A personal highlight of 2019 for me was visiting projects run by the Lunchbowl Network in Nairobi, Kenya. Having also made the trip in 2017 it was so uplifting and emotional to see the difference 2 years had made. Lunchbowl is mainly funded by UK sponsors and fundraisers - everyone who helps is a volunteer and we are incredibly proud to be able to say that 97.5p of every £ raised goes directly to where it is needed. If you are looking for a virtual gift for a friend, relative or even yourself then I can promise you, your donation will make a huge difference. www.lunchbowl.org Thank you! I hope you enjoy a good read please make sure you see what our local businesses and advertisers have to offer- i’m delighted to say we have quite a few new ones this month. Fundraising So Lets Talk Christmas Trees! We have Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, to thank for the tradition of Christmas Trees during the festive season. With the original “Norway Spruce” being replaced by the Nordman inthe 1980s as they are not prone to needles dropping in centrally heated houses. To achieve this the trees must be harvested, rested, then netted and shipped. Even so about 1 in 1500 disobeys and will shed every needle pronto. We can normally spot these before they go on sale and remove them. SFRA (The Schools/Scout Fund Raising Association) is a group of locals who get together every year, to supply fresh trees direct from the farm for school PTAS and Scouts to sell to raise money for their respective interests. We pride ourselves in delivering only ‘GRADE 1’ fresh trees.

What is even better is, as the SFRA is a “NOT FOR PROFIT” organisation, the trees are up to a third of the price of local suppliers. Our prices have NOT increased for 4 years. Not only do you get a bargain, you support local schools etc. With the funds going direct to where necessary not being whittled away paying various distribution/ collecting / “administration” costs. When you get your tree it will fill the room with the wonderful smell of PINE, but to get the maximum benefit always top up the tree stand with water everyday!

New Malden History Is it a bird, is it a plane? by Robin Gill Presburg Road The special architectural and historic interest of Presburg Road can be summarised as: A small group of Queen Anne Revival style houses built between 1901–1908 by Vincent Davison, an active local surveyor. Twenty-nine properties were designated as part of a conservation area in 1989. This area of New Malden originally formed part of Norbiton Common but by the mid-19th century it had been completely enclosed as farmland. The land was used exclusively for agricultural use until the 1860s when the London and Suburban Land Company laid out Presburg Road, Westbury Road and Thetford Road. Progress in the development of the area as a residential neighbourhood was slow and by 1899 only 15 houses were built in this conservation area. Presburg Road was the last area to be developed, before the outbreak of the first World War put a temporary stop to domestic building activity. Presburg Road conservation area takes in the best of this pre-war development which has a distinctive character and appearance of its own. The 20 houses identified are all of the “Queen Anne” or “Renaissance” style which was used extensively during this period for both domestic and prestigious public buildings. Vincent Davison who built these houses worked extensively in the New Malden area. Characteristic of his work are the fine jointed red brick aprons under the windows and the rubbed brick arches to door and window openings. Greater use is made of reconstituted stone dressings and patterned render on the west side of the street. Although Davison seems to have made extensive use of pattern books and standard details for his designs, the buildings are well composed with good proportions. The high standard of design and mature gardens add to the visual amenity of the area. Thomas Vincent Herbert Davison the council surveyor and architect of these buildings also doubled as the chief fire officer of the Maldens and Coombe Fire Brigade which an organisation set up in 1895 manned by volunteers with the exception of Davison being appointed by the local board. He also designed the original fountain which stood at the junction of Malden Road and Kingston Road. His family was also

involved in the development of the first cinema in Malden in Coombe Road. Mild mannered family In the late 1960s through to the early 80s at number 19a lived an elderly couple Kathleen Maria and William (Willie) Bolingbroke Home-Gall who were married over 50 years. Kathleen died in 1972, but Willie carried on living in Presburg Road for another decade until his death in 1982 aged 85. His father also called William was originally born in Hong Kong, but returned to England as a child when his father drowned at sea. Settled into a farming life in Suffolk, William (Snr) bought his own farm with money from his new wife who he married in 1889. By April the following year he was declared bankrupt, and the farm sold due the insistence of his wife that he repay her loan. The couple separated and William went to live in Charlton where William (jnr) was born (1894), and then to Hampton where another child Edward was conceived (1897). It was only then the couple decided to marry (1898), although the divorce from his first wife was only absolute in 1903 five years later. William (snr) started writing stories for boys around this time (as Reginald Wray) tales such as the Schoolboy Acrobats and the Schoolboy Ventriloquist started

appearing in comics like The Boys’ Friend, he also wrote as Reginald Drew about the adventures of the Towley Triplets, and he also started producing tales under his own name writing until just before his death in 1933. He was the first scout master in Hampton, with both his boys in the troop. Naturally, his talent for stories inspired his children notably Edward who while writing as Rupert Hall specialised in flying stories, spy stories as Edwin Dale, and even writing from a female point of view as Judith Dale stories about Shirley Flight; Air Hostess in 1950s/60s, before delving into science fiction with stories about The Human Bat. William (jnr) on the other hand was more into editing and publishing although he did write a few stories either under his own name of just William Bolingbroke or Will Young/Home Goal/Bash Kenny/Martin Mowbray/Steve Sunderland mostly about Football Teams. Man of tomorrow His claim to fame is that he was the publisher of

Triumph comics under Amalgamated Press and responsible for issue 772 on August 5th 1939 which saw the first appearance of Superman outside of the USA, but because of the advent of World War Two, and the shortage of paper, the serial only lasted a few weeks. Accordingly, copies of these few papers have been known to change hands for large amounts. This appearance was only 11 months after he first appeared in USA, and for the first time relates his origin and shows him flying. (important for comic enthusiasts.). American comics were becoming popular in Britain, but the acquisition of Superman showed no significant increase in sales for Triumph during his short showing. William wrote his first story aged eight about a bluebottle and a light bulb which was published in a comic called Playtime. He joined the Amalgamated Press as an apprentice at the age of 18 in 1912 at a wage of 12/6 (62 ½ pence) a week. Contributors were paid a certain amount per story that was accepted. The more stories accepted the more chance of working from home. Pseudonyms were adopted because editors didn’t want their readers to feel they had few

Clubs Rotary Club Of New Malden As readers will recall, November began with the Remembrance Ceremony in the High Street. Our President together with the President of Inner Wheel laid wreaths. It was a well attended event. Following this was our Race Night event in aid of End Polio Now, which is one of our main charity events. The next was the big switch on of the Christmas lights in the High Street . The switch on announces our door-to-door mobile in New Malden and static on Saturdays in the High Street. If you get a knock on the door and hear the carols being played please give generously if you can. You will be advised how we spend your donations in due course. Some further donations have been made from our funds as follows;- continuing on from the resounding success of the combined schools concert last summer, the Youth Services Committee invited the schools to put forward to us any worthy causes for possible support. Coombe Girls’ School holds a House Music Competition each year in the Spring Term, using high quality lighting and sound techniques. This equipment requires funds. support of the excellent musical talents of local young people. We wish good luck to all the participants. AND Richard Challoner School, where they take their senior choir on a European tour in the summer. The club has donated funds to support one young man to participate. We wish the tour every success. What a fantastic opportunity for these youngsters! Regarding the Christmas lights, a check has taken place on their functionality and it was discovered that ten lamps and three catenaries were not working. It has taken many telephone calls and prompts to, hopefully, get them glowing brightly. If you attended the big switch on you will have seen whether or not this has happened. Members of New Malden Rotary Club wish a very happy Christmas to all our readers and supporters.. David Powers - Club correspondent.

Fundraising A long commute home Anyone who takes the train from New Malden might have seen adverts for “The Clipper Race” which have popped up along the platform recently. While waiting for the early morning train, there they are, daring us to do something out of the ordinary, to challenge ourselves to apply for the toughest endurance race on the planet – sailing a stripped-down Ocean racing yacht across the world’s most inhospitable and isolated environments. “No experience required”. The Clipper race was started by Sir Robin KnoxJohnston who, in 1969, was the first person to solo circumnavigate the world by boat. The race consists of 11 identical boats, each crewed by around 20people, from all over the world, who race around the globe, stopping only briefly at ports to re-stock, repair and prepare the next leg. It takes ‘ordinary’ people - non-sailors - from all walks of life and trains them to become fully fledged ocean racers – the race is tough and the crew must be self-sufficient, look after each other and be capable of working as a team, living for weeks on end in the confines of a 70foot racing yacht – it is mentally, physically and emotionally challenging. It took several years before I considered applying. I have never sailed and the idea of taking the best part of a year out, leaving family and friends behind to do something like this seemed impossible – but the ‘dream’ of taking on and witnessing nature in its rawest form was there. Finally, I applied last year and was offered a place on the 2019/20 race. Since then my life has been intensely full – it’s not just learning how to sail, but also boat safety, survival skills, sail-making and even how to cook for 22people, on a yacht heeled over at 45degrees and haring along at breakneck speed! Now though, the training is over. In January, I will fly to Australia to climb aboard my team’s yacht, “GotoBermuda” before racing back to the UK, crossing the Pacific and the Atlantic. 25,000miles, 9 port stops and 7months later, I will arrive back in London in August 2020. I face it with apprehension and anticipation in equal measure. Truly the race of my life.

16

The last year taught me that to achieve our dreams, we rely heavily on others to support us. I am very lucky in this regard, but sadly, this is not true for everyone. Therefore, my team and I are racing in support of Unicef’s “Child friendly cities programme” which gives children in urban areas the infrastructure they need to believe in themselves and supports them to make their ambitions come true. We aim to raise £20k for this important programme and you can support by donating to my Just giving page: www.justgiving.com/Andrew’s complete life venture. For a minimum donation to UNICEF, Local businesses can also become my official Race Crew Supporters - in return, I will carry their logo on my race gear and mention them on my blog. They will be able to use the Clipper logo in their own communications – for further information, please contact me Andrewcowenatwork@outlook.com. Community spirit and neighbourliness make New Malden a special to live so it will mean a lot to me to feel that support as I race around the world. Please come and see this festive forest in both daylight and in the dark (on the Saturday afternoon 14th December) when the twinkling lights create a magical display.

Sheep Trail Sheep lost in New Malden. Can ewe help find them? Around 40 sheep have gone astray in the High Street and we need young detectives to seek them out and record their whereabouts. The (knitted) sheep come in a variety of styles and sizes (they are ewenique) but all are believed to be hiding in premises in and around the High Street. They might be in the window or you may have to search further. Each sheep has a name tag around its neck so you have to enter their names on the entry form.

Opening Times: Saturday 15th December 10am – 4.30pm Weekdays from 16th December until Christmas Eve 10am – 2pm, when Wesley’s is open Saturday 21st December 10am – 2pm (including Community Carols at 11.30) New Malden Methodist Church is right on the High Street and our coffee bar, Wesley’s, is open to all 10am until 12pm on Saturdays (opening later during the Christmas Tree Festival) and 10am-2pm on weekdays so why not have a break from Christmas shopping, stop for a coffee and a biscuit and take a look at the trees?

Please collect an entry form from the Methodist Church (opposite Waitrose) from Friday 29th November at the church Christmas fair and after that on any weekday between 10am and 2pm and start noting down names of sheep. The sheep will be in the shops until Thursday 19th December and then return to the fold for the Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 5pm. Please return your finished form to the church at that service or on Saturday 21st December 10am-2pm during our Christmas Tree Festival. All completed forms will receive a small prize. Thank ewe for helping find our sheep. Christmas tree festival The ever popular Christmas Tree Festival returns to New Malden Methodist Church starting on Saturday 14th December. Around 24 local organisations will be showing their artistic flair by decorating trees for their favourite charities. Last year saw entries from a host of local organisations including Scouts, Guides, Brownies, the Malden Fortnight Committee, Rotary, Princess Alice Hospice, Groves Residential, Corpus Christi School and various church groups. A more sustainable me

The one with priceless Christmas gift ideas that won’t break the bank by Ali Warner The TV ads are out, Ikea’s pushing a living room refurb, John Lewis has a cute dragon that has spawned its own chocolate range. Its time to hit the shops or is it? I recently got help decluttering my kitchen. It which was full of stuff that I just couldn’t see past. Do I really want to celebrate a season by replacing stuff I threw out with other stuff? That’s not to say I don’t want to give my loved one gifts that are precious, or that I’m going to be a humbug about gifts I receive. But perhaps there’s a way to show people we love them that doesn’t necessarily create a crazy pile up under a tree. Maybe we give people something a lot of us feel we don’t have enough of. Maybe we give each other time? That’s a hard one right? But here’s something to think about. One in 10 of us admits to checking our smartphones every ten minutes, we spend an average of 142 minutes each day on social. How much of it could be said to be time well spent? So here’s where the craziness of the festive season can come in useful. Save some of the time you spend buying gifts in shops or online and use it to gift a shared experience, maybe even one that helps out a local business? Sounds like a stretch? Here are 7 gift options that may just create memories and won’t need to be returned on Boxing Day. 1: Download Couch to 5K for you and a friend Wish you could catch up more often? Here’s a good reason to catch up one day a week. A shared goal, the chance to chat and get fit without the cost of gym membership. What’s not to love?

with great meat and veg and cakes and local honey. Bypass the supermarket plastic and reduce your food’s carbon footprint by offering a catch up meal with friends as an alternative Christmas pressie. You could even use that new cookery book you got for Christmas. 4: Find out more about what’s around you On the first Sunday of every month from October to March at 11pm there’s a free local Kingston Walk that starts at the doors of the Market House below the Golden Queen. Or freestyle a walk along the river and finish with a coffee and a cake at Ginger Bees cafe on Portsmouth Road. They’ve got Lemon Drizzle and it’s a good one. 5: Give your mates a date night Sometimes the hassle of finding a babysitter can be the difference between seeing the latest release on the big screen and waiting for it to hit Netflix. Design a voucher, suggest a few dates and give a couple a kid-free evening. 6: Support local talent If you were wearing legwarmers at the last gig you saw - it’s time for a catchup. Good news is you don’t have go to O2 or Wembley to enjoy some big hitters. Banquet Records is an independent record shop gem that offers live gigs at local Kingston venues. This year saw the likes of The Script, Mark Ronson, Snow Patrol and Elbow do taster gigs for under £20, just keep an eye on their website - tickets go fast. If comedy is more your thing - check Out of The Box’s gig list at The Royal Oak which has seen the likes of Jack Dee and Al Murray test out new material in the room upstairs.

2: Try a craft taster at the Malden Centre Committing to an evening class might not be your bag - but what about £10 taster. There’s a Pottery Taster on Thursday 2 Jan from 7pm-9.30pm. Seriously just think of the fun Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze had in Ghost, and Patrick wasn’t even breathing.

7: Take the plunge Take a loved one to swim under the stars at The Hampton Court Lido’s moonlight swim which is held as close to the month’s full moon as possible. The swim runs from 22:00 to midnight and costs £8.50 per adult in advance (higher on the night). The next one is 3 Jan, not a bad way to get rid of the hangover.

3: Make a meal for mates with local produce We’re lucky enough to have a monthly farmers market

Give time this Christmas Time, just think of the sellotape you’ll save.

Folk Law from Pearson Hards You better watch out, Santa Claus! It has come to our attention that an investigation is being mounted into the nocturnal activities of Mr Kris Kringle, CEO of S Claus Enterprises Ltd, a.k.a. Father Christmas. Concern is shared across a number of national and multinational agencies regarding the operation of the business from its base in the North. It is understood that the delivery section of the undertaking is in contravention of the Working Time Directive, 2003/88/EC, It appears that world-wide deliveries are carried out in a single night by one operative. This is in clear breach of the regulations regarding rest breaks, and restriction of excessive nighttime hours. Further, enquiries of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have confirmed that the company has failed to file a flight plan since the ICAO received its charter in 1947. Bystander Clement Clarke Moore in his witness statement “A visit from St Nicholas” attested to the fact that the aircraft employed failed to show any internationally accepted markings or navigation lights in contravention of Civil Aviation codes worldwide. In fact Mr Moore stated that the only illumination apparent was a small red light at the nose of the drive assembly of the aircraft. Later commentators have opined that this would only be of use in low cloud or restricted visibility. International animal welfare groups are expressing concern as to the persistent rumours that the delivery aircraft only has a 9 reindeer power drive assembly which is generally accepted to provide insufficient power to achieve take-off during most times of the year. WADA has pledged to carry out a test for banned substances as soon as a sample can be obtained. In the meantime, an unconfirmed report indicates that naval forces are monitoring the passage of the Reindeer Warrior, a ship charted by a sinister organisation of animal rights activists as it makes its way North in a presumed attempt to release livestock held by S Claus Enterprises at its base. Further troubles threaten the enterprise with the possibility of Brexit taking effect. It is believed that some plans are afoot to introduce a points based immigration system for those who are not UK nationals. Whether or not this will affect deliveries is as yet unclear how members of the UK Border

24

Force will be able to interview a deliveryman whose preferred means of access is via the chimney. What is clear however, is that the passage of goods across the borders of UK may well be delayed by increased scrutiny by officials on both sides of the border to ensure that all necessary regulations have been observed. Against the mounting tide of concern, the opinion of lawyers at Pearson Hards is “You better watch out, Santa Claus! The partners and staff of Pearson Hards LLP wish everyone the compliments of the season and hope you have a peaceful and happy holiday period and a prosperous New Year

Pets

Pretty Christmas Trimmings That Can Harm Your Pets The glitz and glitter of Christmas is so pretty that it’s easy to forget the potential dangers of our festive trimmings, so here are some of the possible hazards that may threaten your pet at this time of year. Spray snow looks very pretty but it does contain chemicals that are harmful to animals. If your cat or dog licks the substance they could suffer from sickness and diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal problems. Tinsel can cause a blockage in the intestines if eaten, and might require a trip to the vet to clear the blockage. The sparkle of glitter is very attractive to pets, but glitter is easily ingested. The tiny pieces can also lodge in their eyes and set up a nasty irritation.

Glass baubles present a serious danger to pets if broken, and also pose a choking hazard. Your pet can be electrocuted by fairy lights if bitten through, but there’s also a danger they could become tangled in the lights and be unable to free themselves if they’re alone in the house. Silica gel sachets are very small and your pet may eat them without you noticing. These sachets can cause gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Whilst not wishing to diminish the joy of Christmas, it pays to make sure your pets are safe this festive season. Many of these trimmings aren’t obviously hazardous but they do have the potential to cause serious harm.

What’s On GRAHAM CHILD CHRISTMAS CAROLS The Graham Child Christmas Carols has been going for ten years. Although the idea for the Carols Evening was the brain child of my husband, Graham, in 2006 as a fundraiser for the Mary Preston Holiday, after Graham’s death the evening was renamed in his memory. So we are delighted that it is continuing this Christmas. The Mary Preston Holiday has, sadly, ceased. It ran for more than 60 years, a project supported by the Inner Wheel Clubs in District 14 (south West London, north East Surrey and a bit of Hampshire). The holiday was for carers, or people in need of or deserving a break, often someone recently bereaved, but times change and the way society works these days is very different from the 1950’s. Reluctantly, but sensibly, the Mary Preston Holiday Committee has decided to bring it to an end. So this year the Graham Child Christmas Carols is being organised by Kingston upon Thames Inner Wheel Club and will raise money for their President’s charity which is SMILE UK.. All are welcome on Wednesday, the 4th December, 7.45 p.m. at New Malden Methodist Church, in the High

Street; tickets are £6 per person to include interval refreshments of tea/coffee and mince pies. It is always a good evening; some music, some dancing, some carol singing, and a wonderful start to the countdown to Christmas. Come and enjoy, and support a very worthwhile cause. Tickets: from Lynda Rowland ~ lynrow9761@ btopenworld.com or me, Bobby Child ~ 07946 532 846 infor@operationsmile.org.uk www.innerwheel.co.uk Christ Christ New Malden Primary School Christmas Fair – Saturday 7th December 12 – 4pm, Junior Site, Elm Road Get into the Christmas spirit at Christ Church school’s fabulous Christmas fair with a host of festive stalls, games and musical entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Savour some delicious Korean street food, a sumptuous BBQ or our delightful cakes in the tea room, not forgetting the obligatory glass of mulled wine at the bar. Take a punt on our tombola’s and games, and get creative with the festive crafts. It’s a great way to start your Christmas celebrations. We hope to see you there!

Parkin’ some thoughts Are the Batteries Included?

by Nick Hazell

Ahhhh Christmas. A time for Peace on Earth. Goodwill to all men, women and those of non-determinate gender. This obviously doesn’t apply in the political world where the build up to the festive period this year appears to be a time for insults, sneering and the bulldozing of nativity plays. But it’s not just our governing elite setting fire to the Christmas Spirit. For some of us normal folk, Christmas Day itself can be little more than an annual reunion of a group of people who wouldn’t otherwise have introduced themselves to each other had life not thrown them together. A good friend of mine once explained that his family motto for the festive season was “nunquam iterum” or rather “never again” to us plebs. In his case, the experience was more Eastenders Christmas special than Noel’s Christmas presents. The brandied pudding of arguments was usually ignited by his step father discovering a light fingered relative had made off with a can of his carefully concealed Yuletide scrumpy, or his mother stepping into the after effects of his slightly senile Grandmother’s furtive sprout feeding of the family dog. By the time his nephew was screaming displeasure at opening his long awaited Star Wars light sabre or other Duracell dependent gift only to find that the batteries were not included, it was all over bar the shouting of which there was then plenty. As a consequence, he had about as much enthusiasm for Christmas as a turkey in the care of Bernard Matthews. Others though relish the chance of getting together with family and friends, negotiating the potential fox holes of the occasion with the diplomatic finesse of l’Ambassadeur de Ferrero Rocher, avoiding argumentative relatives, death by charades and the special edition of Strictly Come Dancing. I wouldn’t say Christmas Chez Hazell is always perfect. This year too will have the slightest hint of sadness about it due to a missing participant, but hopefully it will fall into or at least vaguely in the region of the more enjoyable scenario. We at least start from the advantage of enjoying each other’s company and that of our families... well most of the time.

38

Whether you find it a trial or a triumph it’s always worth remembering at this time of year that there

are those that don’t have a choice. They may be on their own, missing a loved one, working away from home or living rough with an unlikely prospect of companionship either way. However, if you are with company this year, let me leave you with this wish. May your family be functional, your friends friendly and your batteries included. Happy Christmas!

A Photographer Dreams... December by Hugh Griffiths

Shoe RePaiRS

and Key Cutting

I never get tired of taking photos when I take Poppy out for her morning walk – I hope that you’re not tired of seeing them! Usually when I go out with her, I only have my iPhone with me, but this time I saw the light (!) and decided to take my main camera out on the walk. (I gave a short series of workshops in August on smartphone photography and it just emphasised to me again that while there are limitations on what you can do with a smartphone, in many cases you can take photos that defy the cost difference between the big SLR and lenses and the (relatively) cheap smartphone). It’s usually a better photograph outside of the spring and summer months because the light is not as fierce or as bright. There is more likely to be some mist, and a low (maybe even invisible) sun can give lovely effects. It was quite cold this day – no clouds and it was December – but bright enough and, actually, very nice to be in the open. Poppy enjoyed herself running around and getting lost in the bushes at the side of the golf course: she has been able to get through the fences there on a couple of occasions, giving me a very worried 20 – 30 minutes trying to find her and get her back. In both cases I worried too much, as she managed to get back on her own. Not today, though. Just running and coming back when I called … which may have been due to the treats I give her when she does what I say! The tree to the left of the picture is one of my favourites as it has a lovely shape in summer or winter and stands almost alone allowing me to photograph it without too much of other trees in the way. There is a slight mist, which I always love, and the colour of the sky is attractive. I don’t think this is the best photo I have taken there, but it certainly does give a ‘sense of place’. In the middle of the month I went down to the coast and looked out for big waves and stormy seas; unfortunately, it was a nice day with none of that. Cold, but nice. I went for lunch to the Perch, a restaurant right

Polish andlovelySundries I was there, sitting on a high stool near the bar, looking out of the window while I ate my fish sticks and chips. leather goods These two ladies were having an animated, friendly, conversation next to me, and I thought that this was more interesting than the sea. School Not that I Bags could hear them, but the way they were interacting was good: in Street this picture – taken on my iPhone153 – it High seems as if they New Malden are having a confrontational staring match. Goodness KT3 4BH knows what had just been said, but it did seem as if the friendliness had gone. In reality, it hadn’t and this picture captures one of those many many moments when our facial expressions don’t truly reflect what we’re thinking.

020 8336 2268

One of the advantages of using your smartphone for photography is that they are not as obvious as a camera – so you can take more natural photos without any posing for the picture. The technical quality of this photo is poor – with a lot of graininess due to the low light in the restaurant, coupled with the brighter light outside. So, not a technically great photo, but one that does demonstrate an interesting moment in time. It’s usually worth taking the photo rather than waiting for the perfect moment or having all the settings properly done. The moment for the picture may only be a short one – and I can’t tell you of how much frustration I feel when I have fiddled too long and the beautiful picture has gone while I did that! A short comment about lights. I thought that our Christmas lights looked beautiful this year as we had bought a new Christmas tree that provided its own lighting. But in my experience photos of Christmas trees usually end up looking rather boring, and with very limited artistic value. So, I photographed one of the tree lights against the reflections in the lounge window, making sure that I had a good focus on the tree light, but soft focus (i.e. blurred!) for the lights

New Malden History

Discovering more about the history of Christ Church New Malden by Stephen Kuhrt

was conducted. This was used to create an exhibition of its story, together with that of its sister church, St John’s, established in 1885. In the last three years, this research has continued resulting in a much greater amount of content now displayed in a much larger and permanent exhibition within the new Christ Church Hall. Around 800 photographs - many of them from the very earliest days of the church’s history are displayed, alongside a great deal of information about the different phases in the church’s story. One of the most popular programmes currently on television is Who do you think you are? Celebrities are helped by experts to trace their family history and the results are frequently surprising and very moving for those concerned. The people who take part discover the deep significance of finding out more about the lives of those who have gone before them. Back in December 2016, Christ Church New Malden celebrated the 150th anniversary of its establishment in 1866. As part of this, research of the church’s history

42

As with Who do you think you are?, the results of this investigation have been both surprising and extremely moving. Christ Church and St John’s, alongside the other churches in New Malden, have played a crucial role in the lives of many people down the years and had a decisive impact upon the development of our town. We would therefore like to extend a warm invitation to any and everyone in New Malden to come and view the exhibition. A place on a guided tour can be arranged by contacting the Parish Office on 0208 942 0915 or office@ccnm.org

Come and learn more about: • The furious row between the first vicar of Christ Church and some of its members in 1870 that led to a break away church in the High Street where Waitrose now stands. • The controversy over Catholicism that caused the same vicar to be angrily refuted in the Surrey Comet by the four times Prime Minister, W.E. Gladstone. • The vicar’s wife who, during the Edwardian era, wrote a series of successful and much loved novels. • The servants who lived in the vicarage and what life was like for them. • The member of Christ Church who, the night before he was mortally wounded on the Western Front during the First World War, wrote a Christian war poem only passed onto his father after he had died. • The curate during the 1920s who started a youth group that affected thousands of young people and later found fame as ‘the British Billy Graham’

• The curate-in-charge of St John’s whom was tragically killed in New Malden on Valentine’s Day 1941 during the Second World War • The keen member of St John’s who won a posthumous Victoria Cross during the same conflict. • The 1950s curate who would cycle around New Malden whilst simultaneously holding up his umbrella. • The vicar during the 1960s whose malapropisms and dangerous driving are still recalled with equal affection and mirth today. • The 1980s curate who was came to faith whilst serving time in a Borstal and later kept a python at his house in Rosebery Avenue. • The secrecy required when the romantic couple, Cliff Richard and Sue Barker were members of Christ Church in the 1980s, and the events that led to their departure. • The development of the role of women through the history of Christ Church and St John’s • The arson attack that almost destroyed the Parish Halls on New Year’s Eve in 1995/6.

Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch Malden and Coombe Royal British Legion would like to thank everyone for their support during the Remembrance Period and the Poppy Appeal. The Police ,the Council and neighbourhood group, Suttles, Lesley and the Girl’s Brigade, Kingston and Malden Scout and Guides Band and Coombe Boys’ school all helped to make the Parade the success is was. The Scouts, Guides and local schools brought the young people together as one. This is the next generation who we hope will continue to support us in our help, not only to remember, but to assist those veterans and families in need. If any New Malden resident knows of any veteran, regardless of if they are RBL members, who are in need, please let us know and we can put them in touch with people who hopefully can help them. That is the purpose of The Royal British Legion. No ex serviceperson nor their family should need to struggle. Help is there. Ring 0808 802 8080 to talk to a Legion representative Our loyal Poppy appeal helpers turned up in force over the fortnight period to collect ,collate, count

and break up boxes etc. Their help was invaluable and I couldn’t have done it without them especially my constant companion Mrs Pat Barnard. We are hoping that our collections will reach our last year target of £20,000. I will let you know the figure when we know it. So, as Christmas approaches we have our AGM and our Christmas meal to look forward to plus various evenings of entertainment at our Grafton Club. We do hope to see new members join us next year. It only cost £17 per year plus £2 to become a Malden and Coombe branch Member. Just ring 0800 307 7773 and talk to a member of RBL. Let’s hope that in 2020 we can help more veterans.
