Dear Readers
So it’s official, spring has sprung at last! The bulbs are sprouting up and at last we are awash with snowdrops and daffodils. The days are getting longer and the temperature just slightly warmer. Although come on….we’re all far too accustomed to the British weather to be lulled into a false sense of security and to dare pack away our winter boots quite yet (let alone, bring out the flip flops!). Easter might be coming early this year (with newspaper reports of an unseasonal, balmy bank holiday weekend) but from my experience we still need to be on our guard for those April showers (and a final flirtation with winter). You can take the girl out of Glasgow but….. However, in my humble opinion (or IMHO for any teenagers reading this month!) April is always a lovely time of the year. As I write, the end of the school Spring term is just a week away, daughter No.2 is getting ready to enter “double digits! (with a fabulously fun 10th birthday party to kick the holidays off with) and the planning meetings are already underway for New Malden’s fortnight of fun later in the Summer (more of that to follow next month!). And, for all of my royalist buddies out there (you know who you are!) there’s also the excitement of a new royal baby to look forward to at the end of the month. What better excuse to get the Jubilee bunting back out of the loft! Spring is also a time for looking forward, thinking about new beginnings and what the future holds. So, I thought it was really apt that the local primary school, where my youngest attends, will be holding a “careers fair” for the Year 5 and 6 pupils at the end of this term. I’m delighted to be attttending and can’t wait to listen to the dreams and ambitions of 120 enthusiastic nine, ten and eleven year olds with the world at their feet. I still haven’t quite decided which profession I will be talking about – editor, journalist, saleswoman, designer, partyplanner, committee-member or general multi-tasker (not to mention the 10 years I spent working at Barclays Stockbrokers before I was lucky enough to arrive in New Malden and start my current business venture)? At least it goes to show that we can all turn our hand to anything, if we really want to! Whatever you’re up to this month, I hope you have a really egg-citing (sorry I had to get just one Easter pun in!) time with friends and family and look forward to seeing you all out and about in the Spring sunshine! I hope you enjoy a good read and also see what our local businesses have to offer. If you’ve any feedback on how they’re doing, or have any ideas for future editions, news or views to share then please get in touch. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC.
Until May, best wishes

People Robin Gill I’m delighted to share the news with you that our very own history writer Robin Gill was recently the proud recipient of a Mayor’s Community Award at the Guildhall. Robin has been writing monthly articles to the Village Voice since 2006 – how he comes up with such interesting content on such a regular basis always amazes me. That’s close to 100 articles!! Robin has also put his research abilities to good use regarding the War Memorial in Malden. He provided the majority of names of those men and women who died serving the British Forces in World War Two. He subsequently discovered a previously
unknown Victoria Cross recipient from the First World War, whose family had lived in the Malden and Coombe area. Robin researched and produced a list of civilians who died in the Malden area in the Second World War. With the help of others (myself included!), a civic service commemorating these citizens was held at Christ Church in 2010 under the banner of ‘Malden Blitz’. All this research has enabled the names of these worthy individuals to be added to the local war memorial. Robin is also a founder member of the Malden and Coombe Heritage Society and has been the secretary of the society since its inception in 2012. Robin was presented with his award by our lovely Mayor Ken Smith who sent me this: Robin got his much deserved award for his work for charity. When reading the application from his sponsor I could only think what a wonderful individual he is. Hours of his spare time each week given freely in order to make someone’s life, who he will never meet, better and bearable. And this over 30 years. A well deserved Mayors award that I found humbling to give.” “Not part of the award but being a reader of the Village Voice over many years I am also so impressed by his contribution on the history of our area without which we would all be the poorer – he has kept us all transfixed and waiting for his next article . I’m sure all readers would like to join with me in congratulating Robin on this worthy Mayors Award . Cllr Ken Smith JP Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

New Malden History You wouldn’t hit a man with glasses! by Robin Gill Henry Weaber was born in London probably around the Covent Garden area in about 1816. His father, who was a tailor, died when Henry was only about five years old. His parents had married in Soho in 1813; Henry had a sister Sarah, and a brother John. He married Mary Ann Weber (rather confusingly) at the Old Church at St Pancras in November 1837. Working in Carlisle Street Soho, he was already a spectacle maker of some repute (an occupation however requiring no professional qualifications), and one of his main customers were CW Dixey. Dixeys were the official optician and mathematical instrument makers to the Queen, Prince Albert and the Prince of Wales, so from the age of 21, Weaber spectacles must have been made to a high standard. The marriage produced five children Caroline (1838), Mary Anne (1840), Henry
(1842), Sarah (1844), and William (1846). By October 1843 Henry had moved his business to the more prominent Oxford Street. Mary Ann (the mother) died in 1847, and Henry married Elizabeth Humphrieson in Marylebone in 1848, by which time he was trading as a working optician at 129 Oxford Street. When the Great Exhibition was held in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park in 1851, Henry showed his spectacle frames made of steel weighing 7 ½ grains (approx ½ gram). He called these his “invisible spectacles” and marketed himself as their inventor and maker.

said it was a great pity they could not get along, but as the facts proved the defendant to have acted wrongly in the matter, he must be convicted, and Berry was fined with costs 10s or 14 days imprisonment. The fine was accordingly paid.
Coming To New Malden In 1853 he purchased land in Chestnut Grove, and built a property for his family. All seemed well enough until May 1855 when Henry Berry landlord of the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse) appeared to answer a summons at the County Bench in Kingston charging him with using abusive language in a public thoroughfare to Mr H Weaber. From the evidence it appeared that for some considerable time much unpleasant feeling had existed between the parties, arising out of a past transaction between them, (the nature of which was not disclosed), and the defendant complained of the annoyance both himself and his family had been subjected to by Berry. The Magistrates
In Aug 1856 Berry issued a summons against William Weaber (Henry’s son). Henry was now inn keeper at the Malden Tavern in competition with Berry. The nature of the charge was that William had driven away some of his (Berry’s) geese. The geese were on waste land, and were spotted by the stationmaster at Malden Edward Dean, who told Weaber to bring them to him, and he impounded them. Dean then contacted Berry and told him what had happened, and that there was a 5 shilling fine for the damage the geese had done. Case dismissed and Berry to pay costs. Another charge of Henry Weaber taking away grass belonging to Berry was also dismissed. By October 1856 Weaber had become a pillar of the community, being a member of the committee organising the building of the temporary church and school in Poplar Walk (Grove), and becoming the secretary in 1857.He had donated £1 towards the costs of the church, and provided a room in the tavern where committee meetings could be held. meeting held in the Tavern, he was elected a director of the newly formed New Malden Gas Coal and Coke Company which was set up to manufacture gas in the village. But the Malden Tavern was still only a beer house, not having a licence to sell alcohol, and in 1857 when an application was submitted, it was opposed by Henry Berry on the grounds there was not sufficient population to warrant two establishments, and the application was refused. Society Host Weaber offered use of the Tavern for the meetings of the newly formed British Agricultural Society (Oct 1857). The society held their first exhibition in November at the Tavern, and Mr Weaber‘s Celery and Turnips were judged as excellent, and he was highly commended for his Mangelwurzel. The Society continued to hold their meetings at the Tavern in 1858, with Weaber sometimes acting as chairman, and when it came round to the applications for spirit licences that year the Malden Tavern was successful. A petition with 59 signatures accompanied the proposal, and Mr Weaber had spent £1500 refurbishing the property and laying out the gardens. The fifty nine signatures in favour encompassed everyone in the area bar five. Weaber had also put in place a library for the “working classes”, and it was pointed out that the

Agricultural Society had held their monthly meetings there since inception. Mr Berry also had a petition against the licence signed by 2/3 of the residents, so it looks as though some may have signed both documents. Berry seems to have accepted the decision with good grace, stating that he hoped “we would live long as neighbours, and both get a living”. Mr Weaber continued to host the exhibitions of the Agricultural Society, but was now able to offer dinner and spirits. For his troubles Weaber was elected onto the society’s committee at the 1858 AGM. Weaber also played host at the tavern to a meeting to hear civil engineer Mr William Bull’s plans for a railway connecting Isleworth to New Malden via Kingston. Although nothing came of the idea, it is interesting that Bull placed his Kingston station roughly where the present day station now stands. Certainly the main householders of Malden were in favour of the idea feeling it would “advance the interests of the village”. In May 1859 Weaber sold his optical business in Oxford Street to Charles Dales, and agreed not to set up another business within five miles of the shop on payment of £500 damages. Cow In A Haystack Henry Berry appeared in the county court again in the summer of 1859, this time for assaulting Mr Weaber. One of Mr Weaber’s cows had broken loose, and wandered onto land owned by the Lambeth Water Company (now Thames Water) which ran alongside the railway line near to the station (The Cut). It seems that Weaber’s cows had a habit of feeding on Berry’s haystacks which boarded the water company land, so as he went to retrieve the animal, Berry approached him brandishing a stick and a scuffle ensued with both men rolling on the ground. Others came to both men’s aid and got involved in the fight. Mr Berry had his shirt sleeve ripped off, and his shirt front torn. When they were eventually separated, Weaber exclaimed that if he had had a knife he would have stabbed him (Berry), and if he had had a pistol he would have shot him. After several court hearings Berry pleaded guilty to assault, and was bound over for £100. In December of the same year Weaber and Berry were in court again but this was an action for slander. The defendant (Berry) pleaded not guilty. On several occasions during May and June, the defendant had made disgusting observations about Weaber, with the object of injuring him in his trade (Expressions too coarse for publication). The defence was that the two parties had made up and shaken hands since the event, and anyway Weaber had verbally abused him in almost similar terms. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff Fine £10.

Peace In Our Time The handshake seems to have been real, as things between the two publicans quietened down. In 1861 Weaber took out a patent for an improvement in window fastenings, and in 1862 his eldest daughter Caroline married Samuel Smith a gun maker. In August 1863 Weaber transferred the licence of the Tavern to Charles Dowbelle as the family were preparing to leave the area. The Weabers were not moving to another area of London, they were emigrating to Australia. On 27th July 1864 they were all onboard the clipper Fiery Star as it sailed for Brisbane. Mr Weaber had probably
been attracted by the free land grants of £18-£30 being advertised by Her Majesty’s Government of Queensland”. The ship arrived in Australia on 20th November, but disaster awaited it on its return voyage to London early in 1865. This ship caught fire close to New Zealand on 19th April 1865, and 78 passengers and crew took to boats never to be seen again. Fortunately, at this time, the Weaber family had settled on the banks of the Logan River in South East Queensland, and started growing cotton on their 11 acre estate. The Malden Tavern was demolished circa 1868 to make way for the railway line connecting Malden and Kingston and a replacement was erected across the road in the village. Competition If you’ve recently been into “Suttles of Malden” (the stationery shop in the High Street opposite Tudor Williams, in case you need telling!) then you may have noticed their unique “I LOVE New Malden” range. There are mugs, mouse mats, coasters and notebooks to name but a few – all reasonably priced and a brilliant way to show your lurve for our super suburb! So, in partnership with the team at Suttles, I’m delighted to announce our fabulous NEW photography competition. Start snapping your seasonal pictures of New Malden for our 2016 calendar. Categories will be judged in 11 and under, under 18 and over 18s.
As this is a New Malden calendar, we do only want seasonal pictures (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) of the “village” or New Malden people out and about! Although… there may be a special allowance for the best picture taken at a recognisable international venue or alongside an A-list celebrity…. but only if you’re holding a copy of the Village Voice or an item from the “I heart NM” range! Well done to the Gomes and Churchouse girls and friends (below) for braving the cold and chips (poor things!) to help us launch this. So no matter how experienced (or old!) a photographer you are, get out there and capture the essence of the area, and the month. More information about how to enter will be released later in the year. Good luck!
The 12 winners will all be credited on the calendar – what an honour! Profits from all sales will go to the New Malden Christmas Lights Fund. I’d also love to use some of the winning pictures on the front covers of our 2016 magazines. Pre-orders will be available at a discounted rate – think surprise Christmas present for a loved one, neighbour or the ideal ‘Secret Santa’ gift for local colleagues (as well as all those unfortunate friends and family who’ve moved out of the area!) Or, just pop into Suttles from late November (tbc) to pick up your copy.

Clubs It’s not just cricket... As MaldenWanderers gear up for the new season, Steve Morgan shares KT3’s best-kept sporting secret April is the cruellest month. So reckoned TS Eliot, who clearly should have put in more time at winter nets. Yes, it’s that time of the year when grown men, or overgrown schoolboys in some cases, don their whites in pursuit of the ‘crimson rambler’. Some of us (depending on those nets) might even get to enjoy the sound of leather on willow every now and again . At Malden Wanderers CC – 136 years young, but arguably KT3’s best-kept sporting secret (yes, it is left just before the garage as you head down Traps Lane) – this is a big season. Our first XI, under new skipper James Wackett, will be doing its damnedest to regain Surrey Championship Premier League status – an accolade currently held by our twos and threes in their respective formats. At the other end of the scale, our nomadic fourth team is – as this is written – still trying to secure a regular home for its mixture of old stagers and young hopefuls press-ganged from the cream of a thriving Colts section now numbering 200. The game’s biggest problem these days – money aside – is the retention of players. With work hours ever increasing, giving up a Saturday to cricket is a labour of love. However, writing as someone who came back to the game after 30 years away, I can confidently claim that it is precisely this commitment and the value of the friendships it brings that makes the game unique. It is something we are working very hard on. There are few better feelings than returning to the clubhouse on Saturday evening for our four XIs to run through who did well, who had a shocker, and air those traditional excuses – ‘a big score is just around the corner’/ ‘that was never out’ / ‘we never get fair decisions at [insert name of opposition’.

So, if you’re thinking about starting – or resuming your career – it’s never too late. And if you have kids that you’re keen to see grow up understand the value of loyalty and teamwork, our door is always open. We go again in earnest on Sunday 26 April when our first team entertain Twickenham in the first round of the National Club Cup at Cambridge Avenue from 1pm. Our Colts’ registration night is on Friday 17 April from 6.30. For more details of who we are and what we do, visit maldenwanderers.play-cricket.com

Fundraising Vicar on the run (The WOLF Run) It was Fathers’ Day, 2014. The 9.30 congregation at Christ Church, New Malden heard a sermon on ‘The difference men can make to human trafficking’. Susannah Alexander, the preacher, disclosed some scandalous facts: even though it is 200 years since the abolition of the slave trade there are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history (estimated at more than 35 million); a large proportion of the non-fairtrade chocolate we consume is farmed by children who have been trafficked into the Ivory Coast, forced to spend long days in extremely hazardous conditions; trafficking isn’t just in far-off countries - an estimated 12,000 people are slaves in the UK, trafficked for sexual exploitation or forced labour. As she spoke, Susannah highlighted Hope for Justice, a charity that takes a practical approach

to ending slavery in the UK - identifying and rescuing victims, advocating on their behalf, providing restorative care which rebuilds lives and training frontline professionals to tackle slavery. One of the men listening that day was Tom Collins. He had been through treatment for testicular cancer in 2012 but was back to full health and his second son was born a few weeks after that Fathers’ Day sermon. He reflected on what Susannah had said: “It really horrifies me that children are trafficked and exploited; if it was my two little boys would I stop at anything to rescue them? I’m sure God must be angry and heart-broken that humans do such things and I think he is asking us to do something about it.” Tom sent out an invitation to others at Christ Church to take up the challenge to do something a bit crazy, have fun as a team, be motivated to get a bit fitter, and battle against the injustice of trafficking. A team of 17 men and women signed up, including the vicar Stephen Kuhrt. Together they are going to tackle The WOLF Run on 11th April 2015 (www.thewolfrun. com). The WOLF Run is a hardcore 10km run across raw natural terrain, including open ground, woodland, lakes & thick mud. Running in a pack, they will tackle a series of tough obstacles - run, climb, jump, wade, crawl and swim through a course designed to challenge them on every level. The team have set themselves the target of raising £10,000 and if they reach this target before the event Stephen, the vicar, will run in some form of clerical outfit (modified for health and safety reasons of course!) www.ccnm.org/ wolfrun

Not the budget, but rather thank you Harry My apologies if you may be requiring some more budget comment, but frankly I think there is more than enough well considered comment already for us all to consume at our leisure. However, despite the brilliant efforts of those accountants working overnight to interpret the ‘Red Book’, which has the real contents of the budget in far more detail, the interpretation of this minutiae will take far longer to appreciate. What we heard on Wednesday was a delightful set piece charade for both our benefit and that of the media scrabbling for content for 24 hour news. The Budget speech is not quite irrelevant, but the ‘Red Book’ is the key followed by the Finance Act, which of course is then going to be affected by the election - so we can just about ignore it all. Having said that, my colleague Ben Kumar has put out an excellent and succinct note on the key issues entitled ‘UK Budget 2015’. A Leader passes As I write the health of a great man is failing, and sadly will soon be lost. At the age of 91 he has certainly had time to make an impact, but this man has done far more in moulding and developing the dynamic city state of Singapore than any other individual. He has been controversial over his life but certainly if you judge a person by results then he has been a most effective and successful operator. Originally known as Harry Lee, he spent time briefly at the London School of Economics before moving to Cambridge where he read law. From here on he dropped his anglicised name and the Lee Kwan Yew brand was born. Lee served as Singapore’s first prime minister from 1959, when Singapore won self-rule, and carried on until 1990 when he finally stepped down. He led Singapore’s six-year transition from the often disruptive British colonial outpost, through to selfadministration, then to initially merger with, and then subsequent separation from Malaysia, to independent statehood, and Singapore’s declaration as a republic, in 1965. He founded the governing People’s Action Party and has been quite rightly credited with transforming
Singapore from a sleepy Asian entrepot into a bustling and wealthy industrial and financial hub. He encouraged economic growth with (initially) easy regulation and low taxes for business, and by developing a large bureaucratic apparatus to look after its citizens. This was especially effective around compulsory saving for pensions (something which we have only just started to embrace).
However, progress came at the expense of certain civil liberties. Critics and human rights groups condemned his iron-fisted rule (albeit in a velvet glove) of the country which saw his political opponents jailed, exiled, or even sometimes ruined through costly libel suits. Nevertheless, if you were willing to play the game, then you could be part of the success - but you were aware that there was a force behind the scenes. But given where the country came from, when riven with riots and weak economic growth, it certainly makes the claim of the effectiveness of a benevolent dictator somewhat more interesting. Some abused their role and position in the market with idiots like the management of Barings allowing the irresponsible Nick Leeson to run amok with shareholders’ capital. That just underlined to the Singaporeans as to why effective control and regulation was more important. Now when you look at their economic strength it is certainly difficult to argue against. There has been an opposition but never of any effect and on one occasion the only opposition member was donated his seat because he ran ‘the most effective campaign’. Only 12 opposition politicians have ever been elected to parliament in Singapore. I had the honour of meeting Lee once and you were aware that he was a man of great presence and intellectual strength. I wish him well in what are probably his last hours, we will remember him as a highly successful and effective leader. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Around Britain Lakes & Waterways 1. Coton in the Elms, Derbyshire - The Derbyshire village of Coton in the Elms is the furthest point from the sea it is possible to be in the British Isles: as measured by the Ordnance Survey, the village stands 113km (70 miles) from its nearest coastline. 2. Eas a’Chual Aluinn, Highland - Dropping 201m (658ft), Eas a’Chual Aluinn is the highest waterfall in the British Isles. A so-called ‘horsetail’ waterfall (that is, one that maintains almost constant contact with the rock beneath it), the water of Eas a’Chual Aluinn descends more than three times the height of Niagara Falls. 3. Loch Ness - Loch Ness is the second largest loch in Scotland, the fourth largest lake in the whole of the UK, and with an average depth of 132m (433ft) is deeper than any other lake in Britain. In fact, Loch Ness is so vast it contains more water than all of the lakes in England and Wales combined. 4. Raasay, Highland - Raasay in the Inner Hebrides is Britain’s twenty-eighth largest island, and is surrounded by some of the deepest inshore waters in the whole of the British Isles. Inner Sound – the stretch of water that separates Raasay from the Scottish mainland – plummets to a depth of 323m (1,060ft). 5. Seil, Argyll & Bute - The island of Seil in Scotland’s Firth of Lorn stands just 6m (20ft) from the Scottish mainland, forming the narrowest sea strait in the whole of the British Isles.

New Malden Matters by John Knowls The New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents’ Association has now been in existence for over five years. The main thrust of the Association is, as always, the thorny issue of planning, but we are here for other aspects of life in New Malden and we do hope that these are not all negative aspects, but positive ones as well. There is a national election in May. There is one thing about Kingston about which this Association can remark on without being party political and that is the high Council Tax charged in Kingston, the highest in London. We can remark on it in this context because the reason why it is so high is that the grant from Central Government to Kingston is so low, and because the system for the grant allocation was devised by the Conservatives in the 1990s, continued under Labour before 2010, and continued by the Conservatives since. The Council Tax on the average Band D property in Kingston in 2014-15 has been £1678, and for band F, a common band, £2424. The tax for both these bands is 2.5 times the tax in Westminster and Wandsworth, and 57 per cent higher than in the apparently rich Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The Kingston tax is higher than in the nearby boroughs of Merton, Sutton and Croydon, but only a little higher than in Richmond.
might be expected to charge more tax and vice versa. Those in a position to compare say, however, that services in Kingston are if anything less generous than in neighbouring Boroughs, despite a Band D property occupier in Kingston having to pay roughly £1000 more per year than one in Wandsworth, and a Band F one £1400 more. You might also want to ask candidates about planning policies of recent times. That is certainly party political, but all parties are faced with the same problem, and almost all the planning parameters are decided by Central Government, and imposed on the Boroughs, some through the Mayor of London. London is of course the place of fastest population growth in the country, and there are too few dwellings for the population, as seen from the very high house prices and rents, and the boom in construction. There are nevertheless questions which can be asked about planning. Is it sensible for so much of the growth in employment to be in Central London, when offices in this Borough are empty or being converted to flats? Should dwellings be provided without parking provision at all, at the expense of existing street parking? Are additional dwellings being provided without adequate provision of associated services, such as schools, water, sewerage and roads? Should new dwellings be located mostly where developers see profit, or concentrated where land is vacant or poorly used? You will probably have other questions on this subject. www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk or e-mail us at newmaldenresidents@gmail.com The Groves Residents’ Association can be contacted at: grovesassociation@btinternet.com
It might be expected that the Council tax for a given band would be basically the same in all when you quote vv03sx Boroughs, and that the Central Government grant would pay sufficient to keep services much the JD Hair Designs is situated on South Lane Parade same, so that if a particular Borough had a high just off the A3. Clubs Concealed on Coombe Road - a Brief History of the Hidden Golf Course “Don’t play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.” Harry Vardon Grand Opening Imagine the media frenzy if Tiger Woods, Rory Mcllroy, Phil Mickleson and Ricky Fowler came to play golf in New Malden. Well, on Saturday 1st May 1926 the equivalent happened: Abe Mitchell, Harry Vardon (famous for the Vardon grip), Alex Herd and Ted Ray, four of the greatest professionals of the time, played an exhibition match to mark the opening of Malden Golf Club on its move from Raynes Park (where the club had been founded in 1893). Royal Connections The land on which the course is built was leased from the FitzGeorge estate in 1926. In 1579, Thomas Vincent bought the land, known as Coombe Manor, from Queen Elizabeth I. (Some of the high walls forming the boundaries of his garden can still be seen near the top of Traps Lane on the left as you go up the hill). It has changed hands a number of times since. In 1753 the land was bought by John, later 1st Earl, Spencer (Princess Diana’s ancestor). In 1837, the 3rd Earl Spencer sold the land to Prince Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge and seventh son of George III. When he died in 1850, his son George, the 2nd Duke of Cambridge, inherited the estate and it was his younger son, Colonel Sir Augustus Fitzgeorge KCVO CB who became President of the new club. Much of the land on which the Malden Golf course lies had been the Hoppingwood Farm. The southern end of the farm was cut in two by the railway line in 1838 and, it is thought that, the tunnel under the railway alongside Beverley Brook was originally built so that cows could reach the other part of the farm which occupied what is now Beverley Park. Famous Golfers Some of the club’s more famous members include England cricketers Sir Jack Hobbs and Micky Stewart and fifteen time world snooker champion Joe Davis. Famous golfers to play the course include Gary Player and Bing Crosby. What lies behind? So, if you ever wondered what lies behind the large building at the junction of Coombe Road and Traps
28
Lane, now you know: over one hundred acres of green and pleasant land, home to a large number of species of birds, a few foxes and any number of golfers escaping the hustle and bustle of suburban life.

Would P.G. Wodehouse recognise any of today’s occupants of the club house? No. While the club acknowledges its history and traditions, the days of retired colonels dressed in tweeds and plus fours and stuffy etiquette are long gone (although the days of dodgy golf trousers are not). You will find, on the course and in the bar, pretty much the same mix of people you would find in the rest of New Malden.

Baking Fruit Tiramisu This is a simpler version of the classic Italian dessert with layers of rich mascarpone cream, coffee soaked sponge fingers, chocolate and fresh fruit. Books Open Links by Dom Holland
Local Perrier Award Winning Comedian Dominic Holland on his latest novel and what why all the proceeds are going to the Anthony Nolan Trust The famous playwright, Neil Simon in his brilliant autobiography explains the review that has been most helpful to him in his career. “Neil Simon did not have a good idea for a play this year, but he wrote one anyway.” I think this happens too often with novelists as well. A frequent question I am asked is why I have only written four novels and my answer is simple. To date I have only come up with four stories that are really worth telling. All of my novels are adult comic fairy-tales; books which I hope will make my readers feel happy and particularly so, my latest novel, Open Links. But why? Well, because its’ a good story I hope but also because all proceeds from OPEN LINKS are going to Anthony Nolan. So it’s a feel-good book which could also save someone’s life. Anthony Nolan is a charity that I have long supported. But my ‘support’ didn’t really amount to very much. As well as a small direct debit each month, I would attend their gala ball on Park Lane each year in my capacity of being a ‘celebrity’ (free tickets although I have always paid) - and at the slap up meal, I would be thanked and clapped just for attending, something which I have always found excruciating.
Frankly, there are too many very worthy charities but Anthony Nolan has always chimed with me because their results are very tangible. Each year they give up to 1400 people the chance to overcome a life threatening cancer and every year, some 700 people survive an illness who without Anthony Nolan would have died. And they appeal to me further because leukaemia and other blood disorders are completely indiscriminate and not based on any lifestyle choices. Just bad luck I suppose and later today it could be me diagnosed? Or my wife, my son, my mum… and if this were to happen, then our ultimate port of call would be Antony Nolan in the hope that someone somewhere had provided a tissue sample and might be a bone marrow match. Anthony Nolan cannot process all of the people willing to register their tissue type. They don’t have the funds to do so. So quite simply, the more funds they can raise, the more samples they can process on to their register and the more lives that they can save. This is an exciting prospect for me. I thoroughly enjoyed writing Open Links and I’m delighted that people might have fun reading it and in to the bargain, help a great charity to continue its extraordinary lifesaving work.
So for a while I have had it in mind that I would like to do something a bit more worthy for the charity, something more than eating a nice meal. I was about to start writing Open Links and because I needed a character to have an illness, it made sense that I might choose a blood cancer. And whilst writing the novel, it occurred to me that I could donate the book to Antony Nolan. 36 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

Tue 28 Apr – Sat 2 May Children’s Touring Partnership presents THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS Based on the bestselling novel by John Boyne, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a heart-wrenching tale of an unlikely friendship between two innocent boys. Set during World War II, the story is seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and devastating consequences. Bruno’s friendship with Shmuel takes him from innocence to revelation, revealing the poetic irony that through a child’s eye everyone can appear the same. 1 Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the sliced potatoes and simmer for about 5 minutes until almost tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. Set aside. 2 Place the aubergine slices in a shallow bowl and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Heat a heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the aubergine slices for 1-2 minutes on each side until tender and just golden. Remove and set aside. 3 Add the rest of the oil to the pan and gently fry the garlic for 1 minute. Whisk in the vegetable stock, oregano and tomato puree and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, Gas Mark 5. 4 Layer the potato and aubergine slices in a large ovenproof dish (at least 8cm deep). Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper between each layer. Pour the stock mixture over the vegetables. 5 Place the yogurt, eggs and cornflour in a bowl and beat together until smooth. Add the nutmeg and season lightly. Spoon the mixture over the layered vegetables and top with the tomato slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling. TIP Sprinkle with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese or thin slices of mozzarella cheese before baking to make this dish even tastier! Do you need an extra pair of hands? Then let me help you! Leisure Buggyfit I joined Buggyfit in January this year and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. The classes are a great opportunity to get out the house (whatever the weather!), take some time to think about yourself, and blow those cobwebs away. The classes are invigorating and energising, it’s great being out in the fresh air and focusing on your own physical and mental wellbeing. What I like about the classes is that they’re tailored specifically to post-natal exercise. We focus a lot on pelvic floor, posture, abs, as well as other parts of the body and general cardio. The trainers, Anna and Alex, are great, they really push you so you feel like you’ve had a good workout, and they’re also very knowledgeable about post-natal exercise and care which is important. They take time to explain each of the movements so you understand what part of the body you’re working and why. They’re also really friendly and are happy to wheel any screaming babies around while you’re focusing on your squats! The little ones seem to enjoy it too, my little girl is
“The Ultimate Class for Mums and Babies” The Times
nearly 5 months old and at a good age where she just sleeps through most of the class. If they’re not asleep then they’re usually quite entertained by watching you and the other mums power walking in a circle around the buggies or doing lunges! I’m into my second block of classes now and planning to continue for as long as I can. I would really recommend this class to anyone who’s had a baby recently and keen to get back into shape, meet other mums and have fun! It’s good for you and good for baby. With summer approaching and the lovely spring weather to enjoy, now is the perfect time to get out there with your buggy and soak up that vitamin D!

Hobbies Bird watching in New Malden by Sarah Harris
I spend too much of my time gazing out of windows. I think I may have a mild obsession but it brings me so much enjoyment that I want to share it with others. I am a garden bird watcher. There, my secret is out! My town garden in the heart of New Malden is a 25ft X 30ft slice of bird heaven. This didn’t happen by accident. It has taken me a few years to achieve the depth and variety of climbing plants needed to make birds feel safe from predators and to provide food. I have also changed my gardening practices so that from the end of July until March my garden looks a bit of a mess! I leave leaf litter on the ground and I resist pulling up dead stems for example. Leaf litter and hollow stems provide over-wintering protection for invertebrates so that in the spring there are plenty of bugs and beasties for the birds to feed their young. I also have log piles, a small pond and bird boxes. Like any avid garden bird watcher I provide a good variety of supplementary bird food and fresh water too. During late February and March, whilst we are still bemoaning the chilly mornings and longing for spring, our garden birds are extremely busy. The focus is still on surviving the wintry conditions at this time of year, but many garden birds have been making preparations for the breeding season for a while now. In early February my resident cock robin let down his guard and allowed a female robin, or hen, in to his fiercely defended territory. It is actually very difficult for robins to overcome their strong instinct to repel another of their kind on sight and take a mate. Once she’d wooed him though she set about finding a nesting site. Much to my utter joy she chose one of my nest boxes close to our back door but reasonably well hidden and protected by thorny climbing roses. For a couple of weeks she was extremely busy finding suitable nesting materials. I watched her for some time collecting dry leaves and petals from my hydrangea. She also liked the fibres from my doormat and the lining from my hanging baskets. Finally I saw her collecting moss to give the nest a nice soft lining. The nest has been complete for a couple of weeks now and I presume that the hen is now replenishing 56
her reserves and getting back up to breeding condition following her nest building exertions. I’m not sure what the outcome will be for this pair but I’m keeping my fingers crossed! It may seem that the hen was doing all the work but you would be wrong! Whilst the hen was distracted with home-making the cock was busy defending his territory. This involved singing from prominent positions and seeing off a very stubborn and persistent dunnock. The dunncock is at first sight an uninspiring little brown bird about the size of a house sparrow. However if you take a closer look it has rich brown upper parts and a black streaked back and flank. The head and breast are blue-grey. It moves mouse-like with its body close to the ground. You are unlikely to see this bird on a bird table but rather skulking apologetically underneath it. In January during one of my window gazing sessions I observed some very interesting dunnock behaviour. There was some serious territory defending going on between two dunnocks involving lots of wing flapping and chest bashing. Unfortunately one of the dunnocks was only a reflection in a mirror from one of my garden ornaments! I felt so sorry for the little thing that I went out and placed the mirror face down. I was worried that if I left the mirror in place it would wear itself out with all its posturing! Observing bird behaviour is really rewarding. These tiny little creatures that I have talked about here are so incredible and they face a daily fight for survival. Take a look out of your window once in a while. You might be surprised what you see.

Gardening Grow your own
By Pippa Greenwood I’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to choose to eat only organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are free from chemical pesticides. Even if you only have a tiny patio garden or backyard, you can brighten up your supper table with some good looking vegetables, home grown in containers. It is important to use large containers. Smaller ones may look fine but most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times, and so a larger volume of compost is much easier to look after. They will need to be positioned in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Growing bags will do but they don’t exactly look good. In addition, they often seem to contain pretty poor compost and, when it comes to keeping growing bags adequately watered, they are nothing short of a nightmare. Large flower pots or planters are the best bet, and you can use terracotta, plastic or glazed pots. Make sure that the containers are well supplied with drainage holes, and that you have a layer of broken pots on top. I suggest using either a standard multi-purpose or a multi-purpose compost mixed with a loam based compost – both produce good crops and are fairly easy to maintain. You can incorporate some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed. There are lots of different vegetables that can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels or seed catalogues as those particularly well suited to life in a pot are described as so. If you like home grown beans you can use any variety of dwarf French bean, or if you prefer, a runner. The miniature runner, ‘Hestia’, has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb. 58
Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should manage to crop well despite its small size. Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a try, and do remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot pepper and have a sheltered, warm spot then try the crazy looking, heavy cropping ‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’.

Salad crops can all be grown in a growing bag or other container, and are guaranteed to look good. For some really wacky colour try growing the richred stemmed Ruby Chard or ‘Bright Lights’ chard with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white. When it comes to maintenance, remember that anything growing in a pot needs more TLC as its roots will not be able to tap into the further reaches of the soil to find moisture and nutrients. Plenty of food and water is a must, and I tend to use a high potash liquid tomato feed, which works a treat. To keep your pots free from slug and snail attacks, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pot or planter.

Once everything is growing well and cropping, don’t forget to pick patio veg regularly if you want the plants to keep cropping. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ veg growing system, biological controls, fleece, copper tape and lots more besides.

A Malden Man by Raj Randhawa Word of mouth When living in a place like New Malden, many of us depend on word of mouth recommendation, for the best places to go or the best people to know. Over my eight odd years here I’ve picked up some tips, which I thought I’d share with you: Aches & pains? A few years back I started to suffer from back pain, which has included everything from muscle seizures and trapped nerves to general lower back pain. It was my wife who recommended David Melrose- an osteopath at the Aston Clinic (on Kingston Road) who apparently ‘worked wonders’. I duly booked an appointment to see him and I’ve never looked back (get it?). Not only is he a qualified osteopath, he also brings his knowledge of other healing techniques such as Applied Kinesiology and Neuromuscular Technique and has perfected a system to accurately diagnose a problem before efficiently and effectively healing his patients. He’s the most effective practitioner of this sort I’ve ever visited and however bad my back gets, he always manages to pinpoint the cause and make it better quickly. David Melrose also works out of his clinic in Harley St, but we’re extremely fortunate to have someone of his calibre in new Malden. Snap! If you haven’t noticed, New Malden is full of young families and if there’s one thing every family loves, is a photo-shoot. We do of course have the famous photography franchise on the Kingston Road, which is fine if you’ve got four figure sums of money burning a hole in your back pocket. If like me you don’t, then listen up. My wife and I came across Nina Assam from Soora photography, a local business she runs out of New Malden. A big focus for Nina is corporate headshots but as an experienced photographer she’s brilliant at weddings and family photos. We ended up going to her home photography studio with the kids for a family photo shoot. Nina’s really warm, welcoming and above all 60
(which is great for me and probably most other dads), makes you feel comfortable and relaxed during the shoot. The results were exactly that we wanted- warm, happy, well-shot professional photos of our family, which now punctuate our otherwise whitewashed walls at home. And at a fraction of the price of better known photography studios in New Malden. Archi Texts I needed to hire an architect and wanted someone local whom I could meet regularly if required. A friend referred me to Justin Cooper from Mohsin Cooper Architects (in Raynes Park), and I’ve never felt the need to go anywhere else. Not only are they consummate professionals that know their stuff, they’re also a great bunch of guys to work with. They manage everything from residential to commercial, so they’re well worth a chat if you need some architectural advice. There’s more, but you’ll have to look out for part 2 of this article later on in the year for some more local gems.
