Welcome to Your Village Voice So it’s official, spring has sprung at last! The bulbs are sprouting up and at last we are awash with snowdrops and daffodils. The days are getting longer and the temperature just slightly warmer. Although come on…. we’re all far too accustomed to the British weather to be lulled into a false sense of security and to dare pack away our winter boots quite yet (let alone, bring out the flip flops!). We still need to be on our guard for those April showers (and a final flirtation with winter). April sees the start of the summer school term. For me that means the last term ever of primary school – well, for my daughter. I am soon to be redundant from the school run, and owing to a very nasty sick bug have been denied walking her these last few days of term. A big change for us all – does that mean it’s time to get a puppy? Remember that the Village Voice is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. Did you know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of the KT3 postcode, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, New Malden library, Tudor Willams and the Malden Centre but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes

New Malden History Malden From Beginning To End by Robin Gill
Opposite the entrance to Blakes Lane off Malden Road stands Wickham Close, a modern cul de sac. What is not generally known is that this is the site of a Victorian property called Coombefield. There is no indication anywhere, that this was the birthplace of two of the best golfers from England in the first half of the twentieth century. Sporting family Roger Henry Wethered was born at Coombefield on 3rd January 1899, he was baptised at St John The Baptist in Old Malden on 1st March. He tied for the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1921 but lost the subsequent play-off. Had he won, he would have been the last British amateur to win the title. He had to be persuaded to take part in the play-off on the Sunday, as he had promised to play in a cricket match in London!
Roger’s youngest sister Joyce was born at Coombefield on 17th November 1901, and baptised at St John The Baptist (Old Malden) on 18th December. The family moved from Malden to Tigbourne Court in Witley around 1906.
Early days Despite having only one formal lesson, Joyce learnt the game of golf as a child, during family holidays to Bude in Cornwall, and in Dornoch in Scotland, where the family had a house next to the course. It was on this course that she won her first tournament in August 1919. At the age of 18 she entered the English Ladies Championship of 1920 at Sheringham in Norfolk where she triumphed over Cecil Leitch the reigning champion, and ten years her senior, in the final. She beat Leitch again two years later to win the first of her four British Amateur titles. Her most memorable victory took place at St Andrews (the home of golf ) in 1929 against the no 1 American Glenna Collett. Even though she was five down early on, she fought back to win on the penultimate hole before a crowd numbering around 3000.

Unfortunately the Wethered family lost a lot of their money in the Wall Street Crash later the same year, resulting in Joyce having to take a job with Fortnum and Masons advising customers on their choice of golf equipment, and later endorsed clubs made by the Spaldings company. Sadly, this meant she lost her status as an amateur, and could no longer play in such tournaments. She therefore decided to tour America in May 1935 for three months, playing exhibition matches with such players as Gene Sarazen, Bobby Jones, and Walter Hagen, more than holding her own and banking £4000 into the bargain(nearly £200,000 today). Titled lady She won the British Ladies Amateur Title four times (1922, 1924, 1925, and 1929) and the English Ladies Championship for five years (1920-24), undefeated in 33 matches. She also represented Britain in international competition from 1929-1932 She retired from competitive golf in the 1930s, and was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975, the first English woman to register that achievement. All this success was earned while wearing golfing attire more akin to going on a Sunday afternoon picnic, not like the modern designed clothes of today. What made her so successful? She was 5 ft 10 ins and had excellent balance, could hit a ball long distances (up to 240 yards) in a straight line, and above all was able to concentrate on her shots despite distractions. A great golfer Henry Cotton said “I have no hesitation in saying that she is the finest golfer I have ever seen” and to quote Bobby Jones “I have not played golf with anyone, man or woman, amateur or professional who made me feel so utterly outclassed”. She married Sir John Heathcoat-Amory in 1937, took up gardening at their house in Tiverton (now a National Trust property) with great success, and died in 1997 the day after her 96th birthday. Cornish roots Jessie Edith Borlase was born in Helston Cornwall in 1855. She was the daughter of Henry Borlase a surgeon, and whose father was also a surgeon.
Jessie’s mother Frances died in 1872, and her father two years later, leaving ten children orphans. In 1885, she undertook training as a nurse at Leeds Infirmary. After qualification, she became Matron at Hounslow Cottage Hospital in 1891. Nurse Borlase served through the South African War at the turn of the century as an army nurse, firstly involved with the wounded from the Jameson Raid of 1895/6. She was nursing at the siege of Ladysmith in 1899/1900 where nearly 550 officers and men died from disease. Her actions during that period earned her a mention in dispatches, and also the nickname Ladysmith.. Another incident occurred when she was travelling by rail near Greylingstad also in South Africa. The train was attacked by Boers. Nurse Borlase received two bullets through her dress. She managed to get out of the carriage and was making a run for cover, when the man in front was shot through the thigh, so she had to stop to care for him. The train was ransacked after the occupants surrendered, but Jessie was rescued by troops from a nearby camp. In 1905 she passed her exams to become a qualified midwife.

Life as a war nurse Sister Borlase was known widely as another Florence Nightingale because of her dedication to nursing. She was nearly 60 years old and nursing in Canada when the First World War started, and although she wanted to do her bit, was forbidden from joining up because of her age.
together with her Red Cross armband and medals. The presentation was the proceeds of various events held in London over the previous 12 months, plus individual donations.
Lady Paget who owned a house on Kingston Hill started a hospital in Serbia for wounded soldiers in 1915, and Jessie application to work there was promptly accepted. It was soon after she arrived that typhoid swept the nation, and she quickly became involved in nursing the sick. She was what was known as a “tramp sister” going wherever she was needed, where there was no other doctor or nurse available. Later during the war, she nursed in Flanders, France, the Dardanelles, and Gallipoli. She had also acted as a nurse during the Russian revolution of 1917 at the Anglo Russian Hospital in Petrograd. Many of the major theatres of the war, and she was 63 when the war ended. A Major Burney remembered Jessie when he met her at a field hospital which had been shelled by the Turks. “She took me by the hand, and I noticed a slight tremor. She looked so pathetic and bewildered, so it seemed natural to put my arms around her shoulders to reassure her”. It proved too much for the nurse who had to return home temporarily due to her health.
Two completely different women, leading two very different lives. Both dedicated in their chosen field, and excelled in what they did. They were even famous in their own time, but neither recognised locally. They never met, and probably never thought about each other. The only connection is that one began their life in Malden, and the other ended their life here.
Recognisable in her close cut mannish jacket, she proudly displayed her two South African war ribbons, also Belgian, Serbian, British, and French medals. Died penniless In total Jessie served her country as a fully qualified nurse for over 50 years and on five fronts, but when she died in 1931 aged 76, she was almost penniless having pawned her belongings in order to carry on her work. Death took place at a nursing home in New Malden, probably the Queen Victoria Nursing Institute in Westbury Road (property called Taku). She was buried in Battersea Cemetery in Lower Morden Lane on 2nd December with a donation from the United Services Fund, a charity for ex service personnel. Four people attended the simple service and the coffin was covered by the Union Flag together with her medals.

Charity The Lunchbowl Network by Jenny Stuart
Last month I spent a week with 3 local friends in Nairobi, Kenya, visiting the work of the Lunchbowl Network. Lunchbowl operates in the Kibera Slum with a feeding programme for 500 children, and now also two kindergartens. We have, over the years, raised tens of thousands of pounds – you may remember some of our recent events…? Margaret Quizmas last year (over £13K), Wild Woods in Wimbledon Common Oct 14 (over £2K), funday sunday July 13 (£6,560), Mardi Gras in Beverley park (£3,150).... Thank you!
Njeri
Every 33p we raise in the UK feeds a child in Lunchbowl and we have in the last ten years ensured that all the children in our programme have been fed and cared for. We have now expanded to education, as the key to breaking the cycle of poverty is to prepare these children for a different life. Nobody takes a salary in Lunchbowl and the trip was entirely self-funded by those of us who went so you can rest assured that every donation goes directly to where it’s intended. It was a very varied week, to say the least. It is as difficult to describe the very warm welcome we received at the Angel Kindergarten which is located just on the outskirts of the Kibera slum, as it is to describe the awfulness of the conditions in the slum where the children live. Our family recently sponsored 2 little girls. Margaret will be 3 on 18th April and lives with her single mother and 2 other siblings. The mother does not have regular work and struggles to feed the family every day. They live in a single room in Kibera and share one bed. Like all of the children at the kindergarten they do not have running
12
water or a toilet. The toilets near their shack are padlocked and if they were to use them, they’d have to pay. As such all of the paths and alleys are strewn with bags containing human waste. When children first come to the kindergarten they need to be taught to use the toilets, and not squat in the yard. It really is unimaginable. We visited Margaret at home and the contrast between that environment and the Kindergarten is just massive. Pictured left is a Kibera alley that is Margaret’s walk to school. Angel Kindergartens are an oasis for our children. who really are the poorest of the poor. They are a clean, bright and loving environment which provides a very stimulating learning environment with well qualified, sensitive and experienced Kenyan teachers. We want every child in our Kindergartens to develop emotionally, physically, spiritually and academically this should ensure that the childrens disadvantaged background is compensated and help to set them up heading towards a brighter future; enabling them to compete within the Kenyan system for good Primary and Secondary schools and thereby impact their future lives. If you are interested in sponsoring a child like Margaret for £25 a month please email lunchbowlsponsor@ gmail.com or visit our website www.lunchbowl.org The difference you could make to a young life really is priceless.

Community New Malden Farmers Market is back! After its winter’s break the market is back on the first Saturday of every month at Fountain pub car park in Burlington Road from 9am to 2pm. The not for profit community market run by local volunteers to raise money for charities and good causes has been going from strength to strength which included being featured in Time Out magazine. One of the key aims of the market is to encourage people to shop locally and support local businesses and the High Street. Last year the market had over 5,000 visitors. As result of this it was able to donate £2,000 to various charities. These included the Spartans swimming club for disabled people; Weir Archer Academy, which supports and trains disabled young athletes; Great Ormond Street Hospital; and Yorda Adventures, a local charity providing play projects for children and young people with severe learning disabilities. The market has been attracting new exciting

additions to the number and variety of stalls including a number of local start up businesses. New stalls joined the market featuring local honey, aloe vera products, preserves from locally grown produce, and gluten free sweet and savoury delicacies. This is in addition to the stalwarts of high quality fruit and vegetables; high welfare meat; wonderful range of fresh fish; fantastic bread, sweet and savoury products; cakes; splendid English cheeses; exotic range of olives; pasties and pastries. There has also been a flavoursome range of food to eat or take away including the extremely popular hog roast, Goan and Indian specialities as well as Vietnamese street food. As part of supporting local and start up businesses the market is offering a free 30 minute slot for local businesses who would like the opportunity to showcase their products, skills or services. The same applies to anyone that would like to offer musical or other appropriate entertainment. A variety of entertainment has also been laid on throughout the year with Eddie the busker, Allotment Dave and the wonderful New Malden Ukulele Group putting on a scintillating show at our Christmas market in December. The younger generation were not missed out with a Easter egg painting competition at the market in March and a bouncy castle in summer. Also a major aim of the market is for it to be a focus for community events. As part of this public consultation by Kingston council on the future development of Cocks Crescent and adjoining areas took place in the summer. This drew non-stop queuing by large numbers of people wanting to find out more and get involved. Local councillors also held a workshop in December together with environmental services informing people of the changes to recycling. The community police also joined the market with their popular bike security marking event as well as providing lots of other tips about security and safety. The market also hosts a local charity stall every month free of charge to further promote and support

local charities in New Malden. This included the local heritage society, Barnfield horse riding for the disabled, the London Wildlife Trust and the British Legion. The growth and popularity of the market means that there is a need for more volunteers to help with various tasks on the day and beforehand. No matter how little or much time you have to spare all help would be welcomed. Get in touch via the web site. Anyone interested in having a stall at the market can also check availability via the web site. The market’s ability to continue owes much to the support of the Fountain pub management and their new owners Greene King who provide the use of the car park free of charge. In recognition of this support a donation was made to the pub’s nominated charity the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Dates for the market for 2016 are: 2nd April; 7th May; 4th June; 2nd July; 6th August; 3rd September; 1st October; 5th November; and 3rd December. Education Ofsted is Ancient History - Westbury House School is Outstanding
5 pupils with places to Tiffin, one to Sutton Grammar School, one scholarship to Kingston Grammar School, one scholarship to Lady Eleanor Holles and a scholarship to Putney High School along with a place at Wimbledon High School, one to Epsom College and a place at Coombe Girls’ School is an outstanding set of results for any Year 6 class. However, for the current Year 6 at Westbury House School this is particularly exciting, given the way the school was judged by Ofsted last year; they said that we ‘required improvement’ in a few areas. Improvement has been stunning! We have overhauled the way we teach Maths, incorporating all the latest pedagogy, brought in a Maths consultant and provided bespoke training to ensure staff are fully up-to-date with methods for getting the best out of children. This Year 6 has shown that we’ve found the best in them all. The Management of the School was judged as ‘requiring improvement’; we’ve improved beyond all measure. There is a new Head Teacher, Rosalyn Holiday, who is driving forward a number of new initiatives. She is ably supported 2:Westbury House 16/6/12 Page 1 Head Teacher, Lisa Murray, who is byAd her new13:35 Deputy helping to implement all the changes. September 2016 sees the addition 12:Westbury House Ad 16/6/12 13:35 Pageof 1 two Assistant Heads: one for data U
and one for pastoral issues. This new team will continue to drive the school forwards, making it truly exceptional in every area. The website has been completely changed so that we can keep people informed of the many things that are happening in the school. The programme of extra-curricular activities has been expanded to incorporate a rich variety of opportunities including drama, singing, chess, cookery, computing, films, sport, public speaking, construction, jig-saws, Art, clarinet ensemble, violin ensemble, LAMDA and individual instrument lessons. The already broad curriculum has been further expanded. From September 2016, all Years 3-6 children will have Mandarin lessons on their timetable. This is in addition to French (and Latin from Year 4). They will also have discreet lessons in Design Technology in addition to Art. We are moving ICT forwards to have individual tablets for children to work with in a range of lessons, turning from the old-fashioned notion of a dedicated ‘computer room’ to a school where computers are integral to each classroom in the school. The Science curriculum has been modernised to include many exciting projects. This year sees the first Arts Week, the first Science Week, the first inter-House music competition, the first public speaking competition, the first poetry competition. Ofsted and its judgement of Westbury House is definitely ancient history! There is a new standard at Westbury House - nothing less than outstanding.

Charity Survivors of Ebola in Uganda: can you help? by Dick and Chloe Waller Ebola has been much in the news because of the recent outbreaks in West Africa where 28,000 people have been infected and over 11,000 have died. The 2000/2001 outbreak in Northern Uganda was much smaller but very relevant to us. Some readers may remember an appeal made to Christ Church in late December 2000 from Gulu, at the centre of the affected region. The families of people who contracted Ebola lost their homes, all their chattels and clothing in precautions against cross-infection. Other people feared contact with them and local sources of replacements were not trusted, so we were asked to get together whatever we could send. Over 80 boxes of clothes, shoes, blankets etc. reached Gulu early in February 2001 to be quickly and efficiently distributed. The survivors of Ebola were given 2 – 3 years. Together with the dependents of those who died, they numbered about 1500, their plight worsened by the regional civil war then at its height. During the civil war 40 internal displacement camps were set up containing over 400,000 closely-packed people. As the war ended they were relocated to their home villages, so that many of the survivors are in remote locations. They have defied the early prognosis but lack the strength and endurance to provide for themselves and escape poverty. We visited Gulu last November and met Walter Odong, one of those infected who have survived. In 2001 he and others founded a local charity for the survivors, the children orphaned, the widows and the widowers. After 15 years he still suffers skeletal pains, vision problems, lethargy and severe headaches, but remembers warmly the aid we sent and is very eager to thank all of you who helped in 2001. Walter has been unable to hold a steady job but, as one of the few with education, has continued working hard for fellow-sufferers. Meanwhile outside help has dwindled and a few hundred remain very stressed. We were impressed by what has been achieved and

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart It has often been said that we are living in the ‘knowledge society’ where we all have access to stupendous amounts of information. I certainly can’t argue with that, as, in fact, I often find myself in information overload with far too much to remember and process in my tired brain. However, there are key areas though where it seems we have a distinct lack of knowledge, one of which being our personal finances. Therefore, we decided to commission some research to see just how much people knew (or didn’t know) about their future financial needs. Firstly, we started by asking how much an individual thought that they would need as an annual income in retirement. The answer came back as £23,400, which seemed quite modest to me, but we can presume that by that stage all the mortgage payments and major financial commitments should have been finished. Therefore taking the maximum state pension at being just over £6,000 that would still leave a further £17,400 of income to be found each year. Now if you had to go out and purchase that income by way of an annuity, that would cost you in the region of £348,000, or put another way that is how much you would have to have in your pension savings! A nasty shock for any of us. In fact when asked the question, just how much people would need in their pension pot, a staggering 82% did not know. Well I say staggering but in fact it is not, as no-one teaches us these numbers. Why this has not been in the curriculum at schools for years is astonishing to me. I would have it not as a separate subject of personal finance but rather make it part of a practical mathematics programme. Finally, it is now going into the national curriculum, but still at a basic level and far too late for the majority of us. We also asked some further questions around the amount people were saving. It became apparent that only one in six said they had enough put aside and roughly the same proportion had no idea how much they had. To make it worse three out of ten were not saving at all, and likely waiting for that almost ‘dead cert’ of winning the National Lottery. Oh dear. So what is to be done? Well, education I have mentioned but that is rather an afterthought for most of us. Time then to bring in the technology. Now the fashionable and trendy term in the finance world for technology are ‘FinTech’ which seems to cover anything in finance with an electrical pulse in it, and then ‘Robo-advice’ which appears to imply a level of automated advice to citizens from a machine governed by a range of algorithms. These are at an early stage, and whilst developments will make this easier in time to come, there are many other ways in which technology can be applied to provide us all with a better idea of what we need to do. One of the areas that we have been working on in this area
24
has been 7IMagine which, those of our clients who use it, will know that it is a really clear and simple way of looking at your investments and how they have done against the benchmarks that you have set. This was developed by games software writers who were, and still are, clients of ours. They applied the style, logic and yes even entertainment of games style software to something which is usually extremely dull - financial reporting - and made it engaging. From reporting what clients and their families have, we have taken this a stage further. Now it is time to look forward. The idea is very simple. Why not use the same games style software to try and interpret your financial position in the future - not just for you but for your family as well. As we know from the research very few people know what they will actually need. Furthermore, they rarely consider that the funding for the lifespan may well have to cover a longer period than they were actually working. Centenarians are already quite common, and as we all get closer to those more mature days, so the average lifespan will be longer. Thus anything that can tell us as early as possible what shortfall we might have, has to be vital help for all of us. All too often I have come across people approaching retirement with a sense of dread, knowing that they probably don’t have enough, but thoroughly confused because no-one told them what they should do. After all, the politicians have meddled with savings and pensions for years. The state is in retreat when it comes to further provision, and especially around old age care. So it will be down to us. Therefore we have launched a new part of 7IMagine called somewhat obviously “My Future”, which as the name suggests calculates your future financial issues taking into account not just your assets, but also your family, your tax wrappers and other issues, as well as all those tiresome family events (marriage, births & deaths etc.) that happen to us all over our lifetime. It even includes our end of life - setting your expected lifespan and then immediately calculating your anticipated position be it positive or negative. If it is negative then the earlier you find out the better so that you can do something about it. Why not give it a try - it’s freely available in the Apple and Google App stores. So why not download it to your iPad or tablet device and have a play around with it. When you have done, do let me know what you think and how we can improve on it. I wish someone had given me that when I was 18! Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

MASTERING YOUR MONEY by Dominic Thomas There’s a lot of jargon in finance. Most of which is totally unhelpful. When you think about it, a really good financial plan can be summarised as making sure you don’t run out of money. Making you rich or achieving returns of x% a year are frankly pointless if you run out of cash. So any decent plan never starts with financial products. It always starts with what is important to you. What are your hopes, dreams and goals – big and small. Some of these may have absolutely nothing to do with the size of your pension. The best place to begin is with the present, which means understanding what you have already...
FREE REPORT THE FIVE MOST COMMON MISTAKES INVESTORS MAKE
What have you got? Where does it go? And why? Are those things actually important to you? What, if anything do you expect will change when you decide you’ve had enough of working? So what income do you actually need to live on? (In today’s costs) A financial plan will help identify the gaps and what you can do about them. It’s a bit like taking a look into the future and deciding if you like it enough, if not, you may need to change some things around. In short, your financial plan is about you, not investments, not products, not tax, but you. Those things are just the tools to help get you there, nothing more. Paint Now! Picasso said it took a lifetime to paint like a child. I think that if children paint regularly in a supportive environment, they will experience a joy and creative confidence that they won’t forget. I find the painting process beautiful. I’m currently painting instinctive abstract paintings: I set up my my colours and wait for one to attract me, then when I am finished with it I wait for the next, and so on, until the painting feels finished. I express what I feel in that moment. There are of course moments of ‘it’s not working’, and when that happens I take a break, have a cup of tea, go back to it fresh. It teaches you to have the patience and confidence to explore creatively and that (for example, when everything falls into place seamlessly with minimal effort) you really can create your own joy. I’ve always loved art but I didn’t pursue it at school. I have vague memories of painting fruit and making lots (and lots) of coil pots. I was quite good at copying, but it was tedious. Then, waiting for a job to start (in law), I did a painting course on a whim. The teacher said there were ‘no mistakes’ and just ‘follow your instinct’. It was magical: I had the freedom to create whatever
I wanted, and someone who thought I was good at it standing there, cheering me on! I want to show my students that they have absolute freedom to express themselves in paint/collage/ pencil and to assure them that what they create will be beautiful and unique. I’ve seen in my art/creative writing lessons that this takes quite a lot of convincing; endless exams teach us that there is a ‘right’ and a ‘wrong’ and that we want to be right. But, when the message gets through, I’ve also seen that it does wonders for self-esteem and confidence, and brings so much joy. That’s why it’s important to start early!

Gardening Go On, Grow Your Own! Pippa Greenwood
Enjoying a delicious meal which includes some home grown ingredients is a wonderful feeling – it fills you full of just the right sort of pride (and maybe even a little bit of smugness!). It simply feels good to indulge in a bit of Grow Your Own and then reap the rewards. You may well have been sowing and potting on vegetables for a while now, but if you’re behind schedule or haven’t produced vegetables before, don’t panic – there’s still time to grow just about any crop in your plot this year. Most plants can be raised from seed now, but there are a few that are likely to give a much better yield with an earlier start. Instead, buy in plants of crops such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, melons and aubergines over the next month or so. Some vegetables can be directly sown now into well-prepared garden soil in a suitable spot in all but the coolest gardens – beetroot, lettuce, beans, peas, carrots, rocket, spinach to name but a few. Slightly more tender crops such as sweetcorn, squash and courgettes fare better if given a bit of extra heat when you are germinating the seeds, which is where an electrically heated propagator really comes into its own. The seedlings may then need pricking out and potting on until they are sturdy enough to live in the great outdoors, but try to ‘harden off’ the young plants before placing them into their final positions as they may be damaged by cold, wind or rain. Put the young plants outside on warm days once the weather has stabilised, and bring them back under cover at night. Leave them outside after a week or so, covering them with fleece at night to let them acclimatise.
well-watered during drier weather and apply feed at regular intervals, you will soon be harvesting crops such as climbing French and runner beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, sugar-snap peas, peppers, chillies, onions, melons, butternut squash, beetroot and courgettes. Most vegetables need a good fertile soil and a sunny or partly shaded spot, so choose your growing area with care. If space is limited, don’t worry – most vegetables will do well in good sized containers (minimum 30cm x 30cm x 30cm) with good-quality compost, though bigger pots will need less frequent watering. But, whether you plant and sow vegetables in pots, tubs, greenhouses or open ground, the end result will be gorgeous tasting, super-fresh vegetables. So go on, get growing! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa (don’t forget your offer code 12419-E7SPS for a £4 discount), Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.
To save time, you can buy in small plants and you will get a good range from seed merchants or garden centres, but if you would like advice from me to when you quote vv03sx ensure great results, don’t forget that you can still order garden-ready plants, accompanied by weekly For new clients advice and tips emails specific to the vegetables JD Hair Designs is situated on South Lane Parade you’ve chosen to grow. Hobbies Bridge – a game for life even if it’s not a sport! ‘Bridge is the most entertaining and intelligent card game the wit of man has so far devised’ - So said Somerset Maugham, and he was right! Bridge is played by millions around the world – some names you might recognise include James Bond, Martina Navratilova, Radiohead, Warren Buffet, the late Omar Sharif and Bill Gates - even Snoopy the Dog... Bridge offers you the wonderful combination of a mentally stimulating challenge in a social environment, a game that you can continue to improve at forever. It is easy to learn and endlessly fascinating. All you need to play this great game are a table, a deck of cards and two partnerships of two, one playing as North-South and the other as East-West. Many play in clubs and/or at home but you’ll find bridge players in all sorts of places – allotment clubs, church halls, U3a, pubs, workplaces at lunchtime, tennis clubs, golf clubs and more... Bridge is for anyone and everyone from 9 – 100. You can take it up at any age and while life sometimes gets in the way, most players return enthusiastically. If you are thinking about what is the best way to occupy any spare leisure time, then why not enrol in a term of lessons? Lessons at a club are a great way to start. Wimbledon Bridge Club has a full programme of lessons and sessions with times to suit everyone, from beginner to expert, social and competitive. You can learn with a friend but most people begin on their own. By the end of term one you will be hooked! By then, you will be bidding a playing in class and able to enjoy playing a social game with friends. Sometime during the second term you will be able to start coming to other sessions too, so that you can practice your 50
newfound skills and get help from experienced teachers. Bridge is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest mind sports. Unfortunately, it is not recognised as a sport by Sport England. Many top players would argue that playing Bridge competitively is as or more exhausting than many sports. WBC has excellent transport links and free parking in the evening. Our membership extends into London, New Malden, Kingston, Worcester Park, and Sutton and out into Surrey via the A3.

New Malden Matters New Malden Residents’ Association On 18th March, New Malden Residents’ Association hosted a well-attended meeting at which local residents were able to raise points of concern with the MP for Kingston and Surbiton, James Berry. Several councillors for wards within KT3 also attended. Five questions were sent to his office beforehand, on air quality, Crossrail 2, affordable housing, the high street, and high council tax in Kingston; these topics were chosen as they are within the remit of an MP. In addition, topical questions were raised, triggered by the recent budget, on how the council could exercise its duty to educate when all schools were to be removed from its control, and on why James Berry had voted for the removal of the Employment Support Allowance from disabled job seekers. Lastly, a question was raised on why we not consulted on the size of the infamous blue- top recycling bins. Air quality was the focus of the January New Malden Matters, and features in the election material of the four main mayoral candidates. James Berry has written to

TfL to find out the air quality readings for New Malden, and the council is commissioning two permanent air quality reading sites in Kingston, and advice on remediation from experts at King’s College London. A switch from private to public transport is part of the solution, although there is little that can be done about the A3; one audience member had been appalled by an application to open a nursery in St James Close, adjacent to the traffic fumes of the A3 roundabout. James Berry also stated his opposition to the expansion of Heathrow, and reminded the audience that there was a proposed flight path directly over New Malden. The go-ahead for Crossrail 2 was announced in the budget, and James Berry agreed to hold a meeting in the autumn in New Malden when more detailed plans are available, particularly in relation to New Malden station, and the replacement of the level crossings. Increased train capacity to a destination other than Waterloo (i.e. Victoria) is urgently needed, since an additional 20% is already required but is limited by the bottleneck of lines into the terminus. Electronic signalling will also be introduced by TfL when the suburban lines come under its control from 2017 onwards, creating more capacity to accommodate trains, although a concern was raised about the noise from increased numbers of nonstopping trains. James Berry stated that he would object to the over-development of New Malden, a potential consequence of our status as an important transport hub. In relation to affordable housing, James Berry focussed on buying, but not the need for secure, affordable tenancies. He noted that both the leading mayoral candidates want to build on TfL owned land, but RBK owns little land on which it can build and therefore has to rely on developers, whose affordability assessments are not currently made available to local planners to have their assumptions tested. He also stated that objectors also delay developments. An audience member pointed out that the recent government requirement for Housing Associations to reduce rents by 1% has put severe financial strain on a local provider. In relation to the high street, James Berry identified from canvassing last year that parking and business rates were the key issues for shopkeepers. The former has been addressed locally by limited free parking; business rates were frozen by the last government and have been adjusted in the recent budget. It is not clear what can be done to attract shops other than estate agents and restaurants, of which we already have many, and betting shops (too many). In relation to traffic congestion, there will be a consultation in the summer on the reconfiguration of the Fountain roundabout. RBK has the second highest council tax in London, after Richmond. James Berry responded that there were several reasons why other boroughs had lower levels; for example, Westminster can raise income from enormous business rates, and Wandsworth has many more properties in the highest tax band. Kingston is

also the second smallest borough in London, so has disproportionately high overheads. Both the council and James Berry are enthusiastic to pilot the retention of business rates and the abolition of the central government grant, as a better option for Kingston. E x B r i t i s h G a s E n g i n e e r There was some discussion of setting a local rate at a 2 6 Y e a r s E x p e r i e n c e level which would not drive businesses away, and an interesting proposal from an audience member that local New Condensing boiler taxation should cover local infrastructure, but that social care should be funded by central government to prevent fitted from the postcode lottery. Recipe Pork Jambalaya Cooked in just one pan and on the table in less than an hour this is a great midweek family supper. Serve with garlic bread or a mixed green salad, if liked. Serves 4 Ready in 55 minutes 1 tbsp groundnut oil 100g chorizo sausage, sliced 350g pork loin steaks, cut into chunks 1 onion, peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika, plus extra for sprinkling 2 tsp Cajun seasoning 225g easy-cook long grain rice 700ml vegetable stock 100g fine green beans, chopped 1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and diced
Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo over a high heat until golden and the fat starts to run. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Add the diced pork to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time until browned. Remove and set aside with the chorizo. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Stir in the spices and rice and cook, stirring, over a medium heat for 2 minutes then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return the pork to the pan and cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chorizo, green beans and yellow pepper into the pan and cook, uncovered, for a further 6-7 minutes until the rice and vegetables are tender, adding a little more stock if necessary. Serve sprinkled with a little more smoked paprika and freshly ground black pepper. TIP You can replace the pork in this recipe with diced chicken breast fillet or boneless thigh fillets. Alternatively use large raw king prawns and add them to the pan in step 4 and cook until pink.

A Photographer Dreams April by Hugh Griffiths www.creativelight.org.uk I’m going to take a risk this month … my first picture is completely abstract with shades of blue running across the photo. I reckon that it’s a bit of a marmite picture- you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. I love it! point, I reckon it thought that I was a possible source of bread crumbs and came closer, looking at me. The lack of any wind meant that the water was flat, giving decent reflections; and that the slight movement of the bird created those circles around it. Those help to make the picture interesting – and the colour and sharpness of the bird make it a success. I took about 20 pictures of this bird and its mate, but this was the best. The head to one side, ensuring that you get the full face, the eye with a light in it, the ripples gently moving around it – they all add to the impact. None of them could be taken out of the picture without losing the interest. This picture is on the wall of a friend – so someone likes it! It isn’t at all obvious what the picture is of – but I promise you that it is based very strongly on a specific scene. I was looking out to sea, there was a little bit of cloud, but mostly blue sky. And that is what I put into the camera. The scene as it was recorded was nice, but needed a little bit of cleaning up of a few spots that looked out of place. I was playing around in Adobe Lightroom trying to sharpen the picture, but then tried the opposite – completely softening it (using the Clarity slider for Adobe experts). This was the result – a picture that could be a painting. For me, the lesson was that you can make a beautiful image even if it is not clearly a record of what was in the original. Its always worth experimenting with your Adobe editing tools. By the way – that line through the centre of the picture is the horizon. My second picture was taken at Claremont Gardens in April last year. Very probably, I could probably have taken this photo at any other time of the year but what I needed was some time to wait (so it had to be a reasonably good weather day!), a clear sky and no breeze. And the red-crested pochard of course. Sitting on the lawn by the lake, with my long lens on the camera, I followed this bird as it swam around. At this

I want to emphasise the benefit of ‘just sitting and looking’. Most of us, go out with our cameras and take pictures of what we see and what interests us … I do. But two things can really put a snap (pun deliberate!) into your pictures. The first is stopping and just looking at the scene for a period of time. In my experience the longer you do that, the more pictures you see that could be good. Carrying heavy camera equipment is a real help to encourage this sort of rest! The other thing is to have people criticise your pictures and challenging you to be better at composition. My pictures have really got enormously better over the past few years – thank you to the judges and members at the Malden Camera Club for the constructive criticism you have given me!

Organisations Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch
We have been busy at the Malden and Coombe branch planning for a tea party on Sunday 12th June to commemorate our patron HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday. It will coincide with a thank you to our Poppy Appeal volunteers for their hard work over the years. We would also like to welcome any New Malden resident who is interested in volunteering or who just fancies a slice of cake and a cup of tea. More details to follow in the May edition of the Village Voice. We are very sad to report that one of our long standing members John Fairclough passed away in February. John and wife June have been stalwarts of the local Poppy Appeal for over 10 years and it is estimated they have helped raise around a quarter of million pounds. It was a tribute to John’s popularity that many attended his funeral to pay their respects. Malden and Coombe branch members will always remember John fondly and thank him for

In 2008 a new plaque on the New Malden Memorial was dedicated to Lieutenant Humphrey O.B. Firman who, at the age of 29 in the service of the Royal Navy, was killed during World War 1 by Turkish forces. Lt. Firman was awarded the VC posthumously for his part in an attempt at a heroic night time resupply mission to troops in the Middle East in 1916. This year we will lay a wreath at the Memorial on 24th April to mark the centenary of Lt. Firman’s death.

Golden Years Memories of 50 years ago
The cleverest inventions often fail at what they’re intended to do but then go on to succeed brilliantly elsewhere. I could write a list, but seeing that 6th April 1966 is perhaps the most significant date in its history, let’s focus on one outstanding example: the hovercraft. We tend to think of the hovercraft as a product of our own age, and indeed it is; but the advantages of minimizing or even eliminating contact between hull and water have long been obvious. The first patent in hovercraft design was taken out by John Thornycroft (as in Vosper Thornycroft) way back in 1877 - but his was the age of steam, and no suitable engine existed. Once petrol engines were available, designers became interested in contactless or reduced-contact motorboats again - but now their inspiration was aviation technology, and between 1915 and 1940 prototypes of various stepped-hull and hydroplane coastal craft were built in Austro-Hungary, Finland, the USSR, the USA amongst others. World War II put a stop to these developments, but in the 1950s a Norfolk boatbuilder, Christopher Cockerell, decided to revisit Thorneycroft’s patent. Light but powerful engines were plentiful, and Cockerell was also able to design a way of swirling the air cushion on which his hovercraft would ride that made it more efficient still. At last, a craft that would rise clear out of the water! Cockerell’s design won the support of the National Research Development Council, which licensed his 1955 patent to a number of builders including Saunders-Roe; and on 11th June 1959 the four-seater 28mph SR-N1 (Saunders Roe Nautical 1) was launched. The craft was then shipped to Calais and on 25th July made the first Channel crossing by hovercraft. It wasn’t the first into service, though – that honour went to the rival Vickers-Armstrong 3, which started a scheduled ferry service across the Dee between Rhyl and Wallasey in July and August 1962. The second, launched in the same year, used a new Saunders-Roe hovercraft, SR-N2, to cross the Solent between Ryde and Southsea – a service that still runs today, albeit with rather more modern craft!
and more popular, and Dover and Folkestone were at full stretch. So, on that April day 50 years ago, the 38-seater SR-N6 raised itself up on its rubber skirt (an improvement designed not by Cockerell but by a naval officer called Latimer-Needham), trundled down the Ramsgate beach that would be the service’s home for the next 16 years, and set off on the 40-minute, 35-mile journey to Calais. Connecting coaches would take passengers on to Paris for £3.7s.6d or Brussels for £2.7s.6d. Cheaper and faster they might be, but cross-Channel hovercraft never really challenged the ferry’s supremacy. Like the British airliners, the Trident and the VC-10, there wasn’t enough demand for them to justify a permanent production line: the later models even had to cannibalise each other for spare parts. The oil crisis of the early ‘70s made them less competitive; the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 proved a fatal blow. The last two were retired in September 2000, just a year after the death of their inventor. Hovercraft are, of course, still in use around the world as coastal search and rescue vessels, as military transport and assault craft, as buses using frozen Alaskan rivers in winter, although they’ve never eclipsed conventional vessels as was once hoped. But the field in which they have proved most successful is one that Cockerell probably never expected: gardening. For in 1964 a Swedish engineer, Karl Dahlman, saw an early hovercraft in action...and invented the Flymo.
