Greetings!

Not long to go before our Christmas decorations go up - probably around the time you get this! When the children were younger I’d put off getting the tree up as it minimised the amount of time available for it to be knocked over.... but as the decoration collection grew, I joined the line of thinking that if you’re going to go to the trouble of putting it all up, you may as well enjoy it for as ling as possible. And enjoy it we do. They’re not for everyone, but i do LOVE fairy lights (white and warm glow) and now have rather a lot of them. The ones in the kitchen and garden have been up since fireworks party 2012 - we’re now used to them but ducking motion is required if you’re taller than me (not difficult!). The ones winding up the stairs actually went up in November 2011. Brian (the husband) was sent off to Dallas for ‘a couple of weeks’ and the girls and I were home alone - something we’d not done for more than a week at a time until then. I recall saying to a very wise friend how much I hated the ritual of turning the last light off at bedtime, to which she replied ‘why not leave it on then!’ Wise words indeed. And so the rather long string of LED lights went up. The ‘couple of weeks’ turned into five, with Brian just making it home by the skin of his teeth from Dallas on 23rd December. And very pleased to see him we all were too. And when he went back for January and February the lights stayed up and just never came down! And at this time, let’s try to remember that not everyone is fortunate to have family around them or people living with them. So let’s all see how we can help a neighbour, or member of our community who may not feel so festive and warm at this time of year. Wishing you all very happy Christmas!

It’s OUR Worcester Park! Bill Grimsey, Mary Portas and many others have commented on the death of the British High Street. Many more have commented on the decline of community. What we want to know is what you think. The people behind the Worcester Park Traders Association (WPTA) have teamed up with some world class retail and marketing professionals to launch Our Worcester Park. Their vision is to see the Our Worcester Park brand become the glue that binds our community together. The start is with our very own high street. The WPTA is to rebrand as the Our Worcester Park Traders Club, a collective of the best local retailers coming together to share knowledge, share vision and ultimately share in the great possibilities ahead. The most important part of building our Our Worcester Park initiative is to understand what residents and businesses alike want to see and experience on Worcester Park High Street and beyond. We have a few questions:

Do you shop on Worcester Park High Street? If yes, how often and what for? If not, why not? Where do you go? If not, when was the last time you visited the High Street? How do you find out about your retailers of choice? Where is your favourite place to shop? And why? Who is your favourite retail brand? What would you change about Worcester Park High Street? Do you eat and drink on Worcester Park High Street? Where? Why? Or Why not? We also welcome any other comments you have about your High Street and local community. Simply email scott@ourworcesterpark.com with your answers and comments. Community is about and involves all of us, so get in touch and we will all share in a bright and exciting future for Worcester Park. Oh and we also look forward to welcoming you on Friday, 6th December for the Worcester Park High Street Christmas Extravaganza, Ho, Ho Hope to see you there. Scott, Our Worcester Park Team

History

Pioneers in Boscombe Road This month we visit the area around Clarkes Avenue and Boscombe Road. As in many parts of Worcester Park, development got under way here in the 1920s-30s, but it followed a much more varied pattern, with houses built by many different people, some of whom constructed them in their spare time as their own homes. Among the earliest, pioneering residents of this area were James Barnard Sanders and his family, who went on to develop the whole plot of land on the corner of Dorchester Road and Boscombe Road. Mr Sanders’s son Brian recalls “My father built the house which became known as The White House [later 5 Boscombe Road, and now replaced by nos. 5-7] and we moved in in 1926. There was no water or electricity in the house, and my mother looked after three children using Primus stoves and oil lamps. My father some time later dug a trench the length of Clarkes Avenue from the house right down to the London Road in order to put a pipeline in for the water – and one chap half-way down Clarkes Avenue tapped into the water pipe clandestinely.” Like a number of houses in the area at the time, no. 5 was a colonial-style bungalow, with a veranda at the back covered by a sloping glass roof, and another at the front which “I think was built of the same material as the bungalow, asbestos cement sheeting. He did virtually all the work himself; it was built on top of old railway lines.” Later on, possibly for an extension, another railway line or girder “was being towed up from the London Road where it was left, by a farmer who had a two-wheeled cart; it was tied to the centre of the cart, and it bent the axle, which was a great catastrophe.” The bungalow had a large garage and an attached office, “and that was used as an air-raid warden’s centre in the early part of the war; people came up there to have their gas masks fitted.” J B Sanders “had quite an eye for property and had a vision that it would become a commuting area, which it did, but I think later than he envisaged.” In the 1930s he began to take advantage of the development of the area, firstly by building, and letting, nos. 1-3 Boscombe Road. Behind these, facing Dorchester Road, he built two lock-up garages, which were converted into small shops. “One was operated as a garage by Eddie Micklewright; and the other one was opened as a tobacconist/confectioner by my father for my uncle, Joe Brophy.” After Mr Brophy moved away, the Sanders

family ran the shop. Brian Sanders recalls that, on many occasions, “I used to open it at 7 before going to school, and my mother [Brigid Sanders] ran it a lot, and we had local people who acted as assistants”; James Sanders continued with his other career as a refrigeration engineer. Dave Sweetland recalls visiting the sweetshop as a child in the years around 1950; “The sweets were mainly in glass jars, and they used to sell liquorice sticks as well, and there was sherbet powder: you could either have a dip with your finger or you could take it home and make up a glass of lemonade sherbet.” The Sanders family then opened a grocery shop in a wedge-shaped extension to 1 Boscombe Road, right on the corner of Dorchester Road. All the goods were sold over the counter; Brian Sanders recalls that “Butter and cheese were cut up for the customer and wrapped, and there was a great business during the war of cutting up incredibly small 2 oz chunks for people’s rations. I recall eggs arriving in boxes about 2½ feet long and 18 inches square.” During this time the family continued to run the tobacconist’s in one of the lock-ups; subsequent tenants of the other lock-up included a ladies’ hairdresser, a greengrocer and a watchmaker, Mr Lenham. Eventually the family transferred their two shops to purpose-built premises at 125-127 Dorchester Road. Brian Sanders recalls “The shop moved in as Dorchester Stores, with groceries, confectionery and tobacco, and off-licence; we were still running it until my mother died [in 1977], mainly with the assistance of my brother Tony.”

Dorchester Stores was later run for 27 years, until his death in 2010, by Jayant Nanavati. He had been born in Nairobi, and moved to Britain in 1969 when Kenya began to place restrictions on non-indigenous Kenyans; he was a founder member of the Bhatia Association in the UK, for Kenyan Indians who had moved to Britain. His daughter Shilpa Nanavati, in an obituary for The Guardian, recalls his commitment to customers: “Years before the supermarkets considered home delivery, my brother and I were often sent out with shopping for elderly local residents (no delivery charge!).” More recently, these shops have been converted to houses, and the convenience store is back in one of the lock-up shops. Our photographs this month show The White House standing amidst fields in 1927, and the lock-up shops in Dorchester Road. This is an edited extract from my book Worcester Park, Old Malden and North Cheam: History at our Feet, published last year – an ideal Christmas present for anyone who lives in KT4, and wants to find out about how the district has developed over the centuries, or for friends and relations who have moved away, or anyone moving into the area. Ruth Jemmett Writes

Time for round robins and tender turkeys Ruth Jemmett Gets In The Christmas Spirit

Every Autumn I promise myself that “This year Christmas won’t take me by surprise. I will have my cards written and gifts wrapped well before the end of November”. But somehow I never do the deed. The weeks whizz by, and like most other people, I feel a sense of rising panic as the windows on the Advent Calendar get fewer and fewer. Why do we put ourselves under such pressure, when, with a little forward planning, we could be serene as swans? I suspect it’s because the child in us secretly rather enjoys getting caught up in the heady atmosphere of the maelstrom of mince pies and tinsel that threatens to engulf us in December. I admit to being Catalogue Woman. My many years as a full-time carer made me fairly dependent on those glossy magazines, as the luxury of going out shopping was often an impossibility. I found it a real boon when it came to buying gifts for people on their birthdays or at Christmas. I still receive many of them, but their appeal is wearing thin, as the goods so glamorously displayed within their pages, are often, in reality, of poor quality. Clothing, in particular, can be a major disappointment. Since the time I ordered a Size 12 shrug, and received a huge shapeless monstrosity that would have swamped a small elephant I have begun to prefer going into an actual shop - particularly when it has come to giving gifts to others. We always seem to forget how long that Christmas list really is. One year my husband watched me feverishly juggling cards and wrapping paper, when he said “If it was up to me, I wouldn’t bother with all of this” - and I think he spoke for a lot of men! I know he thoroughly enjoys The Big Day, but during the weeks leading up to it he really doesn’t care if a particular friend would prefer to be given secateurs rather than a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. He usually smiles benignly when friends thank him for the gifts we have given them, and it is only a slight twitch of the his face that betrays the fact that he usually hasn’t got the foggiest idea what item they are talking about! We women make rods for our own backs don’t we? In our hearts we know that we could ease our

load by buying a giant pack of Christmas cards with round robins on them, together with a stack of M & S Vouchers - and whoosh! - it would all be sorted out in one fell swoop, but that would be too easy wouldn’t it? Firstly we wouldn’t have anything to complain about (come on girls - you know we have martyrdom down to a fine art), and secondly, isn’t it just GREAT seeing all those smiling well-fed faces at Yuletide, and thinking “I’m exhausted, but happy!”? The media tap into our martyrdom complex and feed our maternal instinct even more by making us feel guilty if we don’t make our own Christmas cakes, knit our own Christmas Puddings or crochet our own Christmas crackers. We moan about our December workload, but I think we get a secret pleasure from matching cards and gifts to people. I am very sentimental about keeping cards that other people send to me, and enjoy reading the personal notes they have taken the trouble to write within them well after Christmas has gone. The trouble is that the cards, which, in reality, are never looked at again, eventually clog up the garage, together with all those half-empty gungy paint tins

and odd bits of wiring or plastic that “might come in useful one day”. I really love receiving Christmas cards, but what I DON’T like getting at this time of the year are Round Robins. (And I don’t mean the fluffy kind ….). You know the sort of thing: “You will be pleased to know that Jeremy gained a First at Oxford, despite having to complete his finals whilst hooked up to a life-support machine” - or, equally: “We hope to have Prunella with us at Christmas, if she has recovered from her haemmorhoid operation in time. We have bought her a goose-feather cushion to sit on. Lots of love from Jane and David.” I scratch my head furiously, wondering “Who on EARTH are these people?”, and then I remember that I met them in a tearoom on the coast thirty years ago. I probably wouldn’t recognise them if I saw them in the street, and certainly don’t wish to know about poor Prunella’s painful predicament. As Christmas approaches we often glance over our shoulders and take stock of what has happened in the previous few months. If we are lucky, nothing too embarrassing or incriminating will have befallen us. 2013 has changed the face of Salisbury Road, and not only with regard to various people moving in and out. Several of us have had our drives repaved (by golly -

that chap was SUCH a good salesman!), and the whole area looks better for it. In our own particular property we decided to have our roof renovated. We recently discovered that all of our ridge tiles were attached by nothing more than thin air. Luckily the repair work was completed just before The Big Storm of 28th October struck. Thankfully the furious gales left local properties in a relatively unscathed condition, in comparison to The Hurricane of 1987, which demolished countless fences in Salisbury Road, giving us one very long garden! Regular readers will be pleased to know (I’m sounding horribly like a Round Robin letter …!) that my longawaited greenhouse is now burgeoning with cuttings. Everything that is green in the area is now in danger of being propagated! They say that you never regret your extravagances, and I have to say that I am delighted with my new toy, even if the money spent on it should have been put towards something much more necessary - such as the re-decoration of my drawing room, which has a look of faded splendour about it! Never mind - it will get done eventually ….. I recently celebrated my 67th birthday in that room, surrounded by the special people in my life. Over the years we have shared all sorts of ups and downs together, and the comfortable lived-in furniture bears witness to having been well-used by countless good friends and neighbours. As we chatted, laughed and shared memories, I don’t think any of them cared that the rug they stood on was hiding a piece of thinning carpet, or that the wallpaper has seen better days. What really mattered was that we were together. I hope that when you get together with the special people in YOUR lives this coming Christmas, that they are enjoying themselves far too much to notice the stain on your ceiling or the peeling paint round the doors. May your turkey be tender, your stuffing superb, and if that the irritating relative you HAD to invite, is in your vicinity, may they be on their best behaviour. Hopefully you will be submerged in an avalanche of thoughtfully penned Christmas cards from those you care about, and will receive gifts that you really like. With a bit of luck you WON’T get any Round Robins. If you do, you can always retaliate. There will surely be someone out there who will be interested to know about the fact that your giant bunions have been featured in The Guinness Book of Records, and that your parrot can sing Silent Night. A Very Happy Christmas To You All. Ruth Jemmett is a Member of The Society of Authors

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart In 2012, 484,224 new businesses were registered in the UK, up from 440,600 in the previous year and almost a world away from an average of around 150,000 to 180,000 back in the 70’s and 80’s. Something has changed and it appears to be quite a fundamental alteration in the UK economy. The smaller to medium sized enterprises (SMEs, defined as having less than 250 employees) are actually the life blood of the UK economy, with more employment and investment than the traditional leviathans that we normally hear about. People, despite the fears from the banks and the nerves of the media, seem to be far more willing than ever before to risk everything, put the house on the line and have a go at running their own business. This is in spite of the failings of the banking system and our structural failing in the UK to financially support start ups effectively (back to my rants on peer to peer lending again). I find this not just remarkable but very encouraging. As I have mentioned before, we now have a record number of active companies in the UK (3.1 million), and this is despite the financial environment and a tax regime only marginally conducive to supporting the entrepreneur. I grant that this has improved a little, but as we have a new breed of politicians who have never had a job, and civil servants who have never risked their assets, I suppose that this is hardly surprising. Going back to the late 90’s we used to have an excellent lunch time television show on BBC2 called Working Lunch, and one of their great highlights was the focus on small and developing businesses. This was done neither in the pseudo drama of Dragon’s Den, nor with the facile game show that is The Apprentice, but rather with real stories of business striving and thriving in and amongst all the economic issues that the businesses had to face.

18

Another statistic I found was that start ups and small businesses make up 95% of all companies and employ more than 7 million people, out of a working population of just a tad under 30 million. Now let’s be realistic. Around half of these companies will sadly die within three years, but at a rising run rate like this, surely this has to be one of the most supportive pieces of economic and business news we have seen lately. So did this astonishing number reach the headlines? No - barely a mention although page 4 of the Financial Times (at the bottom of the page) had a modest comment. As Brits we are of course somewhat reluctant to shout about our successes, but on the other hand it’s about time we gave ourselves a dose of confidence that something tangible is being achieved. Oh and please don’t let me hear any politician claiming any thanks for this. They haven’t put up their house, they haven’t stayed awake at night wondering if the business is going to be there in the morning, and I

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

wonder if they have ever had that fear of putting your cash card in to the bank machine to find that you are down to your last sous. Even now I hope that one day we will have a Chancellor that really understands the triggers that can help smaller businesses to get them going, not in give-aways, but sensible incentives for investment and returns, and encouraging capital and investment allowances. The UK has a poor reputation for business investment and anything that can help this has to be a benefit. So well done entrepreneurs; despite the odds many of you have done it and no doubt will continue to do so. The experience was so rewarding and the feedback so great that we decided to open our own “kitchen” in Fitzroy House. Both the beginner and intermediate courses in Autumn were fully booked and our students loved the experience: “This is such a good way to learn. The class very quickly felt like spending a social evening with friends” (David); “I felt so comfortable and more confident in speaking in front of others” (Jenny) New courses in 2014! When promoting our courses at the Worcester Park fairs and in Waitrose, we had the chance to talk to a lot of you who showed interest in lunch time courses and also, Cooking Your Spanish for the Family. We are pleased to announce that from January we will also organise lunch time courses from 12pm to 1.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (see the flyer). Furthermore, our courses for the family (parents and kids from 8 to 11 years old) will be at lunch time on Sundays. At every session, two new tapas will drive you and your best classmate through the language of Cervantes and Rafa Nadal. Learning together – what an experience! line the bases with circles of baking parchment. 2 Place the butter, flour, baking powder, sugar, spices and eggs in a large mixing bowl and beat together with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes until pale and creamy. Fold in the dried mixed fruit and two-thirds of the cherries and stem ginger. 3 Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared pudding basins then cover each basin with a circle of greased and pleated baking parchment and secure with string. Cover each basin with pleated foil. 4 Stand the basins in a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until risen, firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into a pudding comes out clean. 5 Leave the puddings to stand for 10 minutes then turn out onto serving plates. Mix the remaining cherries and ginger with the stem ginger syrup and spoon over the puddings. Serve with cream or brandy butter. Tip For a boozy flavour, gently heat the stem ginger syrup with 1-2 tbsp of rum or brandy then pour over the hot puds just before serving.

Sneaky ways to save Jasmine Birtles, moneymagpie.com

Be the one to book group holidays – you could be given a discount or even a whole holiday for free for yourself. If you go out for a meal with your friends regularly, book it. If you use a site like Toptable.com you’ll receive better deals at fantastic restaurants anyway, and you earn points every time you book. Plus if you have a car, join up to car-sharing websites like Liftshare or National Carshare or just arrange to give friends lifts. Once again, any money they give you for petrol should go straight into your savings pot. Keep an eye on coins Spare change can be annoying especially if coins are rattling around in the bottom of your bag or worse, the washing machine - but they do all add up. Pull all the cushions from the sofa; check in pots in the back of cupboards, on shelves and under the bed and who knows how much you could discover.

Let’s face it, saving money is hard, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. Here are a few ways to save money without even realising it. Pay yourself first Set up a standing order from your current account to a savings account on the day after your wages are paid. That way it’s like you never had the money in the first place, so now it’s tucked away earning interest in your savings account and you won’t miss it. Get cash back If you use a cashback credit card or do your shopping through cashback websites, make sure that you put it straight in your savings account. The best cashback credit card at the moment is the American Express Platinum Cashback card (bear in mind, you need a decent credit rating to be given this card). When it comes to the best cashback sites, try ECashback for instant rewards of up to 35%. Spend one pay rise behind If you are fortunate enough to receive a pay rise, you might be tempted to increase your spending. Don’t. Instead, try and stick to the smaller budget you’re used to, and put the extra pay into your savings account. In fact, change your monthly standing order. Set up a bad habits box It could be a swear box or a chocolate, fast food or crisps box. Whatever your secret, or not so secret, naughtiness is, fine yourself something when you indulge. Come up with an amount that suits you – 10p or £1 – and stick it in the bad habits box. Putting the money in the box each time you succumb will help you kick the habit so you can save money and help yourself lose weight at the same time. Start your own in-house Laundromat Put a jar next to your washing machine (and dryer if you have one) and ‘charge’ yourself every time you use it. Again, it’s up to you how much you charge but after a few months you should have a decent amount to pour into your savings account. Travel smart If you drive or take public transport to work, that costs money. Find a cheaper - or free - alternative and then you can put the savings away. If you have to take the train try to get cash back on your journeys. TrainDelays (www.traindelays.co.uk ) is a website that does all the leg work for you and completes the claims process so all you have to do is register with your journey ! details for free. Be the agent for your friends

The Better Life The Jolly and the Lively by Derek Thompson

In our village the festive season starts early - though not as early as in some shops. At the beginning of December two trees are set up and festooned with lights. Our Festive Fayre (I’m still not sure why it’s spelt that way) is timed to allow for the vagaries of Royal Mail, and is an event both communal and competitive.

lowered the tone - visually and audibly. In my book, winter is a time for thanksgiving, planning next year’s garden and reflection. We check the antifrost fleece around the penstamon, passionflower and mesembryanthemum (try saying all that after a festive glass of port), and also take vulnerable plants and the dahlia bulbs indoors if things become chilly. One lesson we learned the hard way was not to have brussel sprouts and jerusalem artichokes together at the Christmas table. Let’s just leave it at that. Merry Christmas! Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www. alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com

Alliances and feuds are renewed like wedding vows, with a mixture of enthusiasm and ceremony. Table spaces are as hotly contested as parking spaces, and as arbitrarily assigned by the committee. Stalls include a lot of handicrafts and self-sufficiency - woodturning, preserves, knitwear, cakes, beading and, of course, a profusion of plants and produce, which are silently - and sometimes not so silently - critiqued by villagers and visitors taking a turn. Still, by the time the mulled wine and mince pies start to circulate, there’s a rosy glow of one kind or another and peace is restored - at least until the village quiz that evening. Meantime, the raffle is a perfect example of recycling. Some residents on receiving their prizes must immediately plot to gift-wrap them for the following year. This explains the skin lotion we won that was five years past its best before date. Cometh the hour, cometh the quiz. Few villagers let me forget my first quiz, where, having only recently swapped my townie sensibilities for a straw hat, I’d never heard of need to find a way to relax? potato chitting. Or that I insisted bananas are herbs (look looking for a way to start exercising? it up if you don’t believe me), so technically it’s a fruit and why not try yoga? herb salad. Many of the quiz questions are horticultural, so tough luck if you’re not up to speed in the garden. Teams can be mixed but are generally based on: family ties, thursday 8pm to 9:30pm neighbourly proximity, previous success, or arriving late and fitting in where you can. It all begins jovially although once £10 drop in the rhubarb wine and other homemade concoctions kick in it can become a little heated and heckly. The difference £45 for 5 classes*, £80 for 10 classes* between pictures of begonias and pelargoniums has never *conditions apply mattered more. By the time people roll out of the village hall, singing elmcroft community centre songs of joy as they go, the Christmas trees are at their twinkliest. Just as well because we only have two street london road, north cheam lamps in the village. Closer to Christmas Day there is also a surrey, SM3 9AB candlelit procession to the chapel, with a host of glowing (next to Sainsbury’s) jam jars lighting the way. One year someone dressed up as a snowman, but it unnerved the children - and one elderly resident. 07531 788163 Anne and I have avoided the carol service ever darancrush.yoga@virginmedia.com since ‘pulpit-gate’, when we ended up gazing down upon the congregation due to a shortage of seating. facebook.com/darancrushyoga.om Anecdotally, I heard that one or two villagers thought we To advertise email jenny@wplife.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

Fruit Planting by Pippa Greenwood

The garden may be quieter than usual at this time of year, and certainly not likely to be yielding vast quantities of crops, but this near dormant time is perfect for planting fruit.

You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, training them to espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal arms), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle), fans (with their branches trained in to a fan shape) or as step-overs, (trained so that they make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm or so above ground level). You could also use a fruit tree to create a decorative and later a wonderfully productive arch. At this time of year fruit trees are great value because they are sold ‘bare root’, lifted from a field and not container grown. I find these establish particularly well and because you usually obtain them from a specialist supplier or nursery, the range of varieties available is second to none. You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ and train these yourself, or if you want to save time, you can often buy trained or part trained forms.

When you are choosing fruit trees it’s essential to get them on the right rootstock as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are particularly complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 but beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in a poor soil as it may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26 and for a cordon or espalier on a poor soil, for arches and for bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You will need to choose the varieties you grow so that they can pollinate each other (if there is no suitable pollinator in the vicinity you will not get fruit) and on the basis of the taste and texture of the fruit and how well it stores and so forth. If you have space, it is good to grow apples for cooking as well as eating, or look out for those described as ‘dual purpose’, meaning they make very passable cookers as well as dessert apples. As well as tree fruits such as apples, pears and maybe even a medlar or a plum or gorgeous gage, you could also consider some delicious bush fruits. The great thing about these is that they take up even less space and again can often be trained into wacky shapes such as fan-trained or standard bushes, making them all the more ornamental and easier to fit into the smaller garden. Then there are raspberries - on my rather heavy and very alkaline soil I tend to stick to the autumn fruiting varieties such as Autumn Bliss and Joan J, but on freer draining and acidic soils you can try some of the more numerous summer fruiters too. Bare root fruit trees, bushes and canes are generally available from about November through until early March, depending on the weather, so don’t delay, start ordering or better still, planting, today. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related Christmas gifts and stocking-fillers, including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift cards, handmade pottery herb planters, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of seriously useful garden items for your friends and family, or yourself.

Local Surrey Kia dealership Shelly Motors hosted a highly successful Ladies Evening at its showroom recently. Over 75 guests attended the event in support of Cancer Research UK. Andrew Shelly, Dealer Principal of Shelly Motors Kia, said they were delighted by the response from the ladies who attended the evening: “The aim of the event was to enable ladies to ask any question they have always been afraid to ask without fear of being talked down to. The experienced team at Shelly Motors is always happy to offer advice on vehicle safety, tyres and roadworthiness”. As a well-established Kia dealership with sales and service, Shelly Motors Kia understands many female clients feel unsure when it comes to regular car maintenance and what to do in the event of an unexpected puncture or breakdown. To lower the barriers to females who don’t normally enjoy walking into car dealerships, the recent Ladies Evening at Longmead Industrial Estate, Felstead Road, Epsom offered friendly advice from various experts including personal safety, understanding your car better, to the latest in-car technology. Every client was able to enjoy personalised demonstrations and interactions. Mr Shelly added: “I would like to thank all of my team who all worked incredibly hard in preparing for the event and making everyone feel so welcome. Special thanks to Sainsburys Epsom, Steven Rowe and team, Linda, Lisa and Louise”. Some of the feedback included: “Just loved the motto for the evening, cars aren’t just for men! Warren’s demo was a hoot” “Really glad we came, came away with great tips to keep me mobile!” “It was really informative. The team did a fantastic job!” Over £300 has been raised so far with all proceeds going to Cancer Research. More photos at www.shellymotors.com

Voice for Wildlife by Carol Williams Many different animals seem to be associated with Christmas - snowy scenes with robins, foxes, deer, owls etc, cute scenes of mice posting cards, cats and dogs wearing Santa hats, roasted birds on festive tables, Nativity tableaux with animals around the manger and so forth. Therefore, this month, I thought I’d write a bit about 3 of them. Turkeys It is thought that the name for the domesticated version of the wild turkey is a mistake, a confusion with some Southern Mexican subspecies imported into Europe on ships that passed through Turkey. Be that as it may, it was first domesticated around 2000 years ago by the indigenous tribes of Mesoamerica. The preferred habitat for turkeys, which are native to North America and Canada, is forest. They like a mix of hardwood and coniferous, with scattered open spaces. They are omnivorous and forage on the ground or in small trees and climbing shrubs where they will eat a variety of grasses, acorns, nuts, seeds and berries, insects, amphibians and small reptiles such as lizards and snakes. They will also visit garden feeders, as wild birds do here. Imagine seeing a turkey perched in the lower branches of your apple tree! Male turkeys , which are called toms in the US and stags in the UK (?!), are polygamous, mating with as many hens as they can. They display to females by spreading out their tails and dragging their wings, a behaviour often called ‘strutting’. Their heads and necks are brilliantly coloured in blue, red and white, with white being the sign of the greatest excitement. They use gobbling, drumming/ booming and spitting to signal social dominance and to attract females. Having seen the living conditions for most domesticated turkeys bred for the table, I realise that none of the natural behaviours I have briefly outlined here are possible for any of them. Probably few of us have ever seen a live turkey. There are reckoned to be about 7 million in the wild today. Donkeys Mary riding on a donkey, Joseph beside her, slowly travelling to Bethlehem. there at his birth and also just before his death, according to the bible accounts. The ancestors of the modern domesticated donkey are the Nubian and Somalian sub species of African Wild Ass. There are now only 2 species of wild ass left in the world, and both are critically endangered, whereas there are over 40 million domesticated donkeys. The European ass became extinct during the Stone Age and the North African wild ass died out in Roman times. Donkeys have been used as working animals for over 5000 years. They were first brought to the Americas in 1495 on the ships of Christopher Columbus. Donkeys have tough and efficient digestive systems and so thrive on poor quality scrub. In temperate climates, which are not their native habitat, forage can be too abundant and donkeys may grow fat from overeating and suffer metabolic disorders. Others who are the livelihood animals of the very poor suffer from insufficient food and overwork. In the Dynasty IV era of Egypt, between 2675 and 2565 BC, wealthy members of society were known to own over 1000 donkeys for meat and dairy, and as pack animals. Today, China has the most donkeys, with around 11 million, closely followed by Pakistan, Ethiopia and Mexico.. The behaviour most commonly associated with donkeys is stubbornness, but this is to misunderstand them. They are more alert to danger than horses are and so a lot more cautious; this makes them seem less biddable, when, in fact, they are merely instincitively careful about going forward into possible threats to their survival. The male is called a jack and the female a jenny or jennet. Pigs. I read the book ‘Angela’s Ashes’ a while ago, and in there, the xmas feast for a very poor family was a boiled pig’s head. I imagine they considered themselves very lucky to have even that. The ancestor of all domestic pigs is the Wild Boar which actually became extinct in Britain in the Middle Ages, through hunting. But after an absence of about 700

years, they are back, in 2 thriving populations in English woodlands. They have re-established after escapes from wild boar farms which began to grow in popularity here in the 1980s and there are now 300 or more of them living wild again. Normally they are wary of humans and active during early mornings and after dusk. Adult males are solitary but females and youngsters live in groups of about 20 individuals, called sounders. Boar are omnivorous scavengers with strong rooting instincts, so, like moles, not very welcome in pastures and on bowling green lawns... Hoglets develop this behaviour at about 2 weeks old, eating worms and grubs they find in the soil and leaf litter of the forest floor. Because of their attractive stripey coats, which are for camouflage in dappled shade, wild boar piglets are sometimes called ‘humbugs’. You might think of this when you unwrap that tin of mint humbugs from your stocking this year... But to end this wild ramble, I wish you season’s greetings as you head off on your donkey to the Boar’s Head for your turkey dinner! This year I am looking forward to preparing a huge vegan banquet, my very first, and the only turkey I have ‘bought’ is a live one, on the Adoption list from a farm animal sanctuary. Peace on earth and goodwill to everyone everywhere and may Santa bring you all you desire.

Nonsuch News

BBC2 has a season on Tudor history; the V & A has an exhibition of Tudor Art and Buckingham Palace is showing portraits exploring Tudor fashion. The local resident, however, does not need to travel to London to appreciate some of Tudor history. An amazing model of the original Nonsuch Palace, built by Henry VIII to celebrate the birth of his son Edward – so important to the Tudor dynasty – is on view every every Sunday in the winter 11 – 2 p.m in the Gallery of the Mansion, Service Wing entrance, Nonsuch Park. The site is marked on the Northern side of the Park by three tall pillars which now stand as the only physical evidence of this amazing building. They are as three sentries guarding a bygone age. In addition, a unique and important collection of stained glass amassed by Samuel Farmer, owner of the present Mansion in the early 1800’s, features one particular panel commemorating the marriage of Jane Seymour to Henry VIII – only 11 days after the execution of Anne Boleyn! These are just a few of the treasures on view in the Nonsuch Mansion Service Wing Museum open on 2nd & 4th Sundays in the month (9th and 23rd) 2 – 5 p.m. Combined entry to Gallery & Museum £3.00, Concessions £2.00. Safer Neighbourhoods The ‘Bank Courier Scam’ by PCSO Gary Weaving

Detectives in Sutton are asking residents to help protect their elderly and vulnerable neighbours against the ‘bank courier scam’ following 29 reports to police over the last three weeks. The scam involves residents receiving a telephone call from someone pretending to be from their bank, the police or the Serious Fraud Office. The caller will say there is problem with their bank card. They will ask the resident for their bank details and PIN - and will arrange to collect the card by courier, such as a local cab or taxi firm. The tricksters’ purpose is to steal cash and savings. Such calls are a scam because these organisations would never ask for bank details. Banks would have this information already and would never ask for old cards to be returned. One of the most recent cases reported to police was a 74-year-old woman, who was tricked out of £2,940 after she received a phone call at her Sutton home on Friday, 8 November at 5.20pm. She was told her bank account had been used fraudulently to purchase two computers. She put the phone down and immediately called her local Safer Neighbourhoods Team - not realising that she hadn’t allowed time for the telephone line to clear - and unwittingly found herself talking to the original caller who had deliberately stayed on the line. She then spoke to someone who was pretending to a police officer who stated her card had been used fraudulently. The resident was asked to confirm her PIN using the telephone keypad - again not realising that the sounds made for each digit can be decoded to obtain the number. She was instructed to wrap her card and the £140 cash she had at home in a toilet roll, put it in a plastic bag, and wrap sticky tape around the back to disguise its contents. A courier then arrived to collect the package. The following morning - Saturday, 9 November - she received a call from a man pretending to be a police officer. She was asked to withdraw £4,000 because her bank was being investigated for counterfeit currency - and they needed to check the notes. She agreed to withdraw £2,500. She was asked not to speak to her bank about this as it might be involved in the counterfeit racket. The resident withdrew £2,500, which she wrapped up as the previous parcel, which was collected by courier.

She found out later that her card had been used to withdraw £300. Detective Inspector Sarah Rees, who leads Sutton CID team, said all the reports were being investigated. “The perpetrators are cruel and heartless individuals who set out to trick and confuse people who are elderly and vulnerable. We want residents to talk to their elderly neighbours and make them aware of this scam so they don’t get tricked out of their money.” Crime prevention advice from police includes: - Don’t reveal your bank details including PIN to anyone - banks will already have these details and will never ask for your old card back - Don’t give your bank cards to strangers whatever reason they may give you to part with them - If a caller asks for your card and PIN, hang up - When you hang up, use a different line to report it to police on 101 or allow at least five minutes for the line to automatically clear - If a courier is already coming around to your home call police on 999 immediately. In Sutton, officers have had crime prevention roadshows in High Street locations, given talks to local groups, visited residents in sheltered accommodation and undertaken door-to-door visits to raise crime prevention advice. These initiatives will continue. Police are also working with Sutton Council’s carer’s network, the Meals on Wheels Service, Age UK, Sutton Council for Voluntary Services and Neighbourhood Watch to raise awareness of the scam. Many thousands of residents have fallen victim to this scam across London and around the country. In London, the average loss has been £4,000 each time. Take care everyone and look after each other this Christmas and all through 2014. Thank you.
