gave children great scope for dressing up in our parade, not forgetting our more mature participants - Rotary as always threw themselves into the spirit with characters from the Wizard of Oz, a theme also chosen by Christ Church Primary who won the Best Walking Group Prize (again!)

illage Voice In 2011 celebrations will begin on Saturday 2nd July, ending on Sunday the 17th. Planning is already underway. The parade theme this year is Childrens' Fictional Characters, covering everything from books to films, and even comics. Choose your characters from a particular series - or even a nursery rhyme. I’m sure you’ll agree that he scope is HUGE. If you, your group or organisation would like to organise an event which will be widely promoted locally under the banner of Malden Fortnight and take place between 2nd- 17th July, then please get in touch. email info@maldenfortnight.com. To keep the Fortnight fresh, new ideas are always welcomed. As you may have read in December's Village Voice, local charity the Lunchbowl Network who have run the ever popular Cream Tea event as part of Malden Fortnight for the past five years, are hoping to organise an 'It's a Knock Out' style of family day. HISTORY

In 1880, when New Malden was only thirty years old, and with a population of less than 2500, there was great discussion in the village about the formation of a Working Men’s Club. Norbiton had a Working Men’s Institute in the 1860s, and Kingston’s Workmen’s Club had begun life in 1878. Another movement also popular at the time was those that preached temperance (anti liquor), and had instigated the opening of Coffee Taverns up and down the country. Strict rules The movement for a working men’s club in Malden was very strong, with the only problem to be resolved seeming to be its ideal location. It was agreed that any club should be open to everyone “no matter what their class or religious beliefs“. So, on 1st March there was a public meeting held at the school in Lime Grove to decide on a proposed club, but operated under strict temperance rules. The meeting was chaired by the Reverend Charles

Malden in pre Tudor times by Robin Gill Stirling, the first vicar of Christ Church, who stated that the idea for such a club was first put forward at the recent “Mothers Annual Tea “held at the church. A provident club had been formed to help its members in more difficult times, but it was felt that a more purely social organisation was needed in the village, especially for the working men who made up a large proportion of the population. He then called upon the Reverend George Simmons of the Baptist Church to speak. He agreed that a club had been needed for some time, and thought that working men would benefit from strict temperance principles. This was agreed with by the Rev Professor Bradshaw of Holy Trinity Church (which became the old Graham Spicer Institute), but he was unsure what “strict temperance principles” actually meant. He was told that no alcohol would be sold on the premises. Satisfied, he said that he also disapproved of smoking especially amongst the youths of the village as “wherever there was smoking there was drinking, and vice and misery generally followed in their train” Robert Bryant (Sycamore Grove) suggested that one pint of beer might be allowed as per a similar club in Teddington, and Charles Davis (Penrith Road) agreed, suggesting that this would attract more members. Others, such as Edward Stonehouse (Chestnut Grove) felt that for the club to be a success both financially and morally, the alcohol ban should be enforced. The chairman stated that members of the club didn’t have to be “total abstainers” they just had to go elsewhere for their beer. Robert McCulman (Kingston Road)said they needed the site of the club to be as central as possible, A new premises built by a local builder at the corner of Cambridge Road (present day site of Tudor Williams) was available for £650, and would suit the requirements. They had looked at other sites but one in Kingston Road was next to a pub, and another in Chestnut Grove was too far from the centre of the village. There was already a coffee house in Malden, but that was regarded as too small for their purposes. Mr James Pascall (Ambleside) [Founder of the sweet empire], and one of the founders of the Congregational Church (Now URC) u

NEW MALDEN’S VILLAGE VOICE History continued from page 9 felt that many entertainments should be provided such as billiards and dominoes, and also an outside area for quoits and bowling. Fund raising was then discussed, and as was normal in those days, a committee was formed to take the matter forward. Many names were proposed for this committee, but not one working man was initially included, and seeing that this club was for them, extra names were then added. Recommendations The committee reported back on 14th May to another meeting in Lime Grove. The chairman was Lord Brabazon a well known supporter of “clean living and physical health for the masses”. The committee had decided that the best course of action was to form a limited liability company, and were pleased to inform the meeting that nearly 800 shares had been applied for. 60 members had registered their interest, and some donations had been received. In fact, due the interest that had been shown, the committee put forward the idea

that later projects could include a public hall and public bath. They proposed to rent the premises on the corner of Cambridge Road and Malden Road for a year at £50 per annum with an option of another one/two years, or the purchase of the building for £650. Lord Brabazon had taken 200 shares, and Mr Charles Baring (Barings Bank) from Coombe had offered to take 50, as would Miss Elizabeth Christy (Coombe Bank). They would be no alcohol sold on the premises, and the Rev Simmons warned against allowing any form of gambling. Mr Davis hoped that accommodation could be found in the building where young men could lodge for the night maybe in small cabins. Mr Frederick Merryweather (Acacia Grove) then raised the important question of how many of the large shareholders were working men. The answer was none, and as the qualification of being a director of the company was the holding of ten shares, all working men would be excluded. Therefore it was agreed that the existing directors would be supplemented by an additional ten working men to

At a later meeting in June, it was decided that the building would be called the “Palm Tree Coffee Tavern”. 2000 shares of 10/- (50 pence) each were issued. By the end of July the premises were nearing being fitted out, ready for the opening.

latest newspapers and journals, a kitchen where food could be prepared and a scullery. The first floor had living space for the manager, a room where games could be enjoyed such as dominoes or chess, with a separate room for bagatelle with two tables.

Formal opening The official opening took place on 15th September performed by the Duchess Of Teck. Princess Mary, who lived at White Lodge in Richmond Park, was a granddaughter of George III, and sister to the Duke Of Cambridge (who owned much of the land in the New Malden area). She was also mother to the future Queen Mary (who later married to George V). Flags were hung from the houses in the village, and bunting stretched across the Malden Road. The building itself was ready to receive its royal visitor. On the ground floor there was a large coffee bar area, and a reading room equipped with the

Upon arrival, Princess Mary was handed a bouquet of flowers, arranged by John Haynes a local florist, and presented by Mary (Mittie) Stirling the vicar’s daughter. The New Malden Drum and Fife band erupted into the first six bars of “God Save The Queen” followed by cheers from the children of the local school. On entering the building Princess Mary was shown to a chair, and a prayer was said by the vicar, who then proceeded to formally welcome her. She was then presented with a poem written to specially commemorate the occasion by the Rev Professor Bradshaw. u

NEW MALDEN’S VILLAGE VOICE History continued from page 11 The Duchess then declared the Coffee Tavern open, and enjoyed a cup of coffee as did her husband and children who had accompanied her. After chatting to the assembled dignitaries, she inspected the building, and after their short visit, they left to great cheers from those assembled outside. Hard times Sadly the organisation was short lived, and closed down nine years later. With outstanding debts of nearly £300 and no assets or cash the liquidator (Mr Pascall) was left with no other option but to wind up the company. The name Palm Tree would still carry on as the manager Frederick Chieseman was taking the name to another premises in the Market Place. The coffee tavern had been struggling for the last couple of years due to lack of support, and only loans from Mr Pascall had kept it going.

Cornwall and was keen to start a drapery business. The upstairs of the premises were still used for meetings, and amongst the groups that used the rooms were the YMCA, and the Bible Study class run by Mr Graham Spicer before they moved across the road to the Institute. Nicholas and his family continued to trade downstairs until his wife died at the shop in February 1911. Nicholas soon lost interest, putting the shop up for sale, and returning to Cornwall. Newlyweds (John) Tudor Williams and his wife (Mary) Norah were visiting friends in Malden in 1913 and saw the “little black painted corner shop” was vacant, and decided to purchase it. In three years time they will be celebrating their centenary, truly a wonderful asset in the locality. NB: It is ironic to note that the original builder of the premises from New Malden had died in 1899 from a drink related illness. Maybe the Tavern wasn’t such a bad idea after all?

FOLLOW THE PLOT Jim and “The Gaffer”

Jim Mansbridge, a retired policeman, was full of ideas for developing the area. He helped clear the ground and rounded up his mates, all in their 70s, to dig out and fill the pond. Jim called Jean “The Gaffer”, and his friendship became one of the bonuses of the scheme for her. Jim had a wicked sense of humour. At the inaugural ceremony, “The Gaffer” narrowly escaped being thrown in by claiming that “it would not be ecologically sound”! Poor health finally put paid to Jim’s visits to the plot, but it was a source of great pride for him that the wildlife area bore his name. It’s communal projects like this that make allotment life so special. n

by Libby Rothwell At the lower end of our allotment site lies the entrance to a secret garden. For most of the year, it’s hidden by greenery. But on a stark January day you can’t miss it. On a corner where the path sweeps round towards the car park, there’s a bird table where robins squabble for seeds. Below is a white sign bearing the inscription: The Jim Mansbridge Wildlife Area. Who was Jim, I wondered, and how did the area come to be created? “Go and talk to Jean”, was the advice I was given. “It was Jean’s project”. Jean Galsworthy is a surprising woman. Judging by her two and a half productive plots, you might think she was a lifelong allotment addict. You’d be wrong. “I just wanted somewhere to burn garden prunings”, she admitted. “In 1990, local residents got a council leaflet inviting them to take on a vacant plot. They assured us you didn’t have to do anything on it.” How times change! For the annual sum of £7, she was allocated a half plot : a wilderness with a damson tree –and no damsons. Some would have sprayed the lot with weed killer. Not Jean. Never keen on pesticides, she decided to go completely organic. In this she was ahead of the trend. Armed with only an old sickle and a fork, she cleared the plot and planted lettuces and a herb garden. Soon, she was hooked. In October, she took on the derelict other half, “to stop somebody else messing about on my plot!” Two more followed. But with many plots still unlet, something had to be done to prevent the site being grabbed by developers. So Jean set about recruiting a band of enthusiastic volunteers to “get things moving”. Her efforts paid off. Working parties gradually cleared neglected plots and Open Days drew in a dozen new tenants. Perhaps Jean’s biggest triumph was to persuade the AGM to accept her plans to turn a triangle of land roughly 160 x 90 feet into a wildlife area. Most of this was left as cover for birds, foxes and badgers. The remainder, often flooded in winter, was dug out to form a pond, drainage ditches, bog garden and meadow area.

A VIEW FROM THE CITY 2011

by Justin Urquhart Stewart December Reform – Banks – Tax - Debt 2011 – The year of reform. Well that is my hope anyway; after all there is so much to do and so little time to radically reform old outdated processes. If 2010 was about a change of government and a change in economic policy, 2011 will see the first significant impacts of that change. We all know about the tax rises built in and the proposed cuts which will start to bite, but now the government should look to help on the growth and development side. Tax is a key place to start. I have mentioned before the complexity of our tax system, especially after the advanced tinkering of the Brown years which has just made its operations far worse and, in the view on many financial experts I respect, virtually unintelligible and incalculable. The basis of tax has to be one of fairness and being understandable – America went to war for less, just for representation.

illage Voice So some reforms: Stamp duty. This centuries old transaction tax dates back to 1694 as an impoverished monarchy sought ways to pay for yet another war against the French. Although the tax appears on stock exchange purchases, SDRT (Stamp Duty Reserve Tax), this seems somewhat of an anachronism when investment fees usually attract VAT. Surely it would be simpler to have one regime of tax which relates to value rather than transactions and encourage longer term investing rather than shorter term trading?

There is of course another Stamp Duty in the form of SDLT (Stamp Duty Land Tax). This is not a progressive tax but rather almost a slab tax as the higher rate bands applies to the whole sum when you cross the threshold of a higher band. This is a very regressive tax – it penalises the buyer and acts as a dissuader on people wishing to change property. This is a key issue if we are trying to create greater mobility of labour which you certainly won’t get if you can’t sell your old property very easily and then can’t find another one to buy! The authorities defend it as a useful earner – but I would question this as just how many property transactions are currently being completed? The answer is far fewer than before with the result that the UK Treasury has far less tax take from this source than they might have expected. Abolish it! Take away this deterrent from buying and instead I suspect the authorities would find that they would have earned far more from the VAT (as people carried out their redecorating and developing of their new property) than they would have from Stamp Duty. After all, you know full well that the first comment made by a prospective buyer is going to be – “that bathroom and kitchen are going to have to go and so will those carpets!” Thus an increasing demand for goods and, more importantly, the services from the builders, plumbers and decorators – more expenditure, more employment, more VAT. Income Tax and National Insurance. In reality these evil twins together make up our real Income Tax. Our politicians tend to refute this accusation as they see NI as our pension payment; however this should be countered by the question – so just how much is in the NI pension pot? To which the answer is simple – zero. UK governments have been running their own “Ponzi” scheme for years and just as unworthy as that run by that old jailbird Bernie Madoff. What we should be doing is to encourage people to

NEW MALDEN’S VILLAGE VOICE

save and provide more for themselves and thus a restructured NI could be designed whereby those who take greater financial responsibility for their family’s healthcare, old age care and pension could see a reduction in their NI payments. The effect over time would be to encourage greater responsibility and appreciation of one’s own personal circumstances to move this away from central government and back to the individual. Many will complain – but perhaps they might wish to think what it is going to be like to have to fall back on the impecunious largesse of the state for a niggardly state pension and especially poor quality old age care facilities. Sin taxes. These have always been applied “for the good health of the nation” and frankly few would disagree with alcohol and tobacco duties given their side effects and long term costs to the health service. So how about something more constructive for our health care – a fat tax – not on generously proportioned individuals, but a tax on fat and other dubious contents in our food. A

This is not a Marie Antoinette cake consumption moment, but rather to encourage (although the popular political term is now to nudge) people towards healthier food. We are never going to be a nation of rabbits, but we can at least encourage firms to produce healthier food with less fat and less hideous chemical concoctions. Fuel Duty. Would it not be better to address this according to where the pressure is most by way of congestion taxes, so that those who insist in going into crowded areas have to bear more cost and not to penalise those who have to drive further because they live in rural areas? Best wishes for a happy and successful 2011.n

SOAPBOX New Year! New Me? New Job? Or ‘Take A Chance on Me!

I guess like most people, we all make New Year’s resolutions and we try really hard to keep them. My big aim for 2011 is to 1) Run a 5K race 2) Get fit for my friend’s wedding and 3) Get a Training Contract so that I can qualify as a solicitor.

My first goal is not that difficult to plan. There are many websites that can design a personalised training programme for different distances. For example, Breakthrough Breast Cancer has training plans for 5K races, 10K races, half marathons and full marathons. Then, all I need is good shoes and clothes and the motivation to go out when it is cold, wet or snowy! My second goal should lead on from the first so, hopefully, in achieving one, I‘ll achieve the second goal. The wedding is in July so I have a full 6 months to get into shape and dazzle! (Not outshining the bride of course!!) No, it’s my third goal that has me worried. As most of my friends know, I have spent 4 years studying law; gaining Commendations in both my law conversion course and the Legal Practice course (LPC- the compulsory element for all aspiring solicitors). In order to qualify as a solicitor, I need to work as a Trainee for 2 years under a Training Contract with a law firm. And Training Contracts are like gold dust especially in these dire economic times. I have probably made about 60 applications over 3 years and have made it through to interviews and even in one case, made it to the final 12 (out of around 700 applicants) but still no TC. The Careers service at the College of Law cannot explain why; my CV is deemed excellent and I have fantastic references from people I have worked with both in my previous careers and from the law partner that I did my summer work experience with. I have come to my own conclusion; it is my A-level grades and the fact that I am not a 20-something law graduate. A friend of mine actually managed to see my application for a firm that he had obtained a Training Contract at and surprise, surprise; my A-level grades were circled in red. Furthermore, each year thousands of students complete the LPC without securing a Training Contract. So, the competition is fierce for the few available. It is very disheartening for me and my fellow students, who have made substantial sacrifices to pursue a legal career; we have studied hard and have often worked at the same time. Many of us have also become volunteers for legal charities; a role which I have done for over 2 years for a charity in Kingston but yet because we completed our A-levels over 20 years ago and are not in our 20’s, we are penalised. In fact, I know several people who have decided to return to their previous careers having spent 4-5 years studying law and spending tens of thousands of pounds. And it is not just the legal profession; many industries discard potential employees, even though it is illegal to discriminate based on age since the introduction of the Age Discrimination Act 2006. However, it is very difficult to prove since no-one is going to admit it.

To advertise in the

illage Voice

by Tanja Williamson A report in 2007 for the Office of National Statistics claimed that A-levels have become easier over the past 20 years. Researchers claimed that students who obtained C grades in the 1980’s would now be awarded A grades in most subjects whilst grades for Mathematics have jumped by 3 grades. Therefore, my 2 B’s and 1 C would now equate to one A*, one A and one B! Furthermore, as more and more pupils obtaining A/A* grades (27% in 2010 – see www.bbc.co.uk/news/ education-11012369) it is getting even more difficult to compare candidates. As I cannot turn back time, I feel that I may never qualify unless, as the Abba song goes, someone ‘Takes a Chance on Me’! However, I am fortunate in that I am working in a law firm; not in a legal role but I am hopeful that an opportunity will come along in 2011, so I am going to stick it out. So here is a resolution for all law firms and companies out there- don’t overlook candidates who are over 40 or even over 35. We have a wealth of experience and knowledge, are loyal, dependable (not many of us go out clubbing anymore!), we work hard and we stick at things. As it says in the song, “Take a chance on me Gonna do my very best and it ain’t no lie If you put me to the test, if you let me try” (Abba, ‘Take a Chance’) n

KIDS Employment for under 16s Most school age teens are keen to find part time work to earn some money. Aside from the financial benefit, in an increasingly competitive market, it’s useful to gain some experience of applying for work and taking on the responsibility of a job. There are two main aspects to consider as your teen (aged 13 to 15) takes their first steps into the world of work: the legalities and actually securing a job. For parents and guardians First of all, under the age of 16 there are employment restrictions on the hours and the type of work that can be undertaken. Below are just a few key rules but you can find more information at www. direct.gov.uk. • 13 is the minimum age for employment • The working day must be between 7am and 7pm • During term time a teen can work a maximum of 12 hours a week, and from Sunday to Friday there’s a limit of two hours a day. Up to 5 hours a day (aged 13 or 14) or 8 hours a day (aged 15) can be worked on Saturdays or school holidays. • During school holidays the limit is up to 25 hours (aged 13/14) or 35 hours (aged 15) a week. • The employer must provide an employment permit, the application form for which the parent or guardian signs. • There is no minimum wage for under 16s • There are some occupations such as factory work or work in pubs which are not permitted. For teens What about getting a job in the first place? There aren’t many around, so if one becomes available you’ll need to be quick and you’ll need to stand out from the crowd. If you see a job you are interested in applying for, send your request in as soon as possible. Often – if it’s unskilled work – an employer will take on the first person to apply. If you are old enough to take on a job, you are old enough to apply for it too. Why would any prospective employer choose an application from Mum or Dad over someone who had applied in person? By all means mention that your parents know you are making the application and that they will support you, but the first contact must come from you. (For parents: if your teen’s application is accepted, it is of course quite reasonable that you meet their employer before the job commences.)

If your application is by email, make sure your grammar, spelling and punctuation are faultless, don’t use texting shortcuts and proof read your mail before you send it off. Mails that say “i saw yr job ad and i am interested” will go straight into the recycling folder. It might be the norm to use short forms and lower case letters with your friends, but it’s not when applying for a job. Add some extra information about yourself. If you keep fit, do voluntary work, or have already had a job mention this in your mail too. You could even add in a photo. Don’t assume that just one mail is enough. If you are really keen, send another, make a phone call or even send a letter. Even if you are told the vacancy has been filled, send a reminder occasionally that you are still interested should another position become available (although don’t make a pest of yourself either!) Your primary goal in doing all this is to stand out from the crowd. If yours is the mail that has perfect spelling, you keep asking and you personalise your application in some way, then you are much more likely to land yourself some paid work. n

illage Voice Dear Local Resident, I hope you all enjoyed the festive season and I would like to start by saying Happy 2011!

POLICING Make ours a Safer Neighbourhood

I have decided this month to highlight to you an invaluable service that is offered in Kingston Upon Thames, that of support and care of domestic violence victims. This service has helped countless victims since it started in 2004 and the number of repeat victims has dramatically reduced. If you would like to discuss domestic abuse support services but not necessarily speak with the police, there is a contact number for the ‘One Stop Shop’ which is 07917 271 549. Early Intervention Early intervention at the One Stop Shop prevents the non crime domestic reports escalating to crime reports. Some victims present to the One Stop Shop before needing to report to the police. The aim of the project was to provide a One Stop service to all victims regardless of whether they had reported police. Crisis Intervention aims to provide information regarding all legal options, support with relocation and also to work with the victim to ensure the best possible solution. By working with victims and instilling confidence and trust in the working relationship the victim is more likely to report to the police. The One Stop Shop is based in the Baptist Church Hall in Union Street Kingston. There are now 10 agencies working in Partnership at the One Stop. A comprehensive service is provided in that someone can walk through the door and receive advice regarding injunctions, housing, health, welfare benefits and drug/alcohol issues. They also have the opportunity to be assigned a Victim Support volunteer for support or more practical support via the Hestia Floating support worker. The most recent addition to the service is the Health Visiting Team who are on hand to provide information and advice regarding the effects of domestic violence on children. Agencies Involved: Crisis Intervention (CSU), Community Safety Unit, Islamic Resource Centre, Victim Support Service, Health Visiting Team,Citizens Advice Bureau, Kaleidoscope ( drug & alcohol team), Hestia floating support (DV Outreach) Grants solicitors and Blacklaws Davis Solicitors

by Sgt Nick Ellis Wednesday’s Women This is a 10 week programme supporting those who have been victims of domestic abuse from continuing in violent relationships or entering into new relationships that may be violent or abusive. This programme works with those most at risk of repeat incidents and goes a long way to preventing repeat victimisation. The programme is facilitated by the Crisis Intervention Worker and the Chair of the Islamic Resource Centre and accepts referrals from Social Services, Courts, Police and all agencies along with selfreferral. Reports can be provided to agencies regarding the attendance and engagement of participants. From January 2010 this programme come in line with the Caring Dads programme. The idea is that the partners of men attending the Caring Dad’s programme will be invited

POLICING Make ours a Safer Neighbourhood to attend the group; this will ensure that there is partner contact throughout the time that the men are on the programme. Wednesday’s Women has had very good results so far in that of the 40 women that have completed the course 36 of them have remained free from violence (no reported incidents to police). It is suffice to say that with the co-ordinated community response evident in the Royal Borough of Kingston, the victims of Domestic Abuse are provided with a wealth of services that will offer support to them regardless of whether they chose to engage with police. The ethos in Kingston is very much one that the victim safety is central to the process of investigation and intervention. To this end the services involved with domestic abuse provision network well and share information along strict but effective protocols. This in turn provides an example of best practice, early intervention and effective reduction in repeat victimisation.

Julee

I am a REPS level 3 Personal Trainer. I am also a Salsa and Zumba Instructor. I specialise in helping people tone up and lose weight. I was winner of NABBA Miss Britain Novice Figure 2009. I provide 1:1 personal training or 1:2 personal training. Testimonial: “My Name is Nici Maskell, I’m 35 years old and a member of the Malden Centre. I had my last child in November 2009 and wanted to get my body in the best shape possible. I hired Ju-Lee from September 2010 and have been seeing her twice a week and am now seeing the results. My weight has now fallen from 74 – 65KG and my size from 14 – 12. She pushes me, but it has been worth it. I’ve had lots of positive comments from friends, as well as having a new found confidence. If you want to change your body, get toned and fit, I would highly recommend her, it’s given me such a boost.”

COMPETITION

Go Kingston 2012 Design Competition for Schools

Help us to create a brand for Kingston’s Olympiad Celebrations Project Brief - Active Sports and Arts would like to invite schools and colleges to submit ideas for a logo that will be turned into our logo by a professional designer to help us brand Kingston’s Cultural Olympiad programme in 2011 and 2012. We are looking to create a versatile and inspiring logo for the programme which can be used across all our marketing materials as well as on different websites. The logo needs to incorporate the words Go Kingston 2012, it will need to work well on large posters and banners, but it should be simple enough to reduce down in size to work on a letterhead or A5 brochure. It can be in colour, but it should be clear enough to work in black and white. Why we need a logo As the branding for the Olympics is tightly controlled we need our own distinctive brand to help publicise a four week celebratory programme in 2011, as part of the official countdown to the Olympics and a fourteen week programme in 2012. The programme will be marketed by Visit London through a Culture Diary which will detail all the events planned across London from 21 June to 9 September in 2012. The logo should therefore reflect what is special about Kingston to encourage residents and visitors to come to Kingston and celebrate with us. The logo could reflect our heritage, our landmarks, our people and our aspirations. Kingston’s Olympic legacy will be to focus on volunteering, whether it’s for London 2012 or for local organisations, the key thing is everyone will have the opportunity to get involved. This is your chance to get creative and see your designs used to promote Kingston to the rest of London, the UK and the world! The designs will be judged and the best will be selected for public display. The winner will be invited to the chosen graphic design company to see their logo created. There will also be prizes for the winner and the runners up in each age group category. The categories are Primary School – Secondary School – Colleges/University (for students 25 years and under) What you can’t use As there are strict rules governing the use of the Olympic icons, this means you cannot use images of the Olympic torch, the Olympic rings, the Paralympic Emblems, Team GB logo or the words London 2012. So please take this into account when designing your logo. What is the Cultural Olympiad? In 2012 the culmination of the four year Cultural Olympiad will begin on 21 June with major celebratory events planned to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on the 4 and 5 June. All London boroughs are committed to participating in the Cultural Olympiad and the London-wide festival during this period. In Kingston we are working towards developing a 14 week celebratory programme which will begin with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee through to the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games on 9 September. In July this year Active Sport and Arts used the strap

Closing date 18th Feb 2011 line ‘Go Kingston’, to launch its first official Cultural Olympiad event. This was part of ‘Open Weekend’ a national celebration to mark the countdown across the country to 2012. How to Submit Your Design • The deadline for submission is Friday 18th February 2011. • Designs can be submitted as PDFs or Jpegs and emailed to:- Gokingston2012@rbk.kingston.gov.uk •All the designs from your school/college should be collated and sent in one batch with the attached form. •Please save each jpeg using the school name, plus a number, so that we can then match each design to the pupil who has created the artwork, eg Latchmere 1. Please ensure they are of a sufficient size and quality for us to see each design clearly. Each attachment should not be any larger than 1MB. •Artwork can be scanned on photocopiers to create the jpegs • While we would prefer to receive designs by email, original designs no bigger than an A4 sheet can be sent by post (with the cover form) to: Go Kingston 2012 Active Sports & Arts Guildhall 2 Kingston KT1 1EU n

Services The Year Ahead in Your Local Libraries

As part of this change we will also be introducing a new Library Management System (the computer program that manages our catalogue and borrower records) in 2011. This new system will have many benefits for customers, including Web 2.0 personalisation of services, book reviews, borrowing recommendations and social networking facilities to connect with other users. Library members will have a greater choice than ever before, not only in terms of the breadth of stock to borrow, but also in how they use library services. With an increased range of online services, including book renewals, reservations, reference materials and much more; self-service machines in the four large libraries to save queuing when borrowing or returning books, and friendly staff on hand to offer help or advice it’s very much a case of “Your Library, Your Way.” Another exciting event for 2011 is the continuation of the ‘Muybridge Revolutions’ exhibition at Kingston Museum. Running until March 19th, this

by Adam Moore The past year has seen many changes to the libraries in Malden, including the retirement of the manager at Old Malden library, increased opening hours and a new collection of e-books and e-audiobooks that library users can read and download at home.

The year ahead will also bring many exciting improvements, and planning for 2011 involves preparing for the Royal Borough of Kingstonupon-Thames to join the London Libraries Consortium. It also links in with a major Muybridge retrospective running at Tate Britain at the same time. The Library Service values enormously the support it receives from our local communities. DAD’S DIARY

illage Voice the road to avoid you - it is because you look a) ridiculous and b) like you are talking to yourself.

O misery, misery, mumble and moan! by Ian Duncan Someone invented the telephone, And interrupted a nation's slumbers, Ringing wrong but similar numbers. Ogden Nash Don't leave me hanging on the telephone Did you get a shiny new mobile for Christmas? (Has your ten year old managed to explain how to use it yet?) If so, you weren't alone, they are an amazingly ubiquitous technology - there are about 4.6 billion global mobile subscribers, according to the International Telecommunications Union, twothirds of the world's population. Everybody seems to loves using them, to keep in touch with friends, get the latest news or play new games. However, given that they can also be so annoying, I'm not convinced that they make the world a better place:

Hello! What makes the mobile phone so enthralling that people have to answer it / play with it / text with it all the time - even if they are doing something else (A friend recently had to ban her daughters from texting at the dinner table). How many times do you see people walking down the street with friends or family having a loud conversation with someone else. Are the people you are with / at the event you are at so un-important that you can't give them your full attention for a few minutes? In particular do you need to use your phone:  While eating. No phone calls is so important it can't wait until you've taken that cheese and pickle sandwich out your mouth before starting your chat.  At the cinema. You're watching a gripping new

I'm on the train! Okay, you're on the phone. Fantastic, bully for you. Do you have to broadcasting it to everyone in a hundred yard radius by talking in a voice that a town crier would deem too loud? (Scientists at Cornell University, New York recently discovered why we find this so annoying: it takes more effort for the brain to understand only half a conversation compared with a full dialogue between two people. They found that people could not predict what the person talking into the mobile would say next - because they had not heard the last words from the person on the other end of the phone. The brain has to work twice as hard to understand the conversation and fill in the blanks, requiring more attention and making it harder to shut out.) The Sound of Silence When the latest Jay-Z song is being aired as a ring tone on the bus by a phone touting wannabe scally, is it so wrong to long for a world where silence is indeed golden and conscription still in place? Are you talking to me? Do you use one of those bluetooth wireless earpiece and microphone sets while walking down the street and wonder why people are crossing

film, or play, pulled in by the drama, the acting, the thrilling story. As the lead character leans in for a heartfelt kiss they receive unnecessary backing from a symphony of ring tones, ruining the experience for everyone just because someone couldn't bear /was to absent-minded to turn it off. ď Ź When driving. Research indicates that you are also four times more likely to crash, injuring or killing themselves and/or other people when using a mobile phone when driving. (The person who inspired this article I saw not driving, but cycling along Coombe Road, toddler on the crossbar, talking on their mobile phone.) imo Then there's text language. I once received a text, admittedly from an 18 year old nephew, featuring only initials and abbreviations. It made less sense than cricket does to an American. Employers complain that they can no longer find young recruits who can spell. It is, imo (In my opinion), hardly surprising given there propensity to they use 'lol' rather than laughing out loud. Falling literary standards - mobiles are even to blame for them.
