Welcome to

our February edition

D ear All, So, we’ve made it to the end of January! The Christmas

Decorations are (finally) back up in the loft, we’ve forgotten all about those resolutions we made so earnestly as Big Ben struck midnight and we’ve even survived the so-called most depressing day of the year (21st January, in case you didn’t notice!) Some of us will even be cracking open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the end of a month of sobriety (congratulations to all readers who successfully completed the “Dryathlon” challenge, many of whom were also raising funds for various charities as they turned their back on the booze for a whole month!) And others will just be hoping we’ve seen the last of the snow and ice that plagued us for the middle part of the month and will be looking forward to Spring (as the nights start to get just everso slightly longer and the odd, defiant crocus pops up in Beverley Park!) I’ve certainly noticed lots of runners (of all ages and abilities) and MAMILS (middle aged men in lyrca!) pounding the streets and cycle lanes of New Malden and Richmond Park since the start of the year. Don’t forget there are plenty of opportunities to get active and to meet new and like-minded people in the area, with running clubs organised by the Sheen Shufflers (featured in the Jan issue of the Village Voice) & the Christ Church Running Club (first Saturday of every month), the Old Emanuel Rugby Club (also featured last month) and of course our very own Malden Centre right on our doorstep.

Why advertise with us? We highly recommend advertising on Village Voice. We hosted the Silly Sonatas classical workshop for young children. We received an amazing turn out. Thanks to Village Voice. Ginger from Music Fun We have tried many forms of advertising from radio to leflet drops. The Village Voice (since 11/05) has been the most cost effective form of advertising with new customers coming in every month. We are so pleased to be part of it. Roland Head, The Real Butchers

4

But, if you’d rather partake in sporting activity from the comfort of your sofa, then of course the Rugby 6 Nations kicks off on Feb 2nd, just down the road at Twickenham (and with a half Welsh/Irishman, a Scot and two ‘sort of’ English girls in our house, it’s certainly fun for all the family!) SPECIAL So, whatever you’re up to – have a great READER February. OFFERS! Happy Valentines! And best wishes until next time

Rotary

A big thank you!

JtheeffPresident Reardon of

the New Malden Rotary Club and Rotarians would like to thank New Malden residents for their generosity during the Santa Claus street collections and the Saturday collections outside the Co-Op and Waitrose. The total sum raised was a magnificent £6,300 despite one evening street collection having to be called off owing to a heavy downpour. Many local good causes and some International Charities will benefit from the proceeds which will be supplemented by other fund raising events throughout the year. Help this Christmas included food vouchers for deserving families, a contribution to the Food Bank and Christmas lunches for the lonely and disabled. A big thank you to local residents for contributing so generously to the appeal started in May to replace the redundant Christmas lights in the High Street. This was a great success and £7,000 was raised and new lights were purchased. Particular thanks for generous donations are due to the New Victoria Hospital, 26 businesses and the Girl Guides. The grand sequential switching on ceremony of the new lights down the High Street on the 30th November with Father Christmas and the Lady Mayor in the sleigh was a great success and the High Street was packed. In the New Year we hold the Youth Speaks Competition for local schools which is held at the Methodist Church in the High Street. From January 8th until March 12th we are helping with mock interviews at Richard Challoner School. Each Tuesday four Rotary Club members conduct interviews with pupils and then give feedback to help them when attending college, University or job assessments. Finally, in association with the Inner Wheel we support the Mary Preston Holiday scheme. VVoice

Farmers’ Market

Plans for 2013

EBusinesses arlier last year the Community of New Malden (CNMB) along with some interested

local people decided that it would be great to try to bring a farmers market to New Malden. The idea grew and we agreed to stage a Christmas market on Saturday 1st December as a trial for a more regular market. St Georges Square was the venue and our thanks must go to CLS Holdings for allowing this to happen. We had 21 stalls on the day including a butchers, bakers, cakemakers, cheese, hot food sellers and a number of gift stalls. The day was a huge success and we received great feedback from everyone we spoke to on the day. Many people commented how nice it

was to have a community based event that had the effect of bringing people together even if it was just for a few hours. We hope that a regular monthly farmers market will begin in March 2013 and we would love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved. www.nmfarmersmarket.co.uk VVoice

New Malden History It’s a jungle out there by Robin Gill

Tlatehe1880s. Moloney family arrived in New Malden in the They took up residence in a property

called Bartley Lodge which stood approximately on the site of 137-141 High Street today. The father was Jeremiah a former captain in the Kings Royal Rifles. An army man for most of his life, he had been the quartermaster (responsible for supplies to the regiment). He received his discharge from the forces in 1875, but attempts to build up a business in civilian life as an army contractor supplying the troops in the Portsmouth area, failed due to fires and unpaid debts. Jeremiah’s wife Mary Christina accompanied him to New Malden together with children Helena Marguerite, Lucy Adelaide Kathleen Swifte, Mary Kate Gertrude, and (Charles )Albert. Another son Joseph Augustus, a qualified physician was living in the City while carrying on his practice in Battersea where he gained a reputation of being well liked “by all classes”. The eldest daughter married early in 1888, and Jeremiah died later the same year. Lucy married in 1891, and the family moved to Coombe Lodge which stood on Coombe Road between Lime and Chestnut Groves. Mary (mother) died on 24th November 1894; she was well known in the village and held in great respect, attending the Catholic Church in Kingston (St Josephs was not built until 1921). Within the next two years the two remaining children Mary and Albert had moved to Surbiton. Joseph the explorer Described as thick set and determined looking, Joseph was as hard as nails. Born in Newry Ireland in 1857, he studied medicine at St Thomas’s Hospital, and obtained his degree in Dublin. He was a member of the Royal Geographical Society and renown as an explorer, having seen more of Africa than any other living man other than Stanley. An accomplished sportsman, yachtsman, and a good shot (member of Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers) His first experience of Africa was a visit to Morocco in 1890. Exploitation of the vast mineral wealth of the continent was at its height, and it was announced in March 1891 that the Congo Free State was intending to open up the region of Katanga which was rich in copper, quicksilver, and gold. Katanga lies in the modern day Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was ruled over by Msiri the local tribal chief who was reluctant to accept outside “help” in the development To advertise email jenny@nmvv.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

of its mineral wealth. The majority of the rest of the Free State was ruled by Belguim, but they were worried that the French might take the region and its resources. An Anglo-Belgian Expedition to the area was set up to leave for Zanzibar on May 11th with Joseph as the medical officer of the party of six Europeans and 336 Africans led by Captain William Stairs. After a trek across the continent the party reached Katanga at Christmas, and commenced negotiations with Msiri, but these were going nowhere and after he (Msiri) had left unannounced for a second time it was decided to take him prisoner, but when one of the Europeans (CaptainBodson) tried to capture Msiri, he ended up shooting dead the leader in self defence, before being killed himself. The dead chief body was handed over to his brothers as a peace offering by Dr Moloney. Even Moloney was dangerously ill, with a temperature of over 100 degrees, but he managed to supervise the building of a fort nearby. Food was also in short supply, and the group found themselves living off white ants and locusts until relief arrived. In February, a twenty six day trek back to the coast then followed for the remainder of the party. Captain Stairs died of fever en route having been previously nursed back to health by Dr Moloney. Additionally, a hundred and ninety Africans had also perished. The expedition arrived

back in Zanzibar in May 1892 with Moloney and the Marquis De Beauchamp the only European survivors of the party. Joseph tried to bring back a leopard for Queen Victoria a present from one of the African chiefs but it also died en route to Zanzibar, though he was successful in returning with a previously unknown breed of monkey. Joseph the author Joseph Moloney returned to New Malden in August 1892 to write his book about the expedition called “With Captain Stairs to Katanga” published in June 1893. I am told this book will “transport readers to a world of cannibals, missionaries, and slave traders; a provocative military invasion and its bloody climax; and the mercenaries’ nightmarish return march”, originally priced at 8/6 it is now £700 a copy, so I admit I haven’t read it. He received a medal from the King of Belgium in Brussels in gratitude for his services. Joseph the horseman The only glimpse we get of Dr Maloney outside of Africa is in April 1895 when he rides out with the Surrey Staghounds, to take part in a point to point race at Horton Manor near Epsom. These were a group of farmers who enjoyed riding, and for them these races were an annual event. The course was three miles over natural fences and streams, and it is not recorded

how the doctor faired, but he certainly wasn’t amongst the leading finishers. Africa calls again Joseph died on 5th October 1896 at his brothers house; Oxford Lodge, Adelaide Road, in Surbiton. It is stated that his death was due to the suffering he had endured during his time in Africa a few years previously. He had just (April) returned from commanding an English expedition to Lake Nyasa (present day Malawi), where he had acted with great diplomacy convincing four African leaders to put their trust in the British Crown for the future. Very few Europeans had ventured into this area, one of the few being Dr Livingstone. Moloney stayed for five months during which time no threat of force was used by any party. Albert seems to have inherited his brother’s sense of adventure taking part in the Klondike Gold Rush to the Yukon in Canada in 1898, sending detailed reports of his progress back home via the Reuters news agency.

Unfortunately, according to his descendant, his gold claim document detailing the area where he had rights, proved to be worthless, and was thrown away by the family. Joseph Moloney was a person of whom Malden can justifiably be proud. Yes, he was part of an organised campaign by European governments of the 19th century to occupy parts of Africa intent on mining its wealth. But he was a believer in diplomacy rather than bullets, not one of those who shot first and negotiated afterwards. He was a remarkable medical man in the most difficult of circumstances, but in the end Africa claimed him, as it had many of his patients and predecessors. He was 38 years old. He is buried in Kingston Cemetery with one of his sisters and close to his parents. Illustrations 1) Part of route taken by Moloney in 1895 2) Dr Joseph Augustus Molon VVoice

the perils of fashion fads and tank tops by Justin Urquhart Stewart

W hen it comes to watching asset classes year by year it is always amusing to see how this year’s hot tip can so easily become next year’s embarrassment. I have just been looking at a snapshot of the latest year on year change to asset classes and not unsurprisingly a similar

pattern is coming out. In 2011, the laggards were Private Equity, along with Emerging Market and European Equities all showing double digit losses; meanwhile it was Gold, Gilts and Index Linked that took all the plaudits for being the fashion fads of the year. So if we roll forward another twelve months and low and behold, Gold has lost much of its lustre and Index Linked has also lost its earlier attractions. Meanwhile it

was the unfashionable tank tops that came back again for 2012 with Private Equity up 25%. Emerging Market shares up 17%, and of course the most unfashionable of all – European shares up nearly 15% - with of course the most unloved of all – Greece, where the Athens Stock Exchange General index was up a remarkable total return of over 38%. We always need to be reminded against following slavishly last year’s fashionable tips. For most of us, the blend of asset classes will usually provide a far steadier and more predictable return. It may sound quite dull or even boring in comparison, but far better that we grow our assets steadily over time rather than be taking bigger and riskier bets for shorter term gains (and losses!). In fact a balanced portfolio over 2012 would have done as expected and been roughly in the middle of all the asset classes at around 8-10%. Killing the retail zombies to allow the next generation of development As another famous name went into administration last week, so another tooth in the decaying smile of the retail high street fell out. In fact as smiles go, the high

street is looking like a dental disaster. Although as yet we don’t know the eventual fate of HMV or Blockbuster, it follows a growing line of retail failures including well known names such as Comet and Jessops. However, we can also add the number of stores being closed by other weakened names including JJB Sports, Clinton Cards, Game Group and Peacocks and no doubt others will follow. Obviously each closure of a store or business is a personal tale of financial pain and worry to those involved both as employees, investors and suppliers. However, the retail world is going through a huge change, not just technologically but also economically. We all know that a significant proportion of in-store purchases have been replaced by on-line purchases (and has increased that related effect of having to queue at the local sorting office on a Saturday morning for your goods!), but when compounded by a weakened economy and consumer confidence then this really is a perfect storm for some. Others of course have been more successful even in these difficult times - John Lewis partnership comes to mind. However, we should also see such actions as being part of the normal order of clearing out the dead wood to allow the new shoots to come through. Such companies can attract quite correctly the popular title of zombie company, as they can’t grow, they won’t die and they just exist by taking up valuable capital and

cash. But the demise of the zombies you will allow the redeployment of capital and effort into newer growing businesses and despite the shorter term pain, we will see longer term gain. As for the high streets, the local authorities should use their imagination (surely an oxymoron?) to make plans to draw people back into the centres and not push them away. Some of the parking laws and charges are barking, and dissuade anybody from coming in. Other issues are the mix of shops which should be managed to encourage the right profile and interest. Otherwise you will end up with a sad line-up of pay day loans, bookies and charity shops. Shopping properly managed is a form of entertainment – tragic high streets are not. Thought should be applied on housing development opportunities to address shortages especially in the South East. We shouldn’t be despondent, but rather imaginative and already we saw in Q3 last year an increase in the number of jobs in retail and wholesale. VVoice Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor.

YMCA Get Grant To Bring Unoccupied Homes Back Into Use Eintompty unoccupied homes will be brought back use to help house dozens of homeless people

through a new YMCA London South West scheme. The local charity which houses over 500 people a year in supported accommodation have been awarded a £56K grant by the Greater London Authority which it will use to identify and redevelop four homes in Kingston and Merton. The properties will then be used as ‘move-on’ accommodation for YMCA LSW residents; a shared, affordable home which will act as a stepping stone between hostel accommodation and living independently. YMCA LSW will work on the project with the Royal

20

Borough of Kingston, Merton Council and Habitat for Humanity, a charity who will work with YMCA residents to redevelop the homes. Andy Redfearn, Director of Development at YMCA LSW, said: “We are all acutely aware of the scandal of having empty properties in this part of London while the need for affordable accommodation for single people is at its highest. As a local housing charity working with single people we are very aware of the challenges they face in finding affordable accommodation. "The grant funding along with money from the YMCA will create four renovated properties for local people in housing need in the next three years. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity will also mean our residents will be involved in the construction and gain valuable work experience and qualifications in the construction industry. The YMCA lease the accommodation for between 5 and 10 years and guarantee a rental income to the owner as well as improve the property.” In Kingston and Merton there are over 3000 empty homes (Empty homes statistics for 2011), many of which could easily be refurbished and used for affordable housing. YMCA LSW are actively looking for properties and anything from flats, houses and small commercial buildings can be considered. If you are aware of an empty property in your neighbourhood please contact andyredfearn@ymcalsw.org or visit www.ymcalsw.org

Spotlight on... A1 Lofts

M andy, a primary school teacher, and

her husband Stuart, a prosthetics makeup artist for television and films, moved into their three bedroom semi detached home in New Malden with their energetic young son Jamie. With future plans to add to their family and for Stuart to work more from home, they recognised the potential for developing the loft space within the property and the opportunity to increase the value. Five years later, Ben, their bouncing baby son arrived. Stuart decided to use one of the bedrooms as a study allowing him to spend more time at home with his sons. Heaps of toys, mountains of baby clothes and nappies along with all the paraphernalia essential for a new arrival created an urgent need for more space. The two boys were sharing the other bedroom until one child became poorly and constantly disturbed his brother in the early hours of the morning. Lack of sleep became an issue for the whole family and they realised that they needed another bedroom. After discussing the additional problems of inviting guests to stay and accommodating the grandparents, keen to assist the young family, a loft conversion was the solution and the very thought of a large space just for ‘mummy and daddy’ to call their own sealed the deal. Al Loft Conversions was instructed to begin work, ‘the build had no impact on our use of the rest of the house, we just carried on as usual, sneaking furtive peaks up the stairs every now and then, trying to imagine how it would look when finished’ says Mandy. ‘As any young family will know, mornings are chaotic, getting lunches and uniforms ready as well as organising yourself for work, can be so stressful. We found that the building work did not interfere with our family life at all, which was a pleasant surprise. The builders were so considerate and kept noise to a minimum when we were at home. In fact, I even managed to write some essays when the build was in full-flow. The disruption to our family routine during the four weeks of the main build was manageable at worst and non-existent for the most part’. The loft conversion has had a significant impact on Mandy and Stuart as they now have a spacious double bedroom with en suite bathroom to relax in after a busy day with work and the constant demands of Ben, always full of beans and the rapidly growing Jamie. The loft space offers a peaceful retreat for the young couple, somewhere calm and relaxing. The extra bedroom also means that relatives and friends can stay and now when the children

share a bedroom it is a treat for them rather than a chore. ‘Without a doubt, my favourite place in our home is the loft room. From the moment it was ready I felt so comfortable in it. It’s a precious space where I can unwind in the evening, have a steamy shower and tumble into bed’. On a peaceful Sunday morning Mandy sinks into her favourite comfy armchair, sips her coffee and admires the view of her garden from her new loft space. She offers her advice to those considering a loft conversion; ‘Look at the practical aspects, what problems would more space solve? And look at the emotional benefits, as I totally underestimated these. I am delighted with the high quality of the workmanship and the attention to detail in creating the perfect space for my family. The final result is that we reap the rewards of our investment day after day’. VVoice

Tree care Evergreens

Sonlycots3 native Pine along with the Yew and Juniper are the evergreen trees in our country and as such

they should have value to our history and gardens! At the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago, vast tracts of our country were covered by these trees along with Birch, Oaks and Rowan. The forests have been cleared over thousands of years leaving a few remnant areas pre dominantly in Scotland where the climate still suits this assemblage of trees. In there prime these forests supported wildlife as diverse as beavers, brown bears, wolves, lynx and the golden eagle. The re introduction of beavers in recent years is a significant move to restore this ancient environment. As trees Scots Pines are interesting and attractive additions to many medium and large size gardens. Most trees grow to a height of 20m or more over a period of up to about 250 years, examples of these trees reaching an age of over 600 years has been recorded in Norway. The evergreen tree has needles that last up to 4 years along with 7cm seed cones containing the seeds that disperse in the wind on small wings. I particularly admire the bark of these trees with an attractive flaky

texture and range of colours through the year from a grey shade to a vibrant orange/red hue. These trees are a valuable timber resource in many parts of the world being grown on huge plantations especially for the construction industry. The industry is very concerned over the dual problems of pinewood nematode causing wilt and rapid death in those over 10 years of age and the fungus Fusarium circinatum causing pitch cankers on the branches and trunk. If you spot a resin like weeping canker or rapid dieback of the limbs we advise you seek an arborist assessment for these possible problems. As with the diseases affecting Oak, Elm, Horse Chestnut and Ash trees in recent times much work needs to be done in identifying the causes and limiting further tree

loss. The prime suspect for the spread is the unregulated trading in trees both across Europe; in recent months a greater perception is apparent in controlling nursery tree movements. As interest in trees from other global areas such as Asia continues to grow the potential for other diseases or pests entering the UK will intensify. Within your garden Scots pine trees adapt well to a range of tree surgery procedures that can shape the tree from a conical to a lower level broader form . The trees can be thinned out, reduced in size and have the lower crown lifted to improve light conditions and aesthetic form. If you have this tree in your garden you have a part of our ancient native landscape! Roger Kerr R J Tree Services VVoice

Rose Production The Vortex - Noël Coward’s tale of sexual vanity and drug abuse among the upper classes is directed by the Rose’s Artistic Director Stephen Unwin. What do

36

you do if your mother’s lovers are the same age as you? Noël Coward’s follow-up to Hay Fever was described as ‘un peu shocking’ and was his first great success. The relationship between the decadent young Nicky Lancaster and his highly-sexed mother scandalised its original audiences and still packs a punch. Thu 7 Feb – Sat 9 Mar £8. to £40 Rose Plus Choir - Return to the rose for a single day to learn, rehearse and perform a valentine special. Either join the choir to sing a programme of romantic classics in the Rose auditorium, or join the audience for a performance you’ll never forget. Whether a practised chorister or a secret shower-time singer, this is an exhilarating experience for all. Sun 17 Feb 7.30pm £5 The Comedy Store - There’s nothing like the buzz of live comedy. As the original home of stand up comedy in the UK, The Comedy Store bring the best and brightest comedians from Leicester Square to your doorstep. Sun 24 Feb 7.30pm £10 - £12 Time To Talk: Peter Bowles- Stephen Unwin talks to the well-known British actor Peter Bowles, whose work includes To the Manor Born and The Rivals. Expect a backstage look at the job of acting as it really is, and behind the scenes stories gleaned from years in the industry. Tue 26 Feb 5.30pm £3 - £5 Tall Stories - The Gruffalo’s Child - One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist... does he? The creators of the stage version of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s The Gruffalo, Tall Stories Theatre Company, return with in a magical, musical adaptation for ages 3 years and above. John Rutherford (Northern Broadsides’

Artistic Director Barrie Rutter) is a tyrannical patriarch, blind to the hopes and feelings of his family. The success of the family firm takes precedence over everything… even happiness. Tue 19 – Sat 23 Mar 7.30pm, Thu & Sat mat 2.30pm £8 £25 Rose Production - Smack Family Robinson - In an exciting move, the Rose’s production of Richard Bean’s black comedy, directed by Richard Wilson, has been relocated from Whitley Bay to South West London. The Robinsons have run a successful, if a bit dodgy, family business since the 1960s. They have a comfortable house in the suburbs and expensive cars in the drive. But the younger generation aren’t like their dad. And the police are getting interested. Richard Bean is one of Britain’s most successful comic playwrights. His many plays include Toast, Harvest (Royal Court) and the sensational award-winning National Theatre, West End and Broadway hit, One Man, Two Guvnors. Thu 28 Mar – Sat 20 Apr £8 to £35 Time to Talk: Richard Bean - Prior to the evening performance of Smack Family Robinson, Richard Bean is taking part in the Rose’s popular Time to Talk series. This is a chance to hear from one on Britain’s best playwrights about his long and successful career, followed by the opportunity to ask your own questions. Wed 17 A5.30pm £3 - £5 Propeller - Twelfth Night - One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. With a man playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality are almost indistinguishable on Propeller’s island of Illyria Tue 23 Apr - Sat 27 Apr Tue 23 7.30pm, Fri 26 7.30pm, Sat 27 2pm £8 - £26 Propeller - The Taming of the Shrew - In The Taming Of The Shrew, two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of beautiful Bianca whilst gold digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate sight-unseen. Clubs

Kingstonian FC Iseason t’s half-time in 2012/13 for

your local football team, Kingstonian, and they are still in contention for a late season challenge for promotion to the Conference South league. So what of the season to date? Results were positive for the first two months of the season with only one league defeat in the first two months of the season, a 1-0 loss at Bury Town in the depths of East Anglia. At this point Kingstonian hit the dizzy heights of the pinnacle of the Ryman Isthmian League. However, this didn’t last long as the team came down to earth with a bang, losing at closest rivals, Wealdstone, despite taking a 2-0 lead. Since this setback, results have been mixed, and one result hasn’t even been decided, as Kingstonian played an evening game at Whitehawk (Brighton) which was abandoned because of floodlight failure fifteen minutes from the end, with Kingstonian leading 2-0. Other highlights of the ‘first-half’ were a magnificent win at Lowestoft who were riding high in the league at the time, 3-1, a place that not many other teams have reaped rewards; and progression through the lesser stages of the FA Trophy, a competition that Kingstonian won twice just over ten years ago. However, as you progress in the competition, the opposition gets stronger, and a tough home draw against Dartford, a team from two leagues above Kingstonian, put paid to further Kingstonian progress. Looking forward to the second half of the season, Kingstonian will have to push on with more consistency in order to take the League Championship, or to make one of the four play-off spots. Attractive games lie ahead with the visits of Hastings United, who progressed through to the 3rd round of the FA Cup before being defeated by Middlesborough, on Monday 11th March, and with Bury Town, riding high in the table, who Kingstonian will look to avenge their first defeat earlier in the season, when they visit Kingsmeadow on 16th March. Current league-leaders Whitehawk are due at Kingsmeadow on Saturday 6th April, in what is already being described as Kingstonian’s ‘make or break’ game. All the upcoming fixtures and other information can on the Ks can be found at www.kingstonian.com. So if you are free on a Saturday afternoon, or for

40

one of Kingstonian’s evening games, get along to Kingsmeadow and get behind the team. The players have described the home crowd as their 12th man and really appreciate the support they get from the fans. In order to encourage the youngsters along, it’s ‘kids for free’ at Kingsmeadow, providing that they are under 16 and can provide proof of age. VVoice

A Passion for Potatoes by Pippa Greenwood Fpotatoes ebruary is the time of year to think about perfect and smashing spuds. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable. If you don’t have much space, use a 45cm (18in) diameter pot with a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes, fill it two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added, then keep the container well watered. Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting. What to Grow: Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers. New potatoes dripping in chives and butter are wonderful. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola. If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward. If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor. For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue. For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue. Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested) and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if your soil hasn’t been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ are in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. ‘Earlies’ are also useful in smaller gardens as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fastmaturing crop after the potatoes have been lifted. No crop is without its share of problems and the fungus responsible for potato blight is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona.

44

Slugs are also a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Visit www.pippagreenwood.com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. Pippa sends them to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you receive an email with advice on ensuring great results; from just £29 for up to 66 garden-ready plants and the advice. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter, receive a free e-book on organic gardening, buy Nemaslug and other biological controls and a hand-picked selection of garden products from her website. Recycling Metal matters

M etal matters when it comes to recycling Kingston Council is playing its part in the

‘MetalMatters’ campaign to encourage people to recycle more metal packaging such as tins, cans, aerosols, foil metal bottle tops and jar lids. Leaflets will be dropping through local letterboxes over the next few weeks to advise householders that, when it comes to recycling, metal really does matter. The leaflets remind people that every piece of metal packaging put out for recycling will be used again and again for years to come. And every time it’s recycled it saves energy, cuts carbon emissions – and cuts costs to taxpayers, as recycling is far cheaper than landfill. The campaign is being delivered through the South London Waste Partnership – a group of four councils (Kingston, Croydon, Merton and Sutton) that are working together to provide improved waste management services to local people. Councillor Derek Osbourne, Kingston Council leader and Chair of the South London Waste Partnership Joint Committee, said: “Recycling one tonne of aluminium saves nine tonnes of CO2 emissions - the equivalent of driving nearly 3000 miles. Every tonne of recycled steel saves 40 per cent of the water required for virgin steel, saves half a tonne of coal, and uses only a quarter of the energy. “Whilst most residents already recycle their food and drink cans, the Metal Matters campaign highlights the fact that sweet and biscuit tins, empty aerosols, foil trays, kitchen foil, metal bottle tops and jar lids can also be recycled.” The cost of running the campaign is being met by Recycle for London, Viridor (the company that provides recycling, composting and residual waste treatment services to the Partnership) and a partnership made up of organisations and businesses from the metal packaging and recycling industry; it is being managed on their behalf by Alupro (the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation). Alupro Executive Director Rick Hindley said: “We have seen the Metal Matters campaign deliver fantastic results in other parts of the country, but this is the first time the campaign will have been run anywhere in London, so I’m excited to see what difference it can make.”

Cllr Derek Osbourne and Cllr Sharon Hartley, Lead Member for Sustainability, Kingston Council.

emissions and 4 tonnes of bauxite – the raw material from which aluminium is made • Metal can be recycled without any loss of quality or strength because its atomic structure doesn’t change when melted – metal can be recycled indefinitely • Making aluminium cans from recycled metal is 20 times more energy efficient than using ‘primary’ metal • Recycling seven cans saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours • In as little as six weeks, the empty can you put in your recycling could be transformed and back on the supermarket shelf.

Did you know.. • Recycling a tonne of steel saves 1.5 tonnes of iron ore and reduces CO2 emissions by 80 per cent • Recycling a tonne of aluminium saves 9 tonnes of C02

Spotlight on... Stan Christofi A lpha Class Wedding Cars owner Stan Christofi has lived in New Malden for 37

years. Stan and his wife bought up their two children who attended local Schools and now live nearby. Following a successful career within the motor industry for over 43 years, Stan decided to start Alpha Class Wedding Cars in April last year. He had a passion to own a Rolls-Royce and when the opportunity arose he purchased a Silver Cloud III in 1998 which was in need of restoration. With the help of his motor trade colleagues the car received every care and attention and the restoration programme was completed in 2011. Stan believed that the condition of the car was worthy of recognition and he entered the car in the Rolls-Royce enthusiasts Rally in 2012, to his delight the car was awarded with 2nd prize in its class.

We are a local family business based in New Malden, Surrey. Our wedding car hire provides luxurious, Classic and Modern bridal cars. Every bride should have the opportunity to arrive in style on her wedding day and feel like a celebrity. We believe our cars and service can offer this experience, the key to our success is the professional, reliable, personal and friendly service we are able to provide. Our mission is to provide you with a service which will meet your entire satisfaction and exceed your expectations.

What do you love about your business? It is very gratifying to be in a position to contribute to a couple just starting married life by providing a service which makes their special day that little bit more memorable by arriving in a prestigious car. What do you like about New Malden for you to live in the town for over 35 years? New Malden is a very nice area to live in; it has great schools and also provides good commuter links into London. The town also has a wide variety of shops on the high street. What changes would you like to see in New Malden? The high street has a very multicultural feel with the various specialist hypermarkets, but I would like to see more traditional shops, such as bakers, butchers, grocers etc. Who is your favourite singer? I would say Katherine Jenkins as I like classical music. What is your best recent achievement? Receiving the award for my Rolls-Royce, I am very proud of it. What is your future goal? I would like to expand Alpha Class Wedding Cars and spend as much time as I can with my family. VVoice

Safer Neighbourhoods Don’t be a victim

Tstarkhieves see your possessions differently is the warning behind the Metropolitan Police

Service’s (MPS) new advertising campaign which launched in mid January to alert the public to the risk of street robbery. The advertising highlights the importance of taking steps to protect your phones, tablet devices, jewellery, cash and other valuables, and is timed to coincide with the start of the year when there is historically a rise in figures. When enjoying nights out it is easy to forget in the fun of the moment the target that you can provide to would-be thieves. Mobile phones are especially attractive to thieves and we would urge everyone to consider the tips below to avoid becoming a phone theft victim: - Ensure it’s harder for thieves to get at your phone by making a habit of keeping it in a secure or zipped pocket - If you are getting out your phone out in the street, don’t attract attention to it - try to avoid texting/ checking it as you are walkingalong and be especially alert when taking it out as you emerge from public transport hubs - these are often hotspots. - Keeping both hands on the phone and holding it on the side of your body away from the street can make it harder from thieves on pedal or motorbikes to snatch it from you. - Never leave your phone unattended in a public place and don’t leave it lying in front of you on a table as you could become prey to distraction theft. A lot of thefts occur in pubs, restaurants or concerts where the phone is left in handbags or unattended jackets - Don’t leave your phone in an unattended car - if you must, lock it out of sight. It only takes seconds for a thief to smash a window and steal it. Plan ahead for something that we hope does not

happen to you and make sure you remember to : • register your mobile phone at www.immobilise.com • use your phone’s security lock code, if it has one • record details of your electronic serial number (ESN) • some phones have an IMEI number which is a unique identifier for the phone; you can obtain this number by typing *#06# (star hash 06 hash) into your mobile phone and it will display a 15 digit number . Make sure you record this somewhere safe. • property mark your phone with your postcode and door number to help police identify stolen ones • report a lost or stolen phone to the police immediately (and have to hand your IMEI number) • inform your service provider if your phone is stolen or lost As always I wish you a crime free and peaceable February - hopefully in firm connection with your mobile phone! Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want” Bill Watterson

W hy are we so poor at dealing with bad weather? Why is it that it seems to catch us by surprise? It’s winter.

It happens at pretty much the same time every year. It gets cold. It rains and it often snows! The Polish guys working on our house find it hard to believe, moaning about how long it had taken to get home because the trains had stopped running, saying, “At home, it is minus sixteen and half a metre of snow.” I’m sure that other Northern European citizens laugh their socks off at our pathetic attempts to keep our country going under 6cm of snow and temperatures just below freezing: schools close early, trains stop running and commuters are forced to dash home early just in case. National Sickie Day However, the recent bad weather has led me to another conclusion. We probably aren’t that bad at dealing with it we just like to use it as an excuse for some extra time off. Snow days have become a national institution, a great excuse for a day off but not the only one: apparently the first Monday in February is often dubbed ‘national sickie day’, when staff are most likely to take an unofficial day off. (A survey by Career Builder of more than 2,400 employers and 3,900 workers found that, with heightened absenteeism generally increases around holidays, December is the leading month with twenty percent of employers reporting their employees call in sick most that month. July is the nextmost popular month to call in sick, followed by January and February.) Here are some of the most frequently used excuses and there pitfalls: I’ve got a bad cold/cough This is a classic that works a treat if performed correctly. Expert malingerers make sure to set it up with some groundwork, maybe a few sneezes a couple of days earlier. Please note that is a big giveaway a) getting someone to ring in for you, when most ‘illnesses’) wouldn’t normally prevent you from picking up the phone or b) getting spotted in, say Chiccos, enjoying a latte. Food poisoning ‘I ate some dodgy seafood’ – who could prove that it wasn’t a twenty four hour bug, that came on with no warning and the obvious after-effects. However, don’t overdo it by offering too much detail which might suggest that you are lying. My child is sick This is an area where employers will generally give leeway. Be warned, a lack of groundwork can cause embarrassment if, for example, the child you are supposed to be looking after rings the office to speak to you! A morning in mourning Unbelievable as it sounds, funeral attendance is a commonly-used excuse for absenteeism. Employees have

been known to invent a favourite aunt or uncle, but being able to remember the story is vital as it is not unheard of for a grandmother to have ‘died’ on five different occasions over a two-year period. Travel Chaos So easy to believe in the UK. Bad weather during winter months; train delays; car trouble or an accident en route are all excuses that can be used. You do need to make sure your that story tallies with where you live. It’s no good having a cheeky lie-in, trailing in several hours late then seeing a colleague who makes the same journey as you sitting there, having arrived at nine am on the dot. Wrong trousers, wrong day While most of the above can be pulled off if delivered with enough conviction, there are some that just can’t. Like the chap who rang in one day to tell his manager that he ‘thought it was Sunday so I won’t be in this morning’. Honest maybe, but not likely to save his job. Let’s just hope it snows some more and we can all legitimately stay in bed! 2012’s most Unusual Excuses for missing work • I forgot I had been hired for the job. • My dog was having a nervous breakdown. • My dead grandmother was being exhumed for a police investigation. • My toe was stuck in a tap. • A bird bit me. • I was upset after watching The Hunger Games. • I got sick from reading too much. • I was suffering from a broken heart. • My hair turned orange from dying my hair at home.
