Greetings!
Two things I usually try to avoid at all costs. Being cold, and getting wet (unless in a very hot country.) I am partial to my home comforts and thermostat control. When I made the big move from Glasgow to London 13 years ago it was on the conditions that Brian installed both ITV digital (so I could watch Ally McBeal) and some form of actual heating. So why on earth would I actually pay to spend holiday time potentially cold and damp in a tent? I was brought up enjoying holidays under canvas. I would sit in the car reading whilst the rest of the family put the tent up in the pouring rain. Ok, so it didn’t always rain but enough to be memorable. In my 20s I had a very different experience of the great outdoors. Travelling in Southern Africa. 20,000km in 11 weeks. Before dusk fell we’d pull over into the bush, pitch the tent, light a fire and cook in an iron 3 legged pot. And I loved it. Even the threat of danger from ‘the wildlife’ just added to the excitement. We started camping as a family 7 years ago and our experiences here in the UK have been varied... Who can forget August 08 when we, and pretty much the rest of our campsite (and Devon), jumped ship only 3 days into the holiday with a mass exodus back to London… our first trip. We’d been lulled into a false sense of security by beautiful weather. And our last long weekend in the great ourdoors also came to an abrupt end. You’ll probably by now be now thinking I am a complete wimp but seriously, the field was a mudbath and absolutely everything was filthy – especially the children. We did stick it out for 2 nights , unlike one family (you know who you are...) in our party who drove from New Malden to West Wittering each day to visit us, then go home to get dry each night. Day trippers! Now it ‘s officially summer, the camping season is again upon us. Fingers crossed everybody for sunshine but it goes without saying that whatever the weather it’s guaranteed that the children will have an amazing time. And happy kids... that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it! Anyway, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

Barefoot Runner completes Virgin Money London Marathon 2014 New Malden resident Luke Jones (30) set himself the challenge of running all 26.2 miles of the London Marathon without shoes for WWF UK, and made it over the finish line in an impressive 4 hours 27 minutes last Sunday!
Luke started his shoeless training last May, building up his long distance running on local roads and through coarse woodland to toughen up the soles of his feet and develop his calf and hamstring muscles to aid running on the balls of his feet. You may have seen him pounding our pavements during his training? “The main thing I’ve experienced training is that people think you are a nuts and look at you like your crazy – people shout out the window, telling me I don’t have shoes on, which I am obviously quite aware of!! The worst thing for me would be landing on glass or metal, when you run barefoot you have to look about 3 or 4 foot ahead, which is quite tiring mentally, to search the floor. I even run in Richmond Park around the summer, through the forest through the trees on sharp small sticks, it was quite painful, but I did that intentionally to toughen up. “ The training paid off as Luke was able to sustain a good pace through-out the run, with hundreds of runners on the route congratulating him, as well supporters lining the route. ‘Throughout the run the crowd were shouting; ‘ go barefoot man, go barefoot man’ and people running near me kept on patting me on the back, it was overwhelming how hundreds of people just kept egging me on, the general effort of the crowd , with a constant stream of yelling was quite extreme’. The second half of the run was notably harder for him, which he said was due to the difference in road
6
surfaces around the east end of London, as well as problems caused by standing on discarded gel energy drinks. ‘With the gels that were thrown on the floor I found that stepping in the sticky substance would mean I would then end up with small stones stuck to my feet, which were really painful , as they were sharp and would dig in. I had to get quite nifty at dodging these and was pretty relieved to come across the water spray areas to get my feet hosed down!’ Spotting his wife in the crowd half way, seeing the WWF UK cheer point at mile 23 and then crossing the finish were the highlights for him during a painful challenge. After reading a book on the benefits of barefoot running, Luke decided to commit
to the London Marathon, pairing this up with his long standing enthusiasm for the environment by running for WWF-UK. Luke hopes his fundraising efforts will go towards supporting the rainforest fund to protect a billion trees and has so far raised over a thousand pounds towards his fundraising target. Thousands of pounds have been raised by the 125 people who took part in Sundays’ London Marathon as part of Team Panda on behalf of WWF UK. If you’d still like to sponsor Luke please use his Justgiving webpage; www.justgiving.com/ LukeJones2014 For more information on taking part in other Team Panda fundraising events go to: www.wwf.org.uk

home when he was 19, and travelled to America on a windjammer. Whilst overseas, he learnt the art of sign writing, a talent he brought back to Malden on his return a few years later. As well as sign writing, he became the village lamplighter during the First World War, and supervised the local blackout precautions, as raids by Zeppelins were a real possibility. He also painted the red white and blue roundels on the early Sopwith planes for the RFC at Kingston. Additionally, he was a member of the little known Home Defence Force (First World War pre runner of the Home Guard in WW2). Sydney, a member of the Baptist Church in New Malden had celebrated his golden wedding two years previously, sadly his wife Adeline died later in 1954 leaving five children, twelve grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Malden also lost one of its most respected doctors with the passing of Dr Tom Morgan of Roselawn (junction of Malden and Presburg Roads) aged 53.He had been a GP in New Malden for 20 years. Always looking after his patients best interests, he became counsellor and friend to many locals. He was also Chairman of the Medical Board at the Kingston Victoria Hospital for 11 years, a member of Malden Rotary Club, and had served in the ARP locally during the Second World War, and was one of the first medical officers to be called into action as a result of enemy attacks. His
memorial service held at Christ Church was widely attended from across the community. Medical matters The Kingston Victoria Hospital (mentioned above) had been closed in 1951 and turned into a gynaecological unit, but a new foundation was formed locally, and a national appeal launched. This raised over £11,000 enabling in 1954, the purchase of Coombe Manor a large house on Coombe Lane West, to be converted into a 20 bed hospital (New Victoria). Also on the medical side, after the children from Roselands (Kingston Road) had been relocated the previous year, the site was converted into a nurses’ home, health clinic, and ambulance base. Capable of housing 16 vehicles including 10 ambulances it replaced the station at Kingston hospital, and cost about £50,000. The clinic including a consulting room, an infant welfare area, health visitor’s room, waiting room and kitchen. Staffed by a full time medical officer, and five health visitors. Other rooms contained clinics for dental, ophthalmic, and speech therapy, mainly for children. The nurses’ accommodation covered a midwife, two district nurses, three district nursemaids, and a trainee mid wife.

Building works Another building arising from a previous incarnation was the Baptist Church in Kingston Road. The original building had been almost completely destroyed in the air raid on 16th August 1940. The new building which was opened by George Woollacott on 30th March, took 15 months to build, and cost £25,000. Malden was still in a state of redevelopment after the war, and since the conflict the council had built over 700 permanent properties (as opposed to prefabs) whilst private builders had erected 180. The private builders had also rebuilt nearly 550 war destroyed, or uninhabitable houses. New houses included the flats (124) in Sheephouse Way, and Newhouse Farm. Work was also promised to start on the roundabout at the Fountain. We know with hindsight that the building of the roundabout did not start until the end of April 1955 due to delays between the Borough and County Councils. Additionally, the recommendation for a new library in Old Malden at the junction of Church Road and Avondale Avenue was sent to the County
10
Council. Again with hindsight, we know this fine building was not opened until November 1956. But, there was a constant need for new houses, and the council caused controversy when it announced the compulsory purchase of land in the South Lane and Grayham Road area, which included part of the back gardens of many properties (this became Newborough Green in the 1960s). Access to the site would be through Mr Patience’s scrap yard at 42 South Lane which would be demolished. Even members of the council’s own party were against the scheme described as being in contradiction to the freedom of the individual. Whist the gardens were very long, they had been established for some time, and some had been planted as orchards, or used for the raising of poultry.

Spending a penny to save £300 Another subject which seemed to occupy more than its fair share of time at council meetings was the subject of public conveniences (or the lack of them). Members met on a bitterly cold night in January to decide whether to part rent the toilets at The Fountain Hotel. Part rent meaning that they would pay to have the toilets open outside normal opening hours (11am2pm and 5pm -10pm). Costs seemed rather high at £65 for gates, plus an annual maintenance charge of £235. The use of the toilets at the Fountain would only be a temporary measure, and they would still be available to drinkers in the pub. The pennies in the slot would still go to the brewery, as new locks would cost £14 each, which the council thought was an unnecessary expense. Proposals to close off the junctions of South Lane and the by-pass were met with criticism. It should be remembered that before the coming of the A3, South Lane stretched unbroken across the countryside. But in 1954, the junction was regarded as a death trap with cars turning right and left onto the main road.

The chief objection to the closing of the crossing (patrolled by traffic lights), was that it would cut the borough in half, and funnelling all traffic into using the Malden roundabout and back roads like Amberwood Rise. There was also the question of pedestrians who crossed the bypass using the lights; provision would have to be made for them, either by a subway, or bridge, and barriers would have to be erected to prevent crossing the road. Malden Council decided to campaign for a roundabout at the junction. A tough job Charles Percy Hughes’s first job on leaving school aged 13 in 1902 was carrying a red flag in front of Malden’s steamroller whilst it was involved in road works. The flag was to avoid accidents as the public was not used to mechanical vehicles on the road where the speed limit was restricted to 14mph. Charles carried the flag for five years before being transferred to refuse collection where he remained for 42 years before owing to ill health he was moved to the sewage disposal works in California Road. He ultimately retired in 1954, having completed 51 years in the employ of the council- a record. Mr Hughes’s poor health had not prevented him “doing his bit” firstly in 1914 with the East Surrey Regiment for a year, and then again in 1917 he served with the same regiment in France. On finishing work, Charles was presented with a framed testimonial, and went on to enjoy 10 years of well earned retirement. At this time of commemoration of the beginning of World War One, ordinary people like Charles and Sydney (Wiles) should not be forgotten. 1) Sydney George Wiles 2) Malden Road 1954 3) South Lane before development.

Anne Cann MBE
Anne Cann, Chair of Age Concern Kingston and the Malden Care Scheme, visited Windsor Castle recently to be awarded an MBE by her Majesty the Queen. She was being recognised for 40 years of dedicated service to the community. A Kingston borough resident since 1966, Anne’s determination to work on behalf of older people stemmed from her time volunteering at Holly Lodge day centre, New Malden, in 1974. Small and oversubscribed, the centre’s facilities were limited. ‘If you needed to have a confidential conversation it meant facing the elements in the car park,’ remembers Anne. This experience gave her a clear vision of the substantial changes needed in order to reach the vulnerable and to provide services that people deserved. Personally modest, Anne Cann’s commitment to the community is a way of life. She has considerable personal experience as a carer, which has given her an even greater understanding of the issues faced by older and vulnerable people, and of the importance of readily accessible information and advice. Over the years Anne has supported and led many services, including overseeing the merging of several local charities to eventually establish Age Concern Kingston as a borough-wide charity in 1999. Today Age Concern Kingston is the leading independent charitable organisation dedicated to working with older people in south-west London, a winner of numerous awards, with a workforce of 70 staff supported by over 100 trained volunteers – an achievement of which Anne is immensely and justifiably proud. She also chairs the Malden Care Scheme: a group of local volunteers who give their time to make life a little easier for people in the community when problems arise and there is no one else to help. She has served on many borough-wide committees and is still heavily involved, even running Age Concern Kingston’s lunch club in Chessington, providing social opportunities for isolated older people. The ceremony at Windsor Castle was a very special way to recognise these fantastic achievements. ‘It was the sort of ceremony that the British do really well,’ says Anne, ‘carried out meticulously, every detail checked, timing perfect, yet with every member of the Palace staff working to make it a memorable and happy day for everyone.’ Reflecting on the day, Anne said, ‘This award should

also be shared by all our volunteers and staff. I would like to have taken a bus-load of guests to the ceremony so that everyone in the organisations I work with could have enjoyed the day too.’ T o find out more about Age Concern Kingston: 020 8942 8256 www.ageconcernkingston.org To find out more about the Malden Care Scheme 020 8949 2233 www.maldencare.org

New Malden children create staging for Romeo & Juliet Year 5 pupils at Burlington Junior School in New Malden have been working with Riverside Opera and Kingston Decorative and Fine Arts Society (KDFAS) on their own designs for staging an opera.
Riverside Opera, based in Kingston, has engaged Anett Black, a set and costume designer, to work with the children and their art coordinator, Lynn Lebidineuse. With Anett and Lynn’s help, the children have created their own concepts for a production of Gounod’s opera “Romeo and Juliet”. They brought these to life by designing costumes and masks, as well as designing sets and making scale models. In the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth, the children have learnt about the lives of people in Shakespeare’s time and, with the help of Riverside Opera, studied the story and music created by Gounod for his version of the classic tale of star-crossed love. The Burlington Junior School children’s work is
being displayed at The Rose Theatre throughout Riverside Opera’s performances, 14-17 May 2014, of both “Romeo & Juliet” and their children’s show, “Operantics!”, on 17 May 2014.

Stepping Out with the St James Players
“Stepping Out” by Richard Harris, the entertaining story of a tapdance class, is being performed by local group, St James’s Players, from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 May. If you saw their recent “Calendar Girls”, you will love this, as there is a similar mixture of personalities, humour and the occasional serious moment. The script, which chronicles several months in the life of a beginners’ tap class, won the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year award in 1984. Each of the eight students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, has his or her own reason for joining. For instance, Maxine, a confident, fast-talking saleswoman (and former Ovaltinee dancer), is there to get away from her teenage

step-son, while self-sacrificing Andy participates because it is the only thing she does for herself. Whatever the cause, they make a point of coming every week to chat, relax and, if they can manage to, learn a couple of dance steps. Led by Mavis, their eternally patient instructor, and accompanied by the acerbic pianist Mrs. Fraser, the students (who range from hopeless to competent) strive to master the basics of dance. But the steps and routines are just the background for the real focus of the play -- the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. By their final performance, not only have the class members developed some degree of skill, but they have also overcome the inhibitions, awkwardness and personality conflicts that have kept them out of sync. Tickets, costing £8 are available from the box office, 020 8408 0638 or on-line from www. stjamesplayers.co.uk. The show, in St James’s Hall, Bodley Road, New Malden, starts at 7.45pm each evening.

In fact, it’s the main reason for lack of sleep for most people – they just don’t realize it. Buying a new mattress might seem like an expense you can manage without but it’s one of the most valuable things you can do to improve your health and general well being.

Community Residents flock to have a butchers!....
On 5th April, the market filled with anticipation as Laurence Head of ‘The Real Butchers’ skilfully butchered a whole lamb in front of an ever increasing crowd.
It was the markets first free advertising demonstration…. and a rip roaring success! Laurence commented:” My mum and dad brought the shop when I was 3 years old and I haven’t been able to get away, so it will be 33 years this July! We’ve always liked to do things in the shop instead of buying in products, so we know where they’re from and what has gone into them. We do a good range of additive free sausages and burgers. We also cure all our gammons and bacon. We’ve been doing the market since it started in Dec 2012 and it’s turning in to a great thing. For our business, a shop, it’s nice to get out and speak
to all the public and get their feedback. It is great to be able to go to one place and get everything from meat for the week, fish, veg, cake for dessert and unusual gifts like glass and jewellery. The Demo Stall concept is a very good idea. It gives people a platform to show off their skills and also gives the public an idea as to what work and craftsmanship goes into making different products.” ‘The Real Butchers’, 135 Kingston Road, New Malden. www. therealbutchers.co.uk Tel: 020 8942 0582 The Market is situated at the Fountain Pub car park (By the Fountain round about) Burlington Road, New Malden, Surrey Every first Saturday 9am – 2pm www.nmfarmersmarket.co.uk

View from the City The Effect of People Power
by Justin Urquhart Stewart
developing nation and anything sub 6% will in effect feel somewhat recessionary. Perhaps this election will be the spur for change. Then we also have the Indonesian elections coming up. This huge nation, which is the same width as the USA, albeit with a lot more water in between, is in effect a Javanese Empire covering a vast number of islands. From decades of dictatorship, we can now see a better grounding of democracy with several presidential elections operating successfully. The change in the country has been astonishing, with a growing middle class showing its spending power and the country benefitting from the exports of its huge natural resources. Success in this presidential election in July will be seen as being a peaceful one; with 186 million voters and 555,000 polling stations this will be a great feat. The one great thing that this country needs is good governance, not just in the economy and to keep the nation together, but to address the endemic corruption that blights business and acts to put off aspiring inward investors. Then we can move around the globe to Brazil, where elections here are coming at a sensitive time for the government - who have already been feeling the effects of the whiff of tear gas in the air as rioters have been protesting. Like many other of the emerging nations, the boom years of the past decade have eased to a lower and slower rate of growth. Whilst not being necessarily a bad thing, it has impacted on one key area and that is expectations - the expectations of a frustrated populous who anticipated more than some new football stadiums and airports for the World Cup. Brazil had rather short sightedly acted to dissuade inward investors by, in effect, taxing them. Populist politicians feel that they can wrap themselves in the flag and win an election: wiser leaders hold the flag in one hand, and welcome investors in with the other. Thus, I hope the newly elected leaders of all three of these nations will realise that parochialism should not be confused with patriotism. Something which, rather closer to home, perhaps Mr. Salmond should take some notice of as well. Thanks, Justin Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor
Elections are strange beasts. Some we regard with admiration but others seem to induce merely a yawn of indolence. By way of example, I was in awe of those brave women going out to vote in Afghanistan whilst being threatened by both bombs and bullets. Now although we don’t know the results, and we certainly cannot gauge the amount of corruption, what we could all see was a remarkable turnout by a population wanting to express their views. Whether they get the leaders they deserve or, come to that, the leaders they voted for, remains to be seen but pictures of mules hauling ballot boxes around the Hindu Kush is a world away from what we are about to see in the leafy sleepy countryside in Britain. Here we have the European elections coming up and, in my own case, some council elections as well. In contrast to the driven efforts of those Afghan women, our voting will be barely noticed at all, with paltry turnouts and a wave of ambivalence. We don’t seem to regard voting as a precious right and privilege of the citizen but rather a tedious event with little or no effect. Well we should be careful. Without being overly dramatic, people have throughout our history been through pain and death to ensure that we have democratic rights. So before we toss that voting slip aside, perhaps we should appreciate such a precious privilege a little more - just in case we lose it to apathy and laziness. I think internationally we should show even more respect to the largest democracy in the world - India, who, despite its seemingly dysfunctional methods of doing things will, over a period of five months, carry out their general election. It may be easier to run a huge country with the totalitarianism of an oligarchy, as in China, but it is much harder to get things done so quickly in a functioning and fairer democracy. However, this election may have far broader consequences, with the possibility that the Congress party, which has always seen itself as the natural party of power ever since independence, may lose out to the more right wing and controversial BJP. Whoever wins will be facing a slowing economy which seems to have lost its vim and verve of the past few decades, and thus any new government hopefully will have a mandate to inspire change and encourage greater development to get the economy going from its laggardly 5%. This may seem patronising from an indebted nation like the UK with less than half such growth, but India is a 24 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

History
1914: Remembering Kingston at War
1914 saw the start of a war on a scale that had never been seen before. Over the next four years, millions of people across Europe and the wider world would be affected by this conflict and the residents of the Borough of Kingston upon Thames were no exception. As part of the commemorative events for the Centenary of the First World War and to recognise Kingston residents’ involvement in the war, Kingston Museum will be holding an exhibition from 16th May – 16th August. The exhibition will tell the often forgotten stories of the war: including those of men and women working long hours to produce planes used on the Western Front, young soldiers who enlisted to fight in Europe despite being under age, those who spoke out against the war, the nurses and doctors who cared for the injured officers returning from the Front to recuperate in Kingston and the families who came to Kingston from Belgium, looking for a safe place to live. The exhibition is a result of an original research project funded by HLF which seeks to research and record

the experiences of Kingston’s community in the war. It is supported by an appointed project leader, Lucy Harris, and a team of 15 volunteers who have put in an inordinate amount of hours and have discovered some thrilling histories. Explaining the importance of this exhibition, project leader, Lucy Harris said: “This compelling exhibition seeks to add local stories to the larger narrative concerning the war, reminding us that this was a war which involved members of the community who lived and worked in similar ways to us today.” Once the exhibition closes at the museum it will then tour to local libraries, ensuring its message reaches as wider audience as possible.

15th Kingston Beer & Cider Festival
Once again the Kingston & Leatherhead branch of CAMRA will be holding their annual beer and cider festival at the Kingston Workman’s Club in Old London Road, just by the ‘falling down telephone boxes’. There will be over fifty beers available from all over the country made up various styles, and a dozen ciders and perries. This years logo features a Kingston built Sopwith Tabloid seaplane that won the renowned Schneider Trophy in Monaco in 1914, admittedly without the help of the usual three fishes which are always there somewhere abouts. This year the festival will be opening a day earlier than in past years on Thursday 15th May at 5pm, and continuing through Friday and Saturday opening at 11am and closing at 11pm and 9pm respectively. Hot and cold food will be available in the outdoor seating areas. It is hoped that the deputy mayor will formally be opening this year’s festival. The cost of entry will be £3 on Thursday, Friday free until 4pm, £3 after that, and £2 on Saturday.

Kids
New baby in New Malden by Lucy Howard
We’d arranged a playdate for Saturday afternoon with my friend and her little girl. I was thinking maybe Beverley Park or Pets@Home. “I’ve picked up this flyer for a rave in Brixton...” my much more adventurous friend suggested. And so I was cajoled into spending the afternoon in a Brixton nightclub called JAMM at an event designed for under-11s, or as the flyer had it “2-4 hour party people.” It didn’t take us too long to get there - just under an hour from New Malden (train to Vauxhall then a couple of buses) - and we were immediately made to feel welcome by the smiling staff who handed each of our little ones a glowstick. Big Sister made a beeline for the craft area where she made herself jewel-encrusted cardboard crowns, while Baby was quite happy in the chill-out room playing in a ball pit. She wasn’t actually too keen on the dance room as she’s afraid of the dark and obviously found the light show effects a bit unnerving. However the older girls, and their mums, really appreciated the chance to get down on the dance floor to a proper DJ playing at child-friendly
volume. And no-one batted an eyelid when Baby decided she needed a breastfeed in the middle of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”. We felt that the organisers had made a good effort to make sure that it was an event that parents and children would all appreciate. We liked the little touches like the confetti which drifted down from the ceiling onto the little revellers, and the seemingly unlimited free smoothies (plus a bar for the grownups!) The downsides: reasonably expensive (£8 per adult, £4.50 per child), a slightly faffy journey to get there, and the chance of sensory overload for the tiniest party people. In fact, all of our little ones were suffering from disco burnout after an hour and a half, but fortunately there was an excellent playground on Brixton Road just five minutes’ walk away to get the colour back in those cheeks. To find out more about these monthly events search online for the Big Fish Little Fish Events website and maybe we’ll see you on the dance floor! A big thank you to Claire from the Tadpoles toddler group which meets on Friday mornings at New Malden Baptist Church. Following my article about the difficulty of taking a child with severe allergies to toddler groups, she emailed suggesting that Tadpoles might be able to accommodate someone with severe allergies. Thank you very much!

Community Maldens And Coombe Heritage Society
You may recall that about 18 months ago we announced the formation of the Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society, whose aim is to secure our heritage for future generations. We announced that we consider peoples’ memories are heritage as they, more than anything else, can tell of bygone days, people, shops, buildings, events which would otherwise be lost. Everyone has a story to tell about our ‘village’ and we set about procuring and recording any memories that people wanted to share. We are now in the happy and rewarding position to be able to share such memories with you, the inhabitants of The Village, as we announce the launch of our first compilation booklet which we hope will become a series and in so doing, shall record the history of the area as told by the people who actually lived here. The booklet comprises over 50 recollections, told on 74 pages and with local photos it will take you back to a time when days were known by the chore of the day for instance baking day, shopping day, ironing day and, of course, before you could iron, was washday. The launch date is Saturday, 10th May and the booklet shall be available from 12.30 to 3.00pm at the New Malden Methodist Church. Members of the Society will be in attendance, including contributors to the booklet and Robin Gill, who is the font (or should that be The Fountain?) of local history knowledge. The cost is £3.50 which has been priced with minimal profit margin such that we hope it is affordable to those who still have their recollections to tell us. The minimal profit made will assist in the production of the next edition. Your contribution will therefore help us to continue compiling and archiving our local history. In addition to the launch various members of the society will assist with guidance on family history research, will provide details of our meetings and, of course, will explain the ongoing Recollections project and how you and or people you may know could help us by providing memories of life here in days of old and not so old. It is extremely important that people do not simply think of the ‘olden’ days and ignore the 70s, 80s and 90s as these will, in time, become the ‘olden’ days! Please don’t worry if you cannot attend the
44
launch, you will not lose out on the opportunity of purchasing a copy of the booklet. Simply contact us at The Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society, 135C South Lane, New Malden KT3 5HQ Tel: 020 8949 3157 Email: maldensandcoombehs@gmail.com providing your contact details and we shall advise you of where you can obtain a copy or we shall arrange to post one to you following receipt of payment for the booklet and postage. Of course, if you wish to contribute to the next edition, or know someone with a story of the Maldens and Coombe area to tell then we would love to hear from you and would simply ask that you drop us a line at recollectionsmchg@gmail.com or write to “Recollections 2” c/o 52 Blagdon Road, New Malden KT3 4AE. Finally, don’t forget that we meet regularly and if you would like to come along one evening and hear one of our guest speakers or just see what we do just ask us for further details, we are a friendly group. We look forward to meeting you and helping us preserve the heritage and historical knowledge of the area. Julian McCarthy (MACHS)

Christ Church New Malden Primary May fair
Christ Church New Malden Primary School is hoping pupils, parents, friends, neighbours and members of the local community will be willing to “clown around’ for the afternoon as it opens its doors to the Circus-themed May Fair on Saturday 17h May. The fun starts at 12noon (at Christ Church Primary Infants site, Lime Grove) and, as ever, the school’s May Fair will offer a huge range of traditional activities for people to take part in and enjoy – as well a number of exciting games and attractions which will all be new for 2014. A huge inflatable will be available for the more energetic guests alongside an amazing opportunity for visitors (whatever your age!) to try their hand at a range of circus skills. Mini workshops, led by a team of experienced circus performers, will be taking place all afternoon and will be free to anyone willing to give it a go!
Parents from the school will be hosting a large international food hall including a variety of freshly cooked Korean meals; a BBQ (bangers and burgers supplied by New Malden’s Real Butchers) and bar / ‘Pimms’ tent. And, for the third year running (after its popular launch in 2012) the Jubilee Tea Room will be providing a peaceful space for people to sit down and enjoy tea, coffee and a selection of cakes (whilst admiring the stunningly scrummy, culinary talents of those who entered the annual ‘cake bake’ competition!) There will also be live performances from a local Zumba group, a children’s entertainer, the London All Stars Majorettes and Christ Church’s very own, newly formed ukulele group! (aka “The New M.U.G.S.”!) Co-Chair of the PTA, Sue Wilson, comments; “This year’s circus-themed fair will once more be the flagship event in the school’s fundraising calendar – and really does promise to be a fun-packed day. With so much on offer, it would be great to see lots of members of our local community popping in as well – they’ll definitely be met with a very warm welcome and there really will be something to entertain everyone! “We are so lucky to have such fantastic involvement

This Spring has been especially busy for our staff, as the Junior section of Christ Church Primary only moved into its new buildings on Elm Road over the Easter holidays – so this seems a fitting way for staff and pupils to let their hair down and celebrate our wonderful school community.” For the first time, the line up of stalls at the Fair will also include a nearly new, “quality” children’s clothes sale, with all proceeds going to the School. A huge selection of prizes and “experiences” has also been generously donated – many from local businesses - and the first prize in the raffle will this year be an i-pad mini. Many congratulations to the Village Voice for reaching its 100th edition! We’re very grateful for the support we’ve had from the Village Voice in our fundraising efforts and the invaluable editorials. It really has made a huge difference to our recent minibus campaign. Gardening
Water, water, everywhere by Pippa Greenwood
A water-feature adds magic to any garden. The sound of tinkling water and the movement of light on its surface can be just the finishing touch you need either for a patio or for a much larger garden. There’s a plentiful choice of water-features of all shapes, styles, and sizes; but before you commit yourself, what are the main points to bear in mind? First, position. For moving water, your feature will use an electric pump, so there has to be a power-point nearby – something often overlooked. Do you want an eye-catching centrepiece for a formal garden, or just the music of running water as the soundtrack to your alfresco Sunday lunch? In either case, you need to consider carefully the appropriate position. Water-features can turn bright green in summer due to the build-up of algae. You can go a long way towards preventing this by positioning them away from direct sunlight. Make sure they’re well away from deciduous trees, too, as falling leaves will clog everything up. For smaller spaces you’re best off with a self-contained feature. There are lots of lovely ones available such as terracotta or glazed pot stacks with the water continuously pumped from one container to another, so you’ll only need to top it up in the hottest weather. Spouts and fountains are great fun. A spitting fish, frog, or gargoyle adds a touch of art – or humour – while oxygenating a pool, reducing algae and keeping the pond-life happy. If you want moving water but perhaps have toddlers, a millstone with a low, centrally-positioned jet is both beautiful and safe. Plants are integral to any pond. Surface-floating plants such as waterlilies not only look gorgeous but their leaves also shade the water – again, reducing algae. Waterlilies need still water, so are best avoided if you have a fountain; but a single spitting feature at one end of the pool shouldn’t create too much turbulence. Plants around the edges of a pools and ponds are called marginals and do best in shallower water or boggy ground. Use plenty: they look gorgeous, they hide the liner and they’re a haven for wildlife. Marginals to consider include yellow-flowered marsh marigold (caltha palustris); white-flowered bog arum (calla palustris); miniature reed-mace (typha minima); pale blue water forget-me-not (myosotis scorpioides); and purple-bloomed water and bog iris (eg iris laevigata). You’ll need about two plants per metre. For a more formal look choose shapely rushes or ferns. Water-features attract wildlife, and in summer you might be visited by dragonflies or mayflies. Birds may also come to drink and bathe. And even a small pond needs a
48
safe exit-route in case hedgehogs pop by for a drink and tumbles in. A shallow beach of pebbles should do the trick. If your feature has a sizeable surface, net it in the autumn to catch falling leaves. Garden netting stretched taut is ideal. Remove it as necessary to tip off the leaves. Left in the water they’ll both clog the pumps and produce methane, which is toxic. In winter, don’t let the water-feature freeze up. If extreme cold is forecast smaller features are best emptied, and the pump cleaned and stored in the shed. Fish need an ice-free area on the surface or they’ll be killed by methane building up under the ice. Floating a football on the surface helps. Teen Malden Rape
by Diaz Gillard-Brockhouse
as an indicator of promiscuity. This unfair, unjust – and actually unlawful – tactic always has devastating consequences. Lindsay Armstrong was raped in September 2001. During the trial, Armstrong was asked to hold up the underwear she had been wearing at the time she was raped. This was supposed to allow her rapist’s defence team to argue that the pants had not been damaged and therefore no force had been used, showing that she had consented. However, Lindsay was made to announce to the court the words that were written on them: ‘little devil’. Nothing was proved by this act of public humiliation, and it served no purpose other than to try and smear her reputation, and prove she was the ‘sort of girl not likely to refuse sex’. So although her rapist was convicted, Lindsay Armstrong killed herself three weeks later. Sadly, this is all too common a story. The length of a skirt, the shade of a lipstick, a bare midriff or a low cut top are time after time used by defence barristers to try and prove that the victim was willing to engage in a sexual act. To assume that the fashion or makeup choices you make on a particular day can lead to rape – that clothes can speak for women who say no – is absurd, nonsensical and extremely damaging. The court’s assertion is cleara victim’s clothes say enough about the sort of person she is to allow the suggestion to be made that she has asked to be raped. A woman’s clothing is often used to prove her guilt in the act of rape, and therefore she becomes the figure of blame.
Extract from Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty... ‘Kevin looks at me. ‘Last year’ he says, ‘I had a case, one of those girls I was talking about earlier, fourteen years old, council estate, sweet kid but been in a bit of trouble at school. It was a gang rape, in a park; there were five of them, men from the estate where she lived. She’d been drinking beer with them, a summer’s evening. They’d given her that super-strength lager and I don’t think this kid had any idea how strong that stuff is. She wasn’t all that bright to be honest, shoplifting and so on. There were five of them; they each raped her, in the bushes. Lots of people walking past on the path a few yards away but she was too scared to call out, petrified someone would see them and word would get out she was a slag, she said. Five of them, so that means in court there are five defence barristers. She’s fifteen years old by then, and she’s in the witness stand for five days in a row, and these five defence barristers stand up, one after the other, call her a liar, five days in a row. And that’s what we do to children’. Is it right that rape victims are put on trial when it should be their attacker? Should the victim have to prove they didn’t invite rape? It’s hard to believe that in 2014, 27% of people still believe a woman is to blame for rape if she wears revealing clothing. Do you think girls in short skirts invite rape? Do you actually know what rape is? The current legal definition of rape is very complicated, but broadly speaking it is an act of sexual intercourse without Tree Surgery • Tree Felling the victim’s consent and where the rapist knows no Stump Grinding consent has been given. Furthermore, it is distressing that 29% Fruit tree management of women do not tell anyone they’ve been raped: not friends, not the police, not even family. There are Fully qualified Arborists lots of reasons for this, but many professional bodies £5 Million Liability Insurance including the police, victim support groups and rape Local Authority Approved charities believe reported rape figures are so low Free Quotations and Advice because victims think they will be disbelieved because info@turnertreecare.co.uk of the ‘victim blaming culture’ that exists in today’s society. But what are they scared of? Firstly, there is the issue of consent – what is consent? Consent is defined as to whether the victim ‘agrees by choice, and has the freedom and capacity to make that choice’. Now, obviously, nobody would consent to rape by saying ‘yes’. However, in courts, legal representatives often try and argue that a woman consents to sex through the clothes she wears. Women’s clothing, and more specifically what she was wearing at the time of the incident, is often used as a weapon against them; 52 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

But it’s not only the lawyers that try and use this as a line of questioning. The holders of justices, the judges themselves, also seem to believable this ludicrous TRUSTWORTHY AND idea. Judge Julian Hall gave a two-year sentence to a PROFESSIONAL 43 year old man who raped a 10 year old child on the No job too small grounds that the ‘girl had dressed provocatively and Free estimates looked as though she was 16.’ No matter what that Interior & exterior 10 year old was wearing, she did not invite rape, and Painting & Decorating undertaken her attacker should be the one blamed. This case was only highlighted in the media to prove the girls part in Phone STEWART the attack, and not the rapist’s guilt, which is morally, 0791 314 4514 or ethically and socially wrong. The girl’s clothing never 0208 942 0834 should’ve been used against her in court to justify the rapist actions, but does reflect social attitudes towards not only rape victims, but women in general. Every one of us in this room would be lying if we said we have never judged another girl on the basis of what she’s wearing. I’m certain we’ve all been told, even here in school, that our ‘skirts are too short’, that we’re ‘wearing too much makeup’ and that we’ll attract the ‘wrong sort of attention’. But, we as young women have the right to wear whatever we chose, without the risk of violence and attack, and should never have to justify our choices against a man who has broken the law and ruined a life. Rape is one of the most traumatic personal crimes against women. It not only ruins the life of the victim, but of the people around them, and has devastating long term effects. The idea that a woman would endure this out of choice is preposterous. The idea that a woman would endure this; be brave enough to report it; be brave enough to stand on trial and relive it in front of the public and her attacker and still bear the burden of the blame is appalling, saddening and simply sickening. The Better Life May Day Foraging by Derek Thompson
The 1st of May usually means one thing in our house - a trip to the Obby Oss festival at Padstow, on Cornwall’s north coast. It’s generally a glorious day, especially when it doesn’t fall on a weekend or a bank holiday (less traffic). We like to get to Padstow early and soak up the atmosphere. There is drumming and singing, streets bedecked with greenery, and people wearing sprays of cowslips and other flowers. Some say it’s a halfremembered nature and fertility festival, but even if its origins lie in the 1800s it’s a great way to welcome in the summer. And after the winter we’ve had - and the spring too - our garden needs all the help it can get. Mixed in with all the folklore is a tradition of our own - the annual Padstow crazy golf match in which, invariably: a) Anne will forget to write down her score and then introduce a new version of mathematics. b) I will play one or two epic holes yet somehow still end up losing by a wide margin.
In keeping with our greener aspirations, a trip out is a perfect opportunity to do a bit of foraging. Our first stop is a lay-by that has fresh mackerel on sale (top tip: always check the eyes). From there, with our trusty wild food guides stowed aboard, we head west a little, still hugging the north coast, to visit friends on the north coast who are blessed with both fields and patience. We don’t travel up country that often, so knowing more experienced foragers is a real bonus. Left to my own devices I can easily find wild garlic and nettles, but that’s not much of a meal. Successful (i.e. safe and bountiful) foraging requires knowledge and experience, as well permission from the landowner. Last time we ventured north, we managed to forage for cow parsley, chickweed and the aniseed flavoured sweet cicely. We thought we were doing brilliantly until

our friends told us that they had created a variety of soil types and seeded them to encourage wild food. Even so, a find is a find. When we get home, while Anne cleans the fish (I can’t help it if I’m squeamish), I introduce the foraged leaves to a homegrown lettuce and usually we wrap the mackerel in foil with butter and pop it in the oven. Once, in a spirit of adventure, I tried smoking mackerel indoors, following Alan Titchmarsh’s Complete Countryman (an encouraging gift from a neighbour). To be honest, it was a bit of a kerfuffle, what with salting the fish beforehand, lining the pan with foil, adding the smoking mixture; laying the fish on chopsticks, popping it in the pan and then covering it with a lid. Smoking fish is one talent I’ve yet to master properly, but if you haven’t put the pan lid on properly it’s also a great way to test your smoke alarm. A foraged salad has a surprising range of subtle and bitter tastes, while steamed chickweed really tastes like spinach. As summer finally reaches our garden, it is possible to forage there for wild garlic, nettles and dandelion leaves (yes, really). Sadly, though, in my experience, you can never find a wild strawberry when you want one. A Malden Man A Family Unit
by Raj Randhawa It was dusk by the time I reached Kingston Road on my way to get a take-away. There was a slight chill in the air. Cars sped past to and from New Malden. As I neared the library, I noticed on the opposite pavement an unsettling drama unfold, oblivious to the passing traffic. A man and a woman seemed to be wrestling over a baby stroller. I slowed my step to watch them, ready to intervene, but I soon realised that rather than a kidnapping in progress or an altercation between strangers, the man and woman were together. As I got closer, I watched as she held firmly on to the stroller handle as only a mother can, while he tried to free the stroller from her. He twisted and lifted it on to two wheels, pushed, pulled, hopped it from one wheel to the other, but it was no use. She was resolute. Mothers can’t let go of their children that easily. I thought of the poor child, who must have felt
like it was trapped on a particularly bumpy fairground ride. I couldn’t just walk by and ignore what was going on, so I continued my pigeon steps while spying on them. I felt uneasy- not wanting to get involved in a family dispute, but also not wanting to be the indifferent guy that walks on by at the first sign of trouble. It was the child I was concerned about. Realising his attempts were futile, the man released the stroller and walked away. After a few paces he stopped, turned around and walked back towards her. Oblivious to everything around them, they recommenced their tussle, this time verbally- their words drowned out by the passing traffic. The man became more agitated- his arms flailing while she doggedly gripped the stroller. Seeming to have exhausted words, they arrived at an impasse. There was a lull. They stared at one another in silence, while inside, I’m certain each of them must have been screaming like a banshee. Then it happened. With both her hands grasping the handle, she couldn’t stop him. He reached in to the stroller, grabbed the child, held him to his shoulder and hurried away towards the Fountain roundabout. It all happened so fast. Shocked, I stopped spying and was now staring. I edged towards the kerb, trying to make sense of what was unfolding. The woman pulled out her mobile

phone and began dialling. She followed the man for a few paces and then stopped, keeping her eyes fixed on him. I watched him continue along the road. He stopped to pull the blanket over the child’s head and carefully propped him higher up his shoulder, before kissing the sleeping child. He continued walking towards the roundabout and stopped at the bus stop. He was in no great hurry to get anywhere. I guess when you’re in the midst of such a fracture, there’s nowhere on earth you can go. I returned my gaze to the woman, who seemed in no hurry to save her child. She stood talking in to her mobile. Nothing about her betrayed the drama, in which she had a main role. She surely couldn’t have thought her child was in danger. I wondered who she was talking to. The police? A friend? I looked back towards the bus stop, where the man was still cradling the child, holding him close and kissing him. I decided to remove myself from the situation, even though neither of them knew I existed. There was no point in sticking around. I was none the wiser to what the hell was going on, but at least the child wasn’t in any danger. I walked on, having momentarily lost my appetite and any desire for a take-away. As I walked away, I got to thinking. What can we ever know about the inner workings of any relationship?
We might well make assumptions about a couple or watch their drama unfold before our very eyes, but how much can that really tell us about their relationship? Relationships are usually far more complex than we can imagine. I guess we need only to look at our own. I wondered what had caused the unfortunate struggle I had witnessed earlier. Who was in the wrong? Perhaps the child was the only innocent party in the whole fiasco. Whatever had taken place, I hoped I would never again have to witness such a public display of disaffection.
