Dear Readers

Well, July’s been the usual frantic whirl of festivals, fortnights, events and end of term ‘tear jerkers’. Added to the mix this year has been our eldest daughter’s last weeks at Primary school. Gone are the days when you get your certificate (if you’re lucky) and your shirt signed… The current expectations – in addition to the aforementioned - are for hoodies with everyone’s names on the back of them and glossy colour Yearbooks. As I write the heatwave seems set to continue so the hoodies haven’t yet had a great deal of use. By the way – if you’re ever wanting personalised clothing printed I can’t recommend Bruce Elliot – at the Plough – enough. Great prices, service and quality – and patience! So the Yearbook was certainly a labour of love. But it was worth it to see (through our tears) their excited faces flicking through the finished book, recognising faces from pictures from the last 7 years and reading the lovely messages from their teachers and staff, working out whose baby photo is whose, and where they fit in the crossword. And as the uniform to the next stage of her life is already hanging in the wardrobe I, along I am sure with all of you who have children going into Reception or starting pre-school in September, those also leaving Year 6, or Year 11/13, or graduating, will (I am sure) also be wondering ‘where on earth have the years gone!’ Thanks (not!) to my lovely friend who told me the way to stop yourself from weeping is to chew inside of cheeks… it DIDN’T WORK!! (sob!) Anyway, as always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

Community

New Malden Residents’ Association

Residents’ Association – Boring Huh!!!! Well Yes – it is some of the time. Committee Meetings, Meetings, with Councillors – Planning Meetings – Forms – Pages to wade through when you are dealing with any type of authority – a huge amount of words to get through when reading up on new proposed legislation. BUT – it can be stimulating, educational, empowering, surprising and an eye opener. We live in a Democracy don’t we?? Which means that as members of the public, we will be listened to and our views will be held in great respect by those who run the country and our own locality, and our opinions will be sought when policies and changes are to be made. WRONG!!! We have to fight to be heard by our Council, let alone Government, and we have to make sure that Councillors hear us loud and clear. If we don’t shout – they won’t hear. If we don’t make our voice heard,

we cannot have an input into any changes that affect our Community. Over the past years we have seen building developments that look like they have been drawn on the pack on the proverbial “matchbox”, a refurbished High Street that really was a disgrace, proposed developments that have taken no account of the infrastructure, a proliferation of Betting Shops (six now in total in New Malden), cleanliness that has been noticeable only by its absence, and “improvements” (for instance Tolworth and Kingston Market Place) that would be laughable if it were not for the huge amount of money spent on them, and not much notice taken of places like New Malden. We have been told endlessly over the past few years that we, as residents and rate/income tax payers will have a say in what happens. But as so often, it is only when the public’s outcry becomes so vociferous that peace and order may be breached, something, is done. Kingston Council in the past has largely ignored its residents (communication not seeming to be high on its agenda), but the tide is beginning to turn. Well – even though our Residents’ Association has not always been successful in its undertakings, we are becoming a force to reckon with. We have made useful contacts with Councillors, other Residents’ Associations, the National Organisation of Residents’ Associations and local Business people and we have had an input in some local undertakings. SO – don’t wait for someone else to do something about what bugs you, join us and do something with us, for us (all of us) and by us!!! New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents Association.... Please see left for joining details.

New Malden History

a long way, and you made sure any neighbours either old, bereaved, or just lonely were managing okay. Allotments sprang up on all available land, and we were encouraged to “dig for victory”.

What to do? by Robin Gill

Nothing to watch Television began in November 1936, but you could count the number of receivers in Malden on the fingers of one hand (the receivers cost around 100 guineas [£105 today]). This was the equivalent of six months salary, so way outside most families. There was one channel, and programmes were broadcast on Monday to Saturday from 3pm -4pm and 9pm-10pm. BBC radio was divided between National and Regional programmes and contained talks, light and chamber music, variety shows, brass bands, plays and concerts. The BBC also broadcast events such as the opening of the new Forth road bridge and that years Charity Shield football match. Additionally there were many sports clubs in operation, the British Legion, political associations, the Grafton and New Malden Clubs, Horticultural Society, Oddfellows and Rechabites plus many youth groups both connected with local churches, and secular.

Nowadays we have an incredible amount of entertainment available to us. Plays, opera, ballet, films, television, radio, music in various forms, games, the internet, all available in the privacy of our own homes, not to mention various sports and recreations in the great outdoors. We are spoilt for choice, eighty years ago it was more a question of making your own amusement, and people were happy doing just that. People will still say that they have nothing to do, and that they are bored, but either side of World War II, the population didn’t just sit indoors and moan about what Germany might do or about rationing, there was what was called the “community spirit”. What little food you had, (by ingenious methods) you made go

Look and learn When Malden and Coombe became a borough on 23rd September 1936, one job the council took on with relish was the education of the locals through talks and lectures. The lectures were free and held at the School Clinic in Westbury Road opposite the Baptist Church. The Mayor Charles Speirs was in charge, and the first one seems to have been about local history particularly Malden and Surrey led by Miss Marion Dale on 24th February 1937, sadly no details of this talk survive. The next lecture entitled “The Child and Nutrition” took place in April the same year, this time at the Wesley Hall (now the Methodist Church) again chaired by the Mayor, the speaker was Sir Percy Alden a former MP and social reformer, and very much in favour of the benefits of milk for school children. Free school milk would not become compulsory until 1944, later, it was withdrawn later first by Harold Wilson, and then by Margaret Thatcher. The lecture was followed by a 22 minute documentary film entitled “Enough To Eat?” which examined the connection of poverty with malnutrition and the

illnesses which could result from malnourishment ,narrated by Julian Huxley. This showed that even an affluent area like Malden could still have pockets of hardship. Unfortunately, the speaker, Sir Percy a great campaigner, was killed by a flying bomb in London seven years later while waiting for a bus. Vegetables for victory With the onset of war these lectures stopped, and information relayed to the people of Malden became more instructional and practical. For example the library in Kingston Road showed a film entitled “Gardens At War” not a documentary showing the difference between a British and a German garden, but a film showing how to grow more food in gardens and allotments. A large amount of open and park land had been turned over to allotments, and the population were encouraged to grow more vegetables at home. The film was in “natural” colour which was a novelty at that time, and the public were encouraged to bring their friends, as we were all in it together. The film was issued by “The Plant Protection Society” and included sections on

cooking vegetables, and gardening from “the women’s point of view”, which encouraged the formation of a women’s gardening association. Wasting soil was helping Hitler, they were told. Instruction on spadework was given, and the preparation of soil which should be done in November/ December rather than left until Easter. Rational advice Of course many items were on ration, and Lord Woolton (Minister Of Food) had come forward with a points food plan which gave a more varied diet including can meats, and an increase in fat and sugar allowances. The new ration book which was pink was available on production of the old book, and the coupons could be exchanged anywhere meaning you didn’t have to register with a particular shop. 16 points were available over 4 weeks, and the 16 points could buy you for example, ½ lb of ox tongue, 4oz of sardines, and a lb of beans. The population could bulk up for the oncoming winter months. In Malden the new books were available at the First Aid Posts in Burlington Road, Manor Farm Old Malden, or Vale House in Kingston

10

Vale. Alternatively, there was a supply at the Housing Estate Office in Douglas Road, or the Food Office in Cambridge Road. Notices advertising the new rations book were posted all over the town and on main notice boards, but you had to attend before 17th November when the scheme started. So now you knew how to grow the produce, and how to obtain extra rations for your meals. The next step was to teach people how to cook with the ingredients available for the job “on the kitchen front!” These War-Time Cookery Demonstrations had initially started in gas and electricity showrooms throughout the country. The early demonstrations seem to concentrate more on the economy of their products rather than the meals themselves. But gradually those attending learnt about “tasty dishes from humble fishes”. It was amazing what you could do with a herring. Fry or grill it, a herring and tomato pie, a covered herring pie, herring and stuffed tomato, herring with macaroni, potted herring, the list was endless. It was not surprising that

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

these recipes came from the Herring Industry Board. In Malden local demonstrations were held at 11am and 3pm at Woolworths in the High Street (now Poundland) and various Civic Cafes, together with Church and local Halls. In the latter part of the war, companies realised the advertising power of these demonstrations, and businesses like Cadburys and Birds started their presentations using their own products. Recreational values Of course, it was not all instructional items that the public were advised on. There was a garden party and fair in aid of the prisoners of war fund, held on Plough Green on 26th June 1943 opened by Mr CH Middleton (of BBC fame).Mr Middleton was one of the earliest gardeners featured by the BBC starting in 1931 and by 1940 attracted 3.5 million listeners. He was the wartime Alan Titchmarsh, and died from a heart attack outside his house in Surbiton in September 1945. In the same year as part of the

“Holidays at Home” programme, two concerts were held at the Burlington Road Schools. Firstly “Operatic Memories” Grave and Gay by the New Malden Cooperative Musical Society, and this was followed a week later by George Bernard Shaw’s play St Joan performed by the New Malden Co-operative Dramatic Group. As can be seen from the above, the Council placed a great emphasis on educating the people of Malden especially during the war years. Whilst it can be argued that they were only doing what was expected of them, and it made no difference to the outcome of the war, it is a fact that in times of stress the population looks to their leaders for guidance. In this small community, efforts were made to show a united home front, and to teach the people to help themselves. All the details for these events come from the collection of notices formerly displayed, and then retained by New Malden Library, and now held by the Kingston archives.

Thank you! For supporting Funday Sunday

The Malden fortnight events really bring New Malden together as a village community and that is really in evidence at the annual Funday Sunday in aid of the Lunchbowl Network in Beverley Park, with incredible rewards donated by the Malden Centre and huge support and match funding This year, we enjoyed a lovely day of races and highland games and served up drinks and delicious food and snacks with everyone picnicing in the park on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The Barbeque eith donated burgers and sausages from the real butchers and amazing Korean cuisine as well as a very busy pimms and beer tent kept everyone happy! Wimbledon Tennis final and the grand prix was also on for the sports fans. This year once again we were joined in our fundraising by Korea Foods. They fed a huge waiting crowd delivious korean cuisine and donated all their profits plus some extra! To pass £500 to Lunchbowl. The day itself raised over £5600 which will feed over 16,000 children! We are incredibly grateful to Korea Foods, Barclays Bank and our other local sponsors for helping to make the day a huge success but especially to the wonderful New Malden community!

From New Malden to the West Bank

In August Nikki Ray, a recent Human Rights Law graduate from New Malden, is travelling to Israel and occupied Palestine to spend three months as a human rights monitor. Nikki is taking part in the international Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). The programme’s aim is to support all those affected by the ongoing conflict and to work for an end to the occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories. EAPPI is based on impartial principles, meaning they do not take sides in the conflict, however they advocate for a just peace based on international law. Nikki will be supporting both Palestinian and Israeli peace groups. Along with other EAPPI colleagues she will provide a protective presence

for communities under threat of harassment and violence by monitoring the situation and reporting any human rights violations to international bodies like the United Nations. From day to day Nikki may be monitoring Israeli check points and any demonstrations, accompanying Palestinian children who are frequently harassed by Israeli settlers on their way to school or being an international presence during house evictions or demolitions of Palestinians’ homes. ‘The Israel-Palestine conflict is a very complicated one. I hope to bring a human face to the realities of the occupation and make it a visible issue for people in the UK.’ says Nikki. ‘I feel that only by going to the West Bank will I understand daily the struggle that people young and old endure.’ The EAPPI programme is managed by the World Council of Churches internationally and by Quaker Peace and Social Witness in the UK and Ireland. The first EAPPI monitors went to Israel-Palestine in 2002 after church leaders in Jerusalem urged for a non-violent international presence in the region. Over a decade later the programme continues to be successful with much evidence suggesting that the international presence EAPPI offers encourages both Palestinians and Israelis who wish for peace and is highly appreciated and valuable. A crucial component of the programme is advocacy done back in the UK and over twenty other participating countries. On her return Nikki will be sharing her experiences and the stories of the people she met by hosting a number of talks and events across south-west London. If you are interested in hosting a talk or hearing from Nikki whilst she is in Israel-Palestine do email nikki.eappi@gmail.com.

The Freedom Runners

My name is Mimi Anderson I’m an ultra runner from Kent who loves running distances over 100 miles – preferably in one go. I have known Jenny for quite a few years now as her brother is married to my sister! In 2011 I was looking for a big project to get my teeth into. I was racing in South Africa so asked a few of my equally mad South African friends if they had any bright ideas of routes I could run. There were a few suggestions but one in particular caught my attention – The Freedom Trail in South Africa, a 2,350km route starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Paarl just outside Cape Town – this sounded like the challenge I had been looking for, time to look into it more closely. This challenge was way too big to tackle on my own so I contacted Samantha Gash an Australian ultra runner who I knew through facebook. On 26th August 2012 I brought up the subject of running the ridiculous distance of 2,350km across the Freedom Trail in South Africa – her face said all I needed to know. Since then Samantha and I have had endless Skype calls, emails flying backwards and forwards to establish what you know today as the Freedom Runners.

SECOND NATURE LANDSCAPES LTD.

Both of us knew that if we were to take on a challenge as big as this we wanted to raise money to help improve the lives of South African girls and women, it took 8 months of hard work and discussion to identify the cause we wanted to raise money for before we went public, and it was fantastic when the NGO Save The Children agreed to come on board to support us. On the 25th September Samantha and I will be running approximately 80km a day over 32 days. That’s 64 back to back marathons! The route will take us to some of the most beautiful places in South Africa. This will be the biggest challenge either of us has undertaken to date but it has become so much more than just about the physical challenge. Our goal is to raise £30,000 to set up a social enterprise business in the Free State of South Africa employing about a dozen women to manufacture re-usable feminine hygiene products that will be distributed at a low cost to the schoolgirls in the community. Once the girls reach puberty, 1 in 3 will not attend school during their periods as they are unable to afford to buy sanitary pads; instead they will stay at home using old rags, newspaper, sometimes nothing at all. They will miss out on approximately 5 days of school each month – 60 days missed each year and many eventually dropping out of education altogether. By setting up the social enterprise business it will enable the girls to remain in education giving them the opportunity of a better future and that of their children. If you’d like to pledge your support, you can here www.pozible.com/project/183111#description Thank you! Mimi www.marvellousmimi.com

s your mattress over 7 years old, saggy or just not as comfortable as it used to be? Putting off replacing it can lead to disturbed sleep, morning tiredness, stiff neck and back ache. In fact, it’s the main reason for lack of sleep for most people – they just don’t realize it. Buying a new mattress might seem like an expense you can manage without but it’s one of the most valuable things you can do to improve your health and general well being.

View from the City US corporate war chest ready and waiting by Justin Urquhart Stewart

for business has primarily been in the US defence market. Then we have engineering companies like AMEC, medical technology with Smith & Nephew, leading microchip developer ARM holdings and of course certain financial services companies. Remember that Asda was snapped up by Walmart. Now this is not just going to be a UK thing, as there are many more excellent businesses and brands across the EU that would be very attractive. However, as many have discovered before, hostile takeovers and sometimes even the seemingly amiable ones, are less of a feature on the continent. Target companies suddenly have an amazing ability to become state treasures or rather ‘strategic assets’ or in the case of Danone, the yoghurt maker ‘strategic defence assets’ - I always thought those fruit cornered yogurts were potentially lethal. Of course we don’t seem to have that trouble in the UK as just about anything is for sale at the right price! This certainly is going to create a defensive line under many valuations as the possibilities of takeovers at premium prices are always very appealing to investors. This may seem very flattering but strategically for Britain it would mean that even more of our companies could be losing their UK focus and base of management and leaving key investment decsions to management elsewhere in the world. To the Americans you can also add some of the Chinese potential investors who have a similar problem investing their reserves in the US, and find the UK more open for such approaches especially in our infrastructure (although I don’t really put Weetabix into that category). However, they may take a different view if this island of ours parked off the North West coast of Europe decides to leave the largest trading bloc in the world.

One of the features of the US recovery from the financial crisis has been the growth in the cash piles amongst many of the corporates. Yes, we have seen some using their cash for rising dividends (American companies have never been so dividend orientated as their British cousins), and some even handing cash back to shareholders where they, quite responsibly, feel that they cannot find a better use for their shareholders’ monies. Others have been buying their shares back (always a sign of a lack of imagination by management) - this has now reached an astonishing annualised rate of $400bn, which is the equivalent of 2.5% of US GDP. The idea of the scheme, although sounding generous, is in fact to boost earnings per share and therefore enhance the value of executive share options - so not quite as generous as some would have you believe. What had been missing though was much sign of companies using their cash piles for reinvestment, or even mergers and acquisitions. This as much as anything is a sign of lack of confidence and a general sense of risk aversion. As I have mentioned before this all seemed to change in January of this year when in that first month over $1billion of potential deals were announced. Since then it would seem that the levee has broken as the cash to carry out possible deals seems to have washed over the markets seeking new investment opportunities. So where is this money to go? Well we can see from some figures that a good proportion is going on updating kit and replacing long delayed equipment, Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable much of which will have gone past its normal and trusted market commentators on television, radio operational life expectancy. For others though the and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has prospect of buying up competitors is once again observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst becoming quite appealing and has got the juices of the at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique investment bankers started again. However, a subset understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the of these companies have some other tax issues where private investor overseas earnings would have a high tax penalty on them if they were to be repatriated to the USA, thus encouraging some other local investment. A classic example of this was of course Pfizer’s attempted bid for Astra Zeneca. Now according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) this potential cash pile could be over $1.3trillion and such financial firepower could be about to be turned on certain of our leading companies here. If you just run your finger down a list of UK (and come to that those continental) blue chips, then it is quite easy to answer the question “why not”? From retailers like Tesco, to BAE Systems whose target 26 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

History

Maldens and Coombe Great War Fallen

As you no doubt know the First World War began 100 years ago on 28th July 1914. This article written by Graeme Hodge is about three of the soldiers commemorated on our War Memorial who died in the conflict. Graeme is currently researching all the names of the Great War fallen on the War Memorial and would welcome readers to contact him with any information that they might have. ghodge@nescot.ac.uk William Thomas Prismall a native of New Malden was born in 1887. He was the eldest son of Thomas W. and Caroline Prismall. After receiving his education at Christ Church Boys’ School, Elm Road, William was employed as a grocer’s assistant at Messrs. Wood and Hill, Malden Road, subsequently becoming a temporary postman at the New Malden Post Office. He enlisted at Kingston-upon-Thames and entered the Army on November 6, 1916, joining the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment), before being posted to to Lowestoft, Suffolk for training. On Christmas Eve, 1916, William married Beatrice Maggs at Christ Church, New Malden. In the Summer of 1917, he proceeded to France arriving there on the 16th July where he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Queen’s. After less that three months at the Front Line, Private William Thomas aged 30, was brought in to the 37th Casualty Clearing Station very badly wounded. The Sister-in-charge, in a letter to his widow, wrote that her husband was in a very collapsed state, did not speak and passed away quietly on the 6th October 1917. Private Thomas is buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery close to the Belgian border, about 16 kilometres south-west of Ieper (Ypres), and rests besides 900 of his British and Commonwealth comrades.

Alfred Henry, the only other son of Mr. and Mrs. Prismall, of 56, Cleveland Road, also served his King and Country. Alfred was wounded on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme whilst with the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment. Happily he recovered and survived the War. Another old boy of Christ Church Boys’ School, Elm Road, to make the supreme sacrifice was Albert William King, son of Mr.George. and Mrs. Emma King of Coombe Warren Farm. Albert was born at Coombe in 1896 and was one of twelve siblings. After leaving school, he was employed like his father, as a gardener’s labourer. Albert’s joined the Army Service Corps at Grove Park on the 18th January, 1915 before proceeding to Hungerford for training. His Army Service Papers show that Albert although just 5ft 4 ½ inches in height and

weighing 133 lbs, his overall physical development was classed as ‘good’. His pre-war occupation was that of a motor vehicle driver and it was no surprise therfore, that he was posted to a Motor Transport section. Albert was sent to France on the 25th July 1915 travelling across the Channel on the ‘Duchess of Argyle’and disembarking at Rouen the following day. On the 15th August, he was assigned to the 317 Auxiliary Company Army Service Corps. He was to serve on the Western Front for over three years before before succumbing to shell wounds received during an German aircraft attack. A Major Bancroft, writing to deceased’s mother, stated that that on October 8th Albert was driving his lorry, containing a large convoy of troops, to a forward area, when they were attacked by enemy aircraft. Although taken to the 58th Casualty Clearing Station, her son was so badly wounded that he died the following day the 9th October 1918. “Your son was truly one of my best men, and I felt that I could always rely on him and trust him to do his duty, and in this he never failed once. We all feel his loss very much, as he was so popular with everyone ... He was buried at La Baraque, a small village about six miles north of St. Quentin.” Albert was 23 years of age. His grave can be found at Tincourt New British Cemetery in the Somme Region of France. Many of those listed on our war memorial are not natives of the district. One of these is William Bell McArthur. William the second son of Mr. John and Mrs. Jeannie McArthur was born in Renfrew, Scotland in 1893. The family moved to New Malden in the 1900s and made their home at ‘Danebury’, Montem Road. William received his early education at the Elm Road Schools, subsequently proceeding to Tiffin Boys’ School. William McArthur enlisted into the 1st/14th Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish) on the outbreak of war and proceeded to France on the 8th March 1915. He took part in a number of battles including that at Loos, where he was promoted in the field to a commission, being posted to the Royal Scots Fusiliers on 6th November 1915. According to the Surrey Comet although experiencing many very narrow escapes, Second Lieutenant McArthur came through all these early engagements unscathed. On one occasion when with the London Scottish a bullet struck his garter, which was wound several times round his leg, cutting each fold but leaving him unscathed. On another occasion a shot penetrated his pack. William Bell McArthur was awarded the Military Cross

for conspicuous gallantry on 27th March 1916 at the Battle of St. Eloi. He was presented with the ribbon by a Divisional Commander at a special parade. The Surrey Comet noted that “The honour earned by the gallant young officer is also an honour to New Malden, Lieutenant McArthur being the first from this particular district to receive such distinction”. William’s luck finally ran out whilst serving with the 1st Royal Scots at the Battle of Arras in the Spring of 1917. The 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers were in reserve, and had to endure heavy shelling in the assembly trenches. Their susbequent advances were held up by machine-gun fire and ultimately failed. According to the Battalion’s official history the casualties that day were mostly from artillery fire. Among the dead that Easter Monday April 9th was Second Lieutenant William B. McArthur. William is buried at Beaurains Road Cemetery on the southern outskirts of Arras. In addition to his name being one of 265 local men listed on the Maldens and Coombe war memorial he is also remembered on the memorials at Christ Church and the United Reformed Church, New Malden.

Gardening

Grow your own take-away by Pippa Greenwood

We all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little selfindulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden? No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go! Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry. Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches. And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost. Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which 48

adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a British-bred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-topink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time. Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your home-grown vegetable stir-fry. Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her “Winter thru Spring” vegetable collection, plants for September, regular advice emails from Pippa, and a range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

1 Place the onion, garlic, ginger, pepper and curry paste in a food processor or blender with 1tbsp water and process until finely minced. 2 Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan, add the paste and fry over a medium heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring all the time until fragrant. 3 Add the cubed steak and cook, stirring, over a high heat for 2-3 minutes until the meat is no longer pink. Pour in the coconut milk and 100ml water and bring to the boil. 4 Add the sweet potato and reduce the heat to a very gentle simmer. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the beans and cook for a further 5-10 minutes until the beef and sweet potato are tender. 5 Stir in the chopped coriander and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. for the next five years. I can’t wait till the neighbours find out we’re having a bash at growing chestnut mushrooms as well! Now that summer is edging towards autumn and I’m eagerly anticipating the harvest to come, I can see the benefits of planning out the gardening year properly. I generally follow the rules, but my earnest efforts to start off early swiss chard Galaxy, bartered climbing beans and Oregon mange tout, in mid April, all met with disaster. Once I’d learned my lesson and waited until the soil had warmed up sufficiently, the replanting - overseen by Anne and the cat - led to something of a bumper crop. We’re also enjoying our first baby beetroot this year. And there was me thinking a Solo F1 was a birthday trip around Brands Hatch. Speaking of planning ahead, we’ve added a rainwater diverter, aka an old piece of drainpipe, to the downpipe on the back roof, helping to fill the subterranean tank. I think the tiny flowerpot on the end is a nice touch and it’ll doubtless prove a nice talking point for neighbours and walkers in the village. That is, until they find out about the bags of manure being delivered. A Malden Man Malden Fortnight by Raj Randhawa

So, Malden Fortnight is at an end. It was another great year for the annual event which seems to get bigger and better every year. This year, my wife and I managed to keep the fortnight relatively free to make sure we were around to enjoy it. Our family Saturdays are usually quite busy, so we had to fit the local events in around dropping and picking the children up from their various activities. On the first Saturday (5th July), as we sat down to have breakfast, it was raining but as soon as it stopped, we kicked off our Malden Fortnight at the Farmer’s Market in The Fountain pub car park. After breakfast I walked the kids up there for a look around, before we went off to their tennis lessons. The farmer’s market was great fun and the

children really enjoyed it, especially when they saw the ’The Real Butchers’ stall. We swear by their home made sausage rolls- easily the best we’ve tasted. The stall holders were all very friendly and the kids had great fun trying out new foods. We started off with some Indian pakora snacks which, after a bite, the kids seemed worryingly indifferent about. We also tried some caraway-seed flavoured sausages (which were divine) and vanilla smoked bacon which my daughter absolutely loved- she’s a total bacon fiend (believe it or not, at the age of 7 she’ll take a few rashers of bacon over chocolate cake or ice cream, any day of the week)! We also tried some beetroot smoked salmon which was pretty interesting. We then had a VID (Very Important Decision) to make- whether to buy a slice of chocolate cake or a chocolate brownie and after some serious soul-searching, they went for the brownie. Back in the car, they set about obliviously littering brownie crumbs all over the back seat. Later, after dropping my son at his stagecoach class, my daughter and I rushed back to the

High St to watch the parade. We drove around and parked near the Fountain roundabout and found ourselves in a prime spot to watch the parade walk up, around the traffic-free roundabout and back down the High St again. My daughter loved seeing all of the floats and

and ate a delicious lunch of Korean bulgogi and spicy chicken with rice. It was a really wonderful afternoon of Pimm-sipping and hanging out with friends. The following Saturday, the kids were really excited about the Craft Fair stalls that lined the High St. Thankfully the rainy morning gave way to glorious sunshine and we had a great time meandering up and down the High St. Later in the day we bought the kids ice creams and sat at St George’s Square to watch the various entertainment on show. I bought myself some sushi from the Korean opposite and grabbed a beer from Bar Malden while lapping up the sun. The children particularly loved watching the Zumba dancing and we were amazed the dancers managed to keep up the pace, in the unforgiving midday sun. Over the fortnight, we didn’t get to see as much as we would have liked, but all in all we had a great time of it. For me, one of the nicest things about the Malden Fortnight is spending time as a family, enjoying our local area and bumping in to friends. I really want my children to have fond memories of where they’re growing up and Malden Fortnight certainly puts a smile on their faces. Roll on next year!

we recognised a few people as they passed by. We had a little jig along to one of the party floats, while they played ’Feelin Hot Hot Hot Hot’- a song I regularly sing to my bewildered children during bath time! We wanted to fit in as much as we could of that first day, so later in the afternoon the whole family went for cream tea at the United Reformed Church. We met some lovely people there before we moved on to the ’pop-up’ cafe at the Scout Hut, where we watched the wonderful Kingston & Malden Scout & Guide band play. We also bumped in to some friends, while the kids enjoyed jumping around on a bouncy obstacle course. This year I decided to invite my brother and his family over for the Funday Sunday at Beverley Park. The weather was perfect and after laying down our picnic blankets we watched the races To advertise email jenny@nmvv.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

Teen Malden Not going abroad?

by Diaz Gillard-Brockhouse As it moves into summer at my school, everyone begins to talk about which destination they’re getting off to on their summer holiday. However, for the last three years, I’ve listened with longing to their tales, as I haven’t been abroad since 2010. The main reason for this is the price – a holiday for my family of 4 is simply too expensive! This year, though, we are heading abroad for two weeks, but in the years previously that I’ve stayed at home, I’ve found plenty to do in New Malden and Kingston. Even if you stay at home, you can still get an amazing tan in the summer months. Because of the amazing parks and open spaces in New Malden, as mentioned in my last article, it is easy to soak up the sun whilst maybe enjoying a picnic, and most importantly, getting away from your own house. I think staying in reminds you of how you’re not going on holiday, so days in the parks are a favourite of mine when it comes to not going abroad. There is certainly no shortage of cafes along New Malden High Street, so another thing I like to do in the summer, when it’s quite quiet as a lot of people are abroad, is to go to a cafe you’ve never visited before and perhaps sit outside in the sun, enjoying your drink with family and friends. Although you’re still in your hometown, I find it relaxing and enjoyable to sit and chat in the summer. Maybe you can even imagine you’re on the Spanish or French coast! Moving into Kingston, what better time than summer to take advantage of the river? With its grassy banks, selection of restaurants and lovely atmosphere, the river is a great place to spend the summer days, getting a tan and relaxing. If you don’t like to noise of the Portsmouth road you can cross the bridge and sit on the banks on the opposite side where it’s very quiet, and if you’re feeling energetic, that 60

path leads all the way down to Hampton Court, which makes a really good summer day trip. Luckily, all these activities are not at all strenuous, don’t cost any money (unlike a holiday abroad) and give you a great summer tan without even having to get on a plane. Spending a bit more money, places like theme parks, swimming pools and cinemas – for the rainier, typically-english summer days – are really great, because they can often be a bit quieter when people are abroad, as well as being great fun. Of course I’m looking forward to my holiday, but after staying home in the summer for all this time, I’ll have to say I’ll miss the quiet streets and relaxed vibe New Malden gets when everyone is away! So, if you’re not going abroad this summer, take advantage of the lovely weather and see what New Malden and Kingston have to offer!
