Worcester Park History As we start a new year, David Rymill starts a new series about the history of the Cheam Common schools at the top of Central Road The original Cheam Common Infants’ School was opened in 1869 in the Church Room, a prefabricated iron building which was the predecessor of St Philip’s Church and stood in Cheam Common Road, between Dalmeny Road and Woodbine Lane. Parents contributed from 1d to 9d per week for each child, according to their means and the number of members of the family. Within a month there were 29 children on the roll; the schoolmistress was Miss Harriet Starr. The school’s first log book records a succession of visitors: Miss Smith – presumably Rosa Smith of The Avenue and later Washington Road, after whom the playground in Longfellow Road is named – came twice most weeks and took a class, usually for reading. In November 1870 she brought toys for the children to play with in the dinner hour, and in March 1872 she distributed buns and prizes. There were also regular visits by the clergy from St Philip’s and St Dunstan’s and their families (Cheam Common was still part of St Dunstan’s parish at the time). In 1874 Mary Jane Topley became the schoolmistress. In addition to the 3Rs, the curriculum included poetry, religious knowledge and needlework (including hemming, darning and patchwork). On Wednesdays Miss Topley introduced ‘kinder garten’, probably a teaching through object-lessons. Much of the children’s work was done on slates, but in May 1874 copy-books were introduced. From 1874 ‘monitresses’ taught the youngest children. In March 1878 a purpose-built school was opened at the top of Central Road, opposite the present schools (on the site now occupied by the curving row of shops), next to the church which had been opened in 1875. It was a brick, slate-roofed building, a little over 50ft by 20ft, divided by a wooden partition to provide accommodation for 51 infants – and also 77 older girls who would previously have travelled to the Girls’ School in the Parochial Rooms in Cheam Village. The building cost just over £1300: much of this was donated by local residents, including Mr and Mrs Antrobus, who also gave the site.

A schoolhouse and a third classroom were added in 1892, making room for 156 in total. The classrooms had desks, each long enough for three or six children. The small cloakroom had 74 pegs and a sink; the lavatories were across the playground. A surveyor’s report of 1904 commented on the smoky open stove in one classroom, and loose gravel in the playground, which found its way indoors on pupils’ feet. By this time more space was required: in February 1904 the Infants’ classes moved temporarily to the Longfellow Road Mission Hall, and in June became a separate Infants’ School. After two years in Longfellow Road, the infants moved in September 1906 to a corrugated iron building opposite the old school, on the corner of Balmoral Road. At first it must have seemed almost as crowded as the Mission, since only one room was ready and lessons were accompanied by a “great noise of hammering.” After about three years here, the girls would cross the road to the 1878 building while the boys had to continue their education in Cheam or Malden. u

The “Tin-Tack” (originally “Tin Tab”, short for Tabernacle) is remembered by many former pupils from the Infants’ department. Maurice Upperton, who started at the school in 1916, recalled “The boys and girls were all taught together – there were only three rooms for three years and a long cloakroom that ran the length of the three for hats and coats, and there was also a little gas-ring perched on a corner bracket, and the teachers made a cup of tea there – there was no staff room. “On Armistice Day [1918] the news came through that the War had ended, and Miss Young, the headmistress, said ‘You can all go home today’, and we were sent home at midday. We all went off down the hill whooping and shouting for joy.” Behind the school, where the present schools stand, “there was a big field and an oak tree. We played our own games – hopscotch, and the boys had tops which you had to spin, peg-tops we called them; the girls had tops, but theirs were funny little things, and they had to whip them, so they were called whip-tops.”

8

Next month we will look at some more memories of the old tin school, and the opening of the present Infants’ School buildings in the 1930s. One of our illustrations this month is the best view I have found of the 1878 school. The photographer must have been standing near the corner of Balmoral Road, so the school and Central Road are on the left, and the roof of St Philip’s can be glimpsed above the trees in the centre, with Cheam Common Road curving away towards the right. Can any WPL readers provide a better photograph of the 1878 school? Now to return to the topic of Barrow Hill which I mentioned in November: Roy Hellings has kindly provided our other illustration, showing the view down the hill to the grassy triangular island at the junction with Old Malden Lane. The gate-pillars across the lane probably mark the entrance to the stables of Auriol Auriol-Barker who lived at the top of the hill. David Rymill 020 8330 6563 david.rymill@hants.gov.uk

The road to hell New Years resolutions. Local writer Ruth Jemmett looks back on how successful she was last year! Do you remember January 2011? Do you recall the list of New Year Resolutions that you made at that time? Did that garage ever get sorted? Did you decorate that spare room? I thought not. There is something about writing that yearly list that makes us imagine that a chore noted down is a chore already half done. The chances are that you completed the first two items on the list before the seventh of January (namely, finishing off that yuletide bottle of whisky and scoffing that box of chocolates before they were out of date) and then conveniently assigned the aforesaid list to the paper recycling bin or the bottom of the budgie’s cage. They say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. If this is true, we are all doomed to the spend eternity waving pitchforks, alongside the bankers. How easy it is to enthusiastically write a list of what we will try and achieve before the end of the year. At that time the challenges before us seem to be easy-peasy. Make the garden weed-free? No problem! Clean the gutters? A doddle! Then comes the reality. The imagination that most of us use in order to create excuses to avoid actually doing some work, could put Steven Spielberg to shame. “No - I can’t climb that ladder. I swear I saw an evil gremlin crouching at the top of it”. “No - I can’t take that rubbish to the tip. My old war wound is troubling me. Well, yes - the war WAS one I was playing on the computer. Don’t get picky!” Failing such excuses, you can always resort to the tried and tested “It’s too hot/cold to do it”. If really desperate there is always “But you are so much better at doing that job than I am…”. The truth is that boring chores are precisely that. Boring. Listening to your favourite C.Ds whilst tutting and sighing as you defrost the freezer (whilst trying to decide whether that revolting thing in the plastic bag on the bottom shelf is worthy of an investigation by the science museum) can soften the blow a little, but the truth is that even the dulcet tones of Michael Buble cannot completely eradicate your feeling of utter despair. The famous New Year Resolutions list will inevitably contain the chilling words “Write thank you letters”. Let’s face it. There are only so many ways that you can enthuse about an ornament you hate (yes, you who sent me those luminous orange plastic candlestick holders all those years ago know who you are …) or sing the praises of a book

10

you already have nineteen copies of, but we try, and grit our teeth until they are stumps while we are doing it. We all MEAN to put thick red ticks all the way down our January lists, proud in the knowledge that we DID deflea the cat or unclog the drains, but would much rather prefer that a Mary Poppins character would leap into our lives and leave us to do more important things - such as browse through our back copies of The Beano or arrange our toenail clippings into artistic mosaics. The N.Y.R. lists tend to grow longer as we grow older, and we put off the chores that might tire us out. If you are very clever you can avoid ticking the resolution that says “Grow our own vegetables” for a whole decade, after which time you will have boosted Sainsbury’s profits immensely by gorging on THEIR produce, and will have become so unfit from avoiding the digging that a major item on your NEXT year’s list will be “Join Weight Watchers”. My list for 2011 said “Practise on new banjo”. Unfortunately, apart from having the odd twang on it, I never got round to picking the instrument up much. It has sat on its stand for the large part of the last year, glaring sulkily at me with its moon face. Next year … next year … Equally, the ukulele I so desperately wanted to improve on, has, for the most part, dangled despondently from a picture rail in my dining room, muttering to itself “The second George Formby she ain’t…”. We tend to view our New Year Resolution lists much as we do our food menus.

We cherry-pick the things that appeal to us most. An item such as “Buy dress for party” usually takes precedence over “Bleed the rusting radiator”. But take heart, dear Worcester Park reader, and remember that the world will go on turning even if you DON’T get round to polishing the brass or cleaning the windows. In an ideal world perhaps the most important item on everyone’s list should be the words “Show my friends and family how much I love them this year - and every year”. I wish you all a year full of health, happiness, good luck and much love. There will always be unticked lists in your life, and that last resolution could be the one that makes a wonderful difference to you and everyone you know. Everything else in your existence is merely window dressing. The world is full of walls to build or furniture to dust. Dust is always there, but you can’t guarantee that people will be. And don’t forget, if your jobs aren’t always completed you are in good company. After all, even Beethoven had an unfinished symphony….

View from the city This month Justin Urquhart Stewart gives us his take on what’s ahead for 2012

This week – Next Year……. I have to say that I am sick to death of all the doommongers and depressants that seem to be continuously preaching to us at the moment. From the tales of our economic woes through to the geo-political arguments that rage around the world, all of this will no doubt be highlighted as “breaking news” by our 24 hour gloomseeking media. Now I am not in a state of denial that we have some very serious and major issues to address, any of which, if managed badly (a not impossible thought with our current array of inexperienced politicians) could

12

become significantly worse, but I do believe that we have to put things into greater perspective. Thus at the turn of the year, now I think is a good time to paint such a more realistic and pragmatic picture. Firstly let me assure you that my attitude is not one brought on by just a feeling of euphoric goodwill caused by the festive season and, as yet, I have not imbibed significantly of any festive liquors (although please spare me from any of that ghastly mulled wine – which, by the way, is just an excuse for the French to dispose of some dreadful grape extraction that failed to qualify even as vinegar with a cinnamon stick stuck in it – give me Austrian anti freeze any day). So what of the UK? What we have to remember is that we have been through a ten year boom which of course, as ever with such cycles, is now balanced out with ten years of lean. The good news is that we are already three years into the lean period, but we still have some way to go and some major issues to overcome. In fact we have a great deal to look forward to but the bad news is that we are bound to have some unpleasant suprises as well. From the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations through the UEFA cup, to the Olympics and Paralympics, all armchair athletes are going to be thoroughly exhausted by the time we get to September. There will no doubt be arguments over costs and benefits from these events, to which my current view is “balderdash” – just get on and enjoy them. All this, though, will at least provide us all with an excellent line of distractions from what is probably going to be a fairly tiresome year in terms of economic statistics - which will no doubt be spun by some to try to drive us into a state of depression and despair. So let’s try and negate some of this straight away. Yes, unemployment has been rising and this has to be addressed, but this still means that 92% of the working population is working. This is by any measure a large proportion. They are working, paying tax and spending money – most will continue to do so. Next year we will establish probably in excess of 400,000 new companies - which is a very respectable run rate – and, if properly directed and encouraged, those coming out of the public sector could be in a good position to become entrepreneurs themselves – so long as the government puts together the right joined up new start package. Although we may not be booming I am not coming across many companies that are failing at the moment. What they tend to say is that it’s not easy but, like the majority of smaller businesses, they have adjusted to changes – because they have had to – that’s what you do! In fact I am quite regularly seeing some great success stories and some even bringing manufacturing back to the UK. Oh yes, and just remember when next time someone says we don’t manufacture anything

Please remember to mention Worcester Park Life when you speak to our advertisers

anymore – we are either the 7th or 8th largest manufacturer in the world, and it accounts for over two million of our workforce as opposed to the one million in financial services. Just as an aside to this, one example of our successful high end engineering global strength for the UK has been Formula One and all its related development and industrial linkages. Most of the F1 Teams seem to have some link to the area around Oxfordshire and probably involve some 250,000 employees in one form or another. Financial services are still a strong provider for us and despite everything being labelled as “the City” it is in fact spread throughout the UK. Although the media seem to implicate all financial services with the banking crisis, it is still a very successful and valuable sector, and one in which we are known as a global leader. To this we can add pharmaceutical development, our universities, all the creative industries from music to advertising and actually you find that we have a great list of valuable and developing industries that we should be proud of. So are we doomed? Absolutely not. Damaged maybe, but damage can be repaired. There are many “ifs” for next year, but if the Eurozone find a means of managing their currency more credibly, and if the Americans can find a way through their political deadlock, that one crucial word can start to

be introduced again - if only in pianissimo - confidence. Albeit from a very low level, any base level of confidence will be reflected in many of the equity markets that have been suppressed in value, not from corpporate weakness of results and profits, but from a fundamental lack of credible political leadership and policies. If we were to see some inspirational leadership, then the breath of the Oriental Dragon might just make this year a lot more encouraging than many currently assume. If, however, our political bosses are bland and ineffectual, then prepare for the more deadly Occidental Dragon - complete with breath of fire and no doubt some appalling halitosis. Personally I am with the Chinese Dragon. Happy new year!

January Sales There’s a wonderful Charles Addams cartoon from the New Yorker of God knows how many years ago showing a sale at a big department store, where a huge poster advertises “Genuine reductions!!!” There’s a queue of normal-sized people waiting to go in...and a line of tiny little people Well, January sales can be pretty nightmarish, if not perhaps that nightmarish. But the crowds, the elbowing, the fighting over the priced-to-sell designer schmutter... not my cup of tea, but some people seem to thrive on it. It’s either the hunter-gatherer instinct resurfacing, or just a submerged taste for violence temporarily legitimised, but many shoppers love the scrum so much they even queue overnight with sleeping-bag and thermos of hot soup. (Which begs a question: where do they err, go, in the night? A very real problem when you’re getting on a bit, and one reason why I don’t go camping anymore.) Wikipedia having for once failed me, I’ve been unable to track down the first-ever January sale in history. But there’s a linen draper in Philadelphia that has been holding one since 1878: maybe not the world’s first, but a date that fits nicely into the history of department stores where January sales surely originated. It’s all about Christmas. This wasn’t a big commercial event until the second half of the 19th century – in Dickens’s A Christmas Carol of 1843, it’s almost a normal working day. But by that time major cities were already beginning to sprout department stores: Kendals of Manchester in 1836, Bainbridge’s of Newcastle in 1838, Harrod’s of Knightsbridge in 1849, Lewis’s of Liverpool in 1856, Whiteley’s of Bayswater in 1863 and so on. Whiteley’s always claimed to be the first true department store, but Bainbridge’s had first used the term in 1849: you pays your money, you takes your choice. If anybody can be nailed as being responsible for the commercialisation of Christmas, it was these big department stores. And the January sale was an obvious way of ridding themselves of the season’s surplus stock – not just Christmas consumables, but winter wear in general. Little by little the January sales became more than just a festive afterthought but major events in their own

14

right, and an important injection of cash for the stores before the late-winter doldrums set in. By the dawn of the TV advertising era, some stores gave their sale more publicity than Christmas itself. And nothing seems to have slowed the juggernaut since: at the height of the Harrod’s January sale last year, the tills were taking £20,000 a minute! (Strictly, since 2002, Harrod’s January sale has been its “Winter sale”, since its opening moved to Boxing Day or the day after – so, no nice long Christmas break for Harrod’s staff.) And I am now told by a friend with retail experience that the January sales are no longer even primarily concerned with clearing surplus winter stock, but that fresh stock is ordered especially for the event. Now, I’m no businessman, but this seems dodgy to me. Don’t sale goods have to be displayed for 28 consecutive days at the “established price” before they can be displayed as sale goods? I suppose the stores’ legal eagles have found a way round the Consumer Protection Act 1987, but I bet that trading standards officers have pretty itchy trigger fingers come January. And anyway, if they can make a decent profit selling goods at half-price in January, why not do the same in the other 11 months? I think we should be told...

Continue adding the stock in this way until the rice is tender and has a creamy texture – this will take about 20 minutes. Heat the rest of the butter in a separate frying pan and fry the mushrooms over a high heat for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Stir the Parmesan cheese into the risotto and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the risotto in warmed bowls topped with the fried mushrooms, chopped parsley and extra Parmesan cheese.

Worcester Park Railway Bridge Local resident and commuter Nick Baum launches a campaign to clean up the unsightly graffiti on WPark rail bridge A new campaign has been set up to gain popular support to petition Network Rail to clean up and remove grafitti from the Rail Bridge in Worcester Park. We encourage any local residents to visit the Facebook page to register support. Some notes below: Worcester Park Rail Bridge has been covered in grafitti for probably more than a decade. It is a real eyesore when people enter the area and gives a very bad impression of Worcester Park. No other bridges in the

area look as bad as our bridge and it really lets the area down. We are trying to drum up support to get Network Rail (who are responsible for the bridge) to insist they do something about it. Please register your support by 'liking' or becoming a 'friend' of the site. When we have sufficient numbers we will approach Network Rail and demand (ask nicely!) for them to clean up the bridge and particularly to remove all the grafitti. So far it has been very difficult to get them to take action. Thanks so much for your support - please email this page to anyone else who you think might support this cause! www.facebook.com/pages/Campaign-to-clean-upWorcester-Park-Rail-Bridge/281845198504578

Now settled in Worcester Park, he has 2 young children, is a keen sportsman and enjoys reading crime novels. When did you set up DG Accountancy Services Limited and why? DG Accountancy Services was set up in January 2011 in order to provide a professional and efficient accountancy service in Worcester Park and throughout Surrey. roles in a variety of industries, it was always my aim to start my own accountancy business. What do you love about it? What I love about running my own business is that I get to make the important decisions and choose the path the company takes. I love meeting new people, I enjoy learning new things, I can choose which markets to target, and who my suppliers are. I can work when I like and where I like, which allows me a certain amount of freedom and flexibility that would be difficult to achieve if I were employed. What is your favourite local restaurant and why? In the centre of Worcester Park, Royal India is a particular favourite of mine, both food and service is excellent. On the outskirts of Worcester Park, on the London Road, North Cheam, Nicky’s Restaurant is well worth a visit, as well as great food and service, there are regular themed nights, which generates a great atmosphere. What is great about Worcester Park and what would

you change? Worcester Park is perfectly located, being close to London, and with the A3 and M25 so accessible, commuting is made easy. The main high street has a diverse selection of businesses and shops which reflects the local community. What would I change? The constant road works on Central Road! What is your all time favourite song /artist? The have been so many great artists and songs, but if I had to narrow it down to one, it would be Fix You by Coldplay. If you didn’t work here, where would you like to work and why? If I did not work here, realistically I would be working in Rochester, Kent so that I was closer to my family and friends. Unrealistically, on a wifi linked sun lounger on a beach in Barbados, for obvious reasons… if only! Describe the events in your typical day My day always starts with a nice cup of tea, I read my emails and respond to the ones that require it. I always prepare a To-do list, which I find keeps me organised. From there, my days vary, some days I will remain in the office carrying out client work, others will be spent on the road, seeing existing clients and meeting news ones. Best thing that’s happened to you recently? I have 2 young children, seeing them come into the world was amazing, and seeing them grow and learn is very rewarding. More recently, I was granted a place

in the 2012 Virgin London Marathon, and I have chosen to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer in the process. Getting a place is one thing, completing the 26+ miles is another… Favourite one liner or silliest thing you’ve heard? My favourite one liner (I am such an accountant) is “it’s not what you earn, it’s what you keep that’s important” Your future goal? My future goal is to run a locally recognised and successful company, providing employment opportunities to residents of Worcester Park and contributing to the local economy. On a personal level, I wish to see as much of the world as possible and help create a caring and respectful local environment for my children to grow up in.

Voice for wildlife Carol Williams looks how some of the wildlife around us get through winter In the bleak mid winter Swallows, swifts, cuckoos and many other birds have flown to warmer climes by the time Winter arrives, and others come into the UK from Russia and the frozen North because our Winters are so much milder. Migration is one strategy that animals have evolved for coping with the chill and the food scarcities of WInter; another is hibernation, where the metabolism slows right down and the creature goes into a dormant state which conserves its energy. Squirrels, harvest mice and field voles do not hibernate but remain active all year round. Squirrels can often be seen out in snow searching for their nut caches. Harvest mice come down from the high grass and corn

stalks during the cold season and nest beneath hedges and in clumps of grass. Under the snow, they keep quite snug but they have large appetites for their size because they are so active, which means that many die in hard Winters. Field voles often nest under logs and other objects lying in dry grass and do well beneath the snow, which, like an igloo, is warm. They eat tree bark, roots and bulbs when grass is in short supply. Woodmice sometimes go into a semitorpid state like hibernation which conserves their energy and helps them survive food shortages. It isn’t true hibernation because they wake up at intervals during milder spells to forage. They are the dark brown, large eared, big eyed mice we come across in our sheds and greenhouses and should not be confused with house mice. Animals which go into proper hibernation for Winter include dormice, hedgehogs, bats, frogs, toads, newts, grass snakes and slow worms. Dormice hibernate alone in a nest near the ground amongst tree roots or beneath a hedge. They are now an endangered species, mainly through the loss of coppiced hazel woodland. Hedgehogs sleep through the cold days in a

weatherproof and warm nest of dead leaves. So, we should all view leaf litter as hedgehog blanket material and allow a small pile to accumulate in a corner of the garden. If an underweight hedgehog goes into hibernation it will not have enough fat reserves to see it through the season and it will die. Anyone with hedgehogs visiting their gardens in late Summer/ early Autumn, please feed them with mealworms, meaty dog food or a special mix that can be bought on line and from some petshops. Bats will use caves or the hollows of old trees, depending on the species, but with such places becoming scarcer, numbers are in decline. Adult frogs live on land in damp places for most of the year, hibernating in sheltered spots or the mud at the bottom of ponds. They migrate to their breeding ponds in early Spring and leave the water again in April. Toads hibernate under logs or stones, either singly or in large groups, and usually in dry places not far from their breeding ponds. Most newts hibernate on land in Winter. They will

choose a damp place in garden corners or outbuildings but are never far from water. When active they hide under logs or stones and in thick grass. Grass snakes hibernate in wall crevices and beneath tree roots. Slow worms spend much of their lives underground, where they burrow in soft soil, especially compost heaps. They like to bask in partial sunlight, not in the open, and in Winter they hibernate in their favoured habitat - beneath the ground. So, as you stroll in the woods in Winter or walk in the park or work in your garden, you might like to think about all the small creatures sleeping peacefully through the cold days in a pile of leaves near you or beneath the earth you tread on.

On the grapevine Aret Kapetanovic @ The Vin Bin on some January treats and mixing wine tasting with speed dating!

Happy New Year! Here we are at the start of a new year, and once again it’s time to take stock, take the reigns, and try to be a an all-round better human being! Each year I find myself right back here at the precipice of self-control, but alas, the end of the year comes and all I’ve discovered is a few new vices to give up and add to my long list of New Year’s resolutions! It’s no secret that wine is my passion, and for obvious reasons many people would rather avoid the subject of alcohol straight after the Christmas period (due to either overindulgence, or overspending!), but I like to argue that good wine, good food and good company, are never out of season. I’d like to share with you, if I may, my plans to ease myself into 2012, treat myself to something a little special (without breaking the bank) indulge my passion for wine (without overindulging), and entice people to come out of their post-Christmas caves and join me (more on this later). After the massive over-spend of the Christmas season, buying treats for oneself feels terribly naughty, but actually, this is the time to get some great deals on wine and find yourself an irresistible bargain in the process. (Don’t forget to try Independent merchants for something a little unusual!). Like many others, I tend to eat lighter meals at this time of year to compensate for stuffing myself silly over the last month, and sometimes it can be a good idea to let your wine choice dictate the style of food. For example, I’ll be giving heavy Zinfandels, Malbec, or chunky Cabernet Sauvignons a rest for a little while (at least until February), and try to stick to lighter refreshing wines to be enjoyed in moderation and paired with delicate dishes, preferably with fewer calories! For example, Gruner Veltliner in its more structured form tends to be peppery but with its characteristics of peach and apple, it’s a particularly good match for grilled fish. Spanish Albarino, is light, crisp and aromatic, and its grapefruity qualities work well with crab and prawn dishes as well as Chinesestyle chicken. I doubt that there will be a complete lack of meat in my diet, but I plan to let a lovely Pinot Noir or Beaujolais select the dishes for me on the premise that if I match the body or weight of the wine to the intensity of the foods flavour, I’m less likely to choose a hefty meal to accompany it! Realistically, this good

32

behaviour may not last long, but while it does. I’ll feel better about myself! Now, this is the part of the New Year that I am most excited about! At the end of 2011 I started hosting tastings for a company called Grape Vine Social which, wait for it, offers a genius combination of speed dating and wine tasting.Yes I know, it sounds crazy, but it’s really incredibly fun! The idea is simple. The events are held all over London and the UK at great venues, and are centred on a wine or champagne tasting (you can also choose Beer or cocktails). The tasting is blind which makes it necessary to work in groups, and creates easy conversation and interaction, and of course the combination of wine and a room full of new faces, sets the scene for a highly enjoyable and raucous night! If you’re interested in these great nights out, or know someone who might be, check out www.grapevinesocial.com. To guarantee that they come out of hibernation this month, those of my friends who are single are already booked in, but keep it to yourselves, because they don’t know it yet and after all, vine not?

They will lie to you and give you what seem to be good reasons why you should do what they say. They will ask you not to tell anyone about your win, to keep it a secret. Usually in return you get nothing, or something that is likely to be worth very little and not what you were promised. Our advice is: • Don’t send any money or give any personal details to anyone until you’ve checked them out. • Don’t ring any premium rate 090 numbers to claim your prize…..the longer you stay on the line the more money the scammer earns. • Don’t be intimidated into replying. Protect yourself by being sceptical. • If you discover a scam tell your friends and family. Once your hooked they sell your details to be added to a ‘suckers list’ then lots of other scams start….. including perhaps, letters that predict the future. Psychics or Clairvoyants promise to make predictions that will change the course of your life…..all for a small fee. The letters can be aggressive in tone stating bad things will happen if you do not send money. What we’ve mentioned above are just a few of the lies they may tell you. They are very clever and are constantly devising new ways of getting you to part with your money. They may even tug at your heartstrings with claims that they are a children’s charity. If you cannot check them out don’t give them, or tell them anything. If you have been the victim of a scam you should report it to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or www.consumerdirect.gov.uk For further information and an insight as to how scams have affected others look at www.thinkjessica.com Other useful places for information include: The Office of Fair Trading 08457 22 44 99 or www.oft. gov.uk/consumer/scams Financial services Authority 0845 606 1234 or www.fsa. gov.uk Citizens Advice Bureau www.adviceguide.org.uk Identity Theft Your identity and personal information are valuable. For further information please ring Joyce Shaw on 8642 2845 Here’s a quick review from Christine Boulton, the winner of Worcester Park Life magazines competition to win a family ticket to see The Snow Queen production at The Rose Theatre Kingston. What a wonderful evening it turned out to be. The actors were brilliant and the stage production changed along with the story. The Hans Christian Andersen story magical followed with gasps of amazement from the children in the audience as the characters became larger than life (especially the Snow Queen herself!). It was both colourful and imaginative with snowdrops falling down in a winter scene. The breath-taking storyline of a girls struggle to find her beloved friend, going through heartbreak and snowdrifts and all the obstacles that crossed her path, but she never gave up in her search for the boy she grew up with. We all went home after a happy ending with a warm feeling inside of good old fashioned heartfelt joy and happiness, as once again good had won over evil. Thank you! Tips for keeping the Festive Flower Stunning Do your Christmas plants dry out once the decorations have been packed away? Pippa Greenwood this month suggests how to get the most out of them. Christmas houseplants such as Cyclamen, Poinsettia, Christmas cactus, indoor azaleas and moth orchids have the potential to transform any room in your house, but neglect or give them the wrong care and you’ll end up with a pot of dying leaves before New Year. Here’s how to keep your festive flowers simply stunning: Cyclamen with their showy pink, white or red flowers and exotically patterned leaves make a great indoor plant, but they are very easy to kill. The secret of success is to keep the plants in as cool a room as possible. If you want them in a warm room, put them there at the last possible minute and return quickly. Always water from the base (by standing the pot in a saucer of tepid water for 20 minutes, then letting the excess drain away) and pull off deteriorating leaves promptly. Indoor azaleas also prefer a cooler room, and plenty of moisture is essential. Azaleas have an extensive fibrous root system and are often tightly packed into their pots so they dry out very easily and it’s worth soaking the pot in tepid water at least once a day. Watering with cooled black tea will help to supply the acidic conditions they prefer. Poinsettia with their screaming bright red (or occasionally pink or white) flower-like bracts are the classic Christmas houseplant and they’re not difficult to look after. Keep the compost just moist and choose a draught-free spot in a warmish room. Christmas cacti, usually with rich red, orangey, pink, cream or white flowers are easy to look after but they need totally different care to desert cacti. The Christmas cactus originates from forested areas, so prefers to be kept just moist and hates being baked in hot, dry

44

conditions. Try not to move them about too much once the buds have formed as they may well drop off. Orchids really are a law unto themselves and it’s essential that you follow the care instructions carefully. The most popular type is the moth orchid which will have arrived in a pot with little if any compost and soon the aerial roots will grow out of the top of it. There’s no need to re-pot when this happens initially, as this is how the plant is naturally. Water once a week, ideally with rain water or with cooled boiled water. Most of it will run straight out of the bottom of the pot but it’s meant to - whatever you do, don’t let your moth orchid sit in water. The Christmas Cherry is actually a type of Solanum, related to tomato and potato plants. Covered with its marble-like bright orange or sometimes yellow or reddish shiny fruits it can look stunning. It’s not fussy but doesn’t respond well to over-watering so only re-water as the compost becomes dry. Find a well-lit spot and it’s very tolerant of cooler temperatures. The Hippeastrum, also sometimes sold as the amaryllis, is a stunning houseplant bulb with the potential to produce one of the biggest, brightest indoor flowers you’ll ever have. Red, pink or white are the classic colours. The pot may need to be stood in a larger, heavier one as they are often sold in ones that soon overbalance once the flower spike is out. Keep the compost just moist and supply a warm, well lit spot for best results. Make 2012 the year you start Growing Your Own Vegetables. At www.pippagreenwood.com select the vegetables you’d like to grow and you’ll receive garden ready vege plants PLUS every week Pippa emails you hints, tips and advice.
