Welcome to the Village Voice My first edible front cover, thanks to Piped With Love, (see p65) and very tasty it was too! Yes, ten years ago the very first edition of the Village Voice was printed and delivered. I would absolutely love to take credit for having the idea and starting the magazine but we owe that to lovely Mandy (Mardell). When I heard that Mandy was looking to sell up (Feb ‘07) i pretty much threw myself at the opportunity (bit like those brave Scots in that gutting quarter final rugby match) before somebody else did. As a mum of two under 5s I embraced the opportunity of working from home and was thrilled (if a little daunted) when Mandy said YES to me!! Within a year we increased the number prin-ted each month by around 5,000 and within 2, started a split distribution meaning we deliver to around 12,000 homes over 2 months. This is a fantastic job and I LOVE it! So a massive thanks to Mandy and everyone who has contributed, advertised and read any of the last 121 editions. The Village Voice wouldn’t be here without a massive dose of New Malden loyalty. Oh, and to my wonderful husband who moved me here in the first place. Thank you all, and here’s to the next 10 years!!!

Greater sadness was to follow when during operations near Sierra Leone, James caught Yellow Fever succumbing to the disease in hospital on Ascension Island on 15th July. He had been married 84 days, and apart from his wife for the majority of that time. Property or land in New Malden began to appear in advertisements. Houses in Malden Grove described as brick built with large gardens producing a rental of £37 12shillings per year were offered for auction. But it was not all land for building. In January 1855 sixty five acres in Coombe Lane came under the hammer, but advertised as being suitable for compact farms “with delightful scenery”. Unfortunately, the railway station was in a dilapidated state described as nothing more than a cattle station. On the down side platform, there were requests for the platform to be lengthened to accommodate longer trains, and for some sort of cover to be provided as passengers were left open to the elements while waiting for trains. 1850s. It commenced in 1857, and by the end of 1858 had built up a membership of around 80, and a library had been started. A number of exhibitions were held displaying produce (mainly root crops and fruit), and there was even a ploughing match organised at Hoppingwood Farm.
But all was not sweetness and light in Malden. Harriet Malone was a 24 year old maid from Liverpool who worked for Mrs Penny in Beulah Villa in Chestnut Grove. In 1859 she became pregnant, and her mistress sent to Kingston for a doctor (Dr Chatterton). As soon as the doctor arrived at the house Harriet slipped out of the back door unseen, and Mr Berry across the road at made her way to a large pond the Railway Tavern often laid which stood close by. Robin Gill as a contributer – his articles are meticulously researched and of great interest. John Nicholson Railway Lines Malden was not standing still transport wise, with a packed meeting held at the Malden Tavern in October 1858 to hear Mr William Bull outlined his plans to build a railway line from Isleworth to New Malden. The line would run through Richmond, Hampton Wick, Kingston, and Norbiton at a cost of one penny per mile. Despite unanimous approval locally, it was apparent that this line would be in direct competition to the London and South Western Railway, who immediately put forward plans for a branch line from Twickenham to Kingston, taking most of Mr Bull’s route and ideas. The line was later extended to Malden via Norbiton. No Help From Kingston In November 1859 Mr William Chutter a builder of Acacia Grove advised residents at a meeting, that in his opinion, both his road and Chestnut Grove, were in a good enough state both as roadways and in respect of drainage to be now taken into the parish, and maintained in future by Kingston Council. All that remained was an inspection by the magistrates and surveyors from the town. (This was later refused by Kingston). It was still hoped that Scarems (Elm Road) could also be put in a good state of repair which would cut the journey between the village and Kingston by ¾ mile. All the roads had been maintained by the inhabitants without any help from the authorities.

Clubs
New Malden Velo New Malden Velo was founded in 2014 to give cyclists of varying ages and ability-levels the opportunity to enjoy social and leisure cycling activities within a safe, group environment. As well as having fun, our ambition is to improve road–safety awareness through increasing the amount of cyclists within the local area. We all cycled as children, so let’s keep people on 2 wheels, improving relationships and safety on the road. Affiliated to British Cycling, we have nearly 50 active members, regularly taking part in weekend rides such as through the Surrey Hills, to Brighton, or to Windsor. We run family rides (including “after dark around Richmond Park” - especially enjoyed by children), and participate in sportives, representing the local community. We’ve already arranged two trips to the French Alps, taking part in La Grand Bo race near Annecy last year, and this year climbing mountains made famous in the Tour de France including Alpe d’Huez, Col du Glandon, Col de la Croix de Fer, and Lacets de Montvernier. We are visiting the Italian Alps in 2016 for more spectacular cycling. Our ethos is that “no one gets left behind” and we aspire to providing opportunities for all levels of cyclists, regardless of age or gender. Our ambition is to provide enjoyable rides by enabling similar ability riders to ride together. We need members to achieve our aspirations though, so please join us! We plan to set up training and coaching sessions to improve cycling skills and technical know-how. Again, we need increased members to be able to provide this. The origins of the club date back to 2009, when a group of local neighbours and Corpus Christi School Dads took part in the BHF London to Brighton ride. Subsequent Capital 2 Coast rides, London to Windsor, and Ride London events were entered, and as a group we are proud to have raised over £10k for various charities. Word of mouth lead to Corpus Christi Dad membership growing, as more and more of us realised that we were going on similar Sunday 10
journeys, but individually – and it’s more fun and safer to cycle together. Ride numbers snow-balled and we started to discuss making the group more “official”. We also realised that it was important that we became more inclusive, creating the Richmond Park fun rides and recruiting female members as a result. We started to meet at Woodies, Thetford Road, drafting a constitution and club rules, and most importantly creating a kit. None of us are quite sure how we voted for our orange shirts, but we’ve grown to love them. We are passionate about our club and cycling, and are proud of our all-inclusiveness, something that sets us apart from other cycling clubs. However to make the club a success, we need to have enough riders of varying abilities to provide suitable rides for all. As a result we’d be delighted if you could join us. My family and I are looking forward to receiving the magazine every month and reading about what’s going on in the local area. Best wishes from Christine at Yogaberry The Richard Challoner School community wishes the Village Voice editorial team all the best for the next 10 years! We have regularly advertised in the Village Voice and have been very pleased with the response and awareness that the magazine has generated for us. We feel the magazine is fairly unique and a useful tool for local businesses, educational organisations and community groups.

Congratulations on your 10th anniversary and for companioning life in New Malden so well and usefully. I was born in Worcester Park in 1940 but my grandparents lived in New Malden until 1946 when they exchanged houses and retired to Sussex by the sea. So I remember days of collecting Grandma’s divvy coins at the Co-op and shopping at separate counters in Sainsbury’s in the High Street. I travelled through New Malden to the County school in Wimbledon and after working in London and joining the Sisters of Holy Cross, I returned to live in New Malden in the then newly built convent in Lynton Road, now Lynton Hall Care home. So I have lived in New Malden a long time and appreciate all we have here. Another anniversary in our family of a 60th wedding with a Peter gathering in Argentina where the couple now live with half their family is to be celebrated shortly and I will travel out there. And Alice Piggott is reaching 100 and remains a smiling lady greeting me at Raleigh House where I volunteer. There is a lot of goodness around in New Malden to celebrate and to be thankful for. Sr Angela Peter The Rotary Club of New Malden is delighted to add our congratulations to the many being published in this the 10th anniversary edition of the Village Voice under the editorship of Jenny Stuart. We, like many other organisations, have benefitted from the articles and publicity afforded to us over the time that Jenny has developed the profile and circulation of the “Voice” since she took it over in 2005. In recognition of our close relationship we were proud to present Jenny with the Rotary Community Award a few years ago in acknowledgement of the amount of hard work she had put in for the benefit of businesses and residents of New Malden. We wish her and the magazine good wishes for further success in the future. Peter Hope, President, Jean Skinley, Secretary. The Rotary Club of New Malden The Village Voice is a great example of what I love about New Malden. As a Company we find that it is a great tool to give people an insight into the area before moving here. As a local resident and Secretary of the Malden Fortnight Committee I love the strong Community Spirit and the Village Vibe which I always find in the magazine as well as the support it gives to our events. Thank you Jenny! Nikki McGibbon, Groves Residential

New Malden Matters New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents’ Association
This is the 10th Anniversary of the Villlage Voice and, in effect, the 10th year the New Malden Residents’ Association has been in existence. I often think that if you knew at the beginning of these initiatives the amount of work that would be involved, you would probably run as fast as you could in the opposite direction. But, and it is a big but, the benefits that accrue from being involved in Associations of this nature are huge. It is often said that if you do a good deed for someone, the benefits are probably as great, if not greater, for the donor than for the recipient. And this can be said for Residents’ Associations. You get to meet a lot of people, see that communities such as ours in New Malden is kept together by those in the community working very hard in all sorts of voluntary situations and quite willingly putting their time and effort into their particular passion or cause. This is particularly relevant, I think, when the Press and other forms of national communication contains so much bad news, each and every day. I know that when I go on holiday, as I did recently for a week, I really don’t want to hear anything on the news that could cast a cloud on my time! So it is refreshing to know, to realise, that there is another side to life and one where people genuinely care about others, maybe not so fortunate as they are. The New Malden Farmers’ Market does attempt to have a Charity Stall at each month’s Market and it is here that you can see just how many organisations there are in and around New Malden run by people, not only retired with time on their hands, but also those in full time work. Communities such as New Malden are coming under increasing pressure as regards housing, traffic and the consequences of exhaust pollution, struggling High Streets, pressure on care for the elderly, etc. etc.
16
But, and again it is a big BUT, we can do something about it. It is the residents in Kingston that pay the piper and it is Councillors and Council Officials who should be working for us, not for Developers etc. who do not live in the vicinity and have no interest other than making money.
If the Council are genuine in their stated aim of “listening and working with residents”, one of the first things they could do is improve their telephone service which, in my opinion, is appallingly bad. Their website is not much better and is more confusing than helpful. In many companies, the first contact made by prospective clients/customers is the Receptionist and that person can set the whole tone of the organisation. I think this is the same with Kingston Council - to get in contact with anyone in the Council can be a herculean effort So, notwithstanding all the hard work and disappointments with some of the things happening in New Malden that have been present from the beginning of the Association, the good thing is that more and more active people are becoming involved and our objectives and aims, both for the Association and New Malden, are becoming a reality. So, congratulations to THE VILLAGE VOICE on its 10th Anniversary, to Jenny, contributers and advertisers and for the contribution it has made to New Malden. A photographer dreams November -
by Hugh Griffiths I love clouds and the colours of the sky, sea and land that can be part of a beach photograph. One of the joys of the autumn is that it isn’t that cold, and the dawn is at a reasonable time of day – no having to get up at 5 in order to see the sun rise above the horizon! I took this picture just before 7 a.m. from the beach front in Lancing. The colours are lovely (well, at least I think they are) and the sense of depth that is there, together with the sun just gilding the clouds in the distance are lovely. In terms of composition, I have tried to show elements of land, sea and sky … without all of these, the photo might be pretty but wouldn’t make the picture one that you can stare at for any period of time. Its important to think how to keep a viewer’s interest in a picture – chocolate box scenes tend not to do that any more. Now, this second picture – taken at about midday in early November has two things that really make me excited. I have a thing for seagulls – love photographing them – and for clouds because they can give such character to a picture. I was pleased to get the seagull
flying towards the clouds in this shot: ideally it would have been coming towards me so that I could have a full frontal of the bird. But never mind. There is an element of Jonathan Livingstone Seagull here – where is the bird going? – and it looks so delicate against the clouds, so fragile in a wild world. The colours in the picture help of course. Without that bit of blue sky in the top left it would be very different. Maybe still a good picture, but certainly a different one. Note also, that for both these shots I have cropped them from the original size so that the features I want to emphasise are clearer. In that first picture there was far too much of the beach in the original – had to get rid of it and leave only the small part on the left. For the seagull – I have cropped out the sea itself – all you get is the sky and clouds, and the bird. Quite a different feel. And last November, I had a day at the Natural History

Museum with a group from ‘Black & White Photography’ magazine. I was definitely the poorest photographer of the lot – found it really hard to get some great pictures. But this one from the dinosaur room gives a sense of the threat to life and limb that these creatures could be. Doing it in mono made an otherwise nice but dim picture come out as something more frightening. Black and white can really make a graphic picture jump out of the screen at you. Colour can sometimes take the shapes and blur their impact. Try it – if you have a picture that has strong patterns in it – it may be more effective by taking the colour out of it. Not always – but very often this is the case. And, of course, you can always join the Malden Camera Club to get comments and advice on your photos.

Interested in having your say on Growth & Development? Join us to talk about your priorities this November Dear Resident, You are invited to take part in the first Neighbourhood Community Forum in Maldens & Coombe on 25 November. Kingston Council is launching Community Forums across the borough this year to talk about important local issues, so come along and and join the debate. The forums give local residents the chance to discuss their priorities and develop solutions with Council Officers, local Councillors and partner organisations such as the Police and NHS. They will be informal workshop style meetings, with feedback gathered and developed into a new Community Plan for Maldens & Coombe to help define the way services are delivered in the area. Each forum will follow a different theme, which will be set by local residents. The theme for the first meeting is Growth & Development, which will include areas such as the Cocks Crescent development area, housing, the High Street and traffic. This theme has been chosen by us in response to priorities raised by local people in recent months. The Growth & Development Forum will take place on Wednesday 25 November, 7:30pm at Burlington Junior School, Burlington Road, New Malden KT3 4LT. The doors will open at 7pm, when you will have the chance to meet and talk with other attendees and enjoy a complimentary cup of tea or coffee. To help me organise refreshments, I would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance. For more information or to RSVP, contact me on 020 8547 5937 or email hannah.keates@kingston.gov.uk If you have access to Facebook, search for Maldens & Coombe Neighbourhood for regular updates. You can also follow me on Twitter - @hannah_keates. I look forward to meeting you in November. News for Saga Louts
24
I was at the ABTA conference this week and I was fascinated to see just how the travel industry is changing. As a rather cynical consumer I was very encouraged to see how much imagination is now being applied to providing a far more tailored range of holiday services. Personally I was particularly enthusiastic that they were targeting those of my age who were referred to as the ‘Saga Lout’ generation, those in their late fifties and early sixties who were still wanting to behave badly (well only quite badly) whilst still having fun on their holidays. Now don’t get me wrong we will not be trashing the place, but equally we are not going to be rolling around in a squeaky wheelchair. I first heard the term when travelling with some chums on Eurostar and after a long lunch we were in a jolly mood but possibly a bit loud for some - in fact too loud for a young man who even had earphones on, who complained that he could not work as we were making too much noise and were just a bunch of Saga Louts well if the cap fits! I will wear it with pride. Meanwhile back at the ABTA conference, it was fascinating to talk with many of the delegates about how they will manage their futures as the digital age is potentially “disintermediating” (‘bypassing’ in English) them into history. And the answer? Well I was pleased to hear that it was service, and human personal service tailored to the client; avoiding those hideous IVR telephone choice systems, and not using mass market call centres were two areas highlighted. They all agreed that it should be about focusing on being able to offer professional advice and experience for the would-be traveller, tailored to a specific age group. And in the case of the ‘Saga Louts’, they are a group who are quite capable of using online services but they also want to be able to speak to someone - a cry of frustration goes up from many who are infuriated by geeks telling us that it’s all straight forward and just do it all online as it is intuitive. Intuitive - that’s rubbish, it’s just an excuse to not have any instructions. So well done ABTA on steering yourselves into this new digital world in a personalised and tailored manner. The travel industry is not just of great value to our economy, but also important to ensure that we all have that vital ingredient for the success of our finances - confidence. After all if we are feeling confident, we will book a
bigger and better holiday: and if we have a good holiday we come back with an air of greater confidence to face the rest of the year. Of course the great growth for this industry is going to be the older baby boomers as they work their way through an increasingly creaky retirement - so they will need us Saga Louts after all.
UK Banks - splitting and ring fencing There’s one thing that is certain, the next financial crisis will not be the same as the last one. However, that should not stop any prudent moves by the appropriately named PRA (Prudential Regulatory Authority) to put in place controls to further strengthen the system to try and prevent any recurrence. Their actions last week in strengthening capital requirement levels were perfectly understandable, but they do have to tread a careful line between discipline and departure. If however, the rules are deemed to be too restrictive then they will act as a disincentive for further investment in UK banks and encourage any new investment to go elsewhere. At the same time we still want to ensure that the new range of challenger banks are allowed and encouraged to bring in new capacity as well as more competition. With this development, the question of splitting banks’ investment banking arms away from the commercial banking areas should also be addressed. The merger of these two quite separate functions should never have been allowed, although I admit there are some areas which could survive in either camp, such as foreign exchange trading. To me history shows us a clear difference between the two and that is primarily a cultural one. One serves its clients primarily; the other serves itself to a greater extent. The Americans passed the Glass Steagall act in 1933 precisely to separate the two activities, after some similar dysfunctional behaviour by the banks of the day. Of course the most recent disasters can be traced back directly to its repeal under President Clinton in 1999, when the head of the Fed, Alan Greenspan said he had been assured by the investment banks that “they would act far more responsibly this time” - and the rest is history, and a painful history at that. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor Many congratulations for a decade in print and thank you for all your help with our local marketing and helping to promote local businesses Dream Doors

News “Residents of The Maldens and Coombe should keep their eyes open for the above symbol which will be appearing in local shops over the next few weeks. These are retailers who have given excellent service to their customers over several years, above and beyond what is normally expected. There are about fifteen nominations, and the winner will be decided at the Maldens and Coombe Heritage meeting held on 2nd December. The shops are located in many different areas, not just in the High Street, and have been nominated by our membership. The design shows a skep (form of beehive) and commemorates that it will be 150 years next year since that emblem was first used by the New Malden Local Government Board (forerunner of the council) to symbolize the industry of the area, and the logo of the Board.”

coming” which commemorates the heroic actions (and the ultimate sacrifice) of three Victoria Cross recipients of The Borough of Maldens and Coombe. It is approximately 76 pages and is priced £5.00 The book will be officially launched at the Farmers’ Market on 7th November (just ahead of Remembrance Sunday). People can, however, order in advance via our website maldensandcoombeheritagesociety.weebly. com/ (and then going to the Latest News page). Our previous book of residents’ recollections of New Malden throughout the years, entitled “ Monday was always Washday” is also still available, priced at £4.00 and, once again is available at the Farmers’ Market and on the website. Finally we have a selection of Christmas Cards depicting old views of New and Old Malden and these too will be available at the Market and on the website.
Diwali - Festival of Light Celebrations Councillor Roy Arora the Mayor of Kingston is hoping as many residents of Kingston, Surbiton and New Malden as possible will join in and celebrate Diwali (The Hindu Festival of Light) during the evening of Thursday 5th November. A co-ordinated programme of the switching on of each of the three town centre’s festive lights is planned for 5.30 p.m., signalling the commencement of entertainment and activities in the town centres of Kingston and Surbiton. In Kingston it is envisaged that there will be Indian food available in the Apple Market and in the town centre it is hoped to have indian dancers performing. In Surbiton there are plans to have activities in the railway station area for all ages The Mayor is hoping that as many people as possible will join in this celebration and that it will become an annual event. Congratulations to the Village Voice on reaching their tenth Anniversary. I am an immigrant to the area, as I married a local lady, but I really hail from a country far away, different language, culture, currency, and have had to adapt to your different ways. I come from a distant land called North London, and the chance to learn about the origins of New Malden from the excellent words of Robin Gill, has helped me to understand how the area has developed. The "View from the City" (Justin Urquhart Stewart) and "A Malden Man" (Raj Randhawa) are regular reads of mine and are always worthy contributors. Please keep up the good work! People 90th Birthday Ferrari Challenge September 19th was a beautiful warm sunny day. In the morning, I sat at home, fidgeting while I waited for my son to pick me up to take me to Dunsfold Aerodrome. He soon turned up, and by the time we got to our destination, my daughter and her husband and their children, and many friends had already arrived, so I felt very excited, and raring to go. There were many different makes of car lined up, and after signing in; I waited for my first drive, which was in the Ferrari. I didn’t go as fast as I would have liked as I thought the first lap was a trial run, but it was very enjoyable and I received 38 marks out of 40 for my performance. The next car was the Audi R8 “Super” when I put my foot down and just touched 80mph. This time I was rated 39 marks out of 40, WOW. The final drive was with a charming professional driver by the name of Edmonds, and when he took me for a spin, we reached a speed of 140mph.The video of me taken in the car revealed some very interesting facial expressions while the poor chap learned my life’s story
RELIABLE
which must have been my nerves. I had a fabulous time, and whilst most of the drivers were young, they all seemed to enjoy the experience. The most wonderful thing about the event was the fact that so many people had sponsored me or donated direct to the Royal Marsden cancer Charity. I would like to say “Thank You All So Much”. So far I have raised £2035* which is wonderful, but just in case someone would like to contribute to this worthy cause, the charity is accepting donations for the next two weeks. So again, a big “Thank You” from me, and of course, The Royal Marsden. Very Best Wishes Pat Farr

Gardening Autumn Planning and Planting Pippa Greenwood
There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing

are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. *Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

Recipe Spiced winter vegetable soup A hearty and warming soup made with seasonal winter root vegetables. Serve with thick slices of warm crusty bread for a filling lunch or supper. Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tsp medium curry paste 300g carrots, peeled and diced 250g swede, peeled and diced 2 large parsnips, peeled and diced 1.4 litre vegetable stock Crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps (see tip) and crushed coriander seeds, to garnish 1 Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste

and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. 2 Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 3 Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. 4 Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds. TIP To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper. Health Yoga for every body by Rachel Ridley
Yoga is for every body. If you can breathe you can do yoga. However, as a yoga teacher, the most common response I hear is, “Yoga?....I’m far too inflexible for that.” It’s like saying, “A bath?...I’m far too dirty!” Yoga, especially in our world full of social media, can seem as if it is just for young, bendy, slim women in fabulous outfits with the ability to handstand for hours. But yoga has very little to do with the physical shapes we make with our body. The poses do build strength and increase flexibility but the primary focus is the breath, becoming more mindful and observing the reactions in body and mind. These are accessible to everyone. A good teacher will offer modifications, props and adaptations to suit the students in the room.
Yoga for every body.

Yoga connects us back to ourselves - it rejoins the dots. You rediscover who you are and then take that with you off the mat and into the world. Yes it’s great exercise - it will help you get strong and feel great - but it also helps you get still, find peace, and reconnect with yourself. This sense of calm, connection and confidence stays with you long after you roll up your mat. Who couldn’t use a little more of that in their life? And as for being too stiff? In actual fact, being tight can be a benefit. It usually means you have more strength and allows you to maintain boundaries in a pose. So my advice, if you are feeling stiffer than you used to, is to get yourself to a yoga class - yoga will increase flexibility in both the mind and the body. If you constantly limit yourself, you will always be where you are today.

Altogether there were 12 trekkers, plus the Berbers and their hardy mules who carried all our luggage and water. On our journey we covered a total of 67 miles over 5 days, with the second day being the toughest trekking 20 miles during a 13-hour slog.
Genesis Research Trust by Jean Dalton
In May of this year, I took part in a Challenge for Genesis Research Trust. My reason for doing this was to raise much-needed funds into research for the prevention of problems arising during pregnancy. Problems highlighted by the startling figures that 1 in 18 births are premature, 1 in 4 births end in Miscarriage, and 1 in 200 babies are stillborn – All of which are frightening and entirely factual. Our fundraising challenges and efforts are not only focused on these issues though. Scientists and clinicians, guided by Professor Lord Robert Winston, are also looking closely at research into the prevention of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Ovarian Cancer and genetic diseases. The most recent (and physically demanding) fundraising challenge I took part in was trekking over the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. To take our place on this expedition, we all each had to work hard to raise a minimum of £2400 for the research trust. We all achieved this target and some of us even went over and above that figure, thanks to everybody’s generous donations and the interest we garnered into what we were doing. The challenge was 5 days trekking over Morocco’s famed Atlas Mountains, through landmarks like the ‘Stone Desert’ and the ‘Valley of the Roses’. The first two days of our adventure were mentally and physically draining, largely due to the sweltering temperatures, lack of shade and unforgiving terrain. During those first couple of difficult days we retired in the evenings to our humble tents. The aches and pains of attempting to rest on a thin mattress with stones poking through were immediately forgotten in the morning as the desert greeted you with amazing views of the sun rising, mountains in the distance, camels and mules grazing nearby. For someone who lives beside the A3, home felt so very far away! Despite the beauty of the desert and the warmth of the local Berber people guiding us, the purpose of our adventure was never far from my thoughts. It was one of the most amazing and personally challenging experiences of my life. There were times when I questioned what I was doing there, terrified of the next step because of the sheer drops flanking our path, or the strong currents in the rivers we had to cross, or the unrelenting and exhausting heat of the Moroccan desert. I was joined on my journey by some remarkable women, most of whom have had to deal with pregnancy-related issues, all wanting to do whatever they can to help prevention of these devastating conditions. We were thrilled to be accompanied by Kate Hardy, who works as a scientist conducting research in this area and was able to describe to us first hand how the money we were raising was being put to good use. Another valuable member of the team was Dr Hogh (based at Kingston Hospital), who kept our feet in trekking condition despite some particularly nasty blisters.

Every time I felt like I had used up the last of my strength, I thought about the wonderful support I have had over the past year from my friends who encouraged my training. I also remembered the incredible support shown by The New Malden Farmers Market and The New Malden Rotary Club with their very kind donations; The New Malden Leisure Centre and particularly Dominic McGinty for my training; My employer Karen of White and Hayward Estate Agents who supported all of my preparations for the trip. All of these people made a big impact on the money I managed to raise for this wonderful Charity. Genesis Research Trust is a Charity that was founded by Professor Lord Robert Winston, please look at their website for more information with the breakthroughs they are making. If you would like to check out the challenges taking place over the next couple of years, please visit: www.genesisresearchtrust.com

People Catherine Hancock We met Catherine Hancock, founder of Surbiton-based biscuit company Piped With Love, to find out about her local roots and how she’s making her mark in the baking world. Q: Hi Catherine. What is your connection to New Malden? A: I was born in New Malden in 1993 and lived on Rosebery Avenue. I went to the Christ Church schools before going on to Nonsuch in Cheam and then Tiffin Girls’ Sixth Form. My family moved to Surbiton in late 2013 and I now run my business entirely from there. Q: What happened after school? A: I studied for a Music degree at the University of Birmingham, specialising in oboe performance. Perhaps starting a biscuit company doesn’t seem like the most natural progression for a music graduate, but the musical skills I’ve learned are invaluable for running a business: self-discipline, creativity, confidence and, of course, good timing! Q: How did Piped With Love come about? A: At university I spent far too much time watching baking videos, reading food blogs and whipping up treats for my friends! After deciding not to follow the corporate route, I allowed myself a post-uni ‘gap year’ to see if I could create a niche business in a field that I truly love. My parents were a bit reluctant at first (mainly at losing the use of their kitchen!) but thankfully business has really taken off and everyone is now incredibly supportive.
friends and family. Other than that, I just really like eating biscuits! Q: What do you most wish you’d known when you started your business a year ago? A: I think it’s probably how difficult it is to say ‘no’ to people or turn down orders. However when you are doing it alone, you can’t spread yourself too thinly. I am not just baking the biscuits - but doing all of the administration, ordering supplies, designing and creating products, dealing with sales, marketing and social media and more, all whilst trying to find time to eat and sleep! I once heard someone joke that a perk of being your own boss is having the freedom to decide which 18 hours a day you work, and that’s certainly true at times. Q: How can we get hold of some of your biscuits? A: The business is now primarily online, so biscuits can quickly and easily be ordered from the new website. The Christmas shop has already been a big success (especially the ‘6 tins for the price of 5’ offer). On the website you can also find details of decorating masterclasses where you’ll have fun learning some of the tricks of the trade and take a tin of delicious biscuits home with you! www.pipedwithlove.com
Q: Why did you choose biscuits over other sweet treats? A: With the cupcake trend beginning to subside last year, I decided to focus on biscuits because of their huge potential for personalisation and variety. They can be posted anywhere and have a long ‘enjoy before’ date. Creating biscuits which celebrate special occasions and reflect the life and character of the recipient gives me fantastic job satisfaction, as well as many delighted customers. What I enjoy most is how many people, having received or given a tin, come back to order more for their To advertise email jenny@nmvv.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915
