Editor’s letter Articles
I’m sitting writing this in glorious weather and thinking how lovely New Malden looks in the sunshine (OK, I know everywhere does – but we’re a bit biased, aren’t we!). I’m not even going to look at the long term forecast and will happily assume that the sunshine is here to stay for our action-packed month of July, particularly after our soggy start to the Summer. This month’s issue of the Village Voice is packed full of details of forthcoming events during Malden Fortnight – which will be great fun, come rain or shine! All the favourites are back on the programme from the fabulous dog show and annual Parade to Beverley Park’s Funday Sunday (in aid of The Lunchbowl Newtwork), concerts, cream teas, choral recitals, craft fair flower shows, food festivals and much more! As ever, please do get involved and support this wonderful celebration of our community. After all, 2012 is being dubbed the “Summer of Celebration” (maybe something to do with that big sporting competition also taking place in July and August just a few miles away in Stratford!!) so let’s join the party and have a ball in New Malden!

Malden Fortnight 2012
Over the next couple of months, London and Kingston upon Thames will be playing starring roles in the London 2012 Olympic Games, so it was only right that we chose that as the theme for The Malden Fortnight this year. Many of us will be involved in different aspects of the Games whether as a spectator at the games or on television, as an organiser or assistant at some level, or even as a purchaser of memorabilia. We should be proud that we can celebrate this momentous event within our village. This year we have some new sponsors and I would like to thank them along with our other sponsors, clubs, societies, organisations and individuals who have contributed their time, effort and money to help bring about our celebration of New Malden. Moving on
Local author Carl Sims reviews his time in New Malden I’m in a mood of reflection. This started with me viewing my shed, I know that sounds odd but it’s a fine shed, and quite expensive when purchased. Seven years ago my eldest daughter and I travelled to Ripley to buy it. It’s fair to say, I don’t move fast on buying things unless I get the nod from her. I liked quite a few, not least a Wendy House, but she reminded me all my daughters were grown-up, or in the process of doing so. The whole experience was enjoyable and we were both a little proud when the men came to erect it. She and I spent a great deal of time standing within, chatting over cups of tea. Now, I find myself reminiscing about that time… Regular readers may know I moved to New Malden some thirty years ago. However, before being married, my then wife and I lived in Wimbledon. We couldn’t afford anything in SW19 – not even a share in a bus shelter. My mother, obviously keen I should be as far away as possible, noticed on a trip to a friend in Bexley, there was a house in Kent we might afford. Subsequently we pointed our car eastward to a place called Rainham and bought our first house. Ok, like most I say ‘bought’ but in truth you only ever buy after 25 years. It seems madness now but we ‘bought’ a threebedroom semi with gardens plus garage for £12,000! For two months we travelled to and fro patiently decorating, and it’s a funny thing, the smell of new paint still reminds me of that lovely house. We made close friends with a couple, who after a few years, packed up and moved – to New Malden. We followed. Strange isn’t it? They could have moved to Worcester Park, Motspur Park, Raynes Park or any other park you care to mention and we most likely would have followed. But no. They chose New Malden and I’m pleased they did. Although after a few years, they again moved on but I’m still here. And talking of moving on, I’m in the process of doing the same. It’s a wrench. I have four children - three were born here; Kingston hospital. All four went to school in New Malden. They have grown, made friends, had parties and generally drove me mad. But they too have moved on. I had neighbours who said they would never leave – like friends round the corner – who finally relocated to Godalming, or another couple who went to Bournemouth. But where do I go? “Anywhere you like and the sooner the better” I hear you say. But it’s a difficult choice. Although ‘choice’ is when you can choose but I haven’t chosen anywhere. That’s the trouble with New Malden – it tends to wind its self into your very being. I don’t think you realise this until the ‘For Sale’ goes up.
8
But up it went.Viewers viewed and someone had the audacity to make an offer – which I accepted. Now this was getting real. I was actually leaving! That was a few months ago and numerous questions from solicitors are being answered through gritted teeth. Nonetheless, the outcome is written: people who I don’t know, have never met, will sleep in my bedroom, bathe in my bath, lounge in my garden and in a blink of time will consider this place, my place, to be their own home. Odd. Now I need to find somewhere to live – or rather, somewhere different to live. But I have a thought: what do you think my chances are in the shed…? Carl is author of ‘Ahh! Sims’ available Kindle/Amazon.

Getting there (in a roundabout way) by Robin Gill How many people can describe the Malden Roundabout at the Fountain? What is there actually on the island in the middle? Of course there is the fountain itself erected in 1982 thanks to the New Malden Branch Of The Rotary Club (this was to replace the original fountain which stood nearby, and was demolished in an accident in June 1932 (see Fountain Of Youth in Village Voice May 2010). But, what else is there upon this Malden icon (answers at the end of this article). Quiet byways Looking at a map of the area from the early 1860s, there was no Presburg Road, and no Burlington Road, just a slightly widened turning off the road from (Old) Malden to Coombe with a guide post to tell you, that was the way to Kingston. Where the Norbiton Park Hotel was to stand; there was a clay pit in a field set aside for brick making. The Hotel was built around 1867, and has stood on the same
site ever since. By 1897, houses had been built the length of Malden Road (High Street) on one side of the road from the railway line to Kingston Road; the drinking fountain had been erected in the middle of the junction (1894), between the hotel and Kingston Road. Burlington Road had been built upon (earliest houses Wakefield Terrace 1873), and Presburg Road, under construction, had one house in it (probably the coach house for “Vernham House” the doctors premises in Kingston Road (now Pearson Maddin). The police station had been built on the corner of Burlington and Malden Roads in 1891. Digging the scene As mentioned in the Village Voice (October 2010) “The Coming Of The Land Gondoliers” the trams transformed the junction at Malden from a quiet turning to a noisy and reasonably busy intersection. Work had started at the Malden end of the route in April 1905 in front of a large crowd, and after the first piece of ground had been broken in Kingston Road by the Mayor Of Kingston (HC Minnitt), about 100 men started work building the route towards Kingston, but not one man was a local man, causing the council to write to the construction company with little effect. The making up of the route at the junction also left the normally tidy Malden Road in a “disgraceful state” between Kingston Road and Burlington Road. Such a state that some children had found it impossible to get to their schools, and another letter had to be written to the company. The line was completed and opened in May 1906. For the first few months the trams terminated at the Norbiton Park Hotel (Fountain) as Burlington Road had to be widened to accommodate the 4 foot 8½ inch gauge, but April 1907 saw the route to Raynes Park station complete. A large house (Derby Lodge) on the corner of Malden Road and Kingston Road had to be demolished to enable the road to be widened to accommodate the terminus and change around of the trams. Here, I learnt from June Sampson (SC 16/04/2008) Harold Victor Bauer was born on 28th April 1873. Harold became a world renowned pianist, and took up residency in the United States in the early 1900s where he died in 1951. The family did not stay long at Derby Lodge as Harold’s sister Winifred was born in late 1874 in the new family home in Hampstead. The corners of Kingston and Burlington Roads also had to be “smoothed out” to allow the passage of the tram rails and overhead wiring. Trolley buses (routes 604 & 605) replaced the trams in September 1931 but still operated the same route from

Kingston to Wimbledon travelling down Kingston Road and Burlington Road through the Malden area, until they in turn were replaced by motor buses in May 1962 (Route 131). War damage and development Malden suffered the scourge of the V1 flying bombs (doodlebugs) in 1944 when 22 fell and exploded within the borough. From 18th June over a period of 80 days over 2500 citizens were affected by these raids, causing some evacuations to take place. In total 44 doodlebugs passed through the region, of which half fell and exploded on impact. Eleven people from Malden and Coombe died, and sadly the last civilian to be killed by enemy action in the war, was a 73 year old widow Kate Allflatt who was living at 1 Kingston Road (built at the turn of the century) near to the junction when it was hit by a flying bomb on 22nd August 1944. The damaged and now derelict property was still standing ten years later together with other ruined properties caught in the same blast. Such properties were Derby Villas, which had stood in Malden Road since the late 1860s. By 1955 the houses was very dilapidated with ivy growing all over, and one side of the properties was covered with a large advertising hoarding. The council had ambitious plans for the area. Most of the damaged properties in Kingston Road had been removed, and pre-fabs built in their place
(sites in Balgowan Close and Charnwood Close). These were built just after the war to help with the acute accommodation problem locally. More permanent solutions were found when eight 2 bedroom bungalows were built in Balgowan Close in 1959/60, and at the same time planning was granted for the erection of maisonettes, flats, and bungalows in Charnwood Close (Norton and Martin House). More ambitious plans were mooted in the mid 1950s with proposals for shops to replace the houses in Kingston Road as far as Rodney Road with a cinema in the site of Balgowan Close. It was rumoured that a branch of Burtons the tailors would be occupying the site at the corner of Malden and Kingston Road, but for some reason the company did not take up the premises, and it became an electrical showroom operated by Ketts (Pricketts) Ltd The other schemes never came to fruition as the demand for residential properties outstripped those for retail. Hazardous crossing The crossing point between Kingston and Burlington Roads had become notorious for accidents. With no indication of right of way, vehicles coming out of Kingston

Road and turning into Burlington Road were not always aware of traffic moving along Malden Road. With the presence of trams and then trolley buses they should have had right of way, but Malden Road had been there longer, and was a straight road. A census carried out in 1937 showed a maximum of 915 vehicles per hour passing through the junction between 2pm and 3pm, and this had risen in 1955 to 1556 vehicles per hour between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. There was a “slow” sign on the police station side of Malden Road, but a similar sign on the Worcester Park side had been removed. In December 1952 Edith Willbourn, the wife of a retired policeman from the New Malden station was killed when her bicycle was in collision with a car at the junction. The public had previously demanded that traffic lights be placed there to control vehicles. The motorist involved stated that he had “looked both ways before entering the road crossing” and saw no one approaching. After an appeal for witnesses over the BBC, a verdict of accidental death was recorded as nobody had seen the accident. Something had to be done, and the council received a verbal communication from the Ministry Of Transport in July 1953 that, provided work was started before the
beginning of November a roundabout or traffic lights could be erected at the intersection. Land had to be compulsory purchased in Malden, Kingston, and Burlington Roads, but not only were the local council involved, and the Ministry, but also the Surrey County Council. There were so many negotiations to undertake and permissions to be obtained, that work was unable to start by the desired date, and the Ministry hesitated in whether they would give grant assistance. The Ministry contacted the council again at the beginning of 1954 asking that if funds were available could the scheme still be carried out. A positive response was given, and details of the project for a roundabout were sent to the Ministry, who in turn sent back a raft of amendments they wanted to see. All bar one of these were rejected by the council, but then the Engineer for the County Council suggested that traffic lights would be a better (and cheaper) option. Again the council had to write back stating that this preference had been discussed and rejected months earlier. Work begins After the promise of a grant from the Ministry of over £13000 and the County Council of over £4500, the derelict sites (Derby Villas) opposite the police station, and Nos

1 & 3 Kingston Road were cleared, and the building of the roundabout started on 25th April 1955 and completed in six months. The construction also involved the re-routing of the overhead trolleybus wires and the smoothing of the corners of the junction. Street lighting had to be replaced at a cost of £400, and the new wiring for the buses cost £4750. The cost of the roundabout itself was £23,500, and was to be 112 feet in diameter planted with shrubs, similar to the roundabout nearby on the Kingston By Pass. Pedestrian crossings in Burlington, Kingston, and Malden Roads were incorporated with island refuges, and guard rails. Mr Lewis of Wimbledon suggested a fountain on the roundabout regulated by a time switch, and a cut-out in high winds by a vane on top of the police station. The roundabout area has more or less stayed the same ever since, apart from the zebra crossings being replaced by pelican crossings with traffic lights. Now the council has set up a “strategic working party” to look into the locality including the roundabout. The future? What do you think should be on the roundabout? The fountain is cracked, and has not operated for about 18 months. Would you like to see it replaced, and by what? Maybe you think the roundabout should be purely functionary, and anything else would be a distraction to drivers. Contact Hannah Rees the neighbourhood manager at Kingston Council hannah.rees@rbk.kingston.gov.uk or, at Kingston Guildhall, High Street, Kingston Upon Thames, KT1 1EU with your ideas.
Answers: As well as the fountain, there are six lampposts (conveniently numbered 1-6), two trees (one willow plus another), a brick container (which I assume contains the pump for the fountain), four directional arrows (one which has a redundant sign for Old Dairy Gate [Firman Close]), a circular flower bed with details of which organisation has sponsored the planting at the time, and notices from the Rotary Club relating to their crocus appeal to eradicate polio. Even before we started up Groves Residential I used to enjoy reading the Village Voice magazine on a monthly basis and when we opened in 2010, we felt there was no better way of getting our name out to the community. We have always been very pleased with response to the advertising and also the help and professionalism provided by Jenny. We are always careful to monitor the source of our enquiries and we know it gets results and is read by thousands of local residents every month. Niki McGibbon Groves Residential

View from the city
by Justin Urquhart Stewart A New Generation of Peers
The sums as yet may seem small when compared to the leviathan banks that we are all so much more familiar with, but there is a vibrant and growing deposit and lending service which I believe has the opportunity of creating a very exciting and timely alternative at this financially sensitive moment. Now reaching a figure of £250 million, this is still relatively minor in its impact - but in an environment of financial constriction, its impact may well be greater than some expect. So far, relatively few have heard of the ‘peer to peer’ facilities that are just starting to burgeon into a more popular domain. The concept is simple, as all the best ideas usually are. It is to use the internet as a matching facility between willing depositors and lenders and willing borrowers. Such an idea is hardly new, as in the past we have seen the growth and application of mutuals and co-operatives as a means of local financing but unlike our continental colleagues, these have never really broken through in any scale and size to the consumer market. I suppose to an extent this is because there was no need for such a system in earlier times, with higher interest

rates, more competition, better returns elsewhere and credit that was as easily available as water. Now we are in a new world, where the ‘new normal’ is a very different beastie, with suppressed interest rates (thanks to Quantitative Easing and money printing), low money supply due to bank risk aversion and capital constraints, together with erratic stock markets that react more to political ineptitudes and indecision than corporate strength, results and profits. Not actually a very pleasant situation, all told. So now we are in a position where smaller companies are desperate for more liquidity, but of course at the right price and margin. However, we are also in the position where we want to encourage more entrepreneurship and dynamism in the economy, and yet this is the very moment when such funds seem to be drying up. If we set up over 400,000 new businesses a year in the UK, then you would think that this should be a key target for the politicians to try and address. Additionally, we should also consider the other side - we all know that it has been the much oppressed depositors that have suffered most under this low interest rate era (especially as there are far more savers than borrowers). Many older folk have seen their income decimated as interest rates have plummeted to levels often such that they are losing real value below the rate of inflation. Thus a mechanism where better deposit rates can be achieved (and at various rates according to the levels of risk that a depositor finds acceptable), has to be a valuable alternative. However, there are of course still some significant risks. Firstly, these operations are as yet unregulated, so the depositor has little recall or rights and is certainly not covered by the £85,000 bank deposit guarantee. This is an area that should be addressed and I see no reason why they should not be brought under the ambit of the regulator; this in turn can only serve to encourage further consumer confidence and consequently greater participation. This to me is an attractive concept, but one that I believe can and should be taken much further. Why could we not have regional and local facilities whereby local depositors and investors could be investing and supporting local businesses directly? In effect, we could be recreating the same facilities as the old regional stock exchanges that formed such a vital financing need for industry years ago. I am sure some will recall that in 1945 we had 45 stock exchanges around the UK. Now whilst we don’t need to recreate such antique structures again, we can redevelop the concept into a modern facility. Around the country I have found quite a number of very vibrant entrepreneurial groups, and growing numbers of business angels. These are often formed by either more sophisticated individuals or previously successful business people, therefore a service which is simple and straightforward and accessible for the smaller investor and depositor could well be a very attractive alternative. A simpler method of funneling investment to where it is needed to stimulate growth has to be beneficial to all and sundry. Given the current situation with the structure of our national finances, I am surprised that the government has not been addressing these initiatives more directly, and acting to encourage further development. This doesn’t need to involve any financing but rather acting to foster the right environment and regulation. In fact, how refreshing it would be if a bank could consider redesigning part of its business model to adopt such a structure. A new ‘3i’ (not the private equity company) in my view is needed - Imagination, Initiative and Invention, where depositors can get a better return and borrowers get more choice - not just nationally but also regionally and locally.

Royal Washout Fails to Dampen Jubilee Spirits A quick word to all those who decided to host their Jubilee street parties on Saturday and Monday rather than on the day itself - Good on you! We weren't jealous. Nope. Not a bit. Ploughing on despite having your plans for a once-in-a-lifetime experience scuppered by a deluge from the heavens is probably about as British as you can get, so by my reckoning that means we had the more authentic experience. Totally. There was something perversely enjoyable about huddling beneath a flimsy gazebo in the middle of Woodside Road on Sunday afternoon, trying to shelter from the torrential downpour while gloomily nursing hot mugs of tea. Union Jack flags dangled limply from trees and fences all along the road, while the Queen's accession speech played on a nearby amp. And yet despite this - perhaps it would even be fair to say as a direct result of this - the occasion was imbued with a definite sense of community spirit. Being compelled to cluster together for warmth and dryness forced us to get to know people we'd only ever met in passing despite living in the same road for years. Revellers were later joined by residents from
neighbouring Burberry Close, Carlton Road and Selborne Road as the weather began to pick up.Various activities carried on throughout the evening, including table tennis, chalk drawing (which was enthusiastically seized upon by the younger residents, even when it began to intermittently pour again) and several fiendishly difficult jubilee-themed quizzes, as well as music provided by local indie musician Malory Torr. A history board assembled by Peter and Betty Hunt displaying pictures from the Golden Jubilee summed up the essence of the event best; despite the grand significance of the Jubilee in the eyes of the media and

the wider world, for us, and I'm sure for everyone who held street parties over the weekend, the occasion was first and foremost about the community coming together and sharing in its local identity. The sheer number of parties which took place across New Malden, such as the festivities in Beverley Park, are testament to this. To watch the celebrations on television and feel thoroughly British is all very well, but to connect with your neighbours and feel part of a wider, yet still very much local, community is a genuinely uplifting experience. At an impromptu breakfast fry-up next morning this sentiment was very much evident as we folded up the bunting and eagerly discussed the possibility of organising a regular, annual get-together. And if that falls through, well... only another ten years to our gracious Majesty's Platinum Jubilee. She can hang on that long, right? Ed Hebbourn

Richard Challoner School – Ten Years On Time goes so quickly in a school! It is difficult to believe that at the end of this academic year, I will have been a teacher at Richard Challoner for ten years. I shouldn’t be surprised as time always goes faster when you are busy and having fun. From the first day, walking in as a nervous PGCE student, the sense of a community happily and diligently going about its business, has pervaded my understanding of Challoner. Busy because of the constant stream of events – sports fixtures, music concerts, drama productions, art exhibitions, trips and fundraising ventures – to name but a few. Also busy because of the incredible changes the school has undergone in the last ten years. There have been at least four major building projects, as well as countless interior remodelling projects that have transformed the school from a rather dated, illresourced patch work of buildings, to a state-of-the-art school ready to provide cutting edge education. Strong community feel Despite its physical transformation, the school retains its sense of community. A community where teachers and pupils respect one another and can often be seen having fun together. Teachers generally choose to stay
at Challoner and often send their own sons here. This stability is underlined by the fact that the school has only had three head teachers in its 53 year history. Soon after arriving at Challoner, a senior member of staff said to me, “I never wake up thinking ‘oh no – work today’. I always know I’m going to have a laugh and to enjoy my day.” I didn’t really think he was being totally honest, but ten years on I can truthfully say I still wake up looking forward to the day ahead. It really is a unique and special place.

Exciting times Over the last three years we have challenged ourselves to build an outstanding Sixth Form. We have seen numbers on roll increase dramatically (there are five applicants for every one place) and academic achievements consistently improve. Last year, our top achieving student gained 5 A* grades at A-level. The next stage of our development starts this year at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 3rd October when we will be opening our doors for girls to enrol in our Sixth Form for the first time. As well as this, we are opening a unique post-16 Cricket Academy with specialist cricket coaching built into the timetable. Despite these changes, we haven’t lost sight of our tradition and we keep a firm grip on our Christian values, whilst seeking to embrace innovation and inspiration. The last ten years have been great, but I know the next ten years will be even better as the school goes from strength to strength. Sean Maher Deputy Head

Clubs - Young KVODS Young KVODS is an award winning amateur youth musical theatre company based in Kingston for young people aged 7 to 16 years. The aim of the group is to give children in the local area an opportunity to perform a full scale musical in a purpose built theatre once a year. They already have a number of members from the New Malden area. In 2008 Young KVODS performed their first musical Guys & Dolls Jr with a cast of 35 children. Just a year later they were chosen to take part in the Leatherhead Drama Festival and the Woking Drama Festival. Members of the group aged 12 & over performed the premiere of Rags to Riches. This play was adapted from the book of the same name by the author Richard Roberts especially for the group. They excelled at both the festivals with fantastic responses

from the audience& adjudicators alike. At Woking they were not only asked to perform again at the Awards evening but the group also won best youth play and Janice Smith, the wardrobe mistress, won the adjudicator's award for her wonderful costumes. In the same year the main group also performed Disco Inferno; with a cast of nearly 50 children and earned a nomination for a NODA Youngstars award. As the group won the Woking Festival they were chosen to take part in the NDFA All Winners Festival in 2010, an incredible honour. They were thrilled when the group won this festival, and in turn were crowned best youth group in the UK The main part of the group went on to perform Annie Jr in 2010 which welcomed lots of new members to the company as well as two professional stunt dogs playing the part of Sandy! In the same year they took part in a charity concert at the 02 arena. So now the group are in their 5th anniversary year and in January members performed in Sunday Night Live at Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, home to Phantom of the Opera.

Recollections of Maldens and Coombe ‘The way things were’ Can you please help us by providing your recollections, memories, stories and anecdotes of Old Malden, New Malden and Coombe? Have you any photos or even home movies which show the way things were?
please contact: Maldens and Coombe Heritage Group C/O Mary Clarke 135c South Lane New Malden KT3 5HQ.
The newly-formed “Maldens and Coombe Heritage Group” is set on collating local history that does not appear in any history book and which solely remains in the memories of the people who lived here. The memories can be as simple as a one-line memory of a street, a building, shopkeeper, a school teacher, the way things were, anything you wish to share! It can be a paragraph recalling some aspect of the village, a special day perhaps, fields of corn, the pottery, the Kingston bypass, absolutely anything. Local history is, what it says, ‘local’ and your memories are OUR history and without your help present and future generations will have no reference, no source and the history will be lost forever. Your memories, photos, etc. (if you are willing to share them) are like pages of a history book that have been separated and have blown, by the wind of change and ravages of time, to all the different streets in the area!! We are intent on collecting up all these loose pages such that the local history is pieced together. In time, the aim would be to make the recollections available to all – perhaps in a loose leaf news letter or as a separate article in Village Voice, etc. In all instances and circumstances privacy will be maintained! No addresses will be published and only first names would accompany the memory so as to add a personal touch. Photos, etc. would simply be copied – not kept - and you would therefore retain the originals. If you can assist us and wish to share with us your recollections and old photos, we would love to hear from you. Please write to “Recollections” c/o Maldens and Coombe Heritage Group, 52 Blagdon Road, New Malden, Surrey KT3 4AE or by email, recollectionsmchg@gmail.com (PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY ORIGINAL PHOTOS OR DOCUMENTS – JUST ADVISE US HOW WE MAY CONTACT YOU.) Scouting in New Malden
This might all seem a far cry from our gentile Cream Teas in New Malden but the ethos remains the same. Scouting (whether a Beaver, Cub, Scout or Explorer) can really help to encourage young people to make a real and long-lasting commitment to their communities and develop a wide range of valuable skills through adventurous activities. (And here in NM, they make some pretty yummy scones and a mean cup of tea, too!!) For more information about Scouting in New Malden (particularly if you’re interested in volunteering), please contact Jane Pringle on 020 8287 1935 or jane.pringle@onceyoupop.com
Saturday 30th June sees 1st Malden Scout Group hosting its second ‘Cream Tea’ event as part of Malden Fortnight’s calendar of activities. And, if last year’s success is anything to go by, (which raised hundreds of pounds for both the Scout Troop and the charity, The Lunchbowl Network) everyone should make a date in their diary to pop down to the gardens of the group’s Headquarters on Tadworth Avenue from 2.30pm to be waited on by some of New Malden’s finest young people (and of course their ever willing mums and dads in the washing up tent!) Serving Cream Teas to the residents and friends of New Malden is just one example of how Scouting continues to play an important part in the community. For over 100 years (the 1st Malden Troop was first founded in 1908) many local young people aged from 6 – 18 have had the opportunity to make new friends, learn skills, develop talents, gain confidence and above all HAVE GREAT FUN by becoming involved with the Scouting ‘movement’ – not to mention being encouraged to take part in voluntary and charity work. Scouting - much like the Guides and Brownies – has recently enjoyed a real renaissance and a boost in popularity. It’s “cool”, it’s “awesome” and with activities from canoeing and camping, rifle shooting and mountain biking regularly on offer, it’s no wonder that waiting lists across the country are currently sky high and kids just can’t get enough of it! On a more serious note, the Scout Association has recently been using digital media as means of communicating with other young people – as well as trying to challenge preconceptions of both Scouting and ‘youth culture’ in Britain today. A short film, called ‘Expect More’ – which can be viewed on YouTube – was launched in the Spring and has been highly acclaimed for its efforts in showing the positive impact that youth organisations and charities have on young people. Why not take a few minutes to have a look……

Green Pastures Local resident David Ballard describes links between Uganda and New Malden For over ten years I have travelled in Africa from my home in New Malden. During that time I became aware of the difficulties women face where, so often, they are left on their own to support themselves, their children and other dependent relatives. With minimal education and few opportunities to work, their lives offer little hope for improvement; their struggle is to exist from day-to-day and find enough food to eat. There is no state help with food or accommodation and little given for education and medical needs. I had a vision to do something to help at least some women, not by sending a donation somewhere but by doing something for the longer term that would help them to help themselves, their families and others. Thus in 2008 this vision to set up Green Pastures (GP) as a care, counselling and training centre in Uganda came into being. With a Christian base, its aims are to help women in desperate situations to becoming selfsupporting. Land was purchased, which was bush – now there is housing for our administrator and her family and other needy people, plus a classroom for training. Women of various ages come with no skills and are instructed by a tailoring teacher on how to make clothes. Some have now progressed to being able to sell clothes they have made. We plan to employ some of these women to make clothes to sell to raise additional funds for GP; others we hope to help start their own businesses. Also, there is a crafts teacher who instructs women to make jewellery and craft items for sale. In addition a small agricultural and poultry scheme on the site provides a certain amount of food for the family of our administrator and other needy people. Any remaining produce is sold to raise funds to go back into supporting the centre. At GP the women are cared for by offering counselling in their many different situations and also some are given additional financial help. Lives are being changed. This project is registered in Uganda as an NGO. In time we believe it will be self-supporting.
Green Pastures is still an infant project and we (my wife and I plus a small band of supporters) are working hard to develop it further. My wife and I and others hope to raise funds by selling some of the jewellery made by the women of the crafts class – all this is made by hand and results in some colourful and fashionable items – at the coming Craft Fair in New Malden High Street on Saturday 7 July. All proceeds will go back to the women in Uganda and into supporting Green Pastures.

Dry weather by Pippa Greenwood
After all those weeks in early summer when it seemed unable to stop raining, many plants will have been lulled into a false sense of security. And those of us who look after the plants are also likely to have become a little too used to not worrying about what and how to water to best effect, and how to minimise the effects of dry weather. So if you’re now finding yourself battling with the effects of a more text-book summer, here are my tips for coping: Mulching really does help to keep the moisture in the soil. It’s important to make sure the soil is really well watered BEFORE you apply the mulch, so water well or wait until after there has been a heavy rainfall. Then around the area, covering the roots of the plant (or preferably a bit further) shovel on well-rotted manure, composted bark or garden compost. Don’t forget that vegetables as well as flowers benefit from mulching. A slow but steady supply of water is generally more use and more appreciated by plants than intermittent heavy drenching. Newly planted trees and shrubs establish better and suffer drought stress less if the soil is never allowed to dry out completely. Installing some perforated or permeable pipe beneath the soil surface or on the surface but beneath the mulch provides just what they need. If you’re making any new plantings for the patio right now, don’t risk them becoming drought stressed before their moment of autumn or winter glory comes. When planting up late season patio pots, decrease the effects of the summer sun by lining the insides of the pot with bubblewrap polythene. When you do need to use extra water on your garden, try to apply it in the evening or otherwise as early as you can in the morning. Less will be lost by evaporation and there will also be less likelihood of plants suffering scorching. However much you’ve taken a fancy to a gorgeous looking plant in your local garden centre, don’t buy it right now. In hot, dry conditions it is much harder for a plant to become established and much more likely that it’ll suffer stress. A bit of temporary shading, perhaps in the form of some shade netting (available from garden centres) or some large, leafy branches driven in to the soil, will help to keep things a little cooler during the hotter weather. It may not look great, but it could save you a packet in replacing plants. Vegetable plants can be covered with netted cloches (like the Giant Easy Net Tunnels available from my website) to achieve the same effect – and these will also help to keep off many potential pests too. Siphoning water out from the bath is a great way to re-use domestic water. The usual tiny quantities of soap or bubble bath used by most of us won’t cause any problems with plants and makes a great drink for trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. Remember that some plants are more tolerant of dry conditions than others, so next time you do shop for plants, it may be worth bearing this in mind. On the whole, plants with silvery or densely hairy leaves are pretty drought
48
tolerant, as are those whose names imply that they are of Mediterranean origin. Some of my favourite droughtresisters include: Convolvulus cneorum – stunning silvery leaves and miniature white flowers, often with a touch of pink, which resemble those of morning glories. Rosemary – this shrub has great purple flowers and wonderfully aromatic foliage, perfect for cooking, and when mature many people use the wood to make barbeque skewers which are said to impart a delightful rosemary aroma to the meat. Senecio maritima – a pretty divided leafed plant with dense hair on the leaves making it look silvery. Gazanias – with their large orange, brown and burgundy flowers and silvered leaves, they look a treat in patio pots of summer borders. Lavenders – aromatic leaves and perfumed blue, lilac purple or white flower spikes, this cottage garden favourite is also a magnet for bees. Geraniums and their cousins, Pelargoniums, are both very drought resistant, and come with foliage that is often attractively marked and pretty flowers. Pelargoniums, usually the more flamboyantly coloured of the two, are not hardy but great in summer containers and the herbaceous geraniums should last for years.

Ellie and I can organise games, provide and operate the party music, set the food table, clear away, wash up etc leaving you time to do other things! For little girls, we also provide a “sparkly makeup” service and for boys a “tattoo parlour” (temporary of course!) as your guests arrive or to calm them down before eating. No job is too big or small. Ellie and I have set up “Party People” to help you host a brilliant one and to raise funds for a tall ship voyage which we would like to take part in during the summer holidays. We both need to raise £200 and hope we are very competitive charging £35 for a 2 hour party for both of us including the makeup and tattoos, compared with other adult makeup parties which are much more. We even have a special offer of £30 for the first 5 people to book “The Happy Party Helpers!” We offer a pre-party meeting to discuss your needs and then a hassle free party for you- give us a try, you won’t be disappointed! Safer Neighbourhoods by Sgt Nick Ellis In the spirit of helping everyone help themselves to keep safe and crime free, I would like to take time this issue to advise you about a new crime trend that has been identified. Primarily elderly people have been receiving a home visit or a phone call from people who are pretending to be from their bank. These people try to get important bank details from the householder - and can be very persuasive and credible. It is very, very important that you remember the following : Your bank will NEVER ask for detailed personal information They will never attend your property unless by appointment Do not part with any personal information if you are unsure about who is collecting it Visit your Bank personally if you are unhappy in any way at all about discussing via telephone On the same theme of bogus callers, there have been a number of instances where callers have pretended to be from a company servicing smoke alarms. They try to persuade residents to allow them in to check their smoke alarms. Some wear a uniform of some sort but do not

identify where they are from or who they are. If you get such a visit remember: The London Fire Brigade or Council can check smoke alarms Make an appointment; do not let random callers into your property. Any persons attending will have identification which you MUST ask for Some residents feel embarrassed about asking for identification. Bear in mind that any authorised caller ie a gas meter reader will be only too happy, and indeed should, offer identification. If in doubt, at any time, ask the person to return at a pre arranged time by which point you can have checked his or her bona fides, and, if you live alone, asked a friend or neighbour to stay with you. If you would like any further information then contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. Contact details for Beverley ward are 020 8721 2750 and for Coombe Vale 020 8721 2515. Old Malden can be reached on 020 8721 2517 and St James on 020 8721 2595 If you would like to report a crime then dial 101 or, in an emergency, always dial 999. Having issued this warning, please bear in mind such instances are very rare. We live and work in one of the safest boroughs within London. Let’s all continue to work together to keep it that way. Whilst out and about don’t forget about our local meetings for residents. Upcoming ones are : Beverley & Coombe Vale SNT 4th July 2012 - Drop-in surgery Methodist Church on the High Street at 2pm till 4pm 18th July 2012 - Drop-in surgery Methodist Church on the High Street at 10.30am till 12.30am On a final note, a reminder of our opening times here at CI Tower, Monday - Friday 12.30pm - 5.30pm Saturday 10.30am - 3.30pm Sunday - Closed Wishing you a sunny and problem free July. Dad’s Diary
Tick.Tock.Tick.Tock. So, look no further, the reason that forty-somethings are at the bottom of the happiness curve is the sudden, horrifying, realisation that they are turning into their The old believe everything, the parents. Perhaps this is what Larkin really meant when he middle-aged suspect everything, the wrote ‘ They **** you up, your mum and dad ‘ - that there’s no escape, that the gene time-bomb will get you young know everything. Oscar Wilde in the end - the only good news is that with the onset of Cocktail Party Deafness you don’t notice the ticking Miserable Middle Age getting louder. It’s slow, insidious, but you start to notice This refers not to a Horrible Histories sketch but changing: to the results of research into People over forty-five are more things • visits to the dentists get longer, happiness. The answer my friend Come on Professor, the reason isn’t unknown, it’s glaringly obvious. Do you remember those things that your parents did that really, really annoyed you; irritating, patronising silly things that they used do or say when you were a child or a teenager. Sadly, in middle age, history starts to repeat itself. I hated it when my mother took out her hanky, licked it and then wiped that dirty mark off my face (Mind you I was twenty one at the time). What did I find myself doing to daughter number two the other day! How irritating was it when my Dad called me by my brother’s name or the dog’s or viceversa – probably as annoying as my daughters find it now. I even found myself jangling coins in my pocket the other day - just like him. Noooooo!
