Greetings!

Not long to go before our Christmas decorations go up - probably around the time you get this! When the children were younger I’d put off getting the tree up as it minimised the amount of time available for it to be knocked over.... but as the decoration collection grew, I joined the line of thinking that if you’re going to go to the trouble of putting it all up, you may as well enjoy it for as ling as possible. And enjoy it we do. They’re not for everyone, but i do LOVE fairy lights (white and warm glow) and now have rather a lot of them. The ones in the kitchen and garden have been up since fireworks party 2012 - we’re now used to them but ducking motion is required if you’re taller than me (not difficult!). The ones winding up the stairs actually went up in November 2011. Brian (the husband) was sent off to Dallas for ‘a couple of weeks’ and the girls and I were home alone - something we’d not done for more than a week at a time until then. I recall saying to a very wise friend how much I hated the ritual of turning the last light off at bedtime, to which she replied ‘why not leave it on then!’ Wise words indeed. And so the rather long string of LED lights went up. The ‘couple of weeks’ turned into five, with Brian just making it home by the skin of his teeth from Dallas on 23rd December. And very pleased to see him we all were too. And when he went back for January and February the lights stayed up and just never came down! And at this time, let’s try to remember that not everyone is fortunate to have family around them or people living with them. So let’s all see how we can help a neighbour, or member of our community who may not feel so festive and warm at this time of year. Wishing you all very happy Christmas!

People Anne Brightwell

On Wednesday 20 November Ann Brightwell (formerly Packer) returned to Coombe Girls School to give a Presentation on her “Olympic journey”.

Ann won a Gold and Silver medals in the 800 and 400 metres respectively at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics whilst at the same time being a PE Teacher at Coombe Girls School. Showing the same determination she had at these Olympics she braved the wind and rain by travelling from her home in Congleton, Cheshire, by arriving without any fuss or ceremony and on time at New Malden. After enjoying lunch with Jenny Stuart (editor of Village Voice) and others at Chiccos she went to Coombe Girls for the hour long event. Students recounted Ann’s connection with Coombe Girls’ School and her achievements and said “we’ve been inspired by Ann Brightwell, we hope you will be too”. Ann was a gym teacher at what was then called Coombe County Girls’ School. She said that she has never forgotten the generosity of the Head, Governors, and staff for allowing her time away from school to compete in the 1964 Tokyo summer Olympic Games. She recounts “many of my peers had to take unpaid leave, which was difficult then because athletics was seen as an amateur sport”. Ann famously won Gold in the 800m event. She was the first of 9 British women to win a track medal. Ironically, 400m was her true event but she says that she participated in the 800m to build her stamina. Students cheered enthusiastically as they witnessed video footage of Ann’s amazing final sprint to the finishing line. The video was accompanied by a motivational speech from Ann who emphasised the importance of “perseverance, hard work and resilience”. She told the eager year 7s, “The one who wins is the one who thinks she can”. It was therefore no surprise that they were bursting with questions for her such as “how many medals have you won?” and “what were you thinking when you started to win?”. After the presentation, students were able to meet with Ann Brightwell and said “it was fantastic to meet an actual sporting legend. She was awesome and knew just how to make sport exciting. I can’t believe I actually met an Olympic athlete. She gave some really good advice. I’m going to make sure I never give up.” Coombe Girls School has been honoured by Ann’s return to the school. She said “I’ve been so excited about coming back. I haven’t been back since 1965 when I showed my medals to the students”. Jacqueline Jennings, the organiser of the event at the school, said “The students found Ann extremely motivational. We hope that they will be inspired by Ann’s achievements as they approach their own sporting journey projects over the next term.” A huge thanks also to Chris and Elspeth Coke for initiating and facilitating this visit. Events Christmas Ding Dong for Diabetes

6th December Hi. My name is Freddie and I am 8 years old. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. What has happened in last two years? Well I’ve had……… Lots of injections, blood tests, hospital appointments, hypos, hypers, carb counted meals, apple juices and bottles of lucozade but most of all help and support from my friends (new and old) and a charity called JDRF. Oh by the way…JDRF is not only the only charity that is trying to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes but also researches into ways of making our lives easier. www.jdrf. org.uk

That’s enough about me! What have my family been doing? Our first event was a ‘Walk to cure Diabetes’ in Hyde Park. Even our dog Minnie was given a medal! Then Mum ran a half marathon last year on her 40th birthday so we all went to cheer her on. I think we were more exhausted than she was at the end because Dad had a promised that we would be at a lot of places along the route! And now……… Mum, along with a super group of friends, is organising A Christmas Ding Dong for Diabetes at Christ Church New Malden on Dec 6th. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. We are thrilled to announce that not only is Tim Vine hosting the event but Amelia Lily (from X factor) is singing an acoustic carol. Local talent will be represented by school choirs and bands and there will also be a raffle and auction kindly sponsored by Barclays Bank. There might also be a surprise or two too!!!! Tickets go on sale early November at a cost of £10 for adults and £5 for children. Check availablity dingdongdiabetes@weebly.com or email janeeglin@aol.com.

Sir Anthony Alfred Caro 1924-2013 Anthony Caro who died on 23rd October, was born at Voewood in Malden on 8th March 1924. The Caro family had moved into the house between February and September 1919 just months after the death of its previous owner Graham (Prockter) Spicer. The house stood approximately where Voewood Close now stands off Motspur Park, well back from the road. Anthony was the third and youngest child of Alfred Haldenstein Caro a stockbroker and his wife Mary Rose Edith. The eldest son Peter Jack was born in August 1918 in Liverpool whilst his father was serving as a Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps. The second child a daughter Rachel Alice was born at Voewood thirteen months later (4th September 1919). The family left the house after six years in 1925, eventually moving further down in Surrey to Churt. Anthony had no memories of the house as he was only a year old when they left, but his sister remembers her parents owning horses, and they used to ride from the house to Richmond Park. Not a journey I would like to make in today’s traffic! She also had vivid memories of being pushed in a pram to watch the very early stages of the building of the Kingston By Pass. This must have been around the spring of 1924. Sadly, Rachel passed away at Galsworthy House Nursing Home Kingston Hill in April this year. Originally called The Alders and built by Charles Blake around 1897, Voewood was a large detached house with three floors. Although no pictures are available, we know that an entrance hall had drawing and dining rooms leading off to a large conservatory. There was also a library, a billiard room, and a large kitchen. Upstairs, there were five bedrooms, attics and box rooms. At the entrance to the grounds there was a lodge house which was still standing in the 1960s. The 6 acres of grounds were well laid out with a double garage, a dairy, a gardener’s cottage, and another house containing four rooms and a kitchen. I will leave it to others more qualified to write about Anthony Caro’s career. His website states that he has been a key figure in contemporary sculpture for half a

century. He studied sculpture at the Royal Academy, and worked as a part time assistant to Henry Moore. Working mostly in bronze, he becomes famous for his large sculptured forms. He then starts working with prefabricated metals linking them together for his compositions. Specialising in Modernism and Abstract Art, he is regarded as one of the greatest of his generation.

New Malden History Bright sparks (part 1) by Robin Gill In 1894 New Malden became an urban district (previously a local government district), and acquired both Coombe and Old Malden in January 1895 becoming The Maldens and Coombe. With such an expansion of area, many services were extended (e.g. mail, sewerage, and water), and some which didn’t exist, became a necessity.

Woodfield House (now flats) stood at the junction of Malden Road and Blakes Lane. The flats were built in the 1950s, but the house that stood there previously dated back to the 1890s, and later became a hotel. It was also the home of Henry Jenkins an initially prosperous East India merchant. Mr Jenkins is important in the history of Malden because he was the gentleman who brought forward the proposal of forming a fire service to cover Malden and Coombe.

Fanning the flames As a councillor for Old Malden, he brought the idea to a council meeting in December 1895. He requested that £400 be set aside to establish a brigade to cover the seven miles that formed the new district. At that time they had to rely on the Kingston Brigade, and they (Kingston) could take as much as 40 minutes to reach Malden, and by then, much property and possibly lives, could be lost. Mr Jenkins thought that a lot of money was being spent on expanding the district, and the increased population (circa 5,500) expected to be protected against fire. Out of the £400, £325 could be spent on a “first class engine”, 1,000 feet of hose, scaling ladders, together with uniforms and helmets for 12 men. The funds could be borrowed by the council and repaid over 20 years at £30 per annum, not necessitating an increase in the rates. The remaining £75 could be spent on a shed for the engine. Charles Andrews also a councillor offered to give up some of his garden in Coombe Road to house the appliance. Mr Jenkins stated there would be plenty of willing volunteers from the local inhabitants, and the cost of maintenance would be low. The council being a council however, decided to form a committee with Mr Merryweather as chairman to look into all the arrangements to be made. The matter became more urgent just before Christmas when a fire broke out at the cheesemongers shop belonging to Mr Charles Sass in the Market Place. One of the gaslights had set fire to some of the stock, fortunately damage was limited, and the fire was put out by those on the premises. Kindling This made the first meeting of the “Fire Brigade Committee” held on New Year’s Eve 1895 more important. At this meeting, it was decided to raise a volunteer fire brigade called “The Maldens And Coombe Fire Brigade”. Accommodation for the engine and appliances (when purchased), was to be found at approximately £10 per year. For practice, a pair of horses

was to be hired at 7/6 (per pair), but if they were needed for a fire, the owner would be paid 2 guineas (£2 10pence). It was also decided to appoint the council surveyor Thomas Vincent Herbert Davison to be the Chief Fire Officer. The service would require a modern manual engine capable of being worked by 22 men. The discharge from the hose should be 100 gallons of water each minute, and be able to reach 100 feet. The hose should be made of canvas, and a thousand foot in length. Additionally the service would require all necessary tools and appliances, uniforms, boots, and helmets for 2 officers and 11 men. The following month the committee received a letter from Thomas George Clements who lived at 1 Acacia Grove, offering to house the engine, and provide a room for the service at £10 a year. Gas would be laid on in the shed. The offer was accepted, and the engine was ordered from Shand Mason & Co at a cost of £214

17shillings and 6pence. The next job was to ensure that fire plugs were situated at suitable points throughout the local area. These plugs were inserted into the mains and could be released to allow water to be used by the fireman’s hoses. Of course pressure had to be maintained, and for that close contact had to be kept between the fire service and the local turncock John Harry, who lived in Grafton Road. It was his job to ensure that the area received an adequate water supply from Lambeth Water at certain times of the day, literally turning the water on and off. First crew Sixteen men volunteered, had to pass a medical, and twelve were selected for the brigade with four reserves. Things really started moving in May when the brigade took receipt of the engine and appliances. Cards were sent to every house in the district, announcing the existence of Est 35 YEARS the brigade, and where it could be found. The Kingston Gas Company were asked to place a red lamp opposite the entrance to Acacia Grove, and red plaques were erected with the wording “To The Fire Station” Inspections of the fire plugs then took place and were found to be unsatisfactory, being too small for the brigade’s standpipe. Rather than replace all the fireplugs, the brigade decided to buy a smaller standpipe. Also being bought was a chimney pump and hose. Young Wallpapering Frederick Harding, who lived in Cambridge Road, was selected as the first call-boy. His job was to knock on the INTERIOR & EXTERIOR doors to rouse each of the firemen when an alarm was PRIVATE & RESIDENTIAL raised. Mr Clements who house the engine offered to hire out two horses at 2 guineas for each call out, which the High Quality committee were happy to agree to, but would only pay 1 WORK AT LOCAL RATES guinea if it turned out to be a false alarm. Experienced professional Ready for action By the end of 1896 the brigade were ready for action Tradesman and inquired of the Fire Brigade at Kingston whether CALL FOR FREE ESTIMATE they would give them their curricle. A curricle was a two wheeled open cart on which could be placed either a pump for water supply, or ladders. The curricle could be RECOMMENDATIONS drawn by horse or men. In February 1897 the local police were informed that FULLY INSURED if a fire took hold between the George Inn on Kingston A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS Hill, and Kingston Vale, the Malden Brigade should be EMail: robinsonandson@talktalk.net called, instead of the Kingston Engine. the brigade were then insured by the Ocean Accident Insurance Company against accidents for £100 each, the premium being 4/8, there were also enquiries made as to membership of the National Fire Brigade Union which had been formed in 1887. Directions for the public as to how to report a fire were placed on a board outside the fire station, as they waited for their first emergency. The brigade was kept busy will regular drills, and started attending displays. A hospital exhibition in Kingston was followed by a place in the parade as Richmond celebrated Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in June. The following weekend the brigade was on more familiar territory as they celebrated the jubilee in Old Malden. A large bonfire in the form of a house had been built in a field near to the church. The “house” was filled with barrels of tar, and set alight as part of the brigade’s demonstration. A mock alarm was raised, and a call went up for the brigade (who were in attendance), and soon the engine, pump and hose were in operation. One of the firemen, who had dressed as a woman, was

“rescued” from the top window of the “building”. The fire was then extinguished. Whilst (fortunately), no emergency callouts had been received, the brigade were in a state of readiness. Adding to their protective clothing, they found a local supplier for their boots in Alfred West of Grafton Road, buying 8 pairs at 30/- a pair. Purchases also included tunics, trousers, helmets, and life liners (protective hoods). But all was not right in the brigade.... Maybe, because the future was uncertain, people in Malden seemed to try harder to enjoy themselves in that last summer before the war. It is true to say, life in Malden would never be the same again. illustrations 1) Council chamber in Town Hall (Now Waitrose) 2) Council Outing To Box Hill

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart In 2012, 484,224 new businesses were registered in the UK, up from 440,600 in the previous year and almost a world away from an average of around 150,000 to 180,000 back in the 70’s and 80’s. Something has changed and it appears to be quite a fundamental alteration in the UK economy. The smaller to medium sized enterprises (SMEs, defined as having less than 250 employees) are actually the life blood of the UK economy, with more employment and investment than the traditional

leviathans that we normally hear about. People, despite the fears from the banks and the nerves of the media, seem to be far more willing than ever before to risk everything, put the house on the line and have a go at running their own business. This is in spite of the failings of the banking system and our structural failing in the UK to financially support start ups effectively (back to my rants on peer to peer lending again). I find this not just remarkable but very encouraging. As I have mentioned before, we now have a record number of active companies in the UK (3.1 million), and this is despite the financial environment and a tax regime only marginally conducive to supporting the entrepreneur. I grant that this has improved a little, but as we have a new breed of politicians who have never had a job, and civil servants who have never risked their assets, I suppose that this is hardly surprising. Going back to the late 90’s we used to have an excellent lunch time television show on BBC2 called Working Lunch, and one of their great highlights was

the focus on small and developing businesses. This was done neither in the pseudo drama of Dragon’s Den, nor with the facile game show that is The Apprentice, but rather with real stories of business striving and thriving in and amongst all the economic issues that the businesses had to face. Another statistic I found was that start ups and small businesses make up 95% of all companies and employ more than 7 million people, out of a working population of just a tad under 30 million. Now let’s be realistic. Around half of these companies will sadly die within three years, but at a rising run rate like this, surely this has to be one of the most supportive pieces of economic and business news we have seen lately. So did this astonishing number reach the headlines? No - barely a mention - although page 4 of the Financial Times (at the bottom of the page) had a modest comment. As Brits we are of course somewhat reluctant to shout about our successes, but on the other hand it’s about time we gave ourselves a dose of confidence that something tangible is being achieved. Oh and please don’t let me hear any politician claiming any thanks for this. They haven’t put up their house, they haven’t stayed awake at night wondering if the business is going to be there in the morning, and I wonder if they have ever had that fear of putting your cash card in to

the bank machine to find that you are down to your last sous. Even now I hope that one day we will have a Chancellor that really understands the triggers that can help smaller businesses to get them going, not in give-aways, but sensible incentives for investment and returns, and encouraging capital and investment allowances. The UK has a poor reputation for business investment and anything that can help this has to be a benefit. Christmas

Sheep lost in New Malden. Can ewe help find them?

Around 30 sheep have gone astray in the High Street and we need young detectives to seek them out and record their whereabouts. The (knitted) sheep come in a variety of styles and sizes (they are ewe-nique) but all are believed to be hiding in shops up and down the High Street. You might even be able to see some in shop windows if you look closely. Each sheep has a name tag around its neck so if you happen to spot any when you are out and about Christmas shopping, it would be great if you could make a note of their names and locations. Please collect an entry form from the Methodist Church anytime from 29 th November and start noting down names of sheep. Return the finished form to the church on Saturday 21st December 10am-5pm or at the Christingle service at 5pm on Christmas Eve. All completed forms will receive a small prize. Thank ewe for helping find our sheep.

There is a general collection box if you are undecided, having seen the high standard of all the entries. Please come and see this festive forest in both daylight and in the dark (on the afternoon of Saturday 21st December) when the twinkling lights create a magical display. • from 10.00am till 2.00pm on Saturday 14th December • all weekdays from 16th December until Christmas Day 10.00am-2.00pm • Saturday 21st December 10.00am -5.00pm with Community Carols in the coffee bar at 12.00 noon and an informal Christmas sing-along at 4.00pm. week, encouraging all staff to read a book that week, helping to share and make books available for others agreeing to sponsor

New Malden Reads Together “Book” yourself in for a community-wide reading festival! Monday 10th February – Friday 14th February 2014.

An exciting new project – which was first developed in Dunbar, Scotland – looks set to hit the headlines in New Malden as staff from three of our local primary schools come together to launch a new book week for the community. “New Malden Reads Together Week” (Monday 10th – Friday 14th February 2014) – has been developed to simply encourage everyone to start talking about books! Whatever your age, hobbies, occupation or taste in books, this new community campaign has been designed with everyone in mind and the teachers behind the project are really urging as many people as possible to become involved. Mrs Izzy Rickards, Deputy Headteacher at Christ Church Primary School, New Malden, says; “The aims of this exciting new initiative are really quite simple – to create a ‘buzz’ in the community about reading and to promote the enjoyment and fun factor of getting stuck into a good book. “Along with teachers from Burlington Junior School, Corpus Christi and our friends at New Malden library, we are really trying to spread the word to recruit as many volunteers and role models as possible. We know that so often children will look up to and listen to someone who inspires them – and that someone could be their football or rugby coach, their ‘Brown Owl’ or Scout Leader or maybe even the staff in their favourite toy shop! Essentially, we believe that more people we can persuade to help promote our ‘New Malden Reads Together Week”, then more chance we have of persuading our children that reading is a fantastic hobby that stays with you forever!” There are many ways in which local residents, organisations, book club and businesses could become involved with the new project including promoting the

32

to read or even elements of the event? Mrs Rickards adds; “We’ve had a few planning meetings already and we’re starting to come up with some great ideas to help us kick off this ‘reading revolution’. Everything from a “book swap shop” at the station and ‘extreme reading’ challenges to a communitywide a SOAR day – which essentially means Switching Off our phones, gadgets, TVs and computers And Read!! The opportunities are endless, so if you’d like to get involved, then we’d love to hear from you!” To find out more, please contact Izzy Rickards on: yricka1@ccnm. rbksch.org.

Adolph Hitler and me Part 2 By Michael Wood

(adapted with permission from his work on The Hereford Chronicle) herefordchronicle.co.uk

I do have other memories of daytime air activity which probably date from this period. They are almost exclusively of Spitfires and Hurricanes flying low over the rooftops. I cannot ever remember seeing a German aircraft very clearly, they were either too high or so low they were gone before I could get a good look. However the noise of the engines was perhaps more important and distinctive, and I think that a great deal of recognition was by this means. To this day two sounds send a tingle down my spine. The first is an air raid siren. The second is a Merlin engine. Merlins were installed in Hurricanes, Spitfires, Mosquitoes and other aircraft. Spitfires and Hurricanes were very common, I probably heard them every day for about four years. Around 65 years later I occasionally hear the same distinctive sound. It just

stops me in my tracks. The sound is made by one of the very few preserved Spitfires and Hurricanes flying to or from summer air show. However, it is different. It took me some time to work out that the aircraft which fly over my house now, are being nursed along at low or minimum throttle setting. During the war, the planes were always flying fast and the Merlin engine would be at half or full throttle. My father often told of an event which happened, during the battle of Britain, or as I have recently discovered on the 16th of August 1940, while we were living at number 21, Park View. The next door neighbours were the Tamblyns, mother, father and four daughters. All of the female members of the family were rather large. He was visiting them during a daylight raid, when they heard the sound of falling bombs. All five women dived under the sideboard. Some got their top half under, but none could get all of their hips in. Then came the explosion of the bombs from some distance away. Dad said that the sight of the five backsides lined up was very funny anyway, but because because of the release of tension and because the girls were convulsed with laughter, he just could not stop laughing. As my father was fighting fires at the London docks at the time of the other significant daylight raids on New Malden, I am now sure that this incident occurred on

the 16th of August 1940. Furthermore it is likely that the bomb which he heard was the one which fell on Alric Avenue about 300 yards to the north east of Park View. As the raiders approached from the south west and they were at a fairly low level the bomb would have been released as they plane passed over Park View! It is strange that I have no memory of the events of the 16th of August or of my parents speaking of them. It is no wonder that my mother was so frightened of the bombing. It is also strange that there is no mention of the raid in the accounts of the Battle of Britain which I have read. It is usually stated that the raid on Berlin on the 25th of August was in retaliation for the one on Croydon on the 15th of August which although it did cause some sixty deaths was obviously accidental. The raid on New Malden is never mentioned even though it was deliberate and the machine gunning of the passengers at the railway station made it clear that it was a terror attack. The period from May 1941 when the worst of the night time bombing ended until the Spring of 1944 when the V1 flying bombs started to endanger us, was for me a period of stability. I have many memories, but I cannot say whether they happened in 1941 or 1944, indeed most of them were ongoing routine. I know that night time bombing was at its height in the winter 1940 to 1941 with 71 major raids on London, but it seems to me looking back that there was always the threat of a raid. We usually went upstairs to bed and would be awakened by the sound of the siren. Mum would come and get my sister Yvonne, and we would go to our

shelter. To this day in my mind I have an image of my mother coming down the stairs holding Yvonne still asleep in a big bundle of bedclothes. As I sit visualising this I am struck how dim everything is, probably only one 40 watt light bulb. When the night time raids were at their height we only had a makeshift shelter which consisted of a massive wardrobe with some timber placed on top and fixed to a wall. We later had a Morrison indoor shelter. We would stay there until the ‘all clear’ came. As all the street lights were turned off and blackout was enforced it was very dark when you looked outside unless there was a moon. I can remember looking out and seeing the glow of fires in the distance, but very few bombs fell on New Malden. Some houses had been destroyed and occasionally a bomb would fall and break all the windows in a street. I can remember seeing men replacing the glass in whole streets of houses. They were miraculously quick. Oiled silk was also used to make temporary repairs. I know that at once or twice we had some windows broken. This may have been caused by a small bomb which fell in the park in front of us but I think that a very large anti aircraft gun may have done the damage. This gun was mounted on railway trucks and would be drawn up and down the railway line which ran about 100 yards from our house. When this gun was fired close to our house it was so loud, it was as if the end of the world had come. My Magical Garden

Reaching out to all children and parents who feel a little lost in the big wide world, My Magical Garden is an enjoyable, interactive and easy-to-use self-help book. A collection of illustrations and poems, this pioneering book has been written to help children, from the age of five, work through their emotions and express them in a safe and loving way. They are invited on an enchanted journey through a magical garden where, on each page, they get to choose their surroundings. In order to help the child and their parents understand their choices, the book's authors have created an 11-page appendix at the back of the book. Here, they give an expert explanation for every decision the child has made. Say for example the child chooses a dragon to accompany him on his journey, this may mean that they are seeking protection and encouragement to overcome their fears, as the dragon represents protection, strength, courage and mystery. It's an extremely helpful and insightful tool for both the child and parent. It offers the adult a unique way to understand what the child is going through and how best to aid them. For those growing up in the modern world, childhood can be a difficult and stressful time. This can have a huge impact on their life and may prevent them from reaching their full potential. Now more than ever there is a great need for all children to be empowered and to awaken their intuition. My Magical Garden encourages the child to tap into their imagination by getting them to create their own magical

garden, giving them a safe place to go in their mind during times of stress, fear or sadness. It also offers an opportunity to nurture the bond between parent and child. The experience is magical. There is a guided meditation CD to complement the book. It guides the child through the same choices, allowing them to develop their imagination, visualization skills and helps with their practice of meditation thus helping them to create inner peace. It can be purchased from www. holistichealing4children.com The book costs ÂŁ3.99 and is available from Amazon.

It has been almost a year since Cooking Your Spanish started in Worcester Park. After our pilot course we also organised different courses in SCOLA, Sutton, and in Wallington School. The experience was so rewarding and the feedback so great that we decided to open our own “kitchen” in Fitzroy House. Both the beginner and intermediate courses in Autumn were fully booked and our students loved the experience: “This is such a good way to learn. The class very quickly felt like spending a social evening with friends” (David); “I felt so comfortable and more confident in speaking in front of others” (Jenny) New courses in 2014! When promoting our courses at the Worcester Park fairs and in Waitrose, we had the chance to talk to a lot of you who showed interest in lunch time courses and also, Cooking Your Spanish for the Family. We are pleased to announce that from January we will also organise lunch time courses from 12pm to 1.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (see the flyer). Furthermore, our courses for the family (parents and kids from 8 to 11 years old) will be at lunch time on Sundays. At every session, two new tapas will drive you and your best classmate through the language of Cervantes and Rafa Nadal. Learning together – what an experience! Have a look at our website and book the Sundays that suits you better.

Fruit Planting by Pippa Greenwood

The garden may be quieter than usual at this time of year, and certainly not likely to be yielding vast quantities of crops, but this near dormant time is perfect for planting fruit.

You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, training them to espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal arms), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle), fans (with their branches trained in to a fan shape) or as step-overs, (trained so that they make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm or so above ground level). You could also use a fruit tree to create a decorative and later a wonderfully productive arch. At this time of year fruit trees are great value because they are sold ‘bare root’, lifted from a field and not container grown. I find these establish particularly well and because you usually obtain them from a specialist supplier or nursery, the range of varieties available is second to none. You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ and train these yourself, or if you want to save time, you can often buy trained or part trained forms. When you are choosing fruit trees it’s essential to get them on the right rootstock as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are particularly complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 but beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in a poor soil as it may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26 and for a cordon or espalier on a poor soil, for arches and for bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You will need to choose the varieties you grow so that they can pollinate each other (if there is no suitable pollinator in the vicinity you will not get fruit) and on the basis of the taste and texture of the fruit and how well it stores and so forth. If you have space, it is good to grow apples for cooking as well as eating, or look out for those described as ‘dual purpose’, meaning they make very passable cookers as well as dessert apples. As well as tree fruits such as apples, pears and maybe even a medlar or a plum or gorgeous gage, you could also consider some delicious bush fruits. The great thing about these is that they take up even less space and again can often be trained into wacky shapes such as fan-trained or standard bushes, making them all the more ornamental and easier to fit into the

48

smaller garden. Then there are raspberries - on my rather heavy and very alkaline soil I tend to stick to the autumn fruiting varieties such as Autumn Bliss and Joan J, but on freer draining and acidic soils you can try some of the more numerous summer fruiters too. Bare root fruit trees, bushes and canes are generally available from about November through until early March, depending on the weather, so don’t delay, start ordering or better still, planting, today. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related Christmas gifts and stocking-fillers, including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift cards, handmade pottery herb planters, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of seriously useful garden items for your friends and family, or yourself.

Kids

New Baby in New Malden Christmas with a new baby is a blank slate, a chance to create your own traditions and choose which of the existing ones you will adopt for your new family. My parents used to take me to the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols service in St John’s in Old Malden every Christmas Eve. While the choir’s singing was beautiful I always used to feel that the Nine Lessons really dragged and I would find myself calculating what fraction of the way through the service we were (“we’ve been here AGES and baby Jesus hasn’t even been BORN yet!”) We have gone instead for the child-friendly Christingle service at the Methodist Church for the last couple of Christmas Eves. The children get a Christingle orange with some sweets to decorate it, the Christmas story is retold with lots of audience participation and while I don’t want to give any definite predictions, we have been graced with the presence of Amy the Sheep on our previous visits. We’ll also be going to the Christmas party at New Malden Children’s Centre which was a huge success last year – my daughter thought the entertainer was hilarious and enjoyed the party food. A visit to Hampton Court over the festive season has also become a tradition for us. Hopefully this year we’ll take part in the courtyard carol singing which takes place in the run-up to Christmas (this is very popular and you need to book in advance.) We have already booked our tickets for our Christmas show, The Snow Gorilla at the Rose Theatre which looks as if it’s going to be a real treat, with acrobats, jugglers, flamenco dancers and contortionists promised. As my four year old becomes more interested in the present-giving aspect of Christmas, I think a visit to see Santa at Tudor Williams or the Bentall Centre may be in order. Maybe then she can ask him the questions she’s been asking me recently. “Why does Father Christmas come down the chimney, Mum?” Easy, I thought. The quickest route, plus he avoids the risk of being seen if he were to use the front door. Then the follow-up question. “What if he gets a dust allergy?” That one floored me a bit. I mean, you can’t expect an old man with a dust allergy to repeatedly plunge himself down chimneys, can you? “He would take some Piriton,” I mumbled uncertainly. So, to all parents who are dealing with these awkward questions, and to all of those babies and children for whom it is all new and thrilling – Merry Christmas!

Getting Ready for Parkrun If you haven’t heard of ‘Parkrun’ before now, you’ll certainly hear it mentioned in conversions or via the media in the foreseeable future; you only have to look on the back pages of all the local papers to find it mentioned. Parkrun is a phenomenon that is currently sweeping the running world getting people out of their beds for a run every Saturday morning at 9:00am. If you don’t believe me, just take a stroll down to Nonsuch Park and see the 300 plus athletes and funrunners taking part in this area’s local event. You’ll be surprised at the shapes and sizes of the people taking part, but they are all doing it because they enjoy it. In fact you can witness the same if you go to Hamlands in Kingston, Bushy Park, Wimbledon Common, Banstead Woods and Richmond Park all of whom host Parkruns in the immediate vicinity. Parkrun was an idea conceived in 2004 as a time trial over 5 kilometres in Bushy Park. However, it became so popular and overcrowded that another was opened

on Wimbledon Common and also had the same effect, Parkrun mushroomed. To date, Parkrun is run at over 300 locations in the UK and has spread to other parts of the globe with the format being repeated in such places as Australia, South Africa, Poland, Denmark, United States, New Zealand, Eire and Afghanistan! They are all run early on a Saturday morning, all run over 5K (3.1 miles) with the results arriving in your e-mail by early afternoon. And it’s free! It’s open to anyone and is a great family occasion where people can run with other members and children of the family. Even dogs on leads and child buggies are tolerated. You don’t have to be anyone special to do it. So how do you get fit enough to do it justice? There are many web sites telling you exactly how to start running and get yourself fit, but very few tell you how to get motivated. Last January, your esteemed editor, Jenny, decided that enough was enough and that she was going to respond to an article that she had commissioned for Village Voice and do an eight week running course taking her from being a relative statue to an active runner capable of running 3 miles without stopping. As her course instructor on behalf of Sheen Shufflers, I can vouch for her success! The next ‘Adult Beginner’s Running Course’ commences on Wednesday 8th January 2014 at 10am from the car park of Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park TW10 5HX and runs each Wednesday at the same time over a period of eight weeks. If requested, there will be a halfterm break. There is a charge of £40 for the eight week course to cover expenditure. However, if you just need motivating because your get up and go, got up and went, but you still feel that you have your basic running ability, come and join our Friday Morning Running Group – just turn up at Pembroke Lodge car park in Richmond Park at 09:50 any Friday morning. It’s non-competitive, friendly and open to all who can manage to chat and run at the same time! Runs vary between 3.5 and 4 miles and are in the park or alongside the River Thames. For more information on either the Running Course or the Friday running group, I can be reached on 07936 240937 or at bob.reed@tiscali.co.uk

Seasonal recipe Ginger christmas puddings

These fruity mini puds flavoured with stem ginger are much lighter than a traditional rich Christmas pudding and don’t need to be made weeks in advance.

Makes 6 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes 175g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 175g light muscovado sugar 1 tsp each ground mixed spice and ground ginger 3 large eggs 100g dried mixed fruit 50g glace cherries, chopped 50g stem ginger, finely chopped 4 tbsp stem ginger syrup Softly whipped cream or brandy butter, to serve 1 Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas Mark 5. line the bases with circles of baking parchment. 2 Place the butter, flour, baking powder, sugar, spices and eggs in a large mixing bowl and beat together with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes until pale and creamy. Fold in the dried mixed fruit and two-thirds of the cherries and stem ginger. 3 Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared pudding basins then cover each basin with a circle of greased and pleated baking parchment and secure with string. Cover each basin with pleated foil. 4 Stand the basins in a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until risen, firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into a pudding comes out clean. 5 Leave the puddings to stand for 10 minutes then turn out onto serving plates. Mix the remaining cherries and ginger with the stem ginger syrup and spoon over the puddings. Serve with cream or brandy butter. Tip For a boozy flavour, gently heat the stem ginger syrup with 1-2 tbsp of rum or brandy then pour over the hot puds just before serving.

Charity Golf Day

This year the Malden Golf Club Charity Day raised over £18,000 all in support of local charities. This was the Club’s 19th since 1995 we have raised around a quarter of a million pounds. The motto this year was ‘To give something Back’! We have introduced a cradle to grave approach supporting our local charities including: • Born too Soon- the neo-natal unit at Kingston Hospital • Bedelsford School in Kingston for severely handicapped children • Action for Children Warren Park a respite centre where parents can gain much needed relief • The 60 year old Spartans Swimming Club for the disabled • Kingston Bereavement Society In October we welcome representatives of the charities to the Club to hand over cheques and learn something of what they do. These are some of the things we heard: • Tiny babies that can be held in one hand; staff doing everything to try and help that little mite survive • How an expansion at Bedelsford will create accommodation for over 16 year olds • How we can help dedicated people have a few hours of much needed relaxation and respite • A trip for children, from the swimming club, who normally don’t get such treats • Help for members of our community who have lost loved ones. All moving stories inspiring us to do more! We owe so much to our many supporters; many members of the golf club and their guests who play in the event, those who sponsor holes – including our generous neighbours at the New Victoria Hospital whose CEO Charles Hutton, a great supporter of our day, died recently; those who provide us with gifts for auction, including our local MPs Zac Goldsmith and Ed Davey who contributed meals at the House of Commons, The Malden Centre and the popular local restaurant the Royal Gurkha Zac Goldsmith was unable to make the event due

to a prior engagement. Ed Davey and his P.A. came along for the presentation. Ed spoke with the all of the representatives some of whom he clearly knew personally! It was great that he made the effort to come; he had to dash as shortly after the meeting he was on the television in Newsnight! The auction raised over £9,000 this year, a record, due not least to £2000 being raised by enthusiastic bidding for tickets to see the final European PGA event of the year in Dubai. Our Brilliant Club Manager, Neil came up trumps yet again Of course, we rely on members of the charity committee and helpers, especially our secretary Ann Beard to make each year such a success but one lady who yet again played a vital part is Sheila Allan who has run the actual charity day for each of the 19 occasions; this year, in spite of taking a really bad fall and breaking both her hip and shoulder. On the day she was totally exhausted having been at the club from 7am until 10pm; she deserves a medal!

Charities RSPCA

The Hillingdon, Slough, Windsor, Kingston & District Branch of the RSPCA is a separately registered, self funded charity that depends on local support to fund its vital animal welfare work. The branch covers the large, densely populated areas of Slough, Uxbridge, Windsor and Kingston. The branch runs the Hillingdon Clinic which provides low cost veterinary services for pet owners struggling to fund the growing cost of private veterinary fees. This service is offered across entire branch area, seeing that thousands of animals get the treatments they need every year and providing an important local service to the community. With a policy to never turn away an animal in need; in 2012 the branch treated 10,764 at the Hillingdon Clinic and found new loving homes for 492 animals of all shapes and sizes. As the harsh wintery weather strikes the branch rehoming centre, all of the animals in RSPCA care have the same wish; to spend this winter in a cosy, warm bed with a loving family. Mitzie, an affectionate but unlucky bulldog, has a special request for Santa this year…

“Dear Santa, I’ve tried to be such a good girl this year, I really have, but things just kept going wrong. My owner said he couldn’t put up with my snuffling and snorting anymore so I would have to leave. But I’m a bulldog with a squishy nose, I can’t help being made the way I am. I was handed over to a lady who said I could be a friend to her elderly dog but I was just too energetic for him, so I couldn’t stay there either. But I’m only 4, I love everyone and can’t help wanting to make friends and play. So I was taken to the RSPCA where they made such a lovely fuss of me but they could see I was poorly. I had a problem with one eye and after lots of tests they also found that I was ill from eating rat poison. But I can’t help enjoying food, I didn’t know people left out bad things that I shouldn’t eat. It took so many weeks of treatment and special care for me to get better. I love all my new 2 and 4 legged friends at the RSPCA but I’m really hoping that you can see that I’ve tried to be good and grant my Christmas wish of finding my forever home sometime soon… one where they understand that I can’t help being me and love me for the way I am. Many wags from Mitzie”

Animals like Mitzie can't help themselves when life lets them down, but with your support, WE CAN! Donations (marked "Christmas Appeal" please) can be made: - online at www.rspcahillingdonclinic.org.uk, - by phone using credit or debit card on 01895 231435 - by PayPal to rspcaadmin@btconnect.com - by post to the address below making cheques payable to RSPCA Hillingdon - in person at any of our Branch Charity Shops.

Every donation, however small, will help us to grant wishes for a happier future to those animals coming into our care this winter.

The Better Life The Jolly and the Lively by Derek Thompson

In our village the festive season starts early - though not as early as in some shops. At the beginning of December two trees are set up and festooned with lights. Our Festive Fayre (I’m still not sure why it’s spelt that way) is timed to allow for the vagaries of Royal Mail, and is an event both communal and competitive.

Alliances and feuds are renewed like wedding vows, with a mixture of enthusiasm and ceremony. Table spaces are as hotly contested as parking spaces, and as arbitrarily assigned by the committee. Stalls include a lot of handicrafts and self-sufficiency - woodturning, preserves, knitwear, cakes, beading and, of course, a profusion of plants and produce, which are silently - and sometimes not so silently - critiqued by villagers and visitors taking a turn.

Still, by the time the mulled wine and mince pies start to circulate, there’s a rosy glow of one kind or another and peace is restored - at least until the village quiz that evening. Meantime, the raffle is a perfect example of recycling. Some residents on receiving their prizes must immediately plot to gift-wrap them for the following year. This explains the skin lotion we won that was five years past its best before date. Cometh the hour, cometh the quiz. Few villagers let me forget my first quiz, where, having only recently swapped my townie sensibilities for a straw hat, I’d never heard of potato chitting. Or that I insisted bananas are herbs (look it up if you don’t believe me), so technically it’s a fruit and herb salad. Many of the quiz questions are horticultural, so tough luck if you’re not up to speed in the garden. Teams can be mixed but are generally based on: family ties, neighbourly proximity, previous success, or arriving late and fitting in where you can. It all begins jovially although once the rhubarb wine and other homemade concoctions kick in it can become a little heated and heckly. The difference between pictures of begonias and pelargoniums has never mattered more. By the time people roll out of the village hall, singing songs of joy as they go, the Christmas trees are at their twinkliest. Just as well because we only have two street lamps in the village. Closer to Christmas Day there is also a candlelit procession to the chapel, with a host of glowing jam jars lighting the way. One year someone dressed up as a snowman, but it unnerved the children - and one elderly resident.

Anne and I have avoided the carol service ever since ‘pulpit-gate’, when we ended up gazing down upon the congregation due to a shortage of seating. Anecdotally, I heard that one or two villagers thought we lowered the tone - visually and audibly. In my book, winter is a time for thanksgiving, planning next year’s garden and reflection. We check the anti-frost fleece around the penstamon, passionflower and mesembryanthemum (try saying all that after a festive glass of port), and also take vulnerable plants and the dahlia bulbs indoors if things become chilly. One lesson we learned the hard way was not to have brussel sprouts and jerusalem artichokes together at the Christmas table. Let’s just leave it at that. Merry Christmas!
