Postcard from Crookhaven

I suppose I’ve always considered myself an early adopter when it comes to new technology. Whilst I never owned a brick like mobile phone, I did like to keep up to date with handsets, and was buying and selling shares (not always very successfully!) on my Nokia WAP phone back in 2001, before I progressed on to Palm Pilots. I recall friends declaring how anti-social mobile phones were and swearing NEVER to get one. Yeah, right! I also remember a colleague making a stand in a work meeting and sharing his view that ‘the internet is just a passing fad…’Really? My memory is blurred with what functionality became available when but I will admit to never foreseeing where we are with mobile technology now. This month’s editorial is being written in a field in South West Cork on our annual holiday to the tiny village of Crookhaven. Our mobile home is yet to enter the world of broadband but, thanks to the iPhone, it’s been business as usual. In between cows, boat trips, fresh crab (from Billy’s pub - yum), body boarding, walks, beaches and a wee bit of rain (well you have to have some to make visiting the cosy pubs such a pleasure), this month’s edition of the Village Voice has taken shape. Time will tell how my mother in law’s router will cope with the upload to the print company’s web site. Fingers crossed! I think I have now entered the world of flexible working. Anyway, as always, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

Community

New Malden Residents’ Association

Residents’ Association – Boring Huh!!!! Well Yes – it is some of the time. Committee Meetings, Meetings, with Councillors – Planning Meetings – Forms – Pages to wade through when you are dealing with any type of authority – a huge amount of words to get through when reading up on new proposed legislation. BUT – it can be stimulating, educational, empowering, surprising and an eye opener. We live in a Democracy don’t we?? Which means that as members of the public, we will be listened to and our views will be held in great respect by those who run the country and our own locality, and our opinions will be sought when policies and changes are to be made. WRONG!!! We have to fight to be heard by our Council, let alone Government, and we have to make sure that Councillors hear us loud and clear. If we don’t shout – they won’t hear. If we don’t make our voice heard,

we cannot have an input into any changes that affect our Community. Over the past years we have seen building developments that look like they have been drawn on the pack on the proverbial “matchbox”, a refurbished High Street that really was a disgrace, proposed developments that have taken no account of the infrastructure, a proliferation of Betting Shops (six now in total in New Malden), cleanliness that has been noticeable only by its absence, and “improvements” (for instance Tolworth and Kingston Market Place) that would be laughable if it were not for the huge amount of money spent on them, and not much notice taken of places like New Malden. We have been told endlessly over the past few years that we, as residents and rate/income tax payers will have a say in what happens. But as so often, it is only when the public’s outcry becomes so vociferous that peace and order may be breached, something, is done. Kingston Council in the past has largely ignored its residents (communication not seeming to be high on its agenda), but the tide is beginning to turn. Well – even though our Residents’ Association has not always been successful in its undertakings, we are becoming a force to reckon with. We have made useful contacts with Councillors, other Residents’ Associations, the National Organisation of Residents’ Associations and local Business people and we have had an input in some local undertakings. SO – don’t wait for someone else to do something about what bugs you, join us and do something with us, for us (all of us) and by us!!! New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents Association.... Please see left for joining details.

New Malden History What to do? by Robin Gill

Nowadays we have an incredible amount of entertainment available to us. Plays, opera, ballet, films, television, radio, music in various forms, games, the internet, all available in the privacy of our own homes, not to mention various sports and recreations in the great outdoors. We are spoilt for choice, eighty years ago it was more a question of making your own amusement, and people were happy doing just that. People will still say that they have nothing to do, and that they are bored, but either side of World War II, the population didn’t just sit indoors and moan about what Germany might do or about rationing, there was what was called the “community spirit”. What little food you had, (by ingenious methods) you made go

a long way, and you made sure any neighbours either old, bereaved, or just lonely were managing okay. Allotments sprang up on all available land, and we were encouraged to “dig for victory”. Nothing to watch Television began in November 1936, but you could count the number of receivers in Malden on the fingers of one hand (the receivers cost around 100 guineas [£105 today]). This was the equivalent of six months salary, so way outside most families. There was one channel, and programmes were broadcast on Monday to Saturday from 3pm -4pm and 9pm-10pm. BBC radio was divided between National and Regional programmes and contained talks, light and chamber music, variety shows, brass bands, plays and concerts. The BBC also broadcast events such as the opening of the new Forth road bridge and that years Charity Shield football match. Additionally there were many sports clubs in operation, the British Legion, political associations, the Grafton and New Malden Clubs, Horticultural Society, Oddfellows and Rechabites plus many youth groups both connected with local churches, and secular.

Look and learn When Malden and Coombe became a borough on 23rd September 1936, one job the council took on with relish was the education of the locals through talks and lectures. The lectures were free and held at the School Clinic in Westbury Road opposite the Baptist Church. The Mayor Charles Speirs was in charge, and the first one seems to have been about local history particularly Malden and Surrey led by Miss Marion Dale on 24th February 1937, sadly no details of this talk survive. The next lecture entitled “The Child and Nutrition” took place in April the same year, this time at the Wesley Hall (now the Methodist Church) again chaired by the Mayor, the speaker was Sir Percy Alden a former MP and social reformer, and very much in favour of the benefits of milk for school children. Free school milk would not become compulsory until 1944, later, it was withdrawn later first by Harold Wilson, and then by Margaret Thatcher. The lecture was followed by a 22 minute documentary film entitled “Enough To Eat?”

which examined the connection of poverty with malnutrition and the illnesses which could result from malnourishment ,narrated by Julian Huxley. This showed that even an affluent area like Malden could still have pockets of hardship. Unfortunately, the speaker, Sir Percy a great campaigner, was killed by a flying bomb in London seven years later while waiting for a bus. Vegetables for victory With the onset of war these lectures stopped, and information relayed to the people of Malden became more instructional and practical. For example the library in Kingston Road showed a film entitled “Gardens At War” not a documentary showing the difference between a British and a German garden, but a film showing how to grow more food in gardens and allotments. A large amount of open and park land had been turned over to allotments, and the population were encouraged to grow more vegetables at home. The film was in “natural” colour which was a novelty at that time, and the public were encouraged to bring their friends, as we were all in it together.

In Malden local demonstrations were held at 11am and 3pm at Woolworths in the High Street (now Poundland) and various Civic Cafes, together with Church and local Halls. In the latter part of the war, companies realised the advertising power of these demonstrations, and businesses like Cadburys and Birds started their presentations using their own products. Recreational values Of course, it was not all instructional items that the public were advised on. There was a garden party and fair in aid of the prisoners of war fund, held on Plough Green on 26th June 1943 opened by Mr CH Middleton (of BBC fame).Mr Middleton was one of the earliest gardeners featured by the BBC starting in 1931 and by 1940 attracted 3.5 million listeners. He was the wartime Alan Titchmarsh, and died from a heart attack outside his house in Surbiton in September 1945. In the same year as part of the “Holidays at Home” programme, two concerts were held at the Burlington Road Schools. Firstly “Operatic Memories” Grave and Gay by the New Malden Co-operative Musical Society,

and this was followed a week later by George Bernard Shaw’s play St Joan performed by the New Malden Co-operative Dramatic Group. As can be seen from the above, the Council placed a great emphasis on educating the people of Malden especially during the war years. Whilst it can be argued that they were only doing what was expected of them, and it made no difference to the outcome of the war, it is a fact that in times of stress the population looks to their leaders for guidance. In this small community, efforts were made to show a united home front, and to teach the people to help themselves. All the details for these events come from the collection of notices formerly displayed, and then retained by New Malden Library, and now held by the Kingston archives. Illustrations:

PART-TIME SECURITY BARRIER OPERATOR A security guard is required on a part-time basis to operate a two-arm electric traffic barrier installed by Kingston Council on the private Coombe Estate at the junction of Warren Road and Coombe Lane West. The hours of work are 4.30 to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. The holder of this position will be required to stand on the barrier island between the two arms for the 2 hour period to alleviate the problem of rat running traffic by turning away unauthorised vehicles. Authorised vehicles are identified by means of windscreen stickers. A gateman’s hut is provided. This position could suit a recently retired member of a security company or a retired police officer. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact Mr Mick Taviner, Secretary to the Coombe Estate Residents’ Association by email at: micktaviner@blueyonder.co.uk or telephone on: 020 8337 2766. Tudo Morris swims the channel for Momentum

New Malden resident Tudor Morris, 22, has achieved the incredible challenge of swimming the English Channel raising over £16,000 for Momentum, the local children’s charity www.moment-um.org, the cancer charity that supported him. The solo crossing on 27 July took Tudor 15 hours and 53 minutes, but prior to that, months of training and he says: “more mental grit and determination than I have ever had to give in one day”. Tudor, whose father is the owner of Tudor Williams department store in New Malden, took on the challenge after he was supported by Momentum as a child. He contracted leukaemia at the age of 13 and spent two years fighting the cancer which was thought to be terminal. But there was another poignant reason behind

Tudor’s challenge … it was in remembrance of his mother who tragically died from cancer when he was just 8 years old. Swimming the channel is considered to be the ultimate test of endurance, strength and stamina. More people have climbed Mt. Everest than have swum the channel. Tudor endured freezing temperatures, floating debris, sewage, jellyfish and 500 ton freight cargo boats on his challenge. He was stung by jellyfish on his ear, neck, shoulder and ankle! On the support boat were his father, Tudor’s girlfriend, his coach, pilot and co-pilot’s son and the official Channel Swimming Association verifier. Here is Tudor’s story, in his own words.... On July 27th I managed to become one of the few people who have successfully completed a solo crossing from England to France. It took me 15hrs and 53mins and more mental grit and determination than I have ever had to give in one day. We got up at 5am; I devoured a bowl of porridge, bananas and honey and left the house at 6am set for Dover. On the boat was my father John, my girlfriend Charlotte, my coach Fiona Southwell, our pilot Andy King, his co-pilot son James and the official Channel Swimming Association verifier, Mick. We all boarded the Louise Jane and set out from Dover harbour, around the coast to the official starting point. I was layered up with SPF 50+ sunscreen, lanolin and Vaseline in all the places that might chafe (yum). A stuffed Shrek toy was attached to the mast and watched over me. The boat stopped about 100m from the shore and I swam in, got onto the beach, clear of the water. I raised my arms as the support boats horn blew at 9:20am to signify the start of the swim. It took me a while to get back into the swing of things when I started. The first four – five hours were pretty choppy, and we had postponed the swim start from 1am to 10am for this reason – I didn’t want to have to struggle through choppy waters at the end of the swim when I would already have been so tired, so we started going through it with fresh arms. Initially I started swimming on the left hand side of

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

the boat, but my coach Fiona made the call to switch me round to the right so I would get some shelter from the choppy water. I noticed after about an hour that there were a lot of jellyfish in there with me. Now, before then I had actually never been stung once, despite countless hours of training in open water and many encounters with jellyfish. Well, that didn’t last very long in the channel – I was stung first of all on the back of my ear, neck and shoulder (when I swam straight through one) and again a few hours later on my ankle. The thing about the channel is that it’s such a mind bogglingly long distance to think about swimming, that you have to take it in small chunks – for me that was every 30mins when I stopped to tread water and feed. The food I ate consisted of soft and easy to swallow things such as Jaffa cakes and bananas, as well as taking on board a warm carbohydrate infused drink. This process takes about 30 seconds before I’m off swimming again. People often ask me what I think about when I’m swimming, and the honest answer is whatever is on my mind. I get into a rhythm where I’m not thinking about my swim technique because it becomes muscle memory and I’m running on ‘autopilot’. In that time my mind is pretty much free to wander so I will think about anything from doing mental arithmetic in my head, thinking about being in front of a warm fire and

of course thinking about drawing because I’m so very arty. Surprisingly, throughout the whole swim I was actually only sick once. I was happily swimming along before I felt it coming up. I stopped dead in the water and my crew looked worried over the side of the boat at me – “do you have cramp?” Fiona asked. I looked up at them, let out an almighty burp and projectile vomited a stream of hot peaches, banana and carbodrink about 2-3 feet. The seagulls above became excited at this prospect of a fresh meal. I remarked to the guys on the boat what a “nice normal sport” this was and carried on swimming.

And as I’ve told you about that bodily function, I will spare you the details of what else I had to do in there (naturally I waited until I was in French waters though), but let’s just say that the seagulls were a bit less keen on that. I kept swimming through the rough choppy water, until it turned calm and became much easier to swim in. This must have been about halfway through my swim. I had a look around during one of my feeds and I realised that I had reached a point when I couldn’t see Dover, but I couldn’t yet see France either – just an expanse of water all around me in every direction as far as I could see. Still, I didn’t want to dwell on that depressing thought too much, so I just got on with it. At 10hrs in Fiona got in the water and swam beside me to keep my pace up as I’d slipped into a bit of a relaxing ‘plod’ – she had to make sure that I got enough speed up and covered enough ground to make the tide before it turned, otherwise I would have been stuck in the middle of the channel. 13hrs in, the sun was setting and my swim progressed into the night. Here’s where things got pretty miserable. I am always kept in the dark as to how long I have been swimming for, how long I have left, what distance I have covered and all those sorts of things. I find the lack of information better because that way it isn’t a burden on my mind, and I can purely focus on the task at hand. Looking up I could now see the lights of France on the horizon – unbeknownst to me I had missed the last tide and my pilot was expecting me to be blown right off course and completely out to sea. I swam my heart out for those last three hours. Every feed I made I dropped back a huge distance, it really was like I was staying in the same place. I was pushed right across from the lighthouse at Cap Griz Nez in towards Sangatte. I couldn’t see anything anymore – the familiar beacon of the lighthouse that had been beckoning me in was now so far to my right that it was out of view. The only thing I could see was an expanse of darkness in front of me and below me, but I couldn’t let that get me down. By this point I was swimming so hard that I couldn’t get enough oxygen in breathing every 3rd stroke (breathing on both sides), so I had to switch over to breathing on my left hand side and looking up at the boat every other stroke. Everyone on board was shouting that I had nearly made it, that I was so close. I powered on through some pretty nasty pain in my shoulder. For those last 3hrs, I had to picture my mother swimming next to me and keeping me going. I kept thinking in my head that there was no way I would be able to keep up this pace for much longer. My lungs were on fire, I was wheezing breathing as deeply as I could, trying to get the oxygen

in. There was such a huge build-up of lactic acid in my muscles that I was cramping with every movement, but I couldn’t stop and stretch because the tide would just knock me back. I saw the guys on board starting to get the dingy ready to escort me in the last few hundred meters to the French shore – the main beam light was shining onto a cliff face that I knew I just had to touch, and it would all be over. I saw the light on the cliff and I was just so tired that I kept looking up and making sure I was still getting closer and closer. The dingy was next to me now with the co-pilot and my coach Fiona shouting words of encouragement at me. I realised I was there, I had made it... I put my feet down when I was in the water and felt sand beneath them, I shuffled onto the shore, where I could barely stand and raised my arm up to wave to the boat. I was clear of the shore, and I had made it to France. I collapsed on my hands and knees and slid back into the water and paddled out to the dingy. I was too exhausted to climb back into the boat so I had to hang off the side. I got back to the boat and was so relieved that it was over. It took the combined efforts of Dad, Charlotte and Fiona to get me dried and dressed into multiple layers of hoodies/hats/gloves/ski socks, and I just fell asleep on the deck of the boat whilst we motored back to Dover. Most people sleep on it and pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

View from the City La “less than belle” France by Justin Urquhart Stewart

It’s easy to make simplistic comparisons, but this year I found a stark difference in attitude between what I saw in the French economy as opposed to that of Perfidious Albion on the other side of La Manche (‘The Sleeve’). Naturally all citizens are usually quite cynical over their leaders and especially those who these days seem to be guided by their spin “Meisters” in managing their media coverage. In France the leaders’ media story was obviously going to be dominated by the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, as well as the liberation of Provence and Paris. This provided a perfect platform for the President to look statesmanlike and a natural leader for the nation. Sadly though this was not the case. President Hollande is not a very charismatic man - although possibly his private life implies he may have some hidden attractions not obviously visible to the rest

RELIABLE

of us. From standing on the flight deck of the French aircraft carrier -at least they have got one and it even has planes on it! The mighty if somewhat ageing (eventually commissioned five years late in 2001) Charles de Gaulle (was to have been called the Richelieu – a far better name), to unveiling various memorials to the fallen, I am afraid he did not cut much of a figure. If ever there was an impersonation of a bemused actuary trying to find a lost pencil, then this was it. Meanwhile the rest of the French cabinet, including the prime minister, were being despatched around the nation with no “grande vacances” for them but rather endless television interviews trying to explain away the dire economic figures. Even the weather joined in, with window rattling thunderstorms and a cold mistral bringing the worst weather for most of the country in years heralding the latest domestic growth figures hitting Zero% and the broader Eurozone still in a disinflationary spiral. Hollande is not popular. The UK’s picture though does stand in stark contrast with growth figures being revised upward, employment figures improving and the business

start-up levels seeming far more confident than before. We may still be cynical over our leaders, but certainly the economic backdrop has been very different and, for much of the summer, even reflected by an improvement in our weather for a change. However as we are now in the dog days of the summer and the holidays end, we can wipe away the last of the sunscreen and start to look at what is next for the economy. The next month is going to be dominated by the emotion of the Scottish referendum, but leaving that aside it has been the rather tedious discussions around the eventual rise in interest rates that has dominated much of the commentary. Frankly the guesses over the timing of interest rates are a fairly useless conversation as the Governor has made it quite clear that they will go up when he thinks the economic indicators show that it would be prudent to do so. All we need to understand is that they are going up and that any move is likely to be quite small - even as low as 0.25%, but that the direction has now changed. So what can we draw from this? Firstly anyone or anything that is affected by the rates will be impacted. Thus personal spending will be affected by those running higher debt levels; mortgage costs

will rise and have a similar impact, and companies running debt will pay more. From this therefore we can probably deduce that there is unlikely to be any asset value crash as a result of a small rate rise, but there is every likelihood that there will be a brake being applied, at least for the moment, on certain key areas - especially around housing. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

Remembering David Ives

David was born in Malden on 15th May 1937. His parents and family had moved from Barnes in 1932, and his father Thomas and uncle formed a partnership (Ives Bros) who bought some land on the Fullbrooks estate off the Malden Road. The firm built most of the houses in Fullbrooks Avenue close to the main road, and some in The Glebe and Perry How. David remembered the family built air raid shelter n the garden of number 6 (Maeldune) where he said he spent a great deal of the war, and he particularly remembered the doodlebugs one of which badly damaged the Co-op in the Plough Parade in 1944. David attended The Study in Thetford Road before joining the Mercers School in Holborn in 1945 then onwards through National Service and Oxford. A few years later in 1962 he was elected onto The Maldens And Coombe Borough Council for Malden Manor ward (now Old Malden), and remained a councillor following the establishment of the Royal

Borough Of Kingston Upon Thames in 1964 and only retired from the council when he and his family left the area in 1972. He had married Jean Jessett at St John The Baptist Church Old Malden on 24th March 1965 the day after the last meeting of the old borough council. David campaigned strongly on a number of issues such as tree preservation, off street parking (a real problem back in the 70s as it is today especially near to the railway stations), and the preservation of grammar schools. He was also instrumental in saving the New Victoria Hospital when it was threatened with closure. This involved David and his wife Jean in fundraising together with help from local businesses at the time, all pulling together to save the New Vic. David who died on 4th July, leaves his wife Jean and two daughters. His death also severs the last remaining link to the old Malden and Coombe Borough Council.

Gardening

Credit Crunch Gardening by Pippa Greenwood

If you feel that your garden has become an expensive hobby, check-out my top tips for Credit-Crunch Gardening. Apply for an allotment. An allotment opens up a whole new opportunity to grow almost unlimited food at very little cost, get exercise without paying for the gym, and learn a lot from your neighbouring plot holders. Gardeners are a very generous bunch, so don’t feel embarrassed to ask, friends, neighbours, or fellow allotmenteers for cuttings or seedlings of plants that you have admired. It is part of what gardening is all about. Collect softish, deciduous leaves to make free soil improver. Just make a ‘cage’ from galvanised wire with posts at the corners or cram the leaves into bin liners and puncture a few holes. Make the most of every bit of fruit and veg that your garden or allotment produces. Make jams, chutnies, jellies and of course bottle or freeze just about anything else. Make your own wasp trap. Use a jam jar part filled with stale jam, mixed with water and topped with tin foil with a few holes in it made using a pencil. Many local councils offer really good value composters and compost bins. Better still, if you’re at all handy with the hammer and nails, create your own from old pallets or floor boards. Fill a flowerbed with colour by sowing it with hardy annual seeds – some can be collected from existing plants, others from packet seed, often at under £1 per packet. Ask your local pub to give you any stale beer from the driptrays and use it as slug bait. Use an old plastic beaker part filled with beer and placed so that the rim is about 1cm above soil level in a slug and snail prone area. Enjoy some wild food. Many garden plants are edible, and don’t forget the old favourites such as hedgerow blackberries - great for crumble, stewed with some apple or for making into bramble jelly. Many fruits sold in the supermarket come in smart, clear-plastic trays, which can be used as miniature seed trays, and most even come with a clear plastic top, the perfect mini propagator lid. - Growing your own vegetables really can save you a packet. Right now you can order in seed for crops, and onion sets and garlic for crops early next summer. Then early in the year start planting potatoes and sowing seed. Look after your garden tools. Store them in a dry shed or garage, wipe over any metal parts with an oily rag to keep rust at bay and they’ll last years longer.

36

- Invest in a few raspberry canes. This has to be the best money saving crop, as they are expensive in the shops. Once established autumn fruiting varieties yield heavy crops and can give you ‘posh’ fruit....for just pennies. The garden furniture is probably the most costly item in your garden and statistics show it’s what gardeners spend most money on replacing. Remove washable seat-pads and cushions first, wash and dry these and then cover the furniture up or move it into a shed or garage if possible. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides.

Poirot returns to the stage in Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee. A quintessential English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earthshattering formula. Arriving at the estate just moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery and deception amid the estate’s occupants. That man is Hercule Poirot. In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time and the only fictional character ever to receive a full-page obituary in the New York Times. Recipe

Courgette quiche There’s an abundance of home grown courgettes in the shops at the moment – or you may have some growing in your garden. Make the most of them with this tasty quiche which can be served warm or cold. Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes, plus chilling FOR THE PASTRY 225g plain flour 100g lightly salted butter, chilled and cubed 1 medium egg yolk beaten FOR THE FILLING 1 tbsp olive oil 3 courgettes, 1 sliced and 2 chopped 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 75g mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 3 medium eggs 150ml milk 100ml crème fraiche 50g mature Cheddar cheese, finely grated 1 tomato, thinly sliced 2 tsp dried Italian mixed herbs

1 To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add a pinch of salt and the cubed butter and rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 2 Add the egg yolk and 2-3 tbsp ice cold water and mix with a round bladed knife until the mixture begins to stick together, adding a little more water, if needed. Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead for just a few seconds on a lightly floured surface until just smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. 3 Roll out the chilled pastry and use to line a 20cm round metal flan tin. Prick the pastry base all over with a fork and chill the in the fridge for 15 minutes. Line the pastry case with baking paper and fill with

baking beans then bake blind on the hot baking sheet for 10-15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and cook for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. 4 Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and fry the courgette slices for 1-2 minutes until just beginning to soften. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside on kitchen paper. 5 Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the shallots, mushrooms and garlic for 5 minutes then add the chopped courgettes and fry for a further 1-2 minutes, stirring until just softened. 6 Spoon the courgette and mushroom mixture into the pastry case. Beat together the eggs, milk, crème fraiche and Cheddar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Slowly pour into the pastry case over the courgette mixture. 7 Arrange the fried courgette slices and tomato slices on top of the filling and sprinkle with the Italian mixed herbs. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the filling is set and golden. Serve warm or cold with salad.

The Better Life Pump Ups the Volume by Derek Thompson

This year, our aim was self-sufficiency in water for the garden. The addition of a Rainwater Hub - fixed to the wall and intersecting a downpipe (never underestimate the value of a competent neighbour) - means that we now have a gravity-fed system of connected water butts. Like many homes these days we’re on a water meter, so it makes economic as well as eco sense. Our back up system is a subterranean tank at the rear of the house, which - fortunately for us - was a present to the previous owners from their grown-up children. (Sometimes chocolates, flowers or socks just aren’t enough!) The only downside is that you have to prime the top chamber with water each time and then pump like billyoh until the scraping sound stops and the spout gurgles with water. And then away you go. Although, I have to say, Anne humming the Popeye theme while I pump cast-iron doesn’t add much to the experience. Recently we noticed that the pump needed more priming even though it was delivering less water. My reactive solution was to impersonate Stephenson’s Rocket until the pump shrieked in pain. Luckily, taking the pump apart was a job I could actually do for myself, thanks to my trusty antique mini wrench (a £1 bargain at a local car boot sale). To be fair, the warped shaft was both not my fault and my fault - like a Zen riddle. Specifically: I didn’t manufacture the inferior quality pump shaft, but I had bought it online because it’d seemed like a bargain. “There’s a blacksmith down on the industrial estate,” Anne revealed, as I looked on - not for the first time - in awe. My admiration faded a little when she added, “And we’d better buy a proper gasket as well, while we’re about it.” I always get a thrill at meeting craftspeople. Not only are they doing something that I can’t (which could cover anything beyond growing mint and writing unpublished novels), but they are also artisans with a heritage. The suitable burly blacksmith shook his head in dismay as I handed him the warped shaft. I felt though I’d insulted his profession. He told us that he’d made a few castiron pump shafts recently and he liked to make them individually. Now, you don’t get that at your local DIY store. Next on Anne’s list was the gasket, which entailed a visit to a leather outlet. The old-timer behind the counter, who, frankly, looked a little leathery himself, gave me a withering smile when I meekly passed over the ailing gasket. He seemed to take a shine to us though, recommended that he manufacture a new gasket from quality hide, and then tried unsuccessfully to sell me a leather hat and motorcycle belt combo. Alas, I was never

54

born to be wild though - born to bewilder, perhaps. A week or so later, we collected the parts and I redeemed myself by putting the pump back together. I’m no expert, but I’d say the pump is now working brilliantly. We’ve learned valuable lessons too - the benefits of using local craftspeople, how buying cheaply can be a false economy, and that my feet can’t touch the road on a standard Harley. Fortunately for me, my eco-bike suits me down to the ground. A Malden Man Local dining

by Raj Randhawa A couple of years after we movd to New Malden, the recession hit our shores and rippled through our high street. We lost some established retailers including Blockbusters, Woolies and Dreams - as well as some smaller shops who were forced to close. In return, their replacements have included Poundland, more charity shops and that random bargain shop that moved into the Woolworths site before taking over the even larger Dreams store; with their oversized stuffed lions and glittery iPhone covers. The general look and feel of New Malden High Street has changed markedly and

anyone driving into New Malden via the Fountain roundabout was greeted by the giant cut-price store announcing a never ending sale. Not the best advert for the area! Over the years there have been endless rumours that Pizza Express is coming to New Malden, which most residents are very excited about. The word on the street now is that the old Dreams store will be taken over by a huge high street food retailer, but it’s not Pizza Express. It’s none other than the Portuguese grilled chicken chain- Nando’s, which is great news for chicken lovers and Peri Peri addicts alike, but also for the area as a whole. And the word on the street is that Pizza Express will indeed follow. The presence of well known brands on a high street can have a significant impact on an area, with knock-on effects attracting further investment in to the High St and the local area from other well-known brands. So, things are looking up for New Malden and hopefully we’ll be seeing even more retailers

replacing the empty shops we still have to put up with. The other great news is that Tudor Williams are in the midst of a massive £1m refurbishment which again bodes well for our high street. I just hope someone buys the poor eCosway shop next to Costa Coffee. If there’s one thing that worries me a little about the introduction of new restaurant chains, it’s their effect on our very own local restaurants. Take Al Forno, it’s a local favourite and rightly so, but what will happen to Al Forno when Pizza Express come tossing their pizza bases? Or how about the Glasshouse and the consistently great food they serve up to local punters? These restaurants might well lose some market share, which is a great shame. In all honesty, I’m sure we’ll be taking the kids to Pizza Express, simply because they love it. But, we’ll also make sure our loyalty remains with the likes of the Glasshouse and Al Forno and we’ll continue eating there, simply

because they are local businesses and we should look after our own. If we want them to stay, we have to support them. Overall things are on the up for New Malden. With more property development, house prices on the rise and potentially a new town square being discussed by local councillors for the Cocks Crescent site, these are exciting times for our community.
