Welcome to Your Village Voice In 1993 a set of unexpected circumstances led me to spent 6 months enjoying an incredible adventure in Southern Africa. I spent a couple of months in South Africa, one in Zimbabwe and three travelling around Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi in a Toyota Hilux towing a two tonne trailer – 20km in 12 weeks! We’d pitch our tent in the bush before the sun went down, I cooked in a 3 legged pot and we’d star gaze with a gin and tonic or two. Happy memories… even the mechanical disasters (of which there were plenty!) I returned a couple of times but have not been back to Africa for over 15 years so am extremely excited about a trip that will take me to Kenya this month. You can read about it on page 11. Remember that the Village Voice is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. Did you know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of the KT3 postcode, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, New Malden library, Tudor Willams and the Malden Centre but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes

New Malden History First Post

by Robin Gill Early postal services in New Malden had to be conducted via the Office in Kingston, which was accommodated in a grocer’s shop next to the Griffin Hotel. In fact New Malden’s first, and for some years only, postman Frederick Stanley (born locally in Morden) originally lived in Fairfield, from where he travelled to Kingston’s Post Office to collect the post, and then walked to New Malden making his deliveries on the way. Old Freddy as he affectionately became known probably only moved to his new property at 9 Grafton Road, after the Post Office opened an outlet at a grocer’s shop owned by Samuel Devall on the corner of Market Place (High Street) and Grafton Road [where until recently Victoria Wine stood]. Devall, originally from Camberwell, had also only recently moved to the area, and it must have seemed an exciting adventure for him at 46 years old, starting a new business, in a new community, together with the responsibility of dealing with stamps and letters. So in 1866, Samuel and his wife Jane commenced trading in

their Sub (to Kingston) Post Office. The business must have been a success, as the following year, Samuel was allowed to deal in money orders. These were the forerunners of postal orders, and enabled customers to send money by post in relative safety. By 1869, New Malden’s population had grown to approximately 1000, and a second bag of post had to be delivered on a daily basis, and in 1871 a telegraph office commenced operating from the premises. This meant the employment of a boy messenger to deliver the telegrams locally. Under the 1870 Telegraph Act, the government had taken over the numerous private telegraph companies, and then subcontracted the service to the Post Office. The cost of a telegram was reduced from 1/- for twenty words in 1869, to 6d for twelve words by 1885. The first separate public mail box could well have been a wall box established in Lime Grove in 1874; certainly the oldest pillar box still in situ locally is at the junction of Nelson Road and Westbury Road. By 1875, a third daily delivery was in place, and three years later New Malden was officially allocated district number 019.

Samuel had retired by 1881 and went to live in Acacia Grove, but Jane died in the winter of 1886 and Samuel must have fallen on hard times as in 1891 he is a lodger in Grafton Road, and at the time of his death on 19th February 1892, he had been removed to Kingston Workhouse. He is buried in Kingston Cemetery. New man Following Samuel Devall’s retirement, new premises had to be found for the Post Office. Two other shops were tried but for various reasons neither was successful. So in April 1881 the business was contracted to Frederick James Hawkins who had recently opened a “Fancy Repository” at 6 Market Place (now High Street premises of Parry and Drewett?). Hawkins was originally from Buckinghamshire, and had previously worked for the Post Office in Sutton. Even though a lot of the area was still cornfields and pastureland, with New Malden’s population now over 2500 the postal authorities needed a man with experience so, together with his wife Margaret from Kinross, Hawkins set about making the enterprise a success. The telegram messengers were paid extra when they had to deliver to the “important “occupiers of Coombe House. By 1883 the New Malden delivery area had increased to encompass parts of Norbiton and Coombe previously served by Kingston, including Coombe Wood by 1886.

By 1886 parcels were also delivered from New Malden, and the office was also given the responsibility of sending the night mail direct to London previously sent via Kingston. Sunday evening deliveries were established in the area in 1892 and another sub post office opened at Norbiton Common in September of that year, and in 1893 New Malden were supplied with a truck (platform on wheels) to help move the post. Old Freddy New Malden’s original postman Frederick Stanley retired in 1896 after completing over 30 years delivering in the area. I am unsure whether he was at all like Thomas Brown the letter carrier in “From Lark Rise To Candleford” currently on our screens on Sunday evenings. His uniform would have been similar although his bag might have been larger (he covered the whole of New Malden twice a day). He certainly attended church, as he took to organ blowing regularly at Christchurch in his later years. He died on 31st March 1903 at his home in Grafton Road. His funeral was widely attended, with many of his former colleagues present in uniform. The procession walked from Grafton Road to Christchurch, and after the

service to Kingston Cemetery. The coffin was carried by members of the Post Office then working at New Malden. In 1898 three new boy messengers were taken on to deliver telegrams (In 1900, ninety million telegrams were sent nationally!). The Post Office in Elm Road/Northcote Road opened in July 1899, with Frederick Moore in charge. This later in July 1907 became an office where members of the public could also make and receive telephone calls. The council agreed to the laying of Post Office telephone wires in 1901 enabling many private homes to be connected with friends and family. Transport New Malden’s first bicycle was received in 1901 together with an allowance for cleaning and sheltering the machine. The use of bicycles within the service had increased due to the extension of the radius for the free delivery of telegrams from one to three miles. The bicycles were specially made for the Post Office until 1904 when the specification was abandoned because most manufacturers could not produce the design which needed special machinery. By 1903 New Malden had two bicycles. Another sub office this time in Kingston Road opened in 1904 with William Frost in charge, again this was designated a telephone office for the public. The amount of staff employed meant other responsibilities and in 1905 Dr William G Porter originally from Jersey, was appointed the official medical officer with Dr Cowan as an associate. The Burlington Road sub office opened in 1907 along with that at West Barnes (Seaforth Avenue). Collections from these sub offices and the main office varied between four and seven times daily, and once on Sundays. By 1908 Frederick Hawkins was trading as a printer and stationer, as well as operating the post office, and telegrams from his premises. Deliveries took place four times a day (6.45am, 9.45am, 2.45pm, and 6.45pm) and at 7.25am on Sundays. Fit for purpose In July 1910 with New Malden growing at an increasing rate, a purpose built Post Office was needed, and at 8am on 18th July the new premises at 9 Coombe Road (now Barnard Marcus) opened its doors. , with Hawkins still in charge.

8

During the war, postwomen were recruited to take the place of those who had joined up. Frederick Hawkins retired in February 1922 after completing 41 years as postmaster. Certainly the contribution he and his wife, who served behind the counter, had given to the local community helped the post office become such a success in the area. In particular the sensitive way they dealt with the “red envelopes” from the War Office which brought devastating news to families in the area during the First World War. These were delivered personally by Mr Hawkins, who stayed to comfort relatives when required. The number of staff had risen to 24 and the population of the postal area (which now included West Barnes) had risen to 20,000. It was inevitable that with such an increase in members of the public, the service suffered to some degree. In 1928 there were complaints that letters posted in New Malden were taking 24 hours to reach Worcester Park. As the area grew, so did the number of Post Offices, in 1931 the office in Motspur Park was established, and just prior to the Second World War in 1938 the Post Office in South Lane opened. Present building The present Post Office in the High Street was officially opened by Mr FS Wagner the chairman of the council on 25th October 1933. He opened the door with a souvenir key that had been presented to him. He then proceeded to purchase the first stamp and make the first call from the new telephone boxes. The design did not receive universal acclaim, some suggesting that it resembled an early effort from a child’s box of bricks and that it looked better from the side than the front. It was said that New Malden had been “sold a lemon”. It was stated to have been constructed on “modern lines” and that the architecture had been kept simple and efficient and was an asset to New Malden. It was a building to be proud of, and marked an important milestone in the transformation of the village into a town, plus it would be in use 24 hours a day. It certainly had modern features, using calorex glass for the roof of the sorting office which diffused the rays of the sun, and there was ample room for any extension, in fact the sorting office area could be doubled. The exterior contained illuminated stamp machines in the wall together with a conspicuous clock. Proceeding through a large vestibule that contained two telephone cabinets fitted with the new ”hand microphones”.

The main counter was covered with dark blue material, with stamp pads and fittings to match. The whole main hall had panel heating. On the ground floor there was the vestibule, public office, sorting office, strong room and postmaster’s room, whilst the first floor held the “welfare rooms” for the 49 employees, and the basement held the heating plant and store rooms. It was promised that letters posted in London by 2.30pm would be delivered in New Malden the same day, as would letters posted in the local area by 6.45pm.

Charity The Lunchbowl Network by Jenny Stuart

On March 10th, I’m going to Nairobi, Kenya with Heidi Gomes, Mandy Cormack and Heather Churchouse to visit a charity which we’ve been supporting pretty much since it was founded ten years ago. Heidi was one of the original trustees so has been fundraising since the very beginning. Lunchbowl operates in the Kibera Slum with a feeding programme for 500 children, and now also two kindergartens. We have, over the years, raised tens of thousands of pounds – you may remember some of our recent events…? Quizmas last year (over £13K), Wild Woods in Wimbledon Common Oct 14 (over £2K), funday sunday July 13 (£6,560), Mardi Gras in Beverley park (£3,150).... Thank you! Every 33p we raise in the UK feeds a child in Lunchbowl and we have in the last ten years ensured that all the children in our programme have been fed and cared for. We have now expanded to education, as the key to breaking the cycle of poverty is to prepare these

12

children for a different life. Nobody takes a salary in Lunchbowl and the trip is entirely self-funded by those of us going, so you can rest assured that every donation goes directly to where it’s intended. There are some play items that we’d love to take out – so if you have any Popoids (if you have them you’d probably know!) and wooden construction blocks looking for a very good home please email me jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk and I could pick them up. Or if you’d like to make a donation you could send me a cheque (address on page 4) made payable to The Lunchbowl Network, and I’ll let you know how any donations are spent. Thank you so so much on behalf of all the Lunchbowl children. Anyway, I am sure it will be an emotional week. I’ll let you know how it goes next month. If you’d like to find out more about the charity please visit our website www.lunchbowl.org

Community New Malden Farmers Market is back! After its winter’s break the market is back on the first Saturday of every month at Fountain pub car park in Burlington Road from 9am to 2pm. The not for profit community market run by local volunteers to raise money for charities and good causes has been going from strength to strength which included being featured in Time Out magazine. One of the key aims of the market is to encourage people to shop locally and support local businesses and the High Street. Last year the market had over 5,000 visitors. As result of this it was able to donate £2,000 to various charities. These included the Spartans swimming club for disabled people; Weir Archer Academy, which supports and trains disabled young athletes; Great Ormond Street Hospital; and Yorda Adventures, a local charity providing play projects for children and young people with severe learning disabilities. The market has been attracting new exciting

additions to the number and variety of stalls including a number of local start up businesses. New stalls joined the market featuring local honey, aloe vera products, preserves from locally grown produce, and gluten free sweet and savoury delicacies. This is in addition to the stalwarts of high quality fruit and vegetables; high welfare meat; wonderful range of fresh fish; fantastic bread, sweet and savoury products; cakes; splendid English cheeses; exotic range of olives; pasties and pastries. There has also been a flavoursome range of food to eat or take away including the extremely popular hog roast, Goan and Indian specialities as well as Vietnamese street food. As part of supporting local and start up businesses the market is offering a free 30 minute slot for local businesses who would like the opportunity to showcase their products, skills or services. The same applies to anyone that would like to offer musical or other appropriate entertainment. A variety of entertainment has also been laid on throughout the year with Eddie the busker, Allotment Dave and the wonderful New Malden Ukulele Group putting on a scintillating show at our Christmas market in December. The younger generation were not missed out with a Easter egg painting competition at the market in March and a bouncy castle in summer. Also a major aim of the market is for it to be a focus for community events. As part of this public consultation by Kingston council on the future development of Cocks Crescent and adjoining areas took place in the summer. This drew non-stop queuing by large numbers of people wanting to find out more and get involved. Local councillors also held a workshop in December together with environmental services informing people of the changes to recycling. The community police also joined the market with their popular bike security marking event as well as providing lots of other tips about security and safety. The market also hosts a local charity stall every month free of charge to further promote and support

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

local charities in New Malden. This included the local heritage society, Barnfield horse riding for the disabled, the London Wildlife Trust and the British Legion. The growth and popularity of the market means that there is a need for more volunteers to help with various tasks on the day and beforehand. No matter how little or much time you have to spare all help would be welcomed. Get in touch via the web site. Anyone interested in having a stall at the market can also check availability via the web site. The market’s ability to continue owes much to the support of the Fountain pub management and their new owners Greene King who provide the use of the car park free of charge. In recognition of this support a donation was made to the pub’s nominated charity the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Dates for the market for 2016 are: 2nd April; 7th May; 4th June; 2nd July; 6th August; 3rd September; 1st October; 5th November; and 3rd December. Interested in having your say on Infrastructure to Support Growth? Join in the Neighbourhood Conversation and talk about your priorities this March. Dear Resident, You are invited to take part in the next Neighbourhood Conversation in Maldens and Coombe on Tuesday 15 March. Kingston Council launched Neighbourhood Conversations last year across the Borough to talk about important local issues, so come along and join the debate. The forums give local residents the chance to discuss their priorities and develop solutions together with local councillors, senior council officers and partners including the NHS. Come along and join the debate, with feedback gathered and developed into a new Community Plan for Maldens and Coombe to help define the way services are delivered in the area. Each Neighbourhood Conversation will follow a different theme, based on suggestions given by local residents. The theme for the second meeting is Infrastructure to Support Growth, which will include such areas as health services, education provision and affordable housing. This theme has been taken directly from feedback we’ve received from you at community engagement events locally, as well as from the last Neighbourhood Conversation in November. The Infrastructure to Support Growth Conversation will take place on Tuesday 15 March, 7:30 pm at Burlington Junior School, Burlington Road, New Malden, KT3 4LT. The doors will open at 7pm. You will have the chance to meet and talk with other attendees over a cup of tea or coffee. To help organise refreshments, I would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance. For more information or to RSVP visit www.kingston.gov.uk/conversation or phone 020 8547 6377. If you have access to Facebook search for Maldens & Coombe Neighbourhood for regular updates. You can also follow me on Twitter @hannah_keates I look forward to meeting you in March.

Cake and Bake Iced Orange Bundt Cake This delicious citrus flavoured sponge is made in a classic ring-shaped bundt tin. You’ll find them in most good cook shops and larger supermarkets, or you can use an ordinary 1.5L capacity ring mould tin instead.

Ingredients: • 200g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 300g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 200g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp baking powder • Finely grated zest of 1 large orange • 100ml fresh orange juice • 100-150ml milk

FOR THE ICING • 100g icing sugar • Approx 2 tbsp fresh orange juice

Serves 10 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus cooling and setting times 18

1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Thoroughly

grease a 22-23cm Bundt tin (measured across the top) with butter then lightly dust with flour, tipping out the excess.

2. Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat

together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then sift over the flour and baking powder and fold in along with the orange zest and juice. Fold in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.

3. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin and

gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake is risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then carefully turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl then beat

in the orange juice to make a smooth and thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drizzle down the sides. Leave in a cool place until set.

TIP

Make sure to grease and flour the bundt tin thoroughly or you may find it tricky to turn the cake out. Use the tip of a small palette knife or silicon spatula to gently loosen the edges of the cake first.

View from the City by Justin Urquhart Stewart Fear of Falling - Fear of Losing Volatile and bungee jumping stock markets along with morose newsreaders, can all put the fear of financial failure into our heads. Recent weeks have been a perfect case in point. Stockmarkets around the world have been see-sawing around with little sensible rhyme or reason. In fact, the excuses given have varied as the newspapers leap from one apparent excuse to another. So was it the rate rise in the US? Well the anticipated plan for further rises seem to been curtailed, so probably not. Or maybe the possible hard landing for the Chinese economy? Well it is still growing at a rather respectable rate, so probably not. Well, if not, then it must have been the plummeting oil price, but that is in fact better for most of the world, not worse. Or then was it the possibility of an impending global recession? Well with employment at record levels in the UK and falling unemployment elsewhere in the developing nations, this hardly looks like the precursor for a recession. The reasons or excuses seem to be legion, and the fact is that there is no one single reason, but rather that the key word in any economy has in fact been effected - and that is confidence.

manage to miss the best performing days in the market. I have some data from the US S&P500 index covering a 20 year period from 1996 to the end of 2015 - 5,036 trading days if you wish to count them. During that time, had you stayed invested you would have had an annualised return of 8.19% which is quite healthy return. However, had you manage to miss the best 40 days out of the 5,036 days you would have actually lost money? In fact you would bear down 1.96% - which after twenty years would at the very least be very depressing. So the truth is we cannot afford to be out of the market, and that unless you think like the often quoted Private Frazer from Dad’s Army that we are all doomed, that we should not be panicked into selling out. The old take away line we always had in the investment world (in the City) was that it is “Time in the market - not timing the market”. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

However, the vital issue though for all of us is what should we be all doing? Well for me there are two clear issues that should guide us especially in such moments of fear and fervor. Firstly compounding. It is all too easy to be scared, quite understandably by the headlines and the low tones of the newsreaders - Hugh Edwards doesn’t really mean it, but if the markets drop dramatically he obviously has to sound suitably serious. However, the effect is serious for many as their confidence is seeped away. Let me then counter this with an investment rule that is far more powerful than see-sawing stockmarkets. If your dear granny had left you £100, 69 years ago, and invested it in the UK market you would have now something in the region of £9,000. Not bad but hardly exciting. However, if she had done the same but this time invested all those tiny little dividends over those 69 years, the result would be very different – with just over £180,000. A sum far greater than any day to day market gyrations. Secondly, there are some compelling figures of what happens to your investments if, for whatever reason you

TAX YEAR ENDING by Dominic Thomas If it hasn’t started already, you will soon be swamped with reminders about using your tax year allowances. The 2015/16 tax year ends on 5th April 2016 which means you have until then to take advantage of some encouraged (and legal) tax planning. Pension Tax Relief It is highly likely that tax relief may be changing, we will have to see what happens in the Budget on 16th March. However, at the moment, everyone gets 20% on top of whatever they invest. Higher rate taxpayers can reclaim another 20% via their tax returns. How often does your money increase by 20% instantly?...well it does with a payment into a pension. ISAs and Junior ISAs. Each adult can invest up to £15,240 into an ISA. The main advantage is

that all growth will be tax-free, so if you use it as a source of income later, it will be a tax-free income. Any investment ought to be long-term, but in the event that you need the money back, you can access it quickly. Capital Gains Tax If you are lucky enough to have made some good gains on taxable investments, perhaps you should consider selling some to use your CGT allowance. You are allowed to make gains of £11,100 without paying CGT (per person, per tax year - but use it or lose it). If you are in a hurry and want to use your allowance before the deadline, our 100 Club enables you to buy your ISA online, choose either a low cost portfolio or an ethical one… and we are waiving our set up fee. Alternatively if you want a proper review of what you have already to see if it is working well for you, get in touch to see if we can help. One’s Live At Apollo, BBC Three’s Unzipped and ITV2’s Celebrity Juice. Tickets: £12-21* Tue 26 Apr – Sat 7 May Rose Theatre, English Touring Theatre and Royal & Derngate’s The Herbal Bed Written by Peter Whelan Directed by James Dacre “I have always wanted that which I cannot have.” When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour, her husband chooses to stand by her, suing her accuser for slander. In doing so, their lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny in this emotional thriller, based upon real events from Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613. A powerful exposé of the contradiction between human desire and social convention which seeks to repress it, Peter Whelan’s moving and uplifting play provides a beautiful evocation of life in Shakespearean England. Gardening Vertical Cover With Climbers Pippa Greenwood

If the boundaries of your garden are uninteresting or drab, then it is time to think about some vertical gardening. Upright surfaces are itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs, and if you have several vertical sites then so much the better. A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by looking at the surface you have, the size, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Soil type is important as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and improve as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which to grow your climbers. Break up the monotony of a long stretch of wall with a range of different plants, and make a tall, narrow building seem broader by only allowing them to reach the height of the first floor. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground as they tend to have sizeable root systems. If grown in containers you must re-pot regularly and ultimately plan to use a big container such as a half barrel. Use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit for drainage, and place a deep layer of crocks at the base of the container. Add controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, to ensure that plants get adequately fed for the first few months. A triangular or V-shaped trellis panel at the back will give initial support for the plant to climb up before moving on to your wall or fence. Tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. For ground planting, dig a large hole at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the wall or fence and incorporate plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Soak the plant’s root ball and place in the hole, ideally at a 45 degree angle so that it leans towards the wall, then spread out the roots and plant. If your climber came already attached to bamboo canes, untie the stems from any central stake and train

44

the best looking shoots towards your new support system, using the bamboo canes to help it on its way. Keep climbers well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants, but here are some suggestions: Vigorous climbers for a quick effect: Actinidia chinensis Akebia quinata Clematis montana Clematis montana ‘Rubens’ Vitis coignetiae Climbers for clay soils: Campsis Celastrus scandens Clematis Ivies Golden hop Climbing hydrangea Honeysuckles (most) Vitis coignetiae Climbers for an alkaline or chalky soil: Actinidia kolomikta Akebia quinata Clematis Ivies Climbing hydrangea Jasminum officinale Honeysuckles Trachelospermum jasminoides Wisteria Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Golden Years Memories of 50 years ago

British, and born in the 1950s or earlier? Congratulations! You’re a genius at mental arithmetic! There are no studies, surveys or statistics to prove this, but it stands to reason: you needed a brain from IBM just to work out your change! Here’s a simple test for anyone under 50. On Friday you go out with £1.17.4. You buy a pint of mild for Alf at 1s 2d, a bottle of sweet stout for Alf’s missus Mabel (no white wine for the ladies in those days!) at 10 and 1/2d, a pint of bitter for yourself at 1s 5d, a packet of crisps at 3d, and a dark rum for old Harry at 1s 8d. Later, it’s your round again – same again but no crisps, and Harry has a double (which he never does when it’s his round!). Later still the fish man comes and you have a poke of shrimps, 4d; then you give the lass from the Sally Army 2d for a War Cry which you never actually read. At chucking out time you buy a bottle of Guinness to take home, 1s 9d (1d back on the bottle). So: have you got enough left over to see Rovers at home tomorrow and buy a pie and a Bovril at the ground? And that’s why we had decimalisation. People think, wrongly, that Britain got decimalised on April 15th 1971, or D-Day as the press dubbed it. The real D-Day was March 1st 1966 when the Chancellor, Jim Callaghan, officially announced that the Government had accepted the report of a committee of enquiry (now more than two years old) and that a currency that was, in essence, more than 1,200 years old would be scrapped in five years’ time. The announcement marked the end of a long, slow march towards decimalisation. When the Decimal Association was founded in 1841 many people saw it as another manifestation of that extreme rationalism that demanded a 13-month year and one universal language. But it at least succeeded in getting a new coin minted from 1849 onwards: the florin, worth two shillings – or 10 to the pound! The florin, though, failed to our perception of the pound and shilling as the base units of currency. We were used to working with bases 12 and 20, and that’s why Britain was so good at arithmetic. (The above example is simple subtraction: imagine you were a wages clerk making up weekly pay-packets for 100-odd workers all of whom worked different hours at different rates!)

50

Another reason why the old money had to go was that it was so damned BIG! Have you ever seen it? You needed a gusset sewn into your change pocket or all those farthings, halfpennies, cartwheel pennies, 12-sided threepenny bits, tanners, bobs, florins and half-crowns would wear a hole in it in days. Still, there was a lot of resistance; and only when South Africa and Australia took the lead did Harold McMillan authorise the committee of enquiry in 1961. Once Mr Callaghan had made the formal announcement, though, things moved fast. The Decimal Coinage Act and the Decimal Currency Board came in 1969 along with the 50p piece. The new 5p and 10p came in 1970 and were the same size as the shilling and florin they eventually replaced. The only real change on D-Day itself was the introduction of the new 1/2p, 1p and 2p, although even then the old coppers remained in circulation until August. Was it worth it? A lot of old folk got fooled into thinking that 6p was the same as 6d when of course it was closer to 1s 2 and 1/2d; but my 23-year-old daughter is astonished and appalled that we put up with a system that mixed not only base 12 and base 20 but also fractions of the basic unit for so long. Still, we were brilliant at mental arithmetic! Happy 50th birthdays to Alan Davies (6th), Nigel Clough (19th), and Michael Imperioli (26th). Cake and botox to you all!

The proposed option for Wimbledon railway station requires the part demolition of Centre Court shopping centre. There is widespread local concern at the impact of a decade of construction. We appreciate there will be enormous gains from the scheme to commuters from the increased capacity and alternative direct route, especially relief to severe crowding on trains at peak times. However we share the concerns of residents and businesses of Raynes Park, Wimbledon and Motspur Park. Construction and station closures will cause prolonged and severe disruption to New Malden’s commuters, local businesses, visitors and to residents’ leisure travel. An application to Parliament is scheduled for 2017-20 with construction proposed for 2020-29 and opening to the public in 2030. Crossrail 2 advise nothing more will be done without further consultation and will be talking to residents in more detail in the spring. We will press for a dedicated public meeting to be held centrally in New Malden. We believe full resident and business participation is required to ensure the viability of our town centre is maintained. 1 Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon. 2 Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf. 3 Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender. 4 Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs. Tip This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

A Photographer Dreams March by Hugh Griffiths www.creativelight.org.uk The National Trust is real jewel in the crown of Britain. We are very fortunate to have easy access to these well cared for and beautiful places. There are loads of them around New Malden, and this picture was taken in Claremont Gardens on St. David’s Day. It’s the beginning of Spring and the birds are camera equipment along. But still, I wanted to take some memory pictures of Paris so the camera came with us. The boat trip along the Seine was brilliant – and I took some very atmospheric pictures of people sitting or jogging along the bank; the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay were, of course, splendid. And then there was the Arc de Triomphe. At the end of the Champs Élysées is this magnificent piece of architecture. It looks one way towards the Eiffel Tower, and the other to La Défense. feeling frisky. I took my long lens with me because I knew there would be a reason to use it. This picture was taken at almost its fullest extension giving me the equivalent of nearly 600 mm of lens (thank you Canon for the cropped sensors that make lenses give more magnification) and I have hardly cut anything off the original. In Lightroom I straightened the image and did a little bit of colour balancing and boosting the contrast. But the big thing was that I was sitting down, watching these doves as they cooed and billed at each other. I was watching for about 30 minutes – not that long really – and only took a few pictures. However, I was looking for something that characterised the doves’ relationship with each other. They were clearly ecstatic – dancing together and shutting their eyes in pleasure at the other’s company. I think I may be being a bit over-romantic but that is the way it seems and it doesn’t hurt to imagine the thoughts of the two lovers.

Paris’ architecture is pretty inspiring – and the view was fantastic. But how to get a good representation of what I saw? I put the camera on its widest angle so that I would get as much of the scene as possible on the photo. Then I set the picture so that the roads were on either side of the centre. The Eiffel Tower was just off-centre – excellent, that makes you work to get into the scene. And once I got home, I cleaned it up in Adobe Lightroom and darkened the sky slightly. The picture was made, however, by the thought put into it when it was taken. Having the tower sticking out like that, with its tip touching the clouds was central to making it a success. Good composition is in my view, the centre of good photography – and this one was thought out at the time. You can play around in Photoshop to change a picture, but I find it much more satisfying to be out there with my camera, rather than in here with my computer! The Malden Camera Club meets every Thursday (except in August) with the aim of helping us to become better photographers – came along and give us a try.

Later in March, my wife and I went to Paris to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Of course the camera came along as well – it can get in the way of romantic days if you are carrying a big bag full of 58 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

Organisations Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch

We are privileged to have long term New Malden resident Major Ron Morris MBE as our President. Ron enlisted in the Army in 1944 and his 37 years’ service included East Surrey Regiment and the Queen’s Regiment, both forerunners of The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.

Ron says, “I saw the branch dwindle to 4 members over the years and almost face closure. However the efforts of our late secretary, Mary Gillett, and a small group of committed volunteers kept it going.

Ron has been a Royal British Legion member for 25 years. He was recently honoured at County Conference being presented with the Legionnaire Award in recognition of many years of work at branch and county level.

“I’m pleased we currently have a proactive and enthusiastic team of local residents with a growing membership. There’s a misconception that the Legion is only concerned with Remembrance. I hope New Malden can get behind us and support the Legion’s aims to raise funds for serving men and women of the Armed Forces, their families and veterans.” MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN TO EVERYONE, NOT JUST MEMBERS OR EX-MEMBERS OF THE FORCES. For information please contact Jan Feist: janfeist@hotmail.com or Lynne Finnerty: rbl. maldenandcoombe@gmail.com or phone 07857 422140 We desperately need more volunteers for the Poppy Appeal 2016. There are six Royal British Legion care homes across the UK exclusive to ex-service people and their dependents. Four have specialist dementia care units with a fifth dedicated facility due to be opened this year. Galanos House in Warwickshire was named ‘Care Home of the Year 2015’ by the National Care Awards for its high standard of care and the dedicated dementia care unit, Poppy Lodge. Readers may have seen Poppy Lodge featured on the Channel 4 documentary ‘Dementiaville’ which explored progressive approaches to dementia care. The Royal British Legion also has a community service through Admiral Nurses supporting carers of those living with dementia and has provided a grant to run the Memory Café in Plymouth run by Alzheimer’s Association.
