Welcome to Your Village Voice I hope that you’ve been enjoying the holidays and that you’ve been able to catch up with family and friends. At the time of writing, my plan to be organised hasn’t worked very well but am hoping it will all come together - in the nick of time! For the first time in years we are away doing the visiting so here’s for good weather and quiet roads... We will, however be back home for Christmas and Hogmanay - i wonder how our guests will react to haggis lasagne... Remember that the Village Voice is YOUR magazine so if you are helping to organise an event in 2016 and would like some FREE publicity then please do email details. Likewise if you are part of an organisation that could benefit from attracting new local members next year then why not send in an article. Did you know that in order to deliver the magazine to most of the KT3 postcode, we split the distribution over a two month period. So if you have had this edition delivered you probably won’t get the January one. There are a limited number of copies available from Waitrose, New Malden library, Tudor Willams and the Malden Centre but don’t forget that it is also published online - you can get the link from our website. So, until next month, best wishes

Jenny

New Malden History In The Beginning (Part 5) by Robin Gill

This year (2016) should be a year of celebration for the local area. It will be the 150th anniversary of the building of Christ Church. Fund raising As mentioned before, the growing population of New Malden was in need of a place of worship which could cope with the size of congregation, and would entitle them to a permanent vicar. One step along the way was the arrival on 19th April 1865 of the Rev Charles Stirling (formerly of Reading), and his second wife Mary Elizabeth. The Duke Of Cambridge had already promised a site on his estate and at the same time gave an acre of land for the building of a vicarage and garden. The land itself would have cost around £75 based on contemporary values. By June 1865, another four amounts of £100 had been promised by gentlemen of the area, provided the total £2000 needed was raised. At this stage, the organising party felt they had raised

6

£1500 including collecting cards, leaving them £500 short. By August, a committee including the Duke had been formed, and it was decided that the church should hold 400 persons out of a total population of 1000. The district was described as inclusive of all classes, but principally the poor. A plan had been drawn up by an architect based on the Early English style and the majority of the material to be used would be stone. Other members of the committee were: Edward Charles Baring (Coombe Cottage), John Clutton (Paddington) Rev Charles Stirling (New Malden) Henry Bingham Mildmay (Coombe End) Rev Robert Holberton (Norbiton) Rev Charles Woodward (Tottenham) The three reverends had connections to the church locally, and both Baring and Mildmay had banking interests and lived in Coombe. Clutton was a renowned surveyor, who also agreed to act as treasurer for the appeal. Stone age By June the following year (1866) everything was ready for the laying of the foundation stone by Louisa Emily Charlotte Baring the wife of Baring of Coombe Cottage. As mentioned in a previous article, a procession started

from St James in Poplar Grove, and included one of the architects of the new church Mr Henry Thomas Freshwater who lived in Kingston Road carrying a silver trowel, and a mallet on a silver waiter. He was accompanied by the builder Mr Cumber (of Nutt and Cumber). The building would probably only accommodate 200 worshippers instead of the larger number that was wanted, but as the Rev Stirling stated that afternoon there was the opportunity to expand the church at a later date. Mrs Baring was thanked for accepting the invitation to attend, was presented with the silver trowel and asked to lay the stone. The mortar was spread under the stone which was then placed in position, Mrs Baring then used a plumb line (vertical equivalent of a spirit level) to check it was placed accurately, she hit the stone a couple of times with the mallet, announcing “the stone to be duly laid”. A hymn to that effect was then sung, and following prayers, the service ended. Underneath the stone, had been placed a copy of the Times for that day, and a bottle containing some coins. After some words from Rev Holberton, a collection was taken which raised £40 3/11 (£40.20p). A sale of gift items raised an extra £1 6/1 (£1.30p). The children from the Sunday School then returned to the church in Poplar Grove for drinks, cakes, and buns. It was during the course of the actual building work that summer that the need of an extra 100 places caused the construction of a further aisle, which duly meant that a further appeal had to be made for extra funds. A lady from the district offered £50 provided that eight similar contributions were made from other parties (£50 is the equivalent of over £4000 today). The population of the parish was increasing rapidly, and had increased by 100 since the appeal started. The consecration of the church took place on 3rd December, the building proceeding at a rapid pace. The service was led by the Bishop Of Winchester Charles Richard Sumner (brother of the late Archbishop Of Canterbury) supported by a host of reverend gentlemen. The service was followed by lunch at Coombe House courtesy of Mrs Sim. Description Measurements of the Church: Length of Nave 49ft 6ins (15 metres) by 28 ft (8.5 metres) Chancel 25ft 4 ins (7.75 metres) by 19ft (5.75 metres) Vestry 16ft (5 metres) by 10ft 9ins (3.25 metres) The church was faced with Kentish Ragstone lined with Hassock Stone, with a dressing of Bath Stone. Turrets stood above the junctions of the nave and chancel each containing a bell. The pews were open to all worshippers, and the organ which stood in the chancel

Stone Laying Hymn of the church was manufactured by Bevingtons of Soho (Bevingtons who built over 2000 organs, only ceased trading in 1950 after 156 years). The instrument was presented by Mr Henry Bevington and paid for by Baring and Mildmay who also insured that any outstanding debts for building work were cleared. The builders of the church were Nutt and Clumber of Albany Street Regents Park, and the architects were Henry Thomas Freshwater and John Raphael Rodrigues Brandon.

Freshwater later became a local and lived in Lime Villas on Kingston Road. He was born in Buckinghamshire, and moved to New Malden with his wife Katherine sometime in the late 1860s. He went into partnership with Raphael Brandon in 1863, and they worked together until 1867. Henry became an important member of the community in this area, advising the Local Board on subjects like sewerage disposal, and becoming a member of the Board himself in 1879. He was also a contributor towards the new schools being built in the Groves. As far as the church which he helped design; he became a regular worshipper, and took great delight in giving biblical readings as part of the service. The family moved to Surbiton in 1893, and he finally died in Herne Bay on 20th April 1911. Brandon known as Raphael began practicing as an architect in 1843, and specialised in building or renovating West Entrance at churches. He married in All Saints Kingston 1860, but lost his first born child the following year. He was commissioned to renovate All Saints in Kingston in 1862 (a job which took over three years). He removed the west gallery, and created the great west window. In the process he uncovered the hidden west door which dated back to Norman times. Unfortunately, he judged it incapable of restoration, and after being photographed it was destroyed. After the building of Christ Church in New Malden, he turned his attention to Holy Trinity Church in Richmond which he designed in 1869.

Christ Church It seemed that such sadness was partly caused by his inability to express himself through his work in the way he would have liked without having to conform to strict designs. Still, we in New Malden are lucky enough to be left with one of the best examples of his work, so the next time you are at Christ Church hunt out the foundation stone, and have a look around the building celebrating its sesquicentenary.

It is interesting to note that one of Raphael’s employees in 1870 was Thomas Hardy aged 30 trying to make his way in architecture, before becoming one of England’s foremost authors. Hardy remembered his place of employment so well, he used it descriptively in his novel “A Pair Of Blue Eyes” a couple of years later. Raphael’s wife Harriet died in 1874 aged only 36, and he fell into a pit of depression. Money worries mounted up, and on the morning of 8th October 1877, he decided to end it all sitting on the sofa in his office in London, and placing a pistol against his head pulled the trigger.

Community The Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society Dear Reader I am a member of The Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society and having grown up in New Malden I always thought I knew quite a bit about our town, but since I became a member I now realise how much I have forgotten , or simply did not know at all about the origin or history of our community and I’m still learning. As a Society our aim is to preserve recollections of places and people who wish their memories of New Malden to be remembered as life was, before too many changes in life styles affect our town as it obviously will in time to come. The High Street, or as it was affectionately known as ‘the village’ when I was a child many years ago was a thriving assortment of individual shops where you could buy anything and everything from a gallon of paraffin, a pint of cockles or a pristine pram for your happy event. This of course was long before the arrival of supermarkets, fast foodshops and not forgetting the numerous charity shops of today We have published two booklets currently available, firstly Monday Was Always Washday, recalling many memories of people who lived, went to school, or worked in New Malden. Secondly, We Knew You Were Coming, this is dedicated to the three Victoria Cross reciprients who lived in New Malden and Coombe. It tells of tbeir lives, courage and sacrifices they gave during the dreadful years of war time 1st and 2nd. Copies of these booklets will be donated to local secondary schools for their refererence libraries, as we are eager to encourage young people to take an interest in our projects.

We also offer an annual history competition for schools who wish to take part. The pupils are asked to write essays on a subject of their choice and the winning entry receives the Lloyd Award For History Shield. It is said that dwelling on nostalgia is a part of growing older, but if you have lived in our town for many years, or are newly arrived, would you like to help us to preserve our history or learn more about your home town. We have a website, you don’t have to be a member to use it, which gives all information about us and our many activities. Or come along to one of our monthly meetings, held at the Baptist Church. We have guest speakers many of who have been or are involved in local businesses, trades or shops, a wealth of local history very interesting to listen to. We hope you will contact us if you have any questions, or would like to give us your recollections, we would most appreciate them. New Malden Matters The Groves Association We are a residents’ association representing 151 member households, i.e. 260 individual members. The Groves Association was set up nearly 30 years ago in 1987, in response to traffic problems at the time. Over the years we have been involved with many traffic issues and a variety of campaigns such as the one to have part of The Groves designated a Conservation Area and others to oppose unsuitable planning developments. We have presented petitions to Council regarding traffic and road safety issues over the years; represented the Association at planning meetings to stand against proposed planning applications; given evidence at Public Enquiries and also ensured the local community was represented at both local and Kingston policing committees for over 25 years. We have opposed the Shell Garage site development

and other proposed developments on Coombe Road as they will have a huge impact on The Groves in many ways. Whilst there have been a few fairly quiet years there is currently a lot of activity on the Planning front now. Two of our members, Zbig Blonski and Barbara Delamere, are active members of the New Malden Futures Group and they are involved with the proposals for Cocks Crescent and by the Station. Whilst these areas are not on our patch their impact on New Malden would greatly affect those of us living in The Groves. Zbig and Barbara together with Sandra Flower (Chair of The Groves Association) have all been part of deputations who have met with the various Developers currently involved in the area and with Guildhall Officers and Councillors. We have also forged links with the Beverly Ward Residents Association and have liaised with them on the various issues mentioned above. Zbig and Barbara also represent The Groves Association at the New Malden Farmers Market; Zbig is on the committee and Barbara is a volunteer. Sandra has long been our contact with the local police. The Association keeps in touch with members via email as often as we can in order to keep members up to date and informed. We have had great support from members for nearly 30 years and especially thank our Road Reps who deliver newsletters from time to time to members. We would welcome new members who live or work within or adjacent to The Groves. You may reach us via: grovesassociation@ btinternet.com Happy 10th Birthday, Village Voice! Well done Jenny for doing such a fantastic job! My family and I are looking forward to receiving the magazine every month and reading about what’s going on in the local area. As a local yoga teacher I’ve found advertising in the publication invaluable! Best wishes from Christine at Yogaberry The Richard Challoner School community wishes the Village Voice editorial team all the best for the next 10 years! We have regularly advertised in the Village Voice and have been very pleased with the response and awareness that the magazine has generated for us. We feel the magazine is fairly unique and a useful tool for local businesses, educational organisations and community groups.

Her parents, (who live in New Malden) have supported her and backed her financially throughout her years of training and they will continue to do so. However, Tanysha now has additional travel expenses as she needs to play in some European tennis tournaments so she can gain the correct level of International Tennis Federation (ITF) points which are required, to gain entry into Junior Wimbledon and other grand slam tournaments. She and her doubles partner have recently beaten Marina Evakovic and her doubles partner, who are ranked No. 22 in the world. Tanysha is currently No. 112 in the Girls European ranking. We look forward to seeing Tanysha’s ranking climb higher and higher in the near future! If you would like to support Tanysha, by donating to cover some of her tennis tournament travel expenses. Please go to www.gofundme.com/ TanyshaDissanayake. You can also follow Tanysha’ s progress on her Facebook page – Tanysha Dissanayake. Thank you for supporting a Local Girl’s Tennis Dream. Jo Beadle

Tanysha Dissanayake, who was a pupil of Christ Church Primary School, has been playing tennis since she was 4 years old and hopes to reach Junior Wimbledon next year. She is being coached and mentored by Jofra Porta who runs his own successful Tennis Academy in Majorca. He has coached and mentored past champions Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya who have both reached No. 1 in the world. He has taken Tanysha under his wing and believes she is talented, hardworking and dedicated enough to also achieve a top world ranking. Tanysha currently trains for 4.5 hours a day, 6 days a week. She is a very bright girl who has already achieved 2 A* GCSE’s for Maths and Biology which she took just before she turned 13. Next year, she will take her GCSE’s in Chemistry, Physics and Spanish. Tanysha works very hard and is determined to help others in the future. She has great empathy with children who are fighting cancer and wants to support them financially and personally in both the UK and Sri Lanka in the future.

A photographer dreams January -

by Hugh Griffiths – www.creativelight.org.uk Well, last January didn’t manage to have a lot of snow and I didn’t get any cute pictures of the robin in our garden. But there were lots of other opportunities: in early January I went to Bushy Park (that place keeps coming up – I must go somewhere else!) and took a lot of pictures of the seagulls and the swans on the ponds. At ne point, fairly near the car park there are some posts crossing the pond; and the seagulls really like to stand on them. I took a great picture of a row of these birds all looking cold and weary as they stood on the posts. But the picture I preferred was this one. One of the birds was preening itself – and for all the world it looks as if it is being very modest as it bowed its head and closed its eyes in a show of (I presume) false humility. I did take other pictures of this bird – but they weren’t as effective; in one of them the body was fine, but I had managed to cut off its feet, and in another the head was arched back as it cleaned its feathers. Lovely – but they didn’t show the story I had in mind. This picture isn’t technically perfect – parts of the seagull are just out of focus – and I

will have to try next time with a wider aperture. I think that the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley are a brilliant place to take photos. There is such a wide range of plants, trees and vistas – and I find that the Alpine houses always give me some good shots. But the big glasshouse in the gardens is often filled with tropical butterflies through January and February. This is a great opportunity to wander around looking at the plans as well as seeing the colourful butterflies scooting around the place. They aren’t always easy to photograph because they often settle for such short periods of time that by the time you’ve got your camera ready they have moved off to the next plant. So, keep alert with your camera set up and prepared to take a picture as soon

get here. But its worth trying and there is no reason why you can’t get good photos. By the way – if the RHS does this again, its well worth getting there at opening time – the butterflies are still a bit sleepy and so they will be much easier to photograph. Also, I usually take my tripod in – and I always realise what a mistake that is. Its heavy and gets in the way for quick photography. Sometimes its useful – but not here! Don’t forget the Malden Camera Club always welcomes newcomers to its meetings …

When times are tough you have to shout about your business

as you see the situation. This butterfly – its called, for obvious reasons, the Glasswing butterfly – seemed to be more amenable to posing for its portrait. The shape of the leaf the butterfly is standing on gives more interest to the picture and the sharp focus from front to back of the butterfly was important to give a good portrait. I was using my 100mm Macro lens, with an ISO of 16000 (yes, sixteen thousand!) to take this picture – I suspect that most compact cameras and, indeed, many DSLRs would find it difficult to get the clarity that I was able to

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

A FOOLISH FTSE I find it faintly foolish that the main index that is quoted to us every night is one that has only the vaguest connection with the country it is purported to reflect or represent. The FTSE100 is merely a listing of the largest companies (by capital value) that are listed on the London Stock Exchange. One could quite sensibly surmise that the UK’s main index would thus have a significant proportion of UK related businesses, and reflect an equally significant proportion of the UK economy. The reality however shows that this couldn’t be much further from the truth. The FTSE figures from Thomson Reuters actually show that for this largest group of companies, roughly twenty something percent of their revenue is actually sourced from the UK. The reality is that this main index would be better described as a global index merely based in Britain and not representing the value of UK PLC. Some of these companies are in fact not British at all, such as SABMiller, Fresnillo, and our old Chilean copper mining favourite Antofagasta. So perhaps we should look to the FTSE250 to find our real UK companies? However even here it seems that only around 45% of the revenues from these companies are derived from the UK, and taking it further to cover the rest the FTSE All-share Index shows that only just over 50% of the revenues are from Britain. Now on one hand this is a great reflection of how international both our markets and many of our leading companies are, and we should rejoice that we have such a broad church being represented. However, I also find it extremely misleading. If like me you believe one of the prime drivers of an economy is confidence, then feeding the population misleading information about the state of our economy is, and I believe has been, rather dangerous. Currently we have a FTSE100 which has a disproportionately high make up of its members from the mining, extraction, oil and gas industries, and as we saw last week many of the commodity related companies have been very badly hit by the fall off in value as the much hyped commodity super cycle has found that its wheels have come off with a crash.

24

Thus the net effect of furrowed brows from unknowing newsreaders expressing faux fears and concerns over the state of our stockmarkets is likely rather to be negative. To them stockmarkets are UK stock markets, are mainly comprised of UK companies and reflect the UK economy.

As we can see this is not simply true. However for the viewing public, such worried tones will, if repeated each night serve only to sap away our confidence in anything to do with the economy. So in my view this is more than misleading, it is financially dangerous when we are striving hard to sustain the recovery of our economy in a very competitive environment. Let’s then have a UK index, reflecting the success or otherwise of the UK businesses and its economy. A clearer message for us all. Finished with the Eurozone? A petition signed by 50,000 Finns has forced Finland’s parliament to debate as to whether they should remain in the single currency or not. A lot of the public dissatisfaction with both the EU and the Eurozone follows an extended period of economic weakness. In fact their economy shrank by 0.2% in the third quarter of 2015 meaning that the economy was on track to see its fourth straight year of contraction. An IMF report has highlighted that Finland has been affected by weak demand from not only the rest of Europe but was also impacted by trade issues with Russia. Exports seem to have suffered with the decline of the once mighty Nokia and a fall in the paper industry. Add to that the increased cost of an aging population and there is also a considerable drag on growth. The result is that the debate on Euro exit is now a serious issue as the pressure from centre right and further right parties seems to be growing. So there was a Northern Stock Exchange. Just to follow on from my writing about the potential for a Northern Powerhouse last week, my brain vaguely remembered some history regarding a northern stock exchange that briefly existed for a while. In 1965 the Liverpool and the other northern stock exchanges did in fact come together to form the Northern Stock Exchange to focus more effectively in raising and investing capital for firms in the region. Sadly though this was amalgamated into the London Stock Exchange and in fact the Liverpool trading floor finally closed in 1985 just before Big Bang in London. Unfortunately the Exchanges at that time were primarily run by stockbrokers and jobbers, whose focus was on share transactions and commissions and not really on their primary purpose of an exchange - namely to raise local capital for local businesses in the most cost effective and efficient way possible. They often dealt with smaller companies, with small numbers and values of transactions, which meant that according to their business model of depending on trades and commissions, they couldn’t continue. If they had focused on capital raising it could have been a very different story, and the potential northern powerhouse would already have in a place a northern investment exchange.

And finally… Refusal to pay the bills of one’s tailor was famously almost a point of honour among English gentlemen in past centuries and Winston Churchill was no exception, newly released archives show. Britain’s World War Two leader had racked up a bill of £197 by 1937 - around £12,000 at today’s prices - with Savile Row tailor Henry Poole and Co before he was finally asked to pay up. He took offense, refused to settle the bill and never darkened Poole’s door again. Despite the arrears, the tailor had continued to make clothes for Churchill, said James Sherwood, a historian who has examined Poole and Co’s archives. ‘Churchill said it was for morale, it was good for us [Henry Poole] to dress him and he wasn’t aware we were short of cash. He never did pay, and never came back – he never forgave us,’ Sherwood added on Poole’s website. Churchill was certainly in exalted company when it came to not settling tailors’ bills. The son of author Charles Dickens, for example, ran up a bill with Poole which eventually had to be paid by his father. When he was Prince of Wales in the 1870s, King Edward VII, made “infrequent payments on an account that accumulated over years”. When a bill was eventually sent to the prince, he withdrew his custom and only came back 20 years later when he became King.

Other famous - and better behaved - customers of the tailor included author Bram Stoker, Prussian Prime Minister Prince Otto von Bismarck, American banker J.P. Morgan and Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, who was visited in person by the tailors in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. When company founder Henry Poole died, his highprofile clients owed him a huge amount and the firm was in a bad financial situation, the archives show. The last surviving letter from Poole, written in 1875, said: “there will be nothing much to leave behind me. I have worked for a prince and for the public and must die a poor man.” What a bunch of bounders and cads. Happy New Year! Events Bringing the BARD to life “The concept for this year’s Coombe Girls’ School production was inspired by a Year 8 student back in the summer. In a letter to a character from the novel ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio, she wrote: ‘it is our differences that unite us.’ Having decided on a change from the traditional musical this year, we thought this was a profound and fitting message to drive our production of Shakespeare’s play. It is only with the tragic deaths of Juliet and Romeo that the two families are finally united; if only they had heard the wisdom of our young people sooner, and realised that their differences could in fact prove a point of positive connection. The setting of a community festival came next: a place where all parts of the community can come together to share their creative work and celebrate their diversity. Why ‘Juliet and Romeo?’ We are a girls’ school, and proud to work with confident, caring and ambitious young women. Juliet is all of these things. This is also an edited version of Shakespeare’s text. With a playful twist on the title, we hope that our audience will expect something slightly different from the production. The show features Drama, Music and Dance, and we are proud of how our talented performers have risen to the challenge of performing Shakespeare and making his language accessible to a contemporary audience. With this production, we have sought to include as many performance forms as possible, and bring them together in a celebration of everything that is Coombe. It has also been an exciting time working with our Parents and Friends Association at Coombe to give us the opportunity to bring our ideas and creativity to the stage at the Rose Theatre.” Laura Burwell, Head of Drama Having been lucky enough to have seen many of Coombe’s productions I have always thought that the pupils deserved a bigger stage. I have been attending amateur and professional productions since I was seven years old, and hope I can recognize the essential ingredients of a successful one. First class tuition, coupled with a display of talent and great energy, always impress audiences, it makes for a rare and wonderful experience.

36

Thus it was that I found myself meeting with senior members of staff, proposing that I investigate the

possibilities of this year’s production being moved to the 900 seat “Rose Theatre Kingston, with its large stage, and the daunting prospect of The Parents’ and Friends Association assuming the mantle of producer. I was encouraged by the attitude of the staff, who may well have doubted that it could happen, but basically said “go for it”. I was further encouraged by The Rose Theatre giving their consent for very little cost to be involved, and absolutely delighted when Sarah Melbourn the Director of Greenfield Estate Agents in New Malden, generously agreed to be the School’s sole sponsor! This leaves the PFA with just one thing to worry about as producer; everything! The chance to perform on a well-known large stage is daunting and there will probably be “first night nerves” and self-doubt, but I believe that this production will live long in student memory, and be both character forming and confidence boosting. Ralph Barwick Chairman, Coombe Girls’ School, Parents’ and Friends Association. “Being part of Juliet and Romeo was a great experience for me at my new school. It really got me involved with the school and it helped me meet lots of new people, which is great when you’re a newbie! The auditions were really intense and I was really worried I wouldn’t make the cut, so I was so excited when I found out I made it into the Capulet ensemble. Lots of my friends made it too, so all the rehearsals were really fun and enjoyable!” A Year 7 student “Juliet and Romeo has been so much fun, we are all really excited to perform in such a big theatre because it is such a change from our normal rehearsal space. All of the cast have become really good friends and I couldn’t think of a better group of people to perform with. We can’t wait to show everyone the final show after we have been working on it for a long time.

We have all really enjoyed ourselves and we hope you enjoy the show.” A Year 9 student “For my last year at my school of 7 years and my last of 5 school productions, performing at the Rose Theatre feels like a fitting end. This year we took a step away from our usual musicals; adapted from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Coombe Girls’ brings you ‘Juliet and Romeo’! We’ve all enjoyed playing with the structure, adding both music and dance to give our piece a festival theme, resulting in a high-energy, vibrant and modern adaptation of one of my favourite Shakespeare plays.” Year 13 student

Mon 15 Feb, 7.30pm The Blues Band 2015 sees The Blues Band Celebrate their 35th year together Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher. Many of The Blues Band’s 21st century fans weren’t even born when these five virtuosos, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. No one could have predicted that, 35 years on, they’d still be dazzling audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. With this line-up, it’s hardly surprising. Tickets: £14 - £21* Tue 16 - Sun 21 Feb The Gruffalo’s Child Following hot on the heels of The Gruffalo’s monstrous success comes The Gruffalo’s Child - with attitude! Health For an enjoyable ski season make sure you get ski fit and minimise injury risks! by Paul Davey, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The New Victoria Hospital, Kingston

The ski season is here again! If you are heading for the slopes do make sure that you are ski fit so that fatigue does not cause you to pick up any unnecessary injuries. From an orthopaedic point of view the most common things that we see are twisted knees and injuries to the hand and wrist including skier’s thumb. Make sure that your bindings are not too tight to avoid knee injuries and if you are snowboarding, make sure that you do wear your wrist guards. If you are skiing then make sure that your wrist straps are not wrapped around the hand too tight so that if you do fall, you pick up an injury from the equipment that is meant to be helping you. However if you are unfortunate enough to sustain any skiing injuries there is an experienced team of orthopaedic surgeons at The New Victoria Hospital, specialising in the sorts of injuries that are commonly picked up on the slopes. Best of all, get ski fit before you go and avoid running in to trouble all together!

Gardening Make Room for Roses Pippa Greenwood

It’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in local garden centres or from specialist rose nurseries. Although roses look good in beds, borders and containers, why not create your own fantasy rose arch or rose-clad arbour? Transform an existing arch or pergola by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour for many summers to come. Alternatively, create your own using sturdy timber or buy a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit. Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient - walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they have somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility.

Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place, keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring. Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! Good varieties for planting over pergolas and arches include Veilchenblau ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ (climber), Excelsa ‘Crimson Shower’, Albertine Albericbarbier ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Iceberg’ (climber), Malvern Hills ‘Super Fairy’, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’. Make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood. com and your garden-ready

New Malden Matters

New Malden Residents’ Association The climate change march in London on 29th November and the climate talks in Paris are the backdrop to this month’s topic, the crucial public health issue of the poor air quality in London. The mayor is responsible for air quality, so we will be scrutinising all the manifestos for the election next May. As the recent book, London Fog, reminds us, the Thames basin is prone to mists and has been notorious for its smokiness. Queen Elizabeth I complained about the effects of burning coal, as did the 17th century diarist, John Evelyn , who called London a ‘hell on earth’, ‘full of stinke and darknesse’. As London grew the problem became worse, and by the beginning of the nineteenth century some fogs lasted a week. By the 1880s there were up to 60 fogs a year. Conditions improved somewhat as gas started to replace coal as a heating fuel and electric motors replaced steam engines, but air quality was still poor. The notorious ‘Great Killer Fog’ of December 1952 lasted a week and may have caused 12,000 deaths. Even so, the government of the day was reluctant to act due to lobbying by manufacturers, and the Clean Air Act 1956, an important milestone in environmental improvement, originated in a private member’s bill. The history of public health, particularly in London, is one of battles against vested interests. Since the Clean Air Act the use of coal for domestic heating has declined greatly- 85% of homes now use natural gas as their main source of heating. As a result, the level of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere has improved greatly. However, traffic and aviation are now key polluters, and levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter are worryingly high. Up in the Air, a new report by King’s College London/Policy Exchange, has found that an eighth of the area of London exceeds the EU Air Quality Directive on NO2. In terms of capital cities, overall the quality of London air is better than that in, for example, Rome and Madrid, but the NO2 level is comparable to Shanghai and Beijing. London is not alone in this in the UK, and in April 2015 the UK Supreme Court ordered the government to redraft its

national action plan on air quality. In Kingston, 2,491 schoolchildren and 23,815 workers suffer from poor air quality, based on the data from air quality monitoring stations. Air quality maps show that inner London and the area round Heathrow suffer from poorer air quality than we do in Kingston, but we have areas of moderately poor air in central Kingston, particularly Eden Street and Cromwell Road, and near the A3, which loops round us in New Malden. Diesel cars were promoted on the basis that they were ‘better for the environment’ in terms of CO2 emissions, but their role in other forms of pollution was glossed over. Up in the Air states that 45% of the NO2 comes from vehicles, and 17% from domestic gas. Many residents of New Malden are worried about air quality and the Residents’ Association plans to meet Kingston Council Officers during 2016 to get a clearer idea of the overall picture and discuss measures to reduce emissions in and around New Malden. If we only continue talking about this problem without actually doing anything, air quality will get worse and people will suffer. In addition, we have the possibility of another runway at Heathrow which will probably lead to increasing levels of pollution as well as noise levels. But while there are some collective actions which can be taken to improve air quality, such as better traffic management and modernising bus fleets, we also need individual behaviour change. Are we willing to reduce our car travel, turn down the thermostat and put on a jumper? Liz Meerabeau New Malden Residents’ Association www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk newmaldenresidents@gmail.com

Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges. TIP For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor! Organisations Royal British Legion Malden & Coombe Branch New Malden again turned out in numbers on Remembrance Sunday to show their respect for lives lost in wars and conflicts. Thanks to all age groups who gathered at the Memorial to join us for the service. Parades had been under threat nationally due to pressure on Police staffing levels. However, following our discussions with the Council and Police, the Council committed to provide stewards for traffic management. We thank the Police for their continued presence and support. Our thanks go to Kingston & Malden Scout & Guide Band who led us in the parade and provided accompaniment for the hymns. Thanks too to Katy Loffman and Becky Mills, Christ Church lay readers, who conducted the service and led the prayers. Georgina Thorne and Kitty Gomes, Christ Church Primary School pupils, served as wreath bearers to the Mayor who laid the wreath on behalf of Kingston borough. Also attending were MPs, Zac Goldsmith and James Berry, Councillors and representatives of the Forces together with many schools and organisations from the local community. All laid wreaths of remembrance. Our thanks go too to the Methodist Church and to Waitrose for support with the arrangements. This year’s Poppy Appeal raised more than £24,000. Huge credit is due again to organisers Tina and Stephen Corr for their efforts. Thanks to individual collectors and the team of helpers who delivered and collected tins and boxes. Our appreciation also goes to schools, local businesses, churches and organisations for collecting and to Lloyds Bank staff for assistance with banking.
