Welcome to

our March edition DTheearweather All, has been so unpredictable that, at the

time of writing, it’s pretty difficult to guess what’ll be happening out there when you’re reading this. Could be snow (look right) or spring may indeed have sprung. Despite the snow and occasional rain (remember, I’m from Glasgow where it rain aLOT more!) I’ve been loving the weather so far this year. On 9th January I joined a weekly beginners running course (thanks to Bob at the Sheen Shufflers) and in conjunction with this am also following the Couch to 5K programme – which takes people like me who haven’t run since they were made to at school, and very gradually builds up strength and stamina, aiming to complete a run 5k in 8 weeks. Yikes!! Yesterday I managed to run for 2 lots of 10 minutes without collapsing and with only myself geeing me on. Watch this space - and try to be kind if you see me pounding/panting along…. Huge thanks to my running buddies Heidi and Archie for not letting me give up before i even started! Anyway, it has been such an absolute pleasure getting to know some of our fine parks better – Richmond, Bushy and Nonsuch – and enjoy the privilege in fine sunny winter weather. Joy! Remember, although we publish the magazine monthly, we deliver to most homes every 2nd month so that we can cover a larger area. So if you received this edition through the door you aren’t likely to get the April edition. You can, however, read it online www.nmvv.co.uk or collect a copy from one of our distribution points.

Why advertise with us? We highly recommend advertising on Village Voice. We hosted the Silly Sonatas classical workshop for young children. We received an amazing turn out. Thanks to Village Voice. The Village Voice (since 11/05) has been the most cost effective form of advertising with new customers coming in every month. We are so pleased to be part of it. Roland Head, The Real Butchers

Market on the Square 2nd March 9am-2pm

E(CNMB) arlier last year the Community of New Malden Businesses along with some interested local people decided that it

would be great to try to bring a farmers market to New Malden. The idea grew and we staged a Christmas market on Saturday 1st December as a trial for a more regular market. St Georges Square was the venue and our thanks must go to CLS Holdings for allowing this to happen. We had 21 stalls on the day including a butchers, bakers, cakemakers, cheese, hot food sellers and a number of gift stalls. The day was a huge success and we received great feedback from everyone we spoke to on the day. Many people commented how nice it was to have a community based event that had the effect of bringing people together even if it was just for a few hours. And so we are delighted to announce that our first regular Market on the Square will be held on 2nd March and the first Saturday of the month thereafter from 9am to 2pm. we would love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved. www.nmfarmersmarket.co.uk VVoice

World-class cycling returns to Kingston H ot on the wheels of the amazing Olympic Games cycle races which came through Kingston in 2012, some

of the best road cyclists in the world will be racing through the streets of London and Surrey in August 2013 - this time joined by 20,000 amateurs. Kingston residents and businesses are being urged to be prepared and plan ahead for the arrival of the Prudential RideLondon - a new world-class annual two-day cycling festival developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies in partnership with Surrey County Council as part of the Olympic legacy. The festival will take place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 August and will feature a series of events for amateur, club, world elite, youth and hand cyclists. In cycling’s answer to the London Marathon, the RideLondon 100 will see 20,000 amateur cyclists pass through Kingston as they take part in a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads which will feature 150 professional cyclists race as they take part in the Ride London Classic later in the day. The best action will be broadcast live on TV both in the UK and internationally. RideLondon is a key part of the London 2012 Games

Legacy Programme and a global charity fundraising event. The event will encourage participation in sport - especially cycling locally, while putting Kingston back on the international stage as people across the world watch the elite cyclists compete. Roads in the borough will be closed for substantial periods of time on race day (Sunday 4 August). Preparations are unlikely to have an impact on traffic the day before, so people will be able to go about their business as usual. On 4 August, transport surrounding the route will be affected by road closures and parking suspensions. Road closures will be in place from 5:30am on the day and will give limited access in and around the route, which will be fully looked after by trained marshalls. What the race schedule will mean for Kingston on the day 6:50am to 10am 20,000 cyclists will travel through the north side of Kingston from Richmond Park along Queen’s Road, Kingston Hill, London Road, Cromwell Road, Richmond Road, Sopwith Way, Wood Street, Horse Fair and Kingston Bridge on their way to Surrey. 9:30am to 3pm The 20,000 cyclists will return to the borough on their return leg to central London, travelling through the south side of Kingston by Portsmouth Road, High Street, Eden Street, Clarence Street, Fairfield North, London Road and Coombe Road. 1:15pm to 1:45pm 150 professional cyclists and support vehicles will pass through Kingston on the north side on their way to Surrey, using the same outbound route as outlined above. 4:45pm – 5:45pm Professional cyclists and support vehicles will pass through Kingston on the south side on their return to central London using the same inbound route as outlined above. Roads will then be fully opened as soon as it is safe to do so. Roy Thompson, Director of Place at Kingston Council, said: “It’s really exciting for the borough to be hosting yet another world-class sporting event, and showing that we are proud of our Olympic legacy. We will have the eyes of the world on Kingston yet again for this fantastic event. “Having said that, we recognise that the race will cause traffic disruption, with the route being closed for much of the day. As we did with the Olympic cycling events, the Council is working very closely with its partners and RideLondon to do all we can to minimise this in the months leading up to the event. There will be a lot of useful information on the Council and RideLondon web sites to help residents plan their weekend around the event. “It is important to remember that Kingston town centre will still be open for business so I would like to urge residents to make the most of the event by coming into Kingston and watching the races with family and friends. There will be lots of other events and activities taking place in the town centre to help you make the most of the day, and you will still be able to get a bus or train into Kingston – or you could even cycle into town.” For more information about Prudential RideLondon, visit www.PrudentialRideLondon.co.uk where you can find route maps and detailed FAQs about the event. Regular updates will also be posted on Twitter @Ride_London and on www.facebook.com/RideLondon VVoice

help when a pendant button is pressed. The alarm works as a two-way radio and they are able to hear you from anywhere in your house. In an emergency they will contact the emergency services and remain in contact with you until

they are satisfied you are safe and well. We also offer a response service for those within 5 miles of the Civic Centre.

New Malden History Whatever happened to Chemies Wine Bar? by Robin Gill

Ttransition. he late 1970s in Malden was a period of We were still getting used to being part

of the Royal Borough Of Kingston-Upon-Thames. We still had a local police station; we even had our own council offices (used an adult education centre) next to our fire station. Chance would be a fine thing It was also a time of what might have beens. Kingston Council had started a lottery in 1977 with tickets priced at 25 pence each, there was a top prize of £1000 each month from the 8000 tickets sold. A local resident from South Lane had scooped the second prize of £500 in January 1978, and tickets were selling well in newsagents and grocery stores. Unfortunately, the GLC announced that in April, they would be conducting a lottery across London with more valuable prizes (up to £4 million per year) than Kingston could afford, and even though the local lottery continued for a while, the writing was on the wall. We had a choir to be proud of at St James’ Church at Bodley Road. Lead by organist and choirmaster Terence

Goddard the boy choristers had received 10 (ten) St Nicholas Awards (Royal School of Church Music) which was the highest for any church in the country. Community spirit was still strong with the Malden and Coombe Community Association listing nearly 60 affiliated groups. The association under the chairmanship of Pat Steptoe published a “diary” detailing coming local events. A thousand copies were distributed free to households ten times a year. Busing people about There was a plan to take away the bus service, or at least part of it, with London Transport deciding to curtail buses operating the 213 route. For those of you that don’t remember, between 1963 and 1978 there were two alternate routes; the 213A which was renumbered as 213 in 1984, operated on the familiar present day route. Whereas the 213 carried on up Coombe Road, and instead of turning left into Langley Grove continued onto Traps Lane, turning left onto Coombe Lane West before joining the 213A route at Galsworthy Road. Residents on Coombe Hill pleaded with London Transport, that they needed the bus to reach the shops and station at New Malden. London Transport advised residents to shop in Kingston if they couldn’t get to New Malden. The local MP Norman Lamont took up the residents cause, stating that people in Malden would also have difficulty getting to the New Victoria Hospital. The pressure paid off, as the service was reprieved at the last minute, to be run on a trial basis with six journeys a day. Unfortunately, the reprieve was short-lived, as a survey discovered that the service was only being used by 30 passengers a day and buses stop running in October 1978. Fortunately, murders are very rare in Malden, but in January 1978 two men were charged with attacking Mr George Wells in the hallway of his house in Northcote Road. Mr Wells who was 89 years old and the nephew of HG Wells had his wallet taken during the incident, and died later in Kingston Hospital. Return of the fountain Good news arrived in April 1978, when it was announced that New Malden was to have a new fourteen foot high fountain, 45 years after the original column was knocked down. It was to be based on a design similar to the first fountain. The erection was to be supervised by the local Rotary Club (who distributed around 16,000 leaflets), would cost about £2000, to be paid for by donations. One donation came from an elderly gentleman aged 90, who remembered

the building of the first fountain in 1894. The fountain made from fibreglass was to be built by Adrian Marchant of Chestnut Grove. (The new structure was completed in 1982 and cost £23,000). The proposed leisure centre in Blagdon Road was first discussed in 1978 with plans for ten squash courts, a licensed club, public swimming pool, and a community hall. (Building began eight years later, and was completed on 1987). Identity crisis Residents were concerned that as a result of this new building, they could lose the former council offices which were being used as an adult education centre. A meeting of residents worried that Malden was losing its identity since becoming part of Kingston, wanted the building to be used as a community hall, but the council assured them that householder’s views would always be taken into consideration when any decision was made. (Permission was granted in 1986 for the demolition of the council offices, fire station, and institute, and the building of a supermarket). On a personal note, the local elections saw a new councillor from Malden elected to the Guildhall. Mrs Julie Gill standing for the first time in St James’ ward received the most votes of any candidate in the whole of Malden and Coombe. She was to sit on the council for four years.

The council itself decided that as some drivers were getting confused between High Street New Malden, and High Street Kingston, all road signs in the future would show the district (New/Old Malden or Coombe) as well. Thirty years later (2007) they were replaced again. This time the street names were accompanied by the first part of the post code (KT3). The council also decided in October 1978, to close off access to Westbury and Thetford Roads for motorists turning left from Malden Road. Residents had been complaining for some time that cars were using this route as a short cut to Kingston Road, and using excessive speed on residential roads. The regulation came into force in July 1980. In 1978, disabled shoppers were able to enjoy shopping at leisure as various shops opened late in the evening near Christmas for their convenience. These retailers included Cannings, Woolworths, Avalon China Shop, Elizabeth Anne Florists, and Tudor Williams. Clubs Malden Wanderers celebrated their centenary in 1979, with a dedicated Cricket Week in the summer, and a special club day at the beginning of July. The club arranged for specially made ties, sweaters, T-Shirts, and badges to be available for the anniversary all with the club’s stag emblem. There was also an excellent book by Michael Burns detailing the history of the club. Over 1000 balloons were released, and there was music and dancing in the evening with a bar and refreshments.

Institutions The beginning of March 1979 saw the opening of the new Fire Station in Burlington Road. The buildings included a breathing apparatus training centre, heat and humidity chambers, a crawling gallery, changing rooms and a classroom. The original Fire Station which stood next to the council offices, now stood vacant with residents asking for it to be turned into a mini shopping piazza, or exhibition centre. In August 1979 the GLC announced they had no further use for the building which was nearly 75 years old, and offered it to Kingston Council. New Malden Library hosted a small display in 1979 celebrating its golden jubilee (50th Birthday) after the first local library was opened in Park Road. The display showed the history of the library from the 20s to the 70s. Popular Pubs The Metropolitan Police put forward plans in August 1979 to close the local police station at night. Night time closures across London would enable sixty more officers to be available for patrol duty. The plan was strongly resisted by residents, who felt that any closure could lead to increased vandalism in the area. (The station closed in 1998, then reopened in 2001 as a dog handling centre, before closing for good in 2005). It is now Weatherspoons pub “The Watchman”.

Finally, two of our local hostelries were in the news, and it was cheers all round when The Royal Oak was voted Top Pub in London in the Evening Standard pub of the year contest for 1979. The drinks were on the house at the end of September, when publican Bryan Taylor welcomed cartoonist and satirist Willie Rushton one of the judges, who unveiled a celebratory plaque on the outside of the building. Further down Coombe Road towards the railway station was Chemies Wine Bar which was on the shortlist for the Evening News Wine Bar Of The Year. Wine bars were becoming more popular in the late seventies especially amongst those aged in their early twenties who were looking for something different from their local pint. Chemies was one of the best, and prided itself on its wide range of wines on offer. I don’t know whether Chemies was successful in the contest, and would like to know what finally happened to the bar. Please get in touch if you remember… VVoice

View from the City The Lost Decade?

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

We will in all

likelihood look back and see this period as the “lost decade” for the UK, although I suspect we will not be alone. After all we had ten years of boom and thus, as is usual with such cycles, we shall have ten years of lean (as in meat – horse or otherwise). There are shades of the Old Testament about it, but hopefully we won’t have Moses turning up soon (mind you he probably wouldn’t qualify under the immigration rules anyway, unless it turns out that he was in fact Romanian).

However the term “lost decade” is somewhat pejorative, as it would seem to imply that little or nothing will occur and that is certainly not the case. In fact there is a lot going on but it just rarely seems to feel like it. We are fed GDP figures which seem to become less credible with every quarter and have political leaders who don’t engender confidence or exude capability and credibility. The result is that we spend less, companies invest less, and there seems to be a national attitude of tired resignation, reflected and often underscored by a media happy to wallow in torrid tales or economic torpor. Oh dear, what a state we are in. Actually I think this is twaddle. There is in fact a great deal of effort and resource being applied but little that seems to break into the national awareness. We have seen a rise in savings and are also seeing corporate cash positions looking healthier. However of course neither are getting any real returns on the cash pool as real interest rates for any savings are negative. So here is an untapped reservoir of money waiting to be tapped but wholly dependent on the key word to release their investment - which of course is confidence.

Now it may just be that we are starting to see a change. Some companies are now finding these chests of guilders somewhat of an embarrassment. You will recall Apple’s rejection of the lawsuit from the hedge fund manager David Einhorn, in which he was trying to force the company to handover to its shareholders (or owners!) some of the $137bn of cash. He accused the company of a “depression era mentality” - which of course was another “lost decade”. There are many public companies sitting with large cash surpluses and the estimate for listed UK companies stands currently at around £800bn - that’s more than the UK government’s total annual expenditure. Then there are the savings of the much put upon middle class. With low deposit interest rates, chaffing inflation and, for many, lower real value pay levels, it’s not surprising that few are confident. For those with savings the period has been awful, unless they were willing to accept higher risks of other investments. However would they? The answer I find is yes, but only if they were given the fortitude to do so - and this comes from the leadership. With the Budget coming up next month, there is an opportunity for the Chancellor to provide such leadership and inspiration. However to date I have not been impressed as the previous speeches seem to have been aimed at the opposite benches rather than

the spending populous. Political pomposity should be replaced by practical purpose. Clubs

New Malden Jazz Club W ho said Traditional Jazz is dead? It most certainly is not in New Malden

- or perhaps more accurately in Old Malden, where the New Malden Jazz Club holds its weekly meetings at The Manor, which is next to Malden Manor station. The club has been in existence for many years, starting life in the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse), moving to the Brewster (now The Willow Tree), and thence to The Berrylands Hotel in Surbiton before moving to its current home, where it has been comfortably established for several years. The regular band is the Magna Jazz Band, which has had a long and varied career since its formation in the middle 1950s by clarinettist Brian White. The band is

hugely experienced and has featured countless American musicians as guest stars during the lifetime of the club, and its members are known all over the world, thanks to personal visits and the many recordings they have made. They enjoy themselves so much that they would almost play for nothing, but of course they do incur expenses and so there is an admission charge. You will find that drinks are at normal pub prices. There is a warm atmosphere at The Manor, and the club members are always happy to welcome new friends into the family. The sessions are every Thursday, with the band kicking off the music at 8.30. Why not go along and enjoy? VVoice Brian White, leader

The Better Life The Zen of Chickens

B e in the moment. Chickens seem to have a very short attention span,

unless they’re on the trail of a worm. However, they’re actually demonstrating an ability to detach from the superficial, which – to a chicken – is anything inedible. Be curious about the world. Chickens are life’s little explorers. They can find that hole in the fence which I blocked with some feeble bamboo canes and never got round to repairing properly, the last wild strawberry, or a snail who thought hiding behind the coop was a foolproof survival strategy. Celebrate your successes. The commotion a chicken makes before, while and after laying an egg is surely one of Nature’s cruellest jokes. Short of ringing a dinner bell, it’s the most efficient way of summoning any fox within a two-mile radius. Despite that, I defy any smallholder not to be impressed at the ‘scraps, grain and grit in, followed by egg and fertiliser poop out’ magic trick performed most days. Be how you feel. Our cat learned early on that it’s wise

to keep out of the path of a broody, moody hen. She also discovered they can run surprisingly fast and launch themselves at unwitting felines. Me? I learned that the term ‘an affectionate peck’ doesn’t apply to poultry. Make time to relax. When they’re not eating, advertising their egg-laying prowess, playing tug-of-war with snails or enjoying dirt baths, chickens like nothing better than sitting still and watching the world go by. Or, if it’s a sunny day, a spot of Chicken Yoga might be in order. You can forget about downward dog, cat posture or doing the cobra. For chickens, the yogic routine is a few luxurious wing stretches, some flexing of the neck and then it’s time to sprawl out in the warm. And if it’s cold outside? They snuggle up together in what I call the ‘tea cosies’ posture. Eat your greens – and give peas a chance. Impressionable children the world over would have no qualms about devouring chard, lettuce or spinach (to name but three) if they had a chicken for a role model. And, being life’s gourmet connoisseurs, chickens will also happily try tomatoes, grapes, porridge, roast potatoes, bananas, raisins and spaghetti. Although someone we once met, who declared that she fed her hens leftover bacon and eggs did, I feel, overstep the mark a little. The early bird really does get the worm. Although the slightly delayed bird may succeed in taking it off you, if you don’t pay attention. Opportunity not only knocks, it grabs too. Care for your environment. Once again, chickens lead by example. Whether it’s pulling up the weeds*, providing some essential pest control or aerating the soil, chickens are constantly on the lookout for ways to contribute. * A word of caution - an unchecked chicken gets a little over enthusiastic in its garden duties! Play to your strengths. Chickens don’t fly or glide and their singing isn’t up to much. But...they don’t waste food, or an opportunity, and they make eggcellent companions. By Derek Thompsonpepper. Tree care Bogus Tree Surgeons

Ihasn neighbouring areas there been a spate of illegal “tree

surgeons” accessing customers by cold calling on your doorstep or via mass leafleting. This article may help you in ensuring that the arborists you employ are legal, safe and proficient for the task in hand. A simple checklist is advised so you can screen the possible illegal operators:1. All tree surgeons must have licenses that are less than 5 years old. The main authority to train and issue the licenses are NPTC and LANTRA, for ground treeworks you must see CS30 and 31 licenses. Most treeworks require some climbing so higher level CS38 and 39 licenses are needed. If these cannot be shown to you then it is likely that

the operator is not insured or skilled to do any treeworks. I liken this to you employing a gas fitter at your home with no Gas Safe registration. At R J Tree Services we employ graduates that have a formal arboricultural qualification such as an Advanced Diploma in addition to these licenses. 2. Insurance cover for both public and employers liability must be presented to you. This covers you for any damage or injury that could occur on your land during the procedure. We have seen several instances of trees felled across fences etc where the “tree surgeon” could not climb the tree so took the risk of a straight fell rather than dismantle a tree in pieces. 3. A reputable company should be able to correctly identify your tree species and the appropriate time of the year for surgery, quite often we split works through the year in a garden so it maximises the health and vitality of a tree following surgery. A well informed website can confirm just how knowledgeable the advice given to you really is. 4. For surgery to trees the range of options should be explained to you with the benefits of each described clearly. This can range from crown lifts, crown thins, pollarding to crown reductions given

in percentage blocks of usually 10% . I dislike the term “lopping” which can often mean cutting off the top to a tree leaving no shape to the remaining crown!!! 5. Never accept a doorstep quote to be done the same day, this type of pressure selling is a form of bullying. The consequences of treeworks can last years so you need time to consider options and seek additional advice. 6. Never pay a deposit in advance of works or a part payment during works. Upon completion of the job a proper invoice should be presented to you. 7. Check that the workers on the day are properly equipped with the correct safety gear. This should include chainsaw trousers and boots, a helmet with ear muffs and a visor; if anyone appears in jeans and a ladder to access your tree the warning light should be on! Some recent scams in Berrylands have included a bogus tree surgeon taking the top out of a leylandii conifer and throwing the branches into a neighbours garden then collecting a cash payment before the angry neighbour turned up on the doorstep! A second example with a pensioner involved demands for extra cash payments after the job had been started because of “unforeseen circumstances”. My basic advise is for you to take your time in deciding works don’t be pressured on the doorstep by people you cannot verify can do the job, try to follow a recommendation and check all the licenses and insurance. The success of the family firm takes precedence over everything… even happiness. In an exciting move Smack Family Robinson has been relocated from Whitley Bay to Petersham and the surrounding area. The Robinsons have run a successful, if a bit dodgy, family business since the 1960s. They have a comfortable house in the suburbs and expensive cars in the drive. But the younger generation aren’t like their dad. And the police are getting interested. Richard Bean is one of Britain’s most successful comic playwrights. His many plays include Toast, Harvest (Royal Court) and the sensational awardwinning National Theatre, West End and Broadway hit, One Man, Two Guvnors.

Clubs

Kingstonian FC Iseason t’s half-time in 2012/13 for

your local football team, Kingstonian, and they are still in contention for a late season challenge for promotion to the Conference South league. So what of the season to date? Results were positive for the first two months of the season with only one league defeat in the first two months of the season, a 1-0 loss at Bury Town in the depths of East Anglia. At this point Kingstonian hit the dizzy heights of the pinnacle of the Ryman Isthmian League. However, this didn’t last long as the team came down to earth with a bang, losing at closest rivals, Wealdstone, despite taking a 2-0 lead. Since this setback, results have been mixed, and one result hasn’t even been decided, as Kingstonian played an evening game at Whitehawk (Brighton) which was abandoned because of floodlight failure fifteen minutes from the end, with Kingstonian leading 2-0. Other highlights of the ‘first-half’ were a magnificent win at Lowestoft who were riding high in the league at the time, 3-1, a place that not many other teams have reaped rewards; and progression through the lesser stages of the FA Trophy, a competition that Kingstonian won twice just over ten years ago. However, as you progress in the competition, the opposition gets stronger, and a tough home draw against Dartford, a team from two leagues above Kingstonian, put paid to further Kingstonian progress. Looking forward to the second half of the season, Kingstonian will have to push on with more consistency in order to take the League Championship, or to make one of the four play-off spots. Attractive games lie ahead with the visits of Hastings United, who progressed through to the 3rd round of the FA Cup before being defeated by Middlesborough, on Monday 11th March, and with Bury Town, riding high in the table, who Kingstonian will look to avenge their first defeat earlier in the season, when they visit Kingsmeadow on 16th March. Current league-leaders Whitehawk are due at Kingsmeadow on Saturday 6th April, in what is already being described as Kingstonian’s ‘make or break’ game. All the upcoming fixtures and other information can on the Ks can be found at www.kingstonian.com.

38

So if you are free on a Saturday afternoon, or for one of Kingstonian’s evening games, get along to Kingsmeadow and get behind the team. The players have described the home crowd as their 12th man and really appreciate the support they get from the fans. In order to encourage the youngsters along, it’s ‘kids for free’ at Kingsmeadow, providing that they are under 16 and can provide proof of age. VVoice

Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken. Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water. Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over. Tip: Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops. VVoice

Seed Sowing on the Cheap by Pippa Greenwood Iperfume f you want your garden full of colour, interest, and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UKmade Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood. com. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil.

44

Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products. VVoice

Recycling Metal matters

M etal matters when it comes to recycling Kingston Council is playing its part in the

‘MetalMatters’ campaign to encourage people to recycle more metal packaging such as tins, cans, aerosols, foil metal bottle tops and jar lids. Leaflets will be dropping through local letterboxes over the next few weeks to advise householders that, when it comes to recycling, metal really does matter. The leaflets remind people that every piece of metal packaging put out for recycling will be used again and again for years to come. And every time it’s recycled it saves energy, cuts carbon emissions – and cuts costs to taxpayers, as recycling is far cheaper than landfill. The campaign is being delivered through the South London Waste Partnership – a group of four councils (Kingston, Croydon, Merton and Sutton) that are working together to provide improved waste management services to local people. Councillor Derek Osbourne, Kingston Council leader and Chair of the South London Waste Partnership Joint Committee, said: “Recycling one tonne of aluminium saves nine tonnes of CO2 emissions - the equivalent of driving nearly 3000 miles. Every tonne of recycled steel saves 40 per cent of the water required for virgin steel, saves half a tonne of coal, and uses only a quarter of the energy. “Whilst most residents already recycle their food and drink cans, the Metal Matters campaign highlights the fact that sweet and biscuit tins, empty aerosols, foil trays, kitchen foil, metal bottle tops and jar lids can also be recycled.” The cost of running the campaign is being met by Recycle for London, Viridor (the company that provides recycling, composting and residual waste treatment services to the Partnership) and a partnership made up of organisations and businesses from the metal packaging and recycling industry; it is being managed on their behalf by Alupro (the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation). Alupro Executive Director Rick Hindley said: “We have seen the Metal Matters campaign deliver fantastic results in other parts of the country, but this is the first time the campaign will have been run anywhere in London, so I’m excited to see what difference it can make.” Did you know.. • Recycling a tonne of steel saves 1.5 tonnes of iron ore and reduces CO2 emissions by 80 per cent • Recycling a tonne of aluminium saves 9 tonnes of C02

emissions and 4 tonnes of bauxite – the raw material from which aluminium is made • Metal can be recycled without any loss of quality or strength because its atomic structure doesn’t change when melted – metal can be recycled indefinitely • Making aluminium cans from recycled metal is 20 times more energy efficient than using ‘primary’ metal • Recycling seven cans saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours • In as little as six weeks, the empty can you put in your recycling could be transformed and back on the supermarket shelf. Under 5s

Play is a child’s work A recent poll carried out by Huggies suggests that one of the top 5 regrets of the 2,000 parents polled was not having played more with their children during early childhood, a fact that will not come as a surprise to any modern parent. Whether at work, chasing clients and tackling deadlines, or closer to home, juggling the ins and outs of household management, caring for friends and family, and trying to maintain something that loosely resembles a social life, the fact is that on the unending ‘to do’ list of everyday life, simply playing with our children is often forced out of the way by overflowing e-mail inboxes and laundry baskets. All too often, playtime appears to be a ‘luxury’ that we just cannot find the time for. Far from being an unnecessary extravagance, however, play is becoming an increasingly central aspect of child development theory, and its importance is being emphasised by paediatricians, psychologists and childcare professionals right across the board. This is something Susannah Alexander, a local resident and Director of Gymboree UK feels passionately about and she’s recently opened Gymboree in New Malden. She opened her first Gymboree in Surbiton when her

youngest son Zach was 16 months. Fast forward 5 years and with both her boys at school locally, she has finally brought Gymboree to New Malden, something she has longed to do for a while. The benefits of play for both children and their parents have long been acknowledged, but the necessity of play can so easily be overlooked. ‘Play is a child’s work,’ renowned child psychologist Jean Piaget famously stated, and this is particularly true of pre-schoolers; not yet having started formal education, opportunities to play provide opportunities to learn. A child gains physical and social confidence through structured play, as he or she begins to develop key skills such as team-building, creativity, co-operation, turntaking and communication. It can be exciting to watch as your little one’s personality begins to emerge in their interaction with new faces in a new environment. Perhaps most importantly, though, playing with our children facilitates bonding and deepens relationships, building memories of mutually enjoyable experiences of fun and learning that our little ones will take with them into adulthood. Children are more likely to explore, to rise to challenges, and to achieve new things within the safety and security provided by mummy or daddy’s helping hand and gentle words of encouragement. At Gymboree, parents and carers are involved in every session, enabling them to play a vital and active role in their child’s learning and development. Play & Learn classes are available from newborn upwards. VVoice

Safer Neighbourhoods New Direct Route For Reporting Fraud

N ew Malden residents who feel they may have been the victim of a ‘scam’ or fraud now have an immediate route to reporting concerns. The Metropolitan Police Service has become the latest force to join a national government scheme designed to improve the way fraud is investigated.

Action fraud is a one stop shop Action Fraud is the ‘one-stop’ national reporting centre for fraud, holding primary responsibility for the coordination of the vast majority of fraud and internet crime by dealing with the reporting, collation and, where possible, investigation referrals. To date it has already helped more than 300,000 people deal with the consequences of fraud and internet crime. They have also taken over 126,000 crime reports since December 2009. When reporting a fraud to Action Fraud, a national crime reference number will be generated and the case will be referred to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) where it is analysed along with a wealth of additional information from government departments, financial institutions and other large organisations. The NFIB is run by City of London Police - the lead force for fraud in the UK.

Having this central collection point for crime reports will enable a much clearer national picture on the main issues and allow seemingly unrelated incidents from around the country to be linked through analysis, which will assist in identifying networks of criminals. Once information has been assessed, the NFIB will then send to police forces or other agencies packages for investigation ONLY where there is actionable intelligence or viable lines of inquiry available for the force to pursue. Every allegation will be recorded Every allegation reported to Action Fraud will be recorded and the victim given a reference number. Whilst it will not be possible to investigate every report that comes in, each one will assist the NFIB in building up a clear intelligence picture about fraud and fraudsters. This in turn will enable them help to prevent other people falling victim to fraud and public and private sector bodies to better protect themselves against the threat posed by fraud.

Vital to take action It significantly affects people’s lives so it is vital that we take action to prevent people falling foul of devious criminals. The most convenient way to report to Action Fraud is online. Online reporting of fraud and internet crime is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through www.actionfraud.police.uk. Telephone reporting is also available on 0300 123 2040 - opening hours apply. If a crime is established, victims will be provided with a crime reference number. Ring 999 if immediate response is needed If an immediate police response is required, ie. where the suspect is very near and / or the victim is at risk, the public should continue to dial 999. Beauty Eyebrows

Tyounger here’s a quick, simple and easy way to look years and all you’ll need is a pair of tweezers.

Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful. The wrong shape, size or even colour eyebrows can have a dramatically different effect however and leave you looking permanently surprised, confused or angry so it’s very important to think before you pluck. Work With What You Have The key is to work with your natural brow shape - whatever that may be. Some people are lucky enough to have brows that naturally sweep up to an arch, whereas others are born with much straighter eyebrows and need to do a little more work to create the desired look. Trimming You might not think it, but eyebrow hair is often quite long. A little trimming is essential for allowing the hair to lie nicely and fall into shape easily. Remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up - with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends. Next, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. To finish, brush the hair into place. Your eyebrows should already be looking much better. Time To Tweeze Tweezing can be a little painful at first, so it’s a good idea to open up your pores before you start by holding a warm facecloth over your brows. Ensure that you’re working in good natural light and determine where to begin. It’s good to start by holding a pencil vertically against the side of your nose and observe where it meets the brow - this gives a guide to where your eyebrows should begin. Pluck any hair away that grows before this point. Take a few hairs at a time and do the same on your other brow. Looking straight ahead, hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of the iris of your eye - the point at which the pencil is lying is where the arch of your brow should peak. To create the best shape for your brow, gradually tweeze a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Concentrate on keeping them looking even. To finish, place your pencil back against your nostril and this time extend it diagonally to the outer corner

of your eye. This is where your brow should be at its thinnest. Pluck from the arch to this point, tapering the line gradually, so that it is at its thinnest at the far corner. Remember that the fuller your brows are, the more youthful you’ll look so work slowly and steadily, tweezing one hair at a time. Stand back from the mirror regularly to check how the shape is progressing. Define Your New Shape You can enhance your new shape by applying a little colour to make your eyebrows really stand out. If your hair is fair, choose either a brow powder or pencil that’s a shade lighter than your hair colour. For dark hair, choose one that’s a shade darker. Gently sweep the product over the brow hair and set using a clear eyebrow gel.. By Helen Taylor VVoice
