Welcome to
our July edition Dear All,
Do you remember that really hot, sunny, humid day, just before the weather turned (again)? Well that is today for me and I am finding it difficult to concentrate!. Diving between computer and garden to enjoy the heat of the sun whilst we still have it. The forecast isn’t great but I really hope that it picks up as we have so many great outdoor events to look forward to –not to mention Wimbledon just around the corner. With my Malden Fortnight Committee hat on, congratulations again to Carmen Burchell, aged 9, from Burlington Juniors who won our logo competition, and thank you to everyone else who entered. If you’ve managed to miss any of our very bright banners, posters or leaflets then you can find out what’s going on here – starting on page 9. We have 20 quite varied events starting on Saturday 6th July events including a Fun Run and a couple of Heritage Walks – you do need to sign up for these online so make sure you get your space reserved. The New Malden farmers market – Market on the Square - is also part of our programme for the first time. Congratulations to all of the businesses and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to add this great community event to the long list of things that make us proud to live in New Malden! There are always tears at the end of term from the children who are moving on and we wish them all luck. Amongst the local staff who are leaving this year we have Mrs Sarah Hobhouse who, after 23 years as Headteacher of Coombe Hill Infants is retiring as is the schools’ caretaker Mr Tuck, who has been there for 24 years. And farewell also to to Mr Chris Moss who is also retiring after 30 years at Christ Church. I know that there will be lots of celebrations to thank them all for everything that they have given to their schools and community. Until next month, Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher p.s. Please remember to mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th July if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the August edition(s).

Malden Fortnight
Saturday 6th July– Sunday 21st July Although the Festival takes place during the first two weeks of July, much planning is needed to ensure we have an entertaining and interesting number of events and to enable schools and all participants to have enough time to organise participation in these events, especially the Parade of Floats on Saturday 6th July. This year’s Parade theme is ‘Country Life’ and we are hoping our participants will use a broad palate when coming up with ideas for their walkers and floats, from butter to tractors, magazines to vegetables – all will be welcome. Last year’s events were particularly successful with a sold out High Street Craft Fair, a much increased participation in the Parade, a fully attended Dog Show, sold out Music concerts, children’s Day of Performance,
not to mention the marvellous Fun Day. We are building on last year’s success and including extra events such as a historical walking tour and a Fun Run. The events are organised by the Malden Fortnight Festival Committee, composed of local voluntary members. It has been run for the last 29 years and is now an integral part of local event planning. It is important to stress that the aim of the Fortnight is to celebrate our local community. We are always on the lookout for new members, from any walk of life, who will be able to bring new ideas to the table or even be able to help in a practical manner. We are currently looking for a new Treasurer and organiser for the Craft Fair. The majority of our events are either self-funded, i.e. raising income from sales of tickets, or from sponsorship. Whilst we are particularly proud and grateful to our sponsors this year, we are always interested in new sponsors, especially local businesses, to help improve both the number and quality of the events.

New Malden History The Parish Hall and how it came about by Robin Gill At the dawning of the 20th century the population of Malden and Coombe was increasing rapidly as was the size of the congregation of Christ Church. There were many ways this could be tackled. The church had been enlarged in 1878 to seat a congregation of 380, and again in 1893 when seating numbers rose to 750. Also the building of Mission Churches in outlying districts of the parish. St Johns on Kingston Road in 1885, and St James in Burlington Road in 1903. The need But, there was also the need for a parish hall. Social events for the church had previously been held in the National Schools in Lime Grove opened in 1870 for Girls and Infants, and Elm Road opened in 1896 for Boys. Accommodation within the premises was limited, and social events had of course to play second fiddle to the children’s education. Firstly, a parish room was built and opened in 1900. This took the form of an iron building built next to the church. Then with hope for the future the land for a Parish Hall at the corner of Coombe Road
and Cambridge Avenue, was purchased in 1914 by Canon Challacombe but, because of the First World War, the building project was put on hold. The money In 1926 the Vicar Of Christ Church was the Reverend Alvan Birkett who had come to Malden five years previous. He announced that the proceeds from the previous year’s garden fete and sale of work together with other money collected amounted to £1000, and this was to be used towards the cost of the proposed hall which was estimated to be £5000 (about £250,000 in today’s money). The money collected rose to around £3000 by July through local sales and fetes, and by the beginning of 1927 only £760 was needed and building started in June that year. Around £1100 was donated by Mrs Ella Marian Rowcroft (pictured above) from Torquay a well known philanthropist, the donation on the understanding that the hall would not be used “for public whist drives, or public dances”. In all, the appeal raised the required funds in just over a year.

The stone The Foundation Stone which can be clearly seen from Coombe Road was laid on Saturday 23rd July 1927 by Frederick George Penny who was MP for Kingston Upon Thames from 1922-1937.The party assembled in the grounds of the vicarage in the afternoon. The pathway was lined on either side by local Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, and the proceedings were led by Dr Hugh Rose Cran (Church Warden, Chairman of the Graham Spicer Institute, and President of The Malden and Coombe Branch of The British Legion). Also present were the vicar and Rev Bryan Green (curate), Cllrs Charles William Spiers and William Salt, and the secretary of the fund Frederick Charles Bunn. The treasurer Dargan Casebourne could not be present. Rev Birkett stated that while the £5,000 had paid for the building, there was still money required for the furniture and fittings. Mr Penny stated that he was honoured to be invited to perform the ceremony, and was sure that the building would be a visible sign of the church for the new generation of Christians. Malden and Coombe had something to be proud of, and the building was a wonderful example of working together in a good cause. The choir, together the guides and scouts, then led the way to the building and on reaching the site the
16
appropriate hymn “Christ is our cornerstone” was sung. Rev Birkett asked that the foundation stone should be placed upon a Bible as it was a parish hall. So in a cavity underneath the stone a Bible was placed containing the names of the officers of the church together with the committee responsible for the erection of the hall. This was joined by relevant Bible texts before the builder Charles Herbert King mixed some cement, and handed Mr Penny a trowel and the mixture was evenly spread, before the stone was placed in position. Mr Harold Bailey the architect then gave Mr Penny a silver mounted ebony mallet with which he tapped the stone declaring it laid. A prayer of dedication was followed

by thanksgiving, the singing of the Doxology, and blessing. The building The building built of red brick, was constructed with two floors. On the ground floor were a committee room, two classrooms, a hall which can hold about 50 people, and kitchen. The floor above had a large hall measuring 60ft by 28ft capable of seating 400 people and equipped with a 15ft deep stage with dressing rooms on each side. On a recent visit I discovered a spiral staircase by the stage leading to the ground floor to enable the actors to use the downstairs facilities, without going through the audience. The whole building was equipped with the relatively new system of “central heating” with a coal fire boiler and cast iron radiators. The celebration The following January the hall was officially opened by the Bishop of Southwark the Reverend Cyril Garbett, who was later to become Archbishop of York. He was accompanied by the vicar, the Rev Bryan Green Rev Zia Bentley of the Congregational Church (now URC), and Rev Ronald Williams from the New Malden Baptists. Also present were Mr Robert Carr-Dodds (Chairman of the District Council), Mr John Edward Bignall JP, Mr John Bliss (Warden), and Mr Percy Champion. The Rev Birkett thanked everyone who had made a contribution towards the building and especially thanked Dr Cran who had supervised the scheme. It was a church hall to be used primarily for church functions. It was to be “the centre of healthful and holy social life”. The Bishop said it was essential that every parish should have a hall in which people could meet for religious and social events. He was sorry that the Rev Green (Curate) was soon to leave the parish as he was aware of his work with the young people. Young people needed organisations, and places to meet, and he hoped the hall would fit the purpose. The evening closed with music from Mrs Max Champion, Harry Tolfree, and Wilder Knight Three days later around a hundred parishioners gathered at Christ Church in prayer, to give thanks for the building. The Rev Birkett must have expressed fond memories of Malden, for when he died many years later in 1966 in Wells Somerset, his ashes were bought back to the area to be buried at Kingston Cemetery. At the same time, the ashes of his only child, John, who was born in New Malden were taken from Manchester Crematorium, and interned in the same grave. John aged 22 had died in tragic circumstances when the Halifax bomber in which he was a flying officer crashed into the hillside at Muckle Knowe in
Roxburghshire. This was on 1st April 1944 while on a night navigation exercise, all eight crew were killed. The building itself, represents a coming together of local people. The architect Harold Bailey, the builder Charles Herbert King, and of course all the church officers, lived within a mile or so of the church. View from the City An alternative way to privatise? by Justin Urquhart Stewart The concept of privatisation I don’t have a problem with, but it has to be at the right time and carried out in the right way. What we can learn from the previous privatisations and demutualisations was that wider share ownership does not necessarily lead to deeper share ownership and the fostering of private portfolios. The method of flotation certainly did little for the companies themselves, especially as it left them with sometimes shareholder bases of hundreds of thousands, which were both unwieldy and expensive to maintain. Many were in fact delighted to see their shareholder register whittled down to more manageable levels, and a few were even able to actually consider addressing their shareholder base as their own advocate and supporter base. Companies can make designs to get the shareholder base they need; what they don’t need is to have numbers foisted on them just to satisfy political dogma. In fact companies seem very rarely to make use of their shareholder base as a marketing arm in its own right. At Barclays I remember trying long and hard to get them to appreciate that most of their shareholders were either staff or ex-staff and, very often, customers - that is to say potentially a great advocacy base for the company if properly martialled. But all to no avail. There are some key issues here. Firstly the economy needs properly functioning utility banks and this needs to be accelerated to help the recovery; pushing Lloyds and RBS back to the market whilst still in recovery seems somewhat odd. Secondly why should we as taxpayers and shareholders (albeit indirectly) not expect to have, not just our money back, but a significant profit as well, and if that will take some years yet, then so be it. However, the government is missing an opportunity here. With the glorious benefit of fully focused 20:20
20
hindsight, it would have been far better if we had packaged up, or at least partially done so, the flotation issues into a bundled unit trust fund of state assets which citizens could have applied for. This would have introduced investment to many for the first time, not in the form of small holdings of one off stock issues, but rather a spread of different assets and companies in a range to provide an immediately more diversified investment portfolio or fund. Again with the benefit of history this would have proved a jolly nice ‘little earner’ for Sid instead of exposing him as an innocent to the vagaries of the stock market, individual holdings and their risks. So, too late now? Well not necessarily so. In fact the government in its desperation to try and find assets to close the deficit and pay down debt has been scouring the cupboards to see what’s left of the ‘family silver’. Whilst the Georgian tea set and furniture has already gone, it seems that we might now be down to the teaspoons. However, before you write those off, they certainly have some combined value. As well as RBS and Lloyds, there is the uranium operator Urenco, the Student Loan Book, something called Plasma Rescources, The Royal Mail, the Met Office and the UK Hydrographic Office. Add to that an interesting

portfolio of property from Law Courts to MoD areas and you could have the making of quite a significant FTSE 100 company made up of a compendium of assets and companies. Now asking investors to buy into this bundle of investments as a fund might be a far more sensible and sound investment especially for the smaller investor. The receipts of course would go back to the government for debt reduction, but maybe here they could also use this as a base point for the UK Sovereign Wealth fund and have a national investment vehicle to invest the proceeds in good projects for the nation’s and its citizens’ futures? So in my view here is a great opportunity for the re-introduction of popular capitalism through a responsible structure, and hopefully we can avoid the political dogma of populist capitalism - which would seem to have the whiff of political advantage being taken prior to an election. Surely not! VVoice Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor.

Family Funday How far can you throw a welly? 7th July 12-4pm Beverley Park "I am going to win the welly throwing trophy this year! " said 10 year old Charlie. Mum was in the winning adult tug of war last year and his little brother came away with a junior tug of war medal, so he is determined to have his name added to those engraved on the Funday Sunday trophies, which are kindly sponsored by the Malden Centre and Toms Trophies. These competitions as well as a number of fabulous races for all the family are all part of the 'fun' of Funday in Beverley Park, this year being held on Sunday, 7th July as part of the Malden Fortnight. Alongside the tug of war, welly throwing and races, you can also enjoy our bar and pimms tent which this year is also serving cocktails and mocktails! and sample something from the BBQ or later in the day , have a cup of tea and cake! This year, we have at least two new additions to this great local event in aid of the Lunchbowl Network , a small, local charity with no paid staff, which feeds and cares for orphans in the kibera slum,Kenya. Korea Foods are going to serve delicious korean food, donating all the profits to lunchbowl, we are incredibly grateful for their involvement and it will be wonderful to sample their amazing fare and hopefully bring Korean food to a wider audience. As well as this, we have an indulgence tent where ladies from Radiance beauty salon will be massaging and mini-facial-ing! any competitor's sore muscles or ladies who'd rather have a bit of pampering. Everything raised in the indulgence tent will

The day kicks off at 12-4pm. Spotlight On
The Wright Couple En Guete!
Paul and Tessa Wright from New Malden have a dream of setting up a charity and local educational centre to teach children how to forage ‘food for free’. In March 2012, Paul was diagnosed with a brain tumour that changed his life. An indefatigable couple, they talk about their recent challenges around ill-health and their motivation for a social enterprise project inspired by a passion for food and all things ‘flora and fauna’. What does ‘En Guete’ mean and where does your passion for food come from? ‘En Guete’ (pronounced ‘Un Gueder’) is a form of Swiss courtesy that literally means ‘have a good one’ - which is like ‘bon appétit’ in French before eating food. Tessa and I have an ‘absolute passion for food and cooking’. Our produce is based on Swiss recipes – cakes, biscuits, cheese, sausages, smoked fish pates and sauces – traditional home-cooking style. What motivated you to move into the food business? I was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012. Ironically, due to my illness and the months of recovery at home, I found that I had the time to do what I loved – cooking! Tessa bought me a sausage machine and so that’s how our food business was born! How did you find out about the brain tumour and what was your reaction? Initially I noticed I was going deaf in my right ear that was very disturbing. After a number of hospital visits, a consultant from Roehampton diagnosed I had a brain tumour by testing me with a tuning fork on different parts of my head. I had a MRI scan which confirmed the diagnosis. I was shocked and all I wanted to know was it malignant or not. I was given the choice of radiotherapy but I opted for surgery being less risky, a better prognosis and age being on my side. It was a bit of a ‘sit back in the seat and have a think about it’ moment. How do you feel now and what are your future aspirations? I have been given the ‘all clear’ where I very much believe in the power of positive thinking going through life. What we dream about is for a piece of land, to keep livestock and to setup a charitable education centre that teaches children about foraging and ‘food for free’. We know there are lots of stepping stones to get there and we don’t actually know how it’s going to happen. I am a firm believer of ‘ask for what you do want and not for what you don’t’. So perhaps there’s somebody who knows of some ‘open’ land suitable for this charitable social enterprise in the New Malden area?
26
What is foraging and ‘food for free’? This is about teaching children how to find ‘free food’, live off the land and an understanding where food comes from. This might be common land or in fact anywhere. Food is seasonal, local to an area - so where and when to forage is important. For example we’re coming up to the elderflower season so now is a good time for picking, cooking and making produce. Why do you believe it’s important for children to have these ‘back to basic’ skills? There are many things that children aren’t taught anymore especially living in an urban area. How
Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers
to cook, make cheese, sausages, gutting fish, skin rabbits, how to keep chickens and ways to live off the land. Today you can ask a child where does an egg come from and the response is a supermarket. Our desire is to show children how to ‘open their eyes’ to everything that nature has to offer. For example, a day out for children and take them fishing: how to bring it home, gut the fish, cook it and the experience eating fresh fish. There are so many things children won’t eat because they aren’t involved in the process or know how to cook it. If we can show children how to be ‘in touch’ with what nature has to offer, our hope is that children will go away with what we call ‘park bench’ memories and be equipped with basic living skills. How do you feel about your deafness and how does it affect you? When I was told I had lost my hearing I did find the news very hard to take. You don’t realise how much you need both ears not only for hearing but it affects dizziness, my balance and on dark nights it’s difficult to walk in a straight line especially if I am tired. I use an ear piece to take phone calls but I don’t use a hearing aid. There is the possibility of an implant in the future to take the sound from my good ear. I will be able to hear in both ears – mono but twice. Although I have permanently lost 50% of my hearing, I am very thankful as it could have been much worse with possible partial or permanent paralysis.
How did you manage your recovery and what helped you through this difficult time? I couldn’t have got through it without Tessa. She is very much the ‘unsung hero’. In fact, Tessa has had to deal with her own long term health issues due to a hereditary gut condition. It was most stressful, as we had to work around two major operations within months of each other. We had to close the business and use all our savings. We planned it so I could look after Tessa when she was recuperating from surgery and vice versa. I went into the operation totally convinced that I would be absolutely fine and all would be well for us both. In fact we both made an amazing and ‘very rapid recovery’ – we had to. What do you do for relaxation and what’s your idea of a perfect day? A perfect day for me involves food, fishing and going on nature walks. I try and go fishing once a week or walking down by the river and bird watching. It’s my escapism and way of not thinking about work. Otherwise the activity of making my own bread helps me relax. I also have a passion for following Swiss carnivals and I just love clowns! Interview by Yee-Liu Williams *En Guete market stall is at New Malden’s Farmer’s Market the first Saturday of each month. 5 Tips for Better Holiday Pictures 1. Fill the frame
If Big Ben is the subject of your photograph, then frame your picture to avoid other distracting elements. Either zoom using the lens or wait until you get closer.
2. Put yourself in the picture
Use a suitable surface to rest your camera on, or carry a simple tripod, then use the camera’s self timer to include yourself in the picture.
3. Use the light
Avoid your subjects looking straight into the sun. Strong contrast and harsh shadows are not very flattering. Position them or yourself to use the available light to best effect. Fill-in flash can help.
4. Explore all the angles
If you find an interesting location, the first photograph you take will probably not be the best or only one. Experiment with different angles and points of view.
5. Be ready
Keep your camera to hand, leave it in auto and be ready to capture those moments that you will want to remember.

Spotlight on Ann Brightwell
I am a member of the New Malden & Coombe
Heritage Group and as part of a project on past recollections have been involved in obtaining details of Ann Brightwell formerly Ann Packer who was a PE Teacher at Coombe Girls School in 1964/5 and whilst there won a Gold and Silver medals at the Olympic Games at Tokyo in the 400 and 800 metres- The first British female athlete to win a Gold medal on the track. Ann writes the following: My first appointment after leaving Dartford College of Physical Education in 1963 was at Lady Edridge Grammar School, South Norwood. 1964 was to be a very special year as the Olympic Games were to be held in Tokyo, Japan and my fiancĂŠ Robbie Brightwell and I were planning to be married on our return to the U.K during the Christmas Holiday. My search for a new position at a school nearer to where he was teaching (Tiffin Boys School ) took me to an interview at Coombe Girls School, New Malden. After being offered a job in the PE department I spent
an exciting Summer preparing for the Olympic Games and looking forward to a new challenge at Coombe. The Head Mistress and Staff had made me so welcome on my first day and the School atmosphere was warm and friendly. Furthermore they had willingly and enthusiastically supported my request for time off during that first term to travel to Tokyo. This, despite the extra burden my absence would put on the department. I have been forever grateful for their generosity. Many athletes at that time were forced to take unpaid leave or worse, faced the sack for pursuing their Olympic dreams. The British Athletic Team, captained by Robbie, enjoyed

a record haul of medals unsurpassed since and after 5 weeks away we were pleased to return home and amazed by the reception we were given including tea with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family immediately after arriving back at Heathrow Airport. Of course we were on a ‘high’ but it was back to work as we had been absent too long! The welcome given to me by the girls and staff was overwhelming even though the school was disrupted yet again by Press and TV, there was a genuine feeling of goodwill and I still cherish the many photos I have of that very special day. Before we went back to School in January, Robbie and I were married and our teaching lives returned to normal. Later that Spring he was offered a post as a PE lecturer at Loughborough College (where he had been a student) from the following September and so, all too soon my association with Coombe Girls School was to be terminated as we headed North. Sadly, I had to say good bye to good friends and colleagues as well as amazing students but I have the fondest of memories of my time with them all. I would appreciate hearing from any pupils at that time who could send me their recollections- I have already received one. My address is Chris Coke, 101A Thetford Road, New Malden, KT3 5DS email address chris.coke@hotmail.co.uk. Below is an interesting recollection from Ann who we hope to visit at her home in Cheshire in August. VVoice

Tip:
To make light gravy to serve with the roast chicken, drain off any excess fat from the roasting tin then heat the pan juices until sizzling. Add a splash of dry white wine or sherry then stir in a little plain flour and 1 tsp wholegrain mustard. Cook for 1 minute then gradually pour in 400ml hot chicken or vegetable stock and slowly bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until

just thickened. Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas Mark 5. Place the chicken in a foil-lined roasting tin. Smear half the softened butter over the chicken breast, legs and wings and scatter over the sage leaves. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the chicken loosely with foil and roast in the preheated oven for 1 hour 10 minutes. Uncover and baste the chicken with any juices twice during cooking. Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a frying pan, add the chopped onion and fry gently for 5 minutes. Chop half the pancetta and add to the pan, frying for a further 5 minutes until the onion is softened and golden. Remove from the heat. Finely chop the rest of the sage and add to the pan with the breadcrumbs and seasoning. Leave to cool then stir in the beaten egg. Press the stuffing mixture into a greased 18cm round shallow cake tin. Uncover the chicken and top with the rest of the pancetta slices. Return to the oven and roast, uncovered, for a further 25-35 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through – the juices should run clear with no sign of pinkness when the thickest part of the thigh is pierced. Cook the stuffing in the oven at the same time until set and pale golden. Remove the chicken from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes. Cut the stuffing into wedges and serve on a platter with the roast chicken, garnished with the fresh sage leaves. VVoice

Home Grown Herbs by Pippa Greenwood There’s a really reliable, easy, low-cost and low-effort way to add some zing to your meals; home-grown herbs. Many herbs are simple to raise from seed and if you start sowing now you should be able to have a plentiful supply of fresh, tasty herbs to add to salads, sandwiches, stews and stir-fries for months to come. All you need to is a sunny window sill or balcony, or a welldrained, sunny spot in your garden. First, find some good quality multi-purpose compost, your chosen herb seeds and some pots. Good-quality compost is well worth the little bit extra you need to pay. The style of pot is up to you – you may want to choose a classic Mediterranean one, or perhaps a goodlooking plastic planter for longevity and light-weight characteristics. Remember that plenty of drainage is essential, and that the smaller herbs do not need a deep root run, so there’s no need for a very tall planter or pot. It’s best to grow each type of herb in its own individual pot, so buy a selection of pots with a minimum diameter of 8cm. Once you have your pot to hand, put a broken flower pot or other drainage material in the base and then fill with good quality compost to within 1cm of the rim of the pot and firm it down, not too aggressively, but enough to ensure that there’s no subsidence later on. With large seeds such as coriander, position the seeds evenly on the compost surface. Sprinkle smaller seed thinly. The seeds need to be covered with compost so use your finger or a dibber to gently press the seed in to the very surface of the compost and then drizzle more compost on top to the depth stated on the packet of seed. Water the compost thoroughly either from above using a watering can with rose attached, or by standing the pot in a saucer of water for a few minutes until the compost surface is just moist. The seeds generally germinate quite quickly and often within just a week or two you’ll have lots of tiny herbs. Once the herbs are up and growing strongly you can start to harvest them. Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut off what you need; this way you’ll minimise damage to the growing plants and so help to keep them cropping for longer. As long as you keep the pots adequately watered, ideally by watering from the base, they should last for several weeks or months but make sure that the compost is not too wet or else your herb pots won’t last long. If you find that you’re not eating them fast enough, store some for later use. Ice cubes give you a really great fresh-herb taste off-season. Just half fill ice-cube tray sections with water. Add chopped fresh herbs to each section and top up with water. Label the tray as they can be difficult to identify. You can then

simply pop them whole into stews and casseroles as and when you need them. Top herbs that grow well from seed: There are lots of herbs which do very well in pots when sown from seed. Some of my favourites include Italian or Genovese basil, lemon basil, chervil, Coriander ‘Cilantro’ for leaves, flat-leaved parsley, Ainse, Thai basil, chervil, chives, fennel, garlic chives. downside to these headphones is the fact that they are open back. This is not convenient for everyone else sitting in the room with you, but hey, sometimes they may just have to deal with it. My favourite approach of getting headphones for my TV was with a concoction of 3.5mm scart adapter, Sennheiser BTD300 audio Bluetooth transmitter or the Avantree Saturn bluetooth transmitter and the Parrott Zik headphones. 100 Years of World Class Aircraft from Kingston Some of the most important British military aircraft were designed and built in Kingston between 1912 and 1992. The aircraft industry was the biggest single employer in Kingston for much of that time and is world renowned, a fact little known or recognised in Kingston except by those who were directly involved. Set up originally by Tommy Sopwith in a Roller Skating Rink near Kingston Station at the end of 1912, the Sopwith Aviation Company rapidly grew through the First World War to employ 3,500 people in Kingston designing and building, amongst others, the famous Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Triplane and Sopwith Camel fighters. Re-starting in 1920 as Hawker Engineering (later known as Hawker Aircraft) their famous designer Sydney Camm devised a hugely successful range of powerful biplane fighters and light bombers before his most famous design the 1935 Hawker Hurricane. The Hurricane was built in huge numbers and they were crucial to winning the Battle of Britain in 1940. Amazingly, with the Sopwith Camel and the Hawker Hurricane, Kingston had provided the most successful allied fighters in both the first and second world wars This painting of a Hawker Hurricane over the Hawker Aircraft Company’s flight sheds at Brooklands reminds us that the thousands of aircraft built in Kingston all left by lorry to be flown from Brooklands, then Langley and, from 1950, Dunsfold Airfield in Surrey. Had there been an airfield in Kingston, local people might have been much more aware of its aircraft industry.
June and a much acclaimed Art exhibition in Kingston Museum. Now it the Malden area’s chance to enjoy all this with the highly acclaimed “100 Years of World Class Aircraft “ exhibition coming to New Malden Library from Saturday 3rd to Saturday 10th August. This is an exciting exhibition of aircraft models, paintings and historic photographs, with slideshows and talks. It includes a children’s area with a colouring competition and great prizes making it an ideal place to visit during the school holidays. Many people from the Malden area worked in the local aviation industry. If you or your family are amongst those, you can meet ex-colleagues in the “Hawker people” area and bring documents and photographs to be scanned for the project website and archives. For more information visit www.kingstonaviation.org
From 1948 Hawker Aircraft Co. moved from central Kingston to the large factory on the Richmond Road in Ham. Their world class aircraft designs continued into the cold war era with Hawker Hunters becoming a NATO standard jet fighter. In the 1960s the team came up with the unique Hawker Siddeley Harrier “jump jets” and in the 1970s the Hawk advanced trainers as used by Red Arrows. These products kept thousands of people employed, as part of British Aerospace, right through to 1992 and hundreds are still in service worldwide. The Kingston Aviation Centenary Project is celebrating the amazing achievements of local people over those 80 years. They held the Kingston Aviation Festival last

Fire safety Dear readers
Lcaused ast year there were over 8,000 fires in London by rubbish. They start easily, and a
large number of fires are started deliberately. Dumped furniture, car tyres, scraps of wood, old mattresses, cardboard boxes, - they don’t just look bad but are a potential fire hazard and a target for arsonists too. Making New Malden safer We have reduced the number of rubbish fires over the years and are determined to keep it that way. We work hard to spot fire hazards on the street and get them removed. We work with schools to educate young people about the dangers of fire. We work with councils and private land owners to help them keep property and open land safe. The London Fire Brigade are launching our ‘Fires are rubbish’ campaign later this year. Working in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, we are encouraging people to be responsible with their rubbish and to take action if they see some lying

around. We will be making it easier for people to report any rubbish they see by sharing information about the services councils already provide. Later this year we will be promoting a new pan London reporting system, that can also be used to report rubbish. What you can do Most of these fires can be avoided by clearing up rubbish, making all of us safer, not to mention making the places where we live look nicer too. If you have furniture or large amounts of rubbish, don’t dump it on the street. Think about what a dangerous fire risk you are leaving for someone to get hurt or the damage it might cause. Kingston & Merton Borough Councils offer help and advice about how to clear-up rubbish on their websites so there is no need to just dump it. So if you spot rubbish that could be a potential fire risk contact your local council, and we’ll be promoting a new pan London reporting system later this year. Top tips to reduce your risk of rubbish fires • Only put rubbish out into the street when it’s due to be collected. • Keep rubbish and refuse containers away from doors and windows. • Keep exits and escape routes clear of rubbish. • Report fly-tipping to your local council. • Contact your local council if you have any large items to be removed – they will often take them away free of charge. If you see someone deliberately starting a fire call the Police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Nic Myatt, Station Commander , New Malden Fire Station VVoice

The Better Life Compost Mentis by Derek Thompson
Very few of our neighbours know about my writing this column and it’s safe to bet that none of them have ever read it. And it may surprise you to know that I’m perfectly happy with that state of affairs. After all, I have never claimed to be a green sage (see what I did there...). We simply do our bit wherever and however we can, and report back our little misadventures.
However, occasionally, someone (usually by email) does ask my opinion about how to live a more environmentally aware existence, growing your own, or doing more with the garden.
And when that happens, I say one magical word: compost. Because, to me, nothing epitomises Green Living like the joy of composting. It relies on waste, natural decomposition and, once you’ve sorted out the basics, a minimal amount of attention. And yet, at the end of it, you have nutrient rich plant fodder for free. What could be greener than that? Remember those science lessons at school? Well, this should be a breeze in comparison. Successful composting of waste relies on the addition of warmth, oxygen and water. You could call it the wow factor. You could, but trust me - Anne wouldn’t like it. You also need to be aware of the Carbon to Nitrogen ration. Now, before you run screaming to the hills (green ones, naturally), let’s simplify that. The carbon contribution comes from cardboard and paper (not the glossy kind), straw, dried grass and leaves, and sawdust (we sometimes get extra when we pick up some for the chickens). The nitrogen contributors include fruit and vegetable kitchen waste (because even chickens have their limit), grass cuttings and even plants that have seen better days. I’m reliably informed that a good ration of carbon material to nitrogen material is upwards of 20 to 1.

But I have to be honest and say that we simply adjust the mix as and when required (partly determined by whatever’s going on in our gardening and recycling). Our composting tub, which looks like an out-ofcondition Dalek, sits on a flat concrete surface and receives some direct sunlight. I mix the compost regularly to aerate the pile, although my grunting noises are completely optional. Very occasionally I will also sprinkle some water, if it looks like it’s becoming dry. Nature likes to give composters a hint or two. The presence of worms is a good indication that all’s well. Fruit flies, however, as well as being a minor irritation, are a sure sign that you need more carbon in the mix. The same goes for runny mulch. The presence of an ant nest in there calls for more moisture - and some say increasing the heat will help move them on. Rodents are very bad news. You need to make your compost heap impregnable. You could try a cat, unlike ours, who works for a living. My final tips are to give the compost time to develop and to avoid accidentally colliding with the tub when it’s top heavy, because you’ve evacuated the lower half where the good stuff lives. Otherwise, like me, you’ll end up wielding a shovel. And you won’t come up smelling of roses. VVoice
