Worcester Park Life In our look at The Avenue, from which we have taken an interval for a couple of months as other subjects came up, we have reached the corner of Woodlands Avenue.

history

A Summer Fair and a Royal Wedding by David Rymill

This is the entrance to the ‘Avenue’ estate, which until the 1930s was part of Worcester Park Farm, operated from a farmhouse in Central Road (roughly on the site of Superdrug), part of the estate owned by the Stone family. Their property extended across most of Stoneleigh, which is named after them. When the railway was built in the 1850s, the Cattle Arch (now part of Dewsbury Gardens) provided a means of getting livestock between the farm buildings and the fields on this side of the line. The first section of Woodlands Avenue was not originally part of the Stone family’s property. In order to realise the development value of this farm, the Stone trustees bought this strip of land for £755 in 1928 from Mr Baldwin, the owner of Oaklands, the next house in the Avenue. Little more than a year later, it began to seem as if the purchase had been unnecessary: in July 1929 Ralph Stone was informed by one of his fellow trustees: “Some of the residents in the immediate neighbourhood of the Avenue are promulgating a scheme to purchase 90 acres… for [the] purpose of a Golf Course.”

was sufficiently wide to allow the kitchen to be placed behind it, avoiding the need for the kitchen back-extension common in earlier houses. Upstairs, the principal bedrooms were placed above the reception rooms, with a small third bedroom over the hall, and the bathroom over the kitchen. The builders provided variety by using a range of features on the façades. Since the 1880s, designers of larger houses had been returning to traditional vernacular materials, such as the black-andwhite half-timbering of the west Midlands, the tile-hanging of the south east, and the decorative plasterwork of East Anglia. Suburban builders incorporated all these features, mixing half-timbered gables, leaded windows, and walls of red brick or tile to give Londoners the chance to own a cottage within commuting distance of their offices. u

Nothing came of this scheme, however, and in 1933 a number of plans were submitted to the planning authorities in Epsom for the layout of an estate here, initially by local builders Lavender and Farrell, and then by Atkinson and Marler, the agents responsible for the overall development of most of the Stone family’s property. In Edenfield Gardens, development began in about 1934; the first part of the road was developed on Middle Meadow (to the right) and Upper Meadow (to the left), while most of the houses above the junction with Fairford Gardens stand on Buckwheat Field. In Worcester Park we can see many roads of 1930s houses, and it is worth overcoming our familiarity with the inter-war style to appreciate some of the subtleties used by the builders. The houses on the ‘Avenue’ estate generally follow the most common Thirties pattern, using the ‘Universal plan’ layout with a ‘Tudorbethan’ exterior evoking the English country cottage. The layout consisted of a sitting-room at the front, with a dining-room behind, and a hall that To advertise in

A Summer Fair and a Royal Wedding by David Rymill The pairs of semi-detached houses on the left side of Edenfield Gardens display a number of features associated with the upper end of the Thirties market: the half-timbering is extended over the whole of the façades, and oak doors with false iron hinges are emphasised by large porches. On the prominent corner site are houses suggesting a particular concern for authenticity, with projecting upper storeys mimicking the ‘jetty’ of timber-framed buildings, while others feature the sweeping gable, a vernacular feature re-introduced by C F A Voysey into country-house architecture around the turn of the century, and standardised for the suburban market. Between Edenfield Gardens and Salisbury Road is

Shadbolt Park with its paddock. The paddock will be the venue on Saturday 18 June for the Cuddington Community Fair, organised by St Mary’s Church and involving many local groups. The fair will be open from 12 noon to 4pm, and entry is free. There will be many stalls, selling home-made cards, plants, needlecraft, jewellery, books, cakes, etc, and numerous sideshows. Arena events so far arranged include an opening performance by the Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide Band, the popular dog show, and dancing by pupils from Auriol Junior School. Refreshments will be available, including a barbecue, fresh fruit, Pimms and teas. On another theme – the Royal Wedding was marked by street parties in a number of roads in Worcester Park. In the Old Malden area, the residents of Leyfield proved particularly enthusiastic: about 20 tables, many of them decorated, ran along the roadway westwards from Lady Hay, as shown in one of our photographs. (Also see page 18). Adults and children enjoyed games including apple bobbing and egg and spoon races. In Cuddington Ward, children assembled at St Mary’s for a fancy dress parade along Delta Road, followed by tea in Rowe Hall. When I called in to Worcester Gardens I found numerous members of the Royal family present, at least by proxy, as our other photograph shows – and the event continued with welly throwing and fireworks. 2nd Worcester Park Brownies and Rainbows celebrated with a special tea a few days early. I understand that street parties were also organised in Manor Close and Risborough Drive – any further details would be welcome. david.rymill@hants.gov.uk WPLife

The tale of a former technophobe by Ruth Jemmett

In this technological age, when even very young children are comfortable with computers, and the world we once knew seems to have been taken over by the internet and Blackberries (keep up at the back there - it isn’t a fruit), it is easy to imagine that everyone you know is e-mailing the world. If you have already lost interest it is probably because you are one of the many people in Worcester Park - or indeed the whole country - who are definitely NOT computer literate, and who come out in a cold sweat when confronted by modern gadgets. Because the media constantly bombard us with instructions on how to send an e-mail or text to our favourite television or radio programme, it is easy to forget that there is a whole swathe of the population (many of them aged over sixty) for whom the onslaught of modern fast-moving technology holds all the attraction of a root canal filling. But take heart dear reader. I too was Mrs Technophobe until a year ago. Despite the fact that my husband uses a computer both at work and at home (and would probably take his laptop to bed given half a chance) I turned a deaf ear to his pleas that I should join the twenty-first century. Even when my son, who has an impressive string of I.T. qualifications (that means Information Technology for you at the back) begged me to stop asking him to reply to incoming e-mails on my behalf, I clamped my hands firmly over my ears and sang “La, la, la!” loudly. I’m ashamed to admit that until a couple of years ago I hadn’t even used a mobile ‘phone! In a previous life I had been a fully trained secretary with speedy shorthand skills who could easily unravel the mysteries of a manual telephone switchboard, a Telex machine, a Dictaphone and a Roneo copier. (At this point those of you who were born after 1970 will be glazing over and muttering “What century did SHE live in?”) . During those distant days I was considered to be an allround office whiz-kid. These days I’m just becoming more round.

Then, a few months ago I began to feel like an outsider in the modern world. Friends and family would have in-jokes about their exploits on Web sites. (Hey, you at the back - it’s nothing to do with spiders). They would look at me in a pitying way, until one day I suddenly said to myself “If you can’t beat’em, join ‘em!” Against my better judgment and every instinct in my body, I ordered a laptop - a pink one.

When the object of my disquiet arrived I initially felt very excited, and then realised that I didn’t have the foggiest idea how to work the darned thing. My husband patiently set the system up for me (with many patronising looks and tutting in my direction. He and my son kept glancing at each other and smirking as I asked things like “What is a mouse?” I was getting so annoyed at their attitude that I knew I HAD to throw myself into the computer age - or else I might have been tempted to do something dreadful to them with that mouse! Initially I felt like a child on their first day at school, continually asking questions and feeling completely out of my depth. (After all, my son, who was my chief mentor, gained a Distinction in Computer G.C.E. twenty-two years ago. No wonder my questions regarding basics gave him the demeanour of a genius being forced to watch The Jeremy Kyle Show). Bit by bit (or byte by byte? - an in-joke that those of you at

the back of the class won’t understand …) I began to assimilate the wonders of the computer age. I made a point of writing down anything I had trouble in remembering, and gradually learnt how to send and receive e-mails, search on The Web (shopping has never been so easy) and get into the Word programme, which I am writing this article on. Recently I decided to have a ‘Girls Only’ computer evening. I use the term ‘Girls’ loosely as most of my friends still have their ration books from World War Two….) at which we could share our knowledge. It was a roaring success and we plan to have some more.

So if you are of ‘a certain age’ and feel nervous about entering this exciting new world, take courage from my experience. If I can overcome the complexities of all this technology, anyone can. After all, you are reading the words of someone who once got on a camel at London Zoo back to front (no, it wasn’t last week - I was eight at the time!) and can now tell the difference between a dongle and a blog.

Food for thought

Voice Park Life view fromVillageWorcester

by Justin Urquhart Stewart Here are two sobering facts about our current market. Firstly someone has agreed to pay $8.5bn – not million – for a loss making online telephone system. Secondly we are about to see a new flotation of a social networking site whose prospectus has the following statement: “we expect our revenue growth rate to decline and, as our costs increase, we may not be able to generate sufficient revenue to sustain our profitability in the long term”. Hardly the most positive of statements - especially in a prospectus designed to encourage investors to part with their cash. Despite this, the business has an expectation that it will be valued at around $3bn. This would mean that it would be set at around 13 times last year’s sales. However, maybe this is relatively cheap as only last week the Chinese social network Renren floated at an amazing level of 72 times sales!

the city

The first company is Skype, where the cash laden Microsoft are willing to pay just about anything to find something which will make them more appealing to the user and to get away from their image of being the unacceptable Shrek of the software world. The second is LinkedIn where they hope to entice investors into buying their shares in the vain hope that one day, at the end of the rainbow, there is a crock of gold for bold investors.

In my view this seems to have all of the investment logic of those dotcom days of over a decade ago. Just an update on the Greek “non default” default. As I have been warbling on for an age, a default by whatever nomenclature seems inevitable and frankly constructive given the current impasse. Of course the key issue is the strength of those banks that hold this debt and how much pain they could have to suffer. The FT stated last week that if the bondholders were to take a 50% “haircut” then the pain could be quite significant for some of the lead debt holders, with BNP Paribas taking €1.7bn, Commerzbank €1.1bn, and RBS -whose exposure was thought to be relatively small - an unpleasant half a billion Euros. Then of course we may well have others to follow, and for Ireland the RBS number with its Ulster Bank subsidiary could be significantly larger. WPLife

The Royal Wedding Street Party Leyfield

The Royal Wedding Street Party – Leyfield Along with many others in the borough, Leyfield in Worcester Park managed to organize a fantastic street party. Amazing efforts from Shirley McNamara and neighbors lead to a fabulous congregation nearly reaching 150 friends and residents.

The road was cornered off from 9.30am and the tables began to form running up the middle of the street with decorations to celebrate the wedding. It was absolutely fabulous to see the children playing in street with hula-hoops, scooters and ball games. Several gazebos sheltered in the drives along with BBQ’s where neighbors had the opportunity to sample and share food and drink. In true British summer style the street participated in egg and spoon races and bobbing apples, which was

Cheam Woodturners Association

clubs

VillageWorcester Voice Park Life

Cheam Woodturners Association was formed in 1997. Meetings are held at 7.30 PM on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the Elmcroft Centre, London Road, North Cheam, which is next to the Sainsbury Supermarket. The club is dedicated to promoting the art of woodturning and encouraging anyone interested to take part. The club is affiliated to the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and is the only affiliated club in the local area. The club has about 65 members, aged from 15 upwards, whose ability ranges from absolute beginner, some of whom do not even own a lathe when they join, through to professionals who earn their living at woodturning. The club has a comprehensive programme of events which includes practical demonstrations by turners who are famous, even world famous, among the woodturning fraternity and practical sessions when club members can learn and practice new techniques using the club equipment. Every evening includes a raffle where the prizes are woodturning tools and products and there is also a display of members work. In addition members can purchase tools and abrasives at the club. In addition to the regular evening events the club also organises training sessions at members own workshops for the benefit of the less experienced members. Other club activities include trips to exhibitions and companies specialising in woodturning products. The club also runs its own website, which can be found at www.cheamturners.co.uk. In addition to all this, the club also organises “Tree Harvests when members recover wood from fallen or felled trees, which have been offered to them free of charge. The club has exhibited at many local events, such as the Sutton Environmental Fair and a number of the members will accept commissions for specially turned pieces. New and potential members are always assured of a warm welcome and can come along on club evenings to see if they would like to join. Details of membership can be obtained from:

WPark Royal British Legion Celebration Weekend

Along the length and breadth of England Legion clubs will be celebrating the existence of The Royal British Legion for 90 Years, ours is also a special double celebration as our Branch is 80 years old as well. It has been a long journey for the Branch starting out at the rear of what was Brabhams garage to getting the club as it exists now, sometimes through rocky times but the fight goes on to keep the Branch and Club alive in these troubled times. With the recent conflicts in mind it seems the least we can all do is to support the Legion, so that all our troops can get the best possible back up to support them in their time of need. It’s not all about giving but showing support, as we have had some service personnel at the club from Headley Court it makes you feel very humble when you see how well they are coping with their injuries.

Vinyl

Worcester Village Voice Life Techno Park

by Vernon Hamblin @Unilet This is probably the most non-technical TechnoBlog so far. The numbers listed above don't refer to anything digital. They are not the sizes of any binary file I can think of apart from 16 which coincidentally does happen to be the bit-rate of a CD. Those numbers actually refer to the various rotational speeds utilised over the last 100 years to extract sound from a round bit of plastic called 'The Record. The history of its name is as simple as the basic electromechanical process required to recover the sound from its surface. It is not a slang for 'Recording' as many might believe. In the early history of recording, the choice of what to capture to the rotating black disc was simple...The human voice. Once realized, it was not a giant leap to capture singers, small groups, famous speeches and finally orchestras. The equipment required was more or less portable. What we now know as a recording studio simply didn't exist. The discs produced were generally a 'one-off' so they were therefore , a 'Record of that performance'. These 'records' were 78rpm Shellacs mostly destined for libraries, public or private. However, as you might imagine, it wasn't very long before the idea of those 'records' being used for public performance occurred, and the rest, as they say... Setting the Standard... By the mid 1950's the 12'' vinyl microgroove record standard had been set and has remained ever thus. Here we are over 50 years later and there is no sign of it going away. It has survived every battle waged against it?...Why? Part of the answer, I think, is simply history. Until the sales of CD's eventually overtook that of vinyl in the late 80's every single music milestone since the 1920's had been committed to the Record first. From Robert Johnson to Eric Clapton, Stokowski to Solti, Louis Armstrong to Weather Report. Presley, Miles Davis, Ella, Beatles, Dylan...the list goes on and on. Nostalgia? Possibly. I am not saying that everything that came after 1988 didn't matter. I am suggesting that as a medium, the CD, USB stick or even a download simply doesn't have the gravitas of the Vinyl LP. Then there is the cover artwork which is so much more tangible, and when it's spread over a gatefold sleeve! The care required to extract the LP from that sleeve, place it on the turntable, clean the Stylus and then listen out for that click and crackle from the 'run-in' groove. Finally that sound...it has a naturalness which is absolutely unequalled. It's real!! There is also the very real sense of ownership of something that has been crafted, not just manufactured. It is true that the steady increase in bit-rates over the last 20 years have vastly improved the sense of 'realism' of digital recordings. The recording industry has always recognised that 16, 18 and 20-Bit were never high enough numbers to capture the analogue wave form accurately, for either recording or remastering. Don't

get me wrong though, my enthusiasm for the vinyl record doesn't mask the fact that you did (and still can) get a duff pressing or two. But you can also get a duff CD. Your internet connection can go down and ruin that download you almost finished. But if the record is looked after, regardless of whether the original recording is analogue or digital the sound of your chosen artist from that bit of vinyl is still more natural. It's analogue and that's how we (as humans) hear. Finally, here's an interesting number...24. Another is 55...

Vinyl records are now 55 years old, and 24-bit is now the standard used to record in the digital domain. So how do the two meet? Here's why... You see, the major record companies are now very reluctant, for obvious reasons, to use the original master tapes of classic albums.Virtually all of them are now archived on 24-bit hard drives anyway. However, all of those record companies continue to reissue iconic titles on vinyl. Indeed, modern artists also release their catalogues on vinyl and their recordings are digital. Recording entirely in the analogue domain is a rare occurrence nowadays. It is a matter of fact that modern high quality 180g and 200g reissues and all the latter day recordings released on vinyl are more often than not cut and pressed from 24-bit digital files. And there is nothing wrong with that because those files are generally of a very high quality. In fact, if the original source tape(s) and the 24-bit archive were presented back-to-back, most people would struggle to detect a difference. So the ancient format that is the Vinyl Record is actually bang up to date. It is more than capable of reproducing high bit-rate digital recordings and, by virtue of that fact, it generally sounds better than most Compact Discs. Don't forget, CD is still only 16-bit! Vinyl sounds better than just about any other format we can think of as well. Yes, we did have SACD and DVD-Audio for a while and both of these digital formats were 24-bit, but both of those carriers have more or less died...yep, you guessed it. Another format war! But irrespective of all of this, we are still left with the Vinyl Record happily playing 24-bit resolution in the analogue domain. Full circle?...Literally! Has this article been an unabashed and poorly disguised advert for the vinyl department at Unilet Sound & Vision? You bet it has. We currently carry over a thousand new titles on vinyl. We also have a similar number of immaculate and beautifully presented pre-owned records to purchase as well. All of which have been professionally cleaned using a VPI wet vacuum record cleaning machine. Cleaning your old vinyl is a service we can also offer. GET YOUR OLD RECORDS OUT! PLAY THEM! YOU'VE FORGOTTEN... VINYL IS KING! SOME PEOPLE THINK VERNON IS MAD...do all of this and judge for yourself. WPLife

Ticket only event. 19th June: 8.00 am Said and 9.45 am Sung Eucharists. Church Open 2.00 – 4.00 pm. 7.00 pm. A Pageant Through the Ages. (An evening of early music and words). Open to all. Free Admission. Disabled parking only. 22nd June at 8.00pm and 23rd June at 10.00 am A talk on Bible Translation and the Authorised Version. 25th June: Maeldune Fayre on Plough Green from 11.00am – 3.00pm. Church open 2.00 – 4.00 pm. 26th June: 9.45 am Patronal Festival – celebrating what God has done in the Parish since 1611. Church Open 2.00 – 4.00 pm. The church has a long and interesting history. First mention of the Saxon church at Maeldune (which means the cross on the hill) was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. Walter de Merton became the Lord of the Manor of Malden in 1240 – he later became Chancellor of England and Bishop of Rochester. He founded the earliest Oxford College (Merton) which was supported by revenue from his estates including Malden. To this present day Merton College has the right to appoint the vicar of this parish. By 1585 the church was decaying and the Malden villagers petitioned Queen Elizabeth 1 asking for help – but nothing was done. By 1609 the church was beyond repair so another appeal was launched, successfully this time. Thomas Ravis, Bishop of To advertise in

1611 Celebrations London, who was born in Malden, and John Goode, Lord of the Manor, were both involved in the rebuilding, with contributions from many in the parish and beyond. The nave and tower were entirely rebuilt in red brick but the lower part of the old flint and stone chancel walling was patched up and retained. The work was completed in 1611. By the late 19th century the church was too small for the growing village so a large Victorian extension was built in 1875 (which is now the present nave and chancel), and the old church became our Lady Chapel. In 2004 a two-story contemporary extension was built for much needed rooms for informal services, children’s ministry, choir vestry and long awaited kitchen and toilets. WPLife

The 4th Worcester Park Scout Group by Paul Green

The 4th Worcester Park Scout Group is now in its 78th year and still thriving. We are based at our site on Braemar Road, nestled amongst the residents of Worcester Park. Our Headquarters provides areas for camping, scouting skills, training and events. We have two halls, several meeting rooms and plenty of storage space. We are most fortunate that our members and supporters (past and present) are so willing to give of their time to help the young people and to assist with the running of the headquarters. The scout group currently have over 200 young people who meet every week during term time. Along with the 100+ adults involved with the group, we have achieved the dizzy heights of being in the top ten largest scout groups in the

country. Some of our adult members are part of the Scout4x4 who featured in the local press during the snow earlier this year. Some are leaders and work with the young people and some members are supporters helping with events and fundraising. Whatever the adult members do - they do it FREE. No member of the group is paid for their time and I would like to publicly thank everyone who helps us.

The Group is currently working on a "Group Development Plan". This sets targets to achieve over the next 5 years. So far, we have been successful with some grant applications from the Sita Trust and Sutton Community Volunteer Scheme. Together with our own fundraising, we have been able to renew some of our electrical system, install a new heating system, replace worn floors, replace storeroom doors and refit our kitchen. From an activity point of view, besides the more traditional Scouting activities such as camping, hiking etc our young people have to opportunity to participate in more adventurous activities such as mountaineering, archery, power boating & water sports and 4x4 offroading. In the last year, we have opened a new beaver colony for 6-8 year olds and developed our scout active support unit for our adult members. I think it would be fair to say that the adults have as much fun as the young people. Our next target is a new activity building. Recently we have been granted planning permission for this. The new building will provide covered activity space for archery, bouldering and other activities. It will also provide a new workshop and store. The cost of this is expected to exceed £70,000 so our fundraising team are more important than ever. Funding comes from subscriptions paid termly by parents, gift aid, small grants and donations and we are most fortunate to

have our own highly committed fundraising team, without them we would find it difficult to achieve our plans Last year the Fund Raising Team raised around £14,000 by running and organising 13 events during the year. They organised jumble sales, fetes, a Casino Night, a Quiz night, a firework display and much more. This massive amount of work is undertaken by a small team which would like to grow with the help of more volunteers. Without an increase in the membership of the fundraising team the number of events might have to be limited and this in turn will limit the amount of money which can be raised. We are keen to have some new ideas and team members willing to join us. We actively encourage parents and families to get involved as we are all there for the same reasons - To benefit the young people and have some fun! If you are interested in getting involved, PLEASE email me on gsl@4wp.org.uk. The Fundraising Team meets approximately once a month for about 45 minutes to discuss future events, ideas and planning. If you are not able to get involved in the meetings, we always need help at the events. WE NEED YOU and the young people need us all to continue to provide our facilities, experience and training. A Rep to protect by Aret Kapetanovic of the Vin Bin

wpark wine

I’m writing this on my return from the 2011 International Wine Fair at the ExCel and wanted to share the experience with you. For those that have spent years in the wine trade, I imagine it all becomes quite dull and repetitive, but for my husband and I it is still a very exciting time to catch up with friends, discover new wineries and meet some wonderfully larger than life characters. Even with the careful spitting, fifty plus wines in one day can get interesting (plus it was my husbands birthday!) The first person that we bumped into was none other than Quentin Sadler, the well respected wine writer and educator who is also a fellow Worcester Parkian! Quentin has a wonderful blog documenting his extensive travels and experience of the worlds wine regions. Follow his exploits atquentinsadler.wordpress.com This year some of the more savvy companies have employed fail-safe methods to seduce the merry punters to their stands, one setting up a Playstation with interactive sports games (alcohol and sports very clever), and the other obvious ploy of hiring highly attractive and long legged members of the fairer sex, to wear the company logo and short skirts (very very clever!). One particular lady seemed to be working as a sort of pied piper of Spanish Cava with a trail of red wine stained enthusiasts in tow! The industry lends itself to flamboyant characters and new wineries looking for distribution do well when they have such a character at the helm. The standout Winery for us this year was that of Californian winemaker and restaurateur Lorenzo Petroni. Originally from Tuscany, Mr Petroni’s experience and understanding of wine, combined with an organic grapegrowing philosophy with minimal intervention in the cellar and a faith in Sonoma Valley as a premium winegrowing region is the driving force behind Petroni Vineyards. . He is a big man with a big personality and his authentic Tuscan charm and love of classic Italian winemaking styles, comes together beautifully to produce some outstanding wines which as of yet do not have any distribution in the UK. There has been a rise in interest in high class Californian wines and I have no doubt that before long they will be available in London. Go to www.petronivineyards.com for more information on these fantastic wines. Nothing catches the attention of the public more than a good gimmick and Vernissage certainly has that! At first many were sure that the wine in a box idea would simply not catch on, and yet years after their launch they are still going strong and are often the choice for summer barbeques and parties in the UK. Vernissage has taken this concept a step further. If Paris Hilton were to buy her wine in a box, what would she want it to look like? Yep…..a designer handbag! It will be interesting to see how they market this product when it comes to the

46

Please remember to

mention Worcester Park Life

UK, but I do think there will be a market for it. Their choice of grape varieties such as a Chardonnay/Viognier blend, are not the easiest varieties to sell, but at approximately £25 on the shelves in London they will be looking at a selective clientele (look out for it on The Only Way is Essex!) Take a look for yourself at www.vernissagewine.com. As the first day comes to an end, the masses are slightly rumpled and you can recognise the red wine enthusiasts from the oddly purple/black teeth they’re sporting. Thousands of bottles of expensive fine wine are being poured away as my husband looks on with a tear in his eye, and I have to dissuade him from a last minute tug of war with a startled rep. We make our way with hundreds of others onto a packed but merry DLR, and bump into a young wine distributor with whom we had spoken earlier in the day who seems to have mislaid his Italian accent somewhere at the ExCel! Roll on day two! Match this months recipe (page 45) with a Chenin Blanc or a Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc blend. South Africa produces particularly good versions of this and the subtle sweetness will really compliment the hotness of the chilli. WPLife

All of a sudden, it seems the weather has warmed up considerably and a recent incident in Waitrose car park has prompted me to highlight this all too common summer problem. Leaving dogs in cars: If it’s warm outside and you’re thinking of going out in the car, think carefully about what you are going to do with your dog. It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it might not seem that warm. When its 22 degrees C / 72F outside, the temperature inside the car can soar to 47 degrees C / 117F within 60 minutes. Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stuffy car, dogs can’t cool down - leaving a window open or having a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Even if it’s cloudy, don’t leave your dog in a car, caravan or conservatory,

Dogs die in hot cars by PCSO Gary Weaving

the sun may come out later and make it unbearably hot. You have a DUTY OF CARE to your pet. Under the A n i m a l We l f a re Act, you have a legal duty to care for your animals and if you put them at risk, you could face prosecution. You would also have to live with the fact that your thoughtless action resulted in terrible suffering for your pet. A proportion of the text reproduced with kind permission of the RSPCA.
