Welcome to

our May edition Dear All,

Looking back over the past few issues of the Village Voice , I seem to have made a lot of references to the weather. So, this month, I thought I’d try and write my short intro without any reference to the W-word! However, I think this might be harder than I thought, as I was hoping to highlight the start of the Summer Fair season, especially at our local schools. So much time and effort goes into making these events a success (with hours of work put in by armies of volunteers, Parents Associations and teaching staff) it really is the icing the cake when the sun actually shines (sorry, there I go again). But in truth, what really makes these events go with a bang, is the huge support we see, year on year from the local community. Do check out details of our forthcoming fairs and fun-days inside this issue and make a note on your calendar to pop along if you can. Fun for all the family guaranteed! Following on from the success of recent Party in Parks (the Royal Wedding in 2011 and last year’s Diamond Jubilee) a new outdoor event comes to New Malden on May 11th, courtesy of a visiting New Orleans Jazz Band who will be entertaining the crowds at Beverley Park (for free!) from 12 noon. Refreshments will be on sale all afternoon with all profits going towards the Lunch Bowl Network (more details on page 28). So, whatever the weather (OK, I give up!) have a great May and please keep me up to date with what you’ve been up to in and around New Malden and let us know about any events or activities you’d like to see featured in coming issues of the magazine. Don’t forget, you can enjoy not one but two Bank Holidays this month, so let’s all look forward to the start of our long awaited summer! Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher P.S. Please remember to mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17thMay if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the June edition.

History

The Maldens And Coombe Heritage Society Tits hemembership Society which was formed in June 2012 and has increased steadily and now

stands at over thirty. We meet regularly on a monthly basis at New Malden Baptist Church in Kingston Road. The meetings are usually on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm and last for about two hours. It is advisable to confirm the date of the next meeting by contacting Mary Clark 0208 949 3157 or Robin Gill robinislander@hotmail. com The object of the organisation is to promote awareness of the Maldens and Coombe and its rich history and to compile an archive of that history. To that effect we started a “Recollections” project led by Julian McCarthy our archivist, who is very busy encouraging anyone who has lived in the area to put down on paper or discuss with him, their memories of the district. These will placed in small booklets to encourage other recollections. Julian can be contacted at 52 Blagdon Road, New Malden, KT3 4AE. Another project, this one led by Chris Coke, is to obtain memories of Ann Packer. Ann won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 competing in the 800 metres. She is a former teacher at Coombe Girls School and Chris would like to make contact with any former teachers and pupils who remember Ann. She now lives in Cheshire with her husband Robbie Brightwell, who was captain of the Great Britain Men’s Team at the same Olympics. He is also a former teacher at Tiffin Boys School in Kingston. Further projects being undertaken by members include the history behind the names on our war memorial by Graeme Hodge, and the history of New Malden Baptist Church by Shaan Butters. I am sure that Graeme and Shaan would appreciate any information that you can give them. Most of these projects are organised by these individuals, with the society being there to lend a hand when needed. Speakers at our recent meetings have included Amy Graham on the 213 bus route, and Richard Holmes on local pubs. These are ongoing projects, and both Amy and Richard would love to hear from anyone with information on either of the subjects (they can be contacted via the Society). At these meetings we try to assist members with their own research, whether local, or family history and

we set aside a certain time for questions, discussion, and advice during the evening. We also encourage members to bring in and share documents and photographs relating to the history of the local area. Jim Reilly, one of members is currently developing a website for the Society, which we are hoping will be up and running shortly. We have been lucky enough to have received guided tours of New Malden Library conducted by John Jones (Customer Services Supervisor) and we hope to organise further tours in the future Recently we had a stall at the Farmers Market in St Georges Square, where we were able to distribute leaflets, and talk to interested parties about the Society. We are hoping that this will result in an increased awareness of the Heritage Group, and an increase in our membership. So, as you can see we are a varied group, if you are interested in local history and would like to learn about the Maldens and Coombe, please come along to one of our meetings.

Events

Malden Fortnight Saturday 6th July– Sunday 21st July No apologies for bringing to everyone’s notice, relatively early on, the not so small matter of The Malden Fortnight. Although the Festival takes place during the first two weeks of July, much planning is needed to ensure we have an entertaining and interesting number of events and to enable schools and all participants to have enough time to organise participation in these events, especially the Parade of Floats on Saturday 6th July. This year’s Parade theme is ‘Country Life’ and we are hoping our participants will use a broad palate when coming up with ideas for their walkers and floats, from butter to tractors, magazines to vegetables – all will be welcome. Last year’s events were particularly successful with a sold out High Street Craft Fair, a much increased participation in the Parade, a fully attended Dog Show, sold out Music concerts, children’s Day of Performance, not to mention the marvellous Fun Day. We are building on last year’s success and including extra events such as a historical walking tour and a Fun Run. As usual, we are inviting all Junior and Infant Schools to enter our ‘Design a Logo’ Competition on the ‘Country Life’ theme, the winner of which will see their design used as the promotional poster for the Fortnight. The winner and two runner ups all receive a cash prize along with the schools themselves. The events are organised by the Malden Fortnight Festival Committee, composed of local voluntary members. It has been run for the last 29 years and is now an integral part of local event planning. It is important to stress that the aim of the Fortnight is to celebrate our local community. We are always on the lookout for new members, from any walk of life, who will be able to bring new ideas to the table or even be able to help in a practical manner. We are currently looking for a new Treasurer and organiser for the Craft Fair. The majority of our events are either self-funded, i.e. raising income from sales of tickets, or from sponsorship. Whilst we are particularly proud and grateful to our sponsors this year, we are always interested in new sponsors, especially local businesses, to help improve both the number and quality of the events.

8

We also help to organise, along with New Malden Rotary, the Christmas Parade/Lights on the last Friday in November. We would like to give a big thank you to all the local businesses, individuals and organisations that helped raise the funds necessary to purchase and install the new Christmas Lights, they were spectacular. This year’s event was the most successful ever, with over 400 children meeting Father Christmas in St. George’s Square. Those of you have participated in our events in the past and wish to do so again can contact us through our website, www.maldenfortnight.co.uk where there are online application forms for the Craft Fair, Parade and very shortly, 2 brand new events the Fun Run and Historical Tour. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible participate in or enjoy the Malden Fortnight. Peter Findlater Chairman – Malden Fortnight.

New Malden History Murder, marriage, and majesty by Robin Gill O n Tuesday 21st January 1936 Malden and Coombe awoke to the news it and the country had been expecting. The King had died, and Great Britain had a new monarch. George V had passed away at 11.55pm on the Monday night at Sandringham. The country was prepared, as an announcement had been made 2 ½ hours previously that his life was “moving peacefully towards its close”. What only one man (at that time) knew was that the King’s life (which was ending) had been moved closer to its conclusion by lethal injections of morphine and cocaine. That man, Lord Dawson Of Penn, the King’s physician, administered the injections himself at about 11pm. This was done

partly to alleviate the suffering caused by waiting for his end for the King’s family, and partly so the announcement of the King’s death would appear in the morning edition of The Times, rather than some lesser evening publication. It was only with the disclosure of Lord Dawson’s diary on 1986 that these facts came to light. The BBC cancelled all their programmes except for news bulletins, the shipping forecast, and gale warnings. The only other broadcast on the radio were the chimes of Big Ben every quarter of an hour. God save the King On the Wednesday (22nd) the chairman of the Malden local urban district council Mr Alan Dinsdale Young led an assembly of council officials and firemen outside the council offices (now Waitrose), where they stood in silence as the flag was raised from half mast (in memory of George V) to full (in proclamation of Edward VIII). Most social gatherings were cancelled including a Malden Choral Society concert, and an Old Malden Ratepayers dance. A memorial service was held at both Christ Church and the Congregational Church (URC) on the Sunday where a special form of service was used. As a mark of respect all shops in Malden remained closed the following Tuesday (the day of the funeral), when a united and civic service was held at Christ Church in the afternoon conducted by the new vicar Rev Arthur Habershon assisted by the Rev Geoffrey Longsdon (St James), Rev Wallace Heaton (Methodist), Rev Ronald Williams (Baptist), and Rev Herbert Baldwin (Congregational) who gave the address. The Council later that evening sent a message of sympathy from the 33,000 residents to the Royal Family including the devotion of the inhabitants for the new King. There was another special service at St Joseph’s conducted by Father Eugene O’Sullivan assisted by Major Gerard Petit. Major Petit who was also chairman of the local branch of the British Legion sent a letter of condolence to the new King, and received a telegram on reply from the private secretary expressing the monarch’s thanks. It was during Edward VIII’s short reign that Malden and Coombe received its Royal Charter of Incorporation with all the pomp and ceremony over four days in September 1936.The civic mace presented by Merton College is one of only a few to contain King Edward’s cypher. Royal crisis As with most of the country, Malden was unaware that King Edward was already involved in a relationship with (Bessie) Wallis Simpson an American who had been twice divorced. The affair had been conducted in secret since 1934, and it was after Wallis divorced her second husband Ernest Simpson in October 1936, that it became clear that Edward intended to marry her. This became public knowledge in early December when

newspapers first put forward the opinion that if the King was to marry, his wife would not necessarily become Queen, an idea the King had put forward to the Prime Minister in November. This was rejected by the cabinet, and by the Dominions of which Edward was King. At that time, the Church Of England did not allow the remarriage of divorced people who had living ex-spouses. Edward as supreme head of the Church was left with no other option than to abdicate, which he did on 10th December, and made his broadcast to the nation the following day. I n New Malden on the 14th December, in the absence of the Mayor (Mr Charles Spiers) the proclamation of the accession of George VI was read by the deputy Mayor Mr Alan Dinsdale Young at the entrance to the council offices above which flew two union flags and the borough flag. A bugler from the Grenadier Guards played both before and after the proclamation. which was witnessed by a small group of people including other councillors. The ceremony ended with the National Anthem.

Coronation carnival The Mayor after questions from councillors regarding the expense of the forthcoming Coronation celebrations in May 1937 stated that he would pay for everything except for the street decorations, for which £600 had been allocated. This included the purchase of commemorative tea boxes and 4000 mugs for the children of the borough. Coronation Day was set for 12th May (the same date intended for Edward), and Malden looked suitably dressed for the occasion. Hung across the street and pavements of Malden Road were paper garlands in an assortment of colours together with other bunting. This gave the effect of a series of triumphal arches while on each lamppost there hung a painted shield. Every window in the council offices was surrounded by garlands which reached up to the clock. Underneath the clock was a plaque with the portraits of the King and Queen with the Royal Cyphers. Above the main entrance, blue and gold cloth was hung with the single monogram G. More garlands hung from the flagpole on the roof, and the next door fire station was covered in garlands and banners, with a large red and gold crown on the tower. Many of the shops were decorated with flags, bunting, and royal cyphers, and houses were adorned with bunting and flags hanging from upstairs windows. The main event of the day, which was very wet, was the carnival procession. The entrants assembled in Malden and Coombe Sports Ground (now Manor Park). The parade which was a mile long, then wended its way via Malden

Road, Thetford Road, Westbury Road, and Kingston Road past the council offices, cheered on by crowds sheltering under trees and umbrellas enroute. Leading the way were the bandsmen of the Legion Of Frontiersmen, followed by the local postmen. The local Rotarians had a tableaux based on the nursery rhyme about the old woman who lived in a shoe, the children came from the County Council’s children’s homes that used to stand in Kingston Road. The scouts put on an historical pageant detailing events leading up to the formation of their movement. Next were the Boys Brigade complete with dragon and crusaders (St George and the Dragon). Following them were the Girl Guides showing how their organisation came about. The council vehicles including fire engines and refuse trucks then passed, followed by the local British Legion with “Malden’s Henpecked Husbands” up to their elbows in washing up while their wives powdered their noses. The Surrey Comet float depicted a printing press in true Heath Robinson style, but the rain came down so hard that the machinery became frozen, and failed to operate. A local industry based in Blagdon Road (Norbiton Potteries) included a man making pots on a wheel. The procession proceeded via Dukes Avenue to

Beverly Park where the judges presented prizes for the best entries. These included Mr C Northam on his bicycle dressed as a telephone box, and Mr TC Bird (Chairman of the Chamber Of Commerce) and colleagues who decorated their lorry like a Viking galley complete with warriors. The evening saw dancing in a large marquee complete with sprung floor followed by the King’s speech, a special searchlight display by the local anti aircraft company, and fireworks. Residents were also able to enjoy a funfair which had been set up in the park, and was open until the following Monday. The elderly and invalided were not to be forgotten, with 100 disabled ex servicemen and 180 pensioners sitting down to a meal and concert in the Malden Wanderers pavilion. Other parts of Malden held celebrations later in the week. The residents of the Dickerage Lane area held a carnival and sports at the recreation ground in the Saturday. All were encouraged to wear carnival costumes and to take part in the procession led by a Tin Pan Alley Band, from the Triangle to the Recreation Ground via Clarence Avenue, Laburnum Grove, The Crescent, and Mount Pleasant Road. The sports were opened by the Mayoress; there was also a Punch and Judy Show and Cabaret with dancing in the evening. Each child received a chocolate medallion and a balloon. The tenants in Thorne Road (now replaced by Georgia Road) gave the children a coronation tea opened by the Mayor, and later there was dancing to the residents own accordion band. In those days there was no gathering around the television set to watch the ceremony, in fact by the end of 1937 there had only been just over 2000 TVs sold in the UK so it was unlikely that anybody in Malden had one. The BBC did televise the event. They had three static cameras at Apsley Gate (Hyde Park Corner) to transmit pictures of the coronation procession coming down East Carriage Road. Most people still listened in on the radio, secure in the knowledge that even though this was radio, the broadcasters would be wearing morning suits for such an occasion. After all, this was the BBC.

View from the City Treasuring our Treasure by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Learning to

treasure our successful industries has never been a great trait in the United Kingdom. We tend to take such winners for granted and only praise their value after their demise. The many famous UK car marques have either died or been sold abroad. But this is not to say that our car industry is not successful. In fact we now export more car value than ever before, but sadly run by owners from elsewhere around the globe and not

here.

One key area we should treasure and recognise is the high end car engineering around Formula One where we are recognised as a global leader. Although the sport has a high profile, the engineers and their businesses seem to get little recognition, and one of their frustrations, especially amongst the component suppliers, has been the lack of available engineers with the requisite skills. Why do we insist in characterising engineers still as car mechanics with an oily rag and a spanner, as opposed to the Germans who have far higher respect for their Herr Doctor Engineers? Another such winner for us is the production of Whisky. This industry has been through torrid times but now, with great marketing, is certainly booming globally - especially in the Far East - although suffering somewhat closer to home. Sales in China rose some 8% last year. The total export sales have jumped 87% over the past decade and now account for 80% of Scotland’s food and drink exports by value – which, by the way, accounts for 25% of the total UK food and drink export figure. In terms of market by volume, I was surprised to

find that France in fact was the largest market which, although falling by nearly 25% last year, still accounts for just under 154 million bottles. New business : new style stock markets I was delighted to hear of another success story, or at least the beginning of one. I met with Barry Laden, a delightful entrepreneur who has established a clothing business from scratch right here in the UK, in the East End of London. Unsurprisingly it is called the East End Manufacturing company. Evaluating that with great local skills, good branding (yes the UK brand still carries a lot of weight) and the change in the cost of production and freight from China, London can now be competitive again. Now add to this that he has been able to go to the new “stock markets” of this generation, the peer to peer or crowd funding structures, to raise his capital, and he is off, up and running. In fact he was able to raise all he needed within a short period, cost effectively and with the investors he wants to have. Politicians please take note. Here is innovation working. So whilst the older banks are creaking to repair their balance sheets, others are sowing seeds for the next generation. Good luck Barry to you, your company and your investors.

Shafts of Light? The good news is that someone thinks it’s getting better. Last week the OECD announced that the UK is “on track to recover to its long term growth rate” later this year. Sadly of course this rate is only 2%, but from where we are now that has to be encouraging. They pointed to their more reliable longer term composite leading indicators which seem to have a good track record in identifying changes in economic moves six months further ahead. Taking this further they even pointed to a more encouraging growth picture within the Eurozone. They indicated the US as having the strongest recovery in the developed nations, but that the Eurozone would remain below par albeit with signs of growth picking up later in the year. Let me temper this though with the figures from the WTO, which reduced its global growth forecast for trade from 4.5% to 3.3%. The historical longer term trend line for trade is around 5.3%, and fears of greater protectionism especially amongst some of the developing nations certainly seems to be having an effect. I have also come across some data from the German Finance Ministry which show the progress that is being made. Sadly of course, being positive, it gets very little coverage here in the UK. It would seem that Ireland, Spain and Italy will all have improving current account balances this year even venturing back into the black. This is a significant change. Also I note the improvement in the unit labour cost figures that are showing a steady improvement for many of the weaker Eurozone nations and which, if taken from the year 2000, would now show Greek unit labour costs lower than that of Germany! Quite what they are producing may be another issue, but the bitter pill they swallowed may just be finally showing some positive results. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the private investor.

Fire safety Dear readers

A s your local Fire Station Manager I am responsible for ensuring that the fire

appliances within the Royal Borough of Kingston respond to fires and other emergencies in the area and prevent fires from causing harm or damage to people and property. In order to achieve this Fire Fighters at New Malden, Kingston and Surbiton Fire Stations carry out various work to help people stay safe from fire and other emergencies, in the home, at work and in New Malden’s other buildings. Accidental fires in the home are the main cause of fire deaths and we do all we can to reduce these fatalities. We work hard to educate people about what they can do to protect themselves from fire. We do this by: Home fire safety visits - firefighters visiting people in their homes to give advice on fire safety and fitting smoke alarms for free if necessary. Working with other organisations who work with people we know are most at risk from fires and help

us to reach and protect them. Informing people at a young age about the dangers of fire, how they can protect themselves and the consequences of making hoax calls. We have successful and award winning initiatives to do this, including a schools team. Reducing deliberately started fires - we have a specialist team to tackle fire-setting behavior by young people and another working with partners to reduce fire related crime. Advising on fire safety in the workplace – if you are an employer you are responsible for making sure you and your staff know what to do to prevent a fire in the workplace and how to escape if a fire does break out. Carry out inspections of buildings - to improve the safety of the buildings we work with developers at an early stage, carry out inspections to make sure they meet fire regulations, and we take enforcement action when necessary. In future editions of Village Voice I hope to be able to give you some advice or feedback on some of the trends, issues and experiences that occur in our area, with a view to making you safer from fire. Look out for my article in the next edition relating to Rubbish Fires In the meantime if you would like more information about the free Home Fire Safety Visits then please call our free number 08000 28 44 28 or alternatively visit the London Fire Brigade website : www.london-fire.gov.uk/HomeFireSafetyVisit.asp Kind Regards Nic Myatt, Station Commander , New Malden Fire Station

St James Players’

SMalden, t James’s Players, based in Bodley Road, New will be presenting four performances

of Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy “How The Other Half Loves” on May 15,16,17 and 18 at 7.45pm. Celebrated as one of the best plays of its time ‘How The Other Half Loves’ is a complex but classic Ayckbourn comedy. A trio of married couples are caught in a web of tangled plots and misunderstandings building to an unforgettable climax during the course of two dinner parties given on consecutive nights. With clever dialogue and ingenious staging this is Ayckbourn at his best and a production not to be missed! Tickets, £8 each, are available from the group’s Box Office on 020 8408 0638 or look on the group’s website www. stjamesplayers.co.uk for a link to on-line booking (please note there is a small additional charge for online booking). St James’s Players, founded in 1966, is linked to St James’s Church, Bodley Road, and rehearses and

performs in their church hall. The group has an active membership of almost 50 members and rehearses two or three times a week. Each year the group stages two plays (one in May, one in October) for which members have to audition and a Christmas show – often but not always a pantomime. St James’s Players’ next productions will be “Calendar Girls”, between 23 and 26 October and “Aladdin” between 18 and 27 January 2014. In January 2012, the Players (at the request of Kingston’s Mayor at the time, Councillor Patrick Codd) performed the first ever pantomime at the Rose Theatre. This performance of “Dick Whittington”, with an audience of over 640, raised funds for the Mayor’s charities, the Born-toosoon campaign and Macmillan Cancer Care, so you can tell this is a thriving group, well worth supporting.

Spotlight on.. Gordana’s House of Sewing

W elcome to Gordana’s House of Sewing, a place open to all who want to learn how to sew, improve their home décor , up- cycle, meet like-minded people, be creative and inspired. This is my story…. I started to be interested in making clothes when I was 10 years old and although I have done many things in my life, sewing has remained my dearest hobby. And what a hobby it has been! Especially after the birth of my two daughters and buying a house! I bought a second hand sewing machine when I got a quote on how much it would cost to dress the windows. I simply didn’t have the money to pay and making my own seemed a much more attractive prospect. I also went on a sewing course and it didn’t take me long to make my

first simple Roman blinds and curtains for my home. This is just the first of many stories of mine, which proves that we all can make something bespoke and save ourselves lots of money . My girls are now of the age when they go to many birthday parties and I often make gifts for their friends which are always admired and appreciated. These are just simple things, such as ballet/ football bags, decorative buntings or other personalised items, but the recipients like them a lot because they are hand-made with a special little person in mind. I also make and alter clothes for myself and mychildren as well as embroidered personalised cards and plaques for special occasions. Sewing has “come back” and I hope more people will want to learn how to sew. It is not only beneficial to you, but your children and grandchildren

too. Children will want to join you when they see you sewing and, from my experience, they love to do it and are good at it! I currently teach my children and a group of their friends. I started the sewing classes in February this year and all the children love their newly acquired skill! My sewing studio is a beautiful room in my home , equipped with several sewing machines and many other tools of the trade as well as a huge range of lovely haberdashery. I run house parties with the title “DON’T THROW – SEW!” where women can swap, restyle or up cycle their clothes and learn some basic alteration skills. I also run children’s fashion parties at your home, where all children will make either a personalised cushion, a stuffed toy, a hair clip/band,a tote bag or a skirt. I hope this story inspires you enough to pick up a thread and a needle or just look at my website to see what the children and I have made so far. ”A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You can also meet me in Tudor Willams Haberdashery on Saturday 18th May 2013 between 10am -12 am, where you can just watch me making some lovely things or get involved in making them too. The Better Life Eggs-it Strategy

A pair of hybrid chickens, Sweet Pea (Rhode Island / Maran) and Pepperami (Rhode Island / Plymouth

Rock), hardly qualifies as a flock. Even so, two eggs a day, almost every day, soon leads to an eggcess. And, while neighbours sometimes buy a box of four, and other times we swap them or give them away (eggs, not neighbours), our ethos is to try and make use of whatever we have. Unfortunately, unlike Anne, I have always been a fussy eater (the sort of child who made mealtimes an endurance test for everyone). I’ll gladly eat an egg boiled, fried (preferably hard, not runny) or poached (preferably in a tent in Norfolk). Omelettes, though, leave me cold, as do soufflés. While just the thought of an egg custard makes me want to gag - well done, school dinners, circa 1978. Clearly, a little inventiveness* was called for. Many homemade cakes are suitable for freezing, and who isn’t partial to a piece of farmhouse or carrot cake. And it’s a great way to use up surplus carrots. Mayonnaise proved to be so easy that even I could

do it, with just egg yolk, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and water. Take a tip from me though - make sure it is salt and not white pepper. Anyhow, once I had mayonnaise under my belt, literally, somehow, my ambitions grew. Remember when egg shampoo was all the rage? Well, no need to shell out when you’ve eggs to spare - just add olive oil and water (note to self: find way to grow own olives). You too can have that silky sheen in no time - it helps if you still have plenty of hair. Do note that

rinsing with water that’s too hot will cook the egg and render you fascinating to passing horses. When we ran out of mundane career choices for an egg, Anne brought out the big guns - in the form of a battered Home Management guide she’d rescued from a car boot sale. Egg whites will bring a shine back to leather and, apparently, stiffened egg whites can tackle greasy marks on leather furniture. Not that we have any to practice on. Anne was all for trying an eggy face pack - on me. I wasn’t too sure how well that would work with a beard though. Eggshells are very useful in the garden, as a good source of calcium. They can either be ground up and put in the chickens’ grit, or added to the compost bin for the soil. I’m also reliably informed that eggshells are a great defence against slugs and snails, but our molluscs must have developed superpowers. I tried valiantly to muster support for a village eggrolling event, but it proved only marginally less popular than my unseasonal painted egg hunt. In the end, I painted a few faces on the shells and stuck them on the garden fence, as an anti-killjoy device. The jackdaws didn’t quite know what to make of them, but the killjoys were kept at bay. Next time we have a surplus, Anne wants to try making scotch eggs. * No egg was wasted in the making of this article. By Derek Thompson

Bring in the May By Kate McLelland O ne of the best indications that summer is about to arrive is when Britain’s hedgerows explode with the

pink and white blossoms of the hawthorn. The hawthorn is one of those quintessentially English trees: although quietly unobtrusive for most of the year, it bursts into spectacular life in the late spring, with flowers crowded so densely together they look like snowfall. In the autumn it glows with clusters of red berries.voursome Italian diced pancetta instead. No wonder the tree features so strongly in ancient folklore. The old name for hawthorn was “may” and the flower of the may tree has long been considered a symbol of hope. It even gave its name to The Mayflower, the famous ship that sailed from England in 1620, transporting a stalwart band of pilgrims to build a new life in America. As its alternative name suggests, hawthorn was central to ancient May Day celebrations. The old Celtic festival of May Day was known as ‘Beltane’ after the Celtic god of light, or the sun. The beginning of summer was also celebrated in Ancient Rome at the Floralia festival (dedicated to the flower goddess Flora), which took place at roughly the same time. May Day celebrations in Britain were probably a hybrid of both traditions mixed up with Druidic tree worship, and the introduction of Christianity did little to dispel these pagan traditions. On the first day of May, villagers would wake at daybreak and roam through the countryside, gathering flowers and hawthorn twigs to decorate their houses. A maypole – usually the trunk of a birch tree, stripped of its branches and decorated with ribbons and flowers - was set up in the middle of the village green. In olden times maypoles were constructed with three rings on the top - the highest and smallest was made of hawthorn. The community danced around the pole, singing traditional songs, while the men of the village performed Morris dances and the prettiest girl, dressed in floral garlands, was crowned Queen of the May. Occasionally a May King was also chosen, and the pair ruled over the festivities. In Elizabethan times, the king and queen were given the names ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Maid Marian’. These celebrations were derived from ancient fertility rituals and the ‘greenwood marriages’ that took place provide clear evidence of this. Often young girls came home from their country rambles with more than a garland of flowers. As one observer wrote: “I have hearde of tenne maidens whiche went to set May, and nine of them came home with childe.” May Day festivities reached their height in England during the Middle Ages but in 1644 the Puritans passed a law which made them illegal. This attempt to repress the celebrations eventually failed, mainly because they were

30

too deeply rooted in rural culture. When the monarchy was restored some years later and Charles II came to the throne, people all over the country put up maypoles as a sign of loyalty to the crown. For the next two hundred years the old customs continued, but interest in May Day traditions began to fade. They enjoyed a brief revival in the Victorian era but any connection to fertility rites was deliberately overlooked and maypole dancing was reduced to an innocent children’s game. Sadly by this time the hawthorn – once the embodiment of hope for the coming summer – had also lost its significance, becoming just another tree in the British landscape.

Seasonal recipe

Cheese, Bacon & Onion Pie Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early

summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion filling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use flavoursome Italian diced pancetta instead. Makes 8 Slices, Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling Pastry: • 225g plain flour • 1 tsp mustard powder • Pinch of salt • 115g butter, chilled and diced • 4-5 tbsp iced water Filling: • 175g smoked bacon pieces • 4 onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 200g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • Beaten egg, to glaze • Tomato salad, to serve (see Tip) To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour between your

fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly

until just smooth then flatten into a disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190째C, 375째F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper. Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the filling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fingertips. Trim off any excess pastry. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked. VVoice

Garden Hide and Seek by Pippa Greenwood H owever much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide? A washing line may be essential but rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours consists of two large poles with a line in between, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a selfclinging plant such as variegated ivy it won’t need any additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary. Summer flowering clematis or sweet pea will look great too. If you do use a more vigorous climber then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning. Decrepit sheds or moth-eaten garages can be a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and re-paint it. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature. If the garden can be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour. If your heating is fuelled by gas from an unattractive and enormous cylinder or oil from a large green tank, you will know that they have to be sited in an accessible position. You can use hazel wattle hurdles to hide them which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence. Try using standard fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible. Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house? Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position. Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier Expert or garden centre. local careTrellis is

available in a range of shapes and need not be straight edged so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in the neighbour’s garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline. If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants. Safer Neighbourhoods New Sergeant for Beverley and Coombe Vale

M

y name is Dan Turner and I have recently been appointed as the Sergeant in charge of the Beverley and Coombe Vale Safer Neighbourhood teams. I have been with the Borough of Kingston for over three years and I was previously with the Tudor ward team. I have spent my first few weeks as your Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant for Beverley and Coombe Vale wards getting out and about and meeting as many residents and business figures as possible, as well as gaining an understanding of the specific issues relating to our two wards. I am looking forward too to our first Ward Panel meetings when we report our progress against our agreed priorities and decide whether or not those priorities need adjusting or updating. Just as a reminder the priorities for our wards are as follows: Beverley 1. Burglary 2.Youth Engagement 3.ASB New Malden High Street Coombe Vale 1. Burglary 2. Team Visibility 3.Traffic We have public engagements coming up on 8th May - Drop In Surgery 10.30 -12.00 Methodist Church High Street New Malden 16th May - Street a week - Connaught Road 5 - 6.30pm 17th May - Street a week - Burberry Close 1- 2.00pm and I hope as many people as possible will come along

and share their views and local knowledge with us on any current issues. Keeping your cash safe We are still seeing distraction thefts at some local ATMs, especially in New Malden High Street. Please do look around before you use the machines and check out who is in your immediate vicinity. Don’t under any circumstance let someone see you issuing your PIN number – and don’t let them offer advice if your card fails to come out of the machine. If someone speaks to you at the ATM, make sure you finish what you are doing before you enter into any kind of conversation. It could be innocent – but it may be one of a team who are aiming to make you look towards them whilst another member out of your eyeline removes or steals your card from you. If you are at all concerned take money out from the bank for one of the internal ATMs during normal banking hours. Don’t make yourself vulnerable and a potential victim by being unaware of what is happening around you.

Crime prevention officers If you do have a query about property marking do get in contact with us and we still see what we can do to help. My contact details are below. Above all, remember that we live in one of the safest boroughs in London. We have a low crime rate and we can all play a role in keeping it that way. If you see something suspicious don’t just put that thought to one side, share it with us. Dan Turner, PS4VK, Beverley SNTCoombe Vale SNT, Office :0208 247 5179 Mobex :0208 721 2515 / 0208 721 2750

And whilst spring cleaning … Think the unthinkable and consider what would happen if your home, despite the security measures you have put in place and use, is breached. Have you got sufficient records of valuables – and have you property marked them? Marking your property is a quick and effective way of protecting your property. It will make it less attractive to thieves to steal it in the first place as they know that marked property can be easily identified by the police In addition, the traceable property may be more difficult for them to ‘cash in’ with another criminal or to a willing purchaser of the item. Of course it also greatly enhances the chances of you being re-united with the item which is important too. Although etching or punching your postcode and house number or name on property can be very effective, it is often not a practical option so we have other ways of effective Property Marking. If you have a Mobile Phone stolen or lose it, the police will be checking the Immobilise website if they find it in the possession of a criminal or left in the location of the theft to identify it. It is a free service and takes a few minutes on line to register your phones details. Similarly if you have a bicycle you should register your frame number etc. at immobilise.com. Warning stickers are available from the company. Portable items such as jewellery are attractive to thieves. Have you taken a photograph of your most valuable items so that they can be identified if, as does happen, items are recovered? Photographs are also important evidence for us when we bring an alleged criminal to court. Equally your laptop is top of the thieves’ list. The Association of Chief Police Officers recommends via its ‘Secured by Design’ scheme Property Marking Products and companies which satisfy their criteria. Kits cost in the range of 15 pounds which includes warning labels to would be thieves, an important aspect. View the ‘Secured by Design’ website to see available kit options. UV pen marking still has a role to play in Crime Prevention but only after the above methods have been considered for your most valuable – and vulnerable items. The principle here is that you mark your postcode followed by the house number or name on property with an UV pen which is invisible to the naked eye. Again you display stickers usually supplied with the pen to illustrate that you have done this. Police have access to UV lights which show up postcodes etc when shone on your UV mark of your postcode. Pens cost a pound or so hence their popularity. We are, however, moving towards more contemporary methods where feasible..

Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “Gentlemen. No Swearing Please!” Brian Clough Once upon a time in the West A recent trip up North-West, you can’t hear the shortened vowels in print, led me to hanker after a trip to see the football team I watched with my Dad as a lad. In my head the trip the stadium used to go something like this ..... ..... Once upon a time in a land far, far away, a small boy was taken to distant place. A place of giants and legends, a place that had been denied him until now. His head ached as every stimulus hit the spot, snapped the synapses (or what every it is they are supposed do), and ensured that the scenes could be recalled years later: the drive to the ground with his nose pressed up against the window trying to count the millions of supporters streaming to the ground; the squeeze of his father’s hand as he is carefully steered through rainforest of legs and blue and white scarves (no replica kit in those days); the exotic call of the programme seller; the way the ticket felt in his hand and the way it smelled when he brought it up to his nose the excitement, rising so fast in his chest and throat that he could hardly breath, as the climbed the steps and caught a first glimpse of the pitch. The pitch! How could anything be so green, so smooth? The way the lights lit the scene, each player with a star of shadows as sharp as the creases his mother ironed, but yet didn’t blind him. The players were surely giants, so tall, strong and fast! Surely, nothing could be better? Glory? Glory? It took several years before youth enthusiasm was replaced with the realisation that supporting a small Fourth Division (in old money) team led to more days of disappointment then days of glory. Given that where we lived the trip could have been to Liverpool, Everton, possibly Manchester United or City. Instead, Dad and I went to The Stadium, Sealand Road, Chester. (Try explaining to folks in West London what CFC really stands for!) Phoenix These days Chester are trying to do the equivalent of AFC Wimbledon, rising from the ashes left by a clueless owner, and an Easter holiday in North Wales left me with a rare chance to see how they were doing. I failed to convince the daughters to join me – they have as much enthusiasm for the delights of football in general, and the Blue Square Conference North in particular, as I have in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So, I was delighted that my Premier League supporting nephew said he would come. Here was the chance to share those sights and sounds of real football. Gentlemen While everything seems much smaller these days and

60

despite the low expectations caused by all those years of hurt, the old familiar excitement still grew as we walked closer and closer to the ground. Given my nephew’s age, 10, I opted to go in through the Family Enclosure. The game was great, the hotdogs edible! Sadly, my enjoyment was tempered by the swearing going on around us. I’m not naive enough to realise that football fans cheer politely but I thought that in that part of the ground we’d have been spared the worst. Sadly, football still seems to induce a kind of madness that lets, seeming respectable, people to use language that they wouldn’t use elsewhere, particularly when children are around. Thankfully the nephew looked at me and shrugged as if to say “Adults what are they like?” He had a great time, took lots of photos but when asked about the match said, “There was lots of swearing. Oh and we won.” VVoice
