Malden Fortnight - Saturday 30th June – Saturday 14th July 2012 Malden Fortnight Chair Peter Findlater looks back on 2011 and forward to this year’s festival No apologies for bringing to everyone’s notice, relatively early on, the not so small matter of The Malden Fortnight. Although the Festival takes place during the first two weeks of July, much planning is needed to ensure we have an entertaining and interesting number of events and to enable schools and all participants to have enough time to organise participation in these events, especially the Parade of Floats on Saturday 30th June. The Festival is starting a week earlier this year due to a little event starting in London at the end of July called ‘The Olympics’! Last years events were particularly successful with a sold out High Street Craft Fair, a much increased participation in the Parade, a fully attended Dog Show, sold out Music concerts, children’s Day of Dance, not to mention the marvellous inclusion of the Korean Festivals of Food and Dance. We want to build on last year’s success and include extra events across the fortnight which will tie in with this years theme which is…not surprisingly ‘The Olympics’. This will also be the parade theme which should be a broad enough palette for some interesting and amusing entrants. As usual, we are inviting all Junior and Infant Schools to enter our ‘Design a Poster’ Competition on the ‘The Olympics’ theme, the winner of which will see their design used as the promotional poster for the Fortnight. The winner and two runner ups all receive a cash prize along with the schools themselves. The events are organised by the Malden Fortnight Festival Committee, composed of local voluntary members. It has been run for the last 28 years and is now an integral part of local event planning. It is important to stress that the aim of the Fortnight is to celebrate our local community. We are always on the lookout for new members, from any walk of life, who will be able to bring new ideas to the table or even be able to help in a practical manner. This is especially important as 2 of our key members are stepping down

after many years of selfless devotion to the Festival, namely Jenny Hunt (Parade & Day of Dance) and David Wallis (Craft Fair). The majority of our events are either self-funded, i.e. raising income from sales of tickets, or from sponsorship. Whilst we are particularly proud of the increase in local business sponsors this year, we are always interested in new sponsors, especially local businesses, to help improve both the number and quality of the events. We also organise, along with New Malden Rotary, the Christmas Parade/Lights on the last Friday in November. This year’s event was the most successful ever, with almost 400 children meeting Father Christmas in St. George’s Square. Those of you have participated in our events in the past and wish to do so again can contact us through our website, www.maldenfortnight.co.uk, or directly to my email address, peter@tudorwilliamsltd.co.uk.

Making a positive response to the ‘Downer Month’ Does the prospect of January fill you with angst? Stephen Kuhrt may just have the answer for you. For some people the month of January is a real downer. Christmas with all its excitement is over, the New Year has been celebrated and the winter is still here with its cold weather and early evenings. Those who of us with birthdays in January may well resent this ill feeling towards the time of year when we entered the world! But for many others, January is a month that they associate with drabness and having little to look forward to. January is also, however, a time for new starts with the tradition still maintained of people using it to make resolutions about those things they will try to do differently in the coming year. One possibility for January 2012 is seeking to connect these two very different sides of January through confronting the question of ‘what is life really about?’. How are we to understand this life, with the bewildering mixture of the wonderful and difficult things it contains? And how we to respond to this life and get the most from it? One possible way of approaching this question is through the Alpha Course. Alpha is a course lasting roughly two months which has been designed for people who want to explore what Christianity is all about. It starts with a meal where people can get to know each other and is then followed by a brief talk on basic aspects of the Christian faith. More important than any other part of Alpha, however, is the discussion that then follows in small groups. Here the onus is upon people raising the questions and issues that matter to them with the emphasis upon their opportunity to explore how these relate to the Christian faith. When people are doing this together and are able to listen to each other’s thoughts and insights, Alpha has proved an extremely helpful means of helping people to find greater meaning and purpose for their lives. Part of this is through encountering other people who have much the same questions and struggles. By the end of the course quite a bond has often formed between those coming. B oth Christ Church and the Baptist Church have run the Alpha Course for several years. These churches are always keen to welcome as many people on their

8

courses as want to come. The next Alpha Course in New Malden is beginning on 23rd January at Christ Church on Coombe Road and the church want to extend to you a very warm invitation to come along. The course will run on Monday evenings from 7.45 – 9.45 pm (with a break for Half Term) until 19th March. Please ring me on 0208 942 2523 if you would like to come or talk further about the course. And it is completely free! January doesn’t have to be a ‘downer month’! Many people can testify to the huge difference that the Alpha Course has made to their lives. So what about using this January to make a positive response to that crucial question of ‘what is life all about?’ Stephen Kuhrt is Vicar of Christ Church, New Malden

Freedom for a fighter Did you know that Winston Churchill was an Honorary Freeman of Malden & Coombe borough? But the appointment wasn’t without contraversy. Our historian Robin Gill tells all.... One of the highest honours a city, town, or borough can award is the freedom of the district. In Malden and Coombe case this did not entitle the recipient to drive his or her sheep down the High Street; it did mean they received an illuminated scroll detailing the award. Many years previous, the beneficiary had been exempt from tolls, and some other charges, and it was only Freemen who could vote in elections to parliament. With the passing of the Honorary Freedom Of Boroughs Act in 1885 these privileges were removed, and it became a purely honorific award to those “persons of distinction, and any persons who have rendered eminent service to the borough”. The Local Government Act of 1933 enabled the boroughs to continue to appoint freemen ,and it was this Act that allowed the newly formed Borough Of Malden & Coombe in 1937 (a year after its incorporation) to elect

Robert Carr Dodds and his wife Constance Lena as the first Honorary Freemen of the Borough. He had previously been a chairman of the former Local District Council. Most of the early appointments of Freemen Of The Borough were ex members of the Council such as, Cicely Elizabeth Hobkirk who founded the Malden and Coombe Welfare Association, and whom Hobkirk House in Blagdon Road is named after, Dora May Porter who was responsible for organising the early Poppy Day collections for the British Legion, and Frederick Stanley Wagner Mayor from 1937-1943 who opened the Library in Kingston Road where he borrowed the first book, and opened the Post Office in the High Street where he bought the first stamp. The only exception to this was James William Johnson, who was the clerk to the Local Board/Council for over 20 years. Surprise nomination So, it may have come as quite a surprise to most of the Council, when on 25th October 1950 Alderman John Sharp put forward the motion that the “Right Honourable Winston Churchill OM CH MP” be made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough. Alderman Sharp, a former Mayor, went on to say that he had already approached Mr Churchill to ensure he would accept the honour. Councillor Collins seconded the motion. All Freemen could only be selected by a majority vote at a full meeting of the Council. This motion caused a great storm as the rest of the council had not been consulted. Councillor Edward Jones thought it was scandalous, as the first he had known about it was when he read the agenda for the meeting. He thought that as they were discussing such a great man that councillors should be able to give their views in private. Councillor Deacon thought they had been put in a humiliating position because of the behaviour of Alderman Sharp. Even Alderman Wagner already an Honorary Freeman felt there was “Some sense lacking in Malden”. Councillor Fred McGhee a strong socialist felt if Churchill was to be honoured, then so should General Dwight

Eisenhower who had spent much of America’s war at Telegraph Cottage in Coombe. Then there was Viscount Montgomery who had been in command of the defence of the Surrey area in 1941, and Lord Tedder who lived at Corner Croft in Stoke Road Kingston (near Holy Cross School). And why should the honour be restricted to commanders, what about the ordinary soldier, sailor, or airman? McGhee felt that a member from the “other ranks” should be chosen by local members of the British Legion. The Town Clerk (Harold Barrett) felt that a further discussion should be held in an informal meeting at a later date, and this proposal was agreed by the Mayor Alderman John Green. Churchill the sportsman What about the great man himself? Churchill, as far as I am aware had not visited Malden. While Home Secretary; he was a member of Coombe Hill Golf Club for about 6 months in 1911. He also played polo at Motspur Park (at the Worcester Park Polo Club) in the 1920s. He played the game from 1895 until 1927. Other than this, he had no other personal connection with the borough. Churchill had already received many freedoms from boroughs, towns, and cities, from Aldershot to Worcester, so Malden and Coombe’s offer was not unusual. “Doing things the right way” All the controversy proved too much for Alderman Sharp, and he resigned in January 1951 after 17 years on the council. He denied his resignation had anything to do with his nomination of Churchill, and said he could no longer give the time his council work required. He felt that the problem was due to a series of misunderstandings. So, on 28th February 1951, at a special meeting of the council, it was down to the Mayor to put forward the motion that the” Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Malden and Coombe be conferred upon the Right Honourable Winston Spencer Churchill OM CH MP”. “He is distinguished by the outstanding eminent services which he rendered during the Second World War to this country, to the Empire, and to the whole world on the noble cause of Freedom”. The motion was seconded by Alderman Wagner, and passed unanimously. Alderman Green hoped that Churchill would be able to visit Malden for a formal ceremony. The Mayor went on to say that the council had been offered a framed engraved portrait of Mr Churchill by the local MP Alderman Cyril Black (Malden was part of the Wimbledon constituency at the time). The engraving was of a portrait by Alfred Egerton Cooper, who had painted Churchill many times, and unusually most of his work was appreciated by the sitter. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Churchill with details of the resolution that had been passed. A reply was received from 28 Hyde Park Gate (Churchill’s London home) dated 4th March, thanking the Council and saying “I am indeed honoured by this distinction, and am greatly complimented by your gesture”. Churchill was not able to suggest a date when he would be able to come to the Borough as he had many commitments, but hoped to attend at a later date. In the end the roll was signed by Mr

14

Churchill on 18th July after a special journey to the House of Commons undertaken by the new Mayor (WJ Alexander) and the Town Clerk. Churchill became Prime Minister in October 1951, and was knighted in April 1953. He suffered a stroke in Downing Street the following month although this was kept secret. He stayed in office until his resignation in April 1955. He then suffered another stroke in December of the following year. All of these events meant that Sir Winston had been unable to visit Malden for the official ceremony. A meeting arranged So, it was with great delight that the Council were informed (in December 1957) by the Town Clerk that he expected shortly to receive a letter from Sir Winston’s personal secretary, announcing that Churchill would be able to accept the Freedom in the first half of the next month. Whilst, he was unable to visit Malden, it was possible, for a limited number of people to visit him at Chartwell for the ceremony. The Council would have to decide who should be included in the party, and decided that it should include the present Mayor Alderman Harry Arbon-Collins, the Deputy Mayor RA Taylor, Alderman WJ Alexander, and the local MP Rt Hon John Boyd-Carpenter (Malden was back in the Kingston constituency) together with other members of the Council in order of seniority Aldermen FA Gear, AR Hill, CH Johnson, EEW Manning and JE West. These men together with the Town Clerk visited Chartwell on Saturday 11th January 1958 and stayed for about an hour. The oak casket containing the scroll was presented by

Alderman Arbon-Collins who told Sir Winston, that Malden during the war had been one of the first boroughs to be bombed in daylight, and was proud to have two VC winners together with two George Medal holders and three BEMs. After the ceremony cigars and champagne were handed out by Sir Winston who talked to each of his guests in turn. Malden may well have been the first borough to have been invited to Chartwell for such an occasion. An occasion the Mayor said, he would never forget. The end When Churchill died on 24th January 1965, Malden lost it’s most distinguished and loved freeman. The mace at the next Council meeting was draped in a black cloth and, after prayers, the council stood in silent tribute. The Mayor Cllr John Cole wrote to Lady Churchill with deepest sympathy on behalf of the Borough. There was an invitation to members of the council from the vicar of Christ Church (Llewellyn E Roberts) to attend a Memorial Service that Sunday, where the lesson was from Joshua Chapter 1 Verses 1-9, the same reading that Churchill read the night before

he became Prime Minister in May 1940. While he was lying in state in Westminster Hall many children from Malden were taken up to London to file past the coffin. All the flags were flown at half mast and all shops in Malden were shut on the day of the funeral on 30th January at St Pauls, which the Mayor attended. Bentalls observed a two minutes silence at 11am, and showed the televised programme of the funeral in their television department. Someone who attended the funeral, commented that, on driving through the streets of London on the way to St Pauls there were vast crowds lining the roads waiting for the funeral procession, but remarkably they were standing in complete silence, each with their own thoughts about the man who had died. In St Pauls after the service had finished, and the coffin had left the Cathedral, the British “stiff upper lip” wavered for a minute, and there was not a dry eye in the congregation. Mushroom & leek risotto - Serves 4 This creamy risotto is great for a quick and easy midweek supper simply served with a leafy green salad and some warm ciabatta bread. Replace the mushrooms with 55g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 2 leeks, washed, trimmed and thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 225g risotto rice 900ml hot vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 175g button mushrooms, wiped 2-3 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Heat half the butter and the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the sliced leeks and garlic and fry over a medium-high heat until softened but not brown. Stir in the rice and cook for one minute. Add a ladleful of the hot stock to the pan and simmer gently, stirring all the time. When all the liquid has been absorbed by the rice, add another ladleful of stock. Continue adding the stock in this way until the rice is tender and has a creamy texture – this will take about 20 minutes. Heat the rest of the butter in a separate frying pan and fry the mushrooms over a high heat for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Stir the Parmesan cheese into the risotto and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the risotto in warmed bowls topped with the fried mushrooms, chopped parsley and extra Parmesan cheese.

View from the city This month Justin Urquhart Stewart gives us his take on what’s ahead for 2012

This week – Next Year……. I have to say that I am sick to death of all the doommongers and depressants that seem to be continuously preaching to us at the moment. From the tales of our economic woes through to the geo-political arguments that rage around the world, all of this will no doubt be highlighted as “breaking news” by our 24 hour gloomseeking media. Now I am not in a state of denial that we have some very serious and major issues to address, any of which, if managed badly (a not impossible thought with our current array of inexperienced politicians) could

become significantly worse, but I do believe that we have to put things into greater perspective. Thus at the turn of the year, now I think is a good time to paint such a more realistic and pragmatic picture. Firstly let me assure you that my attitude is not one brought on by just a feeling of euphoric goodwill caused by the festive season and, as yet, I have not imbibed significantly of any festive liquors (although please spare me from any of that ghastly mulled wine – which, by the way, is just an excuse for the French to dispose of some dreadful grape extraction that failed to qualify even as vinegar with a cinnamon stick stuck in it – give me Austrian anti freeze any day). So what of the UK? What we have to remember is that we have been through a ten year boom which of course, as ever with such cycles, is now balanced out with ten years of lean. The good news is that we are already three years into the lean period, but we still have some way to go and some major issues to overcome. In fact we have a great deal to look forward to but the bad news is that we are bound to have some unpleasant suprises as well. From the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations through the UEFA cup, to the Olympics and Paralympics, all armchair athletes are going to be thoroughly exhausted by the time we get to September. There will no doubt be arguments over costs and benefits from these events, to which my current view is “balderdash” – just get on and enjoy them. All this, though, will at least provide us all with an excellent line of distractions from what is probably going to be a fairly tiresome year in terms of economic statistics - which will no doubt be spun by some to try to drive us into a state of depression and despair. So let’s try and negate some of this straight away. Yes, unemployment has been rising and this has to be addressed, but this still means that 92% of the working population is working. This is by any measure a large proportion. They are working, paying tax and spending money – most will continue to do so. Next year we will establish probably in excess of 400,000 new companies - which is a very respectable run rate – and, if properly directed and encouraged, those coming out of the public sector could be in a good position to become entrepreneurs themselves – so long as the government puts together the right joined up new start package. Although we may not be booming I am not coming across many companies that are failing at the moment. What they tend to say is that it’s not easy but, like the majority of smaller businesses, they have adjusted to changes – because they have had to – that’s what you do! In fact I am quite regularly seeing some great success stories and some even bringing manufacturing back to the UK. Oh yes, and just remember when next time someone says we don’t manufacture anything

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

anymore – we are either the 7th or 8th largest manufacturer in the world, and it accounts for over two million of our workforce as opposed to the one million in financial services. Just as an aside to this, one example of our successful high end engineering global strength for the UK has been Formula One and all its related development and industrial linkages. Most of the F1 Teams seem to have some link to the area around Oxfordshire and probably involve some 250,000 employees in one form or another. Financial services are still a strong provider for us and despite everything being labelled as “the City” it is in fact spread throughout the UK. Although the media seem to implicate all financial services with the banking crisis, it is still a very successful and valuable sector, and one in which we are known as a global leader. To this we can add pharmaceutical development, our universities, all the creative industries from music to advertising and actually you find that we have a great list of valuable and developing industries that we should be proud of. So are we doomed? Absolutely not. Damaged maybe, but damage can be repaired. There are many “ifs” for next year, but if the Eurozone find a means of managing their currency more credibly, and if the Americans can find a way through their political deadlock, that one crucial word can start to

be introduced again - if only in pianissimo - confidence. Albeit from a very low level, any base level of confidence will be reflected in many of the equity markets that have been suppressed in value, not from corpporate weakness of results and profits, but from a fundamental lack of credible political leadership and policies. If we were to see some inspirational leadership, then the breath of the Oriental Dragon might just make this year a lot more encouraging than many currently assume. If, however, our political bosses are bland and ineffectual, then prepare for the more deadly Occidental Dragon - complete with breath of fire and no doubt some appalling halitosis. Personally I am with the Chinese Dragon. Happy new year!

Obituary Tony Foster Needham of the Graham Spicer Institute remembers long term New Malden resident John A. A. Mowat It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of John A. A. Mowat at the age of 87. John will be remembered by many of the older residents of New Malden for the enthusiasm, commitment, and direction that he provided to the Graham Spicer Institute during the last 7 decades. John was born at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in 1924, and as a token of their gratitude to the Hospital, John’s parents gave him the additional name of Anderson. His parents soon moved to Howard Road, New Malden where John lived for the duration of his life. John served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, and spent most of the war years in India servicing aircraft. He was demobbed in 1946, and moved back to New Malden eventually finding employment in an administrative capacity with Mowlems, who had offices in the central London. It was not too long before John joined the Graham Spicer Institute to participate in the sport that the Organisation provided, and he soon became involved in the Football, Cricket, Badminton, and table Tennis sections. Although short in stature, John was a very skilful and dedicated footballer, and when he retired from being an active player he continued for many years to use his considerable organisational skills to manage the team. John was also a proficient table tennis player, and although never reaching the top echelons of the sport he impressed all he played against with the natural competence and commitment he displayed. As he grew older his and playing skills slightly diminished, he decided to get involved with both the Surrey County TT Association and the Thames Valley TT League and he served with distinction for many years until his recent bout of ill health. He was a Vice President of the Thames Valley TTL. John was also very much involved with the Kingston Sports Council and was well known for organising both the girls and boys Kingston table tennis teams that participated annually in the London Youth games. Another of John’s innovations was the Kingston Junior Table Tennis Initiative that is still active today. Many young aspiring table tennis players have benefitted from the coaching sessions that are held at the Institute, with a high percentage going on to play at County level. John also organised the Cadets, Junior, and Senior British League teams and on many occasions became ‘chauffer’

30

in order that the teams arrived safely at venues. Through John’s involvement in the Institutes sporting activities John became very well liked and known to all its members, and it was no surprise when he was elected a Trustee in 1956, becoming part of the team

that was responsible for the well being of the Institute and its members. Then in 1975 he was elected President of the Trustees, a position he held until his death in July. When John accepted the office of President, the Institute was located in the old Holy Trinity Church, but in 1989 when Waitrose redeveloped the site, the Institute had to be relocated to its present position at No 15 Dukes Avenue. The Institute Trustees, with John at the helm, worked tirelessly to ensure that the new building and the facilities therein were delivered in the agreed timescale. Since the opening of the new building the Institute has grown and provides many facilities for local residents and John was very proud that he was a major contributor to that success. Those of us who knew John well, will unquestionably remember him as a person who was unselfish, modest, quietly efficient, undaunted and one who was closely attached to the success of both the Graham Spicer Institute and the sport that he loved most of all – Table Tennis. John Mowat will be sorely missed. The Institute would like to be able to erect a plaque in John’s memory. If you would like to contribute, please make your cheques payable to the Graham Spicer Institute and send them to : Graham Spicer Institute , 15 Dukes Avenue, New Malden, Surrey, KT3 4HL.

January Sales There’s a wonderful Charles Addams cartoon from the New Yorker of God knows how many years ago showing a sale at a big department store, where a huge poster advertises “Genuine reductions!!!” There’s a queue of normal-sized people waiting to go in...and a line of tiny little people Well, January sales can be pretty nightmarish, if not perhaps that nightmarish. But the crowds, the elbowing, the fighting over the priced-to-sell designer schmutter... not my cup of tea, but some people seem to thrive on it. It’s either the hunter-gatherer instinct resurfacing, or just a submerged taste for violence temporarily legitimised, but many shoppers love the scrum so much they even queue overnight with sleeping-bag and thermos of hot

soup. (Which begs a question: where do they err, go, in the night? A very real problem when you’re getting on a bit, and one reason why I don’t go camping anymore.) Wikipedia having for once failed me, I’ve been unable to track down the first-ever January sale in history. But there’s a linen draper in Philadelphia that has been holding one since 1878: maybe not the world’s first, but a date that fits nicely into the history of department stores where January sales surely originated. It’s all about Christmas. This wasn’t a big commercial event until the second half of the 19th century – in Dickens’s A Christmas Carol of 1843, it’s almost a normal working day. But by that time major cities were already beginning to sprout department stores: Kendals of Manchester in 1836, Bainbridge’s of Newcastle in 1838, Harrod’s of Knightsbridge in 1849, Lewis’s of Liverpool in 1856, Whiteley’s of Bayswater in 1863 and so on. Whiteley’s always claimed to be the first true department store, but Bainbridge’s had first used the term in 1849: you pays your money, you takes your choice. If anybody can be nailed as being responsible for the commercialisation of Christmas, it was these big department stores. And the January sale was an obvious

way of ridding themselves of the season’s surplus stock – not just Christmas consumables, but winter wear in general. Little by little the January sales became more than just a festive afterthought but major events in their own right, and an important injection of cash for the stores before the late-winter doldrums set in. By the dawn of the TV advertising era, some stores gave their sale more publicity than Christmas itself. And nothing seems to have slowed the juggernaut since: at the height of the Harrod’s January sale last year, the tills were taking £20,000 a minute! (Strictly, since 2002, Harrod’s January sale has been its “Winter sale”, since its opening moved to Boxing Day or the day after – so, no nice long Christmas break for Harrod’s staff.) And I am now told by a friend with retail experience that the January sales are no longer even primarily concerned with clearing surplus winter stock, but that fresh stock is ordered especially for the event. Now, I’m no businessman, but this seems dodgy to me. Don’t sale goods have to be displayed for 28 consecutive days at the “established price” before they can be displayed as sale goods? I suppose the stores’ legal eagles have found a way round the Consumer Protection Act 1987, but I bet that trading standards officers have pretty itchy trigger fingers come January. And anyway, if they can make a decent profit selling goods at half-price in January, why not do the same in the other 11 months? I think we should be told...

Tips for keeping the Festive Flower Stunning Do your Christmas plants dry out once the decorations have been packed away? Pippa Greenwood this month suggests how to get the most out of them. Christmas houseplants such as Cyclamen, Poinsettia, Christmas cactus, indoor azaleas and moth orchids have the potential to transform any room in your house, but neglect or give them the wrong care and you’ll end up with a pot of dying leaves before New Year. Here’s how to keep your festive flowers simply stunning: Cyclamen with their showy pink, white or red flowers and exotically patterned leaves make a great indoor plant, but they are very easy to kill. The secret of success is to keep the plants in as cool a room as possible. If you want them in a warm room, put them there at the last possible minute and return quickly. Always water from the base (by standing the pot in a saucer of tepid water for 20 minutes, then letting the excess drain away) and pull off deteriorating leaves promptly. Indoor azaleas also prefer a cooler room, and plenty of moisture is essential. Azaleas have an extensive fibrous root system and are often tightly packed into their pots so they dry out very easily and it’s worth soaking the pot in tepid water at least once a day. Watering with cooled black tea will help to supply the acidic conditions they prefer. Poinsettia with their screaming bright red (or occasionally pink or white) flower-like bracts are the classic Christmas houseplant and they’re not difficult to look after. Keep the compost just moist and choose a draught-free spot in a warmish room. Christmas cacti, usually with rich red, orangey, pink, cream or white flowers are easy to look after but they need totally different care to desert cacti. The Christmas cactus originates from forested areas, so prefers to be kept just moist and hates being baked in hot, dry

36

conditions. Try not to move them about too much once the buds have formed as they may well drop off. Orchids really are a law unto themselves and it’s essential that you follow the care instructions carefully. The most popular type is the moth orchid which will have arrived in a pot with little if any compost and soon the aerial roots will grow out of the top of it. There’s no need to re-pot when this happens initially, as this is how the plant is naturally. Water once a week, ideally with rain water or with cooled boiled water. Most of it will run straight out of the bottom of the pot but it’s meant to - whatever you do, don’t let your moth orchid sit in water. The Christmas Cherry is actually a type of Solanum, related to tomato and potato plants. Covered with its marble-like bright orange or sometimes yellow or reddish shiny fruits it can look stunning. It’s not fussy but doesn’t respond well to over-watering so only re-water as the compost becomes dry. Find a well-lit spot and it’s very tolerant of cooler temperatures. The Hippeastrum, also sometimes sold as the amaryllis, is a stunning houseplant bulb with the potential to produce one of the biggest, brightest indoor flowers you’ll ever have. Red, pink or white are the classic colours. The pot may need to be stood in a larger, heavier one as they are often sold in ones that soon overbalance once the flower spike is out. Keep the compost just moist and supply a warm, well lit spot for best results. Make 2012 the year you start Growing Your Own Vegetables. At www.pippagreenwood.com select the vegetables you’d like to grow and you’ll receive garden ready vege plants PLUS every week Pippa emails you hints, tips and advice.

What is it about New Malden? Local author Carl Sims tells us why he’s so fond of our village. Before coming to settle in New Malden, I went to investigate a potential new home. I fell in love with it and happily reported back to my wife (we were then living in Kent). She cleverly, and rather annoyingly, noticed a small error in my report, and one that had escaped me; I viewed the wrong house. Easily done when the estate agent was clearly as stupid as me. Regardless, the agent offered consolation. “Don’t worry, the house you should have viewed is next door – it’s different, but not too much”. On that sun baked day so many years ago, I realised, as I walked numerous quiet streets from a bustling railway station, New Malden had a unique calmness that was capturing me, a peaceful charm of an established place I wanted to be – more importantly, where I wanted my family to be. That’s what I loved (and still do) about New Malden – it’s quintessentially suburbia, although different, but not too much. It’s reminiscent of a time gone by. A time we possibly associate with steadfastness. Contentedly demonstrated through fine neat avenues, cosy thirties houses, proud gardens, thick hedges, wooden fences and trees popping up pavement slabs.Yes, there’s the busyness of high street shops, the clatter of trains and hum of cars but there’s a calmness echoed in the peace of friendly side streets – until school’s out! Of my four children, three were born in Kingston Hospital and all went to school here. Their lives are inextricably linked to New Malden, their friends and pastimes, all here. Walks in the many luscious parks - or short noisy drives with children chattering, to Wimbledon Common or Richmond Park. Their ephemeral lives, and indeed others have made New Malden, and New Malden has made theirs. Possibly it’s that; children growing and creating their unique but wholesome difference to this quiet unassuming place, to which many flock yet rarely leave? The vista from the back of my house languishes over gardens; dozens of them backing onto each other and side by side, holding lifetimes within secured fences

40

hedged with shrubs, mown lawns, established tress and continuously cared for flowers. On thick warm summer evenings you hear sounds you never realised were there, children playing, people laughing – a lingering cacophony till night-time finally beckons. As with all havens, New Malden demands little but offers much; an assuredness, a safety, a place where if we were children, we would want to call home. So, can it be simply said; people come to New Malden to live? Live a whole lifetime – be here for years and years. Enjoying a defined suburbia, safe in the knowledge that it’s here for living. So now in this wintery time of a new year, a lazy sun dips unapologetically into dusk and picks out shiny roof tops, it’s comforting to know New Malden is always there, always changing, but not too much. Carl is author of ‘Ahh! Sims’ available Kindle/Amazon. The New Malden postcard was created by David Hankin and is on sale at Suttles in New Malden High Street.

Dad’s Christmas Diary by Ian Duncan “Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.” Bill Vaughan, American Author Happy New Year How was it for you? How did you approach New Year’s Eve? Was it the biggest night of the year - did you party like it was Nineteen Ninety Nine? Or were you try desperately to stay awake until midnight - fumbling with radio to find Big Ben’s chimes and succeeding a few seconds too late - then to be kept awake by all those fireworks. (It wasn’t Bonfire Night for goodness sake.) Resolve As well as making, and instantly breaking, resolutions were there any traditions you kept? My mum always insists that someone “first foots” – adopting a Scottish custom that suggests that the first person to cross a home’s threshold after midnight on New Year’s Eve determines the homeowner’s luck for the following year. The ideal visitor, a dark haired man, should arrive bearing gifts - food, drink and fuel – and good luck. This hearkens back to the days when receiving a blond visitor was not a good idea as he was probably a fair-haired, axe-wielding Viking and his mates bent on wrecking the joint. (Which, come to think of it, sounds just like your average town centre on a modern day New Year’s Eve.)

year, and for each toll of the bell. The tradition can be traced back to the year 1909 when there was a bountiful harvest in the town of Alicante and Alfonso XIII, the Spanish King, gave grapes to his subjects on New Year’s Eve . Then it was our turn. Did you, like me, wish that you knew more than just the first line of Auld Lang Syne? Did you have a blast? Our celebration are quite tame compared to some: across the Atlantic, three hours behind us, the Puerto Ricans would have been blasting car horns and boat whistles, ringing church bells and beating drums to drive away evil spirits and demons. In some parts of the country they also throw buckets of water from their windows at midnight in a bid to chase away the evil eye. Meanwhile in Bolivia, a further hour behind, they hang dolls made of straw and wood hung outside their homes for good luck. It is also considered lucky to leave three stones outside your front door for health, prosperity and love. (Some Bolivians chose to wear yellow-coloured underwear to bring a new year full of money or red ones to bring love.)

Auld Lang Syne? Fourteen hours before us, the 2012’s New Year’s party started in Kiribati, a group of Pacific tiny atolls in the Pacific which straddle the International Date Line. As such, even the most hardened partygoers must surely have called it a night by the time Big Ben chimed twelve. Just eight hours before our party started, in the Philippines people would have been throwing money in the air for good luck as the clock struck midnight. Then there was bit of a lull with a lot of East Asia waiting for the lunar New Year celebrations in February. Most of the European continent got to celebrate an hour before us. In Spain, at midnight, folks eat twelve grapes: representing one wish for each month of the

And finally ... ... six thousand miles away, and seven hours further on, American Samoa was the last country to enter 2012. Here, according to Samoa News, the New Year is celebrated in a “low-key manner, through family get-togethers and church services” - this began when the Methodist faith entered the shores of the Samoan islands and the church set up a service of offering or thanksgiving at the end of the year through the service called “po o moli”, or night of lights where coconut lanterns surrounded by fragrant flowers are set out as an offering of thanks to God. Hello 2012 Whether you were allowed to stay or were forced to stay up and whether you celebrated like a Puerto Rican or a Samoan, I hope you have a very Happy New Year.
