Welcome to our October edition Dear All,

You know where you stand in October and I like that! The flip flops have been retired until spring and it’s definite socks and shoes/boots weather. September gets confused with bursts of cold leading you to think the summer wardrobe should be hidden away, then lo and behold it’s BBQ weather again. Rarely does that happen in October and now it’s time to prepare for winter…. Our baking hot weather in July did cause one major setback – the Malden Fortnight Dog Show had to be cancelled, leaving lots of disappointed owners. So why not put Sunday 13th October in your diaries and head along to the Riding for the Disabled Centre in Epsom and support a great cause with your beloved 4 legged friend. You can read more about the classes on page 28 The Royal British Legion recently launched their 2013 Poppy campaign and are always looking for helpers locally. The Legion’s Director of Fundraising, Charles Byrne, said: “During this year’s Poppy Appeal, the Legion aims to raise £37 million to help care for our Armed Forces families, but we cannot achieve this goal without the fantastic support from our 350,000 volunteers who help to collect donations. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Poppy Appeal so I urge everyone to stand shoulder to shoulder with all those who serve and their families by giving anything from two hours to two weeks of their time for this truly fantastic cause.” To find out more about how you can help just tunr the page.... And in the lead up to Christmas remember that we’re here to promote your local Christmas Fairs and Shopping Events – if you don’t tell us about them then I can’t tell everyone else! Finally… don’t forget that the clocks go back at the end of this month (26th October). Best wishes Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisher p.s. Please remember to mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th October if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the November edition(s).

Appeal

Poppy Collectors The end of World War 1 saw the return to civilian life large numbers of physically and mentally injured men and women. Poppies, an important reminder of the war, were sold on the continent to raise funds for ex-servicemen and the idea caught on in Britain. A group of disabled ex-servicemen under the guidance of Major George Howson MC started to make artificial poppies, and the first Poppy Appeal took place in 1921. The war ended in 1918 on November 11th, and this has become the date on which we remember the victims of all conflicts, both civilian and military. Thus the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today. All the money raised by the appeal, except for the costs of the appeal itself, goes to help serving and ex-servicemen and women, and their dependants in time of need, through The Royal British Legion’s Benevolent Fund. Indeed the Legion’s Royal Charter commits it irrevocably to this.

New Malden’s Farmer’s Market

The Farmers’ Market is to move from St George’s Square to the Fountain Roundabout from Saturday, 5th October 2013. The Market’s trading hours will remain as before - from 9am to 2pm on the first Saturday of every month. So it’s business as usual for the 20 or so stallholders offering a range of local produce that include: a butcher, fishmonger, bakers, cake-makers, cheese, international food sellers and gift stalls. Tessa Wright, Market Manager for the market explains: “The wind was becoming a major challenge on the Square to both stallholders and the public. Thankfully, the Fountain pub kindly offered to donate a proportion of their car park area for the Market’s use, allowing us to continue trading each month. We are very grateful to Lin and Iain at the Fountain, for all of their help. We would also like to thank CLS Holdings for all the help

"En Guete won special commendation in Time & Leisure Food Awards given to the Market over the time it was in St George’s Square and to CNMB (Community of New Malden Businesses) for the idea of setting up the Market in New Malden.” Due to the move in location the Market has had to set up again under a new name ‘New Malden Farmers’ Market’ and is in the process of registering as a charitable organization, with plans to donate to local charities and community projects each quarter. The Market’s aim is to ‘bring the community back together again’ whilst also helping to support local traders in our area. It has also been announced the Market has been awarded a ‘Commendation’ at the Time & Leisure Foods Awards 2013. Congratulations to the Market and all the individual stallholders!

Calendar Girls

23- 26 October Local amateur drama group, St James’s Players, are not only staging the play ”Calendar Girls” but are using it as an opportunity to raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, raising money like the real Calendar Girls did when they launched their famous WI alternative calendar in 1999. St James’s Players, based in Bodley Road, New Malden, will be presenting four performances of Tim Firth’s “Calendar Girls” from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 October at 7.45pm. Based on the real life story of a group of WI ladies who posed ‘nude’ for a calendar to raise money for the (now named) Leukaemia and

Lymphoma Research Fund in memory of the husband of one of their group, this is a beautifully warm and touching play with much humour. Performing rights for amateur groups are released for a limited period with a view to raising money for this worthy cause, and St James’s Players are proud to be part of this national campaign. To this end tickets will cost £9 with £1 going to the charity. Do put the dates in your calendar as the ladies bravely prepare to (discretely) bare all. Tickets are available via the box office on 020 8408 0638 or the group’s website (with a small additional charge for online booking) at www.stjamesplayers.co.uk. St James’s Players produce three shows a year and have an active membership of about 50. They are also preparing for “Aladdin” to be performed between 1725 January 2014. As with their last pantomime, they have been invited by Kingston’s mayor to put on one performance at the Rose Theatre – they are the only group to have been afforded the honour of performing panto in this, our very own professional theatre.

New Malden History That was the year that was by Robin Gill

My neighbour recently celebrated his 50th birthday. He had a small party which was very enjoyable, and one of the cards he received listed the events that happened in 1963; the year he was born. Being slightly older, I have vague memories of these events, some stronger than others. The first episode of Dr Who was transmitted on Saturday 23rd November, and I was one of its viewers (not behind the sofa!), and having an elder brother I was introduced to the music of the Beatles at an early age, so the family had a copy of their first album “Please Please Me” issued that year. The following year my brothers and I made an acapella recording of “Can’t Buy Me Love” in a self recording booth at Waterloo Station. But, being only five years old, other major events

passed me by that year. I don’t remember De Galle saying “Non” to Britain, the Beeching Report, the Aldermaston March, the Profumo Affair, Kim Philby as “The Third Man”, or The Great Train Robbery. Even the assassination of President Kennedy passed me by. Snow joke As far as Malden was concerned, the year awoke to heavy lying snow, which had started on 29th December 1962 with 48 hours of continuous snowfall. It was the coldest winter since 1740 with temperatures in January more than 5 degrees centigrade below average. The build up occurred just before Christmas 1962, with the area experiencing its worst fog since 1952. Snow remained until early March 1963, with air frosts occurring on 25 nights through January. The River Thames froze at Kingston together with local rivers. In early January, heavy snow hit the Kingston By Pass and the minor roads in Malden were all blocked, but with a lack of labour Malden Council found it difficult to keep on top of the snow clearance. As usual the children of the area loved the weather. A ten foot high sculpture of Lord Nelson was built in Nelson Road as a response to a 7 ft 5 inch snowman in Rodney Road. All football matches were cancelled for weeks, and the price of sprouts rocketed to 1s 3d a pound, with carrots, cabbages, and parsnips rising to 9d a pound. The milkmen of Jobs Dairies had to use sledges to ensure their deliveries got through. In mid January a power cut plunged Malden into darkness including the street and traffic lights. Seeboard withdrew all heating appliances from their showrooms. Building workers found themselves out of a job as their sites were continuously covered by snow, and with such a huge demand on fuel many houses in Malden found themselves without gas. To cap all this, a large water main in Westbury Road froze, and

13

householders had to draw their water from standpipes. Blackouts continued at the end of the month, and a slow thaw occurred after 36 days, but at the beginning of February the snow returned and all the schools in the area were hit by fuel shortages. Frosts and snow continued throughout February but by the beginning of March the thaw had set in for good. The cost of clearing the snow was estimated at £1000 per week, in many places it was 30 inches deep, and the council had moved 40,000 tons by the end of January. Most of it was deposited on the land near the Hogsmill River. Twenty tons of salt was used on the Borough’s roads, with priority given to main roads e.g. Malden Road (High Street). 66 council employees operating 9 lorries were involved in trying to keep the toads open. Other council services such as refuse collection was restricted to 2 in every 3 weeks where the trucks could gain access, and even then they often found the metal bins frozen to the ground. Ring of confidence The next great question to be answered was that of fluoride in the water supply. The benefit of a small amount of fluoride in tap water had been discussed for many years, with most dentists convinced that it would help in the battle of tooth decay especially amongst children. Previously any element added

to drinking water had been purely to improve the quality and/or taste. In the 1950s four towns in England were chosen as experimental areas to test the effects of adding fluoride to the system. Objections ranged from possible side effects, to the freedom of choice which was being denied to the general public over the decision. Malden Council passed agreement in principle in April 1963 after only one letter of objection which complained of an “infringement of our nationwide belief in freedom”. March was a sad time in Malden with the death of the Borough Librarian Hilda Jennings. Hilda had been in charge of the books since before Malden became a borough, starting work in 1931 when the library was locate in a converted stable in Park Road. A resident of Grayham Road she was an expert on many subjects including local history. In 1946, she was responsible for the formation of the Malden Library Circle (which now meets at Christ Church Oct-March) and was its secretary until her death. What is not widely known is that she was the first woman to be President of the Malden branch of NALGO. Described as quiet and unassuming, she lived for the library, regarding it as the centre of culture in the borough.

Does marriage work? But it was not all doom and gloom, love was in the air. Computer operator Lorraine Poad wanted to ensure her marriage to Terrence Dell would be a success, so she fed her, and her intended’s answers to 170 personal questions into the machine. Typical questions were “Should a wife promise to obey her husband?” If you discovered your partner had been unfaithful, would you seek a divorce, forgive but harbour a grudge, or forgive and forget?” The couples answers would be compared with ideal relationships’ responses as laid out by marriage guidance experts to see if they were suited. Lorraine declared they would marry whatever the outcome but it would be an interesting experiment. We will probably never know the result but I can say that the marriage took place in Northumberland the following year, and a discreet inquiry into telephone listings came across a Terence J Dell living in the Woking area together with a Lorraine Dell. If this is our happy couple, they will celebrate their golden wedding next year. China and Christmas In October 1958 a man from New Malden called Harold George King was arrested in Shanghai. He was a Jehovah’s Witness, and his crime was handing out literature on behalf of his religion. The organisation was regarded as reactionary led by “American imperialists”. The Chinese also arrested another Briton together with three from China accused of going from house to house distributing revolutionary books. The movement was immediately banned and all information confiscated. After two years of interrogation Mr King was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “espionage and counterrevolutionary activity”. Mr King had worked for the organisation for about twenty years, firstly in the London office, before travelling to New York and then China in 1949. He pleaded guilty to the charge and in light of this, and the fact he was sorry he was given a short sentence. He was released in May 1963 and taken to Hong Kong (then in British hands). He said that his time in prison had passed “in a flash”. His cell was 9x4½ feet and he had received parcels from the Red Cross together with books and dictionaries. He was not allowed to keep his bible and his bicycle was sold, although he was given the proceeds. He received three meals a day, and was allowed to study Chinese. His feeling was that the sentence was light, but he was looking forward to returning home. After the harsh realities of a Chinese prison, a more typically British event happened at Christmas 1963, when the vicar of Christ Church Rev Llewellyn Roberts assisted by the choir, conducted a carol service for horse lovers at Coombe Hill Riding Stables. There was

a crib in a manger filled with straw, and a tree hung with treats for the ponies. After the service, the horses received their titbits of sugar, apples, and carrots, and the scene looked like a Christmas card as the manger and crib in a darkened corner of the stables was lit up, and surrounded by the animals. illustrations 1) Thames frozen in 1963 2) Coombe Hill stables

Look Out The Investment Bankers Are Back! by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Good news - companies have been sitting on a lot of cash: bad news - they haven’t been spending it. Good news, there appears to be some movement in the number of mergers and acquisitions and possible stock market floats: bad news, watch the prices you are going to be asked to pay. But at least it is a change and the ‘log jam’ seems to be breaking. However, as the corporate atmosphere seems to be changing, we are seeing a flurry of deals now being promulgated and pushed through, with certain investment banking teams having to recruit again (including some of the old team they had previously got rid of!) as the proposed deals start piling up. Is this then a sign of confidence? Well the answer must be partly yes, but possibly it is also a reaction to the thought that the era of cheap QE money will be coming to an end and that rising rates mean that deals must be locked in now to avoid extra costs. Already we have seen government debt yields rise and although central bankers will be loathe to take any precipitate action on interest rates which could scare the markets (as in 1936), the cost of money is starting to rise and an interest rate rise will be inevitable at some stage. So from Verizon and Vodafone, to Nokia and Microsoft, and Publicis and Omnicom, the list of deals is growing longer. A key measure will be the amount of activity generated by the private equity operators as they use this market to sell on their older investments and take advantage of the cheaper money to invest in others. They quite often have to rely on the ability to move deals through the cycle (normally three years) to make their profit, but for the past five have suffered from trading blockage. Whatever your view on the private equity providers, whether they are the dark knights or whiter ones, and there are both, the economy can benefit from better quality PE investment and it will suffer if it doesn’t

18

function properly. To this we can also add the flurry of floats that are likely to be coming our way. With Lloyds floating off its TSB brand next year, to the Government trying to sell off the family silver teaspoons, we should be prepared for a rise in the number of offerings coming our way. Now don’t get me wrong, this is a good sign of confidence, but equally investors should be suitably sceptical of those charmingly attractive investment offerings being purveyed. Unlike many of the privatisations and demutualisations, which were ‘priced to go’ to make sure they were a success, many IPOs are priced to maximise the return for the sellers and their various ‘agents’. So as investors, we need to look through the hype to the underlying proposition to make sure it stands up. Another key issue for me is where your investment money is going? Is it to help build a greater and more profitable business? In which case fine. Or are you in fact just paying out the last owners to go and buy their yacht? In which case no!

New £134,000 refurbishment for the gym in the heart of the community At the end of September the doors of the Malden Centre’s kinetika gym reopened, following a week of intensive upgrade and modernisation, bringing some of the UK’s most state-of-the-art equipment to one of the busiest gyms in the area.

Thanks to a significant investment of around £134,000, many of the gym’s most popular pieces of exercise equipment – such as rowing machines and cross trainers – have been replaced with new, improved versions offering a range of updated features and functions. A brand new Studio dedicated to Studio Cycling has been created for the popular (if not tough!) classes. With over 1900 members – ranging from 11 to 93 years of age! – the Malden Centre gym has been a central part of the town recreational facilities for almost 26 years. The team, currently lead by fitness manager, Matt Schaaf, pride itself on the friendly, family atmosphere and believe that the ‘new look’ will help to increase its appeal even further. Matt says; “Whatever your age, whatever your ability, there is little doubt exercise and staying fit it great for your overall well-being –both physical and emotional. But, that ‘feel good’ factor can be even better if you’re working out in great surroundings, with access to some of the industry’s finest equipment. He adds; “My team is fully committed to ‘helping our valued members achieve their goals and we really hope that the effort and planning that has gone into this current upgrade will demonstrate to our clients that we are with them every step of the way on their fitness ‘journey’”. The health and fitness market is becoming increasingly competitive so it is vital that local gyms can maintain the highest standards possible. With over 10 qualified members of the fitness team, another unique ‘offering’ of the Malden Centre’s kinetika gym is that free, expert help and advice is always at hand. Music

Kingston Choral Society Kingston Choral Society is one of Surrey’s leading choirs, focusing on highquality classical concerts. We have been thriving for over 60 years. We started in 1949 when the Mayor of Surbiton gathered local church choirs to sing Messiah in March 1950. Since then we have gone from strength to strength: we are now over 120-strong with an age range from 20 to over 80. We rehearse at Hollyfield School on Thursdays at 8.00p.m. We give four concerts a year, mostly in Kingston and Surbiton, but also in Cadogan Hall, Chelsea, performing with professional orchestras and soloists. Our concerts cover a wide range of music from the 18th century through to the present day, including new works by contemporary composers. We had a memorable concert in June this year, performing English Madrigals,

RELIABLE

Folksongs, Partsongs and a new commission And since to look at things in bloom by rising composer Graham Ross, our choir’s previous conductor. On November 16th we will be performing Haydn’s Creation at Cadogan Hall. Many of our members live in the New Malden area. New Malden is well represented on the choir committee as well as in the chorus. Lucy Thomas from New Malden has been a member of the choir for twenty years, ten of these on the committee as treasurer and in her current position of vice-chair. Our librarian, membership secretary, publicity officer and writer of the programme notes also live here! Another New Malden ex committee member is Denis Down, who has been a member of the choir since 1998 and was our most recent chairman

for five years. Our posters and leaflets publicising our concerts are often visible in New Malden library, local churches, shops and newsagents. We are very lucky to have Andrew Griffiths as our Musical Director. Andrew is a graduate of the Royal Opera’s prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme and has a growing reputation as a talented and versatile young conductor. He has conducted productions at Covent Garden and worked for opera companies throughout the UK and abroad as well as extensive concert work. He is regularly invited to conduct the BBC Singers and is also a founder member of Gramophone Award-winning vocal ensemble Stile Antico. We are equally pleased to have Leanne Singh-Levett as our rehearsal pianist. Leanne is an experienced recitalist, specialising in song and chamber music. She has played in the Purcell Room and the Royal Festival Hall, and performed in the Brighton Fringe Festival. Leanne studied Piano Accompaniment and Singing at the Royal College of Music, where she now works as a pianist for song classes and opera scenes. Seasonal recipe Chilli Chicken Stew Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes Serves 6-8

With Halloween at the end of the month, why not plan a ghostly gathering and serve up this hot and spicy chicken stew? Perfect for filling up hungry trick or treaters. Ingredients: • 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion, peeled and cut into chunks • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) • 6 large skinless chicken fillets, cut into pieces • 2 x 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 2 tsp dried oregano • 1 x 400g can kidney beans in chilli sauce • 1 red, 1 green and 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper •Warm crusty bread, to serve

Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, deep flameproof casserole and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened and golden. Add the chilli pepper (if using) and chicken pieces and cook over a medium heat, stirring all the time, until the chicken pieces are lightly browned all over, adding a little extra oil if needed.

Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the kidney beans and diced peppers to the casserole and simmer, uncovered, for a further 20-25 mins until the peppers are tender and some of the liquid has reduced. Serve in mugs or bowls with chunks of warm crusty bread. For a hot non-alcoholic punch to serve with the stew, pour a large carton of apple juice into a saucepan. Core and slice 2 small apples and add to the pan with one thinly sliced lemon and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Heat gently for about 10 minutes, then pour in 1 litre of ginger ale. Heat through for a further minute then serve in heatproof glasses or tumblers.

Climbing Plants by Pippa Greenwood

Climbing plants, especially those with flamboyant flowers or fantastic foliage can transform a garden and offer a whole new planting opportunity, as your garden literally goes upwards and takes a vertical climb. Supporting Cast A few climbers are self-clingers and don’t need a special support system when grown against a fence or wall; Virginia creeper and Hydrangea petiolaris for instance. But most need to have a proper support, and it pays to put this in place before you plant. For lighter weight climbers some trellis, perhaps prettily painted will do the trick, but for heavier climbers such as a vigorous clematis, or wisteria, you will need galvanised straining wires. Easy Access If you use trellis as a support on a wall, it can be attached to wooden battens which are fixed to the wall using rawl plugs. Use a series of hinges to attach one edge of the trellis to the batten, and a few hooks to allow you to raise or lower the trellis for when you need to maintain the wall. Planting Distance Climbers won’t thrive if they don’t receive enough water at the base. The ‘rain shadow’ created by the house roof and the drying effect of the wall’s foundations can make the soil close-by extremely dry so plant a minimum of 45cm (18in) away from the base of the wall and fork in plenty of wellrotted bulky organic matter before planting too. Train it well If the climber is quite small, it may need to be trained in the right direction. A short bamboo cane or several for a multi-stemmed plant, can be angled from the base of the plant to the vertical surface, allowing you to tie in the stems and edge them towards the support. Once the climber has reached the wall, the enlarging network of stems may become congested if left to its own devices, so actively train the stems to grow in the direction you need them to. Extra Care Climbers planted against a wall will need extra TLC if they’re to look their best. Make watering them top-priority, especially for the first 18 months whilst they’re becoming established. Apply a good, bulky organic mulch to a depth of about 8cm (3in) or so all around the rooting area, but take care to avoid the mulch coming in to direct contact with the stems. Arches, Arbours and Pergolas Climbers don’t just look good on house, garden and garage walls and fences, they can also be used to great effect over arches and pergolas or to clothe an arbour. You may need to install some supporting wires here too, so go for galvanised wires and sturdy vine-eyes as fixings. Choosing a scented climber or two will add to the charm of a cosy arbour or archway.

42

Clever Combinations If the surface that you want to plant up is big enough, try to use climbers that flower in different seasons as, chosen carefully, the plants you use will increase the period for which the arch, pergola, arbour, wall or fence, looks its best. Bare Ankles Many climbers do have a habit of becoming a bit bare at the base, especially after they’ve been in place for a few years. Try some seasonal bedding plants around the base, or plant a small and attractive shrub a little further away to hide the bare stems. Sally Harris

Baby New Malden

Hypnotherapist

This is my first New Baby column for a while, as - rather ironically - I’ve been on maternity leave for the last year. My second daughter arrived last October, and I’ve been on a break from any kind of intellectual activity ever since (apart from the odd bit of shouting at the TV during Only Connect.) I seem to be swimming against the tide here. The new craze is apparently for something called a Power Maternity Leave. For the Power Mum, looking after a baby becomes just one of your portfolio of activities - starting a business, learning a new language, making some kind of career plan. I haven’t been doing any of that. But I have been discovering how to keep a three-year-old and a baby happy at the same time as staying sane yourself, which is pretty tricky. One way you can keep your brain healthy and intellectually engaged, even if you can’t manage to be a Power Mum, is through music. I’m really grateful to Music in New Malden for welcoming us to their concerts in the Methodist Church on the High Street. I’ve been taking my older daughter since she was tiny and one of the performers approached me at the end and commented on how nice it was to have her in the audience and how important it is that children should get exposure to classical music. If my three-year-old gets restless during the concerts I take her out and let her play quietly with the toys which are always out in the church foyer, while I try and catch the beautiful strains of Mozart and Haydn through the door. Hopefully I’ll manage to stay inside for at least half of the next one, which is on 13th October at 3pm. I’ve also discovered some concerts in Teddington called Classical Babies which are aimed specifically at babies, small children and their parents. They were started by a couple of musicians who were frustrated at being unable to attend concerts with their children and decided to start their own. The concerts I went to with my daughter were wonderfully relaxed, and the professional singers and instrumentalists were fantastic and communicated very well with the small audience members. The only drawback (apart from having to spend half an hour on the X26 to get to Teddington in the first place) was the £10 ticket price (per adult - there is no charge for the babies and children.) The next concert is on Friday 11th October at 11 am. at the Landmark Centre in Teddington and they are held every month (see website www.classicalbabies.com).

The Better Life No Ifs or Butts by Derek Thompson

There are two things you can say with confidence, where we live. Firstly, that it rains - a lot. Secondly, if you don’t like the weather, just give it half an hour and then there might be something along that’s more to your taste. If, like us, you’re keen on becoming more green, having a water butt is a must. Otherwise, you’re literally tipping a valuable resource down the drain. Our problem has always been the layout of the garden. Well, that and my feebleness at lugging watering cans around. But Anne, who uses the Internet for research rather than Twitter, found a solution. “This water butt,” she declared, pointing at the screen, “will fill other water butts for us - and wherever we want to place them.” I must have made a ‘wow’ face because Anne immediately nodded sagely in my direction. Our Rainwater Hub arrived a few days later in the post. (Anne had, of course, ordered it before showing me, to save time.) After I’d prowled around it a couple of times, we agreed to let our neighbour put it up, so that it was done properly. To be fair, the instructions were easy-peasy, only I’m known to be drilly-silly. The neighbour popped over in the week, looked over the paperwork and scratched his head. “Are you sure it goes up on the wall?” “Of course,” I replied with my rehearsed answer, “it’s a gravity fed system.” Now it was his turn to make a ‘wow’ face and he didn’t disappoint. I left him to it and went off to make some kindling because every man likes to feel useful. Half an hour later, the Rainwater Hub was installed and connected by a hose to water butt number two. The next day it absolutely poured down and, after a little trial and error (the error being that I hadn’t read the butt connection instructions properly - too busy sniggering), I checked the online video and soon everything was in place. The hub and our three water butts were duly named John, Paul, George and Ringo. Collectively: The Buttles. The whole system is, in effect, one giant water butt, only it’s spaced out around the garden. Now for the first time, we can also use rainwater, from the

52

hub’s second tap, for the indoor plants in the conservatory; great news for us, the sweet peppers and the chillies, as we’re on a water meter. The cat was curious about all the garden hoses, but soon went back to stalking the frog that Anne discovered in the damp ground behind the monbretia. Being able to harvest this much rain also means we can wash the car for free, should I ever get round to it. It’s on my list, along with growing kale beside the perpetual chard and trying a small lemon tree in the conservatory. Our handyman neighbour has already been back to see the hub in action, and to see the storage capacity of the system. He dropped hints about us renaming John in his honour. However, as he’s not named George (as in Martin), Pete (as in Best), or Stuart (as in Sutcliffe), that’s pretty unlikely. Mind you, there’s always the possibility of adding another Buttle to the band! Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. then the tree may need space to develop a breadth rather than height. Armed with your knowledge of soil and light conditions you can now proceed to the garden centre to consider the tree characteristics.

Tree Characteristics

Trees come in all shapes and sizes as well as deciduous and evergreen forms, so quite often the choices can feel a little daunting. Take your time in selecting your tree, here are some guiding questions to have in mind as you deliberate:1. Do you want the tree as a screen or a specimen feature? Evergreens produce an all year round screen but a mixed tree screen provides interest through the seasons, specimen trees can be a real feature in your garden drawing eyes to particular locations. 2. What shape of tree would you like? The broad range of tree shapes extend from columnar to rounded, conical and weeping forms. It is always a good idea to look at a prospective tree and think ahead to the size it will achieve at maturity. For example, a columnar tree often suits small garden spaces as a focus point whereas weeping trees often have a wider very ornamental attractive form. 3. Does the tree integrate into the rest of the garden? Some trees integrate better with particular garden

layouts which can vary from for example a Japanese style to heathers/low level borders or shrubs and fruit tree styles; even a garden laid to mainly lawn should favour particular trees. 4. Do you have specific tree features you favour? These factors include preferences for foliage colours in autumn, spring blossom colours, yielding fruits in late summer or interesting bark colours and textures. These tips should help you in deciding how to select the ideal tree for your garden, we always advise customers to take plenty of time in this decision making process, planting a tree is a long term commitment. An Internship at One-Eyed Dog Films I’m a born and bred New Malden girl studying for a Media Arts degree at St Mary’s University Twickenham after 7 years at Coombe Girls’ School. Along with a degree, I will need an exceptional CV to guarantee myself a decent job. To do this it’s essential to build it up with credentials and internship opportunities in order to be a successful applicant. An internship is a form of work experience where you under go supervised practical training whilst being unpaid. However, whilst being a student finding a prospect that doesn’t cripple your already poor bank account is near impossible. Therefore I consider myself to have been extremely lucky this summer. I used Google Maps to find local film production companies in my area to help cut down on expenditure. And low and behold I found One Eyed Dog Films based in New Malden! One Eyed Dog Films offer flexible hours and give valuable experience in film and TV production, with a preference of horror. They focus mainly on independent productions and always give new and up coming talent a chance. From the start I was given plenty of jobs to keep myself busy. I was constantly reading scripts, new ones, potential ones and those that had already been accepted. From this I leant not to be afraid to give my opinion as I was asked to suggest feedback for the scripts as well as being included in discussions with the team. The company phone became my best friend during my time in the office. I was either using it to make calls to production companies, suppliers and agents or the phone was ringing for me with enquiries and responses to emails I had sent via my very own appointed company email. Another major job was securing an actor for a teaser in production for an upcoming film being produced

56

by One Eyed Dog Films. This meant I had to help out on several casting opportunities by firstly contacting agents to find the perfect candidate and then to oversee the auditions and give feedback on each one. Now that I am heading back to University I can no longer work at the internship, however, they told me I was welcome to come back whenever or even work from home. I’ve also been asked to return for the production of the teaser, which will be another amazing experience where I get to see different side to film production. The internship has most definitely been worthwhile and a great place for networking. I feel privileged to be given the chance, as I know how hard it is to find companies willing to take you on. Most of my friends still haven’t found an internship. The One Eyed Dog team was lovely and I can’t wait to go back. I definitely recommend working there. If you want to get involved in film and production send your CV to One Eyed Dog Films by email, as they’re open to offering experience to others. by Emily Brennan

Dad’s Diary Ready in 5 minutes by Ian Duncan

Better late?

What’s more, we poor chaps are left waiting, while you ladies finish getting ready, for an average of seventeen and a half minutes each time. That adds up to a day and a half a year - almost three months of our lives. Do I have to triple this with three females in the house?

The only way I’d be caught without makeup is if my radio fell in the bathtub while I was taking a bath and electrocuted me and I was in between makeup at home. I hope my husband would slap a little lipstick on me before he took me to the morgue. Dolly Parton It’s the Wife’s birthday and we’re off to a restaurant to celebrate (one where they do not do the whole dimming of lights, candle in tiramisu, waiters singing, offspring delighting in your embarrassment thing). Daughters disappear upstairs to change out. Daughters re-appear in party dresses (At least someone gets excited about your birthday and wants to dress up). Daughters decide jackets don’t go with dresses. Daughters disappear upstairs to change. Repeat. Initially this is quite amusing. After about ten minutes, my grin has faded and I’m looking to the only other male in the house, the dog, for moral support. After twenty minutes the dog and I are curled up on the couch recovering from the realisation that this is our lot for the next, goodness knows, how many years.

A Total Necessity

Now, every man thinks that the woman in their life takes forever to get ready. However, chaps, this simply is not true. Women do not take an eternity to get dressed up for a night on the town. They only take three years. According to a survey by Harley Street beauty clinic Specialist Make-up Services, the average length of time needed for posing in front of the mirror, changing outfits several times and putting on the slap is an hour and sixteen minutes for every big night out - the equivalent to three years over a lifetime. Apparently this includes: - twenty two minutes showering and shaving their legs - seven minutes moisturising - twenty three minutes styling/drying their hair, - fourteen minutes on make-up - ten minutes getting dressed. (Strangely, the survey fails to add the ten minutes we spend think up a, non-life threatening ,answer to the question “Does my bum look big in this?”)
