Competition Last summer I was part of a small committee who organised an event to commemorate the civilian casualties from New Malden who died during the Second World War. It was solemn and poignant event that was really well supported by local residents of all ages who came to pay their respects. This month a short dedication will take place by the war memorial unveiling a plaque marking a tree which has been planted as a permanent memorial and funded from the retiring collection that we held last year. Please join us on Saturday 15 October at 10am.You can read more about this on page 13. Have a great month and remember to get in touch if you have anything to say about local clubs and organisations. And, if you’re a local business then why not look at advertising in next month’s edition – if you’re reading this, then so are your potential customers. Enjoy! Jenny Stuart Editor and publisher PS - make sure you mark on calendars that Father Christmas is coming to New Malden High Street to switch on our Christmas lights on Friday 25th Nov at 5.30pm The next edition will be available in the Library, Waitrose, Tudor Williams, Chicco Cafe, Heads Fine Foods, Tam Leisure and other outlets from 4th Nov Next copy deadline: 17th October Published by Malden Media Limited 36 Rosebery Avenue, KT3 4JS E: jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk 020 8336 2915 Also publishing www.nmvv.co.uk Worcester Park Life

A series of unfortunate events by Robin Gill

If an inquest was needed it would normally be held in the nearest available location following any sudden or unexplained death. In the early years Malden did not have official council or public premises other than public houses, which explains why the first inquest held in New Malden was held at the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse) on Tuesday 11th July 1865. The inquest was into the death of Lionel Louis Felton aged 23, who was born in Richmond but had come to New Malden with his parents in the early 1860s. Lydia, his mother had found him dead the previous morning in his bedroom, with a bell rope around his neck which was attached to his bed. A “full enquiry” was held and a verdict of “temporary insanity” was returned. An unhappy Christmas Samuel Jones was truly a man of the sea. He was even born

at sea, and liked nothing better than a tot of rum every once in a while. Samuel had been a labourer for most of his working life, and now in his sixties was inclined to suffer from rheumatism, and had been given some lotion a few months earlier for relief by Dr Child from his aches and pains. On Christmas Eve 1884 he brought home a bottle of rum, and placed it close to the bottle of lotion on the mantelpiece above the fireplace at the house Samuel and his wife Ann lived in at 2 Lime Villas on the Kingston Road - close to the junction with Cleveland Road (now Kingston Lodge). On Christmas Day, Samuel got up around 7.30am and, after getting dressed, decided he would like a glass of his favourite tipple. Getting down the bottle he poured some into a glass and took a drink. He immediately realised he had used the wrong bottle, and shouted to his wife that he had drank the lotion. Grabbing the bottle, he headed out of the door, followed by his wife in order to reach the doctor’s surgery which fortunately was nearby (now the offices of Pearson Maddin solicitors). Dr Child asked him how much he had taken, and was told about 10 drachms (about 35 ml). The doctor immediately gave Samuel emetics to help bring up the poison, but they had no effect, so he had to lay him on the floor, and apply a stomach pump. After about an hour of treatment Samuel was allowed home, and he went straight to lie on his bed. A neighbour from Cleveland Road, Jasper Brooks tried to keep him awake, but Samuel soon became delirious, and died at about 12.45 that morning. An inquest was held at the Norbiton Park Hotel (now The Fountain) on 30th December when the elected foreman was Thomas Montague who ran a grocery store in the Market Place (High Street). Chaired by the coroner Mr Braxton-Hicks the court heard Dr Child state that the lotion contained belladonna and aconite (both highly poisonous) and although an antidote had been given, the aconite was too strong a toxin. The view was that as Samuel had gone downstairs while it was still twilight, he must have mistaken one bottle for another. The verdict was returned “death from misadventure”. A determined suicide Emma Hamilton who was described as tall and good looking, had arrived in New Malden in May 1897, and u

taken up residence in a large house in Lime Grove called The Laburnums where she had recently been joined by her sister Lucy. On Thursday 22nd July she jumped in front of a moving goods train at New Malden Station, and was killed instantly. It was only at the inquiry held in Kingston a week later that the whole sorry story came out. Emma who was 31 years old had been born just outside Newton Abbot, and had travelled to London to work. She obtained a job working as a servant in the home of Thomas Moss a draughtsman and engraver in Islington, but must have fallen on hard times. Her circumstances when she met Walter Bernard Hamilton were entirely different. In March 1884 Bernard had reached his 21st birthday and had inherited £100,000 (equivalent today £7 million), the same day he met Emma who was working as a prostitute in the area of the new Empire Theatre in

Leicester Square. He was so attracted to her, that he decided to reclaim and marry her, and this he did in Geneva Switzerland, probably because such a union would have been frowned on in London. The marriage did not last, and Emma was in hospital in 1891 (I am not sure whether this was a physical or mental illness), and by 1896 there was a petition for divorce, which became absolute in May 1897 resulting in Emma’s removal to New Malden. Bernard wrote to Emma announcing that he was to remarry. His new wife was to be Ellen Adele Day, another person who had been through a divorce, her first husband being described as “an incorrigible womaniser”. Ellen was the daughter of a fashionable London dentist, and like Bernard had ambitions to be a well known author. Bernard’s letter told Emma not to misbehave, or he would cut her “allowance” (alimony) which was £200 per annum, to 28 shillings (£1.40) a week. Unbeknown to most people in New Malden, Emma had

already made two attempts to take her own life, by taking poison (on 11th), and attempting to hang herself (on 12th), and had Dr George Cowen, a local doctor in daily attendance. She seemed in better spirits that Thursday afternoon, when she and her sister decided to travel by train to Kingston. “By mistake” they found themselves on the up platform at the station, turning to go back to the other platform Lucy (her sister) saw Emma jump in front of an incoming goods train travelling at 15mph. The driver (Charles Pheby) blew his whistle and brought the train to a halt, but by then it was too late, Emma was knocked into the gap between the rails, and had been killed instantly. Her body was taken to the waiting room, and Mr Alfred Chalkley the stationmaster contacted the local doctor Dr Davison, who officially confirmed the death. Under the supervision of the police, Emma was placed in an ambulance and taken to Kingston Mortuary. Evidence was given from friends that Emma felt the whole world was against her with the sole exception of her ex-husband who, in a note she left, she absolved of

any blame of what had happened to her. The verdict given at the end of the inquest was “Suicide while temporarily insane” She was buried in Kingston Cemetery in large oak coffin with massive brass handles, and attended by a few friends. She left effects of £65 in her will. Bernard did not waste time, marrying within a month, but the marriage was an unhappy one, and he squandered all his money on women and drink. I am indebted to the contributors of rootschat for their help in unravelling this story. Illustrations 1) Kingston Road 2) Lime Grove 3) Malden and Coombe Station VVoice

and brass plaque will finally take its rightful place on the High Street, serving as a fitting and lasting tribute to those who died – the descendants and family members of many of whom are still living in and around New Malden.

Just over a year ago, on a sunny September afternoon, over 300 local residents (both past and present) attended a moving service at Christ Church to pay their respects to those who lost their lives when New Malden suffered serious bomb damage during the 1940s ‘Blitz’. Over 100 civilian lives were lost in the area between the years 1940 – 1945, with the biggest single amount of fatalities occurring on August 16 1940, when the train line and surrounding area was hit. Another strike on September 9TH 1940, killed further civilians, as well as causing extensive damage and destroying hundreds of homes and business premises. So, 70 years on, it really was a truly poignant and special day when people of all ages – from local school children to war veterans – came together as part of the national remembrance of the Blitz and to celebrate the unique spirit displayed by the British people. A retiring collection was taken as the congregation filed out – the proceeds of which have funded a permanent memorial that will stand just outside Waitrose. A tree

Reverend Stephen Kuhrt, Vicar of Christ Church’comments, “The 70th Anniversary of the Malden Blitz gave us a poignant and relevant reason to honour past members of our community who died during the war years and to ensure that they are not forgotten. Thanks to the generosity of many members of our current community, we are delighted that we have finally been able to erect an appropriate tribute in the heart of the High Street, so close to where those devastating bombs fell. We will really welcome as many people as possible to come and join us on Sat 15th October for what we hope will be a simple and uplifting ceremony.” www.maldenblitz.co.uk VVoice

A Vickers Validation? by Justin Urquhart Stewart

the city

The pressure welled up further this last week over the fear of another credit crunch. Each day seemed to increase the expectation for a final eruption from Stromboli to tear apart the increasingly nervous and fragile Eurozone banking system. This financial charade seemed to be being played out as the politicians were seen to be continuing to dither about taking decisive decisions, with accusations being lobbed around the world with a howitzer of hyperbole coming in from China and the US. Finally we heard of the combined

intervention from five central banks and at last it seems that we could be seeing some significant action to try and at least ease the pressure for the time being and give further confidence to some of the most worried banks under pressure. This however buys time – just a few months, but vital time for nerves about the banks to calm down and ease the liquidity situation and prevent a further cramping of inter-bank finance. It does not in itself though resolve the underlying issues of currency management and confidence. A few days on from the publication of the Vickers report, you cannot have had a better justification for ring-fencing of commercial and investment banks than the UBS trading losses. The report itself did not seem to identify a key issue that has always been my concern – that of culture. Having worked in both, I see a fundamental difference between the two; the commercial bank (or clearing

bank) as a service bank designed to service their clients. The investment bank essentially focused on primarily serving itself. Obviously the division is simplistic but the cultural differences frankly have been clear for all to see.

Such a division though would never have prevented the last crisis, as of course we can see where the commercial banks with their ‘service’ frankly failed abysmally with bad loans by bad bankers and inexperienced regulators. As examples we just have to look at HBOS – virtually running a form of high risk private equity commercial banking system and the failure of the Northern Rock mortgage regime. However the UBS trading loss serves to remind us of the trading risks. As ever it is easy to blame the primary culprit of course, but it must also be the failure of disciplines, controls and culture within the business that allows such disasters to occur. VVoice

community

Kingston’s own organic fruit and veg box scheme, offers affordable fresh organic produce, bread, jams and cheese to the communities of the Royal Borough of Kingston. Dissatisfied with the high cost and limited selection of organic food available in this area, From the Ground Up was launched in March 2010 as a not for profit community association supported by volunteers who have a shared passion for safe, quality food produced by ethical farming practices. Stephanie Hofielen, manager of FGU and resident of New Malden, believes “healthier food should be affordable and accessible to everyone rather than a privilege for the few. It was clear from the onset that we wanted to offer our communities the opportunity to buy food that is produced by earth and people friendly practices; local as possible – minimising the food miles; seasonal; and affordable. We offer

They also offer food from ‘near Europe’ suppliers – France, Italy, Spain and Holland – in order to provide a larger and varied selection. Recently the box scheme started offering vegetables grown in Sutton at the Sutton Community Farm – a mere 10 miles from Kingston. Their breads come from one of the few organic bread bakeries in London and they use a local producer of natural preserves, chutneys and cakes.” The original vision has become a success with a robust order rate, a list of over 300 interested customers, an active team of helpers and a collection venue in the heart of Kingston near the Kingston Library (FGU does not deliver). success to “repeat orders from customers who are happy with the quality, prices, service and organisation of From the Ground Up. This together with keeping overhead low by being a collection scheme and a volunteer operation seem to be a winner for FGU.” This Autumn, FGU is also sponsoring several community activities - an edible amble, organic wine tasting and jam making workshops. As a voluntary organisation, From the Ground Up depends on people’s generosity of time and goodwill to keep it going. In turn, it provides a great ‘roll up your shirtsleeves’ hands-on experience working for a community food initiative. It is also looking to partner with schools, community groups or churches in New Malden who are interested in helping deliver organic food locally. Happy Birthday to Groves Residential

businesses

by Nikki McGibbon

It seems unbelievable that it has been a whole year since the doors of Groves Residential first opened, offering a professional yet friendly service to Vendors, Applicants and Landlords. It has been a very exciting year for all of us seeing first-hand the ups and downs of running our own business and we were especially delighted that the Mayor Councillor Patrick Codd and his wife Mrs Susan Codd agreed to come and help us celebrate our anniversary. We are grateful for the support and help we have received from numerous sources enabling us to grow and develop our business especially Tony from Chiccos and Andy at Suttles. Our Lettings and Management department has grown dramatically over our first year and we believe

this is because all our management queries are dealt with in our New Malden office so there is always someone on hand to help. On the sales side, we have benefitted from a strong marketing strategy and many personal recommendations. Although we have lived in the area for 15 years, and therefore know a lot about the nurseries, schools and the high street, we have learnt many more interesting and varied facts about different areas of New Malden and individual properties through meeting the local residents. We are looking forward to what the next year brings. VVoice

This home-made fudge is a delicious sweet treat that kids will love and is great for a Hallowe’en treat. You can replace the cherries with raisins, chopped stem ginger or chopped nuts.

450g (1lb) granulated sugar 75g (3oz) butter 150ml (¼pt) milk 170g can evaporated milk 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 100g (4oz) glace cherries, chopped Makes approx 550g (1¼lb) Place the sugar in a large heavy-based pan with the butter, milk and evaporated milk. Heat gently, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil, without stirring, and continue to boil until the mixture reaches 116C/240F on a sugar thermometer (see tip). Stir the boiling mixture occasionally to prevent

colour. Quickly pour the mixture into a greased 18cm (7in) square shallow cake tin. Leave until almost set then mark into squares. When completely cold, cut or break into the squares. Store the fudge in an airtight container.

TOP TIP - If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, place a jug of very cold water by the hob. After boiling the fudge mixture for about 5 minutes, drop a teaspoonful of the hot syrup into the water. If the syrup forms a ball which you can roll between your fingers then its ready – if not, boil for a further few minutes then test again. VVoice

Wayside gardens

community

by Robin Gill

Kingston Upon Thames Council are actively looking for groups of members of the public, to take over the planting and maintenance of some of the wayside gardens in the New Malden area. These areas are currently maintained by the Environmental Services and four possible sites have been identified in the “adopt a plot scheme”. These are at the Amberwood Rise junction with Motspur Park (currently planted with mainly sunflowers and marigolds, there are also two small trees and a hedge running the length of the bed).Voewood Close (this is presently planted with mainly rose bushes, and several trees). Malden Green Avenue junction with Malden Road (This is a large site with grass, mature trees and bushes, with shrubs and roses).

Finally, Bodley Road close to the A3 Roundabout (This area is currently unplanted with two mature trees at one end).

The council would like any applicants to be aware that they are looking for the sites to kept on a low maintenance level. Not only does this mean the area would not become a physical and /or financial burden on the interested party, but also in case the area has to be returned to the authorities for upkeep. Whilst the council does not have a dedicated planting budget some shrubs could be available at certain times of the year, for example after the Hampton Court and Chelsea

Flower Shows. If you are an individual who is interested, please apply as there may be others like minded, with whom you could form a group.

This proposal does not mean that these areas, and other public gardens will not be maintained by the council to the same high standard, should no interested parties come forward. If the idea proves successful, the council are currently running a plan called “Capital Growth” where support is offered to groups who wish to create a community garden, and this may be extended to include wayside gardens. in September, leaving a few to produce seed for sowing next year. But now I’m faced with one of my least favourite jobs: cutting away dying stems and crispy foliage from their canes - and then dismantling the supports themselves, with all their fiddly bits of twine to remove. I usually leave the roots of beans in the ground as they are beneficial to the soil, but this year I’m going to try lifting one or two of the best croppers to pot up for an early start next spring.

by Libby Rothwell “Well, that’s me done for this year”, commented a fellow plot holder recently. He’s not alone: there’s definitely an end-of-year feeling on the site. We’ve reached a turning point in the gardening year now. Once the last of the summer crops have been gathered and the days shorten, you have a choice: hibernate for the winter (how sensible!), or, for those of us who can’t survive without an allotment fix, get round to all those jobs you didn’t have time for when things were in full swing. Weeding the beds is a priority. Some people find it therapeutic, but for me it’s like housework: a bit of a chore but at least you can see a difference when it’s done. We picked the last of the runner beans and sweet peas

If you needed proof that Nature abhors a vacuum, leave a newly cleared patch of ground open to the elements.A green manure such as grazing rye sown now will soon cover any bare soil, choking weed seedlings and providing a living blanket which can be cut and dug in to feed the plot in early spring.

Another way to build up soil fertility is to apply a thick layer of well-rotted compost. Any weeds that do appear on the crumbly surface --and they will—can be easily hoed off if not allowed to get too big. The problem is how to make enough of the stuff. Like spinach, composted material shrinks as it cooks ; I have a total of ten large compost ‘pens’ made from old pallets and it’s still not enough for all the beds on my plots! Some colleagues have found a way round this by applying fresh manure (delivered to the site for free ) directly to empty beds, leaving it to rot down in situ. Experts advise against this method as the decaying process temporarily depletes nitrogen levels in the soil but if the ground isn’t replanted until the following spring, a handful of quickacting fertiliser such as chicken manure pellets should remedy any shortfall.

The unheated greenhouse was a godsend for bringing on the tomatoes, especially as outdoor varieties were slow to ripen after a disappointingly dull August. I’ll be sowing hardy lettuce in there this month, interspersed with spring onions, perpetual spinach and cauliflower. Then I can relax with a nice cup of tea in the shed. When I’ve cleared out the shed, of course. VVoice

Amazing Autumn Colour

gardening

by Pippa Greenwood

Autumn colour has the ability to make me go weak at the knees. I love it....just as the temperatures are dropping and things can become dull and gloomy, your garden develops a new potential – to be positively glowing with fantastic foliage colour. Autumn is a great time to plant trees and shrubs and as the plants are showing their beautiful colours, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting. Plants for vertical surfaces: Vitis coignetiae – a rampant grower, the heartshaped leaves may measure 25-30cm across and their splendid scarlet and crimson colours are un-missable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. Colours are especially good if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia - commonly known as the Virginia creeper, it’s another sizeable climber, and this also offers a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used on walls without a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow tall so may need trimming. Parthenocissus henryana - a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much more restrained. In autumn the leaves turn from a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining to rich shades of red. Shrubs: Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub, covered with scented creamy white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. The foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free soil. Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring. The leaves change from a coppery colour to

46

Please remember to mention the

bright green to one huge mass of fiery colours in autumn. Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn show stoppers, and for smaller gardens you find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows. They do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkish–orange or purple with a bright display in autumn. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke. If your garden soil is waterlogged now, then wait a week or more until it is in better condition before planting. If the soil is dry, it will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots will need to be kept moist. Always check the potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering. Then sit back and enjoy your own bit of autumnal magic! Make veg growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your veg plants from www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May at a great time for planting and then Pippa will email you every week about what you’re growing – lots of tips and help, ensuring great results. It’s great value with various pack sizes available, eg up to 66 plants plus 6 packets of seed for just £39.00, plus that weekly advice. VVoice

The joy of holidays

diary

it, at least until the next day when the wrist is swollen and child refuses to take part in the Ultimate Wipeout, a water-based assault course.

by Ian Duncan “Holidays are an expensive trial of strength. The only satisfaction comes from survival.” Jonathan Miller So, you managed to pack the car without threatening to divorce each other, survived the holiday traffic, arrived at the correct destination with all the appropriate members of the family and, miraculously, the sun is shining. You breathe a big sigh of relief, fire up the first barbeque of the holiday and crack open a bottle of the local brew (will it be Baa-tender’s Best, Golden Fleece or Shepherd’s ruin - no prizes for guessing that we holidayed in the West Country home to many sheep) while the children dash off to the playground. All you can hear is the buzzing of insects and the unknotting of neck muscles; all is right with the world. Then this rural idyll is broken by the sound of screaming: daughter number two has fallen off the monkey bars. So we do what any responsible parent would do – ignore

Half day closing With the “local” A&E being an hour’s drive from holiday idyll we opt for the relatively nearby MIU (that’s Minor Injuries Unit to the uninitiated) only thirty minutes away. The wait is relatively short, the staff lovely (and they even greet with a stereotypical “What’s wrong with you my lovely”) and the diagnosis what we’d expected “It looks like a broken wrist but unfortunately it’s half day closing for the x-ray department so we can’t tell you for sure”. Okay we’ll come back in the morning, except then it’s full day closing for the x-ray department but you can go to the aforementioned local A&E where the waiting time is only four hours although they recommend you wait until the morning when it will be less busy. While questioning the sanity of a system which allows an injury unit to operate without an x-ray unit we decide to wait.

Daughter pay another one pound eighty pence for the privilege of number two now complete with a (half) plaster cast continuing to wait for our long overdue appointment. and the need to arrange an appointment at our local An hour and twenty minutes we are ushered in to the fracture clinic. clinic where we, you’ve guessed it, sit in a cubicle to wait still longer or a doctor to be told that daughter number So, on our return we dutifully arrive five minutes two does indeed have a broken wrist and needs a full before our appointment time. Unfortunately so do half plaster! Great staff but rubbish system with the only the children in the Royal Borough of Kingston. Our silver lining that daughter gets to choose the colour of appointment time comes and goes and after we’ve been her plaster (purple) and the sparkles impregnated in it waiting for half an hour, a disinterested looking clerk (red). By the way, the wrist is fully mended and daughter was slightly sad that she didn’t have the purple sparkly cast to show off at school.

Your Home PC

PS – Put it away Perhaps it’s because we actually had a few sunny days this summer that I noticed that that big yellow orb does strange things to the minds of more and more British men, young and old, and make them think that it’s fine to wander around without a shirt on. Even if you spend hours in the gym and have abs like David Beckhams’, dismiss the thought and save it for your summer holiday: beach in Spain = okay, New Malden High Street = not. If the nearest you’ve been to a six-pack was beverages aisle of your local supermarket don’t even contemplate it – there was a reason clothes were invented. VVoice
