Welcome to Your Village Voice Congratulations to all of you who have successfully completed Dry January, or who have yet to break their New Years’ resolutions. My decluttering is continuing at a slow yet steady pace, and each week more treasures are excavated and corners re-appear. Bathroom drawer re-organisation for me today. Bliss! February of course is the month associated with romance and roses, but in our house it’s all about the rugby. Yes, the Six Nations starts on the 3rd and weekends will be punctuated by afternoons shouting at the TV! Remember that the Village Voice is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event in 2018 and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. In order to deliver the magazine to most of the KT3 postcode, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, New Malden library, Tudor Willams and the Malden Centre but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. Until next time, best wishes,

Jenny

Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher P.S. Please remember to mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts, and get in touch by 17th of January if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the February edition, and 17th February for March.

New Malden History Fountain of information (part 3) by Robin Gill By 1887 the Norbiton Park Hotel was deeply embedded in New Malden society. Trading for twenty years, it was the headquarters and starting point for the Malden Harriers running team, and the headquarters for the village cricket team (Malden Wanderers). The hotel was also the base for the local lodge of the Oddfellows Society, and the local Working Men’s Conservative Association. It was commonplace to arrive at the Hotel midweek to find one of the spacious rooms used as an auction house and filled with bedsteads, chests of drawers, pianos, carpets and chandeliers. Catalogues were also made available for livestock auctions from the local farms. A particular point of sale was Blagdon Stud Farm, where Mr Clement Keevil earned an enviable reputation for breeding magnificent Shire Horses, This, together with the regular auctions of building plots in the area, made the hotel a popular rendezvous for all branches of society

There was even a meeting held at the Hotel to consider the formation of a local golf club. This would have been on a course laid out close to Malden College on land now covered by Haddon Close, Chatsworth Gardens, Woodfield Gardens and the Cromwell Avenue Open Space. Although it was agreed that a club be formed, nothing came of the idea. Golf was only to come to the area more than 10 years later with the formation of Coombe Wood GC. Dangerous profession The hazards of being landlord even in a place like New Malden continued. Charles Airey, a labourer of no fixed abode, but hailing from Wimbledon was charged with assaulting Mr Radford at the Hotel knocking him out. It had taken nearly a year for the case to come to court, and Mr Airey was actually arrested while trying to apologize to Radford. This was all the landlord wanted, but because of the arrest, it had to go to court. Obviously, Airey pleaded guilty, and was fined 1 guinea (£1 5pence). Radford was also assaulted by George Robinson a bookmaker who lived at Avenue Lodge which stands at the junction of Avenue Road and Cambridge Road. Robinson threw a bottle and two iron match stands. Fortunately, the stands missed but

shillings (75 pence) with half a crown 12½ pence extra (each way) if you wanted to occupy a box seat. Hiring the whole coach (12 seats) would cost 8 guineas £8-40pence. Various other coaches passed through Malden in the following years including the “Shamrock” and “Defiance” culminating with the Venture driven by Mr Vanderbilt, all changed horses at the Norbiton Park Hotel providing an interesting sight for the locals. Small boys were known to hitch a ride on the back of the carriage for a short distance.

the bottle hit Radford on his side, no doubt causing some degree of bruising. Robinson’s language was disgusting, and he refused to leave the premises, but by the time the police arrived, he had surprisingly fled! He was fined £5 6shillings and sixpence (£5 32½ p).

After several days illness, and contracting pneumonia John Radford died at the Hotel on Monday 3rd December 1893 aged 62, the funeral was an important affair involving a transparent hearse followed by many private carriages and preceded by twenty members of the oddfellows, who walked ahead of the coffin to the cemetery at Bonner Hill. Ten days later the hotel’s licence was transferred to Emma his widow.

The early 1890s also saw the start of New Malden being included on some of the coaching routes out of London. “The Magnet” operated by Mr Christmas started its journey from the hotels in Northumberland Avenue and travelled south to Reigate, changing horses at the Norbiton Park Hotel. The journey each way took three hours, and the return cost was 15

Back in the old routine Life went on at the Hotel, the Malden Harriers reformed after a couple of years dormant using the hotel as its base, and Mrs Radford seemed to have coped quite well with the routine of smoking concerts and dinners together with the regular clientele, but it must have been difficult for her when she had to

cater for a cricket match played at the Wanderers ground in Burlington Road between the married and single men of the village which attracted over 200 spectators. For the sake of recording history, the single men were triumphant.

More building land was being auctioned off at the hotel, particularly on the Kingston Road which was still comparatively empty near to where Dunbar Road was to be built. by not standing when “God Save The Queen” was sung, and his hat was forcibly removed. When Dicker objected, he was given two black eyes and forcibly marched outside through the glass door by Foote. Foote was fined £15, and sent to prison for one day, but this would be extended to a month if he did not pay. The hotel was renowned for its patriotism and when victory came in 1902 a marquee was erected on the lawn and a large crowd gathered to celebrate the news.

Third time lucky The Malden Wanderers last smoking concert of the year 1902 held at the hotel saw the first appearance of John Randall Burroughes a former schoolteacher from Norfolk with a very pleasant singing voice. He was to become the third husband of Emma Radford/ Morgan on 15th November, and the new landlord of the Norbiton Park Hotel.

Death in the family The hotel mourned the death of Queen Victoria in February 1901 when Mr Morgan draped the windows with purple and white ribbons, and a wreath of ivy tied with a bow of purple ribbon hung on the door of the entrance. The flag outside the stable was at half-mast. Unfortunately, the year also saw the death of George Morgan, Emma’s second husband and landlord of the Hotel aged 36. He, like his predecessor, was buried in Kingston Cemetery, his mother who died two months later was interred in the same grave. Later in the year it was announced that the new tramway system to be operated by London United Tramways Company would have stops close to the Hotel on the route to and from Kingston, in fact a terminus would be built until the line could be extended to Wimbledon. This would bring added custom into the Hotel, although they were resigned to losing a small piece of land to the laying of the track. During 1901/02 there was a major outbreak of smallpox in the London area. While mainly occurring north of the river, there were no physical barriers to the spread of the disease. So, when the driver of a vehicle carrying an infected passenger from Teddington to Cheam Hospital, stopped and went inside the hotel for a drink, suspicions were aroused. The vehicle (which was not an ambulance) carrying the unfortunate patient was left outside with the windows up and doors closed, but it soon attracted the attention of passers-by including children. The driver stayed for just one drink, but freely mixed with other customers. The patient subsequently died, and the driver was charged with the crime of exposure as a danger to the public, for which he was fined £3 or a month’s hard labour. Mrs Morgan and her staff were re-inoculated, and the other customers were advised to follow suit. Most customers are welcome most of the time, while some customers are welcome some of the time.

New Malden Matters

But a crime that seems to be on the increase, and affects us all, is environmental crime.

Cleaning Up New Malden New Malden Residents’ Association and Keep Britain Tidy are supporting several local community clean up events in New Malden from Friday 2nd March till Sunday 4th March. We are holding a day of action coordinated from the Kingston Environment Centre, at 1 Kingston Road, New Malden, KT3 3PT from 10:30 am to 5 pm on Saturday 3rd March. We will coordinate residents, businesses and community groups targeting up to six streets around KT3. If you need help for an eyesore you know about, or just want to join us, see our up to date website for contact details or contact Tariq on 07443 508514. Crime: the word makes you think of burglary, fraud or assault.

Litter dropping, dog fouling and graffiti, blight almost every area of our town. Our Council has powers, albeit delegated to a private company, to issue on the spot fines . But that is using the stick. Our aim is to make the carrot an attractive option. We need a cleaner, more pleasant environment for all to enjoy, to foster pride in New Malden. So what’s the solution? - We need to encourage a change in people’s behaviour. - Make ‘Pick it up and Bin It’ the motivating force. - Encourage a pride in our area being clean. - Use a combination of stick and carrot. - Reduce mice, rats and vermin from streets and houses. - A collaborative approach with all residents working with us and the Council. Have you seen any litter wardens in New Malden recently?

Do they have an effect in reducing litter ? If you have any stories, please drop us an email. We are coordinating with this years ‘Keep Britain Tidy’- Great British Spring Clean, with our own ‘Clean Up New Malden Campaign’ from Friday 2nd March till Sunday 4th March 2018 Full up to date details on our website www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk You might question: - Why should we clear up after lazy litter droppers? - What’s in it for me? - Wouldn’t I feel embarrassed cleaning the streets? To clean some areas, could seem like a big task. Bottles, paper and cartons strewn across pathways, often means that a neglected area, will stay a neglected area. People find satisfaction by teaming up with fellow pickers, and ridding a street of its debris . Getting out, exercising, meeting like-minded

neighbours and making friends is very rewarding. Together we can and will, bring back a sense of pride and responsibility for the street we live in. Litter droppers are less likely to be the first to offend in a clean well loved street. A clean tidy street free of potential dangers of hidden bottles and rubbish attracting vermin, will be more appealing to prospective house or flat purchasers or tenants. A clean area has more appeal to businesses and shoppers alike, increasing prosperity for all. Once we start to improve the aesthetics of public areas, owners and tenants will start to look at their own property’s kerb appeal, gardens, fences and painting. Occupiers will have more interest in reporting broken paving, blocked gully drains etc., and this will all add to motivation. So come and join us on Friday 2nd March. View from the City What will you give your Valentine? Justin Urquhart Stewart, Co-founder and Head of Business Development 7IM This year some 40% of the UK population is apparently going to be buying (romantic) gifts for their loved ones. Most of the money is, unsurprisingly, going to again be spent on dining out, jewellery, flowers, chocolates, and, of course, the frequently over-effusive cards. Money may be even spent by the singles trying to avoid any celebrations. But while any gifts will (of course) have been carefully considered, 7IM believes that there are a number of financial gifts that you could give your spouse instead and that would still be ‘giving’ in a fortnight’s time – long after the flowers have died and chocolates have been consumed – and they may even save you money!

some common sense suggestions that could prompt you to get some proper financial advice and not be scrabbling around for a present on 13 February. So here’s our starter for seven: 1. Income tax allowance It was some time ago that the government extended some of the marriage allowance benefits beyond those born before 1935, but some still have yet to take up their chance. These let you transfer up to £1,150 of your personal income tax allowance to your spouse if they earn more than you do. This could mean that you could reduce your spouse’s tax bill by £230 in the 2017/18 tax year and you can even backdate a claim to April 2015. Please do note though that there’s some attendant small print to digest. 2. Partner’s pension pots This is useful if your spouse doesn’t earn anything, and if you have used up your own pension allowances. And if you’re already retired, with proper professional advice, you may even be able to transfer money into a spouse’s pension fund, without paying tax, to benefit from any of their unused tax allowances. Caveats as always apply.

Seven Investment Management (7IM) doesn’t give tax advice, but we thought it worthwhile to think through

3.Capital gains tax If you’ve used up your own allowance of £11,300, there could be an occasion where you can benefit from gifting investments to your spouse if you as a couple want to benefit from their disposal. Yet again rules apply, but it could be worth finding out more.

6. Car insurance bills With multiple car households, a common occurrence today, insurance bills are automatically lower if your insurance company recognises that each car is probably doing fewer trips than if you only used the one car. Did you check that box on the form?

4. Emergency funds While this probably won’t result in any immediate benefits, it’s always worth thinking through what cash reserves you could need and, if necessary, topping them up. For some people, that stash could cover three months of spending, while others might want income for up to a year, and some want to keep a round number…everyone’s different, but please do have a think.

7. Family considerations Last, but by no means least, you may be able to benefit if your spouse, indeed if your broader family, has investments with the same firm as you even if you’re invested individually in entirely separate accounts. You won’t be able to see what each other is holding or learn any financial details, but they could be ‘banded’ together so that you benefit from the same (and hopefully a better) fee bracket. So have a think and realise that by considering these suggestions, you could earn more of a moniker than that of a soppy romantic!

5. Charitable donations While the craze to ‘give a goat’ has definitely had its day, you could consider a gift to your loved one’s charity of choice. Not only does this make a difference to the charity’s beneficiaries (especially if you check the gift aid box), but you can also offset that donation against tax if it’s a registered charity and you’re a high rate tax payer.

Gardening Time to Get Pruning Pippa Greenwood

At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your pruning will really benefit your plants: • For a small hedge or to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. Angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. To make a neat and level surface when cutting the top of a hedge, use a taut string as a guide line. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you can use it safely! • When removing stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, use ‘loppers’, which are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. When cutting back branches above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles. • Secateurs are used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems. Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and accurate cut. Always cut to an outward-facing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage flowering. • To remove larger tree branches or if you have fruit trees to prune, then a pruning saw is the perfect tool. Use a sawing action for best results and make the cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal quickly and the wound will be smaller and less prone to fungal rotting. • Check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Although most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, there are exceptions. • Some trees - mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal infection known as ‘silver leaf’. To reduce the likelihood of this, prune these trees in the summer unless there is

28

no alternative. • Pruning tools should be really sharp; if blunt, the job will need more effort and may result in damage to the plant from a jagged cut or crushed stems. • Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback - you will need to use secateurs, loppers or a saw to do this. • Stand back from time to time when pruning to check the overall appearance of the plant and judge which part to tackle next, as close up it is harder to see how your pruning is affecting the overall shape of the plant. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Parkin' some thoughts by Nick Hazell

Music It was Bob Marley that said “one good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain”. Those of us who have experienced a child’s first musical expression through the medium of the violin may have ear drums that would attest otherwise, but the right music played or listened to and attuned to our individual tastes can be medicine for the mind or a gin and tonic for the ear. I though do not possess a crotchet of musical talent. My effort to learn the recorder aged 9 is the sole musical return on my 45 years. It did not end well. Not only did I play all the wrong notes, but I somehow played them in the wrong order. Fortunately my own musical negligence is not reflected in my children. Whilst instruments come and go, singing is their one constant. Admittedly, it’s sometimes like living with a suburban version of the Von Trapps, with the addition of a demented miniature schnauzer occasionally providing a backing vocal or accompanying the saxophone, but they at least show signs of the musical talent sadly lacking in their father. Playing or listening to music though can have a beneficial effect upon us Parkies. It’s all about the rhythm. The beat in the music acts as a cue to perform movements which are no longer natural. The playlist is key (think more Katy Perry and less AC/DC) but when it works, it acts as my personal arbitration service settling otherwise debilitating disputes between my brain and legs. It’s a sort of ACAS for the mind. Having harnessed the power of song for the purposes of movement, the next step in my musically inspired Parky Prevention Policy is to investigate my own ability to sing. A lesser known

40

side to PD is its effect on the voice, making it softer and weaker and singing is known to improve those symptoms. However, there we return to my lack of musicality and the certainty that the results will again prove Mr Marley wrong in his assessment. What I need then is a discrete platform. Somewhere that I can practice the enunciation of my less than dulcet tones without anyone thinking an air raid siren has mistakenly gone off. How fortuitous therefore that I should live in the vicinity of some fine establishments of alternative musical therapy in the form of New Malden’s Karaoke bars. These are places where people who shouldn’t drink combine with those who shouldn’t sing. You can sing your heart out safe in the knowledge that no-one is listening or if they are, they won’t remember quite how bad you were come the morning. Those of you reading this that know me will be thinking that my appearance at such a venue is as likely as me undertaking a two week wild camping trip to Wales and I have to say that this almost insatiable desire to tread these particular boards has had me checking my medication. The drugs I take are well known for encouraging pre-existing compulsive behaviour, typically gambling, the use of ladies of negotiable affection and other reckless activities. But you see, I don’t think it is the drugs. In my case, they seem to have acted more positively, encouraging a hitherto disguised desire to try new things. Why else at my age would I also suddenly feel the need to go to the Glastonbury Festival? The muck spreader of gloom may have fanned its load upon my acreage, but why should that stop me or anyone else subjected to an unexpected event from doing the equally unexpected. It’s much easier to complain than to do. As Bob also put it “some people [choose to] feel the rain; others just get wet”. If I ever get to Glastonbury though, I guess I’ll do both!

A Photographer Dreams.... by Hugh Griffiths www.creativelight.org.uk I take my dog out for her morning walk to a nearby park which is only 10 minutes from our home. Beverley Park is mostly grass and has a children’s playground (where my children played when they were small); it also has a path running through the middle which is bounded by a line of trees on either side. As I have said earlier in this book, I like the starkness of trees in winter with the trunks and branches showing a shape that vanishes in the summer. Not that I don’t like the green of that period, but I really like the patterns made by the branches in winter. I usually meet up with a group of fellow dog-walkers and we talk and walk and throw things for the dogs. I also take my iPhone: and sometimes take the opportunity to photograph those trees. In this picture, the mist is rising, as is the sun behind them. The golden light and the mist give it an eerie feel – mist usually does that in my experience. I have edited it a bit – highlighting the mistiness and emphasising the clarity of the branches. Yet again, a photo taken with a smart phone camera can provide quality and enjoyment. As someone has said,

42

“the best camera is the one with you”. Not strictly true, but certainly our phones, which are always with us, can take perfectly adequate pictures. I took this next picture in South Africa. It was my first visit to a new client and I was in Pretoria for about 5 weeks. During that time, a friend of mine had suggested that I visit some friends of his about 215 miles north of the city. It’s always a risk to meet friends of friends, especially to stay for the weekend, and they were very quick to invite me to stay. I’m glad to say that we got on extremely well, perhaps helped by the 2011 Rugby World Cup taking place in New Zealand and being on the TVs in South Africa. I love watching rugby – and we spent a lot of time sitting with a glass or two of wine laughing at the adverts (when has it been a rugby player’s dream to have soft and smooth skin

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

by using a brand of skin cream? Why does the Range Rover Epoque look like an elephant has sat on the back?) and cheering our respective teams. But we did have time to visit a small game reserve which is part of the local area; this was my first adult experience of ‘raw’ wild animals, and it was fantastic to see the giraffe staring snootily at me, the zebra crossing, and many other animals. These egrets, however, were not there; they are in the estate where my (new) friends live. Outside one of the houses there is a decorative slab making up a water feature, and these two birds are at it slaking their thirst. It’s almost a mirror image – with the two egrets doing the same thing on opposite sides of the slab. I like that sort of picture - to me it’s a bit creative, and adds a bit of a question for the viewer – I suspect that one of your thoughts on looking at the image was that it was a reflection, and then you realised it couldn’t be. Not an artistic picture, but one that I enjoy and one that brings back good memories. The Narcissus is part of the daffodil family of flowers; and, of course, daffodils are a very Welsh flower. The arrival of crocus, snowdrops and the like is always a pleasant sign that Spring is coming, that winter is close to being defeated. And one of the (very few) benefits of global warming is that this is happening earlier each year. Seeing the bright colour of the flowers, especially when they are in large clumps really makes us (well, me certainly) feel better about the day. I took this picture some years ago – probably in one of the parks near us. (And, while not knowing where you took a photo isn’t the end of the world, it is always interesting. I wish I had made a note on the photo file’s electronic data about the place. The camera I use now has a GPS in it, so I can always find out where the picture came from). But I do remember a little bit about the photo. This particular flower was part of a small clump of daffodils and narcissi – but they were fairly widely spread. I was therefore able to photograph this one on its own, but with an aura of yellow behind it from the other flowers. I think that this really works – it highlights the flower and separates it from the main background colour. The flower itself is also in good condition. Most of the flowers that I photograph have, as I discover when editing the image, got a blemish or a broken edge. That can really detract from the impact of the picture – you may be wanting to show something that illustrates the briefness

of time, but usually you aren’t. It’s always a good rule to take a proper look at the whole picture before you take it. Check for anything in the viewfinder or screen that will take away from the perfect image you have in mind. The Malden Camera Club meets on most Thursday evenings at the Library in Kingston Road. We are a friendly group, and love our photography. Come along one evening. You will be very welcome!

Organisations Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch Now that we are in the year 2018 we will, of course, be commemorating the end of World War One and we at Malden and Coombe Royal British Legion have plans to make this a year of Remembrance in New Malden. One such commemoration is for The Royal Air Force which was formed in April 1918. We will keep you informed in The Village Voice of events of interest. Our member numbers have been increased recently by the amalgamation of Kingston RBL and we look forward to welcoming those members at our meetings and events. Our branch is now 97 years old and has struggled to gain local support on many occasions during those years. However we are lucky enough to have three people in the branch whose support has allowed the branch to continue and grow in strength; our President since 1992 Major Ron Morris, Tom MacKenzie our Vice President and Ken Smith our Chairman. Any organisation needs strong leaders and this branch is without exception. So we are very proud to report that on 13th January at RBL Surrey Annual Conference , our Chairman received The County’s Chairman’s Gavel special award for outstanding dedication and support to Malden and Coombe RBL. Plans for future events of course include The Malden Fortnight in July .The theme for the parade is “Let’s Club together for our Community”,so come and join us at Malden and Coombe RBL and you can be part of our float and walking group, dressed as sailors, or Poppy umbrella girls and men or whatever code of dress is decided this year! Call 07572 390203 to speak to our membership secretary and for only £19 per year you can become a member and join in the fun, whilst supporting our veterans and serving

members of the armed forces and their families who are in need. In addition, our friends at The Grafton Club will welcome you at our meetings and you can be involved with their evenings of entertainment throughout the coming year. ! We plan in the early part of the year to visit the Poppy factory as well as present a donation from money raised by the branch locally to Royal British Legion centres. If you know of any ex or current serving members of the armed forces who are in need, please encourage them to contact our Gateway First Point on 0808 802 8080. The help and support is just a phone call away. We heard recently of a young ex soldier whose wife had been killed in a road traffic accident and who was struggling to cope with not only his loss but his 3 year old son. The local RBL Welfare officer took on his case and supported him in obtaining a new home, childcare and work. The funds raised helped this family. With your help, The Royal British Legion can continue to help those in need. As a branch, we have a great time raising funds and hope to see some of you joining us during the coming year TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN AND THE FUTURE OF THE LIVING
