Editor’s letter Dear All, Well, my sun-dance has worked!! (and just in time for the start of the school summer holidays!) Last month, I wrote about how the sun was shining and we were looking forward to a glorious Malden Fortnight - little did I know that just around the corner, the wettest July on record was looming…! That said, the British weather didn’t dampen our spirits and we all cheered our way through Murray’s centre court battle with Federer (with the roof on, as course!) on the ‘big screen’ at Beverley Park, whilst we dodged the showers during the races, tugo-war and “welly throwing” competitions at ‘Funday Sunday’. And, of course, the weather didn’t stop New Malden’s prettiest pooches, who came out in force for the annual Dog Show !
The rain even held off for the all-important Parade, with its topical Olympic theme, so overall, everyone agreed Malden Fortnight was a great success and, as a member of the organising committee, a big thank you to all local residents who got involved and came along to support our packed programme of events! August is often a quieter month in New Malden, with many families (particularly those with school age children) disappearing for a well-earned break or “stay-cation”. Malden Fortnight 2012 The sun shone as it has the last few years, thank goodness, on Malden Fornight Parade Day and also on the last day for the Tennis Club Open Day and the increasingly popular Dog Show. Despite some heavy rain during the Craft Fair and Funday Sunday both events were deemed great

£50,000 award to Malden Wanderers Malden Wanderers, whose Clubhouse is in Cambridge Avenue, New Malden, has secured Olympic Legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund. The Inspired Facilities fund is part of “Places People Play”, Sport England’s Olympic and Paralympic legacy fund, which aims to bring the inspiration of the London 2012 Games to every community in England. By receiving Inspired Facilities funding, we will now have the Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the London Games, Better known as a cricket club, Malden Wanderers want to refurbish their tennis court to continue to provide excellent facilities for both Club members and the local community. The award of £50,000 will cover most of the cost of resurfacing the court, replacing the perimeter netting and installing floodlights - which will enable the court to be used for netball as well as tennis - and greatly extend the use of the Club by local people. Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This National Lotttery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for Greater London. This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in South East England, and it shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.” Malden Wanderers’ President, long-standing member and cricketer, Michael Jacobs, said: “Obtaining this award is fantastic news. We greatly value the ability to offer tennis as well as cricket, and we’re looking forward to having a newly refurbished court of which we can all make good use.” Alec Stewart, O.B.E., former England Captain and the most famous cricketer to emerge from Malden Wanderers, said: “I could not be more pleased that Malden Wanderers have been given this award. I was a junior tennis member at the Club while also learning and playing my cricket there, and have continued my interest in tennis. This represents a great investment in the future of our tennis tradition.” Malden Wanderers is one of hundreds of projects across England benefitting from lottery investment through the second round of the Inspired Facilities fund. And Sport England today launched a further £10 million

LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe, said: “This is a fantastic funding project that will deliver a real legacy from the London 2012 Games. A bridge too far by Robin Gill Anne Maria Robinson aged 19 was the daughter of a laundress in Tooting; her father had died in 1866. When she was reaching the full term of a pregnancy at the beginning of 1869, she was sent to stay with the Collett family in New Malden. In Victorian times this was known as confinement, and Martha Collett who lived at 6 Market Place (close to the Methodist Church), seems to have been well versed in looking after young ladies who were in the last few days before giving birth. The birth of a female child on 4th February was duly registered at Kingston, but when the baby was two weeks old the mother (Anne Maria) decided she wished to return to her mother permanently, taking the baby with her to be placed with a wet nurse in Wimbledon. Anne Maria was seen later that Wednesday evening at Malden station by Mr (Thomas) Collett a shoemaker, who had followed her soon after. She left the train at Wimbledon station telling him that she was taking the baby to someone she knew there. He carried on to Tooting to call on her mother. That following morning (18th February) at about ten to
seven, James Drewitt who lived in Herbert Road South Wimbledon was walking alongside the mill pond by the river Wandle about 1¼ miles from the station , when he thought he saw a piece of cloth in the water, and retrieved it with a rake. He found it was a child’s body, and took it to a nearby pub where Police Superintendent Butt was informed. The police made inquiries in the local area particularly among old women (like Mrs Collett) who “attended at confinements”. It did not take long for Anne Maria to be contacted, and on Saturday evening (20th) she identified the child as her own, and was afterwards taken into Merton police station. Under arrest She was taken into custody on a charge of drowning her illegitimate child in the River Wandle. Her defence was that she had decided to walk from Wimbledon station to Tooting, about 2¼ miles. She had taken a path which was rarely used and very marshy (locally called “going through the quick”). Feeling faint, she rested on the railings across a bridge over the river near to a flour mill, she lost hold of her umbrella in the wind, and on bending down to retrieve it, collapsed and lost hold of the baby, which fell into the water. She became frightened and confused over the incident; “she did not know whether she stood on her head or on her heels “and did not mention it to anyone, let alone the police, other than her mother (Maria) on reaching home at 9pm. Her mother confirmed her daughter’s story, and said that she had looked in the newspapers the next morning to see if a baby had been found. According to the police, Anne Maria had already had a child by a “respectable young man”, and it was suspected he was also the father of the baby girl. The majority of jurors at the inquest before William Carter the coroner for East Surrey found her guilty of “wilful murder” but the proceedings had to be adjourned by request of her mother so she could organise a defence lawyer, and Anne Maria had to be held in custody at the infirmary attached to the workhouse, to be brought back before the local bench at a later date. The inquest was resumed on 26th February at the Horse and Groom in Haydons Road. Charlotte Hicks also a laundress, who lived next door to the Robinsons, stated that she had inquired about the baby on the Wednesday, to be told by Anne Maria that it was dead as it had been born prematurely. The following day, Hicks told Anne Maria that she had heard her baby was still alive, and was told by Robinson that was correct, and she was with a wet nurse in Wimbledon. The jury found Anne Maria guilty of wilful murder and sent her for trial at Wandsworth Police Court. Her next appearance was on 9th March before James (later

Sir James) Ingham at Wandsworth. A letter dated 18th February (Thursday) was read .This had been sent by Anne Maria to Mrs Collett at New Malden, and was attached to a large woollen shawl which Mrs Collett had lent Anne Maria in which to wrap the baby when she left on the Wednesday night. The letter stated she had arrived home safe, and her mother would be calling on her to settle the account for her services. Although Mrs Collett did not charge, there were the doctor’s fees to pay. There was no mention of the child in the letter. Mr Smith the medical officer of the workhouse said that when Anne Maria was brought into the institution on 21st February, she was exhausted, and he confirmed that if she was in the same state after walking from Wimbledon station carrying a child and umbrella it may have caused her to faint. Nevertheless Mr Ingham committed her for trial at Kingston Assizes for murder. The trial at Kingston The day of the trial at Kingston before Baron Bramwell duly arrived on 24th March, and when Anne Maria appeared in the dock she appeared to many observers to look much younger than her age (19). She soon started to scream and cry, “What are they going to do with me, Oh, mother what are they going to do”. This brought on a fainting fit from her mother, who had to be removed from the court. After order had been restored, Drewett was first to be cross-examined, and said that the bridge was not broken, but there was only a single rail on both sides. The water was about five foot deep, and there was no bank nearby. Martha Collett was then called, and related that Robinson had lodged at her house for six weeks in total. When she saw that she was getting ready to leave on 17th , she asked her not to go on such a night (raining and foggy), but instead to go to church with her and she would take her home in the morning. Anne Maria told her that her mother wanted her home, and headed off towards Malden railway station. She left on a train at 6.45pm and the journey to Wimbledon took about six minutes. She (Martha) visited the Robinson’s house on 19th February after hearing about the discovery of a baby’s body, and demanded to see the young child. She was told it was not there, and both Anne Maria and her mother accompanied Mrs Collett to the police station after she told them about the body in the river. Mrs Collett stated that Anne Maria had always treated the baby kindly, as she had with her first child, although she had never seen her kiss the baby. Richard Drewitt who lived close to the bridge was called. He said he was at home suffering from gout, and did not go to bed until 10pm. He had a light burning which could be seen from the bridge, but nobody called on him. The defence council Douglas Straight, (later Sir Douglas) made a good case as to how the evidence accurately reflected Anne Maria testimony, and the loss of the child was a terrible accident. The shawl had been retained because Anne Maria made a grab for the baby when she fell, but the child fell out of the cover and she was left just

holding the shawl. The bridge was known as a dangerous place, and the river was swollen by the heavy rain. The local surgeon confirmed what the workhouse doctor had stated that such a young girl who had recently given birth would likely feel faint after walking that distance. After about half an hour’s deliberation, the jury took a merciful view and acquitted the girl, and Anne Maria left the court with her mother. Later lives Readers may be interested to know what happened to the major persons involved in this article. Martha Collett the midwife died within the next 12 months, she was 60 years old. Maria Robinson the mother of Anne Maria died in 1877 aged 65. James Ingham the magistrate at Wandsworth police court became the chief magistrate throughout London in 1876 the same year he was knighted; he died in 1890 age 83. Thomas Collett shoemaker and husband of Martha carried on living in New Malden, firstly in the Market Place, then Sycamore Grove, ending his days in Northcote Road. He died in 1891 aged 83, and is buried in Kingston Cemetery. William Carter the coroner, became the chief coroner for Surrey and did not retired until he was 81, he died in 1892 aged 85. Baron Bramwell the judge at Kingston Assizes became a privy councillor in 1876 and a baron in 1882. He died in 1892 aged 83.

As for Anne Maria, she married the following year (1870) David Skelton a labourer from Beddington. They had at least seven children, the eldest of which, Henry became a jockey riding in Great Britain, and Russia. He was known as the “Sparrow King Of Sutton” on account of his small stature. His daughter who carried on the laundry work from her mother, and grandmother, was the only person allowed to iron Harry Secombe’s shirts in the local laundry in Sutton. (My thanks to Des Adams for providing the information on the Skeltons). Anne Maria died in 1909 aged 59. Finally, Douglas Straight the young barrister who acted on behalf of Anne Maria at the Assizes, and was instrumental in her acquittal. He was elected an MP the following year, and later became a judge in India for thirteen years. On his return to England he was knighted, and became editor of the Pall Mall Gazette for thirteen years. Summer recipe tips Home-Made Burgers It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made char-grilled burgers. Follow these top tips for the best burgers around… Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince. • Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like.You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. • A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked. • Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes. • If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw. • Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Was your child at Learning Land? 10 years ago, the unused and unloved sports pavilion in Beverley Park was suddenly again filled with the sound of children laughing (as well as babies crying!!) as a new pre-school nursery for New Malden (then known as ‘Learning Land’) was opened. Filling a much needed gap for additional nursery care for the growing number of working mums and dads in the area, Learning Land – founded by Estelle James, who still manages the business today – provided a safe, fun and homely environment for around 18 children aged from 3 months up until school age. So now, a decade later, many of the first babies to ever attend the “nursery in the Park” as it is fondly known, are now growing up fast and preparing to leave primary school! And to mark this milestone, local mum, Helena Rebello

But knowing our children were in such safe hands and having such fun made it all the more bearable and we all want to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the nursery by holding an extra-special picnic in September.” Any former parents, children or staff from Learning Land (now called First Insight to Learning) Day Nursery, are invited to attend the picnic (to be held on the grass outside the nursery). Even The Samba Slows... It appears that someone is slowing the Samba in Sao Paulo. The exciting tempo that was the growth of the world’s second largest developing economy has been showing some serious signs of faltering. The golden period of President Lula was always going to be hard to sustain, and it has been unfortunate for the new President, Dilma Rousseff, that she was inevitably going to see a more difficult economic climate. The Brazilian consumer has been one of the primary drivers of the economy over the past few years; however now it seems that the consumer led drive is faltering. Last week retail figures were expected to rise from April by some 0.6%; in fact they dropped by 0.8% which was the largest fall since November 2008. No doubt these were amongst the reasons that Copom (the central bank monetary policy committee) decided to cut rates by 0.5% to 8% (it was the eighth consecutive
cut since last August, when the Selic rate stood at 12.5%). They seem to be less concerned about inflationary pressures and are trying to inspire some recovery to boost the economy which has grown by a mere 0.2% on a quarterly basis since the middle of last year. Although car sales were up a little, primarily due to a tax change, construction plunged 11.3% over the month. With exports slowing and even some manufacturing returning to home territories, the authorities are seriously concerned about the sustainability of future growth levels. In stark contrast though, earlier last week the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released its composite leading indicators and reported on the Brazilian economy. Interestingly, it came out telling a very different story. In fact the OECD indicator for the economy -- South America’s largest, is signalling a turnaround in growth, and is one of the few country or regional indicators to do so. Almost every other country and region signalled economic activity below long-term trend or significantly moderating. While Japan, the U.S. and Russia all showed continued improvement in activity, the overall trend in the last quarter suggests a moderation in growth. The biggest surprise in the data was the significant slowdown in Indian and Chinese activity, a worrying sign for emerging markets dependent on commodity exports. measure is an index of 200 economic series that usually correspond to changes in the business cycle. However, when faced with an uncertain global economy, the government seems to be turning to a series of heavy-handed policies influenced by populist sentiment and industrial cronyism. This is often seen with policies which seem almost protectionist in their attitudes. Squeezed by a strong national currency, Brazilian manufacturers have found themselves becoming increasingly
uncompetitive against foreign rivals and are considered one of the main drags on the economy. Seemingly the cost of being in Brazil has put off overseas manufacturers and we have even seen examples of some moving out. Spare room search YMCA London South West is launching the Young People’s Supported Lodgings scheme in the Royal Borough of Kingston and are looking for some ‘amazing people’ in the local Borough who are able to rent out their spare room to a young person. The scheme matches hosts with young people aged 16 to 25, who have low support needs but maybe lack the confidence and skills needed to live independently. Currently many of these young people are referred to hostels such as YMCA Surbiton who provide supported housing to those who find themselves homeless. Zoe Sargent, the Supported Lodging’s Co-ordinator, said “It’s surprising just how many young people need this sort of housing in the Borough. Many are at College or just starting working life and though we can accommodate them at YMCA Surbiton, their
low support needs are much better suited to a homely environment. So, we’re looking for some really amazing people who’d be willing to rent their room to someone who would really benefit from it and need to take this final step before living independently”. The length of placement is flexible depending on the needs of the host and the young person and tend to range from a few months up to two years. Hosts will receive £95 per week paid by BACS transfer and a further £5 per week from the young person. Training and support is provided throughout the whole process, with the appropriateness and length of placements reviewed every three months. Locally, families with young children have a fantastic resource at the New Malden Children’s Centre and among the many wonderful play sessions, messy play, baby massage etc there is also a breastfeeding support group which runs on the 1st Friday of every month. The monthly meetings are run by an accredited La Leche League Leader and is for any pregnant or breastfeeding mum. You don’t even need to have a problem, it’s a great way to meet other breastfeeding mums and to get support and information about any aspect of breastfeeding. You may be experiencing the early day
challenges of worrying about out how much milk is enough, a colicy baby, tongue tie difficulties or maybe you have a baby that will only feed to sleep (very normal!). You may be pregnant and worried about how you’re going to breastfeed a newborn and look after your toddler or how to breastfeed twins! You might have questions about starting solid food or may be looking to the future and finding out your options when you return to work. Just knowing that there are other mums who have been through it all and can offer ideas that worked for them, as well as a range of books and leaflets for mums to browse or borrow and having a sympathetic group to chat to has helped many mums feel more confident in finding a way that suits them and their family. The newly-formed “Maldens and Coombe Heritage Group” is set on collating local history that does not appear in any history book and which solely remains in the memories of the people who lived here. The memories can be as simple as a one-line memory of a street, a building, shopkeeper, a school teacher, the way things were, anything you wish to share! It can be a paragraph recalling some aspect of the village, a special day perhaps, fields of corn, the pottery, the Kingston bypass, absolutely anything. Local history is, what it says, ‘local’ and your memories are OUR history and without your help present and future generations will have no reference, no source and the history will be lost forever. Your memories, photos, etc. (if you are willing to share them) are like pages of a history book that have been separated and have blown, by the wind of change and ravages of time, to all the different streets in the area!! We are intent on collecting up all these loose pages such that the local history is pieced together. In time, the aim would be to make the recollections available to all – perhaps in a loose leaf news letter or as a separate article in Village Voice, etc. In all instances and circumstances privacy will be maintained! No addresses will be published and only first names would accompany the memory so as to add a personal touch. Photos, etc. would simply be copied – not kept - and you would therefore retain the originals. Funday Sunday
Below is a short description of the day from one of our young athletes! On Sunday 8th July we were looking forward to going to the Funday Sunday in Beverley Park, but when we woke up it was a horrid day, really rainy. We waited to see and just after 12 , the sun came out! We went to the park and so did lots of people. It was great fun. We entered lots of races and had a go at welly throwing . I had a burger from the BBQ and my mum had a curry and a glass of pimms! It was really sunny in the afternoon and Andy Murray was playing in the Wimbledon final which was showing on a big screen. We had a great time at Funday and will definitely go again next year!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Funday Sunday as part of Malden Fortnight. Despite an awful start to the day weather wise, it ended very well and we were so blessed that New Malden is such a wonderful, supportive community who turned out despite the rainclouds. A huge thank you to you all, to all those who worked so hard on the day and before to make it a success and to the very many generous companies and individuals who donated goods enabling us to raise an amazing £3868! This will provide thousands of meals and much needed education and care for the orphans we take care of in the Kibera Slum, Nairobi. Thankyou!

Inventions - Elevators “Welcome to Canary Wharf - the office you require is on the 18th floor.” Or “Welcome to the Eiffel Tower. There are wonderful views of the city from the Observation Level.” A world without elevators is unthinkable. Elevators may be considered modern inventions however they are first referenced by Roman architect Vitruvius who reported that Archimedes (c287BCc212BC) constructed one in about 236BC. One of the most famous ancient lifts, a cab on hemp rope elevated manually, is at the Sinai monastery in Egypt and the ’Book of Secrets’ by Ibn Khalaf al-Muradi in Islamic Spain described the use of an elevator-like lifting mechanism for heavy equipment. Early elevators used manual hoists or winders but by 1793 the first screw-
driven elevator was installed in the Russian Winter Palace, built by Ivan Kulibin. By the mid-1800s, hundreds of goods lifts were in use. Operated by increasing water pressure inside a cylinder, a steel column below the cab caused it to rise, aided by a counterweight. As buildings grew taller, however, this proved impractical, as it required a pit as deep as the building was tall. In 1852, Elisha Otis introduced his revolutionary safety braking system, which prevented the fall of the cab if the cable snapped. In 1854 he demonstrated his invention in a death-defying demonstration in the Crystal Palace and in March 1857, the first Otis passenger elevator was installed at 488 Broadway in New York City. Strangely enough, the first elevator shaft preceded the first working elevator by four years. Today elevators are everywhere and special adaptations are Dumb Waiters, exterior glass elevators on buildings and the Paternoster in busy commercial premises. Thank you Mr Otis. © Leon F. Jones

Your Plants Don’t Want a ‘Holiday’ by Pippa Greenwood
If you’re going on holiday shortly, don’t forget that your garden and plants will appreciate some TLC before you leave. Time spent sorting out your plants will help keep them going and make your house look less abandoned in your absence whilst you’re away. Make sure you take care of your lawn. Give it a thorough mowing, cutting it short but without ‘scalping’ it. Take a pair of lawn edging shears, a half-moon edger or simply a sharp spade and neaten all the edges, including those next to flower beds. Edging lasts far longer than mowing, it will stop the lawn moving into the flower beds and make the grass appear more recently maintained. Make sure that all plants, especially those in containers and those forming fruit are fed well. Liquid feeds have the speediest response but controlled release fertiliser granules will last for longer. If you use a dry or granular feed, make sure that you water it well unless rain is expected. Persuade a friend or neighbour to pop in and do some watering and suggest they pick the sweet-peas and harvest some veg so you’ll both benefit. A good, thorough watering of the garden will mean that plants in open ground should be unharmed by hot weather for a good while. Plants in pots and tubs are totally reliant on you if there isn’t much rain, so make these your priority. Many plants cease flowering if faded flowers are left and allowed to start to form seeds, so remove every faded bloom before you leave. I suggest ‘dead heading’ not only the faded flowers, but also those just starting to fade. A sharp pair of scissors or just your finger and thumb should do the trick. Hanging baskets are invariably in the hottest, sunniest parts of the garden and with their roots in the air they are especially prone to drought. Unless they will be regularly watered, it’s best to carefully lower hanging baskets and stand each one on its own pot in a shady spot where it will dry out less quickly. Planters and patio pots lose moisture very readily especially if the weather is hot or windy. By carefully grouping the pots together in one place you’ll create shade around the roots of the pots, reducing the risk of drought and heat damage. Try to position more drought tolerant patio plants towards the outer edge of the group, and drought prone plants towards the cooler

centre. Make sure that your garden sheds and other storage areas are properly secured however it’s worth giving the padlock keys to a neighbour, just in case they need anything. Ladders, mattocks, spades and other items that could be used to break into your house (or the shed) should be removed or locked away out of sight so that they don’t encourage burglary. Finally check that any new outbreaks of pests or diseases are treated or dealt with before you go. Leave a handful of whitefly in your greenhouse, or a few greenfly on your roses, and there may well be a fullscale disaster zone when you return! We are the champions! 8,000 players representing 1,000 schools took part in the Under 11 Premier League’s schools tournament. Boys from Corpus Christi Catholic School representing Fulham qualified unbeaten through area competitions to reach the finals which took place earlier this month at the ‘Emirates’. At 6.40 in the morning the team assembled to make their journey to the famous stadium where they were drawn to play Everton, Norwich, Man City and Sunderland at the group stage. Without conceding a goal the Corpus Christi team, captained by Kit Elliot, flew through to the semi-finals where they battled against Blackburn - the result was a 1-0 victory. The final, against the only other unbeaten team , Tottenham Hotspur saw the teams coaches, Tony Mesourouni and Adam Wicks cheer their
boys on in a match that lasted 10 minutes but seemed like 50! The tense game which saw skilful passing using the full width of the pitch saw our boys score 2 fantastic goals and they went on to lift the trophy presented by Richard Scudamore, Chief Executive of the Premier League and Dion Dublin, ex-footballer. The boys returned exhausted to school after a 12 hour day holding the cup and grinning letting us all know it was the best day of their lives.

Crop Circle Season It’s August, and although the crop circle season is nearing its end, now is the best time to go out and see what delights the Andy Goldsworthys of the skies have left us to marvel at this year. Actually, crop circles “appear” around the world throughout spring, summer, and autumn – whenever and wherever there’s a standing crop. But with a fair chance of decent weather and the kids on holiday and needing some diversion, August may be the right month to go and see one, perhaps as part of a day out in the country which might include a pub lunch and a couple of hours in a traffic jam on the A303 (because an awful lot of crop circles “appear” in the Stonehenge area). I say “appear” in quotation marks because of course the contentiousness about them is how they’re made, or more especially who or what they’re made by: freak
weather, outer space visitors or human pranksters. Crop circles have been reported sporadically since the 17th century, and the first investigation of their cause, in Surrey in 1880, put them down to “cyclonic wind action”, extraterrestrials having not yet been thought of. From the 1970s, though, they were reported more and more often, attracting more media attention and more theories about their origin. I needn’t go into detail, but by 1991 there was a large body of opinion that they were the work of UFOs or their occupants. Unfortunately for the UFO theorists, in that year a couple of blokes called Doug Brewer and Dave Chorley claimed to have made most if not all of them using nothing more sophisticated than a plank and a length of rope, and were more than happy to be filmed doing so. Since then there have been crop circle competitions and manufacturers including Nike have used their logos rendered as crop circles in advertising. There’s even a group called Circlemakers that specialises in creating ever more intricate patterns and, like Doug

But it takes more than a video of a couple of guys with a plank and a length of rope to convince the UFO theorists and although I don’t wish to be disrespectful of sincerely-held views it always seems a bit strange to me to favour a theory you can’t prove over an alternative that can be demonstrated, filmed, and repeated on demand. The UFO theorists – who, given their refusal to believe the evidence of their own eyes, ought to be called the “sceptics” in this case – can point to lots of oddities and anomalies that suggest that Doug, Dave and their successors didn’t create all of the crop circles in the world; but then, we don’t know who painted all of the paintings in the world, but that’s no reason to suggest that extraterrestrials did. I raise the subject of paintings deliberately, because I don’t really care whether it was a couple of blokes or alien astronauts: my point is, crop circles are beautiful and they serve no practical purpose - to me that makes them art. Anyway, believe what you want to believe. But if you’re having one of those Dunkirk-spirit make-the-bestof-the-recession “holidays at home” this August, just Google one of the million or so regularly-updated websites devoted to the subject, choose a crop circle near you, and visit it.You’ll love it. Who needs art galleries?
