Welcome to

our November edition November is one of

my favourite months. It’s never too socially hectic (fireworks parties aside) and, in my opinion, is the calm before the storm that is December – although I am sure that all of you who are organising the Christmas fairs listed in the What’s On section wouldn’t agree! You know where you stand in November – there’s none of that expectation that most of us have in the spring and summer months for consistently warm weather and the associated big disappointment when it doesn’t happen. With the exception of bonfire night it doesn’t really matter if it rains as there just aren’t so many organised outdoor activities. I speak too soon. On 30th November we have Father Christmas coming to New Malden High Street to turn on the Christmas lights – let our luck with enjoying dry weather (although it was indeed a little windy last year) continue. Please!

Thanks so much to everyone who has advertised and contributed to the magazine this month. I do hope you enjoy it. And remember, if you have a local business and are reading this then so too are your potential customers. So why not give me a call to chat about how advertising could work for you. Or have a look on our website www.nmvv.co.uk Go on, what are you waiting for! Best wishes until next time, Jenny Stuart Editor & publisher

A bloomin’ lovely gesture Why not enter the Village Voice’s latest competition to say, “thanks a bunch” to someone special!

A few weeks ago I had a call from Mari at Seasons Florist on Coombe Lane. Mari loves reading the Village Voice and has offered a beautiful bouquet of flowers for us to give away to one of our community who you think really deserves it. Just email or write to me (details above) telling us who you’d like to nominate and why. Closing date is Saturday 17th November. Please include your contact details and let us know how we can get in touch with the lovely person you nominate, should they be chosen. I am really looking forward to hearing from you!

It’s all happening...

on 30th November in New Malden Y ou’ll see the big banners and posters around New

Malden over the next few weeks promoting our really exciting annual even. On 30th November Father Christmas is booked in to come and switch on our new Christmas lights, You may not be aware but the Christmas lights that decorate New Malden High street are not paid for and maintained by the council, instead they are looked after the Rotary Club of New Malden m. and financed by donations and fund raising.. The businesses and residents of New Malden have raised the amount required for new Christmas lights in the High Street this year. The previous lights which had been in use for over 10 years had become unsafe and their tungsten bulbs were becoming obsolete. The Rotary Club of New Malden launched an appeal in May of this year and thanks to generous support from the New Victoria Hospital and 26 other businesses and from groups such as the Girl Guides and members of the public; sufficient has been raised to purchase the lights. The grand switching on ceremony takes place on Friday 30th November at 5.30 pm when Father Christmas will be drawn down the High Street on his sleigh to light up the High Street. The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames has contributed to the running of the lights, but more funds will be needed for the erection and running of the lights this year. Residents will be able to contribute on the evening. President of the Rotary Club, Jeff Reardon says, “ The community is indebted to The New Victoria Hospital, the Council and all the businesses and individuals who contributed to the much loved Christmas lights. Hopefully the evening of 30th November organised by the Malden Fortnight Committee will be a great community event and the New Malden Christmas Lights will be as good as any in the area.” So come along on Friday 30th November to the High Street. The Malden Fortnight Committee will also be fundraising for next summers’ activities so make sure you buy your glowsticks from them. We have choirs from Christ Church and Burlington Schools and the ever popular Borough Brass musicians will be on the High Street and later in our parade. Father Christmas will be handing out presents to children which yet again are generously donated by Tudor Willams. Coombe Girls and the The Methodist Church Christmas Fairs are both also taking place that day - see page 41 for full details. See you there!

Sheep trail

The Methodist Church are also launching a spcial Sheep Trai on the 30th. A flock of named knitted sheep will distributed in various shops up and down the High Street ready to be found by the children of New Malden (entry forms available from NMMC from 30th November). The children have to match the name of the sheep with the premises they find them in. The flock will return to the fold at the Christingle service at NMMC on Christmas Eve at 5.00pm. A small prize will be given to every completed entry.

NM Farmer’s Market Saturday 1st December You may recall in the last issue of the Village Voice, we mentioned the Community of New

Malden Businesses, who were looking for assistance in starting up a Farmers Market in New Malden. The response they have received has been very good and the initial meetings they have had on taking the project further have been very positive. So much so that they are delighted to let you know that they are going to be running a Christmas Market, as a hopefully, first of many events in New Malden. Lots of people have shown an interest in taking a stall, for both the Christmas Market and even more positively for the Farmers Market. We have already had sufficient confirmations to ensure that the event goes forward. The variety of stalls on offer ranges from sweets to jewellery, gifts to cheeses, bread to cooking sauces. Add to this, stalls serving hot German Sausages and hot Thai dishes we are hoping it’s a date not to miss!! The date for your diary is 1st December

and the venue is St Georges Square. We are hoping that Father Christmas might be able to stay around after turning on the lights the night before. To add to the aroma, flavours and atmosphere, there will be choirs adding a musical backdrop to the day. The market will open at 9.30am and closes at 1.30pm, all that’s left to be added to the mix is you!!! The Community of New Malden Businesses is a group of local business owners and managers, who are looking to create a better place for the local community to congregate, participate and shop. If you run a local business, whether it be a shop/office or from your own home, we would be happy to welcome you. We are also opening our doors to you the local residents who are like minded in improving New Malden and the surrounding areas. With projects like the Farmers Market and many others we have in the pipeline, we want to involve the wider community of New Malden in our plans. So keep your eyes and ears out for future events and dates. VVoice

New Malden History Waste not want not by Robin Gill

We take a lot of things for granted in this modern age, but when things don’t work as they should, it is

inclined to throw us out of our “comfort zone”. When the problem affects the water system it causes all manner of issues, some so personal we don’t like to talk about them. But the Victorians were less reticent. Sewage and the ways of disposing of it were very important in Malden and elsewhere, and with an increasing population the issues involved became more urgent as the years went by, so much so, that in the District Council, a separate committee had to be formed to deal with all manner of sanitary matters. Sewage and its disposal have played an interesting role in the history of our area. In fact, it was partly due to the lack of care in the New Malden area in matters of hygiene and drainage displayed by Kingston, which first led to the inhabitants of New Malden leaving Kingston, and forming their own Local Board in 1866 under the Local Government Act. This enabled them to

control their own water supply, sewerage, drainage, cleansing, and paving of pathways. Getting up the Minister’s nose

The Thames and its tributaries including the Hogsmill and Beverley Brook were heavily polluted in early Victorian times which cumulated in the “The Great Stink” of 1858 when sacking soaked in chemicals had to be hung in the windows of the House of Commons to disguise the stench from the river. This prompted MPs to appoint Joseph Bazalgette (the great grandfather of our Squadron Leader Ian Bazalgette who was awarded the Victoria Cross) to design the system of sewerage which is the basis of that still in use today in central London. Malden had its own “great stink” with an open sewer running down the centre of Coombe Road into ditches and watercourses, before emptying into the Beverley Brook, so polluted that in the summer the cattle refused to drink from it. Early inhabitants of the area had to dig wells to obtain any supply of fresh water, before mains water arrived. As for the waste water, the Kingston Medial Officer Of Health in his written report of 1866 stated that “In New Malden the whole of the drainage is very defective”, flooding use to occur as a matter of course especially during the winter months after heavy rain. A month after New Malden had formed its own district after separation from Kingston, the two were joined together again as part of a deputation that called on Sir Stafford Northcote (President of The Board Of Trade) to discuss the formation of a local board to dispose of all sewage between Staines, and the system developed by Bazalgette. Bazalgette himself put forward a plan for purifying the river in 1872, but a meeting held in Kingston broke up as local representatives wanted more details of the scheme. There was another attempt in 1875 with local representatives trying to join forces with areas as far apart as Chiswick in west London and Windsor and Eton. All these plans fell through, as not surprisingly residents objected to the movement of large amounts of sewage through their area.

Richmond Park their waste on Malden It was not until the Public Health Act of 1875 that all new houses had to have running water and internal drainage. But New Malden had faced a far greater problem with sewage which wasn’t even of their own making! Districts which boarded the River Thames had been forbidden to pump raw sewage into the water, and had to find alternative arrangements. In 1871, the Richmond Vestry (which became Richmond Council) had agreed to purchase Blagdon Farm and its estate (a total of 224 acres) to dispose of their sewage. This was an area equivalent to 150 football pitches in total, covering today, all the roads from Blagdon Road to the Kingston Bypass stretching back to the railway line from West Barnes to Motspur Park. Not surprisingly, a public inquiry was called for, and held at the New Malden Tavern on 30th January. The scheme was opposed by New Malden, Kingston, and Merton, the districts directly affected by the plan. The vendors had agreed to sell, and the land would cost Richmond £30,000 with a further £30,000 for building works. The drainage of the land was questioned, causing Charles Blake to state that he had seen the area so flooded, that you could row a boat from Malden to Merton. A doctor had brought a sample of water from a similar scheme in operation in Croydon, and was asked whether he would drink that water, he replied

yes if you put a little brandy in it! Mangold wurzels and strawberries had been grown on the Croydon sewage farm, and these crops were said to be suitable for the Blagdon estate. But, so little facts and intentions were forthcoming from Richmond, that the inquiry was adjourned for a week, so more details could be established. The inquiry resumed at the Tavern a week later and sat every day for a further week. Over thirty witnesses were called including Joseph Bazalgette, and from Malden, Frederick Merryweather the Chairman of the Local Board, James Bussell the local clerk, and Charles Blake one of the local landowners. There was a petition against the scheme signed by 100 New Malden

ratepayers, and the Local Board were unanimous in their opposition. Another local landowner Mr Garth said that his £40,000 worth of property would halve in value, and he would be looking to the Vestry for compensation should the scheme go ahead. The proposers of the idea felt that the health of the village would not be affected by the proximity of the farm. In fact they were proposing that the frontage of the land could be used for building, and this together with Mr Blake’s land could become housing for 20,000 people. “They would rather look on a sewage farm with lots of green herbage, than on a lot of chimney pots” Mr Merryweather commented that the Beverley Brook had recently been cleaned, widened, and deepened, and the Duke Of Cambridge had forbidden anymore drainage into it. The public had right of way across the farm, and this might prove dangerous with the presence of machinery and cesspits. Mr Horlick of Hoppingwood Farm, stated there had been three floods in the last five years, and the Brook sometimes flooded right up to Kingston Vale. Mr Horlick’s son, who was the tenant of Blagdons, said he had measured the depth of the water to about 18 inches with his legs, when trying to get home at night. After hearing all the evidence the commissioner (Mr John Thornhill Harrison) gave a ruling that he would be reporting back to the Home Secretary against the scheme.

The scheme had not been welcomed in Richmond itself. A large meeting held at the Greyhound Hotel on 3rd February, heard that the idea was liable to cost around £100,000 putting 1/6d on the rates. “Why hurry when eminent scientists were working on ways to purify sewage at a fraction of the present costs?” They were shown examples of the soil at Malden (stiff clay with grass growing on the top) and informed about the problems with drainage. The farm bailiff had stated that it was totally unsuitable for cultivation, was flooded in winter, and cracked in summer. Charles Stirling the vicar of Christ Church New Malden said the scheme would “do the people of Richmond no good, and it would simply ruin Malden”. Another speaker asked why send sewage eight miles to a place that had difficulty getting rid of its own waste. The scheme was rejected, and a committee appointed to liaise with the vestry. Coming up smelling of roses After the Richmond scheme was abandoned, and major improvements, New Malden revelled in the nickname of the “Montpelier Of Surrey” due to its well built houses and streets and good drainage system bought in by the Local Board after years of neglect by Kingston. Drains were regularly disinfected, and houses which still had their own cesspits were modernised

and adapted to the existing system as new drains were laid down. The exposed ditches in Malden Road were covered which made a tremendous improvement to the area. There were a few cases of typhoid and diphtheria, but fortunately Cholera did not visit the village. The wide separation of cisterns containing drinking water from those leading out to the drains helped, and the change over from earth closets to water closets improved the general hygiene. Another great improvement was the “papers” used in the closets could now be flushed away rather than be disposed of separately. After joining the ill fated Lower Thames Valley Main Sewerage Board on its inception in 1877, they found this organisation to be quite ineffectual, and when it was dissolved in 1885, New Malden became the first local board in the district to adopt its own sewerage system, and opened the works in California Road.

Poppy Appeal 2012

27th October to 10th November

A

s you may have read last year’s Poppy Appeal went exceptionally well. This year however, the Poppy Organiser has been unwell, so we will not be able to carry out all the work that we did last year. We have ordered all the wreaths for the people and organisations who ordered them last year, who will need to collect them between times to be notified later. We shall of course still need our usual street collectors who will be contacted nearer the date. We would particulary like to find somebody to collect at New Malden station early in the morning, as this is a prime location with people going up to London to work. Is there anyone or a couple who would like to take on the task of arranging the Poppy Appeal for next year 2013, as the present organisers, will be unable to do so. If you can please help please ring June on 0208 395 4437.

Remembrance Sunday The parade will still take place on Sunday 11th November from the New Malden roundabout at 9.20am to the Memorial and the service will last approx. half an hour. The Mayor has to leave to go to another service in Kingston. If you think you can help in any way please ring June on 02083954437 Mary Gillett Hon Secretary VVoice

New Malden News TGroup he newly formed New Malden & Coombe Heritage , who are applying for lottery funding, are starting

to arrange a project on local past memories. Robin Gill, our local historian, is an important member of this group. Thinking back over this Olympic year it is worth recalling that New Malden had a Gold Medallist in 1964. In that year at the Tokyo Olympics Ann Packer, an assistant PT teacher at Coombe Girls School , won a Gold medal in the 800 metres and a Silver in the 400 metres. She was the first ever female British Gold Medallist on the track ! The Headmistress gave the news at the morning assembly and a telegram was sent off from the staff and the girls to Ann. Later some of them went to ITV studios to see a film of the race. Ann's fiancee Robbie Brightwell, a master at Tiffin Boys, was captain of the athletics team and won a Silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. Ann & Robbie subsequently married a few months' later, retired from athletics as they were amateurs, started a family and currently live in Congleton, Cheshire. I would like to hear from any past pupils at the school with any memories of Ann at that time. Ann is fully behind this project and may at a future date provide an article for Village Voice. In the meantime could those of you who have memories contact me chris.coke@hotmail.co.uk v, telephone 0208942-7388 or write to me at 101A Thetford Road, New Malden, KT3 5DS.

Tby Frank he exhibition of paintings Dobson held at the

Methodist Church on 13th October was a great success. We were grateful for the use of the church premises for the whole day, and after half an hour’s setting up the exhibition was opened at 10am. We had about 150 visitors, and many complimentary remarks were made about the 40 pictures and the ability of the artist. We were so pleased that Frank and many members of his family were able to be there; in fact Frank spent most of the time taking orders for copies of his work. Entry was free but we think we had enough voluntary donations to cover all our costs. It was good to meet so many people with an interest in “the village” and one of our local MPs even made a flying visit. Orders for copies of any of the paintings can still be taken. Thanks to everyone who helped, and all who came along to support the showing.

Twillhose of you who have lived in New Malden for a while probably be familiar with the annual Scout

Christmas Postal Service with its red and black post boxes at various locations around New Malden. The scheme depends on a team of volunteers to empty the boxes, sort the mail and arrange delivery by members of the Scout Group from Beavers in the youngest section, through Cubs and Scouts and even relying on parental help. It is a valuable exercise in community service for the youth members of our Scout Group, it is also a way to raise much needed funds for our activities. This year we’ll have 5 post boxes in and around New Malden from 24th November to 14th December, all you need to do is bring your post to one of the five collection boxes with your donation (minimum 20p per letter) and leave the rest to us. A crack team of volunteers will then sort and deliver your Christmas cards to any KT3 addresses in time for Christmas. All this for only 20p per item, so please support us and save money at the same time!!! The boxes can be found in the following locations Fountain News, Malden Road; Malden Centre, Blagdon Road; New Malden Methodist Church, High Street; Parkers, South Lane and Suttles of Malden, High Street. View from the City

The US raises the roof - well just a little! by Justin Urquhart Stewart

If you want to spot an encouraging sign in the US

economy, then it’s probably worth looking at its most decimated sector for the past few years - property. If ever there was a sector more prone to fashion peaks and depressive falls, it has to be residential property. Of course we have seen a similar phenomenon back in the UK, but certainly not the devastating destruction that blighted much of middle American citizens’ primary asset. It’s not just that theirs are mostly wood and boards and ours are bricks and mortar, but far rather that primarily the US has an oversupply and the UK still has a shortage - oh yes and a few Russians to keep west London suitably buoyant. After the boom of building and dodgy mortgages for all, we saw the fall of the forlorn into regional areas of blight

and depression which reminds me of the quote about banks from Thomas Jefferson “I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.” And that was in 1802. How prescient of him. However, from the disastrous crash there are now more consistent signs of stability and even growth in some key areas. This has seemingly been enough to start to encourage the magic word for any economy to start moving again - confidence. For an example of its importance to the US economy, residential investment accounted for 4% of US GDP over the quarter of a century before 2005, and now merely some 2.5% since 2008. In the early years after 2000 new home sales were running at 900,000, but then dropped back to a mere 300,000. Such a drop has quite a dramatic ripple, or a rather larger wave effect in terms of scale. After all, it’s not just the building, but the fitting out with the kitchens, bathrooms etc., all of which ensure that more money is spent throughout the economy. And this of course highlights one of the key measures of an economy - namely its ability to move money through the system the velocity of money. Something which our Chancellor should pay attention to when considering house building and the stupidity of Stamp Duty. The main property index in the US is the S&P Case Shiller Composite 20 City Home Prices index, and this has seemingly risen by 8% since March, and it would seem that the foundations for a more solid recovery could be in place. After all, the affordability levels seem to be returning as the relationship between household incomes and house prices are back to where they were 30 years ago. No such change in the UK as yet. Add to this the reduced amount of stock being available and an increase in mortgage availability and you have the necessary ingredients coming together for something significantly more positive. Given the importance of the consumer to the US GDP, anything which improves the perception of the property market will only provide a further needed shot of encouragement for Joe Schmo, and anything that helps his US middle-American family can only ripple out to help the world economy.

My Favourite Carol

Churches Together in New Malden For the last 3 years ‘O Holy Night’ was voted the top of the Christmas pops by the listeners to

Classic fm. I wonder which one you would have voted for. I thought I would use some of the other well known carols to get us in the mood for – or thinking about - this festive and special time of the year. Probably the one we all remember from our childhood – maybe even sang in a school nativity play - is ‘Away in a manger – no crib for a bed’; words that remind us that Jesus (God’s son) came to this earth as an ordinary child – born not in a clean maternity ward but amongst the dirt and filth of a borrowed stable. On the hillside outside the village of Bethlehem were shepherds, doubtless huddled around a fire to keep warm as they spent another night looking after the sheep. Suddenly, accompanied by a dazzling light an angel appears telling them that ‘a Saviour who is Christ

the Lord‘ has been born’. In those times shepherds did not count for much – but it was to these men that the message of Christmas (Christ’s birth) first came. We are told that some while later some wise men came to pay homage to this child. Traditionally we sing of the ‘Three Kings of the Orient’ but the number is related to the gifts offered: Gold for a King, Frankincense a sign of deity and myrrh an indicator of his sacrificial death. For me the message of the forthcoming season, and in fact the whole year, is summed up in the words of the last verse of ‘Hark the herald-angels sing’ when the writer says: Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!, Hail the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild, He lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons (and daughters) of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! the herald-angels sing Glory to the new-born King. Are these carols just words with perhaps nice tunes or do they challenge you to think more deeply – beyond the trappings of cards, presents, food and good company. This message comes to you from ALL the churches in New Malden with an invitation to join with us at least one of our services this Christmas (details will appear in the next edition of the Village Voice and on the church websites)

Time to change your mattress? ADVERTISEMENT

Most people sleep on it and pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

By Sandra Haynes

K.A.B. offers help and advice to blind and visually impaired residents in the Borough. In addition to the Eye Buddy Scheme K.A.B. run a number of recreational activities which include Social Clubs across the Borough, Lawn Bowls and Tandem Cycling. The Association supports a weekly Talking Newspaper and they also have a lending Audio Library of over 1500 books of various genres. The Better Life

by Derek Thompson

Chickens, like babies, don’t come with an instruction manual. There’s plenty of advice out

there and probably even a poultry equivalent of Dr Spock (he’s not the one with the ears). But you only really get to know your chooks by observation. It wasn’t long before we found out that Sweet Pea and Pepperami were so ill named that they may as well have been swapped at birth. Pepperami turned out to be the good-natured one, while it was Sweet Pea who was a bit of an animal - even before she went broody. True, there was a rather touching scene where Sweet Pea and the cat shared the picnic table with Anne, but do bear in mind that chicken and cat were on opposite corners, facing outwards, like a warring couple in a beer garden. Much to my surprise, the chickens are very tolerant of other birds. They come in greater numbers now because the feeders are within the cat free zone. Sweet Pea did, however, take exception to one jackdaw and swung it around by the throat. Not quite West Country hospitality, as I understand it. Occasional visits from a wood mouse went unchallenged, but appearances from a rat sent them into uproar. We knew this because they made a noise like a Lambretta starting on a cold morning. My master plan, of sealing every gap in a drystone wall, was at best, entertaining (for Anne and the cat), and at worst, futile. A far better approach was ensuring no food was left out overnight, much as Anne had suggested two days before. The chooks appeared to open a crèche when three young blackbirds (known to us as ‘the step-kids’) spent time with them and even shared their porridge. We reasoned that perhaps the parents had busy day jobs because we seldom saw them until sundown. Sweet Pea rather took to them and after a while one of the step-kids started following her around. It also developed a habit of scratching at the ground beside her. Since the picnic table truce, the chickens are largely indifferent to the cat as she sits, mildly fascinated, on her side of the fence. But the villain of the piece was our neighbour’s dog, who thought that enthusiastic clucking was an invitation to visit. The first we knew about it was an almighty screech, followed by a flash of chocolate brown retriever as he bounced around the garden. I went outside and he was delighted to see me, if a little confused about how to

get back home again. (Never a trebuchet handy when you need one.) The miscreant was returned to its mortified owner, who muttered apologies and assured us that he only wanted to play. Both birds escaped from the compound, which was probably for the best. Pepperami shot inside the front door and set up camp behind the shoes, as if it were a witness protection safe-house. Sweet Pea was nowhere to be seen. We searched high and low - we even searched the dog for trace evidence (trust me, it is a greedy dog). Finally, Anne heard clucking at the far end of the garden. There, on top of a six-foot arbour, sat an indignant chicken. I’m still not entirely sure how she managed it. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. New Baby in New Malden by Lucy Howard

Last month I described my first few tentative steps into the world of activities for mums and babies in New

Malden. There’s one important place I didn’t mention, the Children’s Centre on Burlington Road (attached to Burlington School). The Children’s Centre is a friendly and welcoming place which runs all kinds of activities and facilities for preschool children and their parents. These include Stay and Play sessions for under-fives, English classes for mums, and support groups including the breastfeeding support group (La Leche League) which meets on the first Friday of every month. There are special play sessions every Monday morning (9.15 - 11.15) for babies under 18 months old. Anyone who’s tried taking their baby to a generic “toddler session” in a church hall will appreciate how nice it is for the babies to have their own space, crawling around and dribbling over their mirror toys without the danger of being booted by some boisterous three-year-old. There is a lovely range of toys and books just right for the age group, and the sessions are run by dedicated,

helpful staff who really get to know your child as a person and share your pride in them as they grow more confident. They are also extremely good at catering for your child’s special needs and making sure everyone is included and welcome. I also recommend the Toy Library, which runs as part of the Children’s Centre every Friday morning from 9 to 12.30. For just £10 a year you can be a member of the Library and borrow up to five items for up to four weeks. As well as toys you can borrow baby items like play mats, slings and baby chairs, saving yourself a lot of money on bulky and expensive items which only last you a short amount of time. While we’re on the Burlington Road end of New Malden, I must also mention one of my daughter’s favourite local highlights, a visit to Pets@Home (on the 131 bus route, between New Malden and Raynes Park.) This is like a cross between a huge pet superstore and a miniature zoo. As well as the more predictable animals like guinea pigs and chickens, there are also some bizarre lizards, frogs and the occasional axolotl to marvel at. The Pets@Home staff seem completely happy with people just bringing their children to look at the animals - you don’t have to pretend that you’re there to buy - and the animals all seem well cared for with plenty of space in their enclosures. They don’t sell dogs and cats, but you can often see dogs having a haircut or blow-dry in the canine beauty parlour near the store entrance, which my daughter finds particularly fascinating! VVoice

Kingston Mencap

celebrates 60th anniversary W

ith 60 years of helping people with learning disabilities under its belt, Kingston Mencap has much to be proud of as it celebrates its Diamond Anniversary this year. Affiliated to national charity Royal Mencap, Kingston Mencap is run by a small band of volunteers. It works hard to support people with learning disabilities to achieve the things they want out of life, and to ensure they are valued, listened to and, most importantly, included. With around 200 members, the charity is fun, supportive and busy – and always offers a warm welcome to new people. Not only are there 3 leisure clubs and a Saturday drop-in, there’s also a carers’ group, too. For teenagers aged 12-18, Xpressions is held at Searchlight, Kingston Road, on a Tuesday evening, 7-9pm (contact Dave Cafferty 07749 275 425), while those aged 19-35 can join Future Friends which is a great way to socialise and is held at Canbury Gardens Pavillion, Kingston, on alternate Thursdays (contact Kirsty Fraser 07725 562 434). The adults have their own social club, Seekers, which is

held at Newent House, Surbiton on a Monday evening (contact Zerrin Izli, 07523 969 855). The Saturday drop-in at Searchlight is a fantastic club for members to pop in for a cuppa and a chat, as many clubs tend only to be on weekdays. There are always lots of social activities like family fun days, bowling nights, boat trips and theatre outings – and this year the fabulous Diamond Jubilee Ball in December for members and their guests. None of this would be possible without the help of incredible volunteers and if you think you would like to volunteer and can commit to an hour or two each week, Kingston Mencap would love to hear from you. Email Jenny Pitt at jenny@kingstonmencap.co.uk for more information about how you can get involved. If you would like to make a donation, it would be very gratefully received – go to www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving The charity is active in its support for national and local initiatives to improve services for people with learning disabilities, such as Royal Mencap’s Helping to Fight Hate Crime national campaign. It also contributes to local policy-making, such as the recent Learning Disability Review. Membership of Kingston Mencap (charity number 210583) is just £5 a year and includes a bi-monthly newsletter, club membership, holiday home bookings in Christchurch and exciting social events. As “the local plumber” I’m pleased to be a part of the New Malden Village Voice and Worcester Park Life communities, living and working with the people in the area. The publications bring me a lot of my local work and Jenny manages my Ad in a very helpful, professional manner. I’ve been a regular advertiser in both magazines for a couple of years now and would thoroughly recommend the service to other local, small businesses. Andy Reeve, plumber

How to celebrate your 40th! by Jane Eglin

Idecided t was after a few too many glasses of wine that I to run a half marathon, having never run

in my life, on my 40th birthday. Why? 18 months ago our son Freddie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. After that bomb shell we had to learn quickly about how to look after him and deal with the day to day problems associated with Type 1 Diabetes. As all parents know you will do anything for your children so our journey began. Freddie has been marvellous and coped exceptionally well with the 8 blood tests a day and 5 insulin injections or insulin pump cannula changes. The only long term solution for us is to find a cure and a charity called JDRF is doing just that. I embarked on my half marathon training regime using the ‘Couch to 5K’ programme and was then superbly supported by the Christ Church New Malden running club. What superstars they are! I now bore my family with running tales every time we drive round Richmond Park or take our dog for a walk on Wimbledon Common.

A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS

The race day finally arrived and I was extremely nervous. Everyone I saw on the train, who were also running the race, looked very professional with Lucozade sachets hung around their bodies. What was I doing? I was not a proper runner! However I enjoyed every minute. I do not think that a smile ever left my face especially when hi 5ing the spectators and my special family and friends who cheered me on all the way. I was even heard to say, “I was disappointed when I saw the 1 mile to go marker!” It has definitely been an exhilarating 9 months and I thoroughly recommend the experience. Lastly I would like to thank everyone who has sponsored me. I have been very touched by all the donations and comments that have been written. I am confident that the money will really help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. It’s not too late to sponsor Jane, or to find out more about the JDRF charity email jenny@nmvv.co.uk

Even before we started up Groves Residential I used to enjoy reading the Village Voice magazine on a monthly basis and when we opened in 2010, we felt there was no better way of getting our name out to the community. We have always been very pleased with response to the advertising and also the help and professionalism provided by Jenny. We are always careful to monitor the source of our enquiries and we know it gets results and is read by thousands of local residents every month. Niki McGibbon Groves Residential

Leaves

by Pippa Greenwood Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a spring-tined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the mower will then be full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slower-to-rot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moisture-retaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and reduce the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can

52

be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for some great gift ideas and items for your garden including: signed copies of Pippa’s books, hand-made terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, heated propagators, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls and lots more. Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “He who sings frightens away his ills” Cervantes Sing I have a guilty secret: many moons ago I regularly dressed up in a ankle length robe, a white linen tunic and a frilly ruff. Yes, I was a boy treble in the church choir. I loved singing but as my teenage years approached my attitude to singing with other people changed, it was embarrasing, it certainly wasn’t cool. So I stopped. Except in the shower or perhaps on the odd occasion into a karaoke machine. Most attempts to sing at home were met with the slamming of doors and the turning on of ipods, radios or cd players. And then recently I rediscovered the joy of choral singing and just how wonderful a group of voices singing in harmony sounds. There is nothing like singing for generating that feelgood factor; I come away from our weekly practice with a spring in my step. Sing A Song Singing is fun, joyful and uplifting and a little bit fashionable (Millions watch, BBC’s Last Choir Standing and

Gareth Malone’s several TV choirs not to mention Glee and there are, apparently, now more choirs in this country than there are fish and chips shops - 3,094 registered on www.choirs.org.uk alone) but could it actually be good for you? John Kellogg, Mr Cornflakes, thought so, “Singing promotes health, breathing, circulation and digestion.” Sing Out Loud, Sing Out Strong Research published in the Journal of Music Therapy suggested that group singing helped people to cope better with chronic pain whilst a Swedish study, published in the journal Integrative Physiological and Behavioural Science ( bligatory reading in our house! suggested that siging not only increases oxygen levels in the blood but triggers the release of “happy” hormones such as oxytocin, which is thought to help lower stress levels and blood pressure. The results of another study conducted at the University of Frankfurt in Germany add to the case that choral singing has a positive health impact. Researchers took blood samples from chorus members before and after they sang Mozart’s Requiem. The levels of immunoglobulin A and cortisol were noticeably higher, indicating enhanced immunity. Make it simple to last your whole life long The Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. formed a Senior Singers Chorale as part of a wider study examining how singing under professional direction could affect the health of people 55 and older. Those involved , reported fewer visits tothe doctor as well as

fewer eyesight problems, less incidence of depression, less need for medication, and fewer falls and other injuries. The lead researcher Dr. Cohen said. “The average age of all the subjects was 80. The fact that there was so much improvement in many areas was the surprise factor,” Sing of good things not bad There is also an increasing interest in the benefits of singing. The Sidney De Haan centre, Canterbury Christ Church Universituy undertakes research and provides evidence to support their aim of getting the NHS to provide “singing on prescription”. Professor Grenville Hancox, director of music at the university and co-director of the centre, says, “We are convinced that sining is a powerful tool. Research we’ve just done involving international choirs and over 12,000 people identified several particular benefits of regular group singing, including specific examples of people who say it helped them recover from strokes or heart attacks. Just sing, Sing a Song! So, even if, like me, you can’t read music, you can barely sing in tune and your voice no longer hits those boy treble high notes, why not find a local choir? It’s fun and may keep you fit and healthy, although these benefits may be mitigated if, like us, you do your warmup down in the Royal Oak.
