Dear Readers

“We might be in the minority in Chez Stuart - in fact, the world! - but I have to admit that the ‘Village Voice’ HQ is essentially a football-free zone!! Yes, there really is very little world-cup action going on in our house this June / July - which might leave you thinking that we have very little to do / talk about or watch on the telly!! But....on the contrary! Thanks to the warm weather and long summer evenings, there’s quite a considerable amount of watering to be done, his self has been enjoying lots of quiet time on the allotment, my girls (initially bereft of their fave programmes due to skewed schedules) have been rediscovering the joys of bouncing on their trampoline and craft activities (what would we do without the phenomenon that is loom bands?) and I have been taking my pick of the best ‘box sets’ around (when not taking advantage of near empty shops and supermarkets the second the whistle blows at the start of an England match). By the time you read this, who knows what will be going on in Brazil, who will be in, who will be out! But as ever at this time of year, whatever happens this July, I’ll personally. be helping to ‘kick off’ the start of Malden Fortnight, making sure we score a real winner this year and pushing for extra time!! And, with the theme of ‘Carnival’ this year, I’ll at least be doing my bit to help the spirit of Rio live on in the suburbs...... Full details can be found on pages 37 & 38. By the way, there may still be a couple of spare stall spaces left for Craft Fair day (12th) - check on the webste maldenfortnight.co.uk if that’s of interest to you. Anyway, as always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

Remembering Mary Gillett

The Malden and Coombe Branch of the Royal British Legion are mourning the passing of their Secretary, Mrs Mary Gillett who died in St George’s Hospital on Tuesday the 27th of May 2014 aged 73. The number attending her funeral at the Kingston Crematorium on Wednesday the 11th of June 2014 showed how much loved and popular she was. Mary devoted the last 20 years of her life to supporting good causes and helping others. Initially she was the Secretary of the local branch of the Lest we Forget Association a charity that provides and funds outings for the elderly and disabled ex service community. At least once a quarter Mary could be seen on a coach, having gathered a party together, taking them out for the day A pub lunch, a visit to a garden centre and sometimes a theatre were the usual destinations. At the same time Mary was also a member of the Women’s Branch of the Royal British Legion and was always ready to visit those who were in hospital or required assistance in some way. In 1999 she moved across to the main Malden and Coombe Branch of the Legion to become a member of the branch committee and shortly after her arrival she became the branch secretary. She said at the time “I will do it for a short period until you find somebody more suited”. We never did! She became a tower of strength always willing to help and she seldom said no. It is largely due to her efforts at a time of crisis that the branch still exists. This was recognised by her receiving, several years ago, a Mayor’s Community Award and later on the Secretary’s Cup from the Surrey British Legion Headquarters for the most efficient branch secretary for that year in Surrey. We will miss her. She was a good and caring person and a good friend to many. May she rest in peace.

New Malden History Just in case (part 1) by Robin Gill

The Civil Defence Act of 1948 set in place the establishment of a Civil Defence Corps throughout Great Britain. The divisions of the Corps would be organised by County councils and metropolitan boroughs. Enrolment would be open equally to both men and women on a voluntary basis, and members would be provided with a uniform and training. The Corps were to be used by the local authority to “carry out tasks required by the government”. Any capital expenses involved would be 75% paid for by the government, and any building requirement would receive a 100% grant. Recruitment started on November 15th 1949 along with that of auxiliary firemen, special constabulary, and the National Hospital Service

Reserve. Various councils started to advertise for a full time temporary Civil Defence Officer to help with the areas defence plans, at a salary of about £700 pa. These officers would organised the recruitment of volunteers and take them through basic training. The divisions were split into six sections: • Headquarters (Included Intelligence, operations, signals, scientific and reconnaissance.) • Wardens (Responsible for local neighbourhood, point of contact for information, link for public and authority) • Rescue (search and rescue people from damaged buildings) • Ambulance (provide first aid at the scene) • Pioneer • Welfare (care of homeless and emergency feeding) The training for the groups was initially restricted to four or five hours a month and included information about High Explosive (HE)

By the 3rd December 1949 15,000 people (11,000 men and 4,000 women) had volunteered throughout England and Wales, with the wardens sections being the most popular preferred section. This had risen to 32,000 by June 1950, and 700 general instructors had been produced by training schools,(Falfield and Easingwold) who in turn had trained nearly 3,000 instructors locally who had received a green certificate enabling them to train recruits. After receiving ten hours training to an agreed standard, the recruit was entitled to a CD badge and uniform (battledress,

In Malden, the Council decided to form a Civil Defence Committee which first met on 6th October 1950 at the council offices. The Chairman was Councillor John E West, with vice Chairman (Alfred) Vincent Newsome. Other members included the Mayor John Bryant Green and the Deputy Mayor Frederick Gear. The Council had the following responsibilities: 1) Organisation of a unit of County Civil Defence Division (Surrey) 2) Collection and distribution of intelligence. 3) Control and coordination at places of attack. 4) Rescue.

Already 63 volunteers had enrolled in the Corps, and were receiving basic instruction under one of three qualified council instructors. They would receive uniforms and badges when available, but only after completing 10 hours training. It was decided to use the outbuildings at Manor Farm (next to St John’s Church) for training purposes. (These

buildings built around 1855 were demolished in 1993 and are now covered by the properties in Manor Farm Close.) The council also had to organise a works and buildings emergency organisation that would be responsible for the demolition and clearance of damaged properties, and also to earmark an area of land for the disposal of debris. A site for storage of building materials also had to be found, and a storage area for furniture and belongings rescued from damaged buildings. All damage done by the enemy had to be recorded by the Borough Engineer HM Collins who was also appointed War Damage Officer. By the beginning of 1951 the officers appointed had been decided:

were asked to form a civil defence organisation It was also decided to build a local report centre, which could also be used as a control room. The building would be on council owned land in Blagdon Road, constructed as a surface shelter measuring 74 foot by 22 foot. The ideal site was the southern end of the car park close to both the main road and the council offices. The council had wanted Grade A protection for the building, but the London region that this was not warranted, and the building should only be constructed using standard protection. In January 1952, it was announced that any volunteer holding a degree in physics, chemistry, or biology will be involved in technical training for special duties involving scientific equipment. Within the Malden area, certain petrol pumps were earmarked for civil defence purposes exclusively should an emergency arise. It was also announce that Mr Albert George Eley of 2 Chatsworth Gardens was appointed as part time Civil Defence Officer starting October. The number of volunteers had risen to 104 (42 wardens, 26 Headquarters, 19 ambulance, 12 welfare, and 1 rescue with 4 stating no preference). Out of the 1000 members of the civil defence active during the war : 521 had died or moved away, 386 were now over 61 years old and not eligible for the corps, while 4 had rejoined. The remaining 89 had been written to, and a positive response had been received from 1. The metropolitan water board agreed to organise emergency water supplies in the event of mains water damage, and contractors had been contacted for demolition clearance and urgent building repairs. A telephone and extension was installed at Manor Farm, and armbands and berets with badges were provided for volunteers in the welfare section, and full uniforms for others. The armband was of yellow material with the crown over the words Civil Defence Corps. House to house calls 12

were made for volunteers, and personal letters were written by the mayor urging people to come forward under the slogan “Join with your neighbours in the Civil Defence Corps.” As can be seen, recruitment to the Corps was slow, but circumstances must have been difficult. The recruits were unpaid volunteers, they were non-combative, they were training for an event that none of them had experienced, and hoped they never would. But they were prepared to make the effort, hoping they would not hear the words “The Government has decided that in the present state of international tension you should be told how to protect yourselves against the dangerous effects of nuclear attack.”

Letters New Malden Post Office

Dear Jenny, Congratulations on your on-going wonderful work editing and publishing Malden’s Village Voice. The are probably few readers who appreciate the hard and often demoralising work it is to produce any publication and to continue trying to enthuse readers to remain loyal and involved and to encourage new readers – I salute you! On a more serious note, I write about the changes to New Malden Post Office and in particular the increasingly impersonal service in reference to that supplied by the self-service counters. Fortunately, recently there is through education and communication, an increasing awareness of the needs of the elderly, and some not so elderly, although there is still a long way to go. What is forgotten, by those able to instigate cost cutting measures in whatever service which suffers as a result, is that everyone who is fortunate enough to live long enough, ages, and as a result, their needs change. Throughout every hospital in the world, numerous

tools available are used to assess the needs of every human being, all essentially reaching very similar conclusions via varying routes. Although expressed in different ways, every human being has the same needs including ‘Love’ and ‘Belonging and Esteem’. To put this rather simplistically, by creating and reinforcing the feeling of loneliness, social anxiety and resultant depression occur. In order to have self esteem and self respect, people have a need to be respected. Machines deliver an impersonal service, however often we are are able to read ‘Thank you for your custom’ or similar platitudes which machines flash up. They cannot do other than to make people feel irrelevant and unimportant and certainly don’t respect people, often making them feel helpless, useless and inadequate. Self-service machines cannot be blamed for creating every feeling of isolation, low self-esteem, loneliness or social anxiety and it would be ridiculous to say they do. However, they exacerbate the feeling of helplessness and isolation amongst many people and especially in many elderly who, through no fault of their own, have diminishing social circles and contact. If one has the misfortune to need to queue for ‘personal service’ at the Post Office, watching the frustration of many customers of all ages using the selfservice machines also confirms that they do very little, if anything, to save time and reinforce that the only rationale for installing them is to save money on staff. However pleasant and helpful the person assisting customers using the machines is, they can only assist a single person at a time, leaving the other machine users to experience a host of emotions, all unwelcome! The small sub Post Office which was in Burlington Road for many years before it was closed as a result of ‘cuts’ was a shining beacon in delivering helpful, kind, caring service and I had occasion to witness time, patience and warmth being given, particularly to elderly people, on many occasions. I received a totally meaningless computer generated response to my letter when I wrote to express my concern and objection when it became known that it was to close. A quick lesson on how to be made to feel irrelevant, meaningless and certainly unimportant if ever there was one. Unfortunately, admirable though the motivation and determination which starting and obtaining signatures for a petition is, it can only ever be a bland, faceless and un-emotive expression of frustration of why action is necessary. Perhaps if more people can be made aware of the far reaching consequences of the actions of an often faceless bureaucracy, they may be encouraged to speak out and take action. Brenda Mortlock

Scout Cream Tea Saturday 5th July 2.30pm

The Dent Professor

This year will be 1st Malden Scout Group’s fourth annual Scout Cream Tea and the event is now firmly on the Malden Fortnight calendar. Starting immediately after the Grand Parade and only a couple of minutes’ walk from the Fountain roundabout, our Scout Headquarters in Tadworth Avenue and its large garden will be transformed into a ‘pop-up’ café. Last year our Cubs, Scouts and their helpful parents served more than 200 cream teas with homemade scones, jam and clotted cream to New Malden families over the afternoon. This year we’ll have entertainment from a local ukulele group and the Kingston & Malden Scout and Guide band will entertain us again. We’ll also have a mini market place in the garden where local stallholders sell crafts, cards and gifts. There’s even an inflatable obstacle course to keep the children busy. We hope you’ll be able to join us.

Fun, fun FUNday!!!!

This burst of beautiful, sunny weather has made me feel that Summer is on its way and plans are beginning to take shape for the annual Funday Sunday in Beverley Park, in aid of the Lunchbowl Network. This year’s event takes place from 12-4pm on Sunday 6th July (the day after the Carnival parade). Once again, there will be races for the whole family, the annual welly throwing trophy to be decided and plans for other highland games to be contested. The Malden Centre generously sponsor the trophies and medals provided by Toms Trophies. As well as the sporting activities, there will be a delicious range of food and drink available. This year we are thrilled to confirm that Korea Foods will once again be serving up some delicious fayre. Last year, the aroma of their various dishes cooked fresh in the park tempted many to join us and Korea Foods sold out and were hugely generous in donating their entire £400 profits to Lunchbowl. Why not come and try some for lunch and see the community mayhem taking place?!

As well as Korean food, there will be a Barbeque , candy floss and other sweet treats, tea and cake, watermelon slices and the ever popular pimms and beer tent! If watching rather than taking part is more your thing, why not bring your picnic rug or chair to the park get yourself some lunch and a drink and settle down to watch either the live local action or the Wimbledon men’s tennis final on the big screen. Last year, when all the races had finished, there was still a big crowd gathered by the big screen to see Andy Murray lift the trophy. So much more fun because we were all together! All profits from Funday, sporting and gastronomic, go to the Lunchbowl Network. This is a locally based charity which raises money to feed and care for 450 orphans living in extreme poverty in the Kibera Slum, Nairobi. With the incredible generosity of the people of New Malden, The charity has fostered all the homeless orphans, sends them all to school and makes sure they receive two nutritious meals a day, a far cry from the rubbish pile they scavanged for food when the charity began in 2006. We have also opened our first Lunchbowl Kindergarten for the endangered under 5’s and send our threatened teenage girls out of

the slum to a safe boarding school where they get opportunities to safety and education they could not have dreamt of. Its certainly not luxurious by our standards but its a far cry from the conditions of a living hell experienced in the Slum. Lunchbowl has no paid staff either in the UK or Kenya and so many incredible local sponsors donate to Funday that profits are maximised and every £1 raised feeds 3 children. Barclays Bank are once again match funding the event which last year raised over £6500! We are praying for a beautiful sunny Sunday, do come and join us and enter into the community spirit whilst doing an amazing thing to help children who have so little. Thank you New Malden!! 1 To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and using your fingertips rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in half the ground almonds and half the sugar. 2 Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and water. Stir with a round-bladed knife to form a crumbly dough (add a little extra cold water if the mix is too dry). Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead gently until just smooth. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 40 minutes. 3 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough circle about 30cm in diameter. Transfer to the baking sheet. 4 Sprinkle the rest of the ground almonds in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a 7cm border. Arrange the peach slices on top of the almonds. Fold the pastry border inwards – just over the edges of the peach slices. 5 Brush the pastry edge with beaten egg and sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden. .

investment in local businesses. This disappeared primarily because the dominant London Stock Exchange saw them as local costs to support and their small volume of trading couldn’t justify their costs. That of course was to thus ignore the primary purpose of a stock market which is not to trade shares but rather to act as the most cost efficient method of raising capital for local businesses. Everything else is secondary,

Only four years ago we all felt the demolition ball crash into much of the UK banking sector as banks collapsed and failed. Then we all saw the tawdry sight of those senior banking executives squirming in front of cameras or investigative including trading. committees as they had to try and explain away both Because many of these local businesses were smaller the unjustifiable and the undeniable to the drooling companies, as would be very logical, the trading in their media and populist politicians who relished the sight of shares was hardly going to be frenetic. At least there were some traders and in fact are the very opposite: most private senior banking executives, albeit very few, who had shares holders tend to be longer term investors and the courage to stand up and take the abuse, and even holding periods of five to seven years were much more one or two (well one actually) who fully apologised for likely to be the norm. This is already starting and the proposed launch in September of the Alternative Business Funding Platform in Bristol which will bring together many of the alternatives that businesses might consider from crowdfunding, peer to peer lending and pension led funding. In effect this will create a mechanism for local investors to invest in local businesses in a variety of ways, via debt or equity, and in many respects almost reinvent the old Bristol stock market. Clubs

Malden Wanderers

The cream of Malden Wanderers’ teen cricketing talent strut their stuff in an exciting competition next month. The inaugural ECB T20 U19 Cup will see Malden Rangers – formed from the club’s most promising 1518 year-olds – take on Esher Eagles on Friday 11 July and Sunbury Chieftains on Wednesday 16 July. The Cambridge Crescent ground will be transformed on both nights as the kids take over to host their own event. Besides points for victory, each club will receive a rating for their ‘matchday experience’ as they strive to replicate the razzmatazz that has madeT20 cricket such a hit. Joe Lavender, 16, skipper of Malden Rangers, is thrilled at the chance to show what he and his teammates can do. “It’s been good to have this responsibility – and it’s a chance to let people really know we’re here. Hopefully it’ll attract new people to cricket,” he says. “We’ve designed our own kit, and we’re planning music to accompany the action. If we get plenty of

local support along, it should be great fun.” If Joe and his team win their group they face a regional semi-final and final before testing their skills against the best from Yorkshire, Durham and Kent respectively, the three other counties chosen for the pilot scheme, in a Finals Day at Leicestershire CCC on 1 September. The fun starts on both evenings from 5.30, with other attractions including the chance to test your pace against a bowling speed gun, Beat the Goalie, plus a raffle for England –India Test tickets at The Oval. There will also be 300 tickets to give away for a Surrey Royal London Cup one-day match this summer. Entrance is free, with refreshments and licensed bar.

n Events Get in the swim Sunday 6th July

Olympic athletes “splash out” on a day-trip to New Malden – and get local kids to dive in too!

en

On Sunday July 6 three of the UK’s top aquatic sportsmen and women will be coming to New Malden to host a unique morning of water-based activities, exclusively for local young people aged 7- 14. In partnership with the leading swimwear brand, Zoggs, The Malden Centre is proud to welcome three Olympic and Commonwealth athletes to this exciting, free event, right on our doorstep; Adam Whitehead (European and Commonwealth Swimming Champion); Vicki Lucas (2012 Olympic Synchronised swimmer) and Fran Leighton pictured (Captain of GB Women’s 2012 Olympic Water Polo team) will each spend the morning demonstrating and instructing in a range of aquatic skills, whilst encouraging all 150

participants to ‘have a go’ and rotate around the ‘swim stations’. As well as having the opportunity to meet these three successful athletes and to learn from their invaluable experience, each participant will be able to have their photo taken and request an autograph! The event will conclude with a fun “Race the Olympian” and – unlike the ‘real’ Olympics – every participant will go home with a medal! Jon Holmes, General Manager of The Malden Centre says; “We were delighted when we were first approached by the team at Zoggs and invited to host one of their nationwide “Oceans of Fun Days” and, of course, we jumped at the chance to welcome such inspiring athletes to the Malden Centre. Not only is this going to be a really fun day, which underlines my team’s passion for introducing swimming and aquatic sports to children and young teenagers in the area, but it also brings a once in a lifetime opportunity to swim against an Olympian, right here in New Malden!” If you don't want to miss out on this amazing opportunity then please contact the Malden Centre (Josmall@pfpleisure.org or 020 8336 7782) for any last minute availability, your child must be able to swim 25m unassisted and be between 7-14years.

Have you an interest in Houses? Do you live in New Malden? We are looking for a mature, confident, outgoing, friendly individual with a full driving license to join our team at the weekends If this is of interest to you please contact Niki McGibbon on 020 8949 0094 or niki@grovesresidential.com

History

Maldens and Coombe Great War Fallen

As you no doubt know the First World War began 100 years ago on 28th July 1914. This article written by Graeme Hodge is about three of the soldiers commemorated on our War Memorial who died in the conflict. Graeme is currently researching all the names of the Great War fallen on the War Memorial and would welcome readers to contact him with any information that they might have. ghodge@nescot.ac.uk William Thomas Prismall a native of New Malden was born in 1887. He was the eldest son of Thomas W. and Caroline Prismall. After receiving his education at Christ Church Boys’ School, Elm Road, William was employed as a grocer’s assistant at Messrs. Wood and Hill, Malden Road, subsequently becoming a temporary postman at the New Malden Post Office. He enlisted at Kingston-upon-Thames and entered the Army on November 6, 1916, joining the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment), before being posted to to Lowestoft, Suffolk for training. On Christmas Eve, 1916, William married Beatrice Maggs at Christ Church, New Malden. In the Summer of 1917, he proceeded to France arriving there on the 16th July where he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Queen’s. After less that three months at the Front Line, Private William Thomas aged 30, was brought in to the 37th Casualty Clearing Station very badly wounded. The Sister-in-charge, in a letter to his widow, wrote that her husband was in a very collapsed state, did not speak and passed away quietly on the 6th October 1917. Private Thomas is buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery close to the Belgian border, about 16 kilometres south-west of Ieper (Ypres), and rests besides 900 of his British and Commonwealth comrades.

44

Alfred Henry, the only other son of Mr. and Mrs. Prismall, of 56, Cleveland Road, also served his King and Country. Alfred was wounded on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme whilst with the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment. Happily he recovered and survived the War. Another old boy of Christ Church Boys’ School, Elm Road, to make the supreme sacrifice was Albert William King, son of Mr.George. and Mrs. Emma King of Coombe Warren Farm. Albert was born at Coombe in 1896 and was one of twelve siblings. After leaving school, he was employed like his father, as a gardener’s labourer. Albert’s joined the Army Service Corps at Grove Park on the 18th January, 1915 before proceeding to Hungerford for training. His Army Service Papers show that Albert although just 5ft 4 ½ inches in height and

weighing 133 lbs, his overall physical development was classed as ‘good’. His pre-war occupation was that of a motor vehicle driver and it was no surprise therfore, that he was posted to a Motor Transport section. Albert was sent to France on the 25th July 1915 travelling across the Channel on the ‘Duchess of Argyle’and disembarking at Rouen the following day. On the 15th August, he was assigned to the 317 Auxiliary Company Army Service Corps. He was to serve on the Western Front for over three years before before succumbing to shell wounds received during an German aircraft attack. A Major Bancroft, writing to deceased’s mother, stated that that on October 8th Albert was driving his lorry, containing a large convoy of troops, to a forward area, when they were attacked by enemy aircraft. Although taken to the 58th Casualty Clearing Station, her son was so badly wounded that he died the following day the 9th October 1918. “Your son was truly one of my best men, and I felt that I could always rely on him and trust him to do his duty, and in this he never failed once. We all feel his loss very much, as he was so popular with everyone ... He was buried at La Baraque, a small village about six miles north of St. Quentin.” Albert was 23 years of age. His grave can be found at Tincourt New British Cemetery in the Somme Region of France. Many of those listed on our war memorial are not natives of the district. One of these is William Bell McArthur. William the second son of Mr. John and Mrs. Jeannie McArthur was born in Renfrew, Scotland in 1893. The family moved to New Malden in the 1900s and made their home at ‘Danebury’, Montem Road. William received his early education at the Elm Road Schools, subsequently proceeding to Tiffin Boys’ School. William McArthur enlisted into the 1st/14th Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish) on the outbreak of war and proceeded to France on the 8th March 1915. He took part in a number of battles including that at Loos, where he was promoted in the field to a commission, being posted to the Royal Scots Fusiliers on 6th November 1915. According to the Surrey Comet although experiencing many very narrow escapes, Second Lieutenant McArthur came through all these early engagements unscathed. On one occasion when with the London Scottish a bullet struck his garter, which was wound several times round his leg, cutting each fold but leaving him unscathed. On another occasion a shot penetrated his pack. William Bell McArthur was awarded the Military Cross

for conspicuous gallantry on 27th March 1916 at the Battle of St. Eloi. He was presented with the ribbon by a Divisional Commander at a special parade. The Surrey Comet noted that “The honour earned by the gallant young officer is also an honour to New Malden, Lieutenant McArthur being the first from this particular district to receive such distinction”. William’s luck finally ran out whilst serving with the 1st Royal Scots at the Battle of Arras in the Spring of 1917. The 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers were in reserve, and had to endure heavy shelling in the assembly trenches. Their susbequent advances were held up by machine-gun fire and ultimately failed. According to the Battalion’s official history the casualties that day were mostly from artillery fire. Among the dead that Easter Monday April 9th was Second Lieutenant William B. McArthur. Community Farmer’s Market

Fairy magic at the market!….. Well, the 7th June Market started a tad ‘damp’ around the edges… But in true market fashion, the intrepid ‘Shenaz’ from’ Lake Thomas Cakes’ soldiered on regardless... ’Hurrah’, I hear you say! Yes, scrummy cake, some umptious icing and a generous sprinkling of fairy dust was all that was needed to magic those clouds away as Lake Thomas Cakes completed a truly professional Fairy Cake Icing demonstration, enjoyed by all in the glorious sunshine. sales@ltcakes.co.uk Carnival comes to New Malden early…. Stall holders dressed up in style this month, in support of this years Malden Fortnight Carnival Theme, whilst ‘Tim Tomkins’ serenaded us all

with songs of days gone by. Thank you very much to Tinkerbelle, Jack Sparrow, Tim Tomkins and of course…Orinoccho!

Gardening

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

48

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Mussel & Potato Chowder

I This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes 1kg fresh mussels 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 100ml white wine 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube 200ml crème fraiche 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve

1 First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside. 2 Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute 3 Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4 Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed. 5 Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and garnish with the rest of the parsley and more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread. TIP For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

The Better Life The Joy of Camping by Derek Thompson

We Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers, “Ecofriendly.” However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. If the doctor were a sadist, that is. First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything – or given up the ghost and bought replacements – you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (it sounds much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs. After that, with a clear conscience and green-tinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness. Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one.

What could be more relaxing than the peaceful sounds of the countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring, hayfever and other noises is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Sometimes, when you tuck into your farmmade yogurt, seated on recycled wooden pallet benches, you can even catch harmonies. Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly. The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening,

turning your camping fleece into a water-retaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come. Making tea on an incline is like participating in a health and safety film. The groundsheet, thankfully, is waterproof, though not, alas, melt-proof. Still, it’s all part of living among the elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. Not the birds though – they’re too canny for that. And besides, it’s much more fun to use your tent canvas for target practice! The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle stings – are there any other kind? – effortlessly blend and before you’re ready the last day arrives. The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way; the tent wrestled back into its bag and the postcards you forgot to send are posted on the way out. These are mostly to people you’ll be telephoning when you get home. Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year? Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed?

A Malden Man Malden Fortnight by Raj Randhawa

The annual celebration of New Malden - Malden Fortnight is fast approaching. It’s invariably a happy, sunny celebration of all things local where masses of Maldeners turns out to get involved, whether it’s as part of the Grand Parade procession or just going for a stroll along the stalls that line the High St for a cup cake or a nick-nack. My personal experience of the Malden fortnight started before I actually moved to the area. Eight years ago, my wife and I were living in Clapham and we were expecting our first child. We were looking to move to an area outside of London and on a hot summers day, we drove down the A3 to New Malden to view a few houses. Having never been to the area before, we

found ourselves walking up and down the High St looking for a quick snack in between our house viewings. The area was packed with stalls lining the shop fronts and we had a great time buying up bits and bobs and trying out some local Korean food, which we had never tasted before. The atmosphere was so pleasant and welcoming that I can’t help feeling that it was one of the reasons we moved to the area. (We also thought New Malden must have been like that every weekend!). The next Malden fortnight which kicks off in a few weeks, marks our 8th year in the area as a family. Summer is always a busy period with

Teen Malden Summer of Sport

by Diaz Gillard-Brockhouse 2014 is offering us a great summer of sport, with Wimbledon, the British Athletics championships and of course the Football World Cup all taking place throughout June and July. These periods of exciting sport are often the times when people are inspired to try out a new sporting activity, and luckily for us, living in New Malden, we have a wide range to choose from. With multiple large parks, two gyms, a pool and plenty of open space to enjoy, New Malden is certainly a great place to kick off your very own summer of sport. I think that without the sports facilities in New Malden, I, as a teenager, would not be as encouraged to take part in sports as I am. Firstly, I make great use of the wide, quiet roads of New Malden by regularly jogging. I know the stereotypical teenager is a lazy, junk-food eating, TV-watching oaf, but I can safely say that all of my friends are not like that; nearly my entire friendship group likes to jog. I think this would not be the case, however, if we did not live in New Malden. Because the roads are not incredibly busy – which is quite rare for an urban area – it is easy for us to get the exercise we need as growing teens without the threat of being in a road accident. I know that my mum feels confident to let me out in the evening alone in the summer months, without having to worry about road safety. New Malden is helping us all to train for those British Athletic championships! Also, I feel that the parks in New Malden like Beverly, Blagdon – and further out Richmond Park, are all helping us to release our inner Wayne Rooney or Bradley Wiggins. With world cup spirit being in abundance, it is no surprise that I have seen tons of people taking advantage of the lovely weather and big green spaces to have a game of Football, which sometimes does seem as tense as the England versus Italy game was! We are incredibly lucky to have these parks, because in a big city such as London, green areas are defiantly a rare find. Many people from my school go to the park for picnics and even to do schoolwork outside, and I often take my little sister, who is three, to the 60

See you there, and don’t forget your maracas! play parks in New Malden. This quality time I spend with her really makes us closer, and I think the fact we can play games together in the big open space and on the swings and slide and other equipment does really help us to bond more than if we were just stuck inside, getting on each other’s nerves! In addition, the many sports clubs New Malden is home to really helps us teenagers, and adults alike, to enjoy great sport all years round. There’s the Malden Wanderers Cricket Club, the Malden Centre and Fitness4Less – just to name a few. Personally, I do trampolining. Recently I attended the Regional Finals in Exeter, Devon, and placed joint 7th in the 15-16 age group, a whole year older than my actual age! I was incredibly pleased and proud and don’t think I could have done it if we didn’t have access to great clubs like mine in New Malden. So this summer, and also in the few years to come with the Rio Olympics fast approaching, I think we should all really take advantage of what New Malden has to offer and all have our very own Summer Of Sport!
