Malden Emergency First Aid Society (MEFAS) With over 44 years of voluntary service to the community, this fantastic local organisation consists solely of volunteers The Kingston Upon Thames Civil Defence Corps was based in New Malden and when the Corps was disbandment in 1968 the volunteers formed MEFAS. Later that year the National Voluntary Civil Aid Services (NVCAS) was formed consisting of over 200 former Civil Defence groups. MEFAS continued to represent Kingston Upon Thames and became a Civil Aid Unit. With this dual role, MEFAS specialised in providing First Aid training to the public whilst its members trained in light rescue and disaster recovery techniques. Today, MEFAS is still based in New Malden having moved from behind the old Town Hall to Blagdon Road and, after giving up its own premises allow the swimming pool to be built, moved into the rear of the Malden Centre. Though the Malden Centre was built over 20 years ago, research has found that the population of New Malden and Kingston Upon Thames generally, are not aware of

the services that MEFAS offers or where it is based. MEFAS’s management committee decided to change its image (new logos) and activities. In future, MEFAS will be offering more commercial courses eg Emergency First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid and, CPR and AED, which are either HSE compliant or certified Life Long Learning skills Levels 1 and 2. Due to new regulations brought in by the Quality Care Commission which covered ambulances used for First Aid cover at events in the same manner as a fleet of front line ambulances, it was decided to part with the MEFAS ambulance. The registration fee of £1,500 and usage restriction meant it was no longer on cost effective to maintain an ambulance. Nevertheless, MEFAS continues to provide First Aid cover at events using hirers own or mobile facilities. For example, providing

If new members are not found , in sufficient numbers the Charity will either fold or be subsumed into another charity within the next 10 years. It was decided that MEFAS should specialise in promoting MEFAS as a commercial training organisition and MEFAS trainers choose to qualifying with NUCO Training Plus and First Aid Awards. Was your child at Learning Land? 10 years ago, the unused and unloved sports pavilion in Beverley Park was suddenly again filled with the sound of children laughing (as well as babies crying!!) as a new pre-school nursery for New Malden (then known as ‘Learning Land’) was opened. Filling a much needed gap for additional nursery care for the growing number of working mums and dads in the area, Learning Land – founded by Estelle James, who still manages the business today – provided a safe, fun and homely environment for around 18 children aged from 3 months up until school age. So now, a decade later, many of the first babies to ever attend the “nursery in the Park” as it is fondly known, are now growing up fast and preparing to leave primary school! And to mark this milestone, local mum, Helena Rebello (whose eldest son was one of the first to join Learning

Land in 2002, closely followed by his two younger brothers) is organising a celebratory picnic in Beverley Park on Sunday September 9th, 3pm – 5pm. Helena says: “All of the parents whose children attended Estelle’s nursery over the years have such fond memories. Nativity plays, teddy bears picnics, outside games and storytimes . But above all, wonderful care from all of the lovely ‘girls’ who work there - as well as the lifelong friendships that have been forged among both the children and parents.” Helena adds; “It’s really tough when you have to leave your little one for the first time – and many of us remember shedding tears as we walked down Dukes Avenue towards the station for our first day back at work after maternity leave. But knowing our children were in such safe hands and having such fun made it all the more bearable and we all want to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the nursery by holding an extra-special picnic in September.” Any former parents, children or staff from Learning Land (now called First Insight to Learning) Day Nursery, are invited to attend the picnic (to be held on the grass outside the nursery). Past parents and children from as far away as Shropshire are coming back to New Malden for the event, so everyone is welcome! For more information, please contact Helena on 07958 077423

All the world’s a stage by Robin Gill Janey Sevilla Callander had an unfortunate start in life. Born in 1846 at Craigforth House in Stirling, her mother died when Janey was only twelve days old, probably from complications surrounding the birth. Her father remarried the following year, but Janey’s stepmother also died young (aged 23) in 1849 when Janey was aged three. Her father (James Henry Callander), died at the beginning of 1851 when Janey was five years old making her, her two elder sisters, and two younger brothers orphans. Heart’s desires The three girls were made wards of the Duke of Argyll as there was a family connection, and had a very privileged upbringing. The Duke’s second son Lord Archibald was the same age as Janey, and as they had grown up together since the age of five, it was not surprising that they became close, and with the family’s blessing they married in 1869.

The couple spent the first few years living in Liverpool, where Archie worked as a cotton broker. They also maintained a house in London, where their two children were born. Their circumstances changed dramatically when, Archibald’s elder brother John married Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter in 1871, and the Campbells found themselves mixing with royalty. Archibald was also then invited to become a partner of Coutts Bank in London in 1874. This obviously meant the family had to move from Liverpool to London. They stayed at Beaufort Gardens in Brompton until 1882, when they moved to Coombe Hill Farm on Coombe Lane (now the site of Coombe Hill Infants and Junior Schools). The house was built about 1650 and contained a dining room, drawing room, library, eight bedrooms, kitchens, cellars, and offices. It had “extensive pleasure grounds and gardens” a three acre paddock, and another garden/greenhouse. Stabling was provided with loose boxes and coach house. The fact it was close to both Malden and Norbiton stations meant that travelling to and from London was convenient. Laid on with a trowel They quickly settled in, putting their mark on the property. The family were great friends with the painter James Whistler who was a frequent visitor to the house. They had helped him financially and socially both in Liverpool, and London. Whistler designed a trellis for the Campbell’s new house, and his exacting specifications for construction proved troublesome for the local craftsmen. The interior of the house was lacquered in red sealing wax throughout the hall and dining room and the walls were covered with artists’ canvas on which Lord and Lady Archibald painted images from their imagination. The hall displayed visions of knights and boar hunts, and the dining room revealed flamingos and the sea. Another room had golden dolphins swimming in blue waves. The most spectacular room was the parlour which had been painted by Lady Archibald; the room was covered with irises of many different colours and sizes, Whistler had helped her out with ideas and even used a brush himself. The curtains were made of silk and coloured rose pink, and the room was full of shells and coral from all over the world. The gardens were planted with flowers and shrubs roses, jasmine, clematis, and wisteria planted in the forms of bowers and arcades. Through these cloisters of flowers lay an orchard, the greenhouses, fruit and vegetable patches,

and a large paddock, before you reach the cornfields which led down to New Malden about two miles away. Under the greenwood tree Many of Lady Archibald’s society friends were invited down to Coombe and during the summer months walks were taken through the woods of the estates nearby. It was during one of these walks in 1883 that the idea of staging part of Shakespeare’s play was discussed between Lady Archibald and an American actress Eleanor Calhoun. After a year’s planning this was to become the first “pastoral play” to be produced in Europe for many years. Most of the original play takes place in the “Forest Of Arden” and for this the forest of Coombe (Coombe Woods) was used. Pastoral plays are open air productions using natural elements as scenery etc, and with the nearby facility of Coombe Farm the goats could also be used as woodland animals together with deerhounds. The play was staged on 22nd and 23rd July 1884 in grounds adjoining Coombe House at 2.30pm. The house itself had opened as a hydropathical establishment four years earlier, and had been frequented by many patients from London society. The audience which included amongst its number the Prince and Princess Of Wales (later Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the Crown Prince of Germany (later the Kaiser) and Oscar Wilde sat in a glade in the woods on raised benches sheltered by overhanging lime trees. The sides of the “theatre” were represented by green drapes hanging from the boughs of the trees, while the curtain dropped onto the forest floor instead of being raised, at the start of the performance. The stage was a long and winding glade of tall lime trees, with a large separate tree centre stage where most of the performers were grouped. The actors were a mixture of professionals and amateurs, with even the cook at Coombe Hill Farm playing a part (Audrey) for which she was praised by Oscar Wilde. Lady Archibald played the part of Orlando, and received more admiration for her costume than her acting, but the performance in general was so well received that an extra day was added, and the charity (Princess Louise Home in Poplar) greatly benefitted. Most of the praise from the critics was for the idea and conception behind the event. “Through an alley of white hawthorn and gold laburnum, we passed into the green pavilion that served as the theatre, the air sweet with odour of the lilac, and with the blackbird’s song. When the curtain fell into its trench of flowers and the play commenced we saw before us a real forest”. The following year (1885) the “Pastoral Players” as they became known decided to repeat their performance of “As You Like It” together with a production of “The Faithfull Shepherdesse” by John Fletcher. “As You Like It” which was encored from the previous year at the end of May and beginning of June, attracted over four hundred spectators at a guinea (£1 5pence) each, and the performance of Lady Archibald received warm applause. A new production later in the month, and early July called

14

“The Faithfull Shepherdesse” required a cast of 34 extras dressed as Greek shepherds and their female equivalents, plus an orchestra of 40, together with most of the sheep and lambs from Coombe Farm. It was more of an elaborate poem than a play complete with priests, satyrs and river gods. The Saturday performance attracted Princes and Princesses, Dukes and Duchesses, Earls and Countesses, together with actors including Sarah Bernhardt and Lillie Langtry, stage managers, and theatre critics. After the final Saturday performance, the Prince and Princess Of Wales and their children together the full cast were invited to have tea on the lawn of Coombe Hill Farm. They were still dressed in costume. It must have been quite a sight as they all made their way along the road (Coombe Lane) from Coombe House to the farm. This was the last performance at Coombe. The Pastoral Players performed other plays at Cannizaro Park, and at Alexander Pope’s residence at Twickenham in later years; they even had an offer to perform at Stratford which they were unable to take up. The Campbells carried on living at Coombe Hill Farmhouse until Lady Archibald’s death there in 1923 (her husband had died ten years previous). She was quite a character, noted as the best female bagpipe player in Scotland, she championed the divided skirt in royal circles, was one of the first ladies to master the

bicycle, and was instrumental in teaching Princess Alexandra how to drive. Oscar Wilde described her as” the Moon Lady, the beautiful wraith with her beryl eyes”. Coombe Hill Farm a listed building was demolished in 1969, after the land was labelled for use for educational purposes, and the following year saw the building of the Coombe Hill schools. A Lower Slower World – The New Normal? After ten years of fat, welcome to the ten years of lean. The good news is that we are three years in: the bad news is that we still have probably another seven years to go. So welcome to the ‘New Normal’ of lower slower growth, where both government and personal debt is slowly unwound and investment returns seem miserly. In effect, we are living through a period of financial repression, where the usual rules of risk and return have changed. So what can investors do? In real terms, investors in government bonds or cash deposits are losing value after taking account of inflation, and mattress stuffing is not to be recommended. The answer still lies in a well balanced portfolio of

different assets spread around the globe, carefully managed to avoid the risks and trying to grow at a steady, albeit slower, rate. Now though, in the puritan world of the ‘New Normal’, returns are going to be meagre and sparse and costs, once hidden, now stick out like rocks from the sea, ready to rip out the value from unwary investment portfolios. Time then for some serious redesigning of portfolios to strip out unnecessary costs, without losing the vital structure and discipline of a well constructed investment account. Over the past few years, the introduction of various types of passives - be they Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in all their various forms, or Trackers - have provided a lower cost access for investment managers. Previously the preserve of the institutional investment world, they have broken out into the air of greater popular awareness. However, this is just the start. Firstly, look to the trading and dealing. A good dealer can narrow or get inside the spread, a better dealer will locate the right market to find a better price (for example Paris). Then there is the power of scale which can be beneficial - size counts. Initially, this may be in terms of negotiating a better Annual Management Charge (AMC) for the fund where

possible, but also then to evaluate at what point is it worth by-passing the ETF or Tracker provider altogether and just buying baskets of the underlying stocks themselves? In effect this pulls down the AMC to zero on that part of the portfolio. Such actions all add up to small amounts of percentages nibbling away at the total costs. For the ‘New Normal’ we need new thinking and new rules.

September It’s September, and as we move into autumn, take a moment on Saturday 15th to gaze up at a sky that has become a battlefield. Thousands of feet above you an armada of German bombers drones sluggishly towards London, while swarms of Spitfires and Messerschmitt 109s play what looks from down here like a deadly game of tag. For this is not 2012 but 1940; and the Luftwaffe, believing the RAF beaten, has turned its attention from airfields and aircraft factories to industrial cities. But the battle you see overhead is the last of its kind. More than 1,500 aircraft of both sides are engaged

in thrusts and parries that will last all day. Fighter Command is strong enough to stop the bombers getting through and to inflict heavy losses. From now on the Luftwaffe will give up costly daylight raids and turn instead to night bombing. The Battle of Britain is over. The Blitz has begun. And Britain is safe from invasion. Imagine the relief people must have felt when the Battle of Britain was won and the threat was averted. Not a bit of it! Operation Sealion had only been postponed, not cancelled. Britain had slaved all summer to strengthen its inadequate defences, and the work had to continue at the same breakneck pace. There was still, as General Brooke noted in his diary, the danger that Hitler had a surprise to spring: invasion fever had to be maintained! With hindsight it’s clear that there never was much actual danger. Hitler’s tiny navy, his landing-craft improvised from Rhine barges, his air force of tactical

bombers and short-range fighters, his negligible logistical tail, could never have mounted a large-scale amphibious operation against an enemy that grew stronger by the day. But to Churchill, maintaining the fear of invasion was essential in order to head off the peace party led by his Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax. Under Chamberlain, Halifax had already approached Mussolini to act as an intermediary with Hitler; in the Cabinet meetings of May 1940, even as the Dunkirk evacuations were beginning, he proposed to try again and was only very narrowly defeated. Churchill believed that peace would mean virtual slavery. Popular enthusiasm for the war had to be kept up at all costs. He was first buoyed by a surge of 1,500,000 volunteers for the Home Guard, formed on 14th May only four days after he took office; but Dunkirk, the Italian declaration of war on 10th June, and the French armistice on 22nd June weakened his hand. His answer was to mobilise Britain and keep it mobilised. The south and east coasts were mined and wired. “Non-essential” civilians were evacuated from Kent and Essex. Romney Marsh was flooded. 28,000 concrete pill-boxes and 50,000 “fougasses” (petrolbased IEDs), were installed along 50 “stop lines” formed of hundreds of miles of anti-tank ditches 18ft deep and 11ft wide. Sockets just big enough for an anti-tank mine were dug in road surfaces. Bridges were wired and road-signs removed. The pace kept up well into 1941 when local invasion committees were formed and flame barrages were developed to defend the beaches. People watched the work going on and if the defences were real, then the threat must be too. Only in June 1941 when Hitler attacked Russia were invasion preparations scaled down. But it’s odd to reflect, all these years later, that Corporal Jones’s trusty cold steel was aimed not so much at Hitler as Lord Halifax.

Recipe - Lamb and Aubergine Curry over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil. Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey. • 3 tbsp sunflower oil • 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • 400g sieved tomatoes • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all

TIP You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Eucalyptus tree management These trees have proved to be very popular in our gardens, this article looks at the characteristics of these trees and the necessary management measures to control the rapid growth rates. The native areas of the world where Eucalyptus trees originate are mainly Australia covering a wide range of species adapted to the contrasting climate from the northern tropics of Queensland to the temperate zone of Tasmania. The tree has a multitude of forms varying from the rounded blue green leaves of a Silver gum to taller Mountain gum with its blue green slender leaves.

These trees are fast growers so caution is necessary when choosing one for your garden, for example the Mountain gum can reach a height of 30m!, lesser heights are achieved with the Spinning gum or Urn gum. The attraction of these trees are the lower density foliage compared to other evergreen trees such as Holly or Bay trees ,in addition the bark of the tree can be very interesting with numerous colour variations possible. The trees do produce a high litter release in the autumn which breaks down very slowly so it is advised to rake up and compost the foliage. The Eucalyptus tree does have 2 key hazards that require monitoring or management. Firstly, the tree has a tendency to drop limbs at random even in low wind conditions!!. To assess the potential threat look for the longer limbs on the tree, it is these branches which create the most movement especially if they have a dense foliage cover creating a large “sail” area to the wind. These limbs can be reduced to growth

points drastically reducing the threat of breaking. In an ideal scenario it is best to complete a full crown reduction every 4 or 5 years; where the tree is close to a property a more severe pollard may be required to control both rootplate growth and subsequent alterations to the local water table. Secondly, the stability of the rootplate can create problems especially on clay based soils where a period of persistent rain is followed by windy conditions. Clay based soils create a potential slippage plane between the soil and rootplate base. Eucalyptus trees are characterised by a surfaced based rootplate whereby an extensive width of roots achieves support to the tree as opposed to other tree species that develop a deep root system to carry the weight of the tree mass. Where the centre of mass of your tree is off centre or where the rootplate surface appears to be lifting on one side of the tree then get a qualified arborist to do a free inspection for you. As with all trees a regular health check is advised, we have a guide page on our website which is a useful first assessment guide. In conclusion despite the concerns over managing these trees they can provide an attractive aesthetic addition to your garden. Roger Kerr RJ Tree Services

Tea Break Gossip! Yvonne, Barbara and Simonne all go to the General Painting and Drawing class on a Thursday morning at the Malden Centre. It’s a friendly group, that exchanges information on everything from adopting hedgehogs to double glazing as well as the best place to buy art materials and opinions on the latest exhibitions. A typical morning might go as follows: Barbara: I didn’t get as much painting done this week as I’d have liked, because I was watching Wimbledon. Simonne: How do the players cope with all the heat and humidity? Tutor: Because they’re young and fit. And they’ll all suffer from arthritis in old age. Yvonne: Not if they do Pilates, they won’t. Yvonne likes Pilates because it makes her feel good, and if she didn’t go to a class she suspects she wouldn’t do it at all. She has been attending classes at the Malden Centre for two years, since she retired – she’s known about the Centre’s existence for a long time. “It feels as though it’s always been there, and my daughter used to attend it for various things…” She’s also been to a class on the history of Surrey, and thinks that one of the big contributing factors towards her enjoyment is how nice everyone is. She enjoys painting watercolours “even if they don’t turn out very well!” and thinks that what she learns in class definitely contributes to what she achieves at home. Barbara does tap dancing as well as art, and she’s progressed from Beginners to Improvers in the space of two terms! She’s done a lot of different forms of dance over the years, including belly dancing (at the Malden Centre), and tap was one she hadn’t tried. Her interest in art stems from the pottery course she did at the Centre, which has its own wheels and kiln; it was then that she decided her pot-painting could do with some improvement. She likes the fact that she can either do the topic suggested by the tutor, or her own thing, and she gets plenty of technical advice. Her work has become more three-dimensional as a result. A real plus in the Centre’s favour is the lack of paperwork the students are required to complete, which means that the tutor’s time is spent on teaching rather than form-filling. Simonne does Spanish and swimming as well as the art class, and she’s done calligraphy in the past. She enjoys Spanish because it’s a small class, with plenty of individual attention. She started art because it was something to do, and has discovered she’s rather good at it. For her, too, one of Malden Centre’s attractions

30

is that you don’t have to write a thesis about why you want to study a particular subject, nor meet endless learning goals which bear little relevance to the topic. She wanted activities to keep her brain busy and her body healthy, and Malden Centre provides all of this. Simonne: This violin is really difficult to draw. Barbara: I suspect that learning to play it would be easier than trying to paint it. Tutor:You mustn’t fret about it. Getting strung out makes it all the harder. Simonne: And the bad jokes are all part of the experience… Tutor: It is learning for pleasure, after all! The Better Life The Better Life is the tales and observations of a London townie, who downshifted to Cornwall. A bit like the Good Life, but with the internet. It all started one morning in the kitchen, when Anne asked, “How would you feel about keeping chickens?” I didn’t answer right away. In the time we’ve been together I’ve learned the language of subtext. I finished my breakfast and replied, “When are we picking them up?” I wasn’t entirely averse to the idea of a little selfsufficiency. Who doesn’t have fond memories of The Good Life - and especially Felicity Kendal? Plus it’d be a chance to shed my townie upbringing and dispel that grim story my dad used to tell - the one about dispatching a chicken for the first and only time, where the head came off in in his hands and the headless chicken ran up the path. Stage one in Operation Chickadee was researching coops and chicken feed and, well, chickens really. There’s a lot to learn about chicken behaviour, the different breeds and their foibles. Having taken advice, we decided on hybrids, as they’re more reliable for eggs and point-oflay birds for immediate production. New Malden’s Village Voice successfully provides a platform for community information on a level and in a way that had not been achieved before. Here at last was a high class, good quality, highly readable product that appeals to people, businesses, churches, clubs, charities and other organisations. Jenny has applied her consummate skills to provide something for everyone. The Village Voice is a must for advertisers and I can speak from experience. If you want to get the community's attention the Village Voice does it for you and gets results. Few would argue that our community in New Malden, through Village Voice, has regained its pride and community spirit in being what it has always affectionately been referred to down through the years - namely "The Village" Mick Taviner

We went upmarket with the coop, choosing an easy care metal and plastic affair from Omlet (yes, really!). Now all we needed to do was find the right chickens - and Anne was already on the case. The day after the chicken coop and run were installed in the front garden, we entered the mysterious world of farm supplies. Layers pellets, grit (for strong shells), straw and worming treatment - check. However, my suggestion that we buy jodhpurs as well fell on stony ground. Having located a poultry supplier, we headed out with an empty cat box and a pile of newspaper. The farmer led us to a densely populated barn and said, “Take your pick.” I don’t know exactly how Anne chose the chickens - which the farmer insisted were hens - but we went home with Sweet Pea (a Plymouth Rock / Maran) and Pepperami (a Plymouth Rock / Rhode Island). The chickens were confined to barracks for a few days, to allow them to settle in and retrain the cat. Once they emerged, we noted the following: At least an egg a day!

A huge reduction in the snail population. Sweet Pea failed to live up to her name, went broody and took it out on the cat (luckily it’s a very fast cat). The garden quickly came to resemble The Somme. Something had to be done because, unlike me, Anne is a passionate gardener. Plus, the round up in the evenings was time consuming. We fenced off one half of the garden and, after a few ‘great escapes’, augmented the fencing with extra bamboo canes in leaf, whereupon the chickens looked as if they were starring in their own episode of Tenko. Sweet Pea and Pepperami were both restful to watch and very entertaining. They performed chicken yoga wing stretching exercises. They played tug-of-war with snails and ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ tussles over worms, morning porridge and, on one unfortunate occasion, a wood mouse. Our neighbours relish the availability of fresh, local eggs and they enjoy the egg-laying serenade every morning. And the poultry poop makes great compost. No chickens were harmed in the making of this feature. My dad would be proud. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. Did you get the volunteering ‘bug’ from watching the Olympics? If like me, you spent the two weeks of the Olympics in August glued to the TV and admiring not only all the efforts of the competitors but also all those wonderful volunteers, or ‘Game Makers’ as they were called, perhaps you have been inspired to do some volunteering too? So read on! Cards for Goods Causes (CFGC) is the largest multicharity Christmas card organisation in the UK selling charity Christmas cards for more than 300 charities in around 300 locations from the Channel Islands to Pitlochry. Over the last 5 years charities have received £20 million from their card sales. The inspiration for Cards for Good Causes came in 1959 when a group of charities met to discuss the coordination of publicity for selling their cards at Christmas. Some of those founder charities still work with CFGC today. We keep our infrastructure simple and efficient, and strive to keep our operating costs as low as possible

to maximise the amount of money each charity (or its trading subsidiary) receives from its card sales. Our band of volunteers, who return year after year, are key to this. So how about helping us in our local shop in Kingston? The shop is in All Saint’s Parish Church and will open this year on Saturday 20 October. We trade from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Saturday. Cards are sold on behalf of over 40 charities, including local guest charities Princess Alice Hospice, Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice, the Royal Marsden Cancer Fund and the Royal Star & Garter Home. We also sell a range of Christmas Goods, including advent calendars and wrapping paper and gift tags. We always welcome more volunteers, and customers, so if you think you can spare a few hours each week during November and December why not give me a call – Su Anstey on 0208 330 1893 or email me on su.anstey@cfgc.org.uk Cards for Good Causes Limited pays the participating charities (or their trading subsidiaries) at least 75p in every pound from their card sales, less the VAT payable on the amount retained by CFGC. The retained amount covers CFGC’s costs of running the temporary charity Christmas card shops. In addition to these costs, the participants have to pay for the production and distribution of their cards.

Sarah Spencer was born in New Malden and lived here until her early twenties. She started playing on the British New Orleans Music scene at the age of 18; was the youngest visitor to play in Preservation Hall, New Orleans at 19; and formed the first of her own bands, the Rue Conti, at 20. Shortly after GHB Records of New Orleans, Louisiana purchased the American rights to the Rue Conti's cd, "Laissez Les Bons Temps Roulez", Sarah moved to America. Since then, she has made numerous guest appearances around the world, recorded over twenty compact discs, and appeared at festivals around the world, including playing at the Purcell Room of the Royal Festival Hall in London. Sarah leads a band in the USA and makes annual visits back to the UK to play with her British band – Sarah Spencer's Transatlantic Band – which consists of some of the best-known and most experienced musicians in Great Britain who play New Orleans style music. On Saturday, 15th September, Sarah and the Transatlantic Band will be appearing at the New Malden Methodist Church to perform an evening of gospel music and spirituals in the New Orleans tradition.

A Man in Macau It’s been a case of never giving up for a New Malden woman who has finally seen a dream come true with the publication of her first novel. Esther-Margaret Hood began writing “A Man in Macau” in 1993, but it is only now, some 19 years later, that she has finally got her story into print. “There were times I thought it would never happen,” she said. “If it hadn’t been for a combination of friends’ encouragement and nagging, I don’t think I would ever have finished the book, much less got it published.” The novel is set in the Far East during the 1980s, when EstherMargaret lived and worked in Hong Kong. However, her fascination with the region had actually begun years before when she was a teenager; in 1968, her father had come home from a visit to Hong Kong with photographs and descriptions which grabbed her imagination. It was the

beginning of a life-long love affair with the area. “I just made up my mind I would get there,” she said. “And when I did, I wasn’t disappointed. After I finally came back to live in England, in 1992, I wanted to write about life in the Far East as I had experienced it – I wanted to describe a place which wasn’t all cheap trinkets or rich tycoons.” “A Man in Macau” is a story of mistaken identity and the story’s characters take the reader to places throughout Hong Kong and over the Pearl river estuary to the-then Portuguese enclave of Macau. “I think most novelists have a story which they then put into a setting,” said EstherMargaret. “For me, it was the other way round. I had a place I wanted to describe so I devised a story to fit it.” Esther-Margaret, who lives in Cavendish Avenue, was brought up in Lancashire and after leaving school in Bolton, she trained as a journalist on the Fylde coast. Subsequently, she worked her way around the world, with lengthy stints in Hong Kong and Sydney, before returning to Blackpool. In 1985, she moved out to Hong Kong to work for newspapers including the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Standard. Esther-Margaret has two sons. Tom, who was born in Hong Kong, is now a student at Kingston University and works part-time in a pub. Her younger son, George, has just left school and is heading to Liverpool University to study archaeology after taking a gap year. Both boys attended Burlington Junior School and Coombe Boys School in New Malden. Whilst her sons were at the school, Esther-Margaret was a parent-governor at Coombe Boys. Now she works as a teaching assistant at Holy Cross School. So why did it take so long to write her story? “I think part of the reason is that I need to know that once I start to write I won’t be interrupted for a good couple of hours,” she says. “With children around, plus their friends, that’s pretty much impossible! At one stage the book was put away for several years. Now, of course, I’m glad I finally got it out again and finished it.” A Man in Macau (Blue Jacaranda Publishing) is available from Amazon or on Kindle.

The Evil Weevil by Pippa Greenwood

The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) will always feature in any gardening poll of ‘top pests’. They’re an immensely successful pest; there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000 eggs during the summer. If you have them in your garden, whether you like it or not, you probably need to get to know better. How Do You Know You Have Vine Weevils? The adult vine weevil is just under 1cm long, matt black with tiny gingery brown flecks on its wing-cases. They’re a classic weevil shape with elbowed antennae and a phenomenal ability to grip on to nearly any surface. You’re likely to notice the notches around the leaf margins before you see the weevil. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually on the lower, most accessible leaves. The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown head. You’ll find them in the compost or soil, close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding on. Unless you’re removing a plant you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it’s when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring. What Do Vine Weevils Attack? Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers. They’re a greater problem on perennial plants and those with fleshier roots or tubers. The adult beetles emerge mostly between March and May, but also at other times in greenhouses. The eggs are dark brown, less than 1mm diameter and are placed close to a suitable host plant. The eggs hatch to produce the creamy coloured grubs which feed and grow until they reach full size. What Can You Do? Try to avoid getting vine weevils in the first place. Check plants, including their roots, carefully for foliage damage before introducing anything new to your garden. Avoid re-using compost in containers as it might contain grubs or eggs, which are impossible to spot. As vine weevils can’t fly, making barriers is relatively easy. Put a ring of non-setting glue around the rim of

52

containers, use a gritty mulch to reduce the number of eggs that are laid and hatch and try creating miniature moats around the legs of greenhouse staging, by standing each leg in a bowl of water.Vine weevils can’t swim and won’t be able to access the plants provided the staging doesn’t touch the sides of the greenhouse. I’m a fan of the biological nematode controls. They’re available from mail order suppliers (including www. pippagreenwood.com) and seed catalogues and are applied as a compost or soil drench. To work effectively, keep the area moist, so that the nematodes can move through the compost to attack the grubs, entering their bodies and producing a bacterial infection to kill them. The nematode controls need to have a soil or compost temperature of 5-21C and work best during August and September. Visit the new products area on Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great selection of products - signed copies of Pippa’s books, Grower Frames, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, delightful terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls and lots, lots more! You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening.

We’ve been bowled over by the response to our recent article in the Village Voice about the Party in the Park! The emails we’ve received have shown what a great and thriving community spirit there is in New Malden – especially during 2012, which is proving to be an exciting and vibrant year to be living in our lovely London suburb! Friendly Breastfeeding Support No doubt you are aware that ‘Breast is Best’ ...but for many mums the challenge of breastfeeding in the early days with their newborn can be a real shock. Having accurate information and practical and emotional support has been shown to be a key factor in helping mums get over the many different challenges that they might face on their breastfeeding journey. Locally, families with young children have a fantastic resource at the New Malden Children’s Centre and among the many wonderful play sessions, messy play, baby massage etc there is also a breastfeeding support group which runs on the 1st Friday of every month. The monthly meetings are run by an accredited La Leche League Leader and is for any pregnant or breastfeeding mum. You don’t even need to have a problem, it’s a great way to meet other breastfeeding mums and to get support and information about any aspect of breastfeeding. You may be experiencing the early day

she hears of a renowned couples specialist (Steve Carell) in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her sceptical husband, a steadfast man of routine, to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy. Just convincing the stubborn Arnold to go on the retreat is hard enough – the real challenge for both of them comes as they shed their hang-ups and try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place. HOPE SPRINGS reunites Streep with David Frankel, director of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. Television producer and writer Vanessa Taylor (‘Alias’, ‘Game of Thrones’) wrote the script, her first for the big screen.

You might have questions about starting solid food or may be looking to the future and finding out your options when you return to work. Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “Camping is nature’s way of promoting the hotel business.” Love it or Hate It People either love or hate camping. I’m afraid I fall into the second category, and two nights recently spent under canvas, sorry high-tech light but breathable, waterproof material, I did nothing to change my mind. Lashings of Ginger Beer I had this romantic view of camping, fuelled by Enid Blyton and the Famous Five. In their adventures, Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timothy the dog sling on their rucksacks and away they go, wandering along sunlit lanes, butterflies floating on the breeze and birds chirruping in the hedgerows. They quickly fling up their tent in a field before buying eggs and bacon from friendly farmers next morning. So I was unprepared for the need the need for methodical forward planning or for the size of vehicle needed to transport all the kit: if you have ever been passed on the motorway by a people carrier with bikes on the roof and a

trailer in tow and wondered what was happening, it was simply a family of four off for a couple of days camping: there are things to sleep in and sleep on. Things to cook in and with. Things to sit on ( I will admit a certain liking for those fold up chairs that have a built in holder for your can of beer). Things to eat with and eat off. And so on. Thankfully, the forecast was for good weather. Fit Grommet A into Flange F2 There were also a couple of things somethings I had forgotten about camping 1. Putting the tent up takes forever: Indeed the length of time it takes is inversely proportional to the amount of daylight. This is because you a) need a degree in astrophysics to understand the instructions and b) left the instructions and mallet on the kitchen table. 2.Except for about two days a year, even after a warm sunny day, English summer evenings are blooming freezing and full of midges and mosquitos. So you have to take the kind of

clothes that wouldn’t be out of place half way up Everest to protect yourself from both frost and insect bite. Probably the only way to approach camping is to be like my wife - totally optimistic and embracing the new experience; to think how ‘lovely it is to hear children running about and enjoying themselves’, and to look forward to eating breakfast alfresco in the morning. However, the trouble with camping is that the morning always takes such a long time to come. Sleep, perchance to dream No, the problem was that communal living involves living with other people. For example, being serenaded first by the local disco and then by “merry” campers returning to the site at 3am. Then there were the early morning risers who seemed programmed to get up at 6am, just because they are camping and it is past dawn. While no one can complain about the wonder of the dawn chorus when it is safely conducted outside double glazed windows, it isn’t quite so marvellous through a few thin sheets of manmade fibre. Somewhere between the tent flaps being zipped up for the night and the first sizzle of sausage in the morning, I must have snatched a total of about four hours’ sleep. Always look on the bright side of life To be fair, things did start to improve, slightly. As the morning progressed, some of the joys of camping began to filter through the deep fog of sleep deprivation. My bacon bap tasted fantastic and my cup of tea was the best

I’ve ever had - as they always is when taken outside. ‘ The babble of children’s laughter’ did truly uplift the heart of this hardened politician. Just then, the weather turned. Gale-force winds whipped up from nowhere, the tent began to flap alarmingly, the guy-ropes straining at their leash and torrential rain poured down for hours. It was still raining when we left just before lunchtime the following day - although the weather forecast were saying the showers were yet to come. (Surely a lot of money could be saved if the Met. Office simply phoned people in different parts of the country and ask them what the weather was like.) So finally, when washing up at the communal sink (what is that all about?) as we prepared to leave, and listening to the rain pounding on the awning, I tried hard to look cheerful and not to keep repeating: ‘You can count me out of this lark next year’. But next year we are going to Disney. • 5.43 million camping trips were made last year, an astonishing increase of twenty nine percent on the year before. Office for National Statistics. • Appearances on wedding lists of camping equipment have increased by forty four percent. John Lewis. • Average trip length was 4.3 nights.VisitEngland (Perhaps this shows that campers really share my view and a third of the way through that last night, decided that they’d had enough and went home
