Dear Readers

Even though the temperature is ‘a wee bit cooler’ (as the BBC’s Scottish Carole would say) than we enjoyed a few weeks ago, I am loving the smell of washing fresh from the line. It really makes a difference doesn’t it. Laundry has never made it very high up on my list of favourite things so it’s always good to find a positive angle. During the winter months washing can literally swamp me and, once I lose control.. well.. it all goes downhill from there. Do you know the feeling? So how do you get organised with housework and washing? For many years (much to the frustration of Mr S) I have bought numerous bags/wicker baskets in an attempt to compartmentalise ‘stuff’. It has been somewhat of a running joke every Ikea trip that I make that I he actually WANTS me to purchase MORE of them (not!). Visiting Ikea, well you either love or hate the place – me and my girls fall into the former category, although the temptation of meatballs & chips in the café, or ice cream after the cash tills may be more of a pull for the younger members of the family! I have visited a few different stores in my time, Dubai in 1998, Rome in 2004 – a tragic bow to my belt of being an Ikea tourist! Actually not quite that sad – on both occasions I was visiting friends and was just accompanying them on a day to day shopping trip. Roll on though to April 2015 when my friend and I took our girls for a budget couple of days in Paris to see the sights. On our way home to the Chunnel we decided a cheap and cheerful meal was called for, so sought out the large Ikea we’d spotted on the way into Paris. The suggestion of boulettes de viande et frites was greeted with large cheers from the girls and it was with great excitement that we went through the large ‘Entrée’ door and up to the restaurant. Much to our dismay, however, (mon dieu!) the restaurant was closed for renovation and the temporary replacement was a sandwich café. Talk about a massive let down! Needless to say, we scooted round the store in record time looking for the ‘Sortie’. Note to self – making assumptions can sometimes lead to disappointment. Anyway, if you have any tips on how to declutter ruthlessly please let me know. I am in need…! I hope you enjoy a good read and also see what our local businesses have to offer. If you’ve any feedback on how they’re doing, or have any ideas for future editions, news or views to share then please get in touch. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until June, best wishes

New Malden History Political Representation by Robin Gill Malden and Coombe has played its part in the parliamentary world over the years albeit indirectly. John Major lived in Longfellow Road Worcester Park as a youngster, Sir Winston Churchill played polo at Motspur Park and Golf at Coombe Hill, Stanley Baldwin opened the Kingston Bypass, The Earl Of Rosebery attended horse racing in New Malden. William Gladstone often visited Coombe to recuperate from illness, and of course Lord Liverpool lived at Coombe House. Our local MPs have also held two of the three great offices of state; Norman Lamont as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Sir George Cave as Home Secretary. But, Malden has also had its political controversies at local level.

Count on us Whilst the forthcoming General Election is predicted to be the closest in living memory, it is doubtful whether it will compare to an election to the Malden and Coombe District Council in April 1903. In those days there were four representatives from each ward elected to the council, and whilst in this contest the first three past the post were elected, the fourth place was keenly fought over. After two hours it was announced that Mr George Craven Parnaby from Chestnut Grove had received 216 votes, whereas both Mr John Chilman from Penrith Road, and Mr Charles Bennett Kerley of Thetford Road had received 215 votes. Both Mr Chilman and Mr Kerley asked for a recount, and as a result Parnaby recorded 217 votes and Chilman and Kerley were again tied but on 219 votes each. Chilman and Kerley drew lots to decide who was elected, with the returning officer who had the casting vote agreeing to give it in favour of Chilman who won the draw. But another recount was then requested, and this time Parnaby received 216 votes, with Chilman and Kerley on 214. A third recount was asked for, and Parnaby’s vote was reduced to 215 while Chilman and Kerley remained on 214. A fourth recount was called for at the County Court in Kingston under Judge Arthur Russell which showed Parnaby back on 216 votes and Chilman and Kerley on 215. So

audience were advised that a man had died in the hall, and in the circumstances the meeting had to close. The unfortunate man was Frederick Earl, aged 45 Malden’s popular bandmaster, from Northcote Road, who had left his seat near the edge of the platform to try to quell the disturbance at the rear of the hall. Several punches had been thrown, and Earl had been seized by the throat while trying to force somebody to leave. When peace had been restored, Earl climbed onto a chair and told the assembly that it was “All Quiet” and then collapsed on the floor, and was carried outside, where he died after a few minutes; his body was taken to the nearby mortuary for an inquest. He left a widow and five sons. He was a bricklayer/ labourer by trade.

finally, George Craven Parnaby was elected onto the council. Incident at the institute Mr Parnaby was the chairman of the meeting held nearly three years later at the institute (was Graham Spicer now part of Waitrose) on Friday 12th January. The pre General Election meeting was called to hear Robert Whyte one of the candidates for the Kingston Division (which included Malden) speak. Before the meeting could start, there was a disturbance at the back of the hall which degenerated into a fight, and the police had to be called to restore order. But when Mr Whyte had only just started his speech, he and the

The inquest The inquest took place before the coroner Dr Michael Taylor on Tuesday 16th January at the council offices (Waitrose). Both the Conservatives and Liberals had started a fund to help the widow and family, and sent representatives to the inquest. Frederick’s widow Emily identified the body as being her late husband. He had served twelve years in the army in India, Afghanistan, and Egypt, and had caught

malaria in India and was hospitalised thirteen times and had suffered a fit in 1898. He had abstained from alcohol for the last 23 years. He had gone to the meeting especially to hear Mr Whyte speak. He was not prone to excitement, but was a man of strong principles. Mrs Earl stated that she could not think of anybody in Malden who would want to harm him, and his death must have been caused in the heat of the moment, and she felt no resentment towards anybody. Leonard Crandley, who lived in the same road as the Earl family and was a fellow member of the New Malden Band, said he had gone to the meeting with Mr Earl, and they sat together in front of the platform. The room filled up, and there must have been around 300 people in attendance. Early on voices were heard from the back of the hall, and Earl and Cranley went towards the disturbance to ask them to quieten down. The man who appeared to be the ringleader made an objectionable remark towards Earl who remonstrated with him. It was then he was seized by the throat, and others joined in the scuffle, one of them Benjamin Plumbridge from Burlington Road managed to loosen the grip on Earl’s throat. It was only after Earl secured a promise from the troublemaker that things quieten down.

8

The antagonist, James Coates Wy*tt lived in Mount Pleasant Road and was a butcher by trade. He denied being drunk and threatening to “throttle Earl”. He had arrived at the meeting alone, and had not arranged to meet others there. All his interruptions were intended “in a friendly way” with a bit of chipping (in) and “good humoured chaff”. He had seen some men heading towards him, and witnessed a bit of shoving around him, but had not grabbed Mr Earl by the collar. There was such a “hubbub” that he couldn’t hear what was being said, and he certainly did not swear at Mr Earl. Mr Parnaby felt the whole thing had been prearranged and likened the fracas to a “scrimmage at a football match” and called many times for the speaker to be shown “fair play”. He identified Wy*tt as the main culprit. William Bright from West Barnes Lane who was also at the meeting, picked out Wy*tt as the ringleader, and also heard him swear. The police were called, but when PC Knowles and his colleagues arrived all was quiet. Knowles helped to carry Earl outside when he collapsed. Earl was on the doorstep of the building when Dr George Cowen arrived, but was already dead. Death was from heart failure, he declared. But it was possible that the disturbance contributed towards the attack.

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

A verdict of “Death from natural causes” was recorded, but the jury criticised all those who had taken part in the fracas, stating that the whole reason they were there, was to prevent the meeting carrying on. Unfortunately, as Earl had spent much of his adult life abroad, and had become liable to contract illnesses which could affect his organs, it was impossible to say for certain that the incidents of that Friday evening had contributed towards his death, other than by the excitement caused by the fight. He had been told by others, that Wy*tt had been under the influence of drink, and had acted “like a maniac”. Funeral for a friend Mr Earl was buried in Kingston Cemetery on 18th January. The atmosphere in New Malden on that Thursday was understandably gloomy. The procession left Northcote Road at 2pm and headed to the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church where a service was held. The procession was headed by both the Malden and Coombe and Kingston military bands. These were followed by the Surbiton Hill Working Men’s Band and members of the band of the East Surrey Regiment. Representatives of many other organisations followed. The coffin was carried on the Malden Fire Brigade manual engine and was covered with the Union flag on which were placed the cap, uniform, and medals of the deceased from his service with the East Surreys.

Many of the other church ministers in New Malden assisted in the service, and the mourners included the family and Mr Whyte the speaker on that Friday. The church was full, and afterwards the procession proceeded to Kingston cemetery where the Rev Aurelius Jullion from Holy Trinity Church conducted a short service at the graveside. There were many people present, and along the route from church to cemetery others stood in silent respect. The bells at Holy Trinity rang, and the flag at the Council Offices was at half mast. Mr Earl was described by the minister of the Congregational Church (URC) as “a typical British workman, who, by his cheerfulness and industry, his temperance and godliness, commanded the esteem of all classes.” It is often said that the right to vote for women, and for all classes, was hard fought through history. It seems that even after the franchise was granted (at least for men); some still wanted to dispute the right to vote for whoever you wished.

People Robin Gill I’m delighted to share the news with you that our very own history writer Robin Gill was recently the proud recipient of a Mayor’s Community Award at the Guildhall. Robin has been writing monthly articles to the Village Voice since 2006 – how he comes up with such interesting content on such a regular basis always amazes me. That’s close to 100 articles!! Robin has also put his research abilities to good use regarding the War Memorial in Malden. He provided the majority of names of those men

and women who died serving the British Forces in World War Two. He subsequently discovered a previously unknown Victoria Cross recipient from the First World War, whose family had lived in the Malden and Coombe area. Robin researched and produced a list of civilians who died in the Malden area in the Second World War. With the help of others (myself included!), a civic service commemorating these citizens was held at Christ Church in 2010 under the banner of ‘Malden Blitz’. All this research has enabled the names of these worthy individuals to be added to the local war memorial. Robin is also a founder member of the Malden and Coombe Heritage Society and has been the secretary of the society since its inception in 2012. Robin was presented with his award by our lovely Mayor Ken Smith who sent me this: Robin got his much deserved award for his work for charity. When reading the application from his sponsor I could only think what a wonderful individual he is. Hours of his spare time each week given freely in order to make someone’s life, who he will never meet, better and bearable. And this over 30 years. A well deserved Mayors award that I found humbling to give.” “Not part of the award but being a reader of the Village Voice over many years I am also so impressed by his contribution on the history of our area without which we would all be the poorer – he has kept us all transfixed and waiting for his next article . I’m sure all readers would like to join with me in congratulating Robin on this worthy Mayors Award . Cllr Ken Smith JP Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

ClariVein® is a ut walk in walk o wing procedure allo to you to return ies regular activit the next day.

Get your legs ready for summer - ClariVein® Many people suffer from varicose veins at some point in their life which can cause significant pain and discomfort. A revolutionary procedure ClariVein®, available at only a handful of hospitals in the UK has been developed to treat varicose veins, more quickly and simply than previous traditional procedures. This pioneering treatment allows you to return to regular activities the very next day and is now available at Spire St. Anthony’s Hospital.

Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

Varicose veins are caused by a backflow of blood in the superficial veins near to the skin. This is due to the valves in the vein becoming weakened or damaged over time. Blood collects in the affected vein, causing it to become engorged or twisted in appearance. Once the vein is damaged, it does not tend to recover without treatment and will usually get worse over time. Symptoms Symptoms of varicose veins will differ between individuals but can include: • Blue or purple discolourations under the skin • Aching or discomfort in the legs • Swelling of the ankles • Itchiness of the legs Treatment - Clarivein® Treatment of vein problems has seen significant advances throughout the past decade, and it can be difficult to keep up with modern developments. It is therefore crucial to visit a hospital where the latest medical innovations are available via world class consultants and state-of-theart equipment.

We are now offering ClariVein®, a newly available, minimally-invasive treatment. Unlike traditional vein stripping, ClariVein® can be performed using a local anaesthetic. A rotating catheter is inserted into the affected vein(s) which releases a drug to seal the vein from within. The vein will then dissolve over a period of approximately six weeks. You will be advised to wear a compression stocking for one week following treatment, and can return to regular activities (including driving) immediately after the procedure. Prof Loftus specialises in the treatment of varicose veins and holds regular clinics at Spire St Anthony’s on alternate Tuesday afternoons. If you would like to book an appointment please call us on: 020 8335 4678.

Clubs It’s not just cricket... As MaldenWanderers gear up for the new season, Steve Morgan shares KT3’s best-kept sporting secret April is the cruellest month. So reckoned TS Eliot, who clearly should have put in more time at winter nets. Yes, it’s that time of the year when grown men, or overgrown schoolboys in some cases, don their whites in pursuit of the ‘crimson rambler’. Some of us (depending on those nets) might even get to enjoy the sound of leather on willow every now and again . At Malden Wanderers CC – 136 years young, but arguably KT3’s best-kept sporting secret (yes, it is left just before the garage as you head down Traps Lane) – this is a big season. Our first XI, under new skipper James Wackett, will be doing its damnedest to regain Surrey Championship Premier League status – an accolade currently held by our twos and threes in their respective formats. At the other end of the scale, our nomadic fourth team is – as this is written – still trying to secure a regular home for its mixture of old stagers and young hopefuls press-ganged from the cream of a thriving Colts section now numbering 200. The game’s biggest problem these days – money aside – is the retention of players. With work hours ever increasing, giving up a Saturday to cricket is a labour of love. However, writing as someone who came back to the game after 30 years away, I can confidently claim that it is precisely this commitment and the value of the friendships it brings that makes the game unique. It is something we are working very hard on. There are few better feelings than returning to the clubhouse on Saturday evening for our four XIs to run through who did well, who had a shocker, and air those traditional excuses – ‘a big score is just around the corner’/ ‘that was never out’ / ‘we never get fair decisions at [insert name of opposition’.

Care Did you know that more than half of people aged 65 + have been targeted by fraudsters? A survey undertaken by Age UK reveals the alarming extent to which older people have been targeted – and defrauded – by scam artists. With the new pension freedoms coming into force, peopled aged 55+ are likely to be increasingly targeted by fraudsters carrying out a whole range of scams, including befriending/’grooming’ potential victims and isolating them from friends and family, impersonating a bank or the police and even threats and intimidation. We at Age UK Sutton have experienced first-hand the devastation that fraudsters cause among their victims and their families. We have seen multiple cases of older people losing vast sums of money to con men, and the serious consequences this has on people’s physical and mental health, as well as their relationships and finances. Opportunit ies for fraudsters are increasing and more people are at risk, which is why awareness is vital, so that all people – regardless of age – feel equipped to challenge and report a potential scam. The top tips below are a good start to educate yourself and your loved ones and protect yourselves against scams. 1. Don’t rush into anything If you think you’ve been offered a great deal, don’t agree to it immediately. A genuine offer is unlikely to require an instant decision. Ask your family and friends what they think or contact a local advice agency for help. 2. Know who’s on your doorstep If you answer the door to someone you don’t know, ask for an identity card and check it. You could phone the company they represent to check who they are. For vulnerable older people, the Nominated Neighbour scheme is useful for ensuring they do not have to deal with doorstep callers. 3. Be wise to cold call scams Ignore unsolicited invitations such as letters, emails or phone calls offering a brilliant investment or saying you’ve won a lottery. Ignore them and never reply - it shows your details are active which will encourage scammers to contact you again.

16

4. Be aware of new pension scams New rules allowing people to access their pension pots from age 55 have brought with them new scams. Be cautious of anyone that claims to know about loopholes, talks about overseas investments or says you can get your money before age 55. 5. Report it Anyone can be taken in by a scam, so don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed if it happens to you. If you think you’ve been scammed, or you’ve spotted a scam contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 to report it and get help. If you would like more information on protecting yourself against fraud and scams, why not talk to us at Age UK Sutton? Not only can we give you information and advice on being scam savvy, but can also offer support if you or a family member have fallen victim to a fraudster. Fundraising For Bangalore

By Sam Cheeseright For those you who don’t know me, my name is Sam Cheeseright and I currently go to Esher College, although you may have seen me walking down the high street with the assurance that being an ex-Coombe Boy brings. However, in July, I will be temporarily leaving the safe haven of New Malden and embarking on a completely out-of-my-comfort-zone trip to Bangalore, India, with fellow pupils from Esher. While this may seem like I am simply telling you about an exciting holiday where a group of teenagers will cause mischief and mayhem, we will, in fact, be spending the majority of our hours renovating a rural primary school and ploughing their fields. We will also be teaching the young pupils basic Maths and English, while also hoping to learn a bit about their culture. In an entirely new way of life to me, the Coombe confidence that I mentioned will seem but a distant

memory. Despite this, I will go there with a certain degree of courage, as I have spent the last academic year fundraising for my passage to Bangalore. My target is £2300 and so far I have raised just over £1600 through a variety of activities such as babysitting, selling drinks at the Richmond Park run and the embarrassment of offering to pack shoppers’ bags at ASDA Roehampton, where I learned not to place eggs at the bottom of a bag the hard way. This trip is being organised by Concordia, a non-profit organisation who organise volunteering trips such as this to help the communities and farms they work with. Their ethos is to encourage different cultures to learn about one another. The biggest piece of fundraising I did was a quiz night on the 27th February at Christ Church Infants School, another former school of mine, which added the crucial element of reflection and nostalgia to the evening. I may not have been the most dashing of quizmasters but I would like to think that it was a fun Friday evening that raised over £300 for a good cause. Thank you very much to those who came to support it. Lastly, I’d like to thank anyone who has contributed to my fundraising, especially my sponsors: Jack Petchey Foundation, Rotary Club New Malden, Groves Residential, Shree Ganesh, Suttles and Eye Contact. I am really looking forward to this challenging but rewarding trip that will make a difference to the school children in Bangalore. There is still time to receive donations. If anyone would like to donate, I would be very grateful if you visited my myDonate page. Thank you. mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/samcheeseright.

View from the City

by Justin Urquhart Stewart

“Do not trust the horse, Trojans. Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts”. Virgil’s Aeneid, book 2, 19 BC: So we finally come to what looks like the end of the poker game, and so far no one has blinked. One side bets that surely the other won’t be so stupid and the other bets - well the same. If Greece defaults does this then become the next Lehman Brothers and all the tentacles of debt start to pull down the edifice of the Euro? Or has in fact most of the debt in reality been effectively written off by banks and other holders such that any such collateral damage (in this case quite literally collateral) will be minimised? Frankly there must come a stage when reality is faced with a single currency that if you are not going to play according to the rules then you will have to go. As it is the rules are pretty lax anyway with no real centrally controlled monetary or fiscal policy, so maybe this is the moment to get various parties to put up or shut up. The potential default would create a major shock for the now 16 year old monetary union, but I would be astonished if the authorities had not already been creating contingency plans should nothing be agreed. There seems to a distinct air of irritation at the methods of negotiation and frankly pretty confrontational behaviour, rhetoric and tactics. Whether the deliberate tweaking of the Eurozone leaders by visiting President Putin, or claiming progress with other leaders where frankly nothing was achieved, the result has been rising levels of annoyance. One of the key problems for the ECB is of course contagion, in that if they are seen to be giving into one weaker nation, what is to stop any other member state electing an extremist party and demanding a similar bail out, support or assistance? By playing hardball it would at least (pour encourager les autres) mean that others considering the Greek route would be frightened by the imminent pain of banks running out of money and the country hitting a dramatic funding crisis where there would be quite literally no notes in the cash machines. Just for the record here are some of the key facts. The Greek authorities are trying to find €2.4bn to pay pensions and civil servants’ salaries this month. Thereafter it is scheduled to repay €203 million to the

IMF by 1st May and a further €770 million on May 12th. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, a further €1.6 billion is due in June.

So what could the Greek government do? Well as I have mentioned before they could establish a parallel domestic currency (a Euro-lite or new Drachma) which would immediately devalue but at least provide a mechanism for day to day payments. However such an event needs careful planning and I doubt whether they have had the time to put such an alternative together. Potentially they could overprint the Euro notes with a Greek design in the short term but that would very likely be illegal as far as the ECB was concerned, but could be done. Either way it would mean a huge amount of financial and, I suspect, social disruption. So this time there is no gift, there is no Trojan horse, so we should beware of Greeks bearing no gifts. Election headlines and headlights One of the problems from the fixed term parliament and election is that companies, when concerned about what the election result might be, will have every excuse to delay taking decisions until the result is clearer (if it ever will be). I picked up in the North West just before Christmas that various building projects appeared to be stalled or put on hold as companies held back on investment plans until after the election. Now Deloittes’ 2015 CFO survey has shown that it is the election - ahead of deflation, emerging market issues and the Eurozone which troubles them the most. The survey covered 108 chief financial officers and showed that their risk appetite was weakening. Despite seeing a generally positive outlook, 63% of finance directors saw that the level of uncertainty was above normal - high - or very high! That was apparently the highest reading for two years, and were most concerned about post-election action being taken on regulation and taxation. To quote Deloittes: “on balance the expectation is that post-election changes will be negative for fiscal, monetary and labour market policies”. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor

New Malden Matters by John Knowls The New Malden (Beverley Ward) Residents’ Association has now been in existence for over five years. The main thrust of the Association is, as always, the thorny issue of planning, but we are here for other aspects of life in New Malden and we do hope that these are not all negative aspects, but positive ones as well. There is a national election in May. There is one thing about Kingston about which this Association can remark on without being party political and that is the high Council Tax charged in Kingston, the highest in London. We can remark on it in this context because the reason why it is so high is that the grant from Central Government to Kingston is so low, and because the system for the grant allocation was devised by the Conservatives in the 1990s, continued under Labour before 2010, and continued by the Conservatives since. The Council Tax on the average Band D property in Kingston in 2014-15 has been £1678, and for band F, a common band, £2424. The tax for both these bands is 2.5 times the tax in Westminster and Wandsworth, and 57 per cent higher than in the apparently rich Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The Kingston tax is higher than in the nearby boroughs of Merton, Sutton and Croydon, but only a little higher than in Richmond.

might be expected to charge more tax and vice versa. Those in a position to compare say, however, that services in Kingston are if anything less generous than in neighbouring Boroughs, despite a Band D property occupier in Kingston having to pay roughly £1000 more per year than one in Wandsworth, and a Band F one £1400 more. You might also want to ask candidates about planning policies of recent times. That is certainly party political, but all parties are faced with the same problem, and almost all the planning parameters are decided by Central Government, and imposed on the Boroughs, some through the Mayor of London. London is of course the place of fastest population growth in the country, and there are too few dwellings for the population, as seen from the very high house prices and rents, and the boom in construction. There are nevertheless questions which can be asked about planning. Is it sensible for so much of the growth in employment to be in Central London, when offices in this Borough are empty or being converted to flats? Should dwellings be provided without parking provision at all, at the expense of existing street parking? Are additional dwellings being provided without adequate provision of associated services, such as schools, water, sewerage and roads? Should new dwellings be located mostly where developers see profit, or concentrated where land is vacant or poorly used? You will probably have other questions on this subject. www.newmaldenresidents.org.uk or e-mail us at newmaldenresidents@gmail.com The Groves Residents’ Association can be contacted at: grovesassociation@btinternet.com

It might be expected that the Council tax for a given band would be basically the same in all when you quote vv03sx Boroughs, and that the Central Government grant would pay sufficient to keep services much the JD Hair Designs is situated on South Lane Parade same, so that if a particular Borough had a high just off the A3. Clubs Concealed on Coombe Road - a Brief History of the Hidden Golf Course “Don’t play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.” Harry Vardon Grand Opening Imagine the media frenzy if Tiger Woods, Rory Mcllroy, Phil Mickleson and Ricky Fowler came to play golf in New Malden. Well, on Saturday 1st May 1926 the equivalent happened: Abe Mitchell, Harry Vardon (famous for the Vardon grip), Alex Herd and Ted Ray, four of the greatest professionals of the time, played an exhibition match to mark the opening of Malden Golf Club on its move from Raynes Park (where the club had been founded in 1893). Royal Connections The land on which the course is built was leased from the FitzGeorge estate in 1926. In 1579, Thomas Vincent bought the land, known as Coombe Manor, from Queen Elizabeth I. (Some of the high walls forming the boundaries of his garden can still be seen near the top of Traps Lane on the left as you go up the hill). It has changed hands a number of times since. In 1753 the land was bought by John, later 1st Earl, Spencer (Princess Diana’s ancestor). In 1837, the 3rd Earl Spencer sold the land to Prince Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge and seventh son of George III. When he died in 1850, his son George, the 2nd Duke of Cambridge, inherited the estate and it was his younger son, Colonel Sir Augustus Fitzgeorge KCVO CB who became President of the new club. Much of the land on which the Malden Golf course lies had been the Hoppingwood Farm. The southern end of the farm was cut in two by the railway line in 1838 and, it is thought that, the tunnel under the railway alongside Beverley Brook was originally built so that cows could reach the other part of the farm which occupied what is now Beverley Park. Famous Golfers Some of the club’s more famous members include England cricketers Sir Jack Hobbs and Micky Stewart and fifteen time world snooker champion Joe Davis. Famous golfers to play the course include Gary Player and Bing Crosby.   What lies behind? So, if you ever wondered what lies behind the large building at the junction of Coombe Road and Traps

28

Lane, now you know: over one hundred acres of green and pleasant land, home to a large number of species of birds, a few foxes and any number of golfers escaping the hustle and bustle of suburban life.

Would P.G. Wodehouse recognise any of today’s occupants of the club house? No. While the club acknowledges its history and traditions, the days of retired colonels dressed in tweeds and plus fours and stuffy etiquette are long gone (although the days of dodgy golf trousers are not). You will find, on the course and in the bar, pretty much the same mix of people you would find in the rest of New Malden. (The club prides itself on being part of the community having raised a total of more than £200,000 in its Charity Golf Day which has for years formed part of Malden Fortnight). So, if you fancy some peace and tranquility, a round of golf on a piece of New Malden history then do drop in, you’ll be sure of warm and friendly welcome. The history of the club has been sourced from the wonderfully detailed The History of Malden Golf Club written by JN (Robin Gems) and published by the club in 1990.

People Betty Szarowicz of New Malden plays a merry tune on her 100th Birthday by Yee-Liu Williams

Betty Szarowicz took to the stage and played many a merry tune for her 100th Birthday celebration on Sunday, 19 April at The Station pub in Stoneleigh, Surrey.

“I love living in New Malden - I love the people and I have so many friends here. I used to play piano for the adult education classes at the New Malden Centre.”

“Yes I’ve got to a 100 all on my own,” said Szarowicz. The feistiest, youngest, 100 year-old you could ever meet. “I don’t feel any different from being 100 than from being 40,” she said.

Originally from London’s Russell Square, Szarowicz has worked in all manner of jobs and even worked in air raid patrol during the War. “I would have been a suffragette if I had lived at that time,” she tells me.

Great grandmother Szarowicz proudly tells me she has six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two sons Joseph and Michael. Married to her Polish sweetheart architect husband for over 30 years she lived in Stoneleigh before she moved to New Malden after her husband died in 1983.

But it is music that is so important in Betty’s life as she took to the stage and played a few of her favourite old-time musical numbers - ‘Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner’ that got the party really going with a real swing.

It’s “in the blood” as her father was a pianist and songwriter and her mother was a wardrobe mistress in the theatre, working with many famous actors. And Betty knows many a musician today. With a special visit and performance by acclaimed international violinist, Tomo Keller, a lead musician with Academy of St Martin’s in the Field, he played Godowski Heifetz, “Alt Wien” and Elgar’s Salut d’Amour - a highlight of the afternoon that held Betty and the party in absolute raptures.

and Key Cutting

“Betty’s wonderful, she’s a terrific lady - she just has the ability and gift to make so many friends,” said Keller. Long-term friends, Geoff and Yvonne Chapman from Melbourne Australia, “It’s amazing how she keeps in touch through email and Skype. She’s one of those true ‘silver surfers’ even at a 100 she’s so with it.” So what’s your secret? “It’s about living and living life as best you can. It’s a fact that we all have a place in the world - even if you don’t do it right - you have done the best you could!” Szarowicz said with a mischievous grin.

to the sport, so don’t be shy about coming along and trying your hand. All you need to bring with you is an open mind, a good sense of humour, comfortable clothes and flat-soled shoes/trainers – we will provide you with the bowls, friendly advice, coaching and refreshments. After you have learned the basics you can then pick it up as you go along, gradually improving your technique and skill level at your own pace. Once you start playing you can buy a pair of bowling shoes for around £30 - £40 and should be able to pick up a decent set of 4 second-hand bowls for around £40. Unlike other sports our members can practice at our club most times during daylight hours 7 days a week, either on your own or with other club members. The main proviso to this is that the club’s home matches and competitions take priority over practice sessions. Most bowls clubs have an active social side – Supreme hold quiz nights, BBQ’s, day trips to the races and similar activities. Our outdoor bowls season runs from the end of April to the end of September with many members then playing indoor bowls throughout the remainder of the year.

Recipe Herby stuffed baked tomatoes

Serves: 2-4 Ready in: 1 hour

Large and juicy beefsteak tomatoes are the perfect shape and size for stuffing and make an economical midweek supper. Serve hot or cold with a crisp green salad drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze. 4 firm beefsteak tomatoes 3 tbsp Virgin olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 75g fresh white breadcrumbs 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley 1 tbsp fresh chopped mint 2 tsp capers, drained and rinsed Salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Use a sharp knife to slice the tops off the tomatoes and slice a thin sliver from the base of each tomato to prevent them wobbling in the dish. “The Ultimate Class for Mums and Babies” The Times

Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh from each tomato. Finely chop and reserve the flesh but discard the seeds. Place the tomato shells in a shallow ovenproof dish. Heat half the olive oil in a medium-sized frying pan. Add the chopped onion and fry over a mediumhigh heat for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and fry for a further 4-5 minutes until tender and golden. Stir in the chopped tomato flesh, breadcrumbs, parsley, mint and capers and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into the tomato shells, pressing it down gently then top with the lids. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tomatoes are just tender. Serve hot or cold. TIP Replace the breadcrumbs with cous cous if liked. Place 115g cous cous in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. Stir once then place a plate on top of the bowl and leave for 10 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff up the grains with a fork then stir into the fried onion mixture as above. Add some toasted pine nuts, chopped dried apricots, fresh chopped coriander a little harissa paste for a more exotic flavour.

Events A warm welcome from Christ Church Primary School to come and enjoy the A-MAY-ZING fun of the fair and Dog Show Each spring and summer, New Malden is buzzing with excitement ahead of the many fairs and fun days that are organised (usually by enthusiastic PTAs and busy brigades of volunteers!) on behalf of all of our fantastic primary schools in the area. Whilst these are largely supported by parents and pupils, staff and supporters of each individual school, invites are always extended to neighbouring residents and members of the local community who might like to pop in to sample the delicious coffee and cakes that are invariably on offer, as well as “taking a chance” on the many side-stalls, raffles and other attractions. What’s not to love!? However, this year, the team behind the annual extravaganza at Christ Church Primary School are really hoping to see lots of new faces joining in the fun as the annual Spring Fair (enticingly rebranded for 2015, the A-MAY-ZING Fair!) will be introducing a few new elements on Saturday May 16th…. Instead of the usual ribbon cutting and photo-opportunity at 12 noon, the fundraising festivities will ‘kick off’ this year with a big community Dog Show, to be held on the front lawn of Christ Church (just a stone’s throw away from the school’s infant site on Lime Grove, where the ‘main event’ will take part later in the day!) Open to everyone from in and around New Malden, this “Crufts in the Community” promises to be great fun (for owners and their four legged friends alike). The event is very generously being sponsored by local, independent pet store, “Woofs-ADaisy”, who will also be providing the expert judges! And, the show will be compered by Christ Church’s very own, Rev Stephen Kuhrt, who has kindly “given his blessing” to the church grounds being used for this really inclusive and entertaining event! We have 8 categories - £1 to enter each. Waggiest Tail Best Dressed Best Party Trick Cutest couple Strictly Come Canine Most beautiful Girl Most beautiful Boy Dog with the biggest smile

Pre-registration is already open - just go to our webpage to download a form - otherwise owners can register from 11.30am on the morning of the 16th. ccnmdogshow.weebly.com/ During the day, you might also notice teams of Christ Church children and parents pounding the High Street armed with clipboards as they look for cryptic clues as part of the Great Scavenger Hunt – which will take entrants up to the Fountain Roundabout and back and in and out of some of our favourite shops and local businesses (a big thanks to all those who’ve agreed to be involved!) And then, it’s “back to base” at 3pm for the start of Christ Church Primary’s new look Spring-Fest! Along with all the usual favourites (games, huge inflatables, BBQ, Pimms tent, “The Jubilee Tea Room”, Korean Food Hall, raffle etc) there will also be live music from a range of local musicians performing on the “main stage” (OK, it’s not quite gonna be Glastonbury, with a 7pm finish!) and also an opportunity to take part in a mass Line Dancing lesson! Yee Hah! So, we really do hope to see as many of you as possible on Saturday May 16th – our doors are open to everyone who’d like to come and join in the fun!

Nature Local breaking news by Sarah Harris

Swifts return from their epic journey…only to find all hotel accommodation ‘blocked up’. Have you heard the screaming of late, high up in the spring sky of New Malden? The scream is in fact the swift or ‘Apus apus’ saying hello to its neighbours after its long journey from South Africa to Great Britain. They are one of the last summer arrivals, appearing first in May and leaving in August. They delay their arrival to ensure that there is an ample supply of aerial insects for them to feed their young. But of late swifts have been struggling a bit and their numbers have drastically reduced. The reason is that the nesting holes in our roof spaces are being blocked up, as a consequence quite often, of our own families expanding and needing more room! Having a loft conversion is great for us but terrible for the swift. Also, new houses tend to be constructed with closed eaves, blocking out the swift entirely. I have been honoured to have swifts nest in my house in the Groves area for the past twelve years. I eagerly await their arrival every spring, and to watch them performing their aerial acrobatics over the roof tops as they search for a nesting sight always brings a smile to my face. With long scimitar shaped wings which measure 50cm across from tip to tip and a small body of only 16.5 cm they are designed as the perfect endurance flying machine. They are a plain sooty brown and the tail is short and forked. Young birds looking for a nest site will fly past potential sites brushing or ‘banging’ the entrance with their wings. Resident birds respond by coming to the entrance and screaming. This continues throughout the breeding season. I love coming out of my front door and seeing them swoop up or launch themselves out of their nests.

straw and other material gathered on the wing and cemented together with saliva. The female swift lays two to three eggs and both parents incubate them for 19 days. Young remain in the nest for 37 – 56 days depending on the weather and are independent as soon as they leave the nest. Once a young swift leaves the nest it will fly non-stop for the next 18 months or more! Swifts spend more time in flight than any other species, even sleeping on the wing but remaining alert to where they are. In fact, the only reason they leave their aerial world at all is to raise young. Swifts pair for life, meeting up each spring at the same nest site. Pair bonds are often formed when the birds are only one year old but they will be unlikely to breed successfully until they are 4 years old. So, this month, stop, stand still and look up. You might just be lucky enough to see these fascinating birds.

My family had a loft conversion a few years ago and we simply boxed out the small area of loft that they use to nest in. They only need a foot or so of space. I also took the opportunity to install 2 externally mounted swift nest boxes as they like to nest in colonies. Their nests are quite rudimentary, bits of To advertise email jenny@nmvv.co.uk or call 020 8336 2915

Gardening Going potty for summer plants By Pippa Greenwood

I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of course gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in. But there are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end. Buckets too can look really good fun and if you have one which still has its handle firmly attached, then you could use it as a hanging basket. Old footwear with can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well. But if you are going to recycle a pair of wellies, then you may need to punch a few holes. Again cascading plants can look particularly dramatic, but a bunch of bright red geraniums or the spiky hedgehog-like foliage of a bright green or variegated grass can look particularly eye-catching. See if there’s anything in your kitchen cupboards that could be recycled. An old saucepan, casserole pot or even a mixing bowl or jug can make an 58

attractive planter. If the container is large and there are no drainage holes in it, then the other option is to plant it up as a mini bog garden and use moisture-loving plants in it such as hostas or pondside irises. Colanders or sieves also make interesting and unusual hanging baskets. You can simply plant one or two upright specimens in the centre of the colander and then use plenty of trailing plants around the edge and allow them to cascade down. You could even create your own living tea set with

an old sizeable teapot and some large mugs full of favourite summer bedding. Larger items such as old wheelbarrows or chimney pots can often be bought very cheaply from a local salvage or junk yard. Something like a wheelbarrow gives a huge planting area and because it holds such a large volume of compost, it will also mean it will be less inclined to dry out. All these containers can be treated in just the same way as a container that you have bought from the garden centre. As I mentioned drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants themselves, you need nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun! A Malden Man by Raj Randhawa As I write this on a Saturday morning, I’m not sitting at home playing with my children. Instead I find myself sitting in the grounds of my dad’s house in a village called Dhanowali in Punjab (India). It’s a house he had built a few years ago in his ancestral village. The house is beautiful but no more impressive than other houses in the village, but if I could transplant this house to New Malden it would sit in the Coombe area amongst other equally salubrious properties. It’s over thirty degrees and as I sit beneath the shade of an orange tree, I watch the wind tease the uppermost branches of a majestic tree that towers overhead, pulling them this way and that. A squadron of parakeets perform a noisy flyby while a solitary black crow cacaws its way over the house. The many village sounds vy for my attention- a tractor’s low rumble; chattering birds; children playing in the narrow gullys; the village equivalent of an ice cream van- the local fruit and veg seller shouts out his wares on his daily rounds. It’s a far cry from the sounds of my New Malden mornings, with BBC Radio 6 playing in the background; the children’s stomping and chomping; my wife reeling off my plans for the day. Later we take an auto-rickshaw past yellow school buses like you see in American films, shuttling smartly dressed children in their school uniforms, not unlike you’ll see in New Malden. Then there’s the other children, the ones that instead of having their hair slicked back and packed off to school in their shiny shoes, these are the children without a childhood, born into a uniform of dirty rags, collecting plastic bags or bottles in the streets or working adult jobs like sitting on piles of stone hammering rocks into submission. And I think about my own children back home, who have everything they could wish for including 60

the luxury of living out their childhood as children, with all that it brings. Later as I’m driven to my aunt’s house in the town of Jalandhar, we pass huge gated mansions of brilliant white next to communities of corrugated shacks in all manor of dirty grey. Beggar children approach the car windows with expectant palms open. I arrive at my aunt’s (what can only be described as) mansion, where I now sit in the manicured garden- as big as two tennis courts joined in an L. I think of New Malden where the gap between rich and poor exists but is far less staggering than here. India is a magical country, but to live here one must have wealth on his side. As a British Indian, I have a close affinity to India and I’m having a wonderful time, but when the sun sets and sleep takes me, I dream of New Malden and of seeing my children again.
