Greetings!

Back in November I took heed of a friend’s posting on FaceBook, sharing an article from one of our national tabloids: “Winter 2014 is forecast to be “exceptionally severe” with above-average snowfall and plunging temperatures. Long-range weather forecasts warn of bitter Arctic gales leading to feet-deep snow drifts right up until February. Snow forecasts for the season suggest much of the country will be hit by heavy wintry downpours with no let up well into next year. As lovers of the white stuff ask ‘will it snow?’ this winter, the general consensus among long-range forecasters is a resounding ‘yes’: Anyway, not surprisingly my friend posted that she was off out to buy snow boots. ‘What a good idea’ thought I as my winter footwear included nothing cosy, warm or with a firm grip. And so the search started for something that ticked all boxes and a pair of very cosy (and pricey) snow boots were subsequently purchased. Well, guess what! Wellington boots have taken precedence and the expensive snow boots are still unworn in the cupboard under the stairs - but now buried under everything else that has been thrown in there since November! Despite getting soaked on a regular basis we can’t complain when we see how the rain has affected some communities. Although here we’ve certainly had some wind/roof issues, thankfully none of the cases I’ve heard of locally have resulted in any casualties. And the morale of the story? When they tell us in March what our summer will be like, take the shock-headline-advance-weather-warning with a small pinch of salt! Plans are already well underway for our great summer event – Malden Fortnight. This month sees the launch of our logo competition for children aged 11 or under. There are great cash prizes and the winning logo will be splashed all over New Malden in June and July (fantastic for any budding artist’s portfolio…) So get designing! Welcome this month two new Village Voice contributors. 14 year old Coombe Girls pupil Diaz Gillard-Brockhouse gives us her teen perspective, and Raj Randhawa has a wander down our High Street. Thanks to them and everyone else who have sent in articles this month. And also a big thank you to all the advertisers who enable us to publish each month, and to you for supporting them. If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

Jenny Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher P.S. Please remember to mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts, and get in touch by 17th March if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the April edition(s).

New Malden History Keeping it local (part 1) by Robin Gill

Growing problems

For such a small community Malden and Coombe have had a large and varied amount of publications dropping on their doormats, or available to be picked up. The Surrey Comet has been published since 1854, but it is fair to say had ignored New Malden until it started sticking up for itself by breaking away from Kingston in 1866, forming its own governing local government district, and building a new parish church (Christ Church). Such actions made the Comet sit up and take notice of this young upstart, and from then on Malden news was carried on a regular basis. Real competition for the Comet only occurred in the early 1870s, when the Surrey Advertiser, normally a Guildford based paper opened up an office in Kingston, and started reporting on local affairs. A bird you must not miss Malden produced its first paper in January 1901 with issue 1 of the Malden Magpie, heavily involved with

reporting on the social side of Malden life, it suffered from lack of advertising revenue and folded after issue 10 in October the same year. One of its claims to fame was organising a contest to find the most handsome man in New Malden. A cricketer for Malden Wanderers Archibald Alfred Graeme St George Rough came second behind the local vicar, Reverend William Allen Challacombe. Both were married men, and the result didn’t go down well with the reverend! The Malden Local Guide followed in 1903 but again lasted less than a year folding in June 1904. As the name suggests this was mainly a guide to the available businesses in Malden, and contained little local news. The Malden Times seems to have produced just one issue in March 1920, and then folded, while the Malden News was again short lived running from June 1922 to March 1923, but had the distinction of being Malden’s first weekly paper. There was a wait of five years before the Malden Gazette made a fleeting appearance from February to November 1928. The Malden and Coombe Times was produced in a small office above Ernest Elias’s newsagent at 4 Malden Road. It operated from March 1933 until the beginning of September 1939, when production was curtailed by the Second World War. The site is now occupied by St Georges Square.

Clarions and beacons After the Second World War, Malden saw the arrival of the political newspaper; with the Malden Clarion produced by the Labour Party, and the Beacon produced by the Conservatives. Local elections were now being contested by the national parties, and these publications tried to get their political views across, but this meant that local news was often sacrificed for party politics. The Kingston and Malden Boro News appeared on the streets in April 1963 and initially seemed to concentrate more on the news around Malden than its larger neighbour. This continued until August 1968 when it was combined with the Surbiton Borough News, and became simply the Kingston Borough News with its coverage spread throughout the area. The paper folded in November 1980 its place taken later by the Midweek Comet. I have ignored papers like the Informer, Guardian, Star and Times (Dimbleby), as these concentrated their news source elsewhere.

The parish pump It should be mentioned that many of the local churches have been producing monthly/ quarterly parish magazines for many years. Christ Church’s magazine dates back to at least 1895, whilst that of St John The Baptist dates back to 1891. Other organisations have also produced periodicals such as the Malden and Coombe Community Association who issued a Malden Diary monthly from 1968 to 1977 giving details of businesses, and upcoming events in the area. In December 1990 Issue 1 of The Village Way appeared. Eight pages it was produced by Owl Publications Ltd based in Acacia Grove. The second issue doubled in size to 16 pages and was delivered to 5000 homes in the Malden area. By the time of issue 4 at Easter 1991 10,000 A4 copies were being produced full of local information and lavishly illustrated in full colour. There never was an issue 5, and the Village Way went its own way.

A voice in the wilderness As you know Malden’s Village Voice has just celebrated its 100th issue. First appearing in November 2005 as The Village Voice it promised “A Fresh Look at New Malden Living Exclusively for Residents of New Malden.” 2,000 copies were edited and published by Mandy Mardell who lived in Connaught Road; the magazine was A5 size with around 44 pages and increasing to slightly larger B5 size. The local area in 2005 was in a state of flux; residents were getting use to their revamped High Street which promised to ease traffic flow, provide extra parking, and improve the appearance of the area. But all this came at a cost (£1.6 million), not to mention the loss of takings for the retailers during the necessary road works. The police station at the corner of Burlington Road finally closed its doors after 114 years as the police relocated to CI Tower. There was a new Medical Centre opened in Clarence Avenue (Groves) with capacity for 12 consulting rooms, and a new confederation was proposed involving two local schools (Coombe Girls and Beverley Boys). So, it was into this environment that the magazine

made its appearance. It is interesting to note that there are a number of advertisers who appeared in the first issue who are still advertising today, namely Fake It Tanning & Beauty, Westbury House School, Tudor Williams, Brookdale Clinic, Head Fine Foods (now The Real Butchers), Simply Floors, and Humpit. In issue one Mandy posed the question as to why New Malden was known to many locals as “The Village”. She pointed out the road sign “Market Place” which could be seen above what was then Threshers, and wondered whether that contained a clue. Elsewhere in the magazine, there were articles on Fianders, Hope & Davies, IL Chicco, and Heads Butchers. A guide to the local parks, recipes, what’s on, and a health page were also included. The question regarding the origins of “The Village” was answered in issue two by contributions from Mr Keedwell, Mr Fitzsimmonds, Ms Matts, and Mr Kelley. The consensus of opinion was that, early in its history most shops were built around the station, so people living in the residential properties went “up to the village” for their shopping. Contributions included Thomas Mays on the history of the local Royal British Legion, and Bryan Adams on a community problem.

There was also an interview with a local resident Julie T Wallace a former pupil at Corpus Christi and a successful film and television actor. Issue three asked more questions such as why are some of the roads named after trees. I was told that when the roads were originally laid out they were planted with different types of trees along their lengths (Chestnut Grove with Chestnuts etc). Certainly, old maps of the area show trees along the roads, but doesn’t show which types. I have seen old postcards of the area, but am not a dendrologist, so I wouldn’t know an acacia from a poplar, but I’m pretty certain there were a row of conker trees in Chestnut Grove. Another question asked was, when did Malden became Old Malden? Mr Kelley suggested it was around the time of the new Borough Of Kingston Upon Thames in the 1960s, but it was so called one hundred years previous, to distinguish it from its younger neighbour. Issue four celebrated that Malden Wanderers had been granted planning permission to rebuild their clubhouse which was eighty years old. It was subsequently decided, that renovation was the best policy, and three years later a new kitchen, changing rooms and toilets were completed. A new idea was tried with the “Villagers Shout” which allowed contributors to ask questions which anyone could respond to. There was also a piece written by the late

John Snowden telling the story of Malden’s two VC recipients, and rightly criticising the fact that 24 wreaths recently laid at the war memorial, had been burnt by vandals. The last issue I want to mention (this time around) was number five dated March 2006. This included a very long piece written by a Mary Marshall about her life growing up in New Malden. She now lives in North-East Hampshire, but was married as Mary Newman on Easter Sunday 1960.The family home was in Penrith Road before being bombed out, and moving to 129 Blagdon Road. She talked about the incendiary bombs and doodle-bugs, life at school (Burlington), and travelling on the trolley bus from the Fountain, but I found another part of her recollections just as interesting when she talked about the off-licence in Cambridge Road which had a model elephant outside that used to wave its trunk. Does anybody else remember this? Mary talked with great affection about her time in New Malden, and it seems she is not alone with her found memories. Yes, we all have our grumbles, but when you look at the problems elsewhere in England with the floods and storm damage, we are quite lucky to live where we do, close to “The Village”.

Malden Fortnight 2014 from 6th July

Do you remember last summer, or have your memories been washed out by the recent )and frequent) downpours? Well, I remember, and it was FANTASTIC!!! Not unaided, I hasten to add, by absolutely spectaculour weather. We had dry weather from the beginning until the end and, surprisingly, certain events suffered because it was just TOO hot - famously the annual dog show which was cancelled for concerns over animal safety. Big Band night was also down on attendance as was

ASTE DISPOSERS LTD.

the Presentation Evening. But what a relief to not be constanly worrying about ‘what happens it it rains..’ So, we’ve started planning 2014, but will need to take the weather as it comes. This year’s theme is “Carnival” and for the parade on Saturday 5th July we are seeking one or two steel bands preferably comprising of young musicians to either walk in the parade or to be transported along the High Street on a flat bed vehicle. The Malden Fortnight Committee would be grateful if any person or group that wishes to join in the festivities would contact Tony on 020 8942 0434 or email wag36@btinternet.com So, get the dates in your diary, let us know if you want to organise an event. And, if you have spare time and want to get involved in organising this wonderful community fortnight - well, don’t be shy! Finally, if you or someone you know (aged 11 and under) fancy winning £50, plus £75 for your Primary School, then why not enter our competition to design the Malden Fortnight logo for 2014? Grow-Your-Own Fitness Evening Classes Kingston Environment Centre

The health benefits of growing your own fruit and veg are well known, but how to get started? New Malden resident John Palmer, who trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and who has 40 years horticultural experience, is running a programme of evening classes at the Kingston Environment Centre, in its new home opposite The Fountain, on Monday evenings from March 24th.

Grow-your-own fitness is an innovative scheme combining practical tutorials for successful fruit and vegetable growing with personal fitness guidance to make gardening productive and rewarding. John says “I know many people who are keen to start growing their own fruit and vegetables in the garden but really need practical guidance and the initial impetus to start. All too often people are put off gardening because of unfortunate experiences in the past, maybe they’ve found the work too hard, lost motivation, or they might have injured themselves for example”. John has developed his programme over many years of experience and study of all the jobs required for successful food production on a domestic scale, in gardens and on allotment plots. Over the years he has tried and tested a range of crops to get good results even for beginners on their first go. “There are a great many different jobs to do, techniques to master and the time of year is often crucial, not to mention a bewildering array of varieties of fruit and veg, so although there are lots of books and websites out there offering advice people still find it a bit of a minefield, especially when they are starting out”.

The Kingston Environment Centre have the facilities for evening classes to run effectively with indoor and outdoor study and activity areas and a network of environmental contacts within the Borough and beyond. “If you have a garden, you can almost certainly grow food” concludes John. “It’s just a matter of knowing what to do, when and how. Over the 11 week course I’ll be giving comprehensive guidance on everything you need to do and show you how to do it in bitesized chunks so as not to become over-tired and lose motivation, and with the support and shared learning within a group there is additional peer group support.” He adds “It’s incredibly satisfying and rewarding to be eating your own crops and so much more sensible than expending energy in a gym with no tangible outcome”. To find out more have a look at the information on the Kingston Environment Centre’s website at kingstoneco. org.uk and you are welcome to call John for a chat on 07810 265 975.

We meet once a month, in the evening, when we have a guest speaker. This is followed with a chat over a cup of tea. There are lots of optional clubs and activities you can join including a book club, bridge club, lunch club, outings, weekends away, learning new skills, craft events and lots more. If you have a special interest in something then perhaps we could start another club. You may not know that the WI meets and continued to meet a real need. On a national scale the Woman’s Institute works on issues that affect us on every level. This could be education, leisure, the local community, women’s welfare, the environment or international affairs. From time to time the WI is a strong lobbying body, not bound by any political or

Most people sleep on it and pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

Clubs

A new group for vegans and friends

Starting this month, a new local group for anyone who is already vegan, thinking about it, wanting to know a bit more, interested in vegan cooking etc. The nearest existing groups I could find are in Guildford or London -a bit far for me. So I decided to create one in Worcester Park, meeting once a month. Anyone in the neighbourhood and surrounding boroughs -and others who want to travel in sometimes to be with us, is welcome. You don’t have to actually live in Worcester Park. I went vegan about 14 months ago -for compassionate and environmental reasons- and am now very enthused about vegan living! I have found my health and vitality have improved significantly, which has been an unlooked for bonus. Mainly I just enjoy the knowledge that I’ve opted out of something that has long troubled me, and the relief and peace of mind that brings me. I want to help others to do the same. The group will mainly be for socialising over food and sharing recipes and so on, a space to ask questions and discuss the ups and downs of living vegan in a world that isn’t really set up for it yet. My rather flagging interest in cooking has been revitalised with veganism. I find that I now enjoy my times in the kitchen. The challenge of creating delicious meals from vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, pulses and legumes is a bit like alchemy or some sort of art to me. The internet has a vast selection of wonderful recipes and there are also loads of books to inspire creativity. I did think, at first, that it might be hard to live vegan maybe I’d miss cheese or be stumped for what to make for dinner and that I would stop enjoying my cuppas, as I wouldn’t like the taste of plant milks. But none of this happened; I found that my concern for the animals was enough to power me through without a single regret. Shopping has become an adventure in ‘what else can I find that’s suitable?’ - as I discover ever more alternatives to what I grew up with. It’s quicker too, with so many aisles to simply miss out! So, fellow vegans, friends and enquirers, let’s meet! First meeting -Thursday 13 March 7 to 8.30 pm Christchurch with St Philip, Cheam Common Rd. Every second Thursday of each month thereafter, same time, same place. If you can’t make the first, that’s fine.

22

Come whenever you can. Regularly or occasionally, we’ll be glad to see you. We will be upstairs in the Upper Room. Bring food if possible, favourite recipes or anything else you’d like to share, but come anyway, with or without. More information from me - carol20754@googlemail. com - or Wendy Edwards 07740 082460. There is also an open facebook group - Worcester Park Vegans - where I post information regularly. View from the City Paltry pension propoganda – time for some proper pension strategy by Justin Urquhart Stewart

This year will inevitably be peppered with references to the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Some will be relevant, some maudlin and lachrymose, with others casting dire warnings of history repeating itself. I personally don’t fall into that particular school of thought, thinking rather that history provides resonances and echoes of similarity as opposed to replays of events. It seems everything about pensions is nearly always negative. Its very title appears to evoke a feeling of depression - after all when was the last time you heard someone talking enthusiastically about how well their pension has done? Generally if you have a good pension, like a well funded final salary scheme where your company isn’t going bust, you tend to

keep quiet about it. For most it is something that is years away and, after all, doesn’t really apply to them - they will rely on the lottery! Well such a state of stupidity will come back and smack everyone with that outlook. We are never going to make pensions fun, but at least we can try and make them interesting and engaging. After all it is your money and it is your future income and security. Apparently the average pension pot put aside is under £30,000 which in today’s paltry annuity rates would get you around £125 per month to live on. The problem is that few are told these raw facts or, more to the point, told in a manner and language that the man in the street would understand. Finding a simple way of telling people how much to save, and to what end, and how they are doing, is going to be vital and something which we have certainly been focussing on with the next developments of the 7IMagine App. So last week we had the usual suspects moaning that the auto enrolment pensions for the 3 million already signed up and involved so far is going to be too little, too late. Wonderful! Let’s start off by

depressing everybody. The key issue is that you get people started into long term saving, and once started, good communication can tell them what happens as they save more over time - but if you don’t get started at all, then you are doomed to a retirement in pathetic poverty and a diet of dog food. Eventually I, as a marginally benevolent dictator, would make such savings compulsory, but do so in a much more imaginative way than is currently laid out. We live in a financial world surrounded by the political detritus of pension and savings meddling which has served only to confuse most of the population. As ever, I want a strategy, not another tactical tragedy. We have ISAs (which were just the next politicians’ PEPs), then Junior ISAs, a muddle over Child trust funds and stakeholder pensions, as well as the confusion for most over annuities. What we really need is a lifetime saving scheme for all. A simple scheme into which the family can tax efficiently donate, and start the rolling up of value right from your date of birth. This then could be used as a guarantee for mortgages, education and, in due course, morph into a type of personal pension, and from there even personal and family old age care. It would be visible, simple and understandable - and of course once at a greater value provide that vital thing we all need for our finances and well being confidence! So why do I focus on baby saving? Well just look at the latest figures coming out of the Barclays Equity Gilt Study which was recently published. One figure that I always like to look at is very simplistic but tells a very straightforward tale. Namely.....if you invested £100 in a UK index of stocks in 1945 it would now be worth a not wildly interesting £9,347. However, if you took that same investment and rolled up and reinvested all those tiny little dividends over the time, the same number would radically change to a much more interesting sum: £177,620. A difference of over £150,000! So what is more important, the stock market going up and down, or the steady consistent power of compounding dividends and yield over the years? Ok, so that is over 68 years, but that is still a lot better

than the current average of £30,000 per pension, and there is a better than reasonable chance you just might have saved something slightly more than £100 over that time. So let’s have some radical thinking and reform. The conversation about the cap on pension charges is about as creative as a cap on fuel charges; it’s addressing the wrong issue. Make it a system and service that people understand and appreciate and then the demand from intelligent and educated investors will drive costs down and expose both the hidden as well as more obvious costs. So redesign, simplify, and encourage everyone to start now - and the younger the better! Fund Raising Going MAD in Tanzania! by Rachel Cooke

Hello! My name is Rachel Cook, 18, and in April I’m going on a 3 month trip to Musoma, Tanzania as part of a team of 10 with the charity Go MAD, partnered with Tearfund. Our main aim is to serve the community through getting involved in projects that will provide sustainable development to help transform lives plagued by poverty. I am looking to both raise awareness of the problems faced by these people and funds to help me make a difference to their lives. Go MAD (Go Make A Difference) is a small charity that has been working in the community of Musoma, a small town in the north of Tanzania, for 20 years. Founded in 1994 with the building of a cathedral for the Diocese of Mara, the charity has been sending out groups of volunteers from the UK to work in the community in a range of different ways ever since. Through tackling key issues like inadequate housing, nutrition and sanitation (only 12% of the population have access to a toilet), the accessibility of clean water (22 million drink dirty water), affordable healthcare and education (just over half of children aged 5 - 14 attend school) and disease prevention, the charity undertakes work that changes lives and provides more hopeful futures. The team I am in will be continuing with the charity’s long term projects as well as other smaller ones. Currently Go MAD volunteers are building a healthcare centre in Musoma with the principal aim of reducing the number of deaths in childbirth and infant mortality, since at the moment many of the locals cannot afford the bus fare to the nearest hospital. Other projects we’ll be involved in include the building of water tanks and pit latrines to provide clean water and better sanitation and even small brick houses for families; education on preventable illnesses such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid as well as administering healthcare to sufferers and the many orphans the victims leave behind, and teaching in schools and churches. How much we can do depends entirely on how much money we raise. With this in mind I’m doing a Duathlon on 23rd March at Dorney Lake (5k run, 40k cycle, 10k run): if you’d like to sponsor me please go to https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ rachelcookisgoingmadintanzania or leave a donation in the Christ Church Parish Office. Alternatively, bring your car to Christ Church, New Malden between 9.30am and 12.30am on Saturday 29th March so that I can clean it for a suggested donation of £5. All the

money raised will go directly towards the projects rather than my own costs. Money really does go a long way: £950 is enough to build a 15,000 litre water tank for a group of houses, and £1000 can build a pit latrine – both life-changing facilities. If you could contribute, it wouldn’t just be me who’d appreciate it! To follow the team’s activity throughout the trip and see where your money’s going visit http:// rachelcookisgoingmadintanzania.wordpress.com. Thank you.

Community

Malden Care Scheme

Malden Care Scheme is a thriving local charity designed to serve residents in Malden who may need a helping hand and have no-one to whom they can turn. It was formed nearly 40 years ago when local churches and the Rotary Club combined their efforts to create the service. It’s a simple scheme. Local people from the community provide time and assistance to people in need. The client phones a central number and is given the phone number of the day’s ‘Duty Officer.’ Duty officers take it in turns to stay at home one morning a month and answer their

phone to clients; they then phone one of the volunteers. A volunteer tells the duty officer if they are available. There is no compulsion for any volunteer to undertake a job if it’s not possible for them. Volunteers with cars are very popular. Over the years volunteers have undertaken a huge variety of tasks. The most requested is to be escorted to health appointments and clients have expressed real appreciation of this service. Recent compliments include: Could not be bettered. The driver always makes sure I am taken to the right department in the hospital and ensures that the staff know I am there. Being blind I am dependent upon their good will in this matter and I have only the highest praise and thanks for them. And The service could not have been better if undertaken by a private company. All credit to the volunteers who help. Will always recommend the service to others who may need help. A great service to the community. In recent years volunteers have driven a client to visit the grave of a beloved pet; visited a young man when he was admitted to Kingston hospital and had no friends or family nearby; referred someone who wanted a priest to visit them at home to the appropriate church; taken a man using a wheelchair, together with his young son, Christmas shopping; moved some light furniture round (though the client later changed their mind and wanted it back in the same position!). Although regular jobs can’t be accepted such as planned daily or weekly visits, there are always exceptions. This might include emergency help for a strictly limited period of time. For example, Malden Care undertook to drive someone who had had an accident and was temporarily incapacitated to visit her disabled child while waiting for a taxi card to be issued.

Rosemary Conley ditches the diet in major brand overhaul

After 40 years of successfully helping millions of people lose weight and get more active, Rosemary Conley CBE is unveiling an exciting new image and direction for the brand. LUCY, the local franchisee for MEW MALDEN, is thrilled with the new name and style and can’t wait to see the reaction from her members! The nationwide Clubs, which offer a fitness class as well as advice on food and slimming, and national Magazine have ditched the word diet and have rebranded to ‘Food & Fitness’- reflecting the more positive lifestyle approach. The brand has also introduced a new strapline - Fitter. Healthier. Happier. LUCY Says, “The new branding is fresh and really reflects what we do. We are at the forefront of pioneering exercise routines and healthy eating plans – and this branding says it all! We also have a brand new member’s pack available which contains fantastic

new tools to help you get fitter, healthier, happier”. Over the last decade consumer attitudes towards dieting have evolved significantly with the word ‘diet’ becoming seen as increasingly negative. There is real cynicism and low tolerance for the quick fix, yo-yo diets, and more desire for sustainable lifestyle changes – which is exactly what your local Rosemary Conley instructor can offer you. Rosemary Conley Says, “Our mission has always been to make a real and lasting difference to people’s lives, we really care about overall health, not just weight loss. The new strapline of Fitter. Healthier. Happier gets right to the heart of this. It moves away from the single-minded focus on diet and weight loss to talking more about an overall active and healthier lifestyle. LUCY runs a wide range of classes and is sure there will be one to suit you. Rosemary Conley Food & Fitness is the only national slimming organisation in the UK to include a workout as well as dietary advice in all their classes. “I welcome everyone to my classes, whether they work out often, or can’t remember the last time they put on a pair of trainers. We are here to support and encourage all levels and abilities.” Assures LUCY.

Adding breadcrumbs to the fruit mixture helps to soak up any juices and stop the pastry from becoming soggy. You can replace them with ground almonds, if liked.

on a large greased baking tray. Brush them liberally with some of the melted butter then arrange 2 more sheets on top. Brush with more butter and top with the last 2 sheets. 3 Spoon the apple mixture along one long pastry edge, leaving a 3cm border. Sprinkle over another 3 tbsp of Demerara sugar. Fold in the two short ends of the pastry then roll up loosely from one long side to enclose the filling, making sure the seal is underneath. Brush the pastry all over with any remaining melted butter and sprinkle over the rest of the Demerara sugar. 4 Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Check after 25 minutes and cover loosely with foil if the pastry begins to go too brown. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. Kids

New baby in New Malden

by Lucy Howard We’re lucky in New Malden that our local churches provide so many play opportunities for our little ones. There seems to be something every morning in one church hall or other, and the ones I’ve tried have been excellent - a wide range of toys, books, puzzles and craft, a very reasonable entry fee, and usually a nice singing session at the end. Other mums are always saying to me “Why don’t you try the X. church group? It’s really good.” And my reply? “Err...maybe. Do they do biscuits?” Not because I want to eat them myself, you understand. It’s because all the church hall playgroups I’ve been to hand out biscuits to the children halfway through the session. And my daughter happens to have a severe allergy to one of the most common ingredients in biscuits. In fact, it’s so severe that she doesn’t have to eat the biscuit herself in order to have the reaction. She just has to have skin contact with it. And if you hand out biscuits to thirty toddlers they will return to their toys with an invisible coating of biscuit-slobber over their hands and they will put the toys in their biscuity mouths and the inevitable will happen. My child ends up with a horrible rash caused by someone else’s biscuit, in a real case of not having your cake and not eating it. So there are two options: go for a short time, leaving strategically as the biscuits appear, or don’t go at all. There’s not really much we can do about it: we can’t demand that everyone else stops eating their digestives. The other children all like their biscuits; the other mothers want their children to be given a biscuit; and the people that are running the groups are doing it (I assume) on a voluntary basis, and it feels wrong to start picking holes when people are doing things out of the kindness of their hearts. (Although, if any of them are reading this, and want to switch to a different snack, I would possibly swoon with gratitude and suggest they go for rice cakes as they’re just about the only snack which doesn’t contain the common allergens of cow’s milk, egg, wheat and gluten.) So next time you’re at a playgroup and you hear someone calling “Not on that bit of carpet! There are CRUMBS there!” please bear in mind that the parent in question probably isn’t suffering from OCD; more likely, they are trying to keep their allergic child safe!

Book Review That Famous Place By Shaan Butters

The famous place in question is Kingston, the quote in full relates to “a great council aet Cyninges tun that famous place in Surrey” held around 838AD. I did not envy Shaan’s job when she was asked to update her 1995 publication “The Book Of Kingston” Whilst “only” eighteen years had elapsed, so much more information had come to light relating not just to Kingston town, but the whole Royal Borough. I only feel qualified to review those parts relating to the Maldens and Coombe but these are given equal prominence as its neighbours. Shaan relates how evidence was found detailing Prehistoric occupation of Malden (through the discovery of flint tools), the presence of Iron Age man, and later a Roman settlement. “Modern “history starts with the coming of the railway and the settlement of New Malden built

around it. The neglect of Kingston forcing the early settlers to secede, and govern themselves. This also involved the building of Christ Church and its related schools, and a successful sewerage system. Gradually, the major industry of the area changed from agricultural to clerical/ service involving many of the residents commuting to London. After the First World War, the Bypass was built improving road communication with London, enabling major companies (Venners/Decca etc) to start building factories on the nearby industrial estates. To accommodate the new workers and the increasing population, housing estates grew up built by Wates and others. The Second World War caused great suffering for the community, but also brought people closer together, and Malden was justifiably proud to have two VC recipients amongst its citizens. Post war, saw high rise building in our town centre as Malden became part of the Royal Borough Of Kingston Upon Thames. We still kept our individual identity however with such events as The Malden Fortnight, and the building of amenities such as the Malden Centre, and we welcomed the arrival of the Korean community into our town. Shaan deals with all these events in a confident and knowledgeable manner, and couples this with equally sound histories of other parts of the borough, and how they interrelated over the years. She also gives an abundance of notes and references, enabling readers to follow their own line of research if required. The book is available for £25 direct from the author Tel 020 8949 7739 email tim.everson@btinternet.com and also from outlets such as the Kingston Museum and Local History Room, and The Regency Bookshop in Surbiton. Reviewd by Robin Gill Many congratulations to the Village Voice for reaching its 100th edition! We’re very grateful for the support we’ve had from the Village Voice in our fundraising efforts and the invaluable editorials. It really has made a huge difference to our recent minibus campaign. Gardening

A touch of the Orient by Pippa Greenwood

As the new gardening year is under way, is it time to embark on a new era in your garden? It can be really refreshing to have a change of style, not necessarily in your whole garden but perhaps you could create a different and contrasting feel in a small part of your plot to the rest of your well-loved garden? The Japanese style is largely very simplistic and aims to create a relaxed, calm environment. In any garden you’re going to need walls, fences, pathways and so forth, and if you use natural materials such as wood or of course bamboo, they blend in better with the surroundings of an existing or a newly planned garden and instantly help to create that oriental feel. Provided the surface is made relatively slip-proof, a small bridge can be created quite easily using a simple plank of wood, allowing you to cross over an existing or new pond or other water feature. Stain the wood an interesting colour: perhaps even bright Japanese-style red if you’re feeling daring. Thinking of water, why not create your own ‘deer chase’? All you need to set up is a source of water powered by a pump, then allow the water to pour out from a bamboo spout and then into another hollowed out piece of bamboo. As the weight of the water increases in the hollowed out bamboo it causes it to tip and to swivel around slightly. Once filled up it then tilts downwards and pours its water into the basin or bowl beneath. When empty it clunks back into position. If you want something even simpler, then buy some wide diameter bamboo canes, hollow one out, cut the end at an angle and simply create a trickling water spout. Provided you fix everything up with a pump, the water can then be recycled around from the bowl or basin and back into the trickling pipe. Gravelled areas raked into simple patterns resembling waves or entire circles also help to create a Japanese feel. These can take up the majority of the garden space, be a relatively small area or perhaps link your existing garden into the Japanese ‘room’ that you have created. Concentric rings of raked gravel or sand look particularly dramatic if you place a sizeable, interestingly shaped boulder, stone or specimen plant in the centre of the middle circle. When it comes to plants there are several which instantly help to evoke that Japanese effect. The so-

56

called Japanese maples with their intricately divided leaves epitomise Japanese gardens and many will turn brilliant shades in the autumn. Japanese azaleas too can be used to great effect and can bring in some of those really bright colours which look so good for the relatively simple garden surrounding them. Pine trees may be too large for most gardens, but you can gradually bend the stems of a smaller one to create a bonsai effect. Of course, if you’re a collector of bonsai then most of these trees actually enjoy spending the summer outside in a garden and provided they are kept adequately maintained, will look great in your Japanese garden. A trip down to your local garden centre is bound to supply you with a few oriental-themed containers. Plant one or two of these up with a small acer, camellia, miniature azalea or miniature bamboo and you will really help to complete that oriental touch. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related items including ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ veg growing system, electronic cat and fox deterrents, lots of slug controls, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, and many other useful garden items.

Events

New Malden 5km Easter Fun Run

9am Saturday 29th March 2014 Beverley Park The annual New Malden 5km fun run will take place this year at 9am on Saturday 29th March 2014 at Beverley Park. The event is free to enter and is open to runners of all ages and abilities. Building on last year’s success of The Malden Fortnight 5km fun run, the event organisers are looking to double the number of entrants from 75 in 2013 to 150 runners in 2014. There will also be a children’s 100m ‘Easter Egg and Spoon’ race with Easter Eggs as prizes for all children who enter. The event is a great opportunity for members of the local community to do something active together in the beautiful surroundings of Beverley Park. Christ Church Primary School New Malden has set up a fundraising team called ‘A Better Build’ for the Junior School playground at the rebuilt school which is opening after Easter this year. The 5km fun run event is an opportunity to raise awareness of the new playground project, as well as hopefully raising £1,000 towards new play equipment. There will be prizes awarded for best fancy dress runners (based on an Easter theme), fastest runners in various categories, as well as prizes for those who have helped to raise money for the new playground equipment. Waitrose sponsored the event last year and there are additional sponsorship opportunities for other local businesses or individuals who would like to get involved. To enter the free event or to find out more about the A Better Build project, go to the event website at www.nmfunrun.co.uk The website also has

links to ‘Couch to 5km’ training plans and local running groups to get you started. The event was full within two weeks of being advertised last year and will be limited to the first 150 runners who sign up on the website. To avoid disappointment, register on the website as soon as possible and we look forward to seeing you at 9am on the 29th March 2014 in Beverley Park.

Recipe

Easy Lamb Rogan Dhansak

I This recipe does use fresh ingredients but ‘cheats’ a little by using a jar of sauce rather than creating it from scratch which saves time, but still produces a delicious and authentic dish. Unlike many curry type dishes, the lentils make this very thick so there’s no need for rice. It reheats perfectly and so can be cooked the day before ready to eat at short notice the next day. Serves 4 to 6 Ready in 4 hours 800g diced leg of lamb or lamb steaks 3 whole peppers, red, green, yellow, sliced. 1 chopped and diced onion 2 carrots peeled and finely diced 2 sticks of celery chopped and finely diced 2 jars of Rogan Josh sauce (recommend Loyd Grosman) Half a teacup of dried red lentils 2 – 4 whole red chillies sliced Bunch of fresh coriander Olive oil Salt and pepper For serving, naan bread and sour cream Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas Mark 2. Add a splash of olive oil to a frying pan and cook the onions, carrot and celery until they take on a bit of colour, then put these into a large casserole pot. In the same pan put about half the diced lamb and fry until sealed, then put into casserole pot, repeat with the rest of the lamb. Fry the peppers for a couple of minutes, then put them into casserole pot with a pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Add the chillies to taste – 4 chillies will give a medium heat but use fewer chillies and remove the seeds if you don’t like it too hot.

Pour in the two jars of Rogan Josh, then add a bit of water to the jars, put the lid back on and shake. Chop half the coriander and add to the pot with the liquid from the jars and stir thoroughly. You need the casserole pot filled to near the top, so add water if necessary. Don’t worry if it looks a bit watery, the lentils at the end will thicken it all up. Put into the oven, giving it a stir after about 2 hours. After 3.5 hours sprinkle over lentils and stir in. Put back into the oven for another 40 minutes. Just before serving sprinkle the rest of the fresh coriander on top and then serve with naan bread, and sour cream.

Teen Malden Decision, decisions...

by Diaz Gillard-Brockhouse As a year 9 student, the time has come for me to pick my GCSE options. This has resulted in many a sleepless night, more than one argument with my parents, and my friends at school alike, but finally I’ve reached the conclusion to take history, media and German, along with all the compulsory subjects. In order to make these choices I’ve had one vital support net - community. Firstly, my school community has had a big effect. My teachers and my friends have obviously influenced my choices a lot, in good and bad ways. I’ve had to face facts that I probably will be separated from most of my friends, as we all have different careers we want to pursue, and therefore are going to take different subjects, but finally I think I’ve come to understand that it isn’t the end of the world, and I’ll still be able to see them at breaks, lunch, and of course out of school. So in some ways, my community of friends were quite unhelpful to me in relation to choices, but now we’ve all realised that this is a big point in our lives, they’ve transformed into a real help, and we can all rely on one another for support and help at this time. In addition, teachers at my school have been a big The Clean Chimney Sweep influence. I would be lying if I said I didn’t mind which A clean chimney is a safe chimney teacher I got for my GCSE lessons, because I do mind. I think its incredibly important to enjoy the teaching you receive, and personally, I’m more likely to produce good quality work for a teacher who I build a strong relationship with. However, after many talks with other students and teachers, it’s become clear I can’t let a teacher influence my decision because there isn’t much of a chance I’ll have them for the next two years. The Better Life Green with Envy by Derek Thompson

Our Better Life has always been about cooperation. We try to work with Nature and the seasons; we swap produce and ideas with neighbours and friends. It’s never about competition...usually. “You must come and see our new place,” a friend of ours simpered. “We’re still renovating, but the garden is looking lovely.” In fairness, they’ve been renovating for months and months now and there’s no sign of the house surrendering yet. Anne was very keen to go, principally because she likes looking around other people’s houses - when they’re in, I hasten to add. The garden was, to my emerald eyes, spectacular. They had six chickens, each one a different breed and with its own pedigree, a humungous vegetable plot with three types of potato already in the ground and enough fruit trees to have made 48 litres of cider last autumn. By way of a contrast, we once harvested five sweet potatoes that wouldn’t fill a saucer and managed a mug of juice from a bag of foraged apples.

We were given a whistle-stop tour of several fruit bushes and raspberry canes, a nod to the concrete pond (rectangular) and a visit to the earthworks soon to become a solar array. They also showed us where the water butts will sit and how they plan to follow our example, by linking them to a Rainwater Hub up the wall under the main drainpipe. I was quiet on the drive home, thinking about what we could do with more space. Anne, ever the practical one, knew just how to harness my ambitions. She drew up a list of things we need to do in March for our own little eco-paradise: 1. Take up more grass, so we can extend the minimeadow to make it a midi-meadow. We’ll also need more fine sand for the 50 / 50 mix before we sow last year’s wildflower seeds and it’ll be a chance to delve into a traditional seed catalogue to diversify.

2. Spread the love by spreading the compost. Plus, this year I really want to look at doing something with seaweed. Incidentally, the ‘love’ does not extend to weeds. 3. Tend to the plants in the (world’s smallest) conservatory. I tend to think everything is pot-bound, but sometimes I am right. It’s also a good time to check the drainage and keep a watchful eye on the temperature. It may only be March but it can be pretty toasty in there on a sunny day. 4. Generally, get busy. This covers a multitude of activities - everything from checking car boot sales for new old tools to turning over the veg patch and planting out onions and beans. Naturally, we popped into a garden centre on our way home - for tea and cake. “While you were looking at their wood store,” Anne caught me daydreaming, “Stephanie told me how much they’d been inspired by our garden.” I smiled then, remembering how we’d agreed a tomato growing competition: Gardner’s Delight vs. Sweet Million - our conservatory vs. their leaky greenhouse. And I recalled those words of Robert Louis Stevenson: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” Mainly, it had to be said, because it was written in the seed catalogue. A Malden Man Back to the High Street by Raj Randhawa

I hurt my back last week. It didn’t come as a surprise. My back problems became more frequent around the time I gave up playing squash and football. Violent injuries queued up to assault me every time I picked up my racket or kicked a ball. I was 38 when I stopped playing sports. I guess that’s better than most professional footballers, but I was no professional. It took some time for my mind to catch up with my body. Up until then, it flatly refused to entertain that my limbs and muscles just couldn’t take it anymore. Soon after that, swimming became the order of the day.

Anyway, back to the back. It happened at my children’s Little Kickers class in Raynes Park, sitting on those long, low school benches. At the end of the hour-long session, I reached out to pick up my childrens’ jackets and my back just gave way. The feeling of dread was instant, as I knew the discomfort

that awaited me over the next few weeks. The only thing that kept me from swearing obscenities at the top of my lungs, were the 20 odd 5-6 year olds around me. I managed to get my children home in one piece and then quickly set about feeling sorry for myself. I’d been working from home quite a bit recently and the back problem ensured I continued doing so. It’s inadvisable to sit for long periods with a bad back, so after a few days of working from home- stuck to my desk, I decided to get out of the house with my laptop and take a walk around New Malden. As I hobbled on to the High St with the backpacked laptop straining my back, I decided to treat myself to ‘lunch time’, which is rare. I have a passion for books, so I headed straight for the FARA charity shop for the start of an impromptu book treasure hunt. Standing in front of the shelves, I tilted my head right to follow the book titles. I could spend hours doing just that, but I had to consider the chance of an unwelcome pulled neck muscle in addition to my pain in the … back. Disappointingly I found nothing of interest, but remaining optimistic, I moved further along the High St to the Oxfam shop. For me, the pleasure of the search derives from that unexpected find; that book you’ve wanted to buy, or perhaps a new find; a title that catches your eye - the way a font sits upon the

spine or the revelatory words on the back cover. As I followed the books left to right, right to left, there it was. It wasn’t one that I had heard of, but the title captured my interest- ‘Death & The Penguin’ by Andrey Kurkov. I read the back “A brilliant satirical take on life…” and “A tragi-comic masterpiece”. £1.25p! Absolute bargain. I rushed over to the cashier and thrust my money at her in case something happened that would stop me from buying the book; a fire alarm, an earthquake, perhaps an Andrey Kurkov fanatic, ready to fight me for the book? My next stop was The Princess Alice Hospice charity shop, followed by Barnardo’s, and the British Heart Foundation. After a disappointingly barren spell, I arrived at the Cancer Research shop. The book section wasn’t massive but it had always managed to throw up something special on previous visits. After some head swiveling action, I found a Jim Dodge book - one of my favourite authors. Earlier in the year, I had read Stone Junction, Not Fade Away and Fup, in a fevered two weeks where it seemed my life depended on reading them back-to-back. I had just found the only book of his that I don’t own- ‘Rain On The River’. The

ecstasy borne of an unexpected bounty took a hold of me. £1. Unbelievable! The additional unwelcome weight on my back was balanced out by a sense of (literary foraging) achievement. I bounced down the road (well… shuffled slowly) and made my way to The Glasshouse, my wonderful local. It was mostly empty. I ordered a flat white (which incidentally was a superb coffee) and settled down to do some work, which I did with an added zeal I attributed to my literary haul and the mellow surroundings and tunes being played by the staff. After a couple of hours, my stiffening back prodded me to get up and walk. I made my way back up the High St, stopped off to do some more work and a quick Korean lunch at Stellar’s restaurant, before heading home having experienced a little more of New Malden. I sometimes forget how much New Malden has to offer. All we have to do is get out there -pop in to a second hand shop and seek out that elusive treasure; drop into a Korean restaurant and be transported to Korea in an instant; pop in anywhere. Just keep your eyes and ears peeled. Be open. Enjoy.
