illage Voice It is remarkable to think that Britain “went decimal” forty years ago. “D Day” was set for Monday 15th February 1971, and although some people thought it would be an ideal opportunity for unscrupulous traders to up their prices, the changeover from £sd went comparatively smoothly.

This won’t affect the pound in your pocket It was on 1st March 1966 that the British public were first aware that changes were on the way. Jim Callaghan, the Chancellor at the time, announced in Parliament that Britain would adopt a decimal system in 1971. The news was greeted with loud cheers from his supporters, and was regarded as “historic and momentous “at the time. In 1966 Malden residents had other things on their minds. Malden Road (High Street) was becoming increasingly busy, and a campaign for a pedestrian
crossing was started, although there was a lack of agreement about where it should be sited. Norton and Martin Houses, near to the Fountain were suffering from damp, with water flowing from cracks in the walls. Local residents also wanted an Adult Education Centre in the former Council offices (now Waitrose).There were a total of 7000 mature students in the Royal Borough, with over 2000 from Malden, and the existing accommodation in Fitzgeorge School, and elsewhere was inadequate. The residents got their way, and the offices served as an education centre until the building of the Malden Centre in Blagdon Road. Meanwhile nationally, a Decimal Currency Board was set up to see through the complex changeover, and organise everything over the five years until Decimal “D” Day. The penny drops In April 1968 a five penny and a ten penny coin were introduced. These were the same size and weight of the existing shilling and two shilling coins which were their financial equivalent, so could be used as the same both in normal trading, and in slot machines. 1969 saw the withdrawal of the halfpenny (ha’penny) and half crown (2/6). The new fifty pence piece was introduced in October that year as the equivalent of the 10/- note which was withdrawn in November 1970. The elderly in Malden initially found the new ten-bob pieces confusing, especially when paying for items at night. In June 1970 the first set of decimal stamps were introduced, namely 10, 20, and 50 pence, with the smaller values (1/2 pence, 1, and 2 pence) introduced on decimal day. I am told, you can still use any mint decimal stamps on your post today, even those ending in ½ pence (withdrawn in June 1985) which the Post Office round down. With first class post at 46 pence today, I doubt whether you would have room for the name and address, if you covered the envelope with penny stamps. In the days leading up to the change over the two television channels broadcasted information programmes about decimalisation. The BBC showed “Decimal Five” every weekday before the six o’clock u

news, and ITV put out “Granny gets the point” where the eldest member of the family (after refusing to come out of her bedroom in protest against the change) is taught how easy the new system was, by the youngest member of the family. Home affairs A film about decimal currency entitled “Quick Change” was shown at Malden Library Circle, but did not attract much of an audience. To be fair, residents had other things on their mind; four residences in Malden Road between the by-pass and Bodley Road were to be demolished (including the vicarage of St James Church. This was to allow the building of the underpass, and involved some houses in Somerset Close losing part of their back gardens, and some houses in Malden Way losing part of their front gardens. The whole process also included the reduction in the size of the roundabout. Meanwhile the area around Thorne Road

was promised a major facelift. Many of the 115 council houses suffered from dampness, broken windows, with exposed electric wiring. Grants of up to £1000 were to be given to enable repairs, and the provision of inside toilets, together with baths and sinks which would now hold both hot and cold water.
A group potentially without a home was the Malden Youth Theatre, who the council wanted to move from their premises in Barton Green where they would be replaced by the scouts. The theatre group had been at Barton Green since 1958, and were offered alternative premises on a newly built site in Blagdon Road. The scouts had lost their headquarters in Blagdon when it was pulled down in preparation for the new swimming pool. This decision caused a storm in Malden, and many letters appeared in the Surrey Comet and elsewhere, causing a swift change of mind by the council. All this, coupled with a strike by fuel tanker drivers which caused local schools to close, and bus services to be curtailed, made February 1971 an uncertain time for many people.

D-day dawns Returning to decimalisation, the main banks in Malden closed for four days from 10th February prior to the conversion to enable them to stock up with the new currency, and convert their ledgers. One of the few problems encountered on the day, was through traders who had not had their tills converted to decimal prices. Although there were some shops who were allowed to carry on trading in £sd, they had to give change in the “new money” and had to convert the amount to decimal when items had been rung up. Most of the small change consisted of the new coins introduced on D day namely the ½ penny, one penny, and two pence coins drawn from the bank that morning. Another problem arose with the conversion of the numerous local telephone boxes on 17th February. Because of a strike by postmen at that time the coin boxes could not be empted, and rapidly filled up with the new two and ten pence coins on top of the old money. This meant they could only be used for emergency and reversed charge calls, which made some people think there was a problem with the new coins.

British Rail went decimal on Sunday 14th February with new fares, London Transport however, decided to delay converting to the new coins for a week, to enable their passengers to use up all their old change on their journeys. While prices change, most items were converted accurately. The Surrey Comet for instance instead of being 7d became 3p. 2lbs of sugar was 8½ p instead of 1/8, and a large white sliced loaf was priced at 9½ p from 1/11. Whilst most of the old coinage was rapidly withdrawn from circulation, the penny and threepenny (thrupenny) bit in August 1971, the sixpenny bit (tanner) had retained certain affection with the public and only ceased to be legal tender in June 1980. u

The changeover to decimal currency saw the ending of a few well known phrases like spending a penny (I think the charge for using a public toilet where available is now something like twenty pence!), also “Bob a job” week for the scouts is now defunct. But, somewhere where old pennies are still used is to balance the pendulum of the clock in the tower at the Houses of Parliament.

This month the best road cyclists in the world will compete in the LondonSurrey Cycle Classic, the London 2012 Olympic Road Race test event. The race will start and finish in Central London, with the riders racing through the streets of Kingston Town Centre and Norbiton on the return leg. Councillor Simon James, Executive Member for Sport at Kingston Council, said: “It’s really exciting for the borough to be hosting a world-class sporting event. The LondonSurrey Cycle Classic is also a vital opportunity for Transport for London (TfL), LOCOG and the Council to test the arrangements that are being put in place for the Olympic Road Races next year, and all the enormous economic and cultural benefits they will bring to our borough “Having said that, it is also clear that the race will cause severe disruption to traffic in the area on race day, with the Kingston section of the route closed to traffic between 6am and 3pm.
The 140km London-Surrey Cycle Classic will start at The Mall at 9am. The riders will make their way to Richmond Park (Roehampton Gate) via Putney Bridge. They will leave the park via Richmond Gate, heading through Twickenham and Teddington en-route to Hampton Court. Crossing Hampton Court Bridge they will head out into the rolling countryside, ancient woodland and picturesque villages of Surrey. Following two zigzag circuits around Box Hill, the riders will head back to central London It is on this return leg that the riders will race through Kingston, entering the borough at Kingston Bridge at approximately 11.50am. The race will then head towards Richmond Park (Kingston Gate) via Wood Street, Clarence Street, Fairfield North, London Road, Kingston Hill and Queen’s Road. In Pursuit of Happiness

by Justin Urquhart Stewart Economists come in all shapes and sizes. It seems that the theories of economics can also be applied to explain the most varied of topics: from examining why most drug dealers still live with their mothers; how best to master love and marriage; to predicting how many gold medals the US might win in the next Olympic Games. However, for an academic subject known as ‘the dismal science’, it seems ironic that economists are currently employed in explaining, measuring, and improving happiness. Americans of course are well versed in the theory of this emotional state. They consider it as one their constitutional rights, stated in the United States Declaration of Independence; “……that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Only fairly recently have economists turned their incisive academic minds to a quantitative study of happiness, or “subjective wellbeing” (can’t you just feel the joie de vivre with which they are imbuing the topic) and quality of life. Politicians, even the British ones of (usually) a more reserved nature, are looking to have public policy be more influenced by happiness economists. However, in their haste to announce their pro-happiness stance, politicos have ended up saying, well, not much at all. The UK government’s ‘Action for Happiness’ website states; “Action for Happiness is a movement for positive social change. We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone.” I’m not sure who isn’t in that group - it leaves me wondering whether other, rival movements go around campaigning for societal misery with the help of a small and secretive section of the public. The website also claims that while our incomes have increased for the past fifty years, we are still no happier than we were five decades ago. So then, is it true that ‘money can’t make you happy’? This is a worthy topic for consideration; the problem, unsurprisingly, is that economists disagree

At the Aspen Ideas Festival a fortnight ago, a couple of highly reputable economists, Justin Wolfers and Robert Frank, had exactly this debate. The former tried to take apart the ‘Easterlin Paradox’ which states that within societies, richer people are happier than poorer people but richer societies are not happier than poorer societies. This has given rise to the popular but counter-productive view that for rich countries at least, focusing on growing GDP is akin to treading water. What people really care about is their status relative to others and growth in absolute income for everybody cannot raise everybody’s relative position. To use an example, this suggests that if you make £10,000 a year more than your neighbour, and during your country’s economic hot streak both of your incomes rise. If you still only earn £10,000 more than your neighbour, then neither you nor your neighbour have increased your relative happiness. For his rebuttal of the belief that for a rich country, the obsession with growth in GDP is an error, Wolfers turned to considerable data amassed by Gallup surveys of

happiness conducted in 155 countries. With a high degree of correlation, he showed that higher incomes really do seem to make people happier. But even here there seems to be an argument for relative happiness. An extra 10 units of money will not increase happiness but a 10 percent increase in income will. It is still income relative to what one was making before. However, Wolfers’ most important point was that within countries, richer people are happier than poorer people and globally, rich countries are happier than poor countries. GDP growth does exactly what it says on the tin. Intriguingly though, Wolfers left room for the counter-argument put forward by Robert Frank, professing that while he had data to prove that absolute income mattered, he did not possess enough data to convince everyone that relative income didn’t matter. Frank contended that status mattered too – when people find they can’t keep up with the Joneses, it is natural to be discontent. Moving from a poor nation to a rich one isn’t a ticket to happiness if it means having much less than the people around you - leaving you feeling relatively dirt poor. To illustrate he points to East Germany, Berliners on one side of the city could pick up television signals from the West and see exactly what they were lacking. The truth behind the quest for happiness probably lies somewhere in between Frank and Wolfers’ views. The pursuit of economic growth remains a worthy objective for countries, but perhaps it shouldn’t be the sole measure. How about looking at a combination of both GDP and GNH (Gross National Happiness)? For pure politicians, this might not appeal - one can’t win votes with charts and tables. The man-in-the-street cares about tangible contentment, not ethereal statistics; and the politician cares (in theory) about the man in the street. Pure economists will have to put up with policy speeches punctuated with trite phrases of “maximising subjective wellbeing” – but they have to do that anyway. In my view, it’s probably a good idea to cut down on campaigning solely on abstract ideas of happiness, hope and ‘winning the future’. Just look how well that’s working out for President Obama. We shouldn’t ever abandon these ideals though – after all, they’re a fundamental part of being human. VVoice

Geocaching The GPS
www.geocaching.com, Fancy a fun-filled activity all the Family can enjoy? Then give Geocaching a try. “Why don’t you switch off your TV set and go and do something less boring instead?” was the irritatingly catchy theme-tune from popular children’s television show “Why Don’t You?” Nowadays, “TV” would have to be replaced with Games-console/Laptop/ Mobile phone or the latest must-have electronic gadget we can’t live without. But there is a way to convince the whole family out of the house with an electronic device whilst enjoying a good walk or bike ride in the countryside: Geocaching. This involves tracking down hidden items, or caches, with a GPS device and recording your find.You log-on to the Internet to find the coordinates of the cache, and then use your eyes to locate its exact whereabouts – like a good old-fashioned treasure hunt. Look online and you’ll find videos of cleverly hidden caches – inside sawn-up logs in forests, stuck-up pipes by rivers and even stuffed in plastic bricks as part of the wall of a disused building. They’re usually made up of a logbook sealed in a plastic box or ammo-case, along with small trinkets to keep or swap for something of similar value, and are always found outdoors. And if you’re really lucky, you might come across a “trackable” – a numbered coin or dogtag that’s moved from cache to cache. Each time it is moved, its serial number is logged on-line so it can be tracked. Bought online for a couple of pounds, some have been known to travel more than 10,000 miles over 3 continents. Geocaching started in the US after early GPS-enthusiast Dave Ulmer planted a bucket filled with videos, books, software and a slingshot, together with a logbook and pencil, in woods near his house. After posting the coordinates online on May 3rd 2000, his package was found twice within two days after word spread rapidly among the online community. The official Geocaching website launched in September 2000 with the coordinates for 75 caches across the world listed on it. The craze soon took-off and today there are over 1.3m caches hidden in over 100 countries across the globe, with 5 million registered users. And it’s really simple to start Geocaching – just create a free membership on www.geocaching.com, type in your postcode to find caches near you, invest in a GPS

device or mobile phone with GPS capability and that’s it, you’re ready. Most GPS devices take you within 6-20 feet of the object so be prepared to spend a while looking for the cache when you arrive there - this is the bit that the kids always love the best. And remember to always respect the countryside where the cache is found – don’t leave litter or damage the environment. So for a fantastic family day out that doesn’t cost a fortune, often set in stunning countryside, why don’t you give Geocaching a go? It’s certainly less boring than watching TV. Be careful of Muggles near a cache though – Muggles are nongeocachers who are sometimes near caches, such as people innocently walking their dog. The acts, from reception class’ Magic Max through to year 6 winners Jake and Emily , who sang “Can you feel the love tonight?” were all wonderful, and everyone was hugely impressed by their confidence.
Children from the school were invited to audition and after the children had voted their favourites through to bootcamp, the final 14 acts were chosen and were set to perform in the final. The evening kicked off with a beautiful rendition of “Somewhere over the Rainbow” by the Yr2 Choir, followed by introductions to the panel of judges by host Andy Ross, parent and owner of Suttles.

refreshments and an auction which raised £1700 for the Lunchbowl Network, the local charity which feeds orphans in the Kibera Slum, Nairobi. A raffle was also held for Oxygen / Urban Nites which raised £1000 for the Church Youth , some of which is to be spent on a residential trip. This amount was reached with the amazing support of Barclays Bank, who match funded the event. Surely the most unexpected and astounding item of the evening’s entertainment was “Diversiteach”, 18 of the teaching and office staff who had spent weeks preparing and rehearsing for their dance routine, choreographed by dance teacher Maggie O Connor. Screams of laughter could be heard outside the building as the teachers body popped and breakdanced to “Dirty Bit” by the Black Eyed Peas. Everyone had a wonderful evening and a dvd has been produced for everyone to replay their best bits again and again. To complete this memory, the dvd contains a special feature - the Real Diversity watching the teachers performance, commenting on their moves and sending them a special message! VVoice

www.epsomdowns.co.uk Epsom Racing Staff Welfare (ERSW) (previously known as the Epsom Training and Development Fund (ETDF)) was created in 1999 with a view to being able to offer affordable accommodation particularly to young people embarking upon a career in horseracing in Epsom. Since then the charity has raised sufficient funds to be able to purchase two three bedroom houses enabling us to provide six racing stable employees with a home for as little as £70 per week. ERSW also provide compulsory back protectors for riding to all employees who need them as well as other welfare benefits. ERSW currently has two main fundraising events a year the Epsom Racehorse Trainers’ Open Day in the summer and the black tie Awards Dinner in the winter (see www. ersw.co.uk for more information). This year’s Open Day takes on a new format and is being split over 2 days – Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August.

On Sunday 28th from 9-10am, horses from Epsom training yards will be shown at exercise on the gallops, with interviews with the trainers and vets responsible for the care and training of these equine athletes. From 10am – 1pm a number of the training yards will be open to the public, providing the opportunity to see behind the scenes of a working racing stable and meet the racehorses themselves as well as the staff there. These budding performers are enjoying the summer holidays having just taken enthusiastic part in the school’s “Thank you for the Music” performance, which saw the youngsters singing, dancing and acting their way through a foot-tapping production featuring hits from both Abba and Queen.

“I love performing,” says Adam who lives in Montem Road and who is gifted enough to play a range of instruments, including the guitar, saxophone, drums and trombone. Like Adam when he was younger, fellow “Players” performer Anna Eddolls attends Christchurch New Malden primary school and when we spoke she was busy preparing for the finals of the school’s recent talent competition, which she had got through to with four of her classmates. “We are a dance troupe and we are busying putting the finishing touches to our J-Lo moves,” Indeed tracking down Anna is a job in itself, as when she’s not at Players she’s in New Malden attending dance classes or joining her friends at 1st New Malden brownies. “I would love to be a professional actress, or maybe a dancer or singer when I grow up,” beams Anna. I receive a lot of correspondence from people either wishing to learn to play golf or to improve their golf, and when I am asked where they should begin, my answer is always the same, you need good fundamentals. Just like building a house you need a solid base, good foundations if you like, learning to play golf and improving your present golf swing is much the same, you need a good hold on the golf club.This is the number one error I see on a daily basis, people simply haven’t taken the time to learn how to hold the club correctly. Now to learn the grip requires no physical talent, so there are no excuses for playing golf with a poor grip, and to practice your grip doesn’t mean you have to stand on the driving range hitting lots of golf balls, it can be done at home, or in the back garden, so ask your local golf professional to check your grip, and if incorrect start to make the necessary adjustments. shameless abandon. Mention that you have an allotment and invariably someone will ask what you grow. If you say “a bit of everything: veg, fruit, herbs, flowers”, you can get a look of amazed incredulity. People have very different ideas about what allotment growing means. On our site, there’s a wide range of styles.
There are persuasive reasons for growing a bit of everything together, or companion planting as it’s known. Plants release secretions into the soil that can influence -for good or bad- the growth of those nearby. Take the humble parsley, for example: lettuce and peas don’t like it but tomatoes and onions do. (I keep a photocopy of a companion planting chart in my shed on the plot to consult as necessary).
For some, it’s all about straight lines and vegetables in rows with maybe a strawberry bed and a clump of rhubarb in a shady corner. Other plots are actually more like orchards. Some have been formally laid out mainly to grass punctuated by rosebeds or children’s play areas (“Not an allotment at all!” was the complaint somebody raised). In contrast, there are plots with not a flower to be seen except on the potatoes, and others

Growing flowers with your veg also saves space and attracts pollinators, making the plot more productive. The smell of onions is said to deter some predators; so far this year, I found that the only rows of carrots left untouched by squirrels have been those interplanted with shallots and French marigolds. Another plotholder has an equally successful variation on the mix-‘em-up approach: he grows beautiful carrots in broad, unthinned patches amongst lettuce and flowers. As an experiment, I planted gladioli amongst black kale plants, normally a favourite target for pigeons. They survived unpecked, so perhaps the bright pink flowers put them off! But togetherness has problems as well as advantages. Overcrowding can lead to poor growth caused by lack of air circulation and competition for food and water. Some plants, such as soft fruit, do seem to prefer a bed to themselves. Since most need netting and like rich, acid soil, it is convenient to group gooseberries and currants together. They have cropped prolifically this year, particularly the blackcurrants: for the first time, we even had enough to make into jam and jelly. But there’s one crop that never makes it back to the kitchen- the perpetual fruiting strawberries Mara des Bois. Unlike the standard, sun-loving varieties such as Cambridge Favourite, these grow well in the semi-shade beneath the fruit bushes. One of the most enjoyable aspects of gardening is experimentation: trying out new combinations just to see the effect. After all, anything’s better than bare earth. But even the professionals can overdo it : a competitor at Chelsea just missed a Gold this year because the judges thought her plot was ‘overplanted.’ Give me overplanting anytime. VVoice
