Welcome to Your Village Voice So the December madness is about to begin. I bought my first presents yesterday but am sure, despite best intentions, everything apart from putting trees up (decided a few years ago that I might as well do that at the beginning of the month and be in it for the long run!) will inevitably be last minute and rushed. Maybe this is the year to take a step back and try not to ‘do it all’. Wish me luck with that one and let’s all try to spread a little happiness somewhere unexpected this year. Remember that the Village Voice is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event in 2016 and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. Did you know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of the KT3 postcode, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, New Malden library, Tudor Willams and the Malden Centre but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes

Jenny

New Malden History My Patch

by Robin Gill Ask people what they know about Motspur Park, and if they don’t say Where? , they might say “Do you mean Motspur Park Road?” Hopefully, after reading this article, you may find yourself better acquainted with the history of the area that makes up my patch.

Next year, our family will have lived in the same house for fifty years, and whilst it is very much like a lot of the other houses in the road, and has always been known by a number, never a name, it is still home. The first occupier of the property who bought the house when new was Frederick George Wells, who was 38 when he and his wife Rose (16 years his senior) moved in. I understand that Frederick was responsible for building the terrace and rockery in the back garden, and for putting the panelling up in the hall. His job was testing gas meters for the London County Council. The Wells stayed in the house until Christmas Eve 1948 when Rose died aged 66, and Frederick moved out early the year. then, there have been only two Westbury House following Ad 16/6/12 13:35 PageSince 1 other families owning the house until we moved in in 1966. :Westbury House Ad 16/6/12 13:35 Page 1

First reference Motspur Park is first named as a district in 1874 when property built by Charles Blake was sold. The farm called Motspur, whose land covered most of the area, is first mentioned in 1844 when crops and farm implements belonging to the farm were sold at auction prior to the farm itself being sold. The farm itself appears on maps under various names: Furse Farm (1623), Motes Firs Farm (1627), Moots Farm (1768), and finally Motts Spur Farm (1823). Another farm in the area was Blue House Farm. The building itself stood roughly where the road Barnes End stands now, although the farmlands covered 150 acres, and employed nine hands. Originally operated by James Mitchell before he moved to Hoppingwood Farm, the farm was divided when the railway to Epsom was built in 1859. Charles Blake must have been aware of the coming line, because when he was acting in his capacity as solicitor during the sale of the farm in 1854, he took it upon himself to purchase the building, and moved in the following year. Farmland covered most of the area with the only recognised road being the route to Malden which was then called Appletree Lane, passing along the top of

the track running to the farm (Motspur). As was said, development started with the railway line from Wimbledon to Epsom which opened on 4th March 1859, although the stretch between Raynes Park and Worcester Park (then called Malden) was not completed until a little later, and for a short while horses had to be used to pulled the carriages (and passengers) up the embankment. Henry Webb was employed as “railway gate man” and lived in a small cottage close to the line. He must have enjoyed his job as he was still doing it twenty years later aged over 60.He died in 1887, probably still working.

died aged 85, fifteen months later he married Elizabeth Rosalie Gush aged 46 from The Grange, the marriage took place at the Hollington Church In The Wood near Hastings (which is where Hollington Crescent gets its name from). In 1887 he moved out of Blue House Farm into The Laurels (Now Fulham FC training ground) with his wife, and her father, who had suffered some sort of debilitating illness, and had to be cared for.

Elizabeth Rosalie Blake Around the same time, Henry Davey a well known civil engineer and inventor and his (nee Gush) wife moved into Chatsworth (later Voewood) and it was here that their son (Henry) Norman was born in 1888. This put an end to Portland Avenue, Chilmark Gardens, Bargate Close, proper farming with the land being put to building and Ancaster Crescent. As you can tell by the names all and recreational use. Blake immediately built a road leading from West Barnes Lane over a newly built bridge across Beverley Brook to the farmhouse (Motspur), and continued it unfenced to a lodge in Appletree Lane. There were new owners at The Grange; William Gush a portrait painter, his wife, and daughter Elizabeth Rosalie (pictured). The daughter certainly caught the eye of her neighbour the self styled Squire Blake, whose wife now in her eighties, Local, Friendly & Professional removal services Local, Friendly & Professional was twenty years older than him.

Housing estate By the end of the 1870s the district had become peppered with large houses built by Blake; Chatsworth, The Laurels, Broadlands, and Kenilworth off the road leading to the farm. Whilst on the Malden Road there were Woodfield, Oakfield, Coombefield, Radnor House, Wilton House, The Firs, and Elmhurst. The family living at Broadlands was the Derry family; Charles Derry had founded the firm of Derry and Toms with his brother in law Joseph Toms as a “house of distinction” in Kensington High Street in 1862. The Derry family were also instrumental in the foundation of the Congregational (now URC) Church in New Malden.

the roads are called after types of stone (except Hollington). A polo field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide, roughly the equivalent of three football pitches. Famous people who played polo at Motspur Park included the Prince Of Wales (Edward VIII), and Winston Churchill. The club played twice a week (April-September) until the First World War, and then restarted in the 1920s.Parts of the ground were also used by the famous Hurlingham Club for their matches. It all came to an end in 1933 when the 39 acres were sold for building development by Knight Frank and Rutley. Working past retirement By the time of the 1911 census Samuel Guppy IV was living in Broadlands, supposedly related to the man the fish was named after. But our interest is not in him, but rather his wife Septima who he had married in 1897. They did not get on, and she was described as domineering and possessive. In the end Samuel moved to America leaving his wife in a large house with 15 rooms and several acres of gardens and lawns. She was fortunate to employ eight servants to do the majority of the work. However, when the National Insurance Act came into law in 1912, Septima refused to pay 3d (1½ pence) a week for each employee, and refused to keep records. Rather than go to prison for breaking the law, she decided to sack all her staff, and look after the house and grounds herself. She became a national figure for her stance, and received many letters of support, but also a few threats so she had to have police protection. Needless to say, the work proved too much for her, and she needed staff. But still she managed to get around the Act by employing a girl under 15 to help with the housework, a young boy as a groom, and a gardener and coachman over 70 years old.

completed the following year for £18,000, and the sports ground was opened in May 1931. Meanwhile in 1924, close to the railway line the Wandsworth Wimbledon & Epsom District Gas Company had purchased land from the Weeding family (lords of the Manor of Malden) on which to build their gas station. The gasholders were constructed in 1930, and still stand today, but have not been in use for many years. The railway line itself was electrified in 1925 the same year as the station (Motspur Park) was opened. In those days a three month first class season ticket to London cost 5 guineas (£5.25pence). The road (Motspur Park) was originally a Private Road barred by a huge white gate to stop cars, with a smaller wicker gate at the side. Known locally as a lover’s lane, it was a gravel covered road lined with trees and bushes and well known for the watercress that used to flourish in the fields nearby. The deeds to our property clearly state that we were not allowed to build any stables, and that polo was the only game that was allowed in the vicinity. The houses, including ours were built between 1934 and 1936. Congratulations on your 10th anniversary – a magnificant achievement! Malden’t Village Voice is essential reading every month. We are fortunate to have Robin Gill as a contributer – his articles are meticulously researched and of great interest. John Nicholson

Christmas Tree Festival

Sheep Trail

Sheep lost in New Malden. Can ewe help find them?

Around 40 sheep have gone astray in the High Street and we need young detectives to seek them out and record their whereabouts. The (knitted) sheep come in a variety of styles and sizes ( they are ewe-nique) but all are believed to be hiding in premises in and around the High Street. They might be in the window or you may have to search further. Each sheep has a name tag around its neck so you have to enter their names on the entry form. Please collect an entry form from the Methodist Church (next to Tudor Williams) from Friday 27th November at the church Christmas fair and after that on any weekday between 10am and 2pm and start noting down names of sheep. The sheep will return to the fold for the Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 5pm. Please return your finished form to the church at that service or on Saturday 19th December 10am-5pm during our Christmas Tree Festival. All completed forms will receive a small prize. Thank ewe for helping find our sheep!

When times are tough you have to shout about your business

EVEN LOUDER Be seen and heard by the your local market in the Village Voice and Worcester Park Life. With competitive pricing, friendly efficient service and helpful advice it’s simple and effective - but then the best ideas always are.

The ever popular Christmas Tree Festival returns to New Malden Methodist Church starting on Saturday 12th December. Around 24 local organisations will be showing their artistic flair by decorating trees for their favourite charities. Last year saw entries from a host of local organisations including Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Tudor Williams, Rotary, Inner Wheel, Princess Alice Hospice, Groves Residential and various church groups. In excess of one thousand pounds was made for the charities so it would be great to top that this year. Entry is free so you can save your money to put in the box of your favourite tree, or there is a general collection box if you can’t decide. Please come and see this festive forest in both daylight and in the dark (on the two Saturday afternoons) when the twinkling lights create a magical display. Opening Times: Saturday 12th December 10.00am – 5.00pm All weekdays from 14th December until Christmas Day 10.00am – 2.00pm, when the coffee shop is open Saturday 19th December 10.00am – 5.00pm (including Community Carols at 12.00) New Malden Methodist Church is right on the High Street and the coffee bar in the church is open 10.00am until 12pm on Saturdays (until 5.00pm on 12th and 19th December) and 10.00am-2.00pm on weekdays so why not have a break from Christmas shopping, stop for a coffee and a biscuit and take a look at the trees? Happy Birthday to the Village Voice. Always full of topical and interesting local information, keep up the good work for the next decade!! New Malden Methodist Church

New Malden Matters New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents’ Association

The Village Voice has over its ten years of publication given us a wealth of material on historical changes, yet we don’t always know how these changes were viewed at the time. We are told that vested interests in Kingston refused to let the main rail line run through it in order not to damage the carriage trade, and we know that in adjacent areas of Surrey in the 1930’s people were horrified by the march of suburban housing over farmland; housing which most of us now take for granted. I would be fascinated to know how New Malden residents viewed the twin towers by the station when they were built; were they admired as symbols of 1960’s modernism? Was the wind tunnel they create, which limits the use of St George’s Square, not predicted?

At the State of the Borough debate, several speakers in the audience were dubious about this growth. The debate focussed on the town centre and Surbiton, and councillors needed reminding about New Malden by a genteel heckle from the audience. On the transport front, TfL is currently consulting on Crossrail 2, which is planned to stop at New Malden and should give us better connections both in to central London but also across to Surbiton. Less welcome is the prospect of a flight path over New Malden High Street, if the third runway at Heathrow, opposed by all five mayoral candidates, goes ahead. What will that do to our already poor air quality? What would be helpful is to know is, what is the council’s vision for New Malden? Is this planned change, not just an incremental creep? For example, how is traffic management being modelled? How is our current air quality being monitored, and what are the plans to improve it? Clear answers to such questions will help us address the change that we know is coming. Liz Meerabeau New Malden Residents’ Association www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk newmaldenresidents@gmail.com

The State of the Borough debate in September this year made it clear that more change is in store for Kingston; we are designated as a Strategic Outer London Development Centre. Between 2011 and 2050, the population of London is predicted to grow by 37%, to over 11m (range 9.5 to 13.4m). Kingston is predicted to grow by 34%, to over 215,000 people- a much higher increase than Merton, Sutton or Richmond. In London as a whole, the growth in people over 65 is predicted to be 102%, raising a set of challenges about how we pay for our care in later life which have been ducked by each government for about thirty years. The growth in the ‘working age’ population is predicted to be 31%, and since that includes people of childbearing age, the population is likely to grow still further. So where is everyone to live? Kingston’s dwellings are predicted to increase from about 65,000 to over 91,000, and we know that there is huge housing need in our borough.

A photographer dreams December -

by Hugh Griffiths Last December I took the opportunity of a free day to go to Polesden Lacy. It was cold – and there had been quite a heavy frost the night before – but the sky was clear and there were quite a few people enjoying this lovely National Trust property. The sun was gradually melting the frost but even at midday, when this picture was taken, there were large areas which still had that white surface of frozen dew. Wandering past the house down the slope to the low wall at the end, then turning left to walk along the promenade above the little valley, I saw that the sun was casting some great shadows on the floor of that valley. The trees that were still in shade had kept their layer of frost … I really like the architectural look of trees that have lost their leaves, and this frost accentuates that look to me. The split between the shade and the sunlight made a nice composition for the picture and the diagonal line from left to right makes it more interesting; I don’t think that a horizontal line would have been anything like as good. I took a lot of photos here. Of individual trees, of the frosty area on

its own, of small groups of trees (always trying to get an odd number in the picture) but it was this one that really brought it all together. The feel of winter is there, but the sunny area gives a feeling of life and hope. The clump of trees in the sunlight, and the individual trees there, are important, giving a focal point for the eye to stay on. And then I walked into the wooded area past the fields (looking forward to seeing the lambs there in spring!). One of my hopes is to get nice pictures of groups of trees – but these usually fail because they don’t show the marching effect of these trees. A lot of well-known

the trees stand out from each other: this isn’t a single tangled mess but a collection of individual living trees. That needed emphasis. Next month, winter is really coming – will there be snow and ice? Will the robin in my garden look for protection on the bird table? I don’t know – but I can hope! Come along to the Malden Camera Club – www.maldencameraclub.org.uk - and get the chance to talk through your pictures and be challenged to make them better. landscape photographers have published shots like this – Joe Cornish, Charlie Waite and many others. Often with silver birch giving colour and life to the photos. This shot works for me, because of the tree in the foreground anchoring the scene and the others receding into the distance giving a 3 dimensional effect. But converting it to black and white made a huge difference. There wasn’t much colour there anyway, and it distracted from what I wanted to show – which was a strong pattern of verticals in almost a random sequence around the picture. Black and white can really help with this sort of scene, this sort of objective, and I can certainly see this one on the wall somewhere! One of the effects I used was to increase the contrast in the picture (for Photoshop experts, I upped the clarity slider) making

Clubs

New Malden Velo New Malden Velo was founded in 2014 to give cyclists of varying ages and ability-levels the opportunity to enjoy social and leisure cycling activities within a safe, group environment. As well as having fun, our ambition is to improve road–safety awareness through increasing the amount of cyclists within the local area. We all cycled as children, so let’s keep people on 2 wheels, improving relationships and safety on the road. Affiliated to British Cycling, we have nearly 50 active members, regularly taking part in weekend rides such as through the Surrey Hills, to Brighton, or to Windsor. We run family rides (including “after dark around Richmond Park” - especially enjoyed by children), and participate in sportives, representing the local community. We’ve already arranged two trips to the French Alps, taking part in La Grand Bo race near Annecy last year, and this year climbing mountains made famous in the Tour de France including Alpe d’Huez, Col du Glandon, Col de la Croix de Fer, and Lacets de Montvernier. We are visiting the Italian Alps in 2016 for more spectacular cycling. Our ethos is that “no one gets left behind” and we aspire to providing opportunities for all levels of cyclists, regardless of age or gender. Our ambition is to provide enjoyable rides by enabling similar ability riders to ride together. We need members to achieve our aspirations though, so please join us! We plan to set up training and coaching sessions to improve cycling skills and technical know-how. Again, we need increased members to be able to provide this. The origins of the club date back to 2009, when a group of local neighbours and Corpus Christi School Dads took part in the BHF London to Brighton ride. Subsequent Capital 2 Coast rides, London to Windsor, and Ride London events were entered, and as a group we are proud to have raised over £10k for various charities. Word of mouth lead to Corpus Christi Dad membership growing, as more and more of us realised that we were going on similar Sunday 28

journeys, but individually – and it’s more fun and safer to cycle together. Ride numbers snow-balled and we started to discuss making the group more “official”. We also realised that it was important that we became more inclusive, creating the Richmond Park fun rides and recruiting female members as a result. We started to meet at Woodies, Thetford Road, drafting a constitution and club rules, and most importantly creating a kit. None of us are quite sure how we voted for our orange shirts, but we’ve grown to love them. We are passionate about our club and cycling, and are proud of our all-inclusiveness, something that sets us apart from other cycling clubs. However to make the club a success, we need to have enough riders of varying abilities to provide suitable rides for all. As a result we’d be delighted if you could join us. More details at www.facebook.com/newmaldenvelo or www.newmaldenvelo.com. Contact nmvelo@gmail.com Happy 10th Birthday, Village Voice! Well done Jenny for doing such a fantastic job! My family and I are looking forward to receiving the magazine every month and reading about what’s going on in the local area. As a local yoga teacher I’ve found advertising in the publication invaluable! Best wishes from Christine at Yogaberry The Richard Challoner School community wishes the Village Voice editorial team all the best for the next 10 years! We have regularly advertised in the Village Voice and have been very pleased with the response and awareness that the magazine has generated for us. We feel the magazine is fairly unique and a useful tool for local businesses, educational organisations and community groups.

Some More Radical Common Sense for Tax or am I just “three stops short of Dagenham?” (Or…Barking on the District Line) The argument over Tax Credits is very sensitive at various levels. Certainly most would agree that its reforms are going to be financially very painful for those at the poorer end of society, but it also impacts on those further up the financial scale and for those with greater responsibilities such as young children. Often it can be the Tax Credit that tips the decision as to whether a partner can afford to go out to work or not - it’s not about being seen as a shirker. It is also sensitive in that it has been used on occasion as an excuse to depress potential wages. Sadly I have come across examples where prospective employees have been offered a lower package on the basis that it would be topped up by the individual applying for their Tax Credit, thus almost encouraging the more unscrupulous employers to take unfair advantage of the system and keep low wages even lower. Then again it is sensitive on another level because of the size of the Tax Credit bill which Mr Osborne tells us is now over £4.5bn per annum. Frankly I have always seen it as a typically complicated tax concept from Gordon Brown, which may have originally been born out of good intentions but was hideously cumbersome in its operation. When introduced it was regarded as a complicated system designed by someone who was no doubt very clever but had obviously no understanding of the bureaucracy involved (Gordon Brown). He thought that it was just a good way of getting around a problem - giving the financial support to those wanting to get back to work. Unfortunately from the start of its operation it was a mess. First you pay tax and then you claim it back as a tax credit - sounds simple but why bother - why not just pay less tax! So what started out as an incentive has grown “like topsy” to now become a financial dependence as difficult to shake off as any drug addiction. Most would now agree that it has to be reformed as it is only going to get worse and so become even more difficult and painful to shake off. Thus we should look for more imaginative ways of adjusting to minimise the pain, whilst still being able to benefit from the gain of its final reform and even potentially its removal. Now in the Autumn Statement

30

due next week (another Budget in all but name) The Chancellor will no doubt be producing a ‘rabbit out of hat’ solution to this problem, but he will definitely not wish to be seen to be climbing down for reasons of policy, pride and politics. So how about another idea: Why not ask those further up the financial scale to pay a limited sum each for a given period of say five years, which then would then be able to be reclaimed back plus a coupon (dividend) value over the following five years. If we had one million UK taxpayers paying an extra £1,000 each year, that would be £1 billion pounds each year and obviously £5 billion over five years which would then be offset by those payers with their coupon value against their own tax liabilities for the next five years. The effect would be to smooth the painful period of adjustment for those at the weakest point, and allow the government to show that it was taking from those with the broadest shoulders, not the weakest, and looking to lessen the pressure during that time - and then fairly reward the ‘broad shouldered’ for doing so thereafter. Just a thought - radical common sense? I hope so. A Very Sensitive Find Despite the slump in the price of oil, it can be good news if a country with scarce natural resources makes a positive find. So this must be good news for Israel which, for all sorts of political reasons we all know, finds it quite difficult to enjoy a sustainable source of oil from its neighbours. However, on this occasion, the site of this find is in the occupied territories, and not just the West Bank, but in the occupied Syrian territory of the Golan Heights. Apparently the potential size of the find could be enough to make Israel self-sufficient in its oil requirements for the first time since its inception. The nation currently consumes 270,000 barrels per day. This a valuable addition of energy supplies for Israel after the offshore gas fields’ reserves were located in the Tamar and Leviathan fields off Gaza and Israel back in 2009. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor Many congratulations for a decade in print and thank you for all your help with our local marketing and helping to promote local businesses Dream Doors

News “Residents of The Maldens and Coombe should keep their eyes open for the above symbol which will be appearing in local shops over the next few weeks. These are retailers who have given excellent service to their customers over several years, above and beyond what is normally expected. There are about fifteen nominations, and the winner will be decided at the Maldens and Coombe Heritage meeting held on 2nd December. The shops are located in many different areas, not just in the High Street, and have been nominated by our membership. The design shows a skep (form of beehive) and commemorates that it will be 150 years next year since that emblem was first used by the New Malden Local Government Board (forerunner of the council) to symbolize the industry of the area, and the logo of the Board.”

We (Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society) have just published a new book entitled “We Knew you were coming” which commemorates the heroic actions (and the ultimate sacrifice) of three Victoria Cross recipients of The Borough of Maldens and Coombe. It is approximately 76 pages and is priced £5.00 The book will be officially launched at the Farmers’ Market on 7th November (just ahead of Remembrance Sunday). People can, however, order in advance via our website maldensandcoombeheritagesociety.weebly.com/ (and then going to the Latest News page). Our previous book of residents’ recollections of New Malden throughout the years, entitled “ Monday was always Washday” is also still available, priced at £4.00 and, once again is available at the Farmers’ Market and on the website. Finally we have a selection of Christmas Cards depicting old views of New and Old Malden and these too will be available at the Market and on the website. English Conversation Group based at Christ Church Centre, New Malden We facilitate an English Conversation on Monday mornings between 10.00 and 12.00 and our friend Dick Waller on Tuesday mornings at the same time at Christ Church Centre, New Malden during termtime. The aim of these classes is to encourage English Conversation and also to help with life skills such as

32

discussing and sometimes getting professionals to facilitate on subjects such as communicating with GP Practices, schools, Fire Brigade, Safer Neighbourhood Team (The Police) and IT advice. We are a truly multiracial group which includes males and females and are open to any one who feels they would benefit from this intermediate group. We sometimes have extra social events which hopefully ensure that friendships are made which goes some way to combating loneliness in this country when English is not their first language. Any one who is interested in joining is more than welcome either to turn up or email chris.coke@ hotmail.co.uk or ring Chris & Elspeth on 0208-942-7388. Learn English at Home We receive referrals from Learn English at Home, who from time to time run training courses for tutors who would then go into people’s homes to teach English whose English is not their first language. This is an invaluable service particularly in this Borough which is increasingly becoming multi-racial. Any one interested in learning more about becoming a tutor is encouraged to contact Zoe Hourigan on health@leah. org.uk or telephone 0208-255-6144 or Louise Gibson on headofprogrammes@leah.org.uk Elspeth & Chris Coke

WARNING:

THIS COULD COST YOU £1,000’s AND PUT YOUR FAMILY’S HEALTH AT RISK! Cleaning your Gutters is probably nagging at the back of your mind. It’s a job that needs doing yearly, but it’s not high on your to do list, especially with Christmas coming up. Consequences The problem is doing nothing could result in your Gutters becoming clogged or broken. Damp cause’s Structural Damage (which can cost you £1,000’s in repairs) and can cause health issues for you and your family which include: Respiratory Symptoms, Respiratory Infections, Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma. The Professional Choice To put your mind at rest and to save you time why not let the professionals do all the hard work for you? I have been cleaning Gutters for years; and have developed a complete 4 Step Cleaning Process to get the job done thoroughly, as outlined below: 1 All of your Gutters will be sucked clear of all Leaves, Moss, Branches, Silt and Stagnant Water using an Industrial Strength Gutter Cleaning Machine. NOTHING WILL BE LEFT BEHIND! 2 All of your Downpipes will be flushed to remove any blockages. 3 We will assess whether any of your Guttering needs repairing. 4 Finally we will clean the exterior of your Gutters so that they look nice from the ground and will impress your neighbours and visitors to your home.

Clubs Bridge – a game for life even if it’s not a sport! Bridge is a wonderful card game played by millions around the world – some names you may recognise include James Bond, Martina Navratilova, Radiohead, Warren Buffet, the late Omar Sharif and Bill Gates even Snoopy the Dog! The card game is fun, challenging, very social and incredibly addictive! It is easy to learn, perhaps a little trickier to master and endlessly fascinating. All you need to play this great game are a table, a deck of cards and four people - two partnerships of two, one playing as North-South and the other as East-West. Many people play in a club and/or at home but you’ll find bridge players in lots of places – allotment clubs, church halls, U3a, pubs, workplaces at lunchtime, tennis clubs, golf clubs and more... Bridge is for anyone and everyone from 9 – 100 and with so many reasons to learn to play it is not an exaggeration to say it’s a life skill! You can take it up at any age and while life sometimes gets in the way, e.g. career, family, most players return enthusiastically. Lessons at a club are a great way to start. You can learn with a friend or partner but most people start on their own. Classes usually include practice and before long you can play socially at home with friends or in a practice session at the club. Bridge is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest mind sports. Unfortunately, it is not recognised as a sport by Sport England. Many players would argue that playing Bridge competitively is as or more exhausting than many sports. Wimbledon Bridge Club is one of England’s busiest and most popular bridge clubs. We have lessons and sessions with times to suit everyone, from beginner to expert, social and competitive. With excellent transport links and free parking in the evenings, our membership extends into London, New Malden, Kingston, Worcester Park, Sutton and out into Surrey via the A3. On Sunday 8th we hosted our annual charity pairs competition – a great day out doing what we like doing most – playing bridge with a break for a scrumptious afternoon tea and a raffle. In true club tradition, members provided and sold home produce in the weeks leading up to our event. This year we raised money for two worthy causes - St Raphael’s Hospice and South Thames Crossroads. See our website www.wimbledonbridgeclub.co.uk or separate advert for more information and contact details.

Cake and Bake

Stollen This spiced and fruity Continental sweet bread is perfect for serving over the festive season with a glass of warm mulled wine.

Ingredients: • 50g butter • 175ml milk • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 375g strong plain white flour, plus extra for kneading • tsp salt • 1 tsp ground mixed spice • 2 tsp fast-action dried yeast • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 large egg, beaten • 125g raisins • 25g chopped mixed peel • 50g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and quartered • 175g marzipan • Melted butter, for brushing • Icing sugar, for dusting

Makes 10-12 slices Ready in about 3 hours 50

1. Put the butter, milk and caster sugar in a small pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Leave to cool for 10 minutes. 2. Sift the flour, salt and mixed spice into a large bowl and stir in the dried yeast. Make a well in the centre and stir in the milk mixture, lemon zest and egg. Mix together with a round-bladed knife to form a soft and sticky dough. 3. Turn the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. At first the dough will be quite sticky so add more flour as necessary. 4. Flatten out the dough and knead in the raisins, cherries and peel until just combined. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for about 1 hours, or until doubled in size. 5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes, then roll out to a 25cm square. Shape the marzipan into a sausage shape and place down the centre of the dough. Fold one side over to cover the marzipan then repeat with the other side, overlapping in the centre. Seal the ends. Place seam-side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5. 6. Bake the stollen for 35-45 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Brush the hot stollen all over with melted butter and roll in the icing sugar to coat. Leave to cool.

Gardening Growing Fruit Trees Pippa Greenwood

For the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sunwarmed - so grow your own and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees… You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires. You could also train fruits like apples to make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm above ground level (called ‘step-overs’). A step-over apple grows to a height of about 30cm and is trained to forms two horizontal ‘arms’, which will bear a smallish crop of fruit. Try step-overs around the edge of your vegetable plot or flower bed. To make a real feature of fruit, use a tree to create a decorative and productive arch. Buy an inexpensive bare root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look pretty when in blossom in spring and will bear tasty fruit too. Provided you get the right rootstock (see below), you can grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be big - a half-barrel at least - and have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom. Good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 25-50% multipurpose loam-free compost. It is essential to choose fruit trees on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing M27 - though weak varieties may fail in poor soil or if not well pampered. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the dwarfing rootstock M26, while for a cordon, an espalier on poor soil, arches and bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You can buy one year old ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ which are small, fairly straight stems and train them yourself or you can buy trained or part-trained trees. Make sure you choose varieties that flower at the same time so that they pollinate each other and thus provide

52

fruit. Ask your supplier which ‘pollination group’ each variety is in. At this time of year you can buy inexpensive fruit trees sold ‘bare-root’, which means lifted from a field and not container grown; they also establish well. Bare-root fruit trees are generally available from about November until early March - so don’t delay, get ordering or planting today! Perfect as a Christmas gift, make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood.com and your gardenready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of advice and tips. Gift cards are available too for this perfect present! It is great value and various pack sizes are available.

Golden Years Memories of 50 years ago by Ted Bruning On 22nd December 1965 Transport Minister Tom Fraser gave us a Christmas present we still use every day – the 70mph speed limit. And not before time, either, because out there on Britain’s roads it was absolute carnage. Back then, there was only one speed limit: 30mph in built-up areas had been the legal ceiling since 1935. Anywhere else, you could go as fast as you liked – and despite the primitive suspension, steering and brakes of the day, and the complete lack of even the most basic safety features (such as seat-belts, for instance), people did. And died. You’d be astonished at the number of road deaths people used to take pretty much for granted. In 1926 when records began, 4,888 people were killed on Britain’s roads. At the time there was a 20mph speed limit, which was scrapped in 1930 as being unenforceable - and perhaps predictably things very quickly got worse. In 1934, with car ownership at only 2,500,000, there were 7,343 road deaths, half of them pedestrians. During the war, the black-out trumped petrol rationing and 1941 became the worst year on record with 9,196 road deaths. Afterwards, with rationing still in place until 1950 but the street-lights turned back on, the annual death toll fluctuated between 4,500 and 5,500. But from the late ‘50s on, with returning prosperity bringing rising car ownership, new technology producing faster cars, the closure of many branch-lines and factory sidings forcing freight off the rails and on to the roads, and the gradual spread of the motorway network, matters span out of control again. The total for 1964 was 7,820, the worst since 1934 (barring the blackout years, when more British civilians were killed in road accidents than by German bombs). A series of high-profile pile-ups on fogbound motorways in the autumn of 1965 persuaded the Government to act, and on 22nd December the 70mph national speedlimit was announced as a four-month trial. The results were positive enough to persuade Fraser’s successor Barbara Castle to give it another 15 months; in July 1967 it became permanent, and the only change since then has been the reduction of the national limit to 60mph except on motorways and dual carriageways, where it remains 70mph, and on roads with designated lower limits of their own.

It would be nice to record that the introduction of the 70mph limit (and the breathalyser that followed in 1967) had a dramatic effect on road safety. No such luck. The grim toll was stubbornly slow to fall and it wasn’t until the 1990s, after the Government adopted more sophisticated and closely-targeted road safety campaigns, that it fell below 3,000 and stayed there. But since 2007, when the number of road deaths fell below 3,000 for the first time ever, there has been a miracle. The figure for 2013 was 1,713 deaths: a record low. There are many reasons for this, not all of them positive: safer cars and better engineered roads, fine; but also far more single-occupancy journeys (hence fewer casualties per crash), punitive insurance premiums that price many younger drivers off the road, and far fewer unaccompanied child pedestrians. How great a part speed limits have played is something to argue about, but the fact remains that for whatever reason Britain is second only to Sweden in the international road safety rankings.

Happy 50th birthdays to Katarina Witt (3rd), Ed Davey (25th), Heidi Fleiss (30th), and Will Carling (31st). Cake and botox to you all!

1 Place the gammon joint in a large deep pan with the onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns. Pour over enough cold water to cover the joint. 2 Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for 1½ hours, topping up the water level as needed. 3 Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Lift out the gammon from the pan and place in a foil-lined roasting tin (discard the cooking liquid). Leave to cool for 10 minutes. Cut away the skin from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat and score the fat into diamonds. Stud the scored fat with the cloves in an even pattern. 4 Mix together the marmalade, honey, mustard and sugar and spoon all over the gammon fat. Roast in the oven for 40-45 minutes, basting regularly with the glaze and pan juices until the fat is golden. Serve hot or cold garnished with fresh bay leaves and orange wedges. TIP Add 1 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander or a splash of Tabasco sauce to the glaze for a bit of extra spice, if liked. Around Britain Local Food & Specialities 1. Arbroath, Angus - An Arbroath smokie is a smoked salted haddock. Although probably descended from similar Scandinavian recipes, local folklore claims the dish was first conceived of after a fire in the town in which a barrel of salted haddock was accidentally ‘cooked’. 2. Bedfordshire - A ‘clanger’ is a stuffed suet dumpling, usually elongated in shape. Although different variations of the dish exist all across England, the ‘Bedfordshire clanger’ is perhaps the most remarkable as it traditionally contains two fillings, one savoury and one sweet. 3. Eton, Berkshire - Named after Eton College in Windsor where it is said to have been first served, Eton mess is a dessert of whipped cream mixed with chunks of meringue and fruit. The original dish, comprised of just strawberries and whipped cream, dates from the 19th century. 4. Helston, Cornwall - The Cornish town of Helston gives its name to the Helston pudding, a local steamed fruit pudding. Often made from suet and breadcrumbs, the pudding usually contains raisins, sultanas or similar dried fruits and, uniquely, ground rice. 5. Kendal, Cumbria - Kendal is famous for its mint cake, a small sugary confectionary flavoured with peppermint. Made from sugar, glucose syrup, water and peppermint oil, Kendal mint cake is renowned for being a high-energy food, and has long been used as such by local climbers and fell-walkers, and even explorers – the cakes were famously used as a quick source of energy by both Ernest Shackleton on his 1914 Antarctic expedition, and by Sir Edmund Hillary in his scaling of Mount Everest in 1953.

Charities Volunteering in Iceland 2016 My name is Freya Harris, and I am a 16 year old Esher College student currently studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Geography with the aspiration of becoming an astrobiologist in the future. At the start of my sixth form year, I signed up for what was in my opinion the most exciting extra-curricular activity on offer: a trip to volunteer in Iceland with an environmental organisation called Seeds. Since I first heard about the programme, I had wanted to take part. The trip seemed perfect for me, as a person passionate about protecting the environment and the beauty we are so lucky to live amongst in the world. I enrolled immediately and was very fortunate to be accepted as one of the only 20 students able to participate. The charity we will be volunteering for is a nongovernmental, non-profit Icelandic organisation that works towards environmental protection and awareness as well as intercultural understanding. As of yet, even we are not entirely sure what this work will involve! However, it is likely to include activities like the regeneration of hiking paths in forest areas and gardening. We have been warned that a 100% commitment level is needed, as the work will be physically difficult and will test our determination and endurance. This did not make me think twice about taking part, as I am willing and ready to give all my effort in order to make the most of the time we have in this beautiful country. The Village Voice is a great example of what I love about New Malden. As a Company we find that it is a great tool to give people an insight into the area before moving here. As a local resident and Secretary of the Malden Fortnight Committee I love the strong Community Spirit and the Village Vibe which I always find in the magazine as well as the support it gives to our events. Thank you Jenny! Nikki McGibbon, Groves Residential

Congratulations from all at Eye Contact on the past 10 successful years. Looking forward to being part of the next 10 years with Village Voice.

The trip also involves another slightly tricky aspect – raising a total of £1 600 for when we leave on 5th July next year, and stay for 9 days until 14th July. To reach this target, I will be organising various fundraising activities throughout the next year such as car boot sales and (vegan!) meal nights. I have also set up a MyDonate page, on which I would be extremely grateful to receive any donations, no matter how small, as every contribution will make a difference. The link to my page is: https://mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/freyaharris1 You can also find out more about Seeds here: http:// www.seeds.is/ Thank you so much!

A Malden Man Rajvir Randhawa Living in the midst of our friendly community it’s always interesting to hear what locals are up to in their lives. One conversation that keeps cropping up with people is how they’re in jobs they don’t especially enjoy- it pay the bills, but if they could, they’d love to do something else. And that’s something I can relate to. For most of my working life I was in jobs that were ok. I didn’t hate them- they just weren’t how I wanted to spend my days. But they they got me out of the house, paid the bills and made me feel I was playing my part. But something was amiss. So around the time I neared 40, having constantly read in various books that true success comes from being able to earn a living from what you truly love, I finally took action. I had always known I wanted to write, that was my thing. From a young age I began writing- not a lot, but I kept it up over the years. It was only as I approached middle-age and my own mortality came in to view, I felt deeply that life is too precious not to give it a go. So alongside my day job, I started to write regularly- after dinner; travelling; sitting on a bench during my children’s weekend activities; in bed at night. My writing improved. Then I lost my job working for a mobile apps agency and soon after, the world began to close in on me. Life got tough and I couldn’t see a way out. But, I hung in there and rode it out, emerging the other end stronger, focused, confident and resilient. Being out of work had forced me to seek out more novel options in my life. After a lot of dead ends, I found a way through. I married my 15 years of marketing agency experience with my writing and set up my new business- WordUp Communications in January this year. It’s a content marketing agency aimed at developing valuable content for marketing agencies, targeted at brands. And since the switch, my life is unrecognisable. I work from home, pop in to London for meetings, spend more time with my children and I get paid for doing something I love.

And sometimes I think back to how this all started. And I realise it started right here, when I sent an email to Jenny, the editor of the Village Voice, to ask if I could write for her publication. It was the first time I would share my writing with an audience, which was pretty terrifying. Jenny agreed and that first baby step, set me on a path which would lead me to getting my first paid work as a writer- a weekly blog post for a Hong Kong writing community; which later helped me get my first marketing agency client; which led me to start up my own business. And this all happened because I took the time to pursue my passion- without knowing where it would take me. A valuable lesson I’ve learned is when you spend time doing something you love, doors open to you that never existed and opportunities present themselves. As a consequence of where I am in my life, every day I try to do something that’ll move me closer to where I want to be tomorrow. Shameless plug - check out my website at www.wordup.agency
