Competitions

Welcome to another packed edition of New Malden’s Village Voice. Within the next few weeks you’ll see posters and leaflets around advertising Malden Fortnight. We’ve a great programme again this year and hope that you’ll turn out in force. One new event for this year is ‘Funday Sunday’ to be held on July 10th up at Beverley Park in aid of Lunchbowl Network. I hope the sun will shine and that this great opportunity for New Malden to come out and have fun together can become an annual event – you can read more about this and everything else that’s going on on our website www.maldenfortnight.co.uk, and there’s also an article on page 16. Stalls are still available for Craft Fair Saturday (9th July), but hurry to avoid dissappointment. On a very sad theme, we’ve just heard that our Malden Fortnight Treasurer, Mr Bob Bridges, has passed away. Aged 90, he was away from home looking after his sister. Always helping others Bob was a truly lovely gentleman who will be very much missed in our community. God bless you Bob. I hope you enjoy our varied mix of articles and puzzles this month. As you may only get the Village Voice delivered every 2nd month you may not realise that a new edition is printed monthly. There are limited copies available to pick up in various distribution centres but it is also easy to read online – and you can still enter the competitions. www.nmvv.co.uk And remember, there wouldn’t be a magazine without all of our terrific advertisers. Try them out and let me know how you get on! Best wishes Jenny Stuart Editor and publisher The next edition will be available in the Library, Waitrose, Tudor Williams, Chicco Cafe, Heads Fine Foods, Tam Leisure and other outlets from 4th July Next copy deadline: 17th June Published by Malden Media Limited 36 Rosebery Avenue, KT3 4JS E: jenny@maldenmedia.co.uk 020 8336 2915 Also publishing www.nmvv.co.uk Worcester Park Life

history

In the late summer of 1870 a couple took up residence in Sycamore Grove. They were called Mr George Case and Mrs George Case; I use her full name, as this was how she publicly described herself (on posters and billboards). These were theatre people, pulling in crowds around the world with their act. They also had an interesting life offstage with more than a little scandal attached.

The case of Grace and her favourite by Robin Gill

The scene George had purchased a number of houses in the grove, setting up home in one (Garden Cottage) with his wife Grace, their housekeeper a widow called Anne Bradley and her daughter Elizabeth who acted as a servant (even though she was only 11 years old). It seems that the interior of the house resembled a miniature British Museum as they had collected many artefacts while touring China, India and Japan. They do not seem to have contributed to the social life of the village, the

nearest they came to performing locally, was an appearance at the Assembly Rooms attached to the King’s Head Hotel at Epsom in December 1872, and at that time they were selling their chattels at New Malden prior to their departure. These included an “elegant white and gold proscenium” which Grace used in her stage work. This was a large archway which was place at the front of the stage complete with curtains that opened at the centre, behind which Grace was able to change costume. Also included in the sale was a complete set depicting a drawing room, together with a back cloth, and a travelling luggage van (carriage), and the horse to pull it! They did return to New Malden in 1876 and 1878, living at another of George’s properties in Sycamore Grove called Haven Lodge. The Cases initially spent about 3 years in New Malden, but a large part of that had seen them travelling the country, and the only mention I have been able to find about them locally, is when George Case complained to the Local Board about the state of the drains in Sycamore Grove (a not unusual complaint in those days). This involved the pipes being taken up and re-laid to enable the surface water to be taken off. Earlier that year (1872), Grace had given birth to their daughter who they christened Grace Dolly Dot, but having such a young child did not stop the family leaving the village on their “Farewell Tour” throughout England in August, before their departure via Naples, to Bombay, which due to the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 could now be reached in 18 days. The players George Tinkler Case was born in Shoreditch on 27th July 1823, the son of Charles and Elizabeth. When aged only 14 he played a benefit concert on the violin at the Horn, Doctors Commons; his playing was described by critics as “perfect”. He married Selina Catherine Janson in London in 1846; she divorced him in 1860 on grounds of adultery. He had performed in many concerts up and down the country, initially playing the violin, but latterly the concertina which he learned directly from its inventor Charles Wheatstone. In fact, he organised a number of concerts in May/June 1848 to show the public how works by popular composers could be played on two, four, or even twelve concertinas. In 1849 heu

bought out the concertina manufacturing business of Joseph Scates in London which he subsequently sold to Boosey and Sons in 1855. He exhibited his concertinas at the Great Exhibition of 1851.Additionally; he was a member of the Covent Garden, (Royal Opera House), and Philharmonic Society Orchestras. He played an annual concert at Exeter Hall, Hanover Square which attracted an audience of 3000. He was a manufacturer, teacher of, author of books about, and arranger of music for, the concertina .Performing, took him away from his first wife on a regular basis. After she fell ill in 1856 and went to stay with her sister, he left their house and never returned, sleeping (he said), wherever he happened to be. He was proved to be living with Elizabeth Cruft another performer, and was the father of her child born in 1857.

Elizabeth Grace Cruft was born in Stepney on 1st May 1835, the daughter of William and Ann. She had a daughter also called Elizabeth Grace born in London in 1856 who died three years later. Another child was born in 1857 christened George Benedict Case, (who was sadly to die on the couples return to England in 1869 from California). Elizabeth changed her name to Grace Egerton, and performed at the Saddlers Wells Theatre as Perdita in Shakespeare’s Winters Tale, and Marion De Lorme in Richelieu in 1858, earning excellent reviews. The following year she decided to become a performer in her own right touring in theatres in the north of England singing excerpts from such productions as “The Invisible Prince” and “Love

Act one But it was only performing “A Christmas Party” a piece written expressly for them by dramatists Edmund Yates and Nicholas Harrington, that Grace was able to give full reign to her incredible ability to impersonate caricatures of Victorian society. This coupled with George Case’s music, made the performance a wonderful treat for audiences in the provincial theatres. The couple made their first appearance in London as Grace Egerton (Mrs George Case) and George Case in February 1861 at the Bijou Theatre, a concert hall attached to the Royal Opera House in the Haymarket. Again they were extremely well received, and the hall was regularly packed. They went to play further venues in London, performing their routine on over 2000 occasions. It is difficult to describe the act, and it probably wouldn’t

have the same appeal today. Grace was a quick change artist and impersonator. A sort of Victorian Joyce Grenfell, but much more besides. The characters she created were not what we would call politically correct, and were very much stereotypes; amongst them, Katty Mooney a maid from Ireland, Mrs Kubbards a landlady, Norah Wurzel described as a “country bumpkin” , Peregrine Prattelton, who constantly talked, and Mrs Ferret, of course a nosy parker. Her female Cyclops had to be seen to be believed. Grace sung, danced, and acted her way through a host of characters. In the second half of the performance she even took on the part of a “wizard of the east”, amazing the audience with tricks and disappearing from a cabinet. With a brief interval, the performance lasted three hours, with only George, and Mrs George Case on stage the whole time. After success in London, the couple embarked on tours around the world performing in Australia, New u

Zealand, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), India, China, Japan, America, South Africa and Canada. George had the pleasure of introducing the concertina to these far flung outposts, and was received with great applause. Their shows became increasingly popular, and audiences were astonished as Grace quickly changed costume as she assumed another character. These characters included military men of various ranks, an AfricanAmerican servant, and a Spanish dancer. She was well acclaimed as a “protean impersonator” enjoying an uninterrupted run of popularity for around 20 years. Their act while advertised as a duologue, found Grace playing the vast majority of parts, with George (when called upon) normally playing a representation of himself. To ensure the greatest publicity, prior to their arrival in their next port of call, there would normally be posters of Grace pasted all over the walls, and adverts would appear in the local papers. Grace became progressively more famous especially overseas; she had horses and cattle named after her, a gold mine in Australia, and quite bizarrely a Scotsman named James Scott Skinner, “blacking” himself up, and performing as a minstrel named “Mr Grace Egerton”. The “entertainments” did not always run smoothly, like when they were performing in Durban, South Africa in December 1877. Grace’s voice being completely

drowned out, by the loud croaking of frogs in a pit near to the venue.

Final act Montréal in 1881 was to be their last performance before they retired, but Grace suddenly fell ill and died, aged only 46. George returned to England with his wife’s body, and his young daughter Grace. He sold his property in Australia where they were to retire, and his properties in New Malden, it seems he never performed again, and died at home in Leyton High Road in 1892 aged 69. There is no recording or film of their act, only contemporary accounts in newspapers. Many of their tours were billed as farewell appearances (prior to retirement). Sadly this never happened; maybe their popularity was what caused their ultimate demise. Illustrations 1) Sycamore Grove 2) Grace Egerton 3) Performance in Melbourne in 1864. VVoice

Bill: Janet: Yes, and with my nephew moving away, I will find it less easy to get to my appointments at the doctors etc. Do you think they could help me? Bill: Janet

It certainly looks like it. They seem to cover a wide range of needs, and are willing to help not just with transport. I always find it difficult to ask people I don’t know. Have you used them?

Bill:

Not personally, but I have another friend who says they have helped her on a number of occasions, and have always been very kind and understanding. numbe Janet: That’s good to know. Is there anything else I should know? Bill:

Just remember they are volunteers – not a paid service etc. We need to give a few days notice of our appointments or other needs, then it easier for them to try to arrange for the help. Although my friend has always been fortunate to have the transport she needed, they may occasionally not be able to help – but I know they will try their very best. On another point, we also need to realise that the cost of petrol is very high these days, and my friend usually gives them a donation towards the cost. Janet: Thank you for encouraging me to think again about that the article.

Malden Fortnight Funday Sunday

events

10th July

Do you sometimes wish you could take part when you are watching your little one at school sports day hurriedly completing an egg and spoon race? Or hanker after another go at the 3-legged race? Are you a grandparent with fond memories of your own school sports day? Well the time has come for everyone to enjoy an old fashioned sports day for all the family. The Lunchbowl Network, a local charity which exists to feed and care for 450 orphans living in the Kibera Slum, Nairobi, Kenya , is hosting the event as part of the Malden Fortnight on Sunday, 10th July from 12-4pm and everyone is welcome! A full programme of events, to include assault/obstacle races and family group races, as well as the traditional

ones, will be posted on the Malden Fortnight website www. maldenfortnight.co.uk and everyone is encouraged to sign up before the day, or enrol for your particular race on the day if there are spaces. Bring your picnic rugs and settle down to a great family afternoon. A BBQ and Krispy Kremes will be on sale for lunch and a beer and pimms tent will be serving drinks and wonderfully the whole day is being match-funded by Barclays Bank, for which we are very grateful. Due to popular demand, we are holding The Grat NNew Malden Tug-of-War Chleng and are very keen to have as many street/friends/businesses sign up their team to compete for the coveted trophy, kindly donated by local engraver Paul Watkins. Get together a team of 8 or less, and for just £16, (£2 each!!) prove you are the deserved winners! We will also have a child tug-of war at £8 entry. In addition, we will be holding a sponsored walk (with optional fancy dress) for little ones round the perimeter of the park, and a 3-legged sponsored run for those slightly older (even grandma can join in!) Sponsor forms downloadable from the website, prize for the child who raises the most sponsorship! All in all, the day promises to be one of great family fun and we will hopefully build on the wonderful community spirit witnessed at the party in the park for the Royal wedding - and to top it all, every £1 raised will feed and care for 3 children living in terrible conditions, what more reason do we need? So please do come along, participate or support and enjoy! For all info please see www.maldenfortnight.co.uk and look for us in the Events section. VVoice

Food for thought

the city

by Justin Urquhart Stewart Here are two sobering facts about our current market. Firstly someone has agreed to pay $8.5bn – not million – for a loss making online telephone system. Secondly we are about to see a new flotation of a social networking site whose prospectus has the following statement: “we expect our revenue growth rate to decline and, as our costs increase, we may not be able to generate sufficient revenue to sustain our profitability in the long term”. Hardly the most positive of statements - especially in a prospectus designed to encourage investors to part with their cash. Despite this, the business has an expectation that it will be valued at around $3bn. This would mean that it would be set at around 13 times last year’s sales. However, maybe this is relatively cheap as only last week the Chinese social network Renren floated at an amazing level of 72 times sales!

CLINICAL HYPNOSIS

Kim Robinson

The first company is Skype, where the cash laden Microsoft are willing to pay just about anything to find something which will make them more appealing to the user and to get away from their image of being the unacceptable Shrek of the software world. The second is LinkedIn where they hope to entice investors into buying their shares in the vain hope that one day, at the end of the rainbow, there is a crock of gold for bold investors.

In my view this seems to have all of the investment logic of those dotcom days of over a decade ago. Just an update on the Greek “non default” default. As I have been warbling on for an age, a default by whatever nomenclature seems inevitable and frankly constructive given the current impasse. Of course the key issue is the strength of those banks that hold this debt and how much pain they could have to suffer. The FT stated last week that if the bondholders were to take a 50% “haircut” then the pain could be quite significant for some of the lead debt holders, with BNP Paribas taking €1.7bn, Commerzbank €1.1bn, and RBS -whose exposure was thought to be relatively small - an unpleasant half a billion Euros. Then of course we may well have others to follow, and for Ireland the RBS number with its Ulster Bank subsidiary could be significantly larger. VVoice

illage Voice It was almost 15 years ago that I came to the UK for the first time.

people

by Yoon Jeong Kim

Those days I was studying in Egham, Surrey, and it was a real treat to me from time to time that I managed to come to New Malden (there were at that time 5,000 Koreans living in that area) for a delicious meal at a Korean restaurant and grocery shopping at a Korean supermarket. Seoul, my hometown in South Korea, being far way (about 11 hours flight), New Malden seemed to me a place like home where I could relax myself and forget both loneliness and the stress of essay writing and exams. During those two years of my study, whenever I was on the train to New Malden, I felt like I was coming home. I was lucky enough to come to live in the UK for the second time, and this time I didn’t come alone, but along with my husband and a child. It was in New Malden, in which we

settled down, and where we have been living for two years now. While during those years of my study New Malden was like a hometown where I was looking for something familiar, something ‘Korean’, now New Malden has been a place where I struggle to search for something ‘British’ and something ‘local’ at the same time. Maybe this second time, I suppose, I am not so lonely any more, living with my own family; maybe my present life as a housewife is different from that as a student, without any direct connection to an outer institution; maybe New Malden, with a large Korean population (now about 20,000, I hear) and numerous Korean shops, appears quite similar to Seoul. And maybe Britain is not so foreign to me any more. For these and other reasons I have been trying hard to find a connection to, and an involvement in, the community, both British and local, and as far as I am concerned, it is the Christ Church, New Malden, where I have found a warm welcome and a sense of belonging. Though it would be difficult to compare the life in New Malden with that in Seoul, because of, above all, the difference in the sheer size (Seoul has 10,000,000 population), what I experience in New Malden on a daily basis is somewhat different from that in my hometown. What I find really great about living in New Malden – and actually living in the UK – is its diversity, and the fact that I could do some grocery shopping at a Polish shop in the morning, eat noodles at a Chinese for lunch, have an afternoon tea at a local English café, and have a curry at an Indian for dinner - all in the same street. I have had the privilege of visiting and living in New Malden at different stages of my life, and I have experienced it in its various aspects – ‘Korean’, ‘British’, ‘local’, and ‘international’. The length and depth of my life and experience here will be such that New Malden will become my second hometown and that I will really get homesick thinking of New Malden when I go back to Korea. Smile bright A bright white smile is associated with youth and vitality because as we age, our teeth start to discolour naturally. Whilst good dental health is an essential basis for your youthful smile, many external factors can make otherwise good teeth look unhealthy. So how can you address this? The first step is to avoid the things that cause your teeth to yellow in the first place. Smoking, coffee (particularly black coffee), tea, red wine, cola drinks and curry will all cause discolouring. If you do indulge, brush your teeth as soon as practical afterwards. For red wine or cola using a straw will minimise the effects as this delivers the liquid into your mouth without touching your teeth. Crunchy, raw foods such

as carrots, celery and apples are natural cleaners. They encourage your mouth to salivate and can help to rub off the plaque that sticks to your teeth.

There are many whitening toothpastes available although some can be pricey. Often the main ingredient in these toothpastes is baking soda. You can make your own paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda although it won’t taste great and you shouldn’t use it every day as it can be abrasive. If toothpaste and vegetables are not enough to make a noticeable difference, then the next option is to go for a teeth whitening treatment. It is possible to buy kits to do this at home and this is certainly a cost effective way of getting a bright white smile. However, treatment from a dentist will both achieve better results and be much quicker. VVoice

Watch out for local lady walkers June Moon Walks

New Malden residents Jane and Sue are about to take part in their 5th MoonWalk. Even though they are not runners, they put in a lot of training because power walking a marathon at pace is a challenge not to be underestimated. The event isn’t a race, but people clock up some good times. Jane and Sue aim to walk at over 4 miles an hour. They don’t treat it as a competition, but they try to maintain a walking speed that sees them home in around 6 hours. And it’s not just them. They train by walking from New Malden in all directions – Richmond, Kingston, Esher, Cheam, Banstead, Putney, and frequently use paths along the Thames in both directions. They think they are lucky because New Malden offers so many good walking routes that are interesting, safe and clean. On almost every session they see other Moonwalkers (identified by their

charity

caps and distinctive bra tops). They take at least 3 months to train for the MoonWalks and the organisers, Walk the Walk, recommend that participants gradually increase the walking distance until walking one long 20-22 mile walk about 3 weeks before the event. So when you see ladies marching through the Village wearing a pink hat or top, you know what they are doing.

This year’s London MoonWalk took place on Saturday 14th May. So a big “well done!” to all the local supporters of this (including the occasional lad or gent who takes part). You may have seen some of the TV coverage of the 15,000 mostly ladies in their decorated bras, power walking a marathon around London to raise money for breast cancer charities. It’s quite emotional many people take part because a loved one or friend has been affected by breast cancer.

This year Jane and Sue have decided to participate in the Edinburgh MoonWalk on 11th June because they think it will give them fresh impetus to walk in another city. If you want to take part in any of the MoonWalk events have a look at the Walk the Walk website on www. walkthewalk.org You can apply to join the MoonWalk via the website in October. You can register your interest at any time and Walk the Walk will notify you when the registrations are open. As well as the MoonWalks, there are other linked events. Not all of them are so physically challenging, so everyone can find an enjoyable event to suit them. For example there’s a fun SunWalk on 24 July in Battersea Park which is really easy for people in our area to get to. You don’t need to invest a huge amount of money in equipment. All you really need are good, comfortable walking trainers and socks. And a lightweight waterproof, of course. Jane and Sue have taken part in four London MoonWalks. You can sponsor them in Edinburgh www.walkthewalkfundraising.org/Susan_Hammond Why do they do it? Because they can!! And that makes them very lucky people. VVoice

Walter de Merton became the Lord of the Manor of Malden in 1240 – he later became Chancellor of England and Bishop of Rochester. He founded the earliest Oxford College (Merton) which was supported by revenue from his estates including

Malden. To this present day Merton College has the right to appoint the vicar of this parish. By 1585 the church was decaying and the Malden villagers petitioned Queen Elizabeth 1 asking for help – but nothing was done. By 1609 the church was beyond repair so another appeal was launched, successfully this time. Thomas Ravis, Bishop of London, who was born in Malden, and John Goode, Lord of the Manor, were both involved in the rebuilding, with contributions from many in the parish and beyond. The nave and tower were entirely rebuilt in red brick but the lower part of the old flint and stone chancel walling was patched up and retained. The work was completed in 1611. By the late 19th century the church was too small for the growing village so a large Victorian extension was built in 1875 (which is now the present nave and chancel), and the old church became our Lady Chapel. In 2004 a two-story contemporary extension was built for much needed rooms for informal services, children’s ministry, choir vestry and long awaited kitchen and toilets. VVoice

Loft conversions by Mode www.modebuild.co.uk

Loft Conversions… With many people unwilling, or unable to move in the current market, a well planned and well built loft conversion can be a very cost effective way of increasing living space. A good loft can also increase the value of your property, particularly within areas where property prices and space are at a premium and is usually a lot less expensive, and can be less hassle than moving home too! In many cases it’s an empty space filled with little more than boxes of 'stuff' that should have been thrown out years ago! Think how much more useful it would be to have a new large bedroom, perhaps with en suite, a home office or children’s play-room? Unlike an extension at the rear of the property it'll also mean you're not eating into your back garden either. What are the next steps? Firstly you'll need to measure how much height you've got The easiest way to tell is to see if you can stand upright at its highest point. Although there are no regulations

the

governing height, 2.3 metres is considered necessary over half the floor area to make a conversion worthwhile. A Dormer window extension will maximise headroom throughout the space but planning requirements often mean that this is put at the back of the house so it doesn’t change the house’s appearance from the road, and is why Velux windows are commonly used at the front to provide light and ventilation. As a general rule the steeper the slope (pitch) the greater the potential living space. Houses built before the 1960’s can be easier to convert as roofs were usually constructed from individual rafters. This is ideal for a loft conversion as it usually has a reasonably steep pitch and relatively clear space between the supporting framework. The existing joists were designed to hold up a ceiling, not to support a floor, so it will probably be necessary to fit a floor, usually supported on steel beams. If you’d like to find out more about converting your loft, or would like to discuss any other type of building project, why not give us a call? VVoice

Techno -Blog

This is probably the most non-technical TechnoBlog so far. The numbers listed above don't refer to anything digital. They are not the sizes of any binary file I can think of apart from 16 which coincidentally does happen to be the bit-rate of a CD. Those numbers actually refer to the various rotational speeds utilised over the last 100 years to extract sound from a round bit of plastic called 'The Record. The history of its name is as simple as the basic electromechanical process required to recover the sound from its surface. It is not a slang for 'Recording' as many might believe. In the early history of recording, the choice of what to capture to the rotating black disc was simple...The human voice. Once realized, it was not a giant leap to capture singers, small groups, famous speeches and finally orchestras. The equipment required was more or less portable. What we now know as a recording studio simply didn't exist. The discs produced were generally a 'one-off' so they were therefore , a 'Record of that performance'. These 'records' were 78rpm Shellacs mostly destined for libraries, public or private. However, as you might imagine, it wasn't very long before the idea of those 'records' being used for public performance occurred, and the rest, as they say...

Setting the Standard... By the mid 1950's the 12'' vinyl microgroove record standard had been set and has remained ever thus. Here we are over 50 years later and there is no sign of it going away. It has survived every battle waged against it?...Why? Part of the answer, I think, is simply history. Until the sales of CD's eventually overtook that of vinyl in the late 80's every single music milestone since the 1920's had been committed to the Record first. From Robert Johnson to Eric Clapton, Stokowski to Solti, Louis Armstrong to Weather Report. Presley, Miles Davis, Ella, Beatles, Dylan...the list goes on and on. Nostalgia? Possibly. I am not saying that everything that came after 1988 didn't matter. I am suggesting that as a medium, the CD, USB stick or even a download simply doesn't have the gravitas of the Vinyl LP. Then there is the cover artwork which is so much more tangible, and when it's spread over a gatefold sleeve! The care required to extract the LP from that sleeve, place it on the turntable, clean the Stylus and then listen out for that click and crackle from the 'run-in' groove. Finally that sound...it has a naturalness which is absolutely unequalled. It's real!! There is also the very real sense of ownership of something that has been crafted, not just manufactured. It is true that the steady increase in bit-rates over the last 20 years have vastly improved the sense of 'realism' of digital recordings. The recording industry has always recognised that 16, 18 and 20-Bit were never high enough numbers to capture the analogue wave form accurately, for either recording or remastering. Don't get me wrong though, my enthusiasm for the vinyl record doesn't mask the fact that you did (and still can) get a duff pressing or two. But you can also get a duff CD. Your internet connection can go down and ruin that download you almost finished. But

Vinyl

by Vernon Hamblin @Unilet

if the record is looked after, regardless of whether the original recording is analogue or digital the sound of your chosen artist from that bit of vinyl is still more natural. It's analogue and that's how we (as humans) hear. Finally, here's an interesting number...24. Another is 55... Vinyl records are now 55 years old, and 24-bit is now the standard used to record in the digital domain. So how do the two meet? Here's why... You see, the major record companies are now very reluctant, for obvious reasons, to use the original master tapes of classic albums.Virtually all of them are now archived on 24-bit hard drives anyway. However, all of those record companies continue to reissue iconic titles on vinyl. Indeed, modern artists also release their catalogues on vinyl and their recordings are digital. Recording entirely in the analogue domain is a rare occurrence nowadays. It is a matter of fact that modern high quality 180g and 200g reissues and all the latter day recordings released on vinyl are more often than not cut and pressed from 24-bit digital files. And there is nothing wrong with that because those files are generally of a very high quality. In fact, if the original source tape(s) and the 24-bit archive were presented back-to-back, most people would struggle to detect a difference. So the ancient format that is the Vinyl Record is actually bang up to date. It is more than capable of reproducing high bit-rate digital recordings and, by virtue of that fact, it generally sounds better than most Compact Discs. Don't forget, CD is still only 16-bit! Vinyl sounds better than just about any other format we can think of as well. Yes, we did have SACD and DVD-Audio for a while and both of these digital formats were 24-bit, but both of those carriers have more or less died...yep, you guessed it. Another format war! But irrespective of all of this, we are still left with the Vinyl Record happily playing 24-bit resolution in the analogue domain. Full circle?...Literally! Has this article been an unabashed and poorly disguised advert for the vinyl department at Unilet Sound & Vision? You bet it has. We currently carry over a thousand new titles on vinyl. We also have a similar number of immaculate and beautifully presented pre-owned records to purchase as well. All of which have been professionally cleaned using a VPI wet vacuum record cleaning machine. Cleaning your old vinyl is a service we can also offer. GET YOUR OLD RECORDS OUT! PLAY THEM! YOU'VE FORGOTTEN... VINYL IS KING! SOME PEOPLE THINK VERNON IS MAD...do all of this and judge for yourself. VVoice

Bring Out The Artist in You for Charity by Denise Shaw

Harry: Did you read that article about Malden Care last month? Joyce: Yes, It was really interesting – full of accounts of people they have helped. Harry: I called them the other day and asked how I might help. Joyce: But you live such a busy life – how could you fit anything else in? Harry: Well – first of all if I was willing to be a Duty Officer – I would only need to be available for one day a month at the most. Joyce: It sounds an important job – would you need training and where are their offices? Harry: I asked just those questions; and they reminded me that I would be linked with an experienced Duty Officer and need no more than a morning’s ‘training’. Also there would always be someone I could contact if I was not sure what to do. Also the work is done from our own home, so there is no travelling to do. Joyce: That sounds very organised and much simpler than I thought. Harry: As I drive, I offered to take people to hospital appointments etc. Joyce: How often might you be asked to do that? Harry: They couldn’t answer that, but said that I was always free to say ‘No’ if the day or time was not convenient. Joyce My car might not be suitable for all people, as it only has two doors. Harry: All those details they would record when you offer your help. Joyce I know I would be a volunteer, but the price of petrol these days would make it impossible for me to do many journeys. Harry: Malden Care realise this and they also ask clients to consider making donations towards the cost of their journeys – if they are able to. Joyce: Thanks for reminding me about the article and the good work the scheme does.

recipe

At this time of year you want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen so here’s a quick and easy supper that takes less than 25 minutes to create. If you’re not too keen on chilli then replace with a finely chopped spring onion.

Chilli prawn and tomato linguine Serves 2 Ready in 20 minutes

or according to the packet instructions until tender but still with a little bite. 2 Heat the oil in a large nonstick frying pan and fry the chilli for 1-2 mins. Add the prawns and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 mins, stirring all the time until they have turned from grey to pink. 3 Drain the pasta and add to the frying pan with the sun-dried tomatoes and the marinating oil. Toss well to mix and heat through for 1-2 mins. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately garnished with fresh basil leaves.. VVoice

Prime Minister Backs Allotments

illage VillageVVoice oice

follow the plot

by Libby Rothwell

Last month’s announcement that the review of local government’s statutory duties could threaten the future of allotments caused a public outcry, so plot holders were relieved by the swift denial that followed. In response to a question at Prime Minister’s Question Time on 4 May, the Prime Minister stated the following in relation to the press reports: “I was concerned when I read that report. I immediately checked that that is not the case. It is extremely important that allotments are made available. Many Members will find that when they ask about that in their constituencies there are massive queues for allotments as many people want to grow their own vegetables and understand more about where food comes from. It is a great movement, and it has my full support.” David Cameron could hardly say otherwise, given that

new malden s

he has said this will be the greenest government ever. Allotments are a major community asset; it is essential to keep the Small Holdings and Allotments Act 1908 Section 23 in place. Allotments are a sustainable way of providing economic and healthy food supplies at a time when food prices are soaring for a variety of reasons, including transport costs. The carbon footprint of allotments is minimal. According to Government statistics, there are about 300,000 people working plots in England and Wales, with a production capacity of 240,000 tons of food. The same amount of imported produce is equivalent to 116 journeys by 40 ton articulated lorries each week. Most of our plot holders live locally and walk to and from the site, so food travels from plot to plate in a matter of minutes. Allotments also provide a wonderful environment for wild life, especially bees and other essential insects, and a healthy and rewarding leisure activity for people

It ’ s NOT just a walk in the park!... This power walking class, with a mix of cardio, strengthening & toning exercises is proving to be the answer to shifting postnatal weight & re-toning your body after giving birth • Effective & safe postnatal workout • Burns fat, improves posture & strengthens core muscles • A one hour social class with time to chat to other Mums • Motivation to meet regularly to exercise • For all levels of fitness • Suitable for all buggies/pushchairs • It’s fun & baby comes too!

of all ages and backgrounds. Gone is the old image of the allotment holder as a pensioner (male, stereotypically) growing huge, inedible leeks for exhibition and keeping pigeons in the shed. Nowadays, plot holders are just as likely to be female, thirty or forty- somethings or commuters tending the plot after work. Allotments are often the only green space plot holders can call their own. It would be an act of environmental vandalism to remove the statutory duty to provide them: essential green space would be lost for ever if allotments were to be built on, as they almost certainly would be if the statutory duty were removed. Allotments have been a vital resource of food during war time and other periods of economic hardship, including that being experienced by many people today. Growing your own makes financial sense: working an average-sized plot can reduce food bills by over a £1,000 a year-- much more for organic produce. Addressing criticism that the Big Society idea was too vague, Mr Cameron said back in February: “What this is all about is giving people more power and control to improve their lives and communities.” Hooray to that say plot holders everywhere, and long may it last! A fete worse than death?

Keeping up with the Joneses An average local primary school can expect to raise several thousand pounds at its summer fair. This is a paltry sum when compared to a Primary School in Islington, which apparently managed to raise a remarkable forty three thousand pounds from an auction. Lots included a tour of the House of Lords with then Schools Minister (and parent) Lord Adonis, signed books from Nick Hornby and sundry signed items from its local football team, Arsenal. Baking cakes and selling raffle tickets just can’t cut it by comparison.
