Greetings!

Why am I completely useless at decorating cakes? The baking part, fine, light a fluffy sponges are not a problem. The icing… well, my children come to the rescue and added more superior finishing touches than I can. Needless to say I have complete Facebook envy whenever a friend ‘boasts’ a picture of their marvellous creations – you know who you are, and quite frankly it is just showing off! That’s my pure decorating jealousy bubbling to the surface. Not attractive, I know, but I cannot be the only Mum who struggles with fine point icing. How do you think my poor creations feel sitting next to the perfect ones you see at the PTA cake stall? At least I haven’t had to suffer the shame of one of my cakes being the only one left unsold….. I refer to a dear friend who will undoubtedly now become a master baker having just received a posh Kenwood Chef for her birthday. Me, I have decided to master the craft from the outside in. Having invested in some pretty amazing food dyes I started on Saturday with some St Patrick’s day fairy cakes – in anticipation of Ireland’s 6 Nations victory. A sponge of green, cream and gold, they actually needed no decoration and were admired and gobbled up immediately. Carried away with my success I have progressed today to pink and blue fairy cakes (what is the difference between a fairy cake and a cup cake by the way?) and might even splodge some icing on top to super impress the 7 girls who are coming to tea. And where am I going with all of this experimentation I hear you ask... Well, from 31st March to 30th April there are 3 birthdays in our house (none of them mine) and I have wonderful plans afoot. How similar the finished articles will be to the pictures in my head is anyone’s guess, but I can guarantee that there will be a huge amount of mess to clear up from the kitchen floor, work surfaces, and my face and most probably hair too. Or maybe the supermarket or bakers beckons…. Anyway, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

Flags Framed and Flying

Class 6G from Christ Church New Malden Primary were recently invited to a special event at New Malden library. The occasion was the unveiling of an official Olympic flag by Eileen Gray, a pioneer of women’s cycling, former international cyclist, CBE holder, Olympic torch bearer and former mayor of Kingston.

to wear one of her medals. There was also a raffle for two books about cycling which Eileen had written and signed. Plus a chance to be photographed with her, including one holding her Olympic torch. In addition to the unveiling of the Olympic flag, 6G had the privilege of being the first people to hoist the Union Jack up a flagpole which has been placed in the garden facing Kingston Road. The pupils from Christ Church also spent some time in the Library answering the question, ‘What do you like and dislike about New Malden?’ They then wrote down what they thought, providing useful information for the council. This was followed by biscuits, crisps and squash. The flag now hangs upstairs in New Malden library for all the public to see, so that the memory of the 2012 Olympic Games can be remembered. But it is also there to inspire young people to take up sports, be more active and perform greater feats of sporting ability. Theo McDermott Roberts and Owen Lloyd

Our borough was gifted an Olympic flag because Kingston was one of the host boroughs for the Olympic Games; an Olympic torch and the cycling both passed through Kingston. The council decided to hang the flag in New Malden library because it was a public place. Eileen Gray, who is 93 years old, was the star of the unveiling, giving a short speech in which she expressed the importance of cycling, and exercise saying, “You children shouldn’t watch too much TV, and should get out and exercise more”. Councillor Codd and Councillor Smith also gave speeches. Eileen Gray first started cycling during World War ll. She lived in London and worked as an engineer but, because of the Blitz, commuting into work was very difficult. In order to make sure she got to work on time Eileen cycled, rain or shine, through the devastated streets. She enjoyed cycling so much that she took it up as a hobby and joined the Apollo cycling club, one of the Congratulations Jenny on your 100th edition. We have only local clubs which accepted women. New Malden History Malden College For Young Gentlemen by Robin Gill

Older residents might remember the building which stood on the Malden Road site of what is now Welbeck Close opposite the turning of Thetford Road. The building was pulled down just before the Second World War, and the land given over to building. First term In the 1850s and 1860s education was not compulsory in England. Looking at the 1861 census for New Malden, there were only 20 children classed as scholars (only 6 boys), and this is out of a total of around 100 who were of school age. There was only one school in the village a small boarding school for girls in Acacia Grove run by a widow Elizabeth West and two daughters Emma (who taught singing and the

piano) and Mary. Most of the other children who went to school, probably attended in Norbiton either at the juvenile (run by Miss Emma Brown) or infants school (run by Miss Eliza Hands) or had private tuition at home if the family was well off. By 1871 the provision of education had improved; the old church of St James which stood in Poplar Grove had been converted into a school in March 1867, and a church school had been built in Lime Grove in 1870 and enlarged a year later. Next door to this at Grove House stood a girls’ (ages 7-10) boarding school run by Ann Parker. Following the dispute between the vicar of Christ Church and some of his congregation in 1870 a new church was built called Holy Trinity. The minister who was invited to come to Malden from Catford was Reverend Dr Samuel James Cox Dicksee. He also opened a school called Malden College in what was then Traps Lane, and is now Coombe Road. The building stood somewhere between Lime and Chestnut Groves. Samuel lived there with his mother and two sisters; there were also two young assistant teachers from Auxerre in France teaching language and music. There were five boys as boarders aged 9-15 including one from Saarbrucken in Germany. The annual prize giving was late in July when medals and certificates were awarded. In 1874 the main

prize-winner was George Nuthall a member of the well known confectioner family from Kingston. His brother Charles also won an award, as did the two Attfield brothers who lived in Kingston Road. Another winner was Herbert Himus whose family owned a large house (Fairholme) in the same road now replaced by flats, and Archie Rough later to find fame with Malden Wanderers. New school By 1874 it was felt that the premises in Traps Lane were too small, and no more pupils could be taken on. So it was fortuitous that a site on the Malden Road, owned by Mr John King, became available, in the fields between New and Old Malden. The college was built within a year and was equipped with a tower to act as an isolation section. The battlements were 4 foot high allowing convalescents to take in the fresh air. The dining hall contained busts of great men, and decorated with foliage and flowers. The imposing steps leading to the front door created many a difficulty

for the aspiring six year old on his first day of term. The prize giving that year was a more grand affair attended by the Mayor Bedford Marsh, and Dr Dicksee advised that a further three scholarships would be available for boys who had completed one term. The prizes were books instead of medals and certificates and handed out by the Mayor with a few well chosen words. Afterwards the boys were instructed in swordplay by their teacher Mr Baker. It became customary for these occasions to start with the boys giving speeches in English, French, and Latin. The winner of the top prize, the gold medal, had to pass at least eight exams during the fourteen days of testing. The recipient was allowed to wear a crimson tassel and a bullion button for the next twelve months. The same boy Lennox Amott won for two consecutive years and went on to become a successful poet. Dr Dicksee advertised the College in the Times, stating that “pupils receive a sound clerical and commercial education” whilst the fees were “very moderate and strictly inclusive”. The boys would have access to grounds of eight acres, a large covered swimming

bath 40 foot long, and a gymnasium. The college even had its own dairy, and the site was described as “truly healthy” A prospectus would be sent by return post. The staff prided themselves on their efficient teaching system, and the servants who helped out were all experienced in the work of a small school. Dr Dicksee was also able to advertise the school in regional papers thanks to a network of ministers of the Free Church Of England, such as the Rev James Wonnacott in Exeter, he also offered places to deserving causes such as David Hughes (14), a young miner at the Tynewydd Colliery in Wales, who had been rescued after being buried underground for ten days in 1877. Dicksee remained in Malden until 1879 when he was appointed to Christ Church in Crowborough. Prior to his departure he joined in partnership with another teacher Alexander Hayes Singleton to run the school. Unfortunately, the arrangement did not work out and the partnership was dissolved in September 1880 leaving Singleton to run the school and Dicksee to pay the debts. Singleton tried to run the school based on a “sound modern and classical education” but could not make a success of the venture. Both men filed for bankruptcy in 1881, and the building and grounds were put up for sale. At that time there were 23 boarders, a housekeeper, assistant housekeeper, cook, housemaid, and gardener as well as the teaching staff. New principal It is not clear as to what happened to the College between 1881 and 1884 but the new school year (Sept 1884)saw the College being advertised by the new principal as being in a “Delightful and healthy situation, with large and lofty school rooms and dormitories” “Spacious cricket grounds, gymnasium, and swimming baths”. The school offered home comforts together with a sound education, and an inspection was invited. The new principal was Alfred Streeter. Alfred Streeter had arrived in Malden in 1879 taking up residence in Chestnut Grove with his wife and three children, and by 1884 he had taken over the lease of the college Both foreign and English masters were advertised, and it was deemed” a good home for orphans and foreign pupils”. Fees were set at 38 and 42 guineas per pupil. During the school summer holidays in 1887 it was decided to let the whole estate to interested parties. For the six week period you had use of the building which was approached from the road by a carriage drive. There was also stabling, a purpose built coach house, hot and cold baths and swimming pools, and acres of grounds including a cricket field. The college had an organ and three pianos for entertainment, and guests would also have the use of a donkey and cart, and other livestock such as cows and poultry which

constituted the school farm. The census of 1891 shows only three boarders at the college, but these are two from Cape Town, and one from New Orleans ,so the rest of the boys must have gone home for Easter. For these boarders and the family there was a cook, housemaid, and kitchen maid. By 1894 Malden College was described as one of the best schools under private management. There were about seventy pupils in term time, thirty eight as boarders. The boys were aged between seven and seventeen and taught to local exam level, and school inspections were actively encouraged. By 1901 there were sixteen pupils registered as boarders mostly from the London area and probably the same number as day pupils. In 1903 Mr Streeter bought the freehold of the property. The college also started to lend out its grounds for various social events, such as the annual fete of the Coombe and Malden Habitation of the Primrose League, a Conservative association open to both Men and Women. The fete usually held in August when the

school was on holiday consisted mainly of sports and games including cricket and shooting. Mr Streeter was elected a Justice of the Peace in December 1906. Alfred Streeter died at the college on 18th February 1907 he was 62. At that time he was also chairman of the council. He was one of Malden’s most respected residents taking responsibility for both the erection of the council offices (1905), and the introduction of the district tramway system (1906). A large percentage of the male residents of Malden in that generation had received their education at the college. Mr Streeter also helped on the board of the local national schools, and he was a keen supporter of the fire service. So much so, that the town’s first steam engine was christened “Alfred Streeter”. Before the war The new principal was Mr George Henry Wollett a Canadian from Ontario, who bought his new wife Florence to the college. The school still boasted an attendance of around 60 pupils

Like most of the other schools, Malden College lost many of its old boys during the First World War. One in particular should be mentioned Lieutenant JW Freeman of the Royal Engineers who was killed just ten weeks after reaching the front. He had achieved the acting rank of captain, and was in line for a military cross had he survived. So little information remains about the college, which stood next to a meadow developed into Bartlands Lawn Tennis Courts. The entrance was marked by two large pillars, and white painted panelled fence. The college itself stood about 150 yards back from the road and was approached by a circular drive. At its height it accommodated around 100 pupils of which 50% were boarders. It was said that one of the pupils was the son of a president of a South American republic while others were sons of music hall stars. It was also claimed that one of the masters was a captain in the First World War who won a posthumous Victoria Cross for saving the life of his sergeant at the expense of his own, but I have been unable to find any records confirming this. The uniform included a black cap with a red Maltese cross, and up until the outbreak of World War One there was a thriving Old Boys Association who used to hold annual dinners in London.

Changes The school closed in 1914 and did not reopen until 1928, then calling itself Saint Georges Boys School, but was closed after a few years due to the actions of the principal with a pupil, for which he was sentenced to four months imprisonment. It reopened again in 1935 with William Russell-Davis as principal; its address was given as 182 Malden Road. It closed for the final time before World War Two (see Something in Linoleum by Paul Vaughan). Whilst there is unlikely to be anyone who lives in present day Malden who attended the school, it is interesting to learn about its chequered history.

Malden Fortnight 2014 from 6th July

Do you remember last summer, or have your memories been washed out by the recent )and frequent) downpours? Well, I remember, and it was FANTASTIC!!! Not unaided, I hasten to add, by absolutely spectaculour weather. We had dry weather from the beginning until the end and, surprisingly, certain events suffered because it was just TOO hot - famously the annual dog show which was cancelled for concerns over animal safety. Big Band night was also down on attendance as was the Presentation Evening. But what a relief to not be constanly worrying about ‘what happens it it rains..’ So, we’ve started planning 2014, but will need to take the weather as it comes. This year’s theme is “Carnival” and for the parade on Saturday 5th July we are seeking one or two steel bands preferably comprising of young musicians to either walk in the parade or to be transported along the High Street on a flat bed vehicle. The Malden Fortnight Committee would be grateful

if any person or group that wishes to join in the festivities would contact Tony on 020 8942 0434 or email wag36@btinternet.com So, get the dates in your diary, let us know if you want to organise an event. And, if you have spare time and want to get involved in organising this wonderful community fortnight - well, don’t be shy! Finally, if you or someone you know (aged 11 and under) fancy winning £50, plus £75 for your Primary School, then why not enter our competition to design the Malden Fortnight logo for 2014? See page 58 for more information.

We experienced some hard times in more recent years and in fact was close to having to close its doors several years ago. However with the help of a small band of members the club changed its policies and goals and now currently it is more than holding its own. This has been helped with the closure of the Malden club which was a similar club in the area and with the New Malden Artisans from New Malden golf club having to leave their clubhouse. The club has just undergone a complete facelift inside and out. The outside has benefitted with new windows a repainted front and new sign. The rear of the club has been cleared and at the back is an outside patio area with bench seats and tables, a barbeque and even a TV for special sporting events. The inside of the club has had the lounge extended and redecorated and new carpet and furniture fitted. The snooker room has also been refurbished with four full size snooker tables new high tech lighting and carpet making it a joy in which to relax and play snooker. Hobbies A Creative?? Live in New Malden??

Are you a maker, crafter,

sewer, painter, singer, film-maker, potter, draw-er, general creator of anything imaginative or just plain out there? We were wondering if there were any “Creatives” in New Malden that want to get together, share ideas …maybe it will just be an opportunity to meet like-minded people or the start of a creative hub in the sleepy suburb of NM. We were thinking of a music and art festival to add to the Malden fortnight or should we follow in Surbiton’s footsteps and ski down Coombe gardens on blocks of ice. Whatever the possibilities, we thought we would see if there is any interest in getting together with a meet at the Glasshouse Pub(14 Coombe road)on the 28th April. We have a FB page if you want to let us know you can make it or register your interest if you can’t ! This is a one off event to see if there is any interest to take it forward…so please let us know your thoughts. www.facebook.com/pages/New-MaldenCreative/383374601803999

Time to change your mattress? ADVERTISEMENT

Most people sleep on it and pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

By Sandra Haynes

I

s your mattress over 7 years old, saggy or just not as comfortable as it used to be? Putting off replacing it can lead to disturbed sleep, morning tiredness, stiff neck and back ache. In fact, it’s the main reason for lack of sleep for most people – they just don’t realize it. Buying a new mattress might seem like an expense you can manage without but it’s one of the most valuable things you can do to improve your health and general well being.

What happens to your old mattress over time? The main problem is deteriorating support. Over time, the springs inside your mattress lose their firmness so they start to sag under

your weight. Eventually they become so weakened they retain your shape creating dips and hollows across the surface of the mattress. It’s this unevenness and lack of support that causes the body to toss and turn during the night. The lumpier it gets the more disturbed sleep you’re likely to get.

Shall we dance!

Back in 2008, we realised that we had a hidden asset that deserved greater use; it was the beautiful dance-floor in the Richard Mayo Hall, part of the United Reformed Church buildings in Eden Street, central Kingston. The popular TV programme ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ was re-awakening interest in ballroom dancing and we were fortunate to find an experienced teacher, for both Latin American and Ballroom. For the past six years, Friday afternoons have seen dancers – some experienced, some learners – enjoying the quicksteps, waltzes, foxtrots and more exotic rhythms such as the rumba and cha-cha-cha, recapturing skills and memories from Saturday nights at the local Dance Hall or finding a whole new world of movement and exercise. Jeff, our teacher, made the classes fun as well as teaching new steps we never dreamed we could master. Jeff is currently unable to continue with tuition for the time being – but Linda Haynes has taken his place, with her expertise in salsa as well

the other dances. She makes sure we all try the steps, and her music creates a lively atmosphere. Over the years, the class has become more like a club as members have got to know each other, and chat over half-time tea and biscuits. From time to time we announce a Grand Tea Dance – cream tea and cakes – when we invite past dancers and others to join us. If you would like to come along, you can be sure of a warm welcome from coordinators June and Liz, from Linda and from all the dancers. A new group for vegans and friends

We had our first meeting on 13 March -a new local group for anyone who is already vegan, thinking about it, wanting to know a bit more, interested in vegan cooking etc. I started the group because the nearest existing groups seemed a bit far for me to travel. Anyone living locally -and all who might want to travel in sometimes to be with us, is welcome. I went vegan about 14 months ago -for compassionate and environmental reasons- and am now very enthused about vegan living! I have found my health and vitality have improved significantly, which has been an unlooked for bonus. Mainly I just enjoy the knowledge that I’ve opted out of something that has long troubled me, and the relief and peace of mind that brings me. I want to help others to do the same. The group will mainly be for socialising over food and sharing recipes and so on, a space to ask questions

24

and discuss the ups and downs of living vegan in a world that isn’t really set up for it yet. My rather flagging interest in cooking has been revitalised with veganism. I find that I now enjoy my times in the kitchen. The challenge of creating delicious meals from vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, pulses and legumes is a bit like alchemy or some sort of art to me. The internet has a vast selection of wonderful recipes and there are also loads of books to inspire creativity. I did think, at first, that it might be hard to live vegan maybe I’d miss cheese or be stumped for what to make for dinner and that I would stop enjoying my cuppas, as I wouldn’t like the taste of plant milks. But none of this happened; I found that my concern for the animals was enough to power me through without a single regret. Shopping has become an adventure in ‘what else can I find that’s suitable?’ - as I discover ever more alternatives to what I grew up with. It’s quicker too, with so many aisles to simply miss out! Our first meeting was attended by 10 adults and a baby - we had loads of delicious food and there was a real buzz. I’d love to see you at the next one, on: Thursday 10 April 7 to 8.30 pm Christchurch with St Philip, Cheam Common Rd. Bring some food to share if you can, either home cooked or bought - all vegan, of course! We’ll meet up every second Thursday of each month thereafter, same time, same place. If you can’t make them all, that’s fine. Come whenever you can.We will be upstairs in The Den and, afterwards, for those who’d like, in the North End Tavern across the road from the church. You are welcome to just join us there, if the earlier time is not convenient, from about 8.45 pm. More information from me - carol20754@googlemail. com - or Wendy Edwards 07740 082460. There is also an open facebook group - Worcester Park Vegans - and you may also find us on Meetup. Carol Williams

Charity A long ride for Justice

A Worcester Park mum is planning to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money for a newly-created local charity. Rebecca Vaughan-Spencer is aiming to raise £6,000 for New Malden-based Hope for Justice which campaigns against human trafficking. Her challenge will be to cycle 1000 miles over two weeks in May. Rebecca, who works as a fitness instructor at the Malden Centre said: “Hope for Justice is a campaigning group that has started in New Malden recently. I’m doing this challenge because I watched a film called

Nefarious at the New Malden Baptist Church and I was so distressed to realize that people, real people, with real feelings and emotions were being tricked into leaving their homes and their families for so-called better lives. I’m shocked that this is a reality for many people in 2014. “I care about this and wanted to do something to say no this is wrong and I’m taking a stand. I don’t just want to raise money to help free the victims but also to raise awareness.” Please support Rebecca by donating at her Just Giving Page. www.justgiving.com/rvslandsend-johnogroats-cycle

View from the City Another pointless pension raid

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

The latest populist idea for unemployment was floated last week when Mr Millipede suggested that seemingly endless bountiful fountain of pension pots can be raided yet again for apparent good works elsewhere. Raiding peoples’ savings, be they pensions or just cash, is a last resort and usually a sign of economic incompetence (as we saw in Cyprus) or political theft - as we have seen by politicians like President Kirchner in Argentina, or various domestic politicians of most colours, yes including the Conservatives, and of course Gordon Brown more recently, who see pension savings as an easy way to grab cash. In any fair world, you would think savings from income would be recognised and appreciated - not

abused and raided. However, the Labour proposals last week are yet again signs of the lack of practical experience of politicians in real business or savings in the outside world. You can see that the politicians don’t really understand such things as of course they don’t have to worry about their already

funded pensions. The idea of taxing well off pension pots to fund a job start scheme may make for good sound bites, but just how often have we heard such ideas before? The key mistake is that they will create jobs to fulfil the scheme which, unless soundly based on a business case, will in due course just shrivel away. No the politicians, in this case Labour - but such skill is not restricted to red, have the telescope the wrong way around. What you need to do is encourage the growth of the jobs in the first place, which then will employ the wasted talents of youth currently languishing

in unemployment. Merely starting a job creation scheme is to give most just the hope of a false dawn. No, it would be much better to encourage job creating investment. So develop a scheme such that if a proportion of pension money was directed towards local businesses that could employ locally, then you have a much more constructive scheme. Thus with a hopeful result of: • High net worth pension pots are being seen to be providing extra support for the weaker end of the economy • Companies looking for development capital would have access to such funding • Youth employment can be encouraged as companies start up and grow. Now I appreciate that this is simplistic, but the concept is far more creative than soak the rich and promise a job for a few months. Resonances of The Ides Of March With the Ides of March last weekend I am not sure many of Ukraine’s leaders might see this as an echo from history. The toppling of that dictator led to another painful Roman civil war. We can only hope that this unfortunate country, which seems to be

hanging on the wire dividing East and West, will not suffer a similar fate. Realpolitik means that Russia will have her warm water port, however that does not have to lead to yet again Russia trying to peel away provinces from her neighbours, whether Georgia, Ukraine or Moldova. The difference is that many states signed up to protect the independence of Ukraine, including the UK. Didn’t we sign up for the same with Belgium prior to 1914? Fund Raising Going MAD in Tanzania! by Rachel Cooke

Hello! My name is Rachel Cook, 18, and in April I’m going on a 3 month trip to Musoma, Tanzania as part of a team of 10 with the charity Go MAD, partnered with Tearfund. Our main aim is to serve the community through getting involved in projects that will provide sustainable development to help transform lives plagued by poverty. I am looking to both raise awareness of the problems faced by these people and funds to help me make a difference to their lives. Go MAD (Go Make A Difference) is a small charity that has been working in the community of Musoma, a small town in the north of Tanzania, for 20 years. Founded in 1994 with the building of a cathedral for the Diocese of Mara, the charity has been sending out groups of volunteers from the UK to work in the community in a range of different ways ever since. Through tackling key issues like inadequate housing, nutrition and sanitation (only 12% of the population have access to a toilet), the accessibility of clean water (22 million drink dirty water), affordable healthcare and education (just over half of children aged 5 - 14 attend school) and disease prevention, the charity undertakes work that changes lives and provides more hopeful futures. The team I am in will be continuing with the charity’s long term projects as well as other smaller ones. Currently Go MAD volunteers are building a healthcare centre in Musoma with the principal aim of reducing the number of deaths in childbirth and infant mortality, since at the moment many of the locals cannot afford the bus fare to the nearest hospital. Other projects we’ll be involved in include the building of water tanks and pit latrines to provide clean water and better sanitation and even small brick houses for families; education on preventable illnesses such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid as well as administering healthcare to sufferers and the many orphans the victims leave behind, and teaching in schools and churches. How much we can do depends entirely on how much money we raise. With this in mind I’m doing a Duathlon on 23rd March at Dorney Lake (5k run, 40k cycle, 10k run): if you’d like to sponsor me please go to https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ rachelcookisgoingmadintanzania or leave a donation in the Christ Church Parish Office. Alternatively, bring your car to Christ Church, New Malden between 9.30am and 12.30am on Saturday 29th March so that I can clean it for a suggested donation of £5. All the

money raised will go directly towards the projects rather than my own costs. Money really does go a long way: £950 is enough to build a 15,000 litre water tank for a group of houses, and £1000 can build a pit latrine – both life-changing facilities. If you could contribute, it wouldn’t just be me who’d appreciate it! To follow the team’s activity throughout the trip and see where your money’s going visit http:// rachelcookisgoingmadintanzania.wordpress.com.

Malden Care Scheme

Malden Care Scheme is a thriving local charity designed to serve residents in Malden who may need a helping hand and have no-one to whom they can turn. It was formed nearly 40 years ago when local churches and the Rotary Club combined their efforts to create the service. It’s a simple scheme. Local people from the community provide time and assistance to people in need. The client phones a central number and is given the phone number of the day’s ‘Duty Officer.’ Duty officers take it in turns to stay at home one morning a month and answer their

phone to clients; they then phone one of the volunteers. A volunteer tells the duty officer if they are available. There is no compulsion for any volunteer to undertake a job if it’s not possible for them. Volunteers with cars are very popular. Over the years volunteers have undertaken a huge variety of tasks. The most requested is to be escorted to health appointments and clients have expressed real appreciation of this service. Recent compliments include: Could not be bettered. The driver always makes sure I am taken to the right department in the hospital and ensures that the staff know I am there. Being blind I am dependent upon their good will in this matter and I have only the highest praise and thanks for them. And The service could not have been better if undertaken by a private company. All credit to the volunteers who help. Will always recommend the service to others who may need help. A great service to the community. In recent years volunteers have driven a client to visit the grave of a beloved pet; visited a young man when he was admitted to Kingston hospital and had no friends or family nearby; referred someone who wanted a priest to visit them at home to the appropriate church; taken a man using a wheelchair, together with his young son, Christmas shopping; moved some light furniture round (though the client later changed their mind and wanted it back in the same position!). Although regular jobs can’t be accepted such as planned daily or weekly visits, there are always exceptions. This might include emergency help for a strictly limited period of time. For example, Malden Care undertook to drive someone who had had an accident and was temporarily incapacitated to visit her disabled child while waiting for a taxi card to be issued.

Supported lodgings in action

SECOND NATURE LANDSCAPES LTD.

In a lovely house just outside Tolworth, Sarah and Luke live with their two youngest children, their pet dog and Michael – a lodger who is renting their spare room through YMCA LSW’s Young People’s Supported Lodgings; a housing scheme that places young people aged 16-25 with hosts who have a spare room. The YPSL scheme is designed for young people who are working and/or in education, but who struggle to afford the high costs on the private renting market. Sarah admits that she was anxious about letting a stranger into their home at first. However, Michael soon became “just a friendly chap that lives in our spare room”. Sarah states that becoming a host was easy. “Zoe is very approachable and explained the process well Michael has now been our lodger since September 2013”. To others considering becoming a host, Sarah says: “Just give it a go! Remember, you can always change your mind if it doesn’t work out and the support is there if you need it”.

Health

Phobic responses

It is 07:37 on a Monday morning on platform one of the crowded, New Malden station. The Waterloo bound train is pulling into the station. It stops and the doors slide open. In the silent jostling you are faced with a wall of bodies packed in like sardines It started earlier this morning, but the rising sense of panic is increasing now. Heart beating faster, breathing becoming more rapid, mouth dry, a tension and a sense of sickness in the stomach. You are unable to find words to express the sense of being smothered, as if by a black blanket. Sheer terror. This is a phobic response, in this case claustrophobia. Phobia is derived from the Greek word for fear and fear is purely information. How we label that information can lead to a distorted perception of the event that has triggered that response. Anyone who suffers from this kind of physiological response can have their lives severely compromised, and in many cases it might have been a condition that has existed for many years. ‘Stupid’, ‘ridiculous’, ‘pathetic’, are words often used by sufferers to describe their phobias - on a conscious level they know that their reactions make no sense, but they just can’t seem to stop themselves going into that downward spiral of terror. It’s unlikely we will ever truly enjoy our daily commute, but it certainly shouldn’t be a journey of terror. Hypnosis is extremely effective way of dealing with these unhelpful responses and even just one session can resolve many phobias. If you can identify with any of these kinds of responses, regardless of the event or environment that triggers them, why not contact me or any suitably qualified hypnotherapist to explore a solution to an unnecessary problem? Cake and Bake

Banana, Walnut and Chocolate Cake

Bananas ripen so quickly that it’s easy to find yourself with a several left over needing to be used up. Many people don’t like the taste or smell of ripe bananas though so they often go to waste. However, when baked in a cake they lose their slightly sour smell and give a subtle taste, which is particularly delicious when combined with chocolate and walnuts. 100g butter at room temperature 100g light brown sugar 25g caster sugar (white or golden) 2 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence 3-4 ripe bananas (depending on size), mashed 175g plain flour 1½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

½ tsp cinnamon 100g Walnuts (Chopped or whole) 75g Dark chocolate chopped or coarsely grated Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C for fan oven or gas mark 4. Grease a 900g loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper Cream the sugar and butter together until fluffy Add the eggs and the vanilla essence and then the bananas and mix in well Carefully mix in the flour and bicarb, baking powder and cinnamon so there are no lumps, then fold through the dark chocolate and most of the walnuts. Pour the batter into the loaf tin and bake for 45-55 minutes until a skewer through the centre comes out clean. Leave on a rack until cool before serving to allow time for the chocolate to set. Sprinkle with icing sugar and a few more chopped walnuts. .

Mary's Story

For too many years Mary had been 'managing' by herself. Fiercely independent, she was just about making it through each day. Her daughter had tried many times to persuade Mary to get someone to help her with a bit of companionship, some home help, just a friendly face popping in from time to time to check she was okay. Mary point blankly refused. It took a fall and a brief spell in hospital for her poor daughter to decide enough was enough and regardless of mums procrastinations she made enquiries to get some help. Home Instead came to the rescue in the form of Sue, a fifty something local lady who lived round the corner from Mary. Sue's gently and patient nature matched her perfectly with Mary's reluctance. Sue visited Mary twice a week for a number of weeks gently breaking down barriers that Mary had so fervently put up.

Each visit Sue made, Mary unveiled a small piece of herself. Although her short-term memory was starting to fail her, Mary's recollections of wartime and rationing were still so vivid. During one of their chats, Mary revealed that she had won several awards for her ballroom dancing in her youth and even had a few trophies buried deep in the back of a cupboard somewhere. Knowing the area, Sue suggested they attend a tea dance, in the hall round the corner one Thursday.

"If I'm going again next week, I’ll need to have my hair done!" ~ Mary

In the hope to generate some enthusiasm but Mary wasn't keen. Each time the dance was mentioned, it fell on deaf ears!

Until one day Mary, quite reluctantly, agreed to give it a try - just this once. Mary was in a particularly bad mood that day and sat at the edge of the dance floor, stony faced throughout, and peering over her frown every so often to observe what was going on. Sue had started to question if this had been a good idea. After returning Mary home, Sue put on her coat to leave and as she got to the door, Mary looked up at Sue and said, "If I'm going again next week, I’ll need to have my hair done!" Mary now has her hair done every week, like she used to, in anticipation of Thursday. And with Sue's help, she has new dresses, and a comfy pair of shoes to dance in - well you can't Waltz in slippers now can you!!

Community The War Memorial by Robin Gill

On Sunday 27th July, a new plaque will be unveiled on the memorial with the following wording: THIS PLAQUE IS TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENARY OF THE GREAT WAR 1914 1919 AND IN MEMORY OF ALL MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES INCLUDING POLICE FIRE AND AMBULANCE SERVICES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY SINCE THE END OF BOTH WARS LAID BY THE MALDEN AND COOMBE BRANCH OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WE WILL REMEMBER THEM A committee has been formed to raise the £4500 needed to pay for the plaque and its installation, and collections will be held in New Malden’s High Street and other locations, as well as other fund raising events. If you wish to make a donation, The Donation can be sent to the RBL Secretary Mrs Mary Gillett, 34 Long Walk New Malden Surrey KT3 3EJ. and made payable to the “British Legion Malden and Coombe Branch” A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MEMORIAL At a public meeting held in New Malden on 18th March 1919, it was proposed that a public hall be erected in remembrance of those from the area who had died during the Great War. This hall was to accommodate a social club, a free library, and a swimming bath. Plaques were to be placed in the hall bearing the names of the fallen. (Old) Malden and Coombe were already arranging permanent memorials, and the 50 persons present organised several committees to be set up to investigate the proposals. An appeal for funds was put forward in New Malden (which hoped to raise £500) to cover the cost of peace festivities, and a memorial. Many ideas were put forward, some not as popular as others. A past president of Malden Wanderers CC (Dr Russell Davison) proposed that the club’s ground, which was then situated behind the police station in Burlington Road, should be turned into a Memorial Public Garden. Needless to say, this did not go down well at the cricket club, who suggested alternatives, and eventually a Memorial Garden was laid out in Beverley Park.

Meanwhile the New Malden district could still not decide what form their memorial was to take. At a public meeting at the Graham Spicer Institute on 19th February, the majority decided in favour of a public hall and club for ex-servicemen, and another committee was set up. By the end of 1920, things were looking bleak in New Malden. At a District Council meeting it was announced that two appeals for funds for the erection of a Memorial Hall had failed, and the response to the second appeal had been so bad, that the committee had resigned.Mr Dicker suggested that some form of monument be erected in front of the council offices, and this idea was well supported and a further committee put in place. Nothing further happened until a Council meeting was held on 8th July 1924, when the chairman (Mr. Carr Dodds) stated it was “high time” something was done to provide the War Memorial “for which funds were subscribed some years ago”, and that the Council Many congratulations to the Village Voice for reaching its 100th edition! “should agree to prepare the site where a board had for so long been exhibited stating it was the site for the War Memorial” a month later the council’s finance committee recommended to the Council that they approve the surveyor’s plan for the layout of the site which involved moving the front wall back to a crescent shape and the area to be paved with artificial stone and laid out with seats. One councillor commented that the memorial appeal had raised £100 in eight years, and more money was to be spent levelling the site, which seemed strange. He proposed placing the Memorial at the tram stop at the Fountain, but the idea was defeated and the following week the clearing of the site was begun. The stone base was fixed in place the following month (October 1924). As the cost of the memorial was £150, £50 still had to be raised by public subscription. The adult population of New Malden was approximately 8500, and only 32 had subscribed to raise the £100 already received. Fortunately, the remaining funds were raised, and the unveiling of the War Memorial took place on 8th November 1924 at 3pm. There was a guard of honour furnished by 50 men of the East Surrey Regiment who had marched from Kingston via Coombe Lane. At the ex-servicemen’s club they were joined by the British Legion and other ex-servicemen, and at the Parish Church, the clergy, minister, choir, and members of the council followed the procession. The scouts and guides were also well represented. The Chairman of the Council in his address, stated that over 1000 men from Malden and Coombe had served in the War, and then proceeded to read out the names of the 255 men of the district who had been killed on active service (the names were not yet inscribed on the Memorial). The memorial was unveiled by Private F Jackson (late Royal Welsh Fusiliers) who had been blinded in Belgium in 1918. A hymn was sung, followed by the sounding of the Last Post, the presentation of arms, and Reveille, followed by prayers. The Memorial was handed over to the Council “and its successors for all time, to maintain it as a sacred trust ,and preserve it as the outward visible sign of honour of those gallant men and women who fell in the Great War” Floral tributes were laid, and the benediction was said by the Roman Catholic priest. The National Anthem concluded the ceremony. The absence of names on the Memorial was discussed by the committee later that month, where it was decided that a Roll Of Honour be instituted and the cost of the scheme be raised by the public. The names of those who had fallen were inscribed on the Memorial the following year (1925) During the course of the Second World War the Council Offices were hit by enemy bombs the damage that they did to the Memorial can still be seen today. Immediately after the end of the War in Europe in September 1945 a public meeting was held with a view to building a community centre as a memorial to those

who had died in the conflict. An appeal was made for £25,000 but the scheme did not proceed. In 1952 the British Legion, and the Community Association requested that a bronze plaque be placed on the Memorial commemorating those that died in the 2nd World War before the Memorial was rededicated later in the year. In 1953, twenty nine years after the Memorial was unveiled, the Council decided to have the area floodlit for Remembrance Week (8th- 14th November). The site was redeveloped in the late 1980s. The Memorial was undisturbed, and is maintained by the Council, who receive a small grant from the War memorial Trust. In September 1996 the local Neighbourhood Committee were asked by various parties (Civic Society, British Legion etc) to look at recording the names of those who had died as a result of enemy action in the second world war. After much delay, and thanks to research work done by a few individuals, new bronze plaques were affixed to the Memorial, and a rededication ceremony took place in May 1998. On 24th April 2008, a Service of Dedication took place for a memorial plaque commemorating, Lieutenant Humphrey Osbaldston Brooke Firman VC at the War Memorial. The memorial stands 12 foot high and is of Portland Stone in three tiers. It is a model of the Cenotaph in London. On the centre is a crusader’s sword pointing downwards, and above it a laurel wreath.

Baked Cheesecake I

This baked cheesecake is a must for chocolate lovers – it has a really rich flavour without being too sweet. It’s perfect to serve as a dessert or sweet treat over the Easter weekend as you can make it in advance. Keep the cooled cheesecake covered in the fridge for up to 2 days. Remove from the fridge 30 minutes before serving. Serves 10 Ready in 1 ½ hours, plus chilling and cooling 225g digestive biscuits, finely crushed 75g unsalted butter, melted 1 tbsp cocoa powder 200g good quality plain chocolate, broken into pieces 400g soft cheese, such as Philadelphia 100g caster sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 3 medium eggs, beaten 300ml soured cream Cocoa powder to dust Chocolate sauce, to serve (optional) 1Mix together the crushed biscuits, melted butter and cocoa powder and press evenly into the base of a well buttered 23cm round spring-form or deep fluted flan tin. Chill the base in the fridge. 2 Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water then remove from the heat and leave to cool for 10 minutes. 3 In a large bowl beat together the soft cheese, caster sugar and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs then fold in the soured cream. Spoon about half the mixture over the chilled biscuit base. 4 Gently fold the melted chocolate into the remaining mixture (it will be quite thick) and drop spoonfuls of this mixture on top of the vanilla layer.

Teen Malden

Pressures of Social Media.... by Diaz Gillard-Brockhouse

Nowadays, nearly every teenager has access to social media sights, like facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. In some ways, these websites can be a really useful tool: facebook can help you to communicate with friends who perhaps you don’t see so often, Twitter can help you to express your thoughts and feelings and Tumblr can really help aspiring photographers. On the other hand, these sites can also pile an incredible amount of pressure on teenagers, both girls and boys. Firstly, and I think probably most obviously, with every social media site comes bullying. It isn’t really to do with pressure, but I think this is a big issue for teenagers. Some people of my age seem to assume an alter ego behind a computer screen, and it’s because of this that cyber-bullying has become a problem. My generation seem to be scared of saying things to people face to face, and therefore take to writing hurtful things on the internet instead. I think it’s because the bully feels as if they’re anonymous; they are not with the people who their actions are affecting to see or experience the consequences. I think it gives the bully a sense of power to be able to say things behind a computer screen, as it becomes easier to make the victim feel weak. But infact, in many ways, saying things online has far worse consequences than ‘picking a fight’. Normally, if you said something to somebody in person, it wouldn’t escalate into a fullblown punch-up – not at my age anyway - but nearly always, cyberbullying is an incredibly serious criminal offence. What you say online is there forever – even though you can delete things, there is always traces left behind. So, I think teens should be very careful about what they say on any social media, as things like tweets and facebook statuses can come back to haunt you. An example is Paris Brown, who was employed in 2013 as a youth police and crime commissioner for Kent Police. She resigned after anti-gay and racist tweets were found on her old twitter account. This shows how things you do on social media really can affect your future opportunities. My second point is to do with pressure - body image – especially for girls. This is mainly to do with the social media site Tumblr, along with magazines and TV adverts. Many teenage girls feel intense pressure to be

64

‘perfect’, but what does that mean? Personally I don’t compare myself to models or celebrities because most of the time they’re airbrushed and completely edited, so you’re creating an unrealistic goal. Tumblr has many ‘thinspiration’ pages – advertising anorexic as perfect, creating an incredibly unrealistic president of what girls should look like. Sometimes, the desire these girls have to look ‘perfect’ becomes dangerous, and I think that’s really tragic. We should all be comfortable in our own skin, and although it’s hard, it’s possible, but in order to be happy with yourself, you have to ignore these sites and take on the mindset that things you see in magazines and on the TV are usually not representative of that woman’s true self. So, I do think that social media is a great thing; I have accounts just like any other teenager. But, I just want to portray to others that the pressures of these sites can sometimes become too much. Never say something online you wouldn’t want your grandma to hear (!) and remember that you are you, and nobody else, so don’t aspire to be sometime you weren’t destined to be.

herbs, the bees absolutely love it when it’s in flower. Our cat is a fan as well, if that’s any recommendation. I favour other perennials chives, tarragon, thyme and sage (although I’ve never found a regular use for it), because they seem to grow without the need for encouragement. Hand on heart, I haven’t much of a clue when it comes to herbs and cooking. To my jaded sinuses, everything pretty much goes with anything - which might explain why I prefer the garden to the

His and Herbs

by Derek Thompson From time to time, a chat about plants or local history will develop into a neighbourly cuppa. Over the years, I’ve grown accustomed to that bewildered look when I reply, “Peppermint tea for me, please.” Especially when I follow it up by producing - magician style - a little bag of dried leaves. I used to buy it in bulk, but it’s so easy to grow that there’s really no need for most of the year. I’ve become a bit of a devotee, preferring a 50 / 50 blend of peppermint and Moroccan mint, and have been known to wax lyrical about the history, benefits and uses of mentha piperita and its horticultural cousins. It’s the point at which Anne will often look at her watch and drink up. Another easy herb to grow - because it too has all the enthusiasm of a weed on overtime - is marjoram. An old wooden vegetable box, lined and filled with soil, makes a great portable container. And, like so many

kitchen. Curly leafed parsley seems to do well in pots, so long as it’s not over-watered; likewise for lavender (very nice in shortbread, but make sure it doesn’t become too woody by trimming it back at the end of the year) and rosemary, which is great for roast potatoes (see, I can be taught). We did try growing coriander a few times, but it never really worked out, so we transferred our allegiance to Vietnamese coriander. The plant needs a lot of water and I find it has an absolutely gorgeous aroma with a hint of lime.

The other herb that, frankly, has let us down many times is basil. It doesn’t seem to matter what we do, whether it’s more watering or less watering, indoors or outdoors, feeding the soil or leaving it undisturbed. The basil always seems to check out early. However, the fact that it’s another ‘plant of interest’ to the cat may be a factor. Most herbs have also been traditional remedies. In my quest to elevate peppermint beyond the humble humbug, I’ve learned it is caffeine free, has a calming effect on the stomach and digestion, and can be used for soothing headaches. I also read - in the library, no less - that steam from peppermint tea is good for the sinuses, which is not to be sniffed at. (Not until you’ve inhaled the minty steam, anyway.) There’s more: peppermint has antiseptic properties and is a remedy for travel sickness (when you don’t have ginger to hand). It’s also great for cooling skin irritations or inflammations. Do try it on a small area of skin first to check there’s no adverse reaction. I draw the line at chamomile tea, though. Is it just me or does it taste like straw?

A Malden Man Dolly

by Raj Randhawa I used to walk past her house on Blagdon Road every weekend. Stood in her front garden as if plucked from another era and plonked in the middle of this modern suburbia,

she was dressed in layers of sweaters and cardigans, with crimplene trousers above her fur lined bedroom slippers. She always made an effort to look presentable. Her thinning grey hair would be brushed to the side, a flowery clip holding it in place. She had a warm, toothless smile. Her oversized fingers were frozen in awkward directions and her leathery agespotted skin told a thousand stories, and then some. Most people would pass her by without so much as a glance or a hello, while she followed them with her eyes. Whenever I saw her, I was usually in a rush, either late taking the kids to one of their activities or rushing them home for their dinner. I would sweep by with a friendly smile and a hello.

One day I stopped for a chat. She warmly greeted me and called me mate. Her name was Dolly (short for Dorothy). She was ninety-seven and had been living in that house for sixty years. Times had changed, she had said. Once she had known everyone on the street, but they had all gone. I guessed no one had managed to keep up with her. Nowadays everyone kept to themselves and they couldn’t even be bothered to say hello to her. She was very chatty and talked about her son and daughter, as if I knew them. She was one of those tough old girls, built to last. Nothing seemed to faze her. Fiercely independent, she had lived alone ever since her husband had passed. She flatly refused to leave her home. She told me she mostly ate sandwiches or soups. I promised I would bring some food over and asked if she liked Indian food. She said she would eat anything and that it would be lovely to have a hot meal. I gave her my mobile number in case she ever needed anything. I started visiting Dolly fairly regularly. Upon knocking at the door, I would follow her progress through the curtained window. Sometimes I could make out the top of her head peering over the back of her armchair, in front of the TV. Sometimes she wouldn’t move and I would fear the worst. It turned out that she had dozed off. Usually she would hear me and rise slowly, grab

her walker and shuffle in slow motion towards the front door. She would always be pleased to see me. I would ask if she needed anything from the shops, as she wasn’t mobile. I would buy her a few essentials like margarine, jam, milk, eggs, bread, soup, The Daily Mirror. She was adamant about paying me for anything I bought. I quickly learned that I couldn’t get away with not taking her money. She was steadfast. I would invariably be forced to take some payment, but managed to take less than I had spent. I took her cooked meals, which she gratefully accepted. In the autumn I would walk by and have to wrestle the broom from her deceivingly strong hands to finish brushing the leaves in the front garden, in to a tidy pile. After a few visits I accepted her invitation to go inside. It was like stepping back fifty years in time. The living room was warm and the TV would always be on. I would sit and listen to her talk about her husband, her family, the neighbours and her dressmaking. Dolly had been a seamstress and dressmaker all her life. She still had her Singer sewing machine. I knew without even looking inside the case, that it must have been in pristine condition. She wouldn’t ever let me take her tray back to the kitchen and I would never accept her offer of a cup of tea. It wouldn’t have been right. We got on well, Dolly

and I. We obviously didn’t have a great deal in common but she enjoyed my company. I guess having lived alone, she was less discerning about the company she kept. During one visit, she walked me around the living room, pointing out loved ones in black and white photos on the walls. There was a photo of her with her husband. She must have been in her fifties. They were both smiling. I wondered how different her days would be, if he were still alive. On another occasion I knocked to see if she needed anything and I noticed a peculiar smell coming from inside. I asked if I could come in to check. I found the gas on, without a flame. I quickly opened up the doors and windows and told her to be more careful. Some weeks later, I was walking up towards Dolly’s house on the way to my car and I could see her from a distance, standing at the gate. There was something strange about her. As I approached, I could see exactly half of Dolly’s face on one side, was a swollen undiluted Ribena purple. It was as if someone had taken a cricket bat to her face. It was shocking. I stopped to ask her what had happened. She said that some thugs had broken in, kidnapped her, held her captive in a flat for days and had beaten her. I couldn’t believe my ears. I asked if the police had caught them and she said the police hadn’t done anything. Later, I phoned her daughter to ask what had happened and she said that Dolly had a bad fall and had landed on her face. The story she told me was down to her diminishing mental faculties. Dolly eventually became bed bound, and I was unable to visit her again. As I wasn’t a family member the visiting care nurses wouldn’t let me in. Some months later, I noticed a ‘For Sale’ sign outside her house. I knew. I sat in my car and felt genuinely sad. Dolly and I had only known each other for a short while, but we had spent some nice times together. Even if only on a trivial level, there had been a positive human connection. I phoned Dolly’s daughter to pay my condolences. Recently I walked past the house with my daughter and she asked “Daddy, where’s Dolly gone?” “She’s gone to Heaven, darling” I said. What else do you say to a seven year old?
