Welcome to our August edition Dear All,
Wasn’t the weather in July absolutely fabulous? We managed weeks of endless sunshine and it certainly took the stress out of event planning with gazebos being used for shade as opposed to keeping the rain off! Unfortunately the dog show was cancelled this year due to the heat wave, with temperatures forecast to hit 30 degrees on the day. Heat stroke is a relatively common occurrence in the dog, which can be fatal and although many people had put a lot of hard work in preparing for the show, the welfare of the dogs had to be our primary concern. Peter and his team will however be back next year, hopefully with our more usual summer weather for what is always an enjoyable afternoon. Finally, the “100 Years of World Class Aircraft “ exhibition is coming to New Malden Library from Saturday 3rd to Saturday 10th August. This is an exciting exhibition of aircraft models, paintings and historic photographs, with slideshows and talks. It includes a children’s area with a colouring competition and great prizes making it an ideal place to visit during the school holidays. I hope you enjoy our August edition. Korean Festival Saturday 17th August
The Korean Festival is to be held on Saturday the 17th of August 2013. This year, ‘TOGETHER’ has been chosen as the theme to promote togetherness within communities and global friendship. A wider variety of cultural activities and performances will be showcased than in previous years. Korean music and dance will be complimented by performances from other cultures including Africa and Nepal. Also this year there will be a greater emphasis on traditional Korean folk games, giving you an opportunity to experience Korean culture. The Festival is being organised by the Korean Residents Society and sponsored by Korean National Tourism Organisation, Samsung, Hyundai, plus local businesses. The festival is to commemorate the Liberation of Korea and to help bridge the gap between Korean members and local members of our community. The Korean Festival, previously attended by 10,000 people is one of the largest festivals in London as well as Europe. This year’s festival has particular significance for the Free Trade Agreement between the E.U and Korea, which has been effective since July 2011, creating a platform for extensive communication between cultures. The Korean Residents Society has invited a number of Korean companies and local enterprises to promote their products and raise their brand awareness, bringing variety to the cultural event. Entertainments on that day include Liberation Day & Festival Opening Ceremony, British Veterans’ parade, Korean traditional music and dance, Martial Arts performance, African Drumming, Korean Brass quintet, Special guests such as Traditional Nepalese Dance, K Pop Dance and Raffle prize draw ( A return ticket to
South Korea for a first prize) Also Beer garden and Kids Fun Zone will be running through the whole day. Mr Christopher Kwon, Chairman of Korean Residents Society in the UK says that he is very delighted to welcome not only Koreans but also local communities to this great event. Bona Shin, Festival Director says ‘ I hope this event helps us all to understand different cultures and to build up positive and active relationship within the communities.’ VVoice

Charity Big Hair Cut
On Sunday 14th July I had my Big Hair Cut for the Little Princess Trust, which gives wigs to children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or who have alopecia because of other illnesses. I had 30cm cut off which is enough to make a really good wig. I was looking forward to having short hair so that it will be cool for when we go on holiday to France and Focus (our church holiday). I hope a girl or boy will
be able to get a great wig for them so that they can be happy with their hair too. Thanks to my family, friends at ballet, church and school as well as my neighbours we have raised £748.91, which is enough money to make 2 wigs! New Malden History Pottering around Dickerage by Robin Gill Who or what is a dickerage? The first reference I have come across is from 1574 which when detailing land in the Norbiton area mentions a rithe (small stream) leading into Dickeridge. This seems to be a small parcel of land of about seven acres around 1750 and shrunk to four acres in 1833. One early definition suggests this may be classed as poor land. Indeed today we still say that if things aren’t good, they are “a bit dicky”. Again, dicker also used to be a multiple of ten, so maybe the land was originally ten acres. Still, the land can’t have been that bad, as until 1935 practically the only building in the northern stretch of Dickerage Lane was a farm. Houses had been built at the southern end by the late 1870s with some of the first occupants being the Willard family, whose children fought in the Boer War (see Village Voice Nov 2010). The tale of Mr Warne Dickerage Road was certainly laid out by 1917, because that is the year William Fruing Warne and family moved into number two. It was a step down for the family who had lived at 25 Lovelace Road in Surbiton previously. The three children hated the house which, although reasonably near Richmond Park was much smaller than the house in Surbiton. They were too young to understand the circumstances behind the move. The name may ring a bell with some of you. If I mention that William’s father was called Frederick who started a publishing business in 1865. He retired in 1894 turning over control to his three sons William, Harold, and Norman. In 1901 the company received a copy of a book which had been privately published called “The Tale Of Peter Rabbit” by a lady called Beatrix Potter. They rejected it at first, but when it was resubmitted with some illustrations they became interested, and finally agreed to publish it in 1902, so beginning a relationship that was to last for over forty years until Beatrix’s death in 1943. She produced twenty three “tales” for the company plus other books. Beatrix dealt almost exclusively with the youngest of the brothers, Norman, and they became so close that they became engaged in1905, but the engagement was short-lived as Norman died of leukaemia a month later. hard labour at Wormwood Scrubs. William, who was left in charge of the company, had to sell practically everything including jewellery, and his lovely house in Surbiton. The strain of everything proved too much in the end for William and he died at home in Dickerage Road on February 11th 1928 of a heart attack. Today Warne, part of Penguin Books, regularly republishes the books for a new generation of young readers, and first editions sell for thousands of pounds. Time gone by 1928 was also the year that the Skinner family arrived to run Dickerage Farm, they stayed there until 1931 before moving to Hoppingwood (the farm on the by-pass near to Kingston Vale), and then the Robin Hood Dairy until the outbreak of the 2nd World War. The family had come from London and the two boys Geoffrey and Leslie loved the countryside. As can be seen from the photograph Dickerage was still a lane not yet connected to Dickerage Road. Dickerage Farm was sold in 1935, and the area developed for housing, although some of the farmland was retained in the form of the recreation ground. A family of perrenials Living at one of the early houses in Dickerage Lane (no 6) were the Lavender family. James the father had
died in 1928 aged 84 leaving his widow Mary Ann. She survived him by nearly 40 years dying in 1968 aged 99, still living in the same house. The Lavenders could claim to be Britain’s healthiest family. At the end of the Second World War there were 16 members of the family including the mother, with a combined age of 902. None of the children lived at home, but were close by. Mary had married Jimmy (James) when she was nineteen and he was forty three. He was a widower with six children, and his eldest son Joseph was nearly three years older than his would be step mother. James and Mary Ann subsequently had ten children themselves, of which nine survived into adulthood. Mary Ann had 20 grandchildren, and countless great grandchildren. Joseph was still working aged 80 in the boiler house of

Dickerage Lane School. The school had been opened in 1911 to combat a growing need for spaces for the children of the area. It was purely an infants school. Erected shortly after the school in Burlington Road when the number of infants in the Malden area without places, was approaching 200. It consisted of a large central hall around which were grouped six large classrooms. All rooms were equipped with adequate lighting and ventilation, and substantially furnished with desks, chairs and cupboards. There was a large cloakroom where clothes could be dried in wet weather, although the large playground was equipped with a shelter from any rain. It was hoped that the road would be made up enabling the children to have a safe journey to school. He always did like a flutter One resident of Dickerage Road received an unexpected surprise at the beginning of 1966 when he won £275,235 on the football pools. The pools were the National Lottery of their day, and many people dreamed of “coming up” with the eight draws on Littlewoods “treble chance”. The win is equivalent to over £5 million in today’s money, and Mr Frank Wall was the lucky recipient of a cheque presented by the actress June Thorburn at Grosvenor House in Park Lane in front of the massed ranks of cameramen of the press. Mr Wall and his wife Ellen had lived in the same council house numbered 109 for 35 years, paying rent of 49 shillings a week (in 1966). He was then aged 62, and earned £16 week making bread. He had always spent 2/6 (12½ pence) a week on the pools, and in the last weekend of 1965 had predicted all nine draws that occurred in the matches played. Both gave up their jobs; Mrs Wall had worked in the canteen of Adams and Adams in Dickerage Lane, and Mr Wall had worked for Coombes Bakery in Coombe Road. Starting there when he left school at 15, Mr Wall often worked the night shift, and was actually in bed when the representative from Littlewoods called. Mr Wall was well known at “The Brewster” at The Triangle where he played cribbage. He had never had a bank account, preferring to save at the post office, but because he had to deposit the cheque, he called into Martins Bank in Kingston to open an account. Of course they knew who he was, and he was given first class service. He made a withdrawal of £200 straight away, and checked he had been given the correct amount in the bank. His first purchase was an overcoat costing 17 guineas. Mr and Mrs Wall hoped the money would make them happier; all Mrs Wall wanted was “an upright Hoover and a lovely bunch of flowers”. They gave their three children £20,000 each, and the Walls had always wanted a house on the south coast. Of course there
were drawbacks, and they received a lot of begging letters, which they burnt in the back garden. Mr Wall bought his house near Bournemouth costing £8,800, put £1,000 in trust for each of his seven grandchildren, and invested the remainder. He vowed to keep on betting on horse racing and greyhounds, and to continue doing the pools every week, because as he said “You never know your luck”. But, spare a thought for Mr Frank Wall of 46 Glebe Gardens New Malden, who wrote to the Surrey Comet stating that he had no connection to “the gentleman who has won the pools”. The unfortunate Mr Wall had received so much correspondence on the matter, he felt he would have to employ a secretary to deal with it. He ended his letter with a plea “to respect the privacy of a gentleman who just happens to have the same name”. A man with all the hassles, and none of the benefits of good fortune. View from the City Getting real value out of the Royal Mail by Justin Urquhart Stewart Now I agree that RM should be brought back into private ownership, if only to get it away from the interfering politicians who have used and abused it over the years. It was almost twenty years ago that Heseltine tried and failed to get the beast freed and it was seen then as being a ‘privatisation too far’. Of course, this was before email and the internet and so RM was suffering from aggressive and effective competition from the Dutch and even the Malaysian mail services, as junk mail was redirected through their now far more competitive companies. RM had no answer to this except to be seen as almost a dying business as volume was taken away and an unreformed cost base rotted the value from within. Now we are in a different era where the letter post has declined even more but the true value lies within the parcel delivery area, as internet shopping has delivered an unexpected boom and boon. I find it sadly amusing on Saturday mornings to stand watching husbands queue up at the local sorting office to collect their electronically and instantaneously ordered goods, probably all taking far longer than if they just gone to John Lewis in the first place. However, what this means is that RM these days probably has more attraction to Amazon rather than anyone else as they seem to increasingly dominate the online ordering of sundry goods. When it comes to the float though - oh dear have we really learnt nothing. Are we really going to go through the expensive (especially when you look at all the marketing that will be accompanying it) process of a popular public share offering? We know from previous experience that ‘popular share ownership’ didn’t work in creating a mass movement of public ownership. What it did create was a mass movement of share

punting on a few stocks ‘priced to go’. I have mentioned this before, but here is the perfect opportunity to resolve everyone’s issues with regards to handling state owned assets in a way that can be seen as being both cost effective and efficient, provides the government with its cash, frees the business to operate away from state control, and gives ownership in a fair and responsible manner to those who wish to participate. With a value of something in the region of £23bn, here is the first valuable asset which could be transferred into the UK’s own Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF). I say the first as I have mentioned before a host of other smaller value assets sitting in the government’s family silver caddy, which could then be also added to our SWF. This would therefore enable investors to invest into a portfolio of companies which the SWF would be able to manage effectively as an investment manager of a longer term private equity business. It could buy and sell stakes as it thought fit and the underlying shareholders would benefit from the successful operation of this portfolio of companies over the years. This would avoid the messy and fraught with danger route of trying to rush some of these asset sales in a

manner determined by the government’s short term need for cash rather than good evaluation of market timing for the benefit of the business. At that point we could then add some or all of the other assets as the government needs to transfer them and achieve a more managed sale over time. These could include part of the holdings of RBS and Lloyds, as well as some of the more esoteric assets like the Met office, Urenco ( the nuclear processor in which the government has a one third stake) and the Student Loan Book. To offer the citizens of Britain a share or unit in a fund of national assets would be a far more attractive offer and one which would be seen to provide better longer term value for investors, rather than just a quick ‘pump and dump’ share sale. However, why not then take this further? Why not endow this SWF with a small stream of value from our energy assets, whether from fracking or from our now mature oil and gas fields? With this income stream you could then give the SWF a mandate for investment in UK business at all levels. Have we not heard the bleatings for a bank for small business (if you support the notion that SMEs are at the core of UK business)? Then here is your funded vehicle to enable this to take place. So let’s have Royal Mail deliver something really valuable - not just letters and parcels, not just a share flotation, but a strategic investment structure for the UK and its citizens. Mencap goes from strength to strength It’s going to be a busy few months for Kingston Mencap. We have a packed calendar of events for people in the borough who have learning disabilities, and their families - take a look at our website, www. kingstonmencap.co.uk to see what’s on. Coming up soon is our annual Senior Party on 14th September. A great themed event (wear red and blue!) at the United Reformed Church, New Malden, where our members can relax and enjoy a great night out, listening to the fab music of the band B.L.O. Tickets cost just £5 each for members (for details on how to join, see below). As befits a charity with bags of energy we work hard to raise funds, and we will be having a fundraising flag day on 26th/27th October, so look out for our volunteers at Tolworth Marks & Spencer. We run three leisure clubs for our members.

Xpression is our youth project for teenagers at Searchlight Community Centre. It’s on 7pm-9pm, Tuesdays, term time. There’s lots of fun to be had including football, art and crafts and games. For those aged 19 to 30, there’s Future Friends every other Thursday, based at the Canbury Pavillion in the summer. It’s a great way to make new friends and take part in activities like bowling, dancing and if you’re feeling brave, karaoke. Finally there’s Seekers for adults aged over 18, which meets every Monday evening at Burlington Primary School in New Malden, 7pm-9pm. You can meet new people, have a chat and take part in a wide range of activities including a monthly disco, art and crafts, bingo and cooking. As if that’s not enough there’s a drop-in every Saturday, 12-3pm at Searchlight which has great activities like boccia, badminton, craft, as well as providing lunch. There’s also a carers’ group which invites a speaker to come and talk on learning disability issues bi-monthly. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Raleigh House, Nelson Road, New Malden. Being a member of Kingston Mencap costs only £5 a year and on top of the clubs there’s a newsletter as well as exciting social events. Fire Safety
Fire Officers in the RBK have become particularly concerned at emerging evidence which shows a growth in ad-hoc “back garden developments” which sees sheds and other unsuitable buildings, such as garages and industrial units, being rented out as accommodation. The problem has come to be known as “beds in sheds”. Large numbers of people are living in garages, derelict buildings and industrial premises, with little separation between sleeping accommodation and the workplace. Across London fire-fighters have also encountered people living in a church basement, a bin room and a garage workshop, which was being used to strip down cars for spares. Local housing authorities are the lead agency on this problem, but fire crews do help too. When the Brigade identifies unsuitable premises that are being used as temporary accommodation, it can use powers under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to address immediate risks by prohibiting or restricting the use of the premises. Tell tale signs that a building might be being lived in illegally include:
• Domestic rubbish being left outside “empty” commercial buildings • Buildings which have been empty for a period suddenly occupied with no sign of commercial activity • Windows of commercial properties covered by sheets, cardboard or domestic ‘decorative’ curtains to keep out light. • People entering late at night • The building’s electricity supply being wired up to external power sources such as street lamps. Please be vigilant and inform the RBK local council housing team or London Fire Brigade if you see signs that disreputable landlords are trying to profit from people living in dodgy developments, that are clearly not meant to be inhabited.

Spotlight on Ann Brightwell
I am a member of the New Malden & Coombe
Heritage Group and as part of a project on past recollections have been involved in obtaining details of Ann Brightwell formerly Ann Packer who was a PE Teacher at Coombe Girls School in 1964/5 and whilst there won a Gold and Silver medals at the Olympic Games at Tokyo in the 400 and 800 metres- The first British female athlete to win a Gold medal on the track. Ann writes the following: My first appointment after leaving Dartford College of Physical Education in 1963 was at Lady Edridge Grammar School, South Norwood. 1964 was to be a very special year as the Olympic Games were to be held in Tokyo, Japan and my fiancé Robbie Brightwell and I were planning to be married on our return to the U.K during the Christmas Holiday. My search for a new position at a school nearer to where he was teaching (Tiffin Boys School ) took me to an interview at Coombe Girls School, New Malden. After being offered a job in the PE department I spent
an exciting Summer preparing for the Olympic Games and looking forward to a new challenge at Coombe. The Head Mistress and Staff had made me so welcome on my first day and the School atmosphere was warm and friendly. Furthermore they had willingly and enthusiastically supported my request for time off during that first term to travel to Tokyo. This, despite the extra burden my absence would put on the department. I have been forever grateful for their generosity. Many athletes at that time were forced to take unpaid leave or worse, faced the sack for pursuing their Olympic dreams. The British Athletic Team, captained by Robbie, enjoyed

a record haul of medals unsurpassed since and after 5 weeks away we were pleased to return home and amazed by the reception we were given including tea with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family immediately after arriving back at Heathrow Airport. Of course we were on a ‘high’ but it was back to work as we had been absent too long! The welcome given to me by the girls and staff was overwhelming even though the school was disrupted yet again by Press and TV, there was a genuine feeling of goodwill and I still cherish the many photos I have of that very special day. Before we went back to School in January, Robbie and I were married and our teaching lives returned to normal. Later that Spring he was offered a post as a PE lecturer at Loughborough College (where he had been a student) from the following September and so, all too soon my association with Coombe Girls School was to be terminated as we headed North. Sadly, I had to say good bye to good friends and colleagues as well as amazing students but I have the fondest of memories of my time with them all. I would appreciate hearing from any pupils at that time who could send me their recollections- I have already received one. Every Thursday to August 29th: Thumbs Up It’s Thursday Kingston is serving up six weeks of low cost and free activities for children aged two to 11 years in the town centre this summer. Every Thursday the town is running Thumbs Up It’s Thursday when children can enjoy activities including: arts and craft workshops, magicians shows, storytelling sessions and free family swims at 12 venues across the town. Each venue of the participating venues, which range from shopping centres to the Kingston Museum and Memorial Gardens, has designed a day of fun and activity, with the theme changing every week ranging from “Magical Moments” to “Monsters and Martians”, “Air, Land and Sea” and “Animal Antics”. Most activities don’t require advance booking, so children from the local area, London and beyond, can turn up with their parents and enjoy a day of educational and playful summer fun. Families will be encouraged to visit each of the participating venues with a special map and to get the map stamped at each place. Once they have finished the trail they will be awarded a certificate if they take their completed programme to the Kingston Museum. Seasonal recipe Peach Melba Shortcakes Ready in 2 hours 30 minutes Serves 8
These shortcakes are perfect for a speedy summer dessert. They take just minutes to make and bake and can be filled with whatever seasonal fruit you have to hand. Here they are filled with a rich and sweet mascarpone cream with juicy peaches and fresh raspberries but a simple dollop of extra thick cream and some sliced strawberries will be just as impressive. Ingredients: • 175g self-raising flour •1/2 tsp baking powder • 75g butter, chilled and diced •55g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 tbsp milk Filling • 125g mascarpone cheese • 2 tbsp icing sugar • 6 tbsp single cream • 175g fresh raspberries • 2 ripe peaches, stoned and sliced
Tip
The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree. Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries. Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves. VVoice

Hot Favourites by Pippa Greenwood Our summer weather isn’t usually unbearably warm; in fact it is often pretty cool and a little bit of extra heat would be very welcome. With a little bit of planning and some careful planting, you could turn your garden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. You can plant to create a mass of hot colours. All you have to do is plant beds, borders or containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowing oranges. True, most of the planting is best done in the autumn, but a visit to a garden centre at this time of year will reveal a fabulous display of plants which can be put to good use in your garden now. For real energy and vibrancy, choose plenty of yellows and golds, including some of the golden rods (Solidago), which should be flowering well into September. I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms of Coreopsis verticillata, which flowers well into the autumn and is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat looking flower heads in your garden then take a closer peep at some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’. No late summer border is complete without the cone flowers or rudbekias with their deliciously bright, daisylike flowers - these should last you through October. For some screaming scarlets and other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica. In damper areas you could use Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ or many of the other moisture-loving types of lobelia which produce huge spires of red flowers, so different from those tiny blue, pink and white bedding lobelias which are more widely grown. To make sure that your summer time plantings do well, take heed of the following tips: • If it’s a hot day, try to plant in early evening or at least late afternoon when the main heat of the sun has died down. • Always make sure that plants are really well watered before you put them in the ground. • Soak the compost thoroughly and make sure that it’s wetted right to the base before you begin. • Incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter, such

as garden compost, well-rotted manure or some proprietary compost from your garden centre, as this will help to retain moisture. • Once the plants are in position, water them in thoroughly - the water needs to go right down to where the plant needs it, at its roots. • Once the soil is moist, apply a good, deep mulch of 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm), all around the soil surface. Kingston volunteer police cadets (VPC) are recruiting new volunteers. The 13 to 18 year olds will meet locally once a week for drill, Duke of Edinburgh training, as well as to listen to guest speakers and to attend demonstrations from specialist police departments. The team will take part in various Inter Cadet competitions and attend events to support police colleagues.

Membership is open to young people from London’s diverse communities, irrespective of background, financial circumstances or any previous minor ‘brushes’ with the police. 100 Years of World Class Aircraft from Kingston Some of the most important British military aircraft were designed and built in Kingston between 1912 and 1992. The aircraft industry was the biggest single employer in Kingston for much of that time and is world renowned, a fact little known or recognised in Kingston except by those who were directly involved. Set up originally by Tommy Sopwith in a Roller Skating Rink near Kingston Station at the end of 1912, the Sopwith Aviation Company rapidly grew through the First World War to employ 3,500 people in Kingston designing and building, amongst others, the famous Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Triplane and Sopwith Camel fighters. Re-starting in 1920 as Hawker Engineering (later known as Hawker Aircraft) their famous designer Sydney Camm devised a hugely successful range of powerful biplane fighters and light bombers before his most famous design the 1935 Hawker Hurricane. The Hurricane was built in huge numbers and they were crucial to winning the Battle of Britain in 1940. Amazingly, with the Sopwith Camel and the Hawker Hurricane, Kingston had provided the most successful allied fighters in both the first and second world wars This painting of a Hawker Hurricane over the Hawker Aircraft Company’s flight sheds at Brooklands reminds us that the thousands of aircraft built in Kingston all left by lorry to be flown from Brooklands, then Langley and, from 1950, Dunsfold Airfield in Surrey. Had there been an airfield in Kingston, local people might have been much more aware of its aircraft industry. From 1948 Hawker Aircraft Co. moved from central Kingston to the large factory on the Richmond Road in Ham. Their world class aircraft designs continued into the cold war era with Hawker Hunters becoming a NATO standard jet fighter. In the 1960s the team came up with the unique Hawker Siddeley Harrier “jump jets” and in the 1970s the Hawk advanced trainers as used by Red Arrows. These products kept thousands of people employed, as part of British Aerospace, right through to 1992 and hundreds are still in service worldwide. The Kingston Aviation Centenary Project is celebrating the amazing achievements of local people over those 80 years. They held the Kingston Aviation Festival last

June and a much acclaimed Art exhibition in Kingston Museum. Now it the Malden area’s chance to enjoy all this with the highly acclaimed “100 Years of World Class Aircraft “ exhibition coming to New Malden Library from Saturday 3rd to Saturday 10th August. This is an exciting exhibition of aircraft models, paintings and historic photographs, with slideshows and talks. It includes a children’s area with a colouring competition and great prizes making it an ideal place to visit during the school holidays. Many people from the Malden area worked in the local aviation industry. If you or your family are amongst those, you can meet ex-colleagues in the “Hawker people” area and bring documents and photographs to be scanned for the project website and archives. We recommend the use of “ringing” around the base of the tree, this will cause a rapid dieback of the ivy mass without causing problems from pulling the climbers from the branches. This work is best done outside the nesting season for birds to avoid unnecessary disturbance. The best method is to use loppers to cut away the stems between ground and shoulder level right around the tree. Where the aesthetic form of the tree requires removal of the ivy mass then a careful climbing operation is required, this is most frequently undergone on trees that have weakened limbs form the excessive weight of the ivy mass. Chemical treatments such as Glyphosate are available to use on the ivy rootplate stems but this requires caution to avoid affecting the tree rootplate itself. Any ivy removed should be composted as bundles or mixed with other organic waste to decompose thoroughly. In conclusion, I feel that the whole debate on whether ivy is an attractive addition to a healthy tree is a matter of personal opinion; as a tree surgeon and a tree “lover” I side with trees having ivy under strict control so we can appreciate the tree trunk, branches and canopy as a complete form uncluttered by invasive climbers.

But what if you are sitting with leg in plaster or popping co-codomol because you tried to do a Lady Di or a David Beckham. The summer term, as well as the dread Summer Fayre, brings Sports Day and, while thousands of children up and down the country honed their skills with eggs, spoons and sacks, parent’s braced themselves dropped batons, three-legged races, tearful offspring and overcompetitive parents. Keep on Running According to a number of surveys it is the parents we should be most concerned about. A amazing fifty percent of physiotherapists say they’ve treated sportsday injuries suffered not by kids, but by mums and
dads who exerted themselves too much in the parent’s race.
